Arthur has known for a while that he’s bi. He’s known for about as long that he finds Merlin attractive, too. They are friends though, and there are a hundred reasons why they cannot happen, no matter what Arthur otherwise thinks about it.

ive realized that the only one i’m even remotely comfortable killing off in a fic is leon. not because i don’t like him i do. but if you said to me you’re allowed to revoke all major character deaths on the bbc fantasy show merlin but you HAVE to keep one in reserve and give it to someone to balance all the deaths you undid. then it would have to be leon that’s all

Merlin’s forearms are a mystery.

Truly.

Now, in the interest of putting things into context, everyone within Arthur’s circle of daily acquaintances can be said to boast a pair of forearms (except that stable lad who still does a good job with the one remaining arm at his disposal). So, with the exception of Alfred, everyone has a pair of functioning upper limbs. Some of those forearms are hairy, some are smooth. Some are dark, some are pale. Some are spindly, and some are Percival’s. But the one thing they all have in common is that whatever their appearance, they all serve their purpose – and Arthur has absolutely no interest in them beyond the tasks they can accomplish.

Therefore, pray someone explain to Arthur why it is that the sight of Merlin’s bare forearms inevitably makes his mouth run dry.

It is a complete and irksome mystery.

Arthur is inclined to think that they are, on the whole, just regular forearms. But the way they affect him is both baffling and irresistible.

Percival’s battering rams are arguably a thing of beauty, yet Arthur has never had his heart stumble in his chest while gazing upon them wringing laundry. Elyan has the steel arms of a blacksmith for Heaven’s sake, and Arthur’s breath has never hitched in his throat from catching a glimpse of them carrying hauberks and assorted weaponry. Nor has he lost his train of thought from being unexpectedly confronted with Leon’s fine forearms glistening wet and dripping with bath water.

No – all these things have only ever happened for and with Merlin’s forearms.

Arthur would like to think he is suffering from some kind of weird affliction, or maybe some sort of pointless enchantment. But it all feels much too shamefully visceral and instinctive to be so easily excused by exterior influences.

When Arthur tries to be rational about his untoward obsession, he can argue objectively that Merlin’s forearms are aesthetically average. Neither too hairy nor too smooth. Neither too pale nor too dark. Neither too thin nor too thick.

They’re just… long and solid and beautifully virile.

And they make Arthur’s heart do sickening flips in his ribcage whenever they’re on display.

It is just as well that Merlin favours ill-fitting garments that are too long in the sleeves, for otherwise the spellbound prince would probably get very little done – these forearms are impossible to ignore when they’re in the room in all their twin, deceptively strong, masculine glory.

They’re so unchaste somehow. Arthur finds them entrancing.

Who even heard of such a thing as entrancing forearms?!

A mixed clamour erupts in the tavern, half-cheer, half-groan. Merlin has won his arm-wrestling match, much to the uninformed bystanders’ dismay. Arthur’s knights are in stitches, though, and a raucous Gwaine raises Merlin’s victorious arm high in celebration. He rattles him so vigorously in his drunken mirth that Merlin ends up chuckling with his tunic askew and a more plunging neckline than intended.

Which means Arthur is awarded this rarest of impossible visions – a wanton sliver of pale chest – and has to down his tankard of mead a little too fast to put out the nascent heat in the pit of his stomach.

Pairing: Arthur Pendragon x Lost Princess!reader

Warnings: Fluff, minor angst, open ending, the knights are dorks, but they mean well, I forgot how much I love this group of dollapheads, my boys are back, Merlin is lowkey bestie, Arthur is slow to recognizing people, Uther is a butt, he is the annoyance of my life, but needed for the plot

“There seems to be someone more worthy of wielding a sword than you,” Merlin tells his highness.

“Shut up, Merlin,” Arthur mumbles, watching with bated breath as you fight the bandits, all on your own.

Gwaine and Percival sneak up behind where the rope holding them is, whispering to Merlin, who latches onto Arthur.

The blond tries to shove him off, not understanding why he’s holding him.

“Merlin, get off-”

They tumble to the floor.

Merlin lays there out of breath, trying to get the oxygen back into his lungs as the two knights pull the prince off his servant.

You fall to your knees, reaching for your dagger as a hand pulls you back to him.

You spin around, kicking the nameless man in the face; he falls back, howling in pain, giving you the opportunity to take his life before he could take yours.

You take deep breaths, unsure of what to do next.

Finally remembering the two idiots in the net, you push yourself up and brush off the dirt and leaves.

Your eyes rake over the four, furrowing your brows at the sight of the three and- “Merlin?”

Arthur furrows his brows, “you two know each other?”

“How would we-”

You rushed towards him before he could finish his sentence.

The speed you used, caused your hood to fall, exposing your face.

The three are shocked, the sight of such a handsome maiden as yourself hugging, Merlin.

Gwaine and Percival could see it happening but Arthur, he’s going through a mental crisis.

You pull back and look over his figure, acting as though you're his mother. "Have you been eating? You look thinner."

He lightly shoves your hands off him, embarrassed at the sight.

“I can’t believe you were a dollop head and got caught.”

His jaw drops. “It wasn’t me.”

“Really? Who then?”

Gwaine snickers under his breath.

Percival smacks his shoulder, “we should really get a move on if we’re to make it back to Camelot by nightfall.”

Your gaze meets the tallest one’s. “Follow me, you’re nearly there.”

“Why should we trust you?” Arthur can’t help but ask.

“I am the one who rescued you before your knights could arrive.”

He pouts and stares at the ground.

You glance at Merlin who shakes his head with a smile. “Alright, now that we’ve had our temper tantrums, we can move on.”

The three share a look and smirk, wondering how you were going to deal with the future king once this was all over.

You pause in front of them.

Merlin takes a step forward, knowing you wouldn’t stop unless something was wrong.

The future king furrows his brows at your behavior. “What’s-”

You switch places with Arthur before he could blink.

They all rush forward, trying to get an eye on where you fell.

Your hand shoots up and Arthur is the first to grab it, followed by his knights who hook their hands under your arms to pull you up.

You huff before realizing you're laying on the future king’s chest.

His mouth opens and before any other thoughts could swirl around in his mind, you’re up and ready to continue.

“Are you sure you’re fine to continue?” Percival asks, the concern evident in his voice.

You brush him off, “I’m fine. We’re almost there.”

The five of you continue on your journey.

You stop before the entrance to Camelot. “This is where I leave you.”

“Wait- you’re leaving?” Merlin asks.

“Merlin, I can’t stay here-”

“Why not?” The prince asks. “Why can’t you?”

“Who’s going to help others who fall into the bandits' traps?”

“No one if you’re dead,” he points out the morbid fact you’ve thought about once or twice.

“I-” You take a deep breath, suddenly it hurts to stand up. You furrow your brows at the pain, realizing when it happened.

Merlin rushes towards you, knowing before you could lose your ability to keep upright. “Hey, hey. Where is it?” His hand soaked, filling him with fear and dread, “I need you to tell where-”

Your nails dig into his arm, your other hand wrapping around yourself.

“It hurts,” you whimper.

He nods, “I know but you need to stay awake.”

You nod, the urge to sleep overtaking your ability to think properly.

Arthur rushes to help him, asking Merlin to release you. “I got her.”

Percival and Gwaine open the doors, letting the blond rush through as they all head for Gaius.

“Ah Merlin just in-”

The older man’s eyes fall on your bleeding and unconscious form. “Set her down here.”

He reaches for bandages and applies pressure. “What happened?”

You open your eyes and wince at the light shining through and the fact that the pain of where the dagger hit you is.

Merlin enters, not realizing you have woken up and are actively trying to sneak out.

He turns, a smile breaking across his face until he realizes what you’re doing. “You should be resting.”

“I will be, when I’m gone.”

“You’re not leaving.”

“You were stabbed.”

“It’s just a flesh wound.”

“You could have died.”

“And I didn't, therefore I was destined to help you. Now, if I could-” You pause at the sound of the door creaking and find the- “your majesty,” you bow, sucking in your bottom lip to keep you from wincing.

“I’m pleased to see you’ve awake, I know Arthur will be happy to hear it.” Uther steps into the room, Gaius and Merlin make themselves scarce and work in the corner.

“I do have one question, why have you not returned home, princess?”

You lower your gaze, wondering how he knew.

“I’m happy to see my goddaughter is not dead,” he tells you with a smile.

You raise your head and force a smile, not wanting the people of Camelot to know what you’re feeling.

Arthur holds his hand out for you, “you didn’t tell me we knew each other.”

He pulls out the chair for you.

“I don’t like talking about it.”

He wants to ask why but his father interrupts by asking for a toast.

You hang by the door, wanting to leave and never return but knowing you’d leave friends behind hurt you, your chest aches at the thought.

The blond watches from afar, wondering what thoughts swirl around your mind.

He’s grown close to you within the last few months of you staying but still feels as though he can’t figure you out.

What type of pet would the Merlin characters have in a modern au?

OMG I LOVE THIS QUESTION 🤩 would you mind if I make this a long post with pictures and all?? I hope not because I will. let's go!!!

gwaine — i have this little headcanon of mine that modern gwaine spends a few years traveling around the world alone except for the company of a black cat he rescued in one of his early adventures. but in his childhood and teens I can definitely see him with a pet iguana.

merlin — merlin would also have cats. a cute calico he rescued and soon realized she was pregnant, and so he also has one of her kittens, an orange one. when gwaine comes back with his own cat and starts living with merlin, the three of them get along very well and become an inseparable trio. but for some reason I can also picture merlin having an borzoi dog as well as the cats. I don't know how friendly they are with cats though, and I see him more as a cat person, but I added a picture of the dog as a reference anyway (she matches with his first kitten because I love when animals match, you'll see). but to me he probably has the cats only. moving on....

gwen — gwen also has a cat. a pretty brown/white cat. however she also has a dalmatian. she got them both when they were very young, so the two of them are two beautiful ladies who get along with eachother perfectly. and the reason I gave her a dalmatian is simply because, and hear me out please: arwen 101 dalmatians au.

arthur — arthur is 100% a dog person to me. and I looooooove this little 101 dalmatians arwen au I have in my mind. they met just like in the movie, they were both walking their dogs and the dogs had them wrapped around their leashes. later arthur found out gwen was his sister's best friend who she was talking about ever since she came back to camelot (morgana lived somewhere else for a while, uni reasons, and also let's pretend camelot is a modern place too because I'm too tired to think of some alternative and I don't want to say london because that's lazy and a ridiculous cliché. anyway). boom. love at first sight, met cute, soulmates finding eachother with a little help of their dogs.

morgana — I'm not sure about her, actually. I have three options in my mind, so you can decide for yourself what you like best for her. I think she would have either two black sphinx cats, two black borzoi dogs or three black dobermans, cerberus kinda vibe. she's a baddie, her pets would be too

percival — I love the trope big muscular guy with tiny cute kitten. that's percy to me. I'm not sure about how many cats he would have, I can see him with only up to three, but idk. maybe he helped to rescue three little kittens that were abandoned somewhere and he kept them all because he is a gentle giant <3

lancelot — I can see him both as a dog and a cat person. maybe he has both cats and dogs, but idk.... I think he would have one or the other. however, if he had a dog it would be a brown labrador. idk why... I'm not 100% sure about him, but I think a labrador would fit him somehow.

leon — I see him having very knightly dog breeds, if that makes sense. dogs that still give off the "my owner is a knight" vibe. like either a scottish deerhound, an irish wolfhound or a greyhound.

elyan — a bernese!!! and a calico cat too, one of the kittens merlin's cat had :) elyan is that kind of person that is also traveling to many different places and he is very active even when he is at home. and to me, he fits a bernese perfectly. it's a cute dog, very very cute, but he is also big and active, he needs attention, space and a good routine, and elyan is a perfect owner for him imo. his cat loves to make company for him too, even if she is not as active as her little brother dog. she likes to walk around with him too.

mordred — a pair of bunnies :) he got one when he was a child and got used to them, so he doesn't see himself owning a dog or a cat now.

This is my first post(sorry had to point that out)

So I've recently joined the Merlin Fandom and have decided to ask about what's happening with the ships.

So like with every Fandom the MC is normally shipped with anybody and everybody but normally the ships have no way to actually work, but with Merlin you could ship him with practically everyone and it would work in canon because everyone has had a crush on him.

Arthur? Their infatuated with eachother

Gwaine? "Not Arthur" he's so FAITHFUL AND LOYAL AND IT HURTS

Lancelot? Obvious

Will? Childhood friends to lovers? Claiming he's the sorcerer instead of Merlin to protect him?

Morgana? GwEN? LEON? PERCIVAL? ELYAN?

EVERYONE FREAKING WORKS AND ITS SO CONFUSING

Mordred had a puppy crush on him (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called when you admire someone as greatly as Mordred admired Merlin) like there's no such thing as a rare pair in regards to Merlin because you could ship him with anyone above and almost everyone would be like "that works" or "okay" like obviously everyone has different tastes in ships and prefers a ship VS another ship but still (for example, I don't like morganaxmerlin or Mordredxmerlin)

As children, Arthur, Morgana, Gwen, Elyan, and Leon made vows to a creature named Kilgwan in the catacombs of Camelot.

Years later, on the even of Arthur's prospective betrothal, they are whisked away to make ammends for breaking them. Merlin and Gwaine must make up for the prince's sudden absence by disguising the latter as Arthur to court Princesses Mithian, Vivian, and Elena in his place, all while Merlin tries to find Arthur and his friends before any ill befalls them.

Amid this, Morgause schemes to kill the Pendragons and Merlin pines for his prince, convinced his love cannot be.

It takes very little for the delicate web of problems to fall into chaos.

Or: Merlin is sixteen when he comes to Camelot, vying for the new position of court sorcerer that has opened under King Arthur—a noble king, golden and lionhearted, who is trying to legalise magic in all of Albion. Of course, Merlin doesn't expect to be chosen.

But he is.

“The Sidhe thing didn’t count!” He declared, drawing all of the knights’ curious gazes like moths to flame.

“What Sidhe thing?” Gwaine asked. “Last I checked, you were very firmly not interested in that sort of thing, Highness.”

“The magic thing or the kissing other men thing?” Elyan asked for clarification.

“Either!” Arthur practically yelled.

“So what was the Sidhe thing?” Gwaine asked.

“A pair of Sidhe tried to drown him,” Merlin cut in, saving Arthur from further interrogation. “He was unconscious and I had to get air back into his lungs somehow!”

All the knights stared at him.

“You…kissed the king?” Percival asked faintly.

“No!”

“Kiss of life’s still a kiss Merls,” Gwaine grinned.

“Wait,” Lancelot looked confused. “Just how many royals have you kissed, Merlin?”
