We are working on value shifts with plane changes in Foundations of Watercolor and particularly working with cubes. This month we have all women in the class, so why not paint a favorite subject of most (if not all) women, a beautiful Tiffany blue gift box. Why, oh why, did I choose a gift box with a white ribbon??? In watercolor white is represented by the white of the paper, which is your lightest light. Everything else is painted darker and with other colors. So how do you paint a white ribbon with colors other than white and still have it read white?? Very carefully. First we choose subtle warm washes to depict white in warm light. Conversely we selected a variety of cool blues and violets to represent white in shadow. Then we darkened everything that was not white. I love the resulting painting. Grace Episcopal Church has a rich history and beautiful Carpenter Gothic architecture that is recognized by the City of Spring Hill as well as the National Register of Historic Places. Building started in 1875 after the McKissack family gave up their flower garden for what was then to be Grace Chapel. At that time Beechcroft was a dirt path. To this day, some of the original McKissack bulbs from the flower garden still come up- mostly lilies and peonies. It is believed that the chapel was called Grace because several of it's founding members had fought in the Civil War and "found grace" upon their return home. The Alter rail was carved by Tazewell Sidney Morton, who was a teacher at the Spring Hill Male College founded in 1881. The school later became Brigham and Hughes on the property of Ferguson Hall. It was carved out of a single tree from the Campbell/Ewell Farm at the end of Depot St. When one of two fires raged down the west side of Main St in the 1930s, the organist, Mrs Will Odil gave her daughter Ethel an ax and told her that if the church was threatened by the fire, she was to cut the alter rail out to save it. For most of its life, Grace left its doors open. That is until Mary Polk Mitchum (who used to prepare the communion) noticed that the communion wine was disappearing and that there would be a mess in the sacristy (the area where linens vestments are kept and where priests get vested). She sent her son Bud to the church one evening where he set up a trip wire with noisemakers in front of the steps to the alter. The thief arrived at the church, tripped the wires, and then Bud walked him south on Main St to McLemore Ave and City Hall- where there was also a jail cell. Creative Horizons Painting Class— Tag your 3 most creative friends. Beginning September 12 at 2pm, Spring Hill,TN Parks & Recreation will offer Creative Horizons painting class. This weekly class will focus on smaller, simpler paintings based on the national trend started back in 2004 by Duane Keiser, the father of "Daily Painting." We will paint for an hour a small (6 x 6 up to 10 x 10) painting with a simple subject comprised of basic shapes using my 5-Step process. It's light, colorful, fun, and stress-free. Perfect for advanced students wanting more painting time or beginner students who want to learn creating easier paintings of simpler subjects. It's called Daily Painting because the trend sparked a movement among artists who challenged their discipline by painting and completing one painting a day. Several websites popped up to host the onslaught of miniature paintings and galleries began hosting Six Squared and Miniature shows. People who would have never considered investing in original art found where they could love and afford these miniature beauties which are priced between $10 and $1500.
