Movie Review | Miami Vice: Freefall (Mayberry, 1989)
Miami Vice in its fifth and final season was a very different show from its heyday. Michael Mannâs name continued to be slapped onto the end credits, but the lightning in a bottle quality of the first two seasons, with their mixture of effervescent aesthetics, defiance of conventions and willingness to leave the audience in violent disconcert, had long since dissipated and the show had become increasingly straightforward, formulaic. Probably the easiest way to demarcate the phases of the show would be the colour schemes. The first two seasons favoured pastels, which provided ironic comment on the edgier subject matter. The third and fourth seasons favoured neons, hinting at a more straightforward idea of cool. And the fifth season shifted to an even darker, high contrast colour scheme, with deep blacks in the interiors and at night, contrasting with the sunburnt daylight hues. And musically, the sometimes complex and layered, sometimes giddy music by Jan Hammer had been replaced by a more conventional hard rock sound by Tim Truman.
Thereâs an obviousness to this final aesthetic, that brings to mind the laboured style of modern prestige television, which can lean on drab colour schemes and ponderous camera moves to lazily gesture towards seriousness. (I should note that I pretty much canât stand HBO sheen.) But the overwhelming feeling here is of exhaustion. Episodes increasingly settled matters through shootouts, with a higher gunplay quotient than in previous seasons. The moments of bemusement offered earlier are increasingly scarce. And the personal cost of the job seems to weight increasingly heavily on our heroes Crockett and Tubbs, as their efforts seem to make little difference in the grand scheme of things. (The series is certainly an â80s cop show and carries a certain cavalier attitude about law enforcement as one can expect, but itâs been more willing to interrogate those qualities than I expected going in, and has always had a social conscience.)
So there is a certain dulled quality one can expect with the finale, but I must report that I found it an immensely satisfying finale to the series. Like the other two-parters, the narrative is more expansive than usual, although along with the lower number of needledrops, this is an area where the smaller budget for this season shows. The first half has the boys heading down to a Latin American dictatorship to extract a politically friendly despot (modeled after Manuel Noriega, but played by Ian McShane in brownface makeup that makes him look like Muammar Gaddafi). There are shootouts and battles and an exfiltration from the presidential palace, although it rarely feels like theyâre actually in Latin America. (The combat footage is recycled from âStoneâs Warâ, which is one of two episodes to feature the most bananas stunt casting in the show: G. Gordon Liddy as a CIA scumbag.)
But the second half feels like Vice much closer to its peak, setting off a series of double crosses that evoke a violent sense of whiplash, each twist of the plot punctuated with as much blood and gunfire as â80s network TV would allow. Crockettâs and Tubbsâ exhaustion turns to rage, leading to a thunderous finale that mirrors the iconic capper to the pilot âBrotherâs Keeperâ, with the boys heading down to the pier to settle things once and for all. Crockett even dual wields like he did in the pilot. I do think itâs a mistake to not have reused Phil Collinsâ âIn the Air Tonightâ, although Honeymoon Suiteâs âBad Attitudeâ isnât the worst song in the world.
And on a superficial note, itâs nice that both the boys return to wardrobes somewhat similar to the ones they had originally. Back to the pastels for Crockett. No more awful prints for Tubbs. Some of the other regulars are awkwardly integrated. Gina and Trudy barely figure into the episode, and Castilloâs hair in his final scene looks very⊠unconvincing. (I believe Edward James Olmos as shooting Stand and Deliver around this time, in which he has a combover, so I suspect heâs wearing a wig in the scene.) But at least Switekâs gambling problem, which the season tried so hard to push, finally pays off with something interesting. And thereâs no way I can be objective about this, but having spent half a year obsessed with this show, the final scene between Crockett and Tubbs had me tearing up a bit.

Uh Oh
The YR Season 2 Teaser dropped yesterday? You know what that means ! *Fires up the Chainsaw*
The Palace:
Personally, I think it was very clever of the YR PR team to release the first 4 minutes of Season 2 in replacement of a supposed trailer (eventhough one will likely come) because this does something very different to that of a montage of clipped, edited snippets throughout the entire season - Here, we're given a tonal opening.
Right from the get go, the transition from Wille's soft, intimate dream sequence to reality is indicated through a colour shift, and thus within moments of 0 dialogue an obscure location setting, we understand the gravity that the consequences of Season 1 has had. The golden-hued, saturated colour composition of Wille's dream is ruptured upon opening his eyes, whereby a greyish-blue seeps in through the curtains and he remembers where he has woken up. Simon isn't here. Actually, he never was. Unfortunately, Wille is in the single worst place on Earth. The Palace.
Even just by this subtle indication, the Palace becomes this sterile, de-saturated environment and we realise that the extent of the ending of S1 has, in fact, extended to the building itself. To Wille, the Palace takes upon this sombre reminder of the loss of hope. And despite never being a home, it's even less of a house now, because it's haunted.
The Walk:
This idea of the Palace being haunted is solidified in this small scene because Wille takes on the persona of a ghost.
The interaction between himself and the Cleaner/Housekeeper is weird, especially considering the royal settings, because all usual pleasantries are abandoned. Instead, Wille walks past, and she offers him no more then a quick glance, before continuing with her work. And it's not a look of acknowledgement either, it's more so the look you give when you hear a noise, wondering where it came from.
In turn, the camera follows him through the dimly-lit corridor as he stalks through it, the white shirt making him look almost-hollow. It's hinted at the gothic and I love it, because it makes so much sense. When a character is ruined, deprived and lost, they're not really full anymore, they're drifting through states longing for warmth. That's what Wille is doing right now. All of his desires (as seen in the very first 20 seconds) are confined to dreams, where he can escape the sadness of reality and experience a different plain, but that is his only solace.
Even now, he is both unrecognisable to himself and to staff of the palace. He's so far from who he was that when he got so close to experiencing something that felt like his, it was brutally stripped away and stomped on. Now, all that's left is himself (whoever that is) an his grief (wherever that's getting stored - It's pestering and sweltering). This is really just me wanting to start a ghost choir tbh.
The Blazer and The Portrait:
How has all of this pain, this line of ascension, this sense of missing and longing and wishing been compacted into a blazer? Erik's blazer.
I could cry over this picture - It doesn't fit at all. It's too big on the arms and at the waist. The crown has lost all of its significance, because now the blazer grips the body, but on Wille it's oversized because it was never meant for him. None of this was ever really meant for him. None of the plans made were catered towards him, the narrative followed someone else and he was supposed to be a supporter. A bystander. But now, the room is empty. The stand holds a piece of what waits for him, but it feels all too wrong and uncomfortable because it was Eriks.
His body is distorted in it because he's trying to fit the role of something that was never tailored to him, but he's desperate to feel some sort of closeness to Erik. He's hugging it tighter around himself in the hopes that he'll feel like Erik, assured and confidant, or even better, that he'll feel Erik, his compassion and his warmth. He's just a kid. Isn't that enough? He's just a kid who misses his big brother and who just wants a hug.
Not just this, but Erik's portrait is in the frame and is placed behind Wille, which has so many meanings, such as: 1.) Erik is subverting the theme of pressured surveillance by looking almost fondly, or sadly on his doting brother, like he understands that from his death, Wille now must fill his shoes, and he has to bare witness to the trials and tribulations that Wille is about to face, 2.) Wille is trying to emulate Erik's confidence and grace, of which are all encapsulated in this blazer as the framing lends itself to parallelism - The blazers present on Erik, but it looks neater, refined, right, like it's meant to, but on Wille it just looks strange.
How else can you say 'I miss you so much' when the other person isn't here to hear it? How else can you articulate 'I wish you were here. Or at least, I wish I were more like you, so then maybe in some part you would be here.' other than trying to picture their clothes, their face, their eyes? How else are you supposed to ask 'God, I wish that you would tell me what do to. How did you do it so well? How do I do it as well as you?' other than wearing their blazer and hoping that it'll wrap you up and take you away from all fo this? When you can't sleep, and you can't weep, and you can't put a name to your pain, what else are you meant to do than miss them and hope that it's enough?
The Tin:
I know I said that I could cry at the last picture, but this really is the last reason to push the stake further in. Just look at it, it's so-
Of course, just to plop the cherry on top of the cake, Wille ruffles in the inside pockets and finds this little tin (Is it a match tin?) engraved with 'Once A Brother, Always A Brother'.
This little addition offers the only reciprocal of Wille's love, as well as offering the only validation of his feelings, because it works both ways. As well as being Crown Prince, Erik was the only one that Wille wholeheartedly trusted, and felt like he could tell anything to. That's a special person, and it's a unique relationship when it happens, one that is precious. But Wille is also Erik's brother, and there is likely a part of him that feels responsible for carrying on his legacy, both out of love and out of duty. In this situation, the lines are so blurred it's hard to tell where devotion starts and obligation ends.
Not just this, but the fact that it's a match tin (as far as I'm aware) and in S1 Wille's flame was 'ignited' shows how Erik has always been present throughout Wille's journey.
I would just want Wille to know that Erik loved him so much, and that he would've been so supportive and proud of his little brother. Now I'm going to go burst into flames tears, 'xcuse me.
The Burning and The Mirror:
Now, I'm no pyromaniac, nor have I dabbled in arson, HOWEVER-
Notice how, through the framing, Wille's face somewhat replaces August' in the mirror after Wille has burned it away? His flame has been ignited, and now it's manifesting within himself. The burning itself is significant because it's an act of self-rebellion, and provides a little bit of catharsis.
Through this, Wille is actively erasing August from the narrative and distancing him from his Brother, who isn't here to do it for himself. Perhaps one of the main things that Wille is trying to protect is Eriks legacy, particularly in relation to his previous friendship with August, who Wille already stated at the end of S1 is "no longer a part of his family." It's just that now Wille has reason to act upon his desires.
But also, the way in which the 4th wall is broken is equally as significant - Beforehand, when Wille first breaks the 4th wall in S1, it's in the Apology issue and the camera creeps closer until it receives the warranted reaction from something that is suffocating and intrusive. But now, he breaks the fourth wall through the perspective of the mirror, looking at us through a reflection, as if we're stood behind him (The question this begs is whether that's in solidarity for Reputation Era or that we as an audience represent the lingering presences that he's ready to banish, displaying the conviction he has about August).
Either way, our presence is acknowledged, this time against the framework of consequences as opposed to the previous one in S1 of expectation.
And I understand that revenge is not always the healthiest means of healing.....HOWEVER-
The Eriksson House and The Acceptance:
IT'S THE GROOVY GANG !
This is a slightly different representation of the Eriksson home than we've seen before, as usually it's dark and the mains rooms we've seen are the kitchen, the living room and Simon's room, and initially when I watched this I thought that they had moved (The threat of getting doxxed, the presence of the press etc) It could be a possibility, or it's just that we're seeing a different image of the home.
It appears much lighter and airier, comprised of pastel greens and windows, which offers the impression that maybe the family are in a better place now due to the stark contrast between this home and the Palace.
Also - I'm guessing that the letter Sara gets is for her acceptance for residency at Hillerska, right? But the placement of the acceptance letter is both for narrative sake, like kickstarting Sara's journey regarding staying at Hillerska as well as externalising her wants - Acceptance. Throughout S1, that is all Sara wanted and all that she craved for, and now, this is the first sign of her integrating into the Hillerska environment and hoping that she is accepted beyond admission. I'm really excited to see how her story plays out !
HONOURABLE MENTIONS:
Wille simply just closing the door on Kristina. No shouting. No crying. No clipped words. Just the simple act of rejection.
More indications to August' eating disorder/body dysmorphia (He's an extremely nuanced character, and I still stand by the fact that resenting a character for their actions whilst acknowledging their nuanced portrayal are not mutually exclusive. Thanks critical thinking, luv you babes <3)
The music that played after Wille lit up Augusts face? Already SLAPS. I'm so excited for this years soundtrack !
Well, I'm down with freshers flu atm so this genuinely took all of my brain power and now I am s P e N t. But, please let me know what you think !

a snippet | games | hero x villain
The villain adjusted the ruby-red tie at the bottom of his throat as the car glided through city streets, the soft glow of the street lamps lighting up the interior for a split second before it was gone.
The car stopped and he tilted his head up, looking at the building he was about to enter. The converted palace served as a conference buildingâa rather desolate fall, he thought, as the car door shut softly behind him and it was silently driven away. The groomed gravel pathway crunched under well-polished, leather shoes, lit by low lanterns. He adjusted the silk gloves hiding the prominent, raised scars on his hand, tugging them further down his wrist, before presenting an invitation to a silent butler. The oiled, arched doors swung open, presenting before him a scene of alive-ness. The lights here were harsh on the eyes, reflected in thousands of pieces by diamonds around the throats of women with upswept hair and stern monocles. Sighing, he stepped further into the room, glad when it would be gone in an explosion of well-timed dynamite. A shame the palace had to be considered collateral damage, for this job in particular, but when such a perfect opportunity to disrupt society presented itself, was he really supposed to give it up?
He headed straight for the open bar, ordered a glass of red, and retreated to an empty table, watching every couple around the room stare at each other like they were all in the honeymoon phase. The men were all wearing approximately the same thingâdark three-piece suitsâand while the women donned more colour, it was clear that there was a well-enforced black tie dress code: every dress swept the floor, almost every pair of hands was hidden by matching elbow-length gloves, and every throat bore some kind of jewellery. He spotted diamonds, pearls, emeraldsâhe promised himself he'd pilfer a fair amount before he left early.
The orchestra in the far corner were finished setting up and stared to play. Delighted, many young couples put their glasses down and took up each other's hands, and soon a great portion of the floor was taken up by the whirling of skirts and fast-moving leather shoes and laughter.
With a wince, he realized he was going to look like a sore thumb if he didn't get himself tangled up in the crowd of people. Approaching a young woman in a rose pastel dress, he bowed.
"Might I have the pleasure of this dance?"
With a shy giggle and flushed cheeks, she took his outstretched hand. She had excellent balance, he mused to himself, as he lifted her up and set her down again, and a bright smile.
Too bad she would be cut down in her prime.
The key change in the music indicated a change in partners, and he and his partner switched. He watched as she laughed, tilting her head back, as she found herself with a friend in a dress of midnight blue.
"Seems like our former dance partners know each other," mused the voice in front of him.
The villain glanced at the man in front of him. He'd barely been paying attention to himself, but now he observed: the gold tie that matched the hair, the dark eyes, the slightly amused smile, the high cheekbones.
"Indeed."
"Have we met before?" The villain responded with a cool expression of I've never seen you in my life.
"I don't believe so."
"That's funny, I thought I knew you." The man's voice was too light as the hand that clasped his moved purposefully over the worst of the scars. The villain bit back a hiss as the man took the opportunity to lean closer. "Villain."
The villain raised an eyebrow, but felt his pulse start to burn. The man had edged them closer to the outskirts of the dance floor and now hauled the villain off of it into a nearby hallway with a grip tighter than a pair of handcuffs. Shutting and latching the door behind them, the man spun the villain up against the wall, shoving his hands up against the wall so that they were useless, keeping him pinned between cool stone and his body with his own weight.
"I know you came here to upkeep whatever sham of a civilian identity you have. I know the butler would recognize you and tell me your name if I asked. I know that you are planning something tonight. So tell meâdo you want to do this the hard way or the easy way?"
"Depends on who you are," the villain replied, buying time, watching the way the dark eyes skittered across his face.
There was a flash of white smile.
"Guess."
"The hero," the villain shrugged, forcing his heart back into his ribcage. It was the obvious choice.
"So smart. Should I give you a medal?" Came the teasing reply. The villain hissed as slender fingers ran down his neck. "Someone's flushed."
"A room full of people is not exactly cold."
"Where's all the people now, then, hmm?"
"Did you pull me out here to interrogate me? Or for something else?"
"Hard way, or easy way. I'm still waiting."
"I'm still waiting for you to tell me what each entails."
"The hard way can involve a fun time at headquarters. The easy way..." The hero exhaled. "The easy way can be right here, in this hallway. If you're very helpful I can reward you every time you give me a satisfactory answer." His thumb brushed across the corner of the villain's lip.
Well.
He'd take here over the headquarters any day. Not like their security system wasn't garbage and their facility easier to escape than a door locked from the inside, it was just far from his house and the paperwork was a hassle to go through. There would be other parties, other explosions.
Plus, this way, the castle would stay intact.
"What do you want to know?"
"What do you have planned?"
"There are packets of explosives hidden around this site."
"When are they going to go off?"
"Give me a good reason to answer you, and I might."
"Headquarters."
"I'm not sure you want to leave this hallway either," the villain answered with a smile. It was a bold move, but judging by the sharp breath, a good one. He may as well make the hero work for it.
A press of lips at his jaw. The villain grinned against it.
"Eleven thirty-six."
"How many?"
The villain fell silent with another grin.
Another. To the corner of his lips, this time.
"Twelve."
"Where?" This time, the question was punctuated by kiss to the neck.
"One and two are by the front entrance, on either side."
One hand from the firm grip on his wrists slid down, settling on his waist.
"Three, four, and five are at the front windows under the rosebushes."
Lips caressed the shell of his ear. Bonus points for the nibble at his earlobe. The villain decided to be generous.
"Six, seven, eight, nine, and ten are at the back of the building. One under every other light."
A second kiss to his neck. A little jolt sparked through him at someone else's touch on the pulse point.
"Eleven and twelve are at the top, by the vents."
"Wasn't so hard now, was it?" The hero drew back, just a little.
"You were the one playing my game, hero. I'm not quite sure what you're talking about."
"Debatable," the hero whispered as they pressed their lips to the villain's.
Even with one hand, the hero was very good at making sure the villain did not go anywhere. There was the press of hips against hips, the hero's other hand cupped the back of the villain's head and the villain refused to admit that the slight tug of his hair had him melting. Before, he might have been controlling the interaction, but now he was very, very not.
The hero drew back, eventually, mostly since the villain couldn't, and released him. The villain didn't do anything but rub feeling back into his wrists.
"I'm taking all your bombs out."
"You'd be a fool not to."
"I'll stop you the next time you even think about doing this," the hero murmured into the villain's ear.
"Maybe you should just let me," the villain whispered back. "We can play my game again. I think you liked it."
He threw the hero a wink that even in the dark corridor, he knew the hero caught, and left.

Guzhuang Appreciation Month: badass dialogues
(but in the novel)
legend of ruyi :: ep 5 // ep 78
This drama is so amazing, demonstrated by these two scenes. Here you have Ruyi and Hongli watching the same play at two different stages in their lives. In episode 5, they are still clearly in love and are happy watching the play together, leaning lovingly against each other and moving in unison as one. They are also being watched fondly by Aruo, who has yet to have ideas of betraying Ruyi. Many years later, in episode 78, we have Ruyi and Hongli watching the same play, but they are physically far apart and their emotional distance from each other is also clear on their faces. They are literally being divided by the presence of Ling Yunche standing between them.
I find the parallel between the closeups of Aruo and Ling Yunche the most heartbreaking, because Aruo, despite how happy she looks for them in ep 5, would eventually try to break Ruyi and Hongli apart. And yet for all her efforts, she never succeeds because Hongli never actually believes her. On the other hand, Ling Yunche never tries to get in between Ruyi and Hongli, but just the mere presence of him is enough for Hongli to drive a wedge between himself and Ruyi. The presence of Aruo and Ling Yunche in this scene drives home the stark contrast in how the relationship has deteriorated between Ruyi and Hongli, and how Hongli went from trusting Ruyi despite all evidence against her to believing the worst of her despite no real evidence.Â
What is even more heartbreaking is the play they are watching. Itâs not made very clear in the drama, but the plot of the play has great significance in the novel. The play they are watching is called ćąć€Žé©Źäž / Over the Wall and Atop a Horse. The play is based on the poem äșćșćŒé¶ç¶ Silver Vase at the Bottom of the Well by Bai Juyi.
The poem by Bai Juyi, writes of a broken relationship/friendship where two people once lived happily in harmony, then one person wronged the other, causing the other person to leave and never come back; the relationship is thus severed.Â
When the poem was adapted into the play ćąć€Žé©Źäž / Over the Wall and Atop a Horse, the play tells the story of Pei Shaojun falling in love at first sight with Li Qianjin when she was standing by a wall and he was on a horse riding by her house. The two then eloped, and lived together for seven years, having two children together, before they were discovered by Pei Shaojunâs father. Upon the discovery, Li Qianjin was condemned for getting into a clandestine relationship and Pei Shaojun caved to parental pressure and divorced her. She went back to her hometown. Many years later, after having achieved political success, Pei Shaojun went looking for Li Qianjin again, and just happened to discover that the two of them were actually engaged as children. In the play, they then reunited, got remarried and lived happily ever after.
There is however a plot point in the Ruyi novel, where Qingying does not like the ending of the play, feeling that the happy ending was forced. In the novel, Hongli and Qingying only know each other in passing at first. Then on the day that Hongli chooses his wives, Qingying is made to attend by her aunt. Before the selection ceremony, everyone is invited to watch a play, and Hongli chooses Over the Wall and Atop a Horse. Qingying, because she dislikes the happy ending, asks the theatre troupe to change the ending of the play so that in the end, Li Qianjin does not actually get back together with Pei Shaojun but stays firm in her resolve to end the relationship between them. After the play ends, Qingying leaves before the selection, but Hongli becomes intrigued by her changed ending and chases after her. This conversation below ensues, in which you can see clearly how Qingyingâs belief on the matter stayed constant with her through the years. In fact, she practically predicts her own fate later with her changed ending.
~*~
Qingying stepped lightly ahead, her gown fluttering in the breeze like a white butterfly in flight. Aruoâs face was robbed of all colour and she was crying in despair. âGege, what is wrong with you? Everything was well, why did you change the ending of the play? If Huang Hou Niang Niang hears about it, what will you do?â
Qingying shrugged. âAt most, Aunt will just scold me a little. I just donât like that ending. Today, I finally got to see how it should be played out. Iâm so happy!â
âGege might be happy,â Aruo said miserably, âbut today is the consort selection. If Gege you are not chosen, then what would we do?â
Qingyingâs aunt had already intended her to be the Third Princeâs bride, and now that was not successful, she should be pushed to the Fourth Prince instead? If they needed this one forced marriage to prolong their familyâs glory, would that mean all women of the Ulanara clan were little better than slaves? It would be better this way. Regardless of whether she succeeded at being chosen to be a princeâs consort or not, she got to see things done her way, for once. Â
She only managed a few steps more when suddenly a voice called behind her. âQingying Meimei!â
No one had ever called her that before. Everyone in the palace simply called her âQingying Gegeâ. Curious, she turned her head to find that Hongli was chasing after her.
Thinking that he must wish to reprimand her, Qingying made herself as small as possible.
Hongli only laughed. âI chased after you to comfort you. Xiyue Gege was rude in speech, I feared that you would be offended.â
âOffended? About what?â Qingying asked in a low voice. âFourth Prince, do you mean to mention the fact that I was rejected by the Third Prince?â
Hongli nodded, frowning. âI only fear such talk will destroy your reputation.â
Qingying laughed, all her teeth showing, against all rules of decorum, which seemed to astonish Hongli.
âI donât care!â she declared. âThere are many things that women canât necessarily decide for themselves, such as marriage, or family. But at least, I can decide whether to mind those mocking talks, whether to care about them and let them hurt me.â
Hongli looked sad for a moment, whispering, âYour familyâŠâ But then he trailed off. Then, with a humourless smile, he said, âOver the Wall and Atop a Horse is the play I chose myself, why did you not like the ending and asked them to change it? I pick a plum blossom, lean against the wall. / You ride off among the bending poplars*. Is that not a lovely image?â
âYes, it is very nice, itâs justâŠâ Qingying thought a moment then said, âOver the wall and atop a horse we gaze at each other. / I know you, too, must be heartbroken*. From this beginning, the play is full of conflicts, ups and downs, all very compelling, yet in the end, there is a forced happy ending, everyone is forced to be happy, I really donât like it at all.â
[* excerpts from the poem by Bai Juyi]
Hongli looked displeased, asking, âTo be able to mend a broken mirror, husband and wife reunited and at peace again, is that not good?â
âWhen Li Qianjin was being insulted by Pei Shaojunâs parents, he did not protect her. He watched her leave in humiliation and did not stop her, as if all the love and years they shared did not matter. Such a heartless and weak man who dares not protect his woman, why would Li Qianjin want to get back together with him?â
Her voice was soft, but also full of conviction. Even though it went against Hongliâs beliefs, he wanted to keep her talking.
âTo be reunited and together in harmony is the wishes of all families on earth. If Pei Shaojun is willing to start over, why would Li Qianjin not forgive him?â
âWhy must a woman always forgive a man for his failings? Wouldnât that teach the man that it doesnât matter what hurt he causes? I donât care, if he hurt her, she shouldnât forgive him.â
âWomen must be soft and gentle, and give into her husband. If she sacrifices a little, bears a little hurt feeling, they can be reunited, isnât that happiness?â
âIf she must be hurt, must sacrifice herself for this forced reunion, then it is already not a good marriage,â Qingying said stubbornly. âIn my eyes, Li Qianjin is a woman who is willing to walk away, to severe the relationship, because all trust is gone.â
âIf she walks away, wouldnât that mean she spends the rest of her life alone? Everyone has their own difficult moments, if Li Qianjin is so stubborn, Pei Shaojun is put in a difficult position too.â
âWho isnât in a difficult position?â Qingying asked. âIf the woman can understand the manâs difficulties, can a man not understand a womanâs pain of being cast aside and humiliated?â
Hongli thought for a moment then laughed. âQingying Meimei, you are much too unbending.â
Qingying merely nodded. âItâs better to live the rest of your life alone, rather than live to old age with someone who already betrayed you once. So it might be harmonious today, but if a conflict arises, what is to say Pei Shaojun will not just forsake Li Qianjin again? It is easy to change mountains**, that is the principle here.â
[** there is a Chinese saying that it is easier to change the course of rivers and shapes of mountains than to change the character of a person⊠aka old habits die hard but with more stakes.]
Hongli still did not agree with her logic. âWomen should place obedience before all and be pliable. If she does not restrain herself and be more accepting for the greater good, then she would just suffer.â
âIf one must accept being humiliated for a so-called happy ending, then I donât want that kind of happy ending,â Qingying repeated.
âThen is Over the wall and atop a horse we gaze at each other so easily forgotten?â Hongli asked, astonished.
Qingyin turned and stared at Hongli. âIf it is not easily forgotten, then why didnât Pei Shaojun protect Li Qianjin? Hasnât he too forgotten how they once loved each other when he cast her aside?â
Hongli could not argue against her, and finally admitted defeat. âMeimei, you really are something, I donât know what else to say.â
Qingying laughed in delight.
âMeimei,â Hongli said, stepping closer to her, âyou argued so animatedly, you must love Over the Wall and Atop a Horse. Why donât we go back and hear the play again?â
Qingying hesitated, thinking that it would be a great loss of face if she were to return now. But Hongli was looking at her so earnestly, she found it hard to immediately refuse.
âIâll go back first, and prepare good tea to wait for you.â
He said âwaitâ, as if he would not move the day along if she did not come. Her heart softened, and she suddenly stopped in her path.
âŠ
[And then of course Qingying comes back to attend the selection. Hongli, who had originally intended to choose Langhua, changes his mind and chose Qingying to be his di fujin, but then Yongzheng interfered and put a stop to it⊠But the play is one massive foreshadowing plot device that doesnât get explained much in the drama, but packs a punch when you read this scene.] -h

random grishaverse facts/trivia (mostly tgt/kos, tbh), because i love useless details. Also, attempted organisation, because i like order too. + ft. my unwanted commentary
the darkling
has a sweet tooth
loves animals and nature in general
for those of you who have read demon in the woods, he got to meet the white tigers :)
his bedchamber walls are carved into trees bc he loves the woods
his favourite trees in particular are pine trees (or just evergreen trees in general)
he used to be afraid of the dark (many possibly worrying? interesting? implications to this; i wonât get into it here tho)
he likes bright colours, but wears black all the time basically for the aesthetic
he met his younger half-sister, Ulla, when he was a seerâs apprentice in FjerdaÂ
the darkling is a musician! He plays the fiddle, and growing up, he played the balalaika and oud (i wonder if he can read tablature,,)Â
His father was a very powerful heartrender (maybe this is why the corporalki are valued so highly by him?)
genya
she got an amplifier between the end of R+R and the start of KoS (kestrel bones)
Genya used Dekora Nevich, the Ornamental Blade, to poison the King
It smells like cinnamon and is a warm golden colour
the royal family / nikolaiâs bio familyÂ
the King once cut himself on his own sword
genya named the queenâs dogÂ
until she was like 11, Genya was like the daughter the queen never had (omg i really wonder how Nikolai and Vasily felt about that? ik itâs not really mentioned, and Nik kinda acts like he just met Genya is S+S, but they must have been a lot closer, right?? I mean genya was almost always at the grand palace with Queen Tatiana, and nikolai just really wanted his parentsâ attention, there must have been some kind of maybe one-sided jealousy/sibling rivalry thing, right?? I digress- for now)
also the queen in a dog person
p. sure Nikolai is a mommyâs boy
(possible explanation:) he looks exactly like his real father (except for his eyes). Nikolai even has the same laugh as Magnus
the queen was also fed up with Vasily and his horses
Vasily rides a white gelding horse and Nikolai rides a speckled grey horse (called Punchline)
speaking of, vasily is definitely a horse girl, but like... just the worst (darkling đ€vasily)
Queen Tatianaâs letters to Magnus Opjer were âvery racyâÂ
She doesnât approve of women in trousers
Linnea is ~1 year younger than Nikolai
she is good at math + studies engineering at ketterdam (I wonder if maybe she and Nikolai crossed paths when he was at uni- theyâre around the same age, so maybe?)
The King and Queen hired a clown for nikolaiâs 10th birthday (the worst birthday party heâd been to, inclusive of the night Vasily died, according to Nikolai)
Nikolai is afraid of spiders (and also clowns???)
nikolai:
he can juggle
Nikolai sucks at learning languagesÂ
he once spoke Fjerdan so badly a man named Knut offered him a ruby to stop
his Kerch seems pretty good tho
Nikolai met The Darkling when he was 14
Nikolai is a baritone (as is Jesper!)
In his free time, Nikolai writes bad poetry (remember that time he got stabbed w/ a letter opener bc his poetry sucked?)
he went through an emo phase/ existential crisis before becoming sturmhond.
during said emo phase, he wrote rhyming poetry pretty much exclusively
He also took philosophy classes at uni (PPE?)
alina:
alina tried on the same rose dress that the Queen watched vasily die in
Nikolai gifted Alina a VERY low-cut cobalt lace gown (In the words of Nadia, âThe bodice might as well be cut to the navel.â )
Alina hates herring, but Zoya and Nikolai love it
She is VERY sarcastic and snarky!! I feel like this gets glossed over so much in the fandom, and just why?? (sheâs so gloomy and over everything 90% of the time, i love it so much)
So this isnât technically a fact-fact, but there is no way Alina wasnât at least a little bit into women. Did you read how she talked abt genya? Zoya? thereâs no way she wasnât into them
Alina doesnât really like hard cheese
zoya + zoyalai:
Zoyaâs horse is called Serebrine
Zoya can use her lightning as a defibrillator (Iâm sure other squallers can do this too with the right training)
Zoya likes Nikolaiâs hands (and Nikolai likes Zoyaâs feet lmao)
she has âweird (long?) incisorsâ Â
she definitely had a crush on Nikolai since Ruin and Rising
kaz:
Kaz grew up on a farm in Southern Kerch, in Lij
Kaz is a both a cat and a dog person  (he just likes strays)
Matthias is a dog person, obviously
All the other crows are cat peopleÂ
He likes hot chocolate
both he and nikolai like brandy
hates cereal
Kaz is obsessed with magic + likes puzzles
actually very funny if he wasnât terrifying (honestly?? at leat 70% of his dialogue is just witty quips/jokes)
Kazâs right leg is the one he broke, and the dregs usually get their tattoo on their right forearm
the other crows:
Jesper has been known to go line-dancing (and would like country music)Â
Mal and Jesper were friends in S+S!! (Probably) Jesper has a not-really-secret crush on sturmhond.Â
He also had a VERY not secret crush on Kaz before wylan, ofc
Matthiasâ middle name is Benedik
Nina would win in an arm wrestling contest against Jesper
Inej has a thing for Kazâs eyes
Nina was at the orphanage with the other grisha kids in R+R
In the opening scene of CK, Jesper was wearing a navy waistcoat with little gold stars (his fashion is just top tier honestly)
grisha- powers, etc.:
A solar eclipse would have no effect on the Darklingâs powers, but it would make it harder for Alina to summon.
Fabrikators can make flowers bloom
The twins have shark teeth amplifiers
Adrik and Leoni are saints
general world stuff:
Gay marriage is legal in Kerch!
there was a landbridge connecting Shu Han and Kerch but the council of tides covered it
Antimony is used as mascara
kruge is pale purple paper currency
ravkan currency has Nikolaiâs face on it (ig not anymore tho?)
HringkÀlla is celebrated on March 20th
the distance between Ivets and Os Alta is only about 100 miles? (iâm just going to willfully ignore this, because thats,, so small?)
Mermaids and dragons exist(ed) in the grishaverse
misc:
the daughter of the duke of ivets has a daughter who can play the harp
there is not fourth tale of krigi
The baroness Natasha Beritrova is fifty (as of KoS) and has lands near caryeva
Elke Marie Smit is from one of the most powerful Kerch families and is just 16 in KoS
Oncat is an orange tabby
Anya liked Joost a lot :( (I got way too attached to them at the start of SoC and was so sad + confused when they died lol)
david eats hard boiled eggs for his working days in the shops
âMalyenâ is the Ravkan version of âMalcolmâ (very fitting)
Nikolai brought the kids at Keramzin toy boats + frequently sends Alina and Mal giftsÂ
The triumvirate would also visit them every feast of Sankt Nikolai too :)
star signs / birthdays (ik the gv constellations arenât the same as ours, but idc):
Inej: Cancer (june 21st - july 22nd)
Kaz: Capricorn (december 22nd - january 19th)
Nina: Leo (july 23rd - august 22nd)
Jesper: Gemini (may 21st - june 20th)
Matthias: Taurus (april 20th - may 20th)
Wylan: virgo (august 23rd - september 22nd)
Kuwei: aries (march 21st - april 19th)
Darkling: aries
Nikolai is most likely either a gemini or cancer (but he could also be a Leo or Taurus). Whatever it is, he is a summer baby.
Alina and Mal have the same birthday (they were given the Dukeâs birthday when they came to the orphanage)
heights:
Jesper is 6â2â - 6â3â
Kaz is 6âČ
Matthias is 6â4
Nina is 5â9â-5â10â
Inej is 5â3â - 5â4â
Alina is âshortâ (5â3â?)
Mal and the Darkling are âtallâ (tbf, like all the characters are tall >:( I want my short people rights)
Nikolai  (well, stumhond, but i think theyâre the same height) is described by Jesper as tall (so 6â2â+?? why is everyone so tall??? I-)
Zoya is several inches shorter than nina (zoyalai height difference lets go)
Kuwei is slightly shorter than Wylan (who is about 5â8â?)
thereâs definitely more, so if you made it this far and have any more, pls add to the list!

my sweet romantic teenage nights
juke | high school + diner au | title: scenes from an italian restaurant // billy joel
Magentaâs Palace was an artefact from the glorious American Dream; a fluorescent gem wrapped in that 60s architecture and old-fashioned uniforms. It was also the hang-out spot of most LF Arts students, right in the heart of Los Feliz and on most kidsâ path. Â
Luke used to roll his eyes at the place, thinking it was corny and certainly not the place a punk-rocker like him would go⊠until he tasted their gnarly waffles. And burgers. And milkshakes. His love for good food trumped his desire for street cred and ended up like the rest of his peers: a regular at MP.
Alex and Reggie never had qualms with it. The former was rather happy Luke got over himself and Reggie was simply pleased to spend more time with his friends. It became tradition to eat there every Friday after school. Sometimes they stayed until the early hours of the night talking, sometimes it was to fuel up before a gig.
Settling in their booth (theirs - Luke has made sure to carve the underside of the table with their names), Luke sighed contently. âBoys, this gig is gonna be fire.â
âI still donât know how you convinced the guys at Ravenâs Nest,â Alex mused, glancing around for a waitress in a candycane-coloured uniform.
Reggie nodded gravely. âYeah, theyâre scary.â
âUsed my charm,â he smirked. âDialled it up like I always do.â
The blonde snorted. âSure.â
Lukeâs face crashed. âFine. I used our fakeâs when he didnât believe we were eighteen.â
His friends grinned, Alex snapping his fingers. âThere it is.â
The chipper Nora glided towards them, slaloming between tables with her notebook. Alexâ remark didnât bother him, crossing his arms with a shrug. âDoes it matter? I got us in. Theyâre gonna love us. Nay! Theyâre gonna eat this set up!â
âYou better be right - hi, Nora - cause itâs a bar for bikers. Real ass bikers,â Alex replied, shooting Nora a smile.
âHello, boys,â she greeted, her signature red hair tied in a messy bun. Reg used to have a crush on her when they first visited, until they realised she was twenty-three and in a committed relationship with a guy from USC studying medicine. Yeah, he had no shot. Luke had to console him by buying five chocolate shakes and blasting Elvis Presley in the car.
Despite this, Reggie still had a soft spot for her, smiling kindly at the waitress. âOur usual, please.â
The notebook got tucked in her apron with a bright nod. âComing right up!â
As Nora swiftly returned behind the glossy bartop, parlaying the order to the kitchen, the entrance opened. The bell above chimed, three girls appearing beneath it.
Oh, shit.
When Luke enrolled into LF Arts as a green fourteen year old, he had planned to only focus on music and nothing else. Heâd blaze through his classes and become the best in music and then, with his obsessive nature at a peak, would launch the band into the next stratosphere. That was the plan. Music, music, music. (And food from Magentaâs.)
Fourteen year old Luke wasnât aware girls like Julie Molina existed though. That changed on the first day. She came to the front of the class, blew everyone away with a Taylor Swift cover and shot a toothy smile when she finished - like it was nothing. Like she didnât have the voice of the century. (Like she wouldnât mess with Lukeâs plans of becoming the best, damn it!) Though his initial reaction was envy, he quickly realised it was rather a disgruntled crush than actual dismay.
She was cute. Still cute. After every summer break, he expected her to be less pretty so that his nerves could calm down for once. Nope. Julie Molina was pretty as hell.
He has never seen her here on Fridayâs. Why now? Why now when they were mentally preparing themselves for a gig that could get them their asses kicked if they didnât perform well? Luke needed to focus! Not think about where sheâd sit and what sheâd talk about and what she was going to eat.
His eyes tracked as Julie, Flynn and Kayla were in busy conversation, barely aware of their surroundings. Her head rolled back in a laugh at something Flynn said, eyes shut in glee. Luke flushed red, averting his gaze to the scratched up table. His friends were snickering, Alex muttering a âJesusâŠâ under his breath.
Luke snapped his arm. âStop being a dick.â
âWhy donât you just ask her out?â, Reggie pondered, absentmindedly making origami with the thin napkins.
âI think he needs to talk to her first to do that,â Alex teased before Luke could respond, earning another glare.
It wasnât like he and Julie never spoke. They were seniors, they had multiple classes together and spent many hours cooped in the same music classroom. He was even part of her group project in junior year! Theyâve talked! But it never lead to anything, his lingering stares falling for her oblivious profile, her never once looking back at him.
The connection Luke always craved hasnât been there, though he always felt like they could have that. Musical spirits were alike, right? At least his crush wasnât as hopeless as Reggieâs on Nora.
The girls chose a booth right next to theirs, Julie in his direct line of sight. Alex was buzzing in his seat from stifled laughter, visibly trying to not turn his head and address them. The guitarist felt like dying, not even the steaming plates of burgers set in front of them enough to lift his mood.
Luke leaned forward, voice a hiss. âI can talk to her. I just⊠havenât felt the need to.â
Reggie patted his shoulder sympathetically. âItâs okay, buddy. You donât have to lie to us.â
Frustration began simmering his skin, the scowl deepening. He wasnât lying! Maybe a little! Heâs been waiting for the right time to approach her, say and do the right thing to sweep her off her feet like the fucking rockstar he was. Had he been preparing his lines since he was fourteen? Also maybe. They were being revised.
Alex often told him he shouldnât put Julie on a pedestal. That she was just a girl. It made him wonder if he was the only one that first day of high school that felt it. That awestruck whooping in his chest from seeing her curls dance around her almond eyes and hear how each lyric was laced with a passionate smile. Even at fourteen was he aware of how special that was. Julie wasnât just a girl. She was the coolest girl heâs ever met and he didnât even know her that well. He couldnât imagine actually becoming friends with her, uncovering all facets of her personality and not get overwhelmed by her Julie-ness.
Huh. His crush went deeper than he thought. Yikes.
At the end of the day, Luke could admit that he was simply a teenage boy nervous to talk to a girl. âNervousâ was like a curse word to him though, that admission a secret heâd take with him to the grave.
âEh,â Alex quipped, egging him on. âLukeâs a terrible liar. He doesnât have to tell us for us to know itâs true.â Â Â
His hands slammed down on the table, words spouting from his lips. âGirls! Can we get your napkin dispenser?!â
Fucking fantastic, Luke.
All three perked up in surprise, Flynn twisting in her booth to curl her nose and tilt her head. âWhy?â
âItâs empty,â he bluffed.
Kayla craned her neck and instantly caught Reggieâs handiwork scattered across the table. âNo, itâs not.â
Julie sat next to her, blinking in confusion. âWhy do you need our napkins?â
Her smooth voice directed right at him caused a thrill up his spine, a grin involuntarily tugging on his lips. âCause Reggie needs them for his crafts.â Playing along, the bassist lifted a janky frog with a wink. âIâm very dedicated.â
She matched Lukeâs smile, amused. It was the most interaction he has had with her in months, the utter euphoria of it all bursting at the seams. Propelled by her smile, he slid out the booth and into Alexâ side, throwing his arms over the seat right next to Flynnâs head. The girl remained deeply unimpressed by him, gaze flicking past his physique. Damn. If he ever wanted to get anywhere with Julie, he had to get in Flynnâs good grazes. Kayla seemed chill though.
âWhatâs with the frown, Felicity?â, he joked.
Kayla giggled at the mention of Flynnâs actual name, the girl in question rolling her eyes. âAll Iâm wondering is why you have to bother us about napkins, Lukas.â
âFlynn,â Julie shook her head with an exasperated grin, âmaybe wait for your strawberry shake? I think youâre being hangry.â
Her friend loosened up, sinking back in her seat with a playful pout and mumbling a resigned âfine.â
Luke took that as his sign to continue. His gaze fell back on Julie, hoping he wouldnât sound too eager. âYou guys come here a lot? I havenât seen you here on Fridayâs.â
âWhoâre you asking?â, Julie asked, looking between her and Kayla. Oh, man. Small talk really wasnât his forte. He couldnât charm himself out of this one with music jargon or fake IDs.
His smile turned stressed, flailing his hand around. âUh, all of you.â
âSure,â Flynn snorted.
Alex slapped a hand on his mouth at her retort, almost in pain of not laughing his ass off. The prize of âWorst Friends Everâ went to Lukeâs - for fuckâs sake, couldnât the drummer at least try and help him out?!
âJust wanted to celebrate Kaylaâs good mark on her new song,â Julie continued, wilfully ignoring the otherâs behaviour. Slinging an arm around her friend, she shot her a bright smile. âHer bridge was amazing, right?â Â
All three boys nodded fervently as Kayla ducked her head bashfully, murmuring a âthank youâ and then relieved from all the attention when Nora walked up to them. Lukeâs body didnât twist to sit normally again, too invested in finally speaking to them, finally having that contact, that he didnât even care if he seemed like a weirdo. Julie and him! Conversing!
âSpeaking of music,â he casually uttered when Nora was off again. His signature smirk crawled on his lips. âWeâre playing a gig tonight.â
This peaked Flynnâs interest. Perhaps the prospect of food made her more amicable. âWhere?â
âRavenâs Nest,â Reggie proudly proclaimed.
Kayla frowned, worried. âIsnât that the bar with all the bikes outside?â
âThank you!â, Alex exclaimed with a sigh. âItâs insane!â
âItâs not,â Luke bit back. If Sunset Curve wanted to make it big, they had to play big! Gigs like these would get them on the stages they dreamed of. Soon, it was goodbye, Ravenâs Nest and hello, The Orpheum! âReal Californians go there to hear real fucking music.â
To his surprise, Julie hummed in agreement. âMy dad says it used to be where the subculture kids hung out before MP got cool.â
âYes!â His grin was huge now, overflowing with joy. This was enough adrenaline to get him through three gigs at once! His finger pressed into the cracked leather. âExactly! And weâre gonna slay it. You should come watch!â
The latter blurted out without wanting to, his eyes growing wide in panic as Reggie and Alex stilled in their seats and Flynn peered up at him with laser-focus. Shit. Was he telling on himself? Did she pierce through the charisma that this was just a poor attempt at flirting? God, he really shouldâve prepared his speech for impulsive moments like these.
Luke still needed to endure some growing pains before he got good at flirting.
Julie chuckled, a hint of red appearing on her cheekbones. It enthralled him. Was she embarrassed or flattered? âUh,â she bit her lip, âI donât know if I can get in. Donât you have to be eighteen?â
He raised his brow. âCâmon, you donât have a fake?â At those words, Alex dropped his head on the table with a thud. Luke had enough of his own shit too. âMortifiedâ didnât even come close to how he felt about his blabbering mouth. Â
Levelling his challenged look, however, he realised he wasnât lost quite yet. Julieâs eyes glittered with mischief. âI do, actually.â
Breath caught in his throat. Yup. Coolest fucking girl in the universe. Julie Molina had a killer voice and a fake ID and probably did a whole lot of other dope stuff he hadnât found out yet.
âJulie,â Flynn but in. âItâs a biker bar.â
âWhere our classmates are playing,â she argued. âI can always try.â
âYouâll die.â
âI think Iâll be fine. Like Luke said-â No. She could not say his name and expect him to keep his cool. His fingers gripped the conjoined couch tighter. â-everyoneâs there for the music.â
A careful smile slowly grew on Kayla. âWe can tell your dad youâre with us.â
Flynn gaped at her. âWe-?! I- okay.â Lifting her hands in surrender, she added: âFine, weâll tell Ray youâre at the movies with us.â
Wait, was Julie turning down a movie night with her friends to see him play? Did that mean something? Has he been so focused on trying to find or create a âvibeâ that he forgot to actually look for signs of her own? Damn. Now he really couldnât screw this set up. Sunset Curve was gonna play until their hands bled, hopefully impressing her just a little bit.
It was settled then. After both groups had eaten, Julie separated from hers and joined them on their trek to Ravenâs Nest. She was mostly talking to Reggie behind Alex and Luke, animatedly recounting a story about Carlos nearly crashing his drone in her keyboard. Jitters began to tingle his skin, that building excitement right before a gig mixing with Julieâs presence. It felt like one of his dreams materialised out of thin air.
How many times has he dreamt about catching her eye in the crowd as he crooned love songs he never dared to write? Granted, those dreams were centered in a hazier setting, Ravenâs Nest quite unromantic opposed to that, but he would take what he got.
(And after, theyâd worm their way through the masses of people, meeting halfway, and sheâd sling her arms around his neck and heâd pull her into a kiss and itâd be electric. Sheâd kiss like she sang. It was a recurring dream that left him in a good mood for hours.)
Without much hesitance, the bouncer let Julie in. Luke, unable to keep his giddiness at bay, squeezed her shoulder as a dazzling beam was glued to his cheeks. Julie got in! Julie was going to see him play!
Ravenâs Nest was expectedly filled with bearded, burly men. It reeked of beer and strong liquor, raucous chatter spilling from ever corner. They all probably looked like babies in comparison to these dudes, but he supposed his unfaltering confidence made up for it. Luke would get his boys (and Julie) through this. The stage was already prepared for them, amps and mics set up, Alexâ drums waiting in Reggieâs van behind the establishment.
âIâve seen you play before, you know,â Julie mumbled beside him.
His heart soared without trying, its rate going a mile a minute as his jaw fell slack. All his nerves intensified till a blush crept on his cheeks. âYou- you have?â
Her curious eyes flitted from the people to him, sheepish. âYeah. At Ecliptica. You guys were good.â
A clammy hand raked the ends of his hair. Holy fucking shit. âYou sounded like you never heard us before.â
âI didnât want to seem like a fangirl, or something.â A secretive smile formed on her lips as she leaned into his side. âYou know how school is. Everyone trying to be the best, but then act super casual about it?â Her eyes sparked in the yellow lighting, too close for him to think straight. âI didnât want it to inflate you guysâ egos.â
Luke sputtered out a disbelieving laugh. âYouâre doing it right now, Julie.â
âThen you better kill it,â she teased, nodding at Alex and Reggie hauling the drums onstage from the back door. âI think thatâs your cue.â
There were two things he thought of right as he ascended the stage.
One, Julie was fat better at this whole back and forth than he was.
Two, he had to direct at least one song to her from their thirty minute set. Just one. Just so that his feelings might come across. Where words ended, music bled from his soul instead.
And so, the band exploded into what they knew best: burning the fucking house down.
So weâre taking the long way home 'Cause I donât wanna be wasting my time alone I wanna get lost and drive forever with you Talking 'bout nothing, yeah, whatever, baby So weâre taking the long way home tonight We're taking the long way home
The giggly teenagers ended back in the diner after the incredible gig, shouting from the adrenaline and jostling arms to get points across. Even Julie joined in, much to his delight, tucked between him and the wall as she had a heated debate with an excited Reggie - harmonies versus basslines. Lemonades filled in condensed glasses gave them sticky fingers, hers once pushing his chin away when he told a particularly dumb joke and leaving an imprint. Luke was on fucking cloud nine. Â Â
Taking the upper hand in the debate, Julie sang a bit of one of their songs (âLet's seize the day, let's run away, don't let the colours fade to grey!â) with all the tricks in the book, silencing Reggie just like that. Alex high fived Julie, the bassist admitting she won this time. Deeply relishing the sound of her singing voice, Luke barely caught what she was saying after.
âThis time?â, she laughed. âThereâs another time?â
âWhy not?â Reggie wiggled his brows, unsubtle as hell when he shot Luke a wink. âDiner Friendship Memories Still To Be Made!â
Alex blinked. âWhat?â
Her eyes tracked past the boys, the smile turning more timid. It settled on Luke, the boy unable and unwilling to look away. He wanted this night to never end. Clasping her lemonade, she nodded firmly, as if signing Reggieâs silly Friendship Contract.
âYeah⊠why not.â
Magentaâs Palace became Luke favourite place in the entire world. Every Friday, Julie joined the boys at their booth, sometimes Kayla and Flynn too. Huddled in those red leather seats with mountains of fries, they shared the first slivers of newfound friendship. Luke has always been very cautious about who he let in his circle (Sunset Curve against The World), but six people in a booth felt cosy rather than suffocating. Like it was always to be like this.
Reggie found an equally enthusiastic jazz lover in Kayla. Alex confided with Flynn that he followed her playlists on Spotify and was obsessed with her DJ skills. Â
Luke and Julie created their own bubble without trying to.
It was weird. Maybe Alex was right and Luke did put her on a pedestal for so long. Julie was genuinely chill and easy to talk to, probably turned off by him before cause he had been acting like a blubbering idiot. Simply being himself was, surprisingly, more than enough for her. It lit a fire inside of him. Snarky banter about music that challenged him to keep up, overt flirting from him that kept her blushing, sudden ideas about lyrics that threw either for a loop. He wouldnât admit it at first, but she made him a better songwriter.
Who knew his best songs would be found on stained paper napkins? Â
One Friday night, long past midnight, the group stood outside as they bid each other a good weekend. Bathed in the pink glow of the LED lights, Luke felt it in his gut. He had to tell her. These past weeks his feelings had only grown tenfold, this incessant buzz rippling every atom of his body whenever she was close. Whenever she smiled, talked, sang. Stealing his beanie, eating his fries, sharing AirPods. Luke loved it all. Â
It was a lot more than a simple crush. Â
After Julie hugged Alex, Luke grabbed her into a tight hug. She instantly responded, wrapping her arms around his waist and burrowing herself in his red hoodie. His infatuated smile was hidden by her curls, so fucking happy heâd been impulsive enough to ask for a dispenser that day.
âHey, Julie,â he whispered.
She looked up, eyes alight with an emotion that left his shivering. âYeah?â
âUhâŠâ A smile trembled on his lips, unsure whether he wanted to drown in the pretty brown of her irises or continue talking. Now or never. âYou wanna get breakfast tomorrow? With me?â
He didnât have to live in the fear for long, a smile stretching across her cheeks as she shyly nodded. It was the first time heâd ever seen her this flustered, their hold on each other securing with quiet glee. Had he not been so mesmerised, the awestruck Luke would run a mile from the adrenaline rush. Â
âYeah,â she grinned, nose scrunched. âSounds fun.â
They found themselves in the same spot the next day, the taste of syrupy pancakes melting with his as he kissed her on the parking lot of Magentaâs Palace. Julieâs lips curled into a smile and Luke figured there was no better feeling in the world then that.
(Yeah, he could get used to this.)
Saturdayâs mornings had never been sweeter. Â

Can you list anything you unironically like in the games (and cartoons and comics) that you don't like?
I won't bother mentioning music, since that goes without saying and is to be expected for a Sonic game... unless you're Chronicles.
Sonic Adventure 2 (mixed gameplay-wise, annoying story-wise) - While I prefer Sonic's SA1 levels for a number of reasons, I still think his and Shadow's gameplay in SA2 is fun on its own merit. I also don't mind the treasure hunting gameplay returning or how big the levels are this time around, since Knuckles and Rouge are still fast and not '06 levels of slow. It's mainly the gimped radar that creates the unfortunate domino effect of making them a problem.
- Introduced Rouge, one of my favourite characters for how playful she is and how she's a lot more nuanced and intelligent than you'd expect.
- Some genuinely good scenes, like Eggman's trap on the A.R.K and Sonic escaping from the G.U.N. helicopter.
- Had some good ideas going for it, like the Pyramid Base and the Biolizard as a scientific monster instead of an ancient one.
- Despite my thoughts on the backstory itself (or rather, its execution), Shadow has enough depth and subtle qualities and occasional unintended hilarity to stand out from the typical dark rival characters you see in media.
- The Last Scene's music in particular is one of my favourite cutscene tracks in the series.
Sonic Heroes (mixed gameplay-wise, loathed story-wise) - The gameplay is fun when you're not being screwed over by repetitive combat, overly long levels and/or ice physics.
- Boasts some of the most consistently Genesis-worthy environments in the 3D games, up there with SA1's and Colours'.
- The in-game dialogue that isn't the same tutorial drivel repeated ad nauseam can be interesting, funny, etc.
- Reintroduced the Chaotix, which provided me with another character I quite like in the form of Vector.
- Bringing Metal Sonic back in full force and front and center in the plot after a long absence (not counting cameos and the like) is a perfectly fine idea. Just... not like this.
Sonic Battle (decent yet repetitive gameplay, mixed story-wise) - Emerl's arc is compelling, and it earns the emotional weight of having to put him down at the end.
- While some characters are iffy (read: Amy), other characters are extremely well-handled. Shadow is probably the prime example.
- Gamma's belly dance healing animation is fucking hilarious.
- When I was young, and the game was first announced, I was really excited about being able to play as Chaos. This proved to be my downfall when it turned out he was arguably one of the worst characters in the game due to being slower than me during the writing process, but I still recall that excitement fondly.
Shadow the Hedgehog (comedy classic) - The sheer amount of legendary stupidity this game has going for it makes it practically impossible to actually hate. It helps that it's not quite as white-knighted on the same level as '06... usually. You know you're in for a unique experience when you hear a gunshot every time you click something in the menu.
- By extension, Black Doom never gained an unironic fanbase like Mephiles/Scourge/Eggman Nega did, which means I'm a lot more willing to take Doom's dumbass brand of villainy in stride. He even has a unique design... a terrible one that rips off Wizeman granted, but alas, even that is a step-up from Fridge Shadow and Bumblebee Eggman.
- Despite being... well, Shadow the Hedgehog, some of the environments would fit right in with any other Sonic game, like with Circus Park, Lava Shelter, and Digital Circuit. Even the Black Comet levels look pretty cool.
- This game understands amnesia better than IDW does.
Sonic '06 (what do you think?) - The obvious one: Shadow's character was handled pretty well, even if it came at the cost of everyone else being a dummy and being forced to interact with Mephiles.
- Like SA2, there are some good moments, like the Last Story ending sequence with Sonic and Elise.
- In the greatest form of irony ever, I like Solaris as a concept and design(s), and its backstory has potential to serve as a parallel with Chaos without being a complete ripoff. Iblis sucks, Mephiles sucks, but I'm fine with Solaris.
- Introduced legendary characters like Sonic Man, Pele the Beloved Dog, Hatsun the Pigeon, and Pacha from The Emperor's New Groove.
The Rivals duology (apathetic outside of Nega-related grumbling) - There were some cool zone ideas in both games that were sadly let down by the restrictive and limiting gameplay. I particularly like Colosseum Highway for thus far being the only full-on Roman level in the series instead of merely having a couple minor hints of Roman, and Meteor Base for the unique scenario of the space station being built into an asteroid. These level concepts and others deserve a second chance IMO. (At least Frontier Canyon got a second chance in the form of Mirage Saloon, amirite?)
- Ifrit has a better design than Iblis. Not saying it's amazing, but the Firebird motif it has going on is a lot more interesting for a fire monster than the Not-Chaos schtick they had with Iblis.
Sonic and the Secret Rings (a very frustrating gaming experience) - Erazor Djinn, A.K.A. Qui-Gon Djinn, A.K.A. Dr. N. Djinn, A.K.A. I'll Take It On The Djinn, A.K.A. Not From The Hairs On My Djinny Djinn Djinn, is one of the best villains not associated with Eggman in the series. He's a Mephiles-type character done right, and there's actual weight and reason to his actions, however sinister or petty.
- I don't have strong opinions either way on Shahra as a character, but the Sonic/Shahra friendship is sweet and well-handled.
- The ending is one of Sonic's greatest moments. The sheer contrast between how ruthlessly he deals with Erazor and how comforting he is towards Shahra speaks volumes... Still gonna make fun of the mountain of handkerchiefs though. (Before anyone lectures me, I understand the significance of it and can even appreciate it from that angle... doesn't mean I'm not allowed to poke fun at it. :P)
- Another game with some redeeming environments. I love the aesthetic of Night Palace, and Sand Oasis looks gorgeous too.
Sonic Chronicles (my personal least favourite game in the series) - Uh...
- Um...
- Er...
- I like Shade's design?
Sonic Unleashed (overrated game and story IMO) - The obvious two: the opening sequence and the Egg Dragoon fight deserve all the praise they get.
- Seeing Eggmanland come to life was an impressive moment to be sure. While part of me does feel it didn't quite measure up to what I had in mind (ironically, the Interstellar Amusement Park ended up being closer to what I had in mind), it still looks badass and works well for what it is. I also don't mind the idea of it being a one-level gauntlet... key word being idea.
- Obviously, the game looks great. Not a fan of the real world focus (real world inspiration is fine, but copy-pasting the real world and shoving loops in it is just unimaginative), but it can't be denied that the environments look good.
- This game pulled off dialogue options a lot better than Chronicles did, since they didn't rely on making Sonic OoC.
Sonic and the Black Knight (just kind of boring all around) - Despite my gripes with the story (Merlina wasn't nearly as fleshed out as her unique anti-villain status deserved, which ends up severely undermining the ambition of the plot in more ways than one, and the other characters go from being useless yes men for King Arthur to being useless yes men for Sonic), I will admit it provides interesting insight into Sonic's character.
- Like '06 and Secret Rings, the ending is very nice... well, aside from Amy being an unreasonable bitch ala Sonic X at the very end.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (apathetic) - The admittedly few new concepts sprinkled within had promise. They may not have been as fleshed out as they could have been, but level concepts like Sylvania Castle and White Park, bosses like Egg Serpentleaf and the Egg Heart, and story beats like the Death Egg mk.II being powered by Little Planet, all could have been brilliant had they been better executed.
SatAM (apathetic outside of SatAM Robotnik-related grumbling) - I'm not a fan of the environments on the whole due to them looking too bland or samey, but there are some exceptions that look pleasant or interesting, like the Void.
Sonic Underground (apathetic) - The character designs make me feel better about myself.
- Does "large quantities of unintentional meme material" count as a positive?
Sonic X (mostly apathetic outside of Eggman's handling) - Helen was a better human character and audience surrogate in her one focus episode than Chris was throughout his entire runtime.
- Actually, most of the human characters not named Chris were legitimately likable. Including everyone in Chris' own family not named Chris. Hilarious.
- Despite arguably having the most Chris in it, I actually don't mind the first season that much, partly due to slight nostalgia from seeing it on TV when it was new, but mostly because Eggman actually acted like a villain for the most part, and certain other characters weren't quite as flanderized yet. It's season 2 and onwards where things started going off the rails IMO. (Incidentally, Helen's episode was part of season 1...)
The Boom franchise (apathetic) - Along with Chronicles, the games provide yet more proof that just because someone isn't SEGA/Sonic Team, that doesn't mean they're automatically more qualified to handle the series.
- The show had some good episodes here and there, and Tails' characterization was probably the most consistently on-point out of the cast.
- Despite not exactly being favourite portrayals for either character, even I'll admit that many of Knuckles and Eggman's lines in the show on their own were genuinely funny.
Archie Sonic (pre-reboot is mostly terrible, post-reboot is mostly... bland) - Whenever I doubt myself as a writer, I think back to Ken Penders, and suddenly I'm filled with a lot more confidence.
Sonic the Comic (apathetic) - Fleetway isn't a comic I tend to recall much of aside from how much of a loathesome cunt Sonic is, but IIRC, Robotnik's portrayal is pretty good. Different, but good.
IDW Sonic (stop pissing me off, comic) - Putting their handling aside (and being too obviously "inspired" by MGS in the latter's case), Tangle and Whisper are good characters IMO.
- Same goes for Starline, before he was killed off-screen and replaced with Toothpaste Snively.
- Execution aside (noticing a pattern?), the zombot virus was a fine concept on its own and an interesting new scheme for Eggman.
- I get to remind myself that I've never drawn scat edits and posted them publicly on Twitter.

đĄïžSPOILERS PLS DONT READ UNLESS YOU KNOW THEMđĄïž
(also its a very long post and I dont know how to put the continue reading thing so bear with me)
First impression on the cover: lovely. My fave colour.
Also awesome dragon
Also all I know about this is that its high epic fantasy and its lesbian
-----
Im so confused about the places
------
Okay Im figuring shit out
-----
I think I start to like Tané and also NiClays is such a coward wtf
-----
Ead saving Sabrans life and then sabran being like yeah, the saints
Like gurl
----
Got the maps. Things are clearer.
Also I think I will reread this at some point cause its honestly wow.
----
We all know Ead doesnt want to leave because she starts having a crush đ„°
----
Okay so Loth is kind of in the middle pf a conspiracy that definitely endangers his life. Also the princess is pretty (from Carscaro)
----
"It was strange, but she was almost sorry that she was here, and not with the queen."
đ I bet
----
Oooooooh
So Truyde is related to Jannart who is Niclays ex lover. Thats why Niclays is so protective of her. I see
----
And so it begins
----
Im kind of conflicted because I like Tané as a character (she fucking badass aND rides dragons) but nothing interesting is happening in her perspective. Meanwhile the only interesting thing in the east is Niclays who is kind of a douche. But then, in the west the big stuff is happening and is so entertaining.
----
Ooooohhh
So the sister form the orange tree that found that something and went missing (that Ead found out about) came back in the story. And the princess from Carscaro found her and took the object. And now its given to Loth.
I love how the story connects itself. You wouldn't expect it at first, but in reality they are all connected by some string of fate and they all play a role in it.
Amazing.
----
What the fuck
I cant believe kit just...died.
It felt so unnecessary
----
Woah. Such interesting detail about their ways.
----
Im not going to lie. Sabrans wedding and dress is bomb đđđ
----
I have a feeling you wont hold up to your word queen đ
----
đđđđđđđđđ
----
Imagine seeing a giant mongoose in the fucking mountains
I would laugh so hard that I would die right there on the spot. What are the odds
----
Imagine being so angry that you are not pregnant that the whole palace would keep distance and your new husband runs in the forest to hunt
----
"She thought of Sabranâs cool touch on her hand. When she slept, she dreamed of a bloodred rose against her lips."
Damn. Its starting đđ
----
I have to say this
I didnt realize it bothered me this much, but the fact that she is with someone else is painful. Like, right when I was about to say that its not the worst, they kissed in front of the Ead and I-
I felt it too Ead. I felt it too.
----
Katryne complaing about losing her secret admirer đ rip Kit
----
Uuuuuuuu Tané met Niclays
----
I swear Tané is so badass
----
Im so jealous of TanĂ© and Nayimathun đ I wish I had what they have
----
Im crying what is this tenderness đ„șđ„șđ„ș
----
Truyde, darling, wHAT THE FUCK
You did WHAT
----
Tané flying with Nayimathun reminds me of that scene from Spirited Away
----
"He took in the unfamiliar bed, piled with bolsters and corncockle silk, and wanted nothing but to sleep.
Instead, he went to his knees beside the window, and he wept for Kitston Glade."
đđđđ
----
TanĂ© walking to the jailhouse with her chin raised đđđ
----
*Susa dies*
Me: đïžđđïž
----
âEad,â the Queen of Inys said, âyou will be my bedfellow this night.â
Uuuuu
----
Great. Nayimathun is gone. Tané lost her title and is exiled on the other side of the continent on a goddamn forsaken island
----
Okay so poor Loth found out the truth. He doesnt believe it obviously, but he is also stuck in the Priory. And ALSO he found out about Ead.
I feel bad for him but in the same time I genuinely think he is exaggerating
----
âIâm no explorer.â
âYou could be, Clay. You could be anything, and you should never think otherwise.â Jannart rolled a thumb over Niclaysâs cheekbone. âIf I had convinced myself I was no sinner, I would never have kissed the lips I longed to kiss. The lips of a man with rose-gold hair, whose birth, by the laws of a long-dead knight, made him unworthy of my love.â
I-
I have no idea how to react to so much tenderness. I cant believe this.
I love their relationship, but not so much Niclays himself.
----
Hmmmmmmm.....what if Jannart is not dead and is stuck in the Priory???? đ€đ€đ€đ€đ€
----
âBe at my side for the birth. And onward,â Sabran murmured. âYou must always stay with me, Ead Duryan.â
I want her to say yes but I know she cant and this is just sad đ I bet that when Sabran will find out the truth she will be broken
----
I swear to god Ead is fucking crazy. She wants to fight Fyredel
----
FUCKKK
----
"Sabran smiled in a way that broke her heart."
What is this. This is so sad. She lost everything. And she will keep losing.
----
IMS CREAMING THEY KISSED OH MYGFUCKING GOD
----
"The silence of the Great Bedchamber was vast. Vast as night and all its stars. Ead heard each rustle of silk, each brush of hand on skin on sheets. Their breaths were hushed, held in anticipation of a knock on the door, a key in the lock, and a torch to bare their union. It would light a flame of scandal, and the fire would rise until it scorched them both.
But Ead called fire her friend, and she would plunge into the furnace for Sabran Berethnet, for just one night with her. Let them come with their swords and their torches.
Let them come."
YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HOW LOUD IM SCREAMING
----
âŹïžâŹïžâŹïžâŹïž
This will end so badly Im already crying for it đ„Č
----
Holy shit wtf they already know about them
----
I cant believe Ead has been back in the Priory for like a whole week and she doesnt know about Loth yet. I feel betrayed for her đ
----
Woah woah woah
Hold up
Kalyba gurl wants a kiss from Ead? Jesus wtf
----
Fuck I forgot Loth doesnt know the truth about Ead :)))))) well then thats going to be interesting
----
HOLY FUCKING SHIT TANĂ
She literally had a magical jewel inside her, fought a dragon with it and then started stiching herself up
Like
Gurl đ„Č
----
I swear this Mita Prioress is such a bitch like wtf. Im glad Ead is leaving
As you should gurl
----
Loth hearing for the first time the giant mongoose talking is so funny
----
Tané is in love with her dragon as much as Ead is with Sabran
----
âčïžâčïž God
I didnt particularly likes Truyde but seeing her head on a spike doesnt sit well with me
----
Meg and Captain Lintley â€ïžâ€ïž
----
âDo you think me a tyrant?â
âI think you a self-righteous fool whose head is harder than a rock. And I would not change you for the world.â
âTell me, Eadaz uq-NÄra,â she said softly, âam I a greater fool to want you still?â
Sabran finally looked at her.
Ead crossed the space between them. âNo more a fool than I,â she said, âto love you as I do.â
â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
----
The fact that Niclays doesnt know about Truyde đ
----
Ascalon being a badass sword đĄïž
----
Holy fucking shit
First queen is Kalyba? Tf
----
Oh my god
So basically both versions of the story of Cleolind are true but not really. What we didnt knew was that Kalyba played a role in them
----
EXcUSE YOU
KALYBA IS THE A HIGH WESTERN.??
----
Ead wrapped her cloak around them both. âPerhaps then I can steal you away.â
âWhere?â
Ead kissed her temple. âSomewhere.â
:')
----
I swear to god that right before Ead was poisoned I was thinking that she will die. And then BOOM
Like give me a break
----
âGood evening, Captainââ
âHush.â Harlowe was a statue. âListen.â
The song drifted over the black waves. A chill slithered through Loth. âWhat is that?â
âSyrens.â
âWill they not lure us to our death?â
âOnly in the stories.â Smoke plumed from his mouth. âWatch the sea. Itâs the sea they call.â
At first, all Loth saw was the void. Then a flower of light bloomed in the water, illuminating its surface. Suddenly he could see fish, tens of thousands of them, each full of a rainbow glow.
He had heard tales of the sky lights of HrĂłth. Never had he thought to see them underwater.
âYou see, my lord,â Harlowe murmured. The light feathered in his eyes. âYou can find beauty anywhere.â
By far my favorite scene
----
Loth becoming a pirate is something I didnt knew I needed đđ
----
Im so excited
Loth is on the same island as Tané
----
Lol
Funny how the guys from Feather Island know how to reach the Mulberry Tree without even trying and the other have to brainstorm for centuries
----
Loth and Tané? Wow. Definitely not something I knew I would like
----
Listen, Tané is awesome
Powerful and all
But fighting the Golden Empress for that key?
đđđđđ
----
I swear to god Niclays is so petty and mean :))))))) he is like "oh I bet this will upset Sabran" or "just wait and see how Ill find the elixir of life and not give it to Sabran"
Like child
----
Niclays= rat
----
TANĂĂ
SO HAPPY TO SEE HER LIFT THE SWORD TO THE GOLDEN EMPRESS
BE CAREFUL HONEY đŒđŒđŒ
----
What a pussy
Gets his arm cut off and is like "Im dying. Bye"
----
I love how Tané's dragon is so understanding
----
TanĂ© having a dragons heart â€ïž
----
It just hit me that Ead is a dragon slayer and TanĂ© a dragon rider and lover đ€Ą
----
FUCK
The sister of the priory found her
Of all ppl
----
Pls dont tell me Kalyba found Tané
Imagine the luck
----
Okay so she didnt đ€Ąđ€Ą
----
Okay wait
Kalyba actually found her
----
Yay
Chassars bird
----
Mission accomplished TanĂ© â€ïžâ€ïž
----
"Who in the world wears white on their wedding day?â
Yeah Meg, imagine that
----
I wonder how they will defeat the nameless one
Like I have less than 100 pages left
----
I wonder what is the point of Niclays in this story besides being an old fart
----
Oh my fucking god
Niclays and Kalyba sound like a bad combination
----
Ooooh
I think this might Seiiki emperor had an affair with the Golden Empress *wiggles eyebrows*
----
What in the fuck are you doing here Niclays
----
Pfffff
He wants to kill Ead :))))))))))))
Like please
----
The nerve this guy has
He just thinks killing Ead is so easy
Like EXCUSE YOU
----
I swear to god TanĂ© is as done with Niclays as me đ
----
Okay so this guys at least respects Jannart.
Good
----
Fuck
I wish Tané had at her that sidden thing Niclays brought
Then she would have a chance at Kalyba
----
Imagine sleeping through the end of the world :))))))
----
âI will teach my heart to beat again.â is such a raw line I want to die
I dont even like Niclays
He is undeserving of it
----
I seriously dont think Niclays deserves this kindness from Jannarts wife
----
Excuse me wtf what do you mean her side was damp in blood?
----
Okay
Time for final review
The conclusion:
So
This book
This journey
It made me feel like I read a whole series, but I didnt because it was just one and its soooooo gooood
Definitely a re read and going to buy a copy
Also I loved all the details about the world and it was so well built its incredible but its to be expected since it took almost 6 years for the author do write it
A masterpiece

The court was buzzing due to the excitement of the coming ball, Tsar Nikolai had announced five hours ago. It had been a while since the last time a big and glamorous ball was held in the palace. After her duties in the palace were done, she would search Alina and together they would harass the dressmaker until they made special gowns for them. She couldnât help but smile when she thought about her best friend and didnât pay attention to where she was heading anymore, which resulted in her stumbling into David Kostyk.
âSaints, David, Iâm sorryâ, she apologised and brushed imaginary dust off his kefta.
The durast looked as if he was about to piss his pants though. With a harrumph he adjusted the collar of his kefta and inhaled deep: âNo need to apologise, this was my fault. Iâm happy to see you though.â
Her eyes darted from his eyes over his body and back: âYeah?â
âWould you be my partner for the ball?â
The question came out of the blue, even though Genya knew that David had a little crush on her, and her jaw dropped. She didnât deal with that question yet.
âGive me time to think about it, ok?â, she exhaled and patted on his shoulder, before she rushed off. Her cheeks were burning and she hid it by letting her hair fall over her face, which made her run in person again. This time it was Zoya Nazyalensky, the commander's dark hair shined in the chandelierâs light and her blue eyes fixated Genya and that made her blush even more.
âExcuse me, commanderâ, the tailor mumbled and tried to pass the tall squaller but to her surprise she was held back.
âYouâre red like a tomatoâ, Zoya meant with a judging look, âBut anyway. I wanted to ask you, if you want to join my side for the ball.â
Zoya Nazyalensky was one of the most intimidating grisha Genya knew, but also one of the most attractive. She would love to be Zoyaâs partner but she would also love to be Davidâs partner. Hence, Genya could only answer: âIâll consider it, but I feel honoured.â
âSomeone already asked you'', Zoya asserted and glanced past Genya, as if the other person would be there. The etherealkisâs eyes narrowed and she tightened her grip around the tailorâs arm: âDonât make me fight for you, Genya Safin. Whoever is my opponent, they will lose.â
âAmazingâ, Genya gulped and pushed past Zoya, this time the commander didnât hold her back.
The next day began with nervousness for the corporalki. She didnât want to go out of her dorm to see what Zoya would do. Because Zoya would do something, for sure. Eventually she was forced though, because someone knocked against her door. Bracing herself for the worst, she opened the door but only looked into a servantâs bugged face. He was holding a huge bouquet of flowers in all forms and colours. A tag was attached to one and when Genya turned it around, she read: Good morning, dearest Genya.
It was Davidâs handwriting. Then, to her horror, a second servant showed up, also with flowers, but this time from Zoya. As long as the gifts stay flowers, I can handle it, the tailor thought but she felt that this was only the start.
After breakfast Genya set off for her patientsâ chambers but halfway there, she was headed off by David.
âWhat an incident, I meet youâ, the durast smiled shyly and made Genya doubt that it was an incident, âI have something for you.â
Kostyk pressed a hair decoration into Genyaâs hands and because she dealt with such things every day, she instantly knew that it was worth a lot. It was gilded and rubies were embedded in the delicate shape.
âThank youâ, she said, unsure how to respond to it, âBut I cannot accept that, itâs worth too much.â
âNothing is worth too much for youâ, David said softly and closed Genyaâs hands around it, âJust take it. I had fun crafting it.â
The following hours, the jewellery on her desk reminded her that she would need to make the decision between David and Zoya soon. Eventually the morning was over and she grabbed some food in the dining hall, to eat it with Alina outside at the pond. On the practice field was as always a lot going on, Botkin training young grishas and some Infernis were lightning up straw dolls. She enjoyed watching it, until she spottet Zoya approaching her, a determined, slightly angry expression on the beautiful face. The squaller stopped a few steps away from her, brought her hands together and before Genya could process what was happening, a small storm gathered. Zoya let it expand into a bigger cloud until the wind pulled at Genyaâs hair and every single person on the field was watching. Fascinating was that Zoya had mixed some sort of blue powder into the air, so that the wind was visible and it looked as if the storm had a life on its own. It deformed over and over again, from a tiger to a wild horse. Nazyalenskyâs expression was concentrated, but there was an affectionate sparkle in her eyes. At the end of the demonstration, the storm collapsed into a rose and rested at Genya's feet. Zoya smiled at Genya and brushed a red lock behind her ear: âPerhaps this makes the decision easier for you.â
Then the commander spun around and walked away, leaving Genya on the spot.
âAlinaâ, Genya sighed and frowned, âI have a serious problem and you are laughing? Iâm worried about what Zoya will do to David when she finds out, that heâs her opponent.â
âGenya, be happy that two of the most handsome and powerful people openly run for youâ, Alina grinned, âNikolai surpasses you in the amount of admirers, but except for him you are the unbeaten top. Enjoy it.â
Genya opened her mouth to say something but closed it, because she figured that whatever she would say, it wouldnât make Alina stop laughing. Instead she bit into her sandwich and tried to forget her admirers.
Harder though than done though, because when they returned to the little palace, the news that Zoya Nazyalensky gifted Genya Safin flowers made out of her power, got around the golf course. Some grishas smiled about it, mostly the oneâs that already had a partner, but the majority threw the tailor one or two jealous looks. Zoya was almost everybodyâs secret crush and having her openly running for your hand was dream material. To Genyaâs relieve also this day was over at some point and she walked back to her dorm, exhausted from avoiding David and Zoya all day long, when she crossed path with Tsar Nikolai.
His mouth transformed into a wide smile as soon as he saw her and he hugged her: âGenya, I hear a lot of things about you. For once, someone else is the hotter topic here, itâs refreshing.â
âItâs notâ, Genya sighed âWhy canât they just act like normal people.â
âBecause you are a commodity in demand, sweet heart.â
Genya snorted and clapped Nikolaiâs a: âI am no commodity.â
âI know, this was just a stylistic device to illustrate the situationâ, Nikolai assuaged, âAnd I think thereâs someone who has to say something to you.â
He nodded to the floor in front of them and Genya was tempted to turn around and run away when she saw David. He was holding a letter and definitely waiting for her. It turned out to be a poem and it was actually quite good, but she was way too tired to really listen.
It had been two days since Zoyaâs storm and Davidâs poem and Genya savoured the silence. She didnât need to wolf her meals down and use the secret corridors to walk through the palace in order to not meet anyone who might make something crazy to get her favour. However, her lucky streak ended the moment the freshly recruited grishas entered the dining room while breakfast.
The whole room went dead silent when the young grisha with the blond braids stepped forward and declared: âWeâre here to perform a song for Genya Safin.â
Before they started Genya buried herself under the table and wished she could make herself invisible. Across the room she saw David, observing the scene with an irritated expression. Considering Zoyaâs position it was a bit unfair - she could make Ravka sing for Genya, literally, and David had no such resources.
They made eye contact and suddenly she was very grateful that she had someone to look at who didnât laugh or stare at her in disbelief because the grishas began to sing an ancient love song.
The moment the last singer closed their mouth, Genya stormed out of the hall, ready to strangle Zoya for this action. Too much was too much. Eventually, she ended up sitting at the pond, trying to make slates slide on the water. By tomorrow she would need to have chosen her partner, because the evening after was the ball and tomorrow was also the day she and Alina would get their outfits. As she thought of her best friend, an idea formed in her head. What if she did the most unexpected out of all? Excited about her idea she headed back to her friendâs dorm and opened the door, hoping Alina would be there but she wasnât in sight. She would see her anyway at dinner at the latest and her concern could wait until then. With a content smile she went to her own dorm and opened the door.
âBy all the saintsâ, Genya whispered and stared at the cannon. The chase was engraved with the pictures of Saints and other figures of the old Ravkan tales. The metal was altered, so it was white instead of silver and the holding sparkled golden. The inspiration was definitely coming from Genyaâs kefta and the work wouldâve only been done by a grisha. And she only knew one grisha who would first off, send her a cannon and second off, be able to create a cannon. Pretty confident that she would never have any use of it, she walked around and lay on her bed, to take a nap.

Here's a slightly more light-hearted story after my previous very angsty one :') And yes, it's based on another Marvel scene... but the similarities between Thor and Loki with Roman and Remus are too good an opportunity to miss! :D

Better The Devil You Know.
Roman and Remus (brothers)
Violence and weapons mention
This was a bad idea. Roman couldnât stop that thought from racing around in his mind. This was one of the worst ideas he ever had, and he wasnât too ashamed to admit that he has had a lot of bad ideas over the years⊠but, if he wanted to save his friends and protect the Mind Palace. It was much better to work with the devil you know.
He approached the basement of the Palace, a place they were sent to if they needed to cool off or if they do something that could threaten Thomas. He took a breath before walking down the stairs with a confident flair that he was absolutely faking. Roman approached the green door and pushed it open, looking into the darkness with uncertainty.
A figure approached the door with a mischievous glint in his eye, and Roman rolled his eyes at the display happening in front of him. The other side slowly placed both of his hands on the glass and grinned maniacally.
âWell, well, well. What in the name of sanity are you doing here, brother mine?â He raised his eyebrow and smirked, goading Roman into saying the words he longed to hear.
âThe Mind Palace in under attack. The others have been taken⊠We need to take back control and rescue the rest of the Sides, if weâre going to do that, weâll need to work together. I need your⊠tricks.â Roman held his tongue and kept his words brief. There was no point in giving him too much satisfaction. He was furious at Remus for letting their friends get taken in the first place.
âYou must be so very desperate if youâve had to come to me for help!â Remus had his hands pressed up against the barrier that stopped him from coming out of the room.
âMaybe I am. In the grand scheme of things, Remus- our paths might have diverted a long time ago. Deep down though, I donât think youâd like our home to remain a shade of bright orange for the rest of time.â At the mention of the colour, Remusâ eyes widened and there was a brief sense of panic before he regained his composure, took a step away from the door and held his hands up in agreement. Roman then nodded before conjuring up his sword and shattering the barrier holding Remus in. He then walked out, almost with a swagger and an excitement at the thought of being able to act freely once more.
They walked back up the stairs to the main corridor and Remus couldnât help but be quite impressed by Romanâs composure. Everything is at risk, and he doesnât look angry in the slightest. He had to run a little to keep up with Roman, but he couldnât help but comment.
âThis is so unlike you, brother! So, composed⊠Wouldnât you prefer to use your sword?â He smirked and Roman rolled his eyes in response.
âIf you keep speaking, I just might⊠on you. Now, hurry up and change. The guards that have been created have been told to capture you on sight if youâre seen in the corridorsâ The anger was starting to creep its way into Romanâs voice, and Remus knew he could have some fun with this. He needed to, so he could stop the panic he was feeling. Roman wanted tricks, he was going to get them.
âFine, as you wish. Iâm not even here.â He closed his eyes and the green beam appeared, consuming his entire body. He reappeared in a dark hoodie with purple patches, a torn purple shirt, torn black jeans, converse and he even remembered the black eyeshadow under his eyes to perfect his impression of Virgil.
âIs this better?â He called out sarcastically. Roman did a double take, this was why he needed Remus. The shapeshifting tactic will give them an element of surprise. He had to admit, he could do a pretty good imitation of the others when he wanted to⊠almost too good.
âIt would be better company at least.â He shrugged, pretending he wasnât that impressed by the show. Remus rolled his eyes, almost annoyed at the lack of response.
âAlright, how about something else?â Roman dreaded what was coming next. He saw Remus smirk and realised that the green glow started to cascade around him... He didn't know what to expect, so he looked straight forward and ignored it.
"Ooh, brother. You look stunning." Remus cooed in a sarcastic manner. Roman looked down and was slightly startled at his appearance. His outfit was transformed into a red flowing dress, heels with his white jacket and long flowing hair.
"You have five seconds to change me back, or I will have no qualms with handing you over to the Orange side." Remus looked at Roman, and for the first time in their lives, he couldnât tell if Roman was joking or not⊠so he changed him back as quick as possible.
âFine. Iâll change into one of your precious Light Side friends since you like them so much.â The green glow flowed over Remus once again, and he returned with a blue polo shirt, cardigan wrapped around his shoulders, brown trousers, trainers with cats on them and the classic thick rimmed glasses.
âOooh, this is much better! The cardigan is a bit much⊠what are these shoes?! But the passion! I can feel is surging⊠Hey! Wanna have a rousing discussion about feelings?! Right and wrong? Lying?! I mean honestly, how do you deal with all of these emot-" Remus was cut off by Roman slamming him against the wall while covering his mouth harshly. The illusion fell instantly and Remus looked at him with an anger in his eyes. Roman pointed in front of them, and he realised there were two guards walking away from them. That could have been a close call.
Roman looked at Remus. The silent agreement was enough to confirm their plan. This had to work if they wanted to save everything they knew and everyone they loved.
They stood side by side, conjured up their weapons and followed the guards into the centre of the Mind Palace.
âReady?â Roman looked over, sword in hand.
âRight behind you, brother.â With that response, they charged forward. Ready for the fight of their life.

Till Human Voices Wake Us (And We Drown)âs timeline so far:
Tissaia:
Year 696, Crown Princess Skylark is born in the late hours of the night during the Winter Equinox to King Lestyn and Queen Amicia of the Kingdom of Acaidal aka âThe Continentâs heartâ aka "The Golden Kingdomâ with a mark in the form of a lilac on the nape of her neck. This alerts everyone that she was blessed with a soulmate, which means that by holy and mortal law she can never enter an arranged marriage; this also confirms she is the prophecy child and is destined to destroy the world.
Year 708, Since infancy Skylarkâs strange behaviour has caused rumours to circulate and because of this and her parentâs refusal to accept any and all offers of betrothals, Acaidal is attacked during the ball hosted for the Princess 12th birthday (âthe age of consent back then,â according to Tissaia). When their army is defeated and the castle surrounded, the palace is set on fire with her family and the courtiers inside, effectively trapping them. After her parents and her grandmother say their (rushed) goodbyes to her, the Queen takes off her signature pendant and gives it to her daughter, instructing a soldier to try and take the Princess out through the tunnels below the castle. Once outside, the building collapses on itself, triggering her conduit moment and the complete destruction of her kingdom by their attackersâ hands and her own.
Year 709, Skylark is saved from unknown captors, from an unknown location by Rectoress Depraysie after months of physical/psychological torture. Upon reaching Aretuza she tries to kill herself and sometime during the week she spends in recovery (after the Rectoress saves her), she argues with the woman and is forced to endure her Enchantment prematurely in retaliation. Depraysie changes the colour of her hair (her most famous feature) and makes her indistinguishable from Princess Skylarkâs remaining portraits, lastly erasing all evidence of what had happened to her during her time in captivity. She is, however, unable to get rid of the mark on the girlâs neck, much to her frustration. â The trauma produced by the fall of Acaidal, her imprisonment and her Enchantment would soon cause her to develop PTSD and worsen her depressive/anxious tendencies. Depraysie also suspected that a throat infection she had contracted during her stay in the dungeon would be to blame for instigating her genetic predisposition towards OCD into violent existence. â Afterwards, Rectoress Depraysie procures a body that is similar in build to her already favourite apprentice and âprovesâ by various methods to several monarchs that it really is her, successfully tricking people into believing that Princess Skylark is dead. After spreading some more rumours, she gives Nilfgaardâs Emperor, the late Queen Amiciaâs brother, the corpse for safekeeping. Centuries later that same skeleton would be returned to its âhomelandâ when the first king of the newly restored and named Kingdom of Cintra was anointed. Occasionally, new monarchs are known to ask mages for confirmation that the bones are indeed Skylark's and it is always given.
Year 714, She meets fifteen-year-old Lytta Neyd aka âCoralâ aka âThe overbearing, nosy friend she absolutely just toleratesâ. At first glance, the redhead tells her that her name is now meant to be âTissaiaâ and she embraces it, going by it from that day forwards. With time she grows to love the medium like a sibling and trusts her with the truth and the many painful, distressing side effects of the bond (both things which Coral already knows due to her psychic gift).
Year 718, Tissaia meets fourteen-year-old Margarita Laux-Antille aka âRitaâ aka âThe bane of her existenceâ. At first, she considers Rita âneedyâ and âannoyingâ and thinks that she âweeps too muchâ, but sheâs a girl recently orphaned, afraid and alone, so Tissaia takes pity on her and threatens a younger student into changing rooms with her so she can take care of the blonde, who insists on sleeping in the same bed with her when Rectoress Depraysie is particularly horrid. With time she grows to love the blonde like a sibling and trusts her with the truth and the many painful, distressing side effects of the bond.
Year 720, Stregobor asks for permission to court Tissaia, now a gorgeous twenty-four-year-old young woman, but is denied and warned off of it by Rectoress Depraysie. This second-handed rejection causes the man to turn on Tissaia and the sorcerer tries to punish her for his humilliation for centuries.
Year 721, Coral is allowed to depart for Temeriaâs court after her Enchantment, leaving a distraught, resentful and confused Tissaia behind.
Year 723, Rita âstealsâ Feyreâs assigment after their Enchantment and departs for Kadwenâs court. Tissaia de Vries finally departs for Redaniaâs, determined to succeed and prove Rectoress Depraysie wrong.
Year 832, Tissaia commits her first premeditated murder. It is an act that will slowly change her magic in a brutal, unknown manner.
Year 810, Tissaia is sexually assaulted by the grandson of the first king she served, killing him is self-defence and âslaughteringâ him in revenge. Margarita makes the scene seem like an accident, and Coral and her take her away to â hide her in â Skellige âfor many, many monthsâ so she can recover.
Year 846, Falkaâs rebellion commences and what first was a ânobleâ war changes into a peasant one, further degenerating into a massive witchhunt in which Mirthe, an ancient city of mages, is burnt down.
Year 860, She founds the Chapter of the Gift and the Art, and the Brotherhood of Sorcerers with the help of four other mages, amongst them future Rector of Ban Ard/Arch-master Stregobor and future Arch-master Artorius Vigo. Three centuries later, sheâd still be the only woman in the Chapter.
Year 870, The prologue - In late October Tissaia has one of her worst episodes to date, instinctively making a mess of her office and later getting high on a concoction she stole from Rita, who in turn bought it from an elf, to try and negate her powers (which tend to be unpredictable and escape her control during those instances). Amidst the delirium and a high fever she is still able to subconsciously summon an incredibly aggressive thunderstorm to the isle of Thanedd.
Year 1188, After 477 years of being constantly âtormentedâ by their bond, Tissaia finds her soulmate in Yennefer of Vengerberg when the girl stumbles at her feet in Tor Lara. In her desperation to not be parted from her, she strikes a deal with the girl after she expresses her desire/duty to go back to her family. She subsequently wins their bet and when they return to Aretuza the strategy she used prompts the girl to have a breakdown where Tissaia has to stop her from dying after she slits her wrists. That same night she abducts the girlâs father and portals to an abandoned barn in Cintra where she taunts and proceeds to torture the farmer, ultimately killing him after his body gives out by having him eaten alive by wild boars to cover up her tracks, locking all exits and setting the place on fire when sheâs certain heâs passed away.
Yennefer:
Year 1173, Yennefer of Vengerberg is born in the early hours of the morning during Beltane to a half-elf father and a human mother after over 18 hours of labour with a crooked spine and a mark in the form of an orchid next to the deformation in her back.
Year 1788, Her conduit moment is triggered by a teenage couple whose almost assault causes her to create a portal to the Tower of the Gull. Immediately enchanted by the stranger who finds her she almost follows her through another one but stops herself when she realises sheâd be abandoning her family. She strikes a deal with the âladyâ, where either sheâll prove that Yennefer is deeply unwanted in her home or sheâll fail at doing so; in the first scenario, she is to come back with her and in the latter âher chaos will be bound and sheâll never hear from her again,â which Yennefer simultaneously does and doesnât believe. Hours later she is cruelly bought from her father for four marks by the witch (as her mother calls her), losing their bet. After being locked in a room, she breaks a mirror and in a desperate attempt for control tries to kill herself by slitting her wrists with a shard of glass â âfour cuts for four marksâ â but is immediately stopped by her ânew masterâ.

Feliz Ano Novo!
A/N #1: Finally! Fic #4 of my Brazil series! In this story, the gang celebrate New Yearâs Eve in Rio.Â
Brazil series: Hottest Spot South of Havana (Part 1) |Â Hottest Spot South of Havana (Part 2) |Â A Wonderful Surprise |Â HistĂłria
Word count: 3688
Aliceâs outfit | Playlist (The last songs (starting with Carioca) are mostly bossa nova, except for the very last ones, while the ones at the beginning have more of a samba beat)
âHave you seen Alice?âÂ
Andre had just barged into the boysâ suite, looking slightly panicked.
âIsnât it more likely she would be in the girlsâ room?â pointed out Diego.
âI come from there! I wouldnât be here otherwise. Charlie, do you know where your girlfriend is?â
âLast I saw her, we were all by the pool this afternoon when the concierge called her over, and she said she had to go fetch something. Havenât seen her since,â replied Charlie.
âUgh! Iâm supposed to get her ready for the reception this evening,â said Andre, raising his hand to his forehead in desperation.
âAlice needs help to get dressed? Is she sick?â asked Barnaby, raising an eyebrow as he looked toward Andre.
âWhat? No! Itâs just that I am in charge of the way she looks, and if itâs not perfect, it will look bad on me. My reputation will be ruined!â exclaimed Andre, falling on a nearby sofa.
âDonât you mean you made yourself in charge of the way I look?â asked a voice coming from the doorway. âNot to mention no one in Rio knows that you are in charge of my look.â
âAlice!â exclaimed all four boys when they saw the Ravenclaw standing there, her arms crossed as a smile played on her lips.
âI thought you had a deadly disease!â said Barnaby.
âWhere were you?â asked Charlie, noticing the plastic bag she was holding.
âWill I have a dance with you this evening?â chimed in Diego, ignoring Charlieâs glare.
But before Alice could say anything, Andre took her arm and started pulling her toward the girlsâ suite. âNo time for that! You can answer them all later. Time to get you ready for the reception!â he said before his head popped back into the doorway. âThat also goes for you, gentlemen. Stop messing about and get ready!â
As the boys started to get dressed in their room, the girlsâ room looked as if a hurricane had passed through it. Clothes were all over the living room as if Tulipâs and Tonksâ luggage had exploded. Which, in fact, they had.
âWhat happened?â exclaimed Andre and Alice, looking at the scene before noticing Penny. She stood silent in a corner, her eyes wide.
âTulip brought magical firecrackers with her, and they exploded,â said Tonks, pointing her finger at Tulip.
âJae Kim is untrustworthy. He sold me defective firecrackers!â grumbled Tulip.Â
âThat does not explain why Tonksâ suitcase also seems to have exploded,â said Andre as he picked up a charred t-shirt, wrinkling his nose before letting it drop to the floor.
âI may have hidden some in her suitcaseâŠâ said Tulip, looking away, her lips pursed.
âMy autographed Weird Sisters t-shirt!â exclaimed Tonks, holding up the remnants of a t-shirt.
âWhy does Penny look shell-shocked?â whispered Andre.
âExploding pillow incident?â wondered Alice, though she had her doubts.Â
âNo,â said Penny as she walked over to Alice and Andre. âIt just hit me that my vacation would be way better without these two.â
âCome on⊠Theyâre not that bad,â said Alice just as Tonks turned Tulipâs hair purple.
âYou were saying?â said Andre.
âUgh⊠Alright. Andre, close the door,â said Alice as she dropped her bag on a chair and took out her wand. âSilencio!â she said, pointing her wand at both Tonks and Tulip. She then cast a spell on all the clothes in the room to put them back in the suitcase. âGood thing Flitwick taught us that packing charm two years ago,â she said as she watched the pieces of clothing neatly get inside the bags.
âI love watching that spell at work,â said Andre as he turned Tulipâs hair back to its bright red colour.
âHonestly, Iâd rather if we didnât have to use any of these spells. Canât you two ever be quiet?â said Penny as she sat on the sofa, glaring at the currently mute girls.
âWell, they currently areâŠâ pointed out Alice.
âThatâs because you used the Silencing Charm on them. As soon as it wears off, Tonks will scream bloody murder about her Weird Sisters t-shirt. Tulip will just say how boring we are for preventing her from destroying the hotel,â said Penny, massaging her temples.
Alice turned to her two silent friends, who were both looking down at the floor. âLook⊠I know your definition of fun may differ from mine or Pennyâs,â she started saying, âbut I think we can find a way to compromise so that we can all enjoy our vacation. But first, letâs deal with the situation at hand. Tulip, if you have anything else that goes BOOM, let me know so that we can dispose of them without creating a mess. Tonks, Iâm pretty sure we can repair your Weird Sisters t-shirt, and worst-case scenario, Iâm pretty sure that getting another one wonât be too hard considering they are all still at Hogwarts. Now, apologize to Penny.â
âAlice⊠they canât speak,â whispered Andre before making his way to the bedroom.
âOops, sorry, forgot about that. Finite Incantatem,â said Alice, flicking her wand.
âSorry, Penny,â said Tonks and Tulip.
âGreat! Now that thatâs over, time to get ready for the party. Alice, I placed your outfit on the bed. Iâll go back to my room to get changed and come back for your hair and makeup. Chop chop!â said Andre as he left the girlsâ suite.
All four girls looked at the door closing behind Andre when Tulip turned towards Alice. âAlice Beaumont?â she asked. âWhy is Andre Egwu always planning your outfits?â
âI⊠donât know, actually. I think it all started with the Celestial Ball. I asked him to create an outfit for Rowan and Ben, and he then wanted to take care of my look.â
âWait⊠he actually planned one of your outfits before that. Remember when we went to the Proms?â said Penny.
âYouâre right! Either way, beats being thrown fashion magazines at,â said Alice, rubbing her head.
âAnd if we donât want him to throw the magazines he brought for this trip at our heads, we should get ready before he comes back,â pointed out Tonks.
About 40 minutes later, the girls came out of their room, preceded by Andre. Tonks was wearing golden flared pants with a black off-the-shoulder top, along with sneakers, to Andreâs chagrin. Tulip wore a short halter-neck dark blue dress with a raven motif on it and bronze flat sandals. Penny had a yellow midi-length dress with a cowl neck that was a little form-fitting, paired with black sandals with stiletto heels.Â
Finally came Alice in a green A-line dress made from layers of floaty silk organza with a draped bodice. Her feet wear adorned with a pair of high-heel golden sandals with a golden sequin rose on the side of the ankle. Her accessories remained simple, with a vintage gold necklace with a charm in the shape of a heart around her neck, a gold ring with a beautiful indigo blue quartz stone on her finger, and a golden headband of overlapping hoops in her softly curled hair. The look was completed by a small clutch embellished with golden mirrored beaded embroidery.Â
âAre these⊠the colour of the Brazilian flag?â asked Alanza, who was waiting in the corridor with the other boys in a simple white dress and silver gladiator sandals.
âOh, Merlin, you think itâs tacky, right? I told AndreâŠâ started saying Alice, ready to head back in her room.
âWhat? Oh! No! It actually looks lovely! I mean, itâs usually reserved for football matches here; otherwise, we donât really wear our flagâs colour, but itâs very subtle in your outfit,â tried reassuring Alanza.
Unfortunately, both Andre and Alice looked mortified and ready to crawl under a rock.Â
âAlanza just said Alice looks great,â said Charlie, as he wrapped his arms around his girlfriendâs waist from behind. âSo letâs go have some fun and celebrate New Yearâs Eve before the party ends.â
âThatâs what I wanted to hear! Letâs go have some fun!â exclaimed Tonks, running to the elevators.
âBy the way, whatâs the drinking age in Brazil?â asked Tulip.
âTULIP!â yelled all her Hogwarts friends before Alanza could answer.
As they entered the Copacabana Palaceâs reception room, they were dazzled by the decor, fellow attendees, and the live music. After being shown to their table, the girls headed straight to the dance floor, attracted by the lively music. The boys chatted about various topics, until someone caught Diegoâs attention.
âHow is Tonks dancing?â asked Diego as he observed the girls.
Tonks was squatting, swaying her hips as she gyrated her fist above her head.
âShe looks like sheâs about to throw an invisible lasso,â said Andre. âAnd⊠yup, Tulip just decided to join her.â
âAt least neither seem to care about the looks they are getting,â commented Diego.
âAlanza really seems to be enjoying herself,â remarked Barnaby.
âIndeed. She and Penny are really graceful on the dancefloor. As for Alice,â added Diego, glancing toward Charlie, âher dancing skills have really improved since I first taught you two how to waltz for the Celestial Ball.â
âI honestly never thought weâd get through that without falling flat on our faces,â said Charlie, sighing as he remembered that evening.
âI heard you two nearly kissed that nightâŠâ said Diego, smirking.
âGood thing they didnât, or we might never have had that kiss on the Quidditch pitch. If it wasnât for that kiss, I wouldnât even be certain these two were dating,â said Andre.
âDonât forget the glow they both had coming out of that field last summer,â said Penny as she sat down. âThatâs more evidence they are an item.â
âPenny...â said Alice through gritted teeth, daggers shooting out of her eyes as the other girls sat down and Charlieâs face turned a bright shade of red.
âSorry, sorry. But Andreâs right. Itâs not like you two act like a couple around Hogwarts,â pointed out Penny.
âItâs called being discreet,â replied Alice.
âJae Kim did tell me he once caught them asleep on a sofa in the Gryffindor common room,â said Tulip.
âDid he?â said Penny, a glimmer in her eyes as they fell on Alice and Charlie.
âOh, look! Our food is coming!â exclaimed Alice, ignoring Penny as Charlie took a big gulp of his champagne.
As the waiters placed the plates in front of them, Pennyâs gaze remained on Alice, the corner of her mouth quirking up.
As they started to eat, Penny cleared her throat, âSoââ
âWe were studying and fell asleep,â interrupted Alice, not looking up from her plate. âNothing worth alerting the press. On the other hand, Beatrice mentioned something about you snogging a certain someone instead of helping him study potion.â Aliceâs eyes looked in Diegoâs direction before slowly looking up at Pennyâs face.
Pennyâs cheek turned a light shade of pink as she stared at Alice, ignoring everyoneâs gaze on her. She wouldnât, would she? Then again, when push comes to shove, Alice wasnât the kind to necessarily take the high road. No one could know Diego Caplan had once successfully seduced her. âThe food really is delicious,â she finally said.Â
âTalk about a segue,â pointed out Tonks as she looked between Penny and Alice.
From then, the conversation took different direction, from Alanzaâs time at Hogwarts to last summerâs Quidditch World Cup. Diego tried discussing samba techniques with Alanza, who revealed she had no idea how to dance a proper samba. She just danced to the beat of the music. Alanza seemed to enjoy listening to Barnaby talk about magical creatures. Andre was looking around at the other guestsâ outfits, relieved they werenât the only one in colourful clothes. Tulip and Tonks were whispering to one another, which made Penny down her champagne flute.
âBy the way⊠How come we have a champagne bottle on our table? I thought Alanza said we had to be 18 to get alcohol,â said Alice, finally noticing the golden liquid in the flute next to her glass of water.
âAh! I only said the legal drinking age was 18. But itâs not hard for teens to buy it,â corrected Alanza.
âNot to mention we do have someone who is 18 at our table,â said Andre, looking at Charlie.
âOh! Thatâs right! Charlie Weasley is the oldest one here! Thanks for the booze, dear elder!â exclaimed Tulip from across the table, raising near-empty her glass.
âDonât overdo it, Tulip. Champagne gets you drunk faster than you think, not to mention the hungover...â warned Alice.
âYou got drunk on champagne?â asked Barnaby, taking a sip from his glass.
âNo, itâs just something I heard my parents say,â Alice said, shrugging.
âCome to think of it⊠I never saw you drink alcohol. Not even firewhiskey at parties,â noted Tonks.
âThatâs because she got sick as a kid because there was alcohol in a cake she ate,â explained Charlie.
Everyone stared at him.
âYou⊠remembered that story I told you?â asked Alice, her hand over her chest, her eyes blinking quickly.
âHow adorable!â said Penny, clapping her hands together before resting her cheek on them.
âItâs sickening,â said Tonks and Tulip.
Charlieâs face grew hotter as everyone was looking at him. Why was it so impressive that he remembered something Alice told him? He didnât like everyone looking at him like he had discovered a new species of dragons when all he had done was remember a story. Taking Aliceâs hand, he said, âLetâs go dance,â pulling her out of her chair.
âBut⊠dessert?â said Alice as she followed him.
âNot really hungry anymore.â
As the couple made their way to the dance floor, everyone else at the table looked at them.
âThey are so cute together,â gushed Penny.
âHow long before he proposes?â asked Tonks, smirking.
âWell, according to Jae Kim, many have bet thatââ started saying Tulip. She realized all eyes were on her and said eyes were all wide. âIt was a rhetorical question, wasnât it?â
Tonks nodded.
As everyone else shook their heads in dismay, Barnaby looked confused. âWhoâs betting on what?â
âCome,â said Alanza, gently taking his hand, âletâs go dance.â
Back on the dance floor, Charlie and Alice were swaying to the bossa nova music playing. Aliceâs mind seemed elsewhere, as she kept frowning as she looked at something over his shoulder.
âIs everything alright?â asked Charlie.
âMmm? Oh! Yes! Sorry⊠Itâs just that Iâve been thinking about what Alanza said,â replied Alice.
âWhat Alanza said?â echoed Charlie, his eyebrow quirking up.
âAbout my outfitâs⊠colour palette,â said Alice, looking back at whatever was behind Charlie.
âAlice, I already told you. You look amazing in your dress.â
âI know, but look around. Iâm the only one wearing all the colours of the Brazilian flag.â
Charlie did as Alice asked. He noticed that many were wearing white like Alanza, while others were wearing various colours. Alice was right. She was the only one wearing the colours of the national flag.Â
âMaybe if I removed the ringâŠâ muttered Alice, removing her hand from Charlieâs shoulder.
âWhat ring?â asked Charlie, returning his attention to his girlfriend.
âThat ring!â said Alice as she stopped dancing, trying to pull the ring off of her finger. When she finally did, she looked around. âLeft my clutch at the table, be right back,â she said as she started to walk away.
Charlie grabbed her wrist. âWait. I can put your ring in my pocket,â he said, pointing to his pocket.
âYou donât mind?â
âOf course not. Unless your ring weighs a ton, Iâll barely notice it.â
Alice chuckled and gave him the ring. âThank you.â
âMy pleasure,â he said, tucking the ring in his pocket before placing his hand back on the small of her back while the other took her hand. âYou know Iâll always be there for you, right?â
Alice raised her brows. âItâs just a ring, Charlie.â
Charlie shook his head.âYeah, no, I meant in general,â he said, looking into her green eyes, âIâll stand by you, no matter what.â
Alice stared back at him, looking into his warm brown eyes. âCharlieâŠâ She started to lean forward whenâ
âAnd I'll never desert you,â sang Tonks in a whisper as she stood next to them with Tulip. The couple hadnât noticed them dancing nearby, too focused on one another.
âIâll stand by you,â completed Tulip, before they ran off.
âTonks! Tulip!â exclaimed Alice, ready to run after them, but Charlie pulled her closer to him.
âLet them. My own fault for sounding so cheesy,â said Charlie, a corner of his mouth quirking up as he rolled his eyes.
âIt wasnâtââ started saying Alice, only to notice Charlie raising an eyebrow at her. âOk, maybe it was a little, but most romantic things could be considered cheesy in some way.â
âYou thought it was romantic?â
Alice nodded. âI was actually about to kiss you when these two interrupted,â she said, her face becoming slightly red as she looked down.
Charlie let go of her hand and used his finger to gently lift her chin up. âWere you?â he said, leaning forward to close the distance between them.
As their lips were about to meet, Alanza arrived beside them, pulling Barnaby behind her. âCome on, you two! People are making their way to the beach for the countdown,â she said before disappearing into the crowd with Barnaby.
âAnd people wonder why they never saw us kiss in public,â grumbled Charlie as he took Aliceâs hand.
âWe keep getting interrupted,â said Alice with a little laugh escaping her lips as she took her clutch from the table.
They made their way through the crowd toward the doors that led outside. The horde was getting denser, and Alice could feel her pulse quicken and her shoulders getting tense. She needed to get out of that crowd. Now.
She let go of Charlieâs hand. âI⊠I think I forgot something in my room. Be right back,â she said before she started walking in the opposite direction.
Charlie looked at her silhouette disappear into the crowd, puzzled until he remembered her running out of the Celestial Ball. And her taking his hand after that concert. And at the Quidditch World CupâŠ
He spotted Andre and shouted, âIâll just go back to the room with Alice. I think sheâs not feeling well.â After Andre nodded to indicate he had heard him, Charlie made his way through the crowd to the elevators.Â
There were a few people around the elevators, but Alice wasnât there. She must already be upstairs, thought Charlie to himself. He got onto an elevator, and when he arrived at the Penthouse floor, he went straight to the door of her suite and knocked. No answers. He knocked again. Still nothing. Maybe she was on the balcony. He got into his room and made his way to the balcony. He turned to look over at the girlsâ suiteâs balcony. There she was, quietly sitting in a chair, looking down at the crowd on the beach.
âThere you are,â said Charlie, smiling.
Alice looked up, her eyes wide. âOh! Charlie? You startled me.â
âIâll come and join you,â he said, making his way toward the balustrade that stood between their two balconies.
âIâll go and open theââ started saying Alice as she got up from her chair.
âNo need,â said Charlie, jumping over the railing. As he landed, they heard something metallic fall to the ground.
âWhat was that?â asked Alice, looking around.
âYour ring!â said Charlie, a look of realization in his eyes. âDonât move. It probably didnât fall too far.â He looked around until he saw something glint on the floor. âThere it is!â he exclaimed, raising the ring from the floor.
His eyes suddenly widened as he realized the position he was in. He was on one knee with a ring in his hand while Alice was standing in front of him. He blushed, but the darkness of the evening prevented Alice from seeing it. She simply stared at him, blinking. Did she realize what this scene looked like? Charlie decided to try something.
âMay I?â he asked, taking her left hand. He slid the ring on her ring finger before looking up to see her reaction.
Alice raised her hand, looking at the ring on her finger. âI think,â she started, staring at the ring,â I was wearing it on my right hand.â
âWhat?â said Charlie, raising an eyebrow.
âYes⊠see, itâs a bit loose on that finger, but I think it fits snugly on the other hand. See, fingers areâŠâ started explaining Alice.
Charlie couldnât help but chuckle. Of course, Alice had not realized what the situation had looked like. Romantic gestures usually flew right over her head unless they were obvious. That was part of her charm, really. Lost in those thoughts, as Alice explained the difference between fingers, he suddenly realized the music on the beach had stopped and that the DJ was saying something that got the crowd excited.
âAlice,â he said, interrupting her monologue.
âYes?â
âI think they are about to start the countdown.â
âYou think?â she asked.
Before he could answer, they heard the crowd on the beach shout, âDEZ!â
âI think you're right,â said Alice as she walked to the railing to get a better view.
âNOVE!â
Charlie got up from the floor and walked over to Alice, hugging her from behind.
âOITO!â
Alice looked up at Charlie, smiling softly.
âSETE!â
âI love you,â she said.
âSEIS!â
Charlie looked down at her, his eyes wide with surprise. It was the first time she had ever said this to him.
âCINCO!â
Seeing the tenderness in her eyes, he smiled back.
âQUATRO!â
âI love you too,â he said.
âTRĂS!â
He leaned down.
âDOIS!â
She closed her eyes.
âUM!â
Their lips were about to touch.
âFELIZ ANO NOVO!â
âHappy New Year,â he whispered before his lips covered hers.
As he felt Alice melt into his kiss, Charlie couldnât help to think back at that moment when he had slipped that ring on her finger and the warmth he felt as he did so.

Sinners. (Mature).
So this is something I thought for the novel Iâm actually writing (or thatâs what I tell myself). The boy mentioned is completely based off Hwang Hyunjin. But I never name him so he could be whoever. Just like I never say the princesseâs name just to let you all live your dream (and by that I mean me. I wanna live my princess dream with Hyunjin).Â
Words:1764.
Warnings: Itâs very angsty. It takes place in an ottoman harem like setting, so some of the expressions could be politically or socially incorrect. Also there is mentions of blood, loss of family members, fratricide and prostitution.
She wasnât meant to be there at such an hour. It was too early, to soon to be wandering around the cold stone halls of the palace. Her satin slippers clicked softly against the marble floor, the freezing feeling creeping up her heel towards her leg, making her toes numb.
But she had heard the screams, the cries of agony, the many different prayers, and the pain had gripped her heart so tight, she no longer could sleep. If she closed her eyes, those of whom she once called sister looked back, void of emotion. The blank stare judged her, pale, cracked lips called her name softly, asking her for help, a help she would never be able to deliver.
So, she walked in the shadows, the veil around her frame mimicking that of night, covering her deepest sorrows and sadness. Hiding them, and her, from the sight of those who guarded the many doors and treasures behind them. She followed any noise that reached her ears, any little stimuli that got to her. Just to get rid of that anguish that threatened to end up consuming her.
This time it had woken her up. A thud, soft and gentle, kept repeating itself, footsteps, she realised. Many of them. And with those footsteps, the drag of feet, belonging to one who did not wish to keep walking, whose step had become heavy and painful, nearly unbearable. She had heard them before, the steps of the damned.
From experience she knew not to follow them, not to search for a damned man, one who was meant to die. But werenât them all? Werenât they all going to die anyway? She had seen them, the rope tightening around their neck, slowly, tortuously, as if it was nothing but mocking the soul it was about to take with it.
If they were lucky, the death of warriors would be granted to them as a favour from the Emperor. The sword swiftly cutting the air with a deafening noise, and before one could even tell, the cries of the women he left behind would follow.
For those whose blood could not be spilled, a silken cord handled by the hands of the most expert medic would take them in their sleep. Yet again, only the cries of their women following the next morning. She had cried with those women, she remembered, wearing nothing but black while following a trail of dark and beautiful wooden caskets adorned in gold. The bodies of the ones she had held closest to her heart inside them, their lives, their beautiful essence, taken from them forever. Reuniting with the so-called gods above, with whom they were now feasting, even if they had left a whole that would never be filled.
A light, warm and flickering, as were those from long white candles, illuminated a small portion of the hall she was walking through. Creating a halo around the door that hadnât been closed. From inside came voices, ones she could very easily recognise, and others she had never heard in her life. With them, soft whimpers, the cries of men. She had never seen a man cry before, so maybe they were just poor boys that had been catch sneaking around the gardens. Picking up flowers and fruits, just relishing in their youth, as she once had done. Before it was stripped from her like clothes torn away from her body.
She peaked her head, looking with her vivid eyes at what was inside the room. It was a room that was at the very limits of the harem, a room she had never even come close to. She had never known the need, nor had the curiosity to venture that far inside the eunuchâs wing. But the room wasnât much different from those of the odalisques, with two beds and poorly decorated. A mixture between the rooms of those who served and those loved by him.
Yet, it wasnât that insignificant detail that had her attention grabbed by the gut, keeping her gaze fixed on the scene unfolding before her.
A boy, not much older than her brothers, was kneeling on the floor. His head hung low, deep dark, greasy hair covering his face. His skin was pale, the shadows around his neck and wrists a sick hue of greenish blue. His body, long and slim, seemed to her, under the distressed attempt at clothing, more like those of young women and much less like the big, ample shoulders and big round bellies of men.
When he raised his head, forced by the sun-mistreated hand of a eunuch she knew well. A man covered in ugly creases and the darkest of faces she had ever witnessed, with his head shaven and shiny. She loved him very much, but, when his thick old fingers grabbed the pale skin of the boyâs jaw, forcefully making the poor soul look him in the eye, she felt as one who was witnessing the beating of a child.
His eyes were sharp as knives, dark as his hair, and shimmered with spots of gold in the candle lit room. His face was of soft features, with a small nose and round lips, his eyebrow harmoniously framing his face together. She had never seen such a face, such a captivating gaze. With hooded eyes and stern expression, yet looking like a god-sent angel to earth.
âLet him goâ. The words spilled from her mouth before she could stop them, and the eunuch turned to her, his robes sizzling around him. She soon realised her mistake and took on a powerful stance she had learned from the Emperorâs very own mother. âWho is he? What are you doing with him?â
A smile grazed her beloved wooden-coloured eunuchâs face, softening his features and lightening the heavy weight pulling her down. She couldnât help but smile back, softening also her stance.
âHe is a gift from a king to the Emperor of The World, your highnessâ. Her friendâs words made her furrow her brows.
âTo whom could he be a gift for, Gazlah? He is but a young boy. What use would we have for a young beautiful boy here?â Her genuine concern made the man flinch, not knowing what to answer. Even though he had known the young princess ever since she had been born and had been her closest companion in her darkest times. He knew of her deep thoughts and concerns; of the poetry she wrote in pieces of paper that later she would burn with the saddest look on her beautiful eyes. Yet, he did not know how to answer, he had never imagined himself in a situation where he would have to explain to a pure heart such a horrendous act that men all around her committed. The same men that later claimed to be knights in shining armour to her, bowing so low their hawk like noses nearly touched the ground beneath them.
âDo you want him, highness?â He asked softly, feeling for the boy. He had once been in his shoes, and a kind heart like that of the princess would have been for him a miracle sent from above amongst the pain and struggle he had to endure in his younger years.
She seemed taken aback by the offer, her doe like eyes opening, round like the moon above them. They turned back to the boy, who was looking at the candle on the desk, beautiful looks of hair like strokes of ink making him seem like a spirit, a ghost of a damned man. If she could take the pain away from his soul, maybe his happiness and joy would allow her to sleep again.
âYesâ. Was her short but assertive answer, her voice a soft croak. She finally stepped inside de room, kneeling beside him to help him get on his feet. He didnât even look at her, probably fearing the worst was yet to come. Even when, by the looks of it, he had already walked through every hell imaginable to men. âYou shall call a physician, Gazlah. Bath him, give him clothes and prepare a bed for him in my rooms. There he will stay until his health is restoredâ.
The eunuch looked at her as if another head had popped out of her neck. âYou canât have him in your room, your highness. He is a manâ. His words took her by surprise, not even having given that possibility a thought, and she held the boy closer without hesitation. As if what Gazlah was doing was pulling him by the arm away from her. Like a child who just got her doll taken.
âHe is a boy, Gazlahâ. The princess looked at the poor soulâs face, his soft and pretty features couldnât be those a man. Of that, at least, she was sure. âI can keep a kid in my room. It is no sin, for he poses no threatâ. She wanted to believe the gold shine she had seen in his eye was that of childhood.
Before her friend could answer, a heavy weight pulled her down. She barely managed to not a let a scream that threatened to tear her throat out at the sight of the boy she was holding so close bleeding on her white gown. His eyes white orbs without pupils, without a trace of life in them. A high-pitched noise rang in her ear, and she held his body to her while the man called for a physician to come.
She did not know his name, or where he came from. She didnât know his age, his history. She didnât know anything about him. But those sad beautiful eyes had enchanted her. Maybe the princess had never witnessed features like his, for he came from a faraway land in the other side of the world. But she did know that after looking him in the eye, she could not let him die. She could not let him go without a fight. If she did, she would never know peace again. She would never sleep.
So she held him close, calling him even if it was without a name. Asking him to fight just a tad bit longer, so he could walk around the palace gardens, so he could go back home. Her tears stained his cheeks, and she couldnât fathom yet why his wound felt so deep inside her chest, if it wasnât hers. But the pain seemed to seep in her bones, and she could not bring herself to question it.
(Itâll mean the world to me if anyone wants me to turn this into an ongoing stories maybe? Just let me know if anyone wants at least a second part or I donât even know. Iâm so self conscious about sharing my more personal work here be kind please.)

Has QEIâs tomb ever been opened?
Hi Anon!
Plain answer, no. But, when I was looking for more details on the Internet (and because I was curious, I never really investigated her death in depth) I came across two interesting sites.
Now, here I warn you that I got excited and gave you a very long answer to your question.
This first one is from the Westminster Abbey website:
"Her death, at Richmond Palace, on 24th March 1603 was an occasion of universal mourning. For some days the body lay at Richmond and then was brought by barge to Whitehall Palace to lie in state. Thousands of people turned out to see her funeral procession to the Abbey on 28th April 1603 when there was "such a general sighing, groaning and weeping as the like hath not been seen or known in the memory of man". The coffin, covered in purple velvet, was borne on a chariot drawn by four grey horses with black trappers. The coloured wooden funeral effigy lay on top of the coffin.
Her body was encased in lead within the wooden coffin and first buried in the vault of her grandfather King Henry VII (underneath his monument) in the Abbey. (...)
The original funeral effigy, by John Colt, that had been carried on her hearse was remade in 1760 with a wax head and new outer clothes. The original, and unique, corset from 1603 effigy still survives however and after recent conservation was displayed separately from the clothed effigy.
King James I erected the large white marble monument to her in the north aisle of Henry VII's chapel (less tall than the monument James later erected for his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots in the opposite aisle of the chapel). This was made by sculptor Maximilian Colt and painted by Jan de Critz. The recumbert effigy resembles portraits of the Queen in old age. The cost was ÂŁ1485.
In 1606 the Queen's coffin was transferred to a vault below the new monument and places on top of the coffin of her half sister Mary I.
The gilded collar, with a representation of the "Burgundy" or "Three Brothers" pendant, was added in 1975 and made by Mrs H. Hughes. The crown (designed by Janet Arnold), the cross on the orb and the sceptre the Queen holds are also modern replacements, the originals having been stolen centuries ago. These were the gift of Mr Brian Court Mappin. The railing around the tomb (designed by J. Peter Foster in 1983) is another modern replacement for a lost original. Although the effigy is now just white marble a drawing found in Germany, dated 1618-20, shows the Queen wearing an ermine lined crimson robe with a blue orb in her hand, a coloured dress and flesh colouring on her face. The four lions at each corner of the effigy were gilded. No trace of this colour now remains."
This second one is from the blog The Tudor Travel Guide and here is where it becomes really interesting:
"Elizabeth made it clear that she did not wish to be disembowelled following death (as would be customary). Yet shortly after the queen died, Rober Cecil left orders with the surgeons to do so, while he went to London to proclaim James VI the new King of England. And so the queen was embalmed and her body transferred to a lead-lined, wooden coffin.
(...)
During the period in question, Southwell reports how there was a loud âcrackâ from the coffin as Elizabethâs âbody and headâ broke open from the pressures of gases released as the corpse rotted. While the force of the explosion splintered the âwood lead and cere clothâ, people speculated on how much worst might it have been if the body had not been opened and disembowelled after death! It is interesting isnât it, that the story of this event occurring after the end of Henry VIII is much repeated, and seen as a sign of his obesity and gluttony. But here we have the same thing happening with his daughter, who was not subject to such vices!
(...)
I came across a book written by Arthur Stanley, published in the 1880s. He had been given permission to survey all the tombs in the abbey by the then queen, Victoria. It makes for fascinating reading since the crypt in which all royal burials are deposited is closed and I have never read anything specific regarding the Tudor tombs that lie beneath the abbey floor. However, Stanley gives us a glimpse inside these hidden vaults.
In trying to find the actual coffin of James I, Stanley explored a narrow aisle located underground between the eastern end of Elizabethâs monument and those of Jamesâ own infant daughters. He had already looked in this area before; it was empty and seemed of little interest. However, upon closer inspection, Stanley found a tiny aperture in one of the walls. Upon peering inside, he saw a narrow vault containing two coffins, one placed upon the other. Because I have never read this account before, I am going to include it in some detail.
Our intrepid adventurer describes the scene: there was âno disorder or decayâ except the âcentring woodâ at the head of the uppermost coffin had fallen in, and some of the sides were crumbling, which had âdrawn away part of the decaying lidâ. Although no coffin plate was present, a dim light illuminated the lid enough for Stanley to see a carved Tudor rose, âsimply but deeply incised in outlineâ. On either side of the rose were the carved initials âE.Râ and beneath the year â1603â. Stanley goes on to describe the lid being decorated with ânarrow, moulded panellingâ made of âfine oak an inch thinkâ, while the base was made of âinch elmâ. The whole thing was covered in red silk velvet, âmuch of which remained attached to the woodâ."
I don't know if you really wanted to know all this, but I found it so interesting that I wanted to share. xoxo
