The annual ballpoint pallanoph in celebration of clinging to this rocky sphere for one more year (despite appearances) was delayed by a few days. Oops! I’m not dead, just growing older.
Art is still hard, but this runs on autopilot sometimes. And sometimes, that’s enough.

My boy, bemused by balloon! I love his expression, and his delicate hold on the balloon string. <3

back on tumblr after actual years and rediscovered @pallanophblargh ‘s lovely blog and critters and had to do some sketches.  I love Qiara, especially her poofy mane, but I can’t seem to grasp the physics of it!
I don’t know why it’s purple or why I can’t finish a sketch for the life of me.
Species and character belong to @pallanophblargh .

So, I’m not really sure how to start this but… @pallanophblargh ! Have some gift art of your amazing Pallanophs! I hope you don’t mind me including my own critters (ginkova) in the pictures!
You’ve been a huge inspiration to me, not only in creature design ( I love pallanophs, aequis, and the gryphons), but also just in general artistic skill.
And in taking care of plants (Your succulents look amazing! Mine have been suffering a bit. My poor Aloe and Tokyo Sun :c)
You may or may not recognize me from a few years ago (I had a very similar blog name, and had gotten in contact with you because of design similarity concerns) but have since gotten a new blog and redesigned my critters (they have a lot more primate influence than they did before).
Anyway, the first picture is with my own Keva talking to Sulra. She strikes me as the kind of…person? Pallanoph? that would enjoy learning new things in a good conversation. So long as that person knows what they are talking about, anyway. The next is just a ginkova sneaking up on a pallanoph that seemed to be expecting them from the trees. The last few doodles are just some comparisons between pallanophs and ginkovas. (general anatomical comparisons like that are something that I find fun to do, especially with fantasy creatures).
Regardless, I hope you liked the pictures, and I hope I did your pallanophs justice! Have a good New Year!

I just realized I never shared this here, probably because it's from before I joined tumblr. This was my entry for a contest that @pallanophblargh had hosted in 2011 over on dA (at least my files are dated that). :D Pages were done in ink and watercolor on I think japanese comic book paper and then edited digitally for the text and some effects. I believe the incredible painting I got (LOOK AT IT) was one of the prizes? but my memories are really hazy since it's been like 13 years now haha. Anyway, that was fun, and I always enjoy a good Pallanoph! ❤️
Reivig, Sorstan, Orstad, the ambassador and guard characters, the story in this and the pallanoph species in general belong to the amazing @pallanophblargh. I just did the drawings.

It's been ages since I've drawn @pallanophblargh 's critters and I wanted take some time to do that because for years they've inspired me so much(and continue to do so!). Still pallanoph paws continue to perplex me but I think this is the best I've handled them so far. The noph in the second pic seems a little out of alignment with how Ive interpreted their behavior. Maybe he's searching for something? Can they even turn their necks that far? I've no idea XD I can never draw their faces right...they just seem to lose some sentience when I draw them. Bleh. Pallanophs belong to @pallanophblargh !

If you want a good idea of what WingEater Avems look like, I highly suggest you check out pallanoph (all lowercase) on Deviantart ^^
Yeah, that’s basically what they look like! Griffons without the lion features!

I’ve basically been dead as far as online presence and art is concerned, mostly due to keeping busy with life stuff. There is currently a recently spayed cat wearing a shirt in my house, I’m playing houseplant musical chairs, that kind of stuff.
But here’s a few crude scribbles of a curly ‘noph lady who I’m finding fun to draw. I should compile another pallanoph sketch dump when I’m less lazy.

Some musings inspired by @pallanophblargh‘s constant struggles with people misidentifying their original species as wolves, I feel you, buddy.
My most consistent “face” around the inturwebs is the titular “Papermonkey”:
Tumblr media
It’s a cartoon monkey of undefined species with a “Disney nose” (since I basically owe my entire existence to Disney comics. No, really, my dad started dating my mom because she had a subscription to Aku Ankka, the Finnish Donald Duck comics. Felt like it deserved an homage). Though originally the design had a bushy tail and pointier, hairy ears, because I liked their expressiveness and I had started my onlining from dog forum RPGs.
Then on my first year at Lahti Institute of Design, I made a comic with said character on a photography course, called the Journey of the Papermonkey.
Tumblr media
I hope the primate parts in the design are somewhat obvious, but it received several comments questioning the monkey part, and then the final straw was this comment:
Tumblr media
The bushy tail and pointy, expressive ears were never drawn again. (That was also the final point that made me decide to change my official internet handle from WolfPearl to Papermonkey/Paperiapina)

Furry artists
Furries are just fans of cartoon animals, but I noticed that a lot of art is called ‘furry’ despite not qualifying of that label. Instead, the art may be of:
realistic animals
monsters
aliens
mythical creatures
characters based on animals but are not animals proper
non-animals being subject to cartoon tropes (inflation, flattening…)
One example is @pallanophblargh, who complained that people reblogged her art with the ‘furry’ tag. In reality, her art is of her world and the fantasy creatures inside. While the fantasy creatures (being based on animals) would appeal to furries, they do not form furry art because they are not cartoon animals, but realistic fantasy. My impression is that she is a world builder and a character designer. (I think this also stemmed from people thinking that her Pallanophs are wolves… which was lost on me, given that Pallanophs look too different from wolves to me. After all, you would not mistake a squid with an octopus, wrong?)
Another example is @furioustheowlboy, who made an thropomorphic version of Gesh, a cryptid character. From what you can see from the comment, Furious commented that anyone would see the picture and call Furious a furry. Once again, though, I thought differently. Maybe that is due to:
Gesh already being a shapeshifter
Gesh having an ‘owl’ form that has such a supernatural apperance
Gesh’s owl forme reminding me of Mothman instead
…but I never got the impression that Furious was a furry, but, rather, a liker of cryptid creatures. Furious draws a lot of animal art (which would appeal to furries), but the styles and themes vary and are do not make all of Furious’ art.
On why this happens, I think this is due to a combination of acceptance of external influences and cross-appeal. Cartoon animals are a staple of film and television (not least due to Disney, Looney Tunes, and Hanna-Barbera), giving someone plenty of material and, therefore, opportunities of appeal. There is also a low barrier of entry here: you do not have to have a costume, badge, commission, or even a FurAffinity account; all you can do is watch some cartoons. There is also a freedom of contribution here; opposed to say, a fandom based on Free!, you are not dependent on an external entity or an external canon, nor do you have to worry about copyright. Instead, you can just upload your drawings or animations, since cartoon animals are a general concept, not a franchise. This environment contributes to members of all edges of life while being an effectively neutral platform where a wide variety of people can participate and contribute. In fact, this environment encourages variety. In turn, this variety invites other subjects that mingle with a medium that benefits from outside influence. (A person who likes Monster Rancher, or again, someone who aspires to run a zoo, would feel right at home here.) Similarly, cartoons are amendable to many styles, inviting a variety of artists, who, in turn, have their own influences.
This pliability, while a strength of the furry community, has the drawback of getting non-furry art lumped together with furry art.
