You write a lot of characters from very diverse backgrounds (the Pax kids, Calex, Euna and Joey, etc) but you still manage to include details from their cultures that really show their connection to it. What kind of research do you do to be able to represent them well?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASK ANON!
*cries with relief that you're asking this instead of asking me why I'm so bad at it*
I am terrified of misrepresenting cultures. Someone I informally use as a sensitivity reader has told me that I overthink this. I screw up. A lot. Cultures can alter drastically depending on the geography and time frame. Sometimes I can't find anything on certain ethnic groups and other times I'm scared of misappropriating something. The last thing I want to do is hurt someone with how I portray something. But, I really want to have a diverse group that can connect with a lot of people, and would rather me told when I make mistakes so i can correct them, then not try.
Short answer: asking millions of questions and doing dumb amounts of research that STILL won't be enough.
Long-winded answer is below.
Where I... cheat? (Can skip to see where I don't)
Euna, Joey
I used to date a woman who is Korean, have two friends who went to teach in Korea, and live beside one of the biggest Korean immigration points in my country. Many a shopkeep has made fun of how bad my accent is when I try a little, "감사합니다," as I offer my payment with my right hand, left hand touching my elbow.
Korean culture is the only culture, so far, where I had someone speak out against how I represented a facet. I debated on altering the scene, and spoke with three cultural informants about this who said it was fine. However, it is something I am altering in the remake of the series that will ONE DAY happen.
Hiro, Yoshida
I have a friend who taught in Japan for a long time and speaks fluent Japanese. He's been an invaluable aid for both of them!
Flynn
I took Mandarin and college and had a VERY patient professor with my millions of questions. Also, I had a Cantonese friend who could give me some information about how it was for his family (different region though!)
Merry, Mercedes, Zaneera (and a little bit of Calex and Lapis)
(You don't know Zaneera yet.) This is several fold. I used to love studying religions when I was younger, so that has helped. I used to tutor and I owe a great debt to the Indian family that took me in and would have proper chai and homemade meals with me. They were not from the same district as Merry. I intentionally picked an underrepresented region for Merry, since most Indians portrayed are from Northern districts. However, I feel like I haven't been able to do proper research there and have been considering picking different districts for her parents, for fear of generalizing and misrepresenting.
My sister-in-law happens to be Pakistani Muslim and most of my brothers friends are from Pakistan or India (or... randomly proud country rednecks. His parties are, um, disjointed at times.) I absolutely adore her Amma and she's very patient answering my sheepish questions about her religion and culture. My sister-in-law also used to do a lot of work in West Africa and in Egypt.
One of my friends went to Granada, Spain, and provided information on Mercedes' hometown.
Where I flail and pray I don't screw up: The Real Research
Calex
I hit the books and newspapers and blogs a lot for Calex. He's one of the hardest ones to balance out all the facets that are nothing like my life experience. And. I got him wrong version one. Very. very. very. wrong. Embarrassingly. No one called me out, but I'll call myself out right here:
The original ethnic group he's part of was the Yoruba people. THAT ETHNIC GROUP IS MOSTLY IN NIGERIA, BENIN, AND TOGO. NOT LIBERIA. THERE ARE TWO WHOLE COUNTRIES WEDGED BETWEEN LIBERIA BEFORE YOU HIT ONE OF THOSE COUNTRIES. (In my corner of ignorant shame)
I didn't want this to happen again.
For the remake, Calex's ethnic group is now the Kpelle. I have.... loads of books on the Kpelle now. But, unfortunately, most of the research I found is decades old, and written by people who aren't always friendly to Liberia as a country. (Either Europeans or African countries that historically don't get along with their far neighbors.) So, um, I subscribe to a Liberian news blog. For Calex, I needed to research, trying to be aware of bias and bigotry...
Kpelle society
Liberian society, economy, etc
the Second Liberian Civil War
Sierre Leone's Civil War (they're neighbors)
The Ebola Out Break of 2014
Racism in Britain
Football clubs in Britain
British culture and slang (according to 2014. Gods it has changed so much already)
Mixed race and religion families in Britain
Racial theory on exoticizing and fetishization of black individuals
This involved preliminary research with, honestly, kids books to get a broad, sweeping scope of things, then digging deeper with adult books, then digging into academic articles for specific information. I'm still struggling with information about Kpelle religion. In the remake, I like to read authors who are West African that eventually settled in Britain before I write Calex's point of view. Liberian Journalists are also great for this (thank you Helene Cooper!) There's SO much more information out there today, and I'm excited to hop back into researching once I'm done with TFMO!
Ajax Pax and Axel Pax
These boys.
These gd boys.
Okay, so I went to Belize. I was really lucky and fortunate that I was in a situation where I could go. And I know I still don't have everything right. I lucked into our tour guide being Maya. No one had ever asked him questions about the modern day culture, and he was so kind with all the questions that I had. I was... gods, that person on the bus. Super obnoxious. Hand going back up as soon as he had time to breathe.
Maya people are treated as second or third class citizens in Belize. Their culture was being eradicated by some of the prostheliziation happening in the area. (Okay, hear me out: modern day Catholics often don't mind melding with other religions. Check out Vodou Catholicism as a great example of this. Not all, but most Protestant religions will often stomp out localized religions when they come in. Around the time that Axel and Pax leave Belize, Protestantism is stepping in and knocking out things like the Deer Dance. Fortunately, Maya cultural groups are fighting back against this and preserving it.) Their beautiful ancient dig sites are also often plowed over and dug up to make new, fancy tourism spots for rich, predominatelywhite travelers. This is actually where some of Santiago and Frasco's character development comes in.
The only original documents I could find on Mopan Maya were in Spanish. So, uh, I started trying to learn Spanish to learn Mopan Maya. So, with the boys, I looked into....
Belizean Creole
Mopan Maya society and culture
Ancient Maya history and rituals
culture and history of Belize, how their tourism industry affects that culture
Spanish
Latin American and Caribbean drug trade (Santiago)
Racism against Indigenous populations, both in Belize and here.
Catholic school systems in Belize
Circus/performance culture, busking, and homelessness.
I also tried to consider how people interact with their culture when they've been separated from it. Being from Belize means a lot to the Pax boys' identities. However, Pax tends to lean more towards identifying as a California kid and a Camp Othrys rebel. Axel, on the other hand, feels very nostalgic for Belize and is reminded of his connection to Maya mythology every time he looks in a mirror or checks his nails. Claws. Nail-claws. Because Pax was younger when he was removed from his home culture, there is a real chance he'll start to lose the ability to speak Mopan Maya if Axel doesn't drill it into him. I have a lot of friends who can understand their home language, but lose the ability to speak it if they don't practice enough. Pax could already be falling into this.
Axel
Okay so look.
You hear, like, two things about Axel's mother. And she should be WAY BIGGER and WAY MORE OF A BADASS.
...... I couldn't find any research on her ethnic group. *hangs head in shame* I've been considering altering her culture of origin to be from somewhere that I can have more research and give her a fuller character design. I've had a wonderful person who is very patient with my book-babbling suggest Maori, since they're very open about sharing their culture.
For all of this Research
I started my research in 2014, TEN YEARS AGO, and did the majority of it about 7-6 years ago. There are SO MANY MORE RESOURCES NOW! *DROOLS* and BLOGS and YOUTUBE CHANNELS! I'm all about verifying resources, but I'm so excited by how much research is out there and how much ethnic groups are getting to share their own cultures and instead of being talked about by those outside of it. My original degree was in cultural anthropology, so this is a passion of mine. Once I'm done with TFMO, I'm really excited to dive back into the newer resources--maybe getting to alter and fix up somethings for the next version of the series!
.... I hope this long-winded rant helped >>''''' Thank you for reading all of it if you made it this far!

Still conflicted about which language to study for university because at this point I need to choose a language that will serve me the best in the future so I narrowed it down to the 3 languages official at the UN which I don't speak which are Arabic, Spanish, and Russian. I wanted to do Arabic as it interests me the most and I have a bunch of relatives (including relatives who are closer to my age) who speak standard Arabic (Pakistani-Saudis) but they're like one to two courses short for it to be offered as a minor. Meanwhile Spanish just kind of bores me, not in an offensive way, but in a "I already speak French and am learning Italian and the cognates thrill expires for me after romance language #2" way. And then for Russian it kind of feels strange because I previously gave up on it because I didn't like my tutor (and then COVID happened) and I do find Russian history interesting so it could serve as a motivator but speaking of Russian history, I'm concerned about its career valuability going down (associated with Ukraine invasion etc and at the Olympics opening ceremony this past August they used Hindi instead of Russian in multilingual captions) so all of these things I am worried about. I think my current course of action is to send an email to the Arabic co-ordinator asking if maybe soon there will be enough courses but if not, who knows.

20 FEB 2024
This project started as me wanting to do an exhibition in Pakistan as an intervention in 2022 January when I started the course. I changed this topic, still remaining in my comfort zone, to a psychology research question about art education and equity in the arts. I remained confused and uninspired for the rest of the year.
I took a year out and then came back in 2024 ready to continue my project. I was finally able to wrap my head around creating change in London as opposed to Pakistan ,my comfort zone, however I was still stuck on educational psychology as a tool for change. I managed to converse with my peers on the course as well as my tutor and course leader and started to focus in on a research question. How can I give Pakistani artists a voice in London? so the process of hosting an exhibition in London will require many interventions.
On Jan 23, I attended a Pak Soc event after my zoom call with Elizabeth
On Feb 5, I hosted a networking mixer where I was able to recruit a few female artists for the exhibition I plan to put on, and we began to try find our commonalities when discussing the theme.
On Feb 6, I went to the second Pak Soc event to further the networking I need to do, and spread word on the exhibition opportunity as well as find artists.
It would be nice to get the group together soon, I will do this by spending a few hours everyday messaging artists on instagram and emailing, texting, getting in touch and spreading word.

An Indo–Pak Friendship Bond
This is a story of a friendship bond between two girls, born and brought up in UAE, belonging to two different religions, but holding the passports of two countries who are fighting each other. A tale of an Indo-Pak bond. As a token of that friendship, Dubai witnessed the launch of the best dental and aesthetic center in the Middle East.
Niya Roy, an Indian, and Seham Asad, a Pakistani, broke down the borders to create a friendship garden. Niya is the daughter of Hollywood director and global businessman Sir Sohan Roy. Like her father, she is a Naval Architect and holds a Master's degree in the subject. But, due to her keen interest in hypnotherapy, Niya works part-time in that field. Niya, the Chief Happiness Officer of Aries Group, is also an investor in several ventures. She is already an established Hypnotherapist and one of the top 7 podcasters in Middle East.
While Seham , daughter of Asad Ali Khan, a well established buisnessman in the field of travel and tourism, born and brought up in Fujairah, she completed her dental degree from Ajman University with First Rank and pursued her career as a dental surgeon and clinical tutor at the same university she graduated from. Her parents passed away unexpectedly, making her the sole supporter of her younger brother and sister. During this time, Niya and Seham's friendship blossomed and turned into a family bond. However, when they realized that the distance between Fujairah and Dubai was a problem for their friendly meetings, to bring Seham's family from Fujairah to Dubai, the idea of a dental clinic was envisaged. But the small idea quickly turned massive.
Along with Seham, seven specialists in the field of dental and aesthetics and the most modern equipment were added including many uniques ones to make it the best. When the massive top class clinic found headquarters at the famous and the most expensive location in Dubai facing the JBR walk & beach, everyone around was shocked. The Aries Dental and Aesthetic Clinic facility has been disinfected using Ten Shield's virus-free air mask to make it unique and safe . A project is also initiated to detect dental-skin-cosmetic problems of everyone in a family or institution using the advanced facilities available in Clinic for an affordable rate and cure it well in advance before getting complicated. Aries will be the first Dental and Aesthetic clinic to offer the services of "Cliniqally," a revolutionary online consultancy platform too.
Two friends who had to travel more than 100 kilometers now meet in adjacent rooms, developing unique and innovative ideas to advance their joint venture. At the heart of JBR, Dubai, they strive to provide state-of-the-art five-star treatment to enhance beauty, confidence and anti aging with reputed experts of both Dental and Aesthetic Industry.
Seham's younger brother, Saad, works as an Inside Sales Manager for a reputed multinational company in Dubai, and her younger sister, Sara, works with Emirates Airlines at the Dubai Airport. Her older sister, Seher, also a dental surgeon, is a part of the new clinic. Sharing food and jokes at the dinner table, leaving aside the border issues or religious thoughts, let the love and friendship among these friends grow strong and spread among the 1.6 billion people living in these two countries.

re INVOLUNTARY ACTIONS..
re involuntary actions-- I wrote to Javatasi Dasa... and afterwards looked and I had written I am a useless painter and poet.. I KNOW I WOULD NEVER WRITE THIS .. voice over from lab. It was the Pakistani in the lab you fed it on into the machine as you were writing. A lot of people have said nasty things about me and then said-- I didn't say that. Their friend tells them - you did.. huh? no not me. Aneesa Somali Stubbins Lane, is not back yet, We fed into her brain all last year so she got really good marks and fed into her mind to copy from Fekete's books she refused to return to her erstwhile tutor. besides teaching books, I had given her a whole library of dozens of History novels, stories of the Kings and Queens of England since the beginning, lovely stories, which I thought would help her to understand English history, besides normal teaching history and maths books and books to help her little brother with his studies--. Well, sometimes nothing you do for some people is good enough for them... I don't think I have ever done so much for anyone-- even my own family. quote At lab we don't want her to come back. When she does come back, she'll ask for a council flat in a different part of Sheffield so she doesn't have to go to Longley College where they know

Your poem was recently published as a part of the Protest Poetry collection and you wrote an essay for the Pathways collection, both for Good Day, Cork. When did you start writing? Do you prefer to write poetry or prose, or both?
I started writing at my school age. I use to write in my own language which is Urdu and expressed my thoughts in both poetry and prose. I tried to look at the world in the shoes of others which helped me to make many friends from different age groups who shared their encounters. I feel writing in any form is beautiful but through poetry, many messages can be sent across and readers imagine them according to their own lived experiences.
Can you tell us more about your creative process? Do you have a favourite writing space?
I have always things going on in the back of my mind which is never planned. Any reading, listening to other stories, experience, overwhelmed emotions, cause and effect impact, environmental influence, day-to-day life and family challenges – all contribute to my creative process. I do not have any specific writing space. If I get in the mood to write, I write while sitting on a bus, park, room or anywhere. I just need a feeling and mood as a stimulus and of course time.
Would you look on writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
Yes, writing is a spiritual practice. It is a reflection of body and soul needs which need a sense of attainment, attention and eagerness. It balances the needs, aspirations and soul journey. We have to discover our soul pathways through reading, writing, listening and expressing through spiritual learning practices.  Anger is a very strong emotion which needs to be translated into a good expression and poetry, art, writing, creativity makes this possible. Also dealing with mental health, we need to reflect on ourselves that all senses of learning are working together, with full potential for smoothness of our mental and physical world.
Where do you seek inspiration from?
Just like life, you learn in multiple ways- people, books, places, nature, feeling, success, failure, religion, relationships, news, conversation, dialogue, work, research, love, knowing yourself, dreams, movies, ideas, and sometimes no idea where I get ideas too! I definitely look into that idea that challenges me as a person, questions my presence, and touches the soul, asks questions to reason my own creation and creativity and character.   There is not a single person in my life, I met and did not get inspiration from. If you ask me my first inspiration, I would name Allama Iqbal, a 20th Century poet, South Asian writer, philosopher, politician and man of vision. I was so addicted to his philosophy of life that it boosted my morality, self-reliance, courage and resilience, dedication, confidence, self-respect, sense of achievement, dignity and hope. The language he used, worked as a spiritual revolution for me. Just a short quote from his poetry
‘Delve into your soul and there seek our life’s buried tracks;
Will you not be mine? Then be not mine, be your own right/your own self!’
What book would you recommend to our readers?
I would recommend readers read the English translation of the Quran, not by considering it as a religious book but by analysing it from many perspectives. I read it every day and derived the essence of my life -it consists of stories, ups and downs of nations, sociological aspects, language and literature, civilization, rise and fall of civilizations, character-building, love, care, right and responsibilities, the guidance of life and quality of life. It helped me to set up my priorities, sense of real life, hard work, timetable, and work-life balance. It gave me the purpose that humanity starts from yourself (self-kindness), and spreads to family and then to the community. It developed my love of nature and understood the delicate messages it gives. I developed research methodologies from Quran – from investigations to the highest aspects of intellect. There are parts in it that credit the wisdom and vision in understanding the universe. It inspires the readers through monologue, historical and contemporary themes and character-building to community-building.

A fun snack
"Oi!"
Gi-hun cried out as he ran towards the swings, seeing Ali and Sangwoo already there. They were both reading from an English book. Ali understood it faster than he was learning basic Korean, so most of the time, they communicated that way. Sangwoo was always interested in learning it more, while Gi-hun couldn't really care for it until making friends with Ali motivated him to do so. This way, Sangwoo and Gi-hun were getting head starts in their English lessons than the rest of the class, though Sangwoo more than Gi-hun. And the two worked together to help Ali's studies on basic Korean. The teacher assistant spent most of her time tutoring the Pakistani during class, but he found it much more fun and motivating with Sangwoo and Gi-hun helping him.
"You're too loud, Gi-hun," Sangwoo chided lightly, both he and Ali looking up from the book. "Why'd you call us here?"
Gi-hun simply grinned widely, before bring out rectangular Tupperware. "Dad and mom made some today, and gave me three for us!"
Sangwoo explained to Ali what Gi-hun said first before they checked what he was talking about. Inside it, there were three circular biscuit-like snacks, with a patterned shape at the center, and three needles as well. He kept it cool, but Sangwoo's eyes gleamed at the sight of the prospective game and snack. His best friend smirked, seeing through his mask. However, Ali looked thoroughly confused.
"What this is it?" Ali asked, in broken Korean and English.
The two were already used to puzzling out his speech, so it didn't take time for them to understand. "It's like a game, that you can eat. Uh... Honeycomb." Sangwoo said.
Ali was familiar with the English word.
"Yeah, today Ali birthday, you choose first! saengil chukahamnida! Happy birthday!" He placed the Tupperware on the empty swing, spreading out the three snacks. "Choose! Then we show to play."
Touched with the gesture, Ali smiled. Thanking him in Korean, one of the first phrases he wanted to learn. Because he knew he'd be saying it a lot to his only two friends. Getting the general idea, he examined the snacks and made a gesture of the one of his choice. "Dariya."
"Huh?"
"Dariya?" Ali made a motion with his finger.
"Ah, circle, okay!" Gi-hun took the piece and gave it to Ali.
Sangwoo took the next piece, which was the umbrella.
"Aw, I wanted the fun shape." Gi-hun complained.
Sangwoo rolled his eyes, placing it back, before taking the one with the triangle instead. He took the lid, and gave Ali the book. "This needle." He held it up for the Pakistani to see, "Poke. Outline." He gestured to the lines, "Shape. No crack. Clear?"
"Ah... Yes. Okay."
Sangwoo grinned, looking back to Gi-hun, "Last to finish pushes winners first in the swings."
"You're on!" Gi-hun grinned, giving a determine pose with his fist clenched. "Just because my shape is the hardest, doesn't mean I'll lose!"
Ali blinked, "What?"
Sangwoo explained it to him, as much as he could. Ali seemed to understood it though. "Ali is birthday boy. So win or lose, you still get swing pushing. Okay?"
"Thank you!"
In the end, despite what he said, Gi-hun pushed his friends on the swings before they moved to playing in the Jungle gym. Ali enjoyed his first birthday with his two friends and told his parents about it when he got home that day. He should ask their teacher when their birthdays were, so he can return the favor next time.
