scrambles around ummm...been thinking abt alex being a single dad to nolan through his indy career ... nods nods um lil nolan at '16 indy 500 watching his dad drink the milk sm thoughts ... n then nolan being w mclaren...and alex is happy bc he can drive w his son but he's also So Incredibly Nervous now too...pato immidiately going Our Son now....nashville when nolan crashes he's so stressed bc its his last race w his son and his son just crashed...ummm and then pato going like i'll take care of our son too when u leave :) scrambles and leaves this in your inbox...many thoughts

The way in which I’m throwing any sense of logic and timeline out the window. This is real to me. Tying this into the universe that exists in my head where Alex is Nolan’s godfather and gets custody of him when his parents pass away. Alex coming back to live in the US because he knows his F1 career is going nowhere, but also because there’s a kid who needs him home now.

Nolan only being ten years old, Alex only being twenty-four, both of them being so unsure around each other. But Alex is trying, he gets Nolan into therapy, gets himself into therapy, admits that he’s not sure he’s the right person to raise Nolan because he can barely care for himself. But Nolan doesn’t want to go anywhere else, he trusts Alex, he feels safe with him. Alex doesn’t baby him, doesn’t talk down to him the way so many other people in his life do after his parents death.

Alex still being on the fence until the 500, when he wins and it’s Nolan he sees in the crowd. The kid smiling so wide and cheering so loud, waving at Alex with so much genuine joy in his eyes. And it’s the first time Alex has seen him happy, really happy, since his parent’s death. It’s the first time he thinks he can maybe take care of him.

Alex getting to watch Nolan grow up, getting to take him karting and see how good he is and then one day Nolan is 19 and climbing into the McLaren right alongside him. Nolan is 19 and a Le Mans winner and when he smiles it’s real. He still has bad days, he’s still grieving his parents, but he’s not ten years old with a haunted look in his eyes anymore. He’s 19 and happy and Alex realizes he did it, he didn’t fail.

I have SO MANY thoughts about Uncle Hinch as well. James hearing that one of Conor's friends doesn't have a place to stay in Indiana, he's fresh off the F1 circuit and struggling to find a place and so obviously, being the patron saint to wayward drivers that he is, he opens his home. He, of course, was not aware there was a kid that came with Alex, but he figures Nolan isn't too young, won't be too much to handle. Alex being hesitant to accept the offer at first, so used to being painfully self-sufficient to a fault, but James' house is big, big enough that he and Nolan can crash in the basement for a bit without being too much of an imposition. He figures they'll stay out of James' way and be out of his hair quick enough, as soon as he can figure out this whole home buying situation. And James has a bird that both he and Nolan are both pretty enamored with, so that's a plus.

Alex having a whole conversation with Pato their last night in Nashville, where he admits he's nervous about leaving Nolan. Pato having to be like, "you'll still be here, Alex. Sure, it will be with a different team, but he'll still have you if he needs you."

And yes!! Nolan debuted in Laguna Seca at the end of June! That's such a cute idea, I sob.

Palex co-parenting Nolan thoughts ig

Alex being hesitant to let Pato fully into his and Nolan's Life. He's had bad experiences in the past with partners being weird about him being a single parent and Nolan. Pato is trying his best to prove that he'll be a good to nolan but he's not experienced with any of this.

Alex being the type of person to not bring someone into Nolan’s life until he talks to Nolan about it. Sitting him down and being like, “what do you think of this person?”

He thinks he’s protecting Nolan, keeping some consistency in his life and not just bringing in this random string of people. But Nolan isn’t a kid (he’s a teenager, thank you very much!) he isn’t going to be confused by Alex dating and breaking up with people if it doesn’t work out. If anything, he’s the one pushing Alex to date Pato, to not just make it one-off hookups, because he wants Alex to be happy too.

Pato being so unsure about Nolan at first, because really there’s not much of an age difference. Until he realizes he doesn’t have to be this “traditional” idea of a parent - he doesn’t have to be a parent at all really. Because Alex isn’t approaching it with a traditional mindset either. They’re a weird little family, but a family nonetheless.

Consider, Nolan with Alex's dogs! Brunner somehow already being adopted earlier and than when Alex originally got him and him immediately being so protective of Nolan.

To expand on Nolan as Palex’s kid AU

Nolan is the son of one of Alex’s friends. He’s Alex’s godson. So when Nolan’s parents pass away Alex gets custody.

Nolan is already in his teens when he comes to live with Alex, so their relationship is more like and older brother/younger brother dynamic.

Nolan doesn’t actual call him dad, he calls him Alex - but he’s saved in Nolan’s phone as ‘dad’ for the bit of it all.

not really palex, but i'm a new fan and sort of wanna know more about pato! what are some of his fun quirks, etc.?

and! if you could put palex in any AU, which one would you choose?

He’s a silly little guy!! Here’s some basic info, lol:

He went to military school growing up actually, but didn’t graduate high school. He dropped out sophomore or junior year I believe, so he could pursue racing full time.

He actually played football for a little bit (very briefly) he stopped because he was so much smaller than the other guys.

He’s a foodie, and actually gives Indycar a list of his favorite restaurants in an area that they can take him and other people to. When Alex went to south by southwest in Texas in 2023, Pato actually had Indycar take everyone to this sushi place (the same one he just took Nolan to actually) for dinner. It was $300+ per person according to Alex. So he’s got expensive taste, but basic chains, like PF Changs, are supposedly on this list too, which makes it even funnier.

If I could put them in any au, it’d be the southern palex au I’m working on. Where Alex stayed in his hometown after graduation, helping manage his dad’s ranch. And Pato left to pursue a career as a musician, but ultimately comes back due to…circumstances.
