On 4th December 1745 the Jacobite Army reached Derby, a town only 120 miles or so from London.
It was a long march under the leadership of Charles Edward Stuart - also known as 'The Young Pretender' or Bonnie Prince Charlie. The journey was part of their bid to reach London and overthrow the Hanoverian monarchy of George II.
Did the Bonnie Prince really believe he could take his troops all the way from the Highlands to the heart of the English capital in the snow? Apparently yes. He was nothing if not ambitious. Moreover, Highland soldiers were used to snow and to harsh conditions. Derby was really not all that far off the mark in terms of distance from London, either.
We do not know for sure how many men the Jacobite army consisted of by this stage. But the Prince's vanguard, when they reached Derby, requested billets for 9000 troops most sources however say there was between 4 and 5 thousand. . This must have seemed an enormous number for so small a town to sustain. Most of the local people in Altrincham or Derby, or any of the other towns along the way, would not have seen anything quite like it before. Nor ever would again.
Prince Charles' men were in the highest of spirits in Derby, with bells ringing out, bonfires blazing and men jovially queuing to get their swords sharpened, it must have been similar to the Tartan Army’s bi-annual  ventures to London, only the Jacobites would go no further south.
As the prodmanantly Scottish army bunkered down for the night news of the advance of the Jacobite march reached London and panic prevailed. Many of the inhabitants fled to the country, carrying along with them their most valuable effects, and that all the shops were shut, that there was a prodigious run upon the banks, who narrowly avoided going bust.
In preparation for the approaching rebels, an army began to gather on Finchley Common to defend London.
But, the Jacobite threat was already weakening, with talk among leaders of a retreat now circling. The march south had been met with a flattering response in many towns but the expected recruitment of new soldiers from the north of England had not delivered. Weapons and supplies sent from France had not arrived.
Lord George Murray, the senior Jacobite commander, urged a retreat. I shall return and take up the story in the next couple of days.
The painting depicts a scene in the winter of 1745 near Manchester, and is entitled 'The Pretender's Troops Entering Altrincham at Dawn, December 1745'. It is by Tom Colley.

Final concept and story
Navigating a war-devastated village in search of a coffee house. The coffee house, one of his most famous paintings, served as the inspiration for this concept. When Ratcliffe stopped for lunch at a coffee shop in neighboring Finchley, he discovered this to be an intriguing and complicated topic. He came back over a few days to sketch and collect data for the painting, which was finished at home.
The player then ventures out into the deserted town in search of the coffee shop while carrying the artwork of Ratcliffe. He sets out to locate this location out of sentimental interest.
Story –
The backdrop for the narrative was motivated by the fact that the majority of Ratcliffe's well-known paintings were produced in the years preceding World War 1. So I made the decision to make the location an abandoned, war-devastated town.
In order to locate the coffee shop shown in the artwork "the coffee house," the player decides to explore this town.
The player searches the town for the missing pieces of the painting that was damaged during the war in order to determine the precise appearance and location of the coffee shop.

Destination
There are several tourist destinations in Finchley. As a part of London, it receives thousands of local and international guests each year. One of the highlights of city tours is a visit at Stephens House and Gardens. It is an extensive landscaped garden that offers a refreshing break from the hustles of city life. For history enthusiasts, a visit at any of the museums around the borough is a must. Freud, Barnet, Bruce Castle, and the Jewish Museums display artifacts and souvenirs of the past. They give you a brief yet very educational encounter of the early times of United Kingdom and its people.

WHERE TO GO ICE SKATING IN LONDON
Skate at Somerset House 14 November-13 January The popular Skate at Somerset House with Fortnum and Mason is back with an impressive 40ft Christmas tree, the Skate Lates live music nights, and Après-skate treats like mulled wine and mince pies or champagne and chocolate fondue at Fortnum’s Lodge. Fortnum’s Christmas Arcade also returns, transforming the West Wing at Somerset House into a festive shopping destination. Tickets from £11. Open from 8.45am-11.15pm for one-hour skate sessions (earliest and latest session available on selected dates only). Read more here
Ice skating is a favorite hobby of Londoners. Flashback in the 1920’s, it was a sensational activity for many Londoners. But even before that, several paintings show the interest of people to ice skating. This Christmas, the list of ice rinks continues to increase to provide people more enjoyment and relaxation. Compared with the ice rinks of the past centuries, modern-day structures have add-ons to maximize your every visit. Visitors can choose from the wide selection of Instagram-worthy view like in Tower of London or National History Museum. Once you get tired, there are also café and restaurants offering hot drinks and festive food. All these additional offerings make the ice rink a one-stop destination for ice skaters.
British Museum in Finchley London
The British Museum has one of the largest collections of valuable works showcasing the history of Britain and humans in general. It opened in 1753 as a “universal museum” and since then, it continued to add more to its collection to become one of the largest museums in the world. It has over 100 galleries housing the memorabilia of Britain and other parts of the world. It is subdivided into departments to display some valuable objects from different countries. Aside from an educational historic visit, there are also interactive activities for the whole family. Digital workshops, art sessions and comic making are just some of the age-specific programs for kids of all ages.

Research for project 3
I found there is an artist called Alessio Albi who uses natural light to capture the image. As the article described, “ Alessio Albi captures incredible, emotionally charged portraits using nothing more than natural light and the environment around his home city of Perugia, Italy.A nutritionist by profession, photographer by passion, Albi’s work often features female subjects, whose contemplative glares, combined with natural, but cinematic light create beautiful, but at times unsettling portraits.” In the interview with Andrew Gibson, Albi says “I love natural light because it creates amazing shapes and volumes that I can’t obtain with artificial light […] I could spend an entire day waiting for that precise ray of light coming through my window and shoot hundreds of photos only with this light source, because I love the way it interacts with the human body. I also love cloudy days for my outside shooting, because clouds create the perfect light diffuser and add lot of atmosphere to pictures”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the natural light we can see how the images combine with the environment . Like the second image, we can feel the isolation and lonely. When natural light comes through doors and windows, it can create a romantic feeling to the picture the photographer takes. This effect isn’t as easy to achieve when artificial lights are used. Also the big contrast in the first image, the dark room and the lighting window.
Tumblr media
Artist: Adam Chodzko
As the article described “Better Scenery is an artwork made up of four components, two photographs and two site-specificsculptures. It was commissioned by Camden Arts Centre, London. The sculptures are large signs, one located in North London, the other in the Painted Desert, Arizona. The photographs, each depicting one of the signs in situ, are displayed as a diptych. In the photograph on the left the sign is set within the O2 shopping and leisure centre’s busy car park off London’s Finchley Road. The photograph depicts a dark, built-up environment beneath an overcast sky. A few trees, shopping trolleys and lampposts are scattered among the many cars in the foreground. In the background the blur of a moving underground train is visible in front of a large Victorian red-brick building. In the photograph on the right the sign stands out against a vast blue sky in a landscape of grasses and yellow flowered brush receding to a flat horizon echoed by a line of mountains behind. A dark sandy hill rises at the left edge of the image. Each sign is a large black rectangle with yellow text that gives detailed road directions in simple language. Both signs are fixed in the ground by two timbers with a wind chime fixed to the top of the left strut. The sign in North London gives directions from Flagstaff, Arizona, to the specific location of the sign in the desert which, in turn, gives directions from Central London to the location of the sign at the O2 carpark. The final sentence of both signs is ‘Situated here, in this place, is a sign which describes the location of this sign you have just finished reading.”.
From this diptych we can see there is a sign both appears in two different location, one represents the urban life and the other one reflects the life of dessert. It makes a huge contrast in order to show us the two different world. It has many different observations in the diptych. Can be seem as a reminder of environment protection, can be seem as two kinds of feeling. The most important thing is the artist used the same stuff in two different location, then the contrast came out by itself.

Dark colours make such a great backdrop for lots of different textures and colours
Michele Birch knows the exact photo prints moment she became a full-blown dark interiors addict. “I went on a course held at interior designer Abigail Ahern’s house in London two years ago. As soon as I walked through the door I thought, wow, this is so dramatic,” says Michele. “Before that I’d only done the odd dark wall here and there, but it gave me a massive push to go further.”
Buoyed on by a like-minded group of Instagrammers, Michele started covering the walls, floors and ceilings of her four-bedroom Victorian terrace in Wallasey, Merseyside, with black, brown and grey paint shades – her favourites being Farrow & Ball’s Railings, Down Pipe and Off Black, as well as Abigail Ahern’s Crosby.
“Dark colours make such a great backdrop for lots of different textures and colours, such as the coloured glass I collect from charity shops or the Sue Timney wall hanging in my living room,” she explains.
One of the few areas to escape the dark treatment is Michele’s meditation room. Formerly the smallest bedroom, it’s now the domain of Michele’s husband John, a practising Buddhist who teaches meditation. He appreciates a calm space to counterbalance his hectic job as an electrical engineer. “He’d probably prefer an all-white house,” admits Michele. “But luckily he’s very easy going and let’s me do what I want with the decor.”
The house has been continuously re-decorated since Michele inherited it from her aunt 24 years ago, even though she only intended to live there for six months as a stop-gap after graduating.
As a fashion student at the University of Central Lancashire in the early 1990s, she always imagined she’d end up in London instead. “I’d worked at M&S in Liverpool for six years before going to university, then designed sportswear for Pineapple on my work placement and had a great time living in Finchley,” says Michele, who met her first husband, a graphic designer, while studying. “But when I got pregnant with my son, Redd, we decided to stay in Liverpool.”
Even in her 20s, Michele’s eclectic taste veered towards dark colours. “My style was very 1950s-inspired, with fitted suits and big hair rolls,” she says. “I loved the bold designs of Biba and Barbara Hulanicki, whose wallpaper I’ve now got in the hall and back room.”
Motherhood put Michele’s career on the back burner, but now she now works as an art technician at a local grammar school, teaches dressmaking in her spare time and sells handmade felt cushions under the name Shell Birch Textiles.
“Over the years I’ve become more interested in interiors than fashion,” she says. “I love books by the likes of Hans Blomquist and I love homeware shops like Rockett St George, Beetle & Wilde and Curious Egg. Travelling always inspires me, too, whether it’s the architecture in Copenhagen or staying at an old riad in Marrakech and visiting the beautiful Majorelle Garden.”
The house has been subject to various alterations – including knocking the breakfast room through to the kitchen – many of the original features are intact from when Michele’s aunt’s father-in-law, a printmaker, bought the house new in 1904. These include doors, architraves, floorboards and a very steep staircase.
They’ve also kept the blue 1960s bathroom suite that Michele remembers from her childhood visits. “I love the huge cast iron bath and can’t imagine ever replacing the suite with a modern white one, even though the basin’s cracked,” she says.

14 yr old Burngreave Slovak boy breaks in..
quote - jacket I washed two days ago disappeared, plus other items
sound over- it was Alex' s 14 year old son robbed it../? I thought it was the 16 yr old who stole my new grey socks I had just bought-- and so much more, from down Barnsley rd- they have everything of mine from my kettle onwards....but no, another young slovak thief come to settle in England.... Naima of the lab st barths Human Research rang Kevin /Horwarth/ of Oswestry Str corner..thief beyond compare, and rapist, watches my home constantly.
His parents were in, so he rang a friend and as their window looks out onto my home, he told him when I had gone to Firth park Sheffield shops.. I have not yet checked all that the younger boy robbed..paints, teeshirt
quote at lab st barths human research, new lot of Allan's 86 illeg kids in lab. tell them what you want and the rest is up to them.
..THE MINISTRY MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE LAB ST BARTHS HUMAN RESEARCH TO ENSURE NO MORE ROBBERIES HAPPENED HAD GONE HOME. JOHN TURNBULL TOLD HIM HE WOULD COVER FOR HIM!!!!!! AND SO ANOTHER ROBBERY...
- of St barths\ human Research- for FIONA TURNBULL half sister of John Turnbull, ''I wanted to show my friends what I could do... and I wanted to rob Fekete's small book of designs-Fekete's door was opened remote by Joanna, granddaughter of Harold Mankovitz from one of his illegitimates children--/former doctor of Middlesex/ of Finchley, father of 92 illeg children created by former bossess of St Barths Anna and also 10 of his own illeg kids..They use a superstrong X-ray on the coordinates.
The thief's cancer will have been activated- depends on how high his count is how soon he succumbs.. This particular special Cancer Wards remote program paid for by Kissinger, is based on theft, because Anna had been a kleptomaniac from young and had been in prison for theft, it covers her own robbing me from the beginning, some of my things were still in her bedroom when she died a few weeks ago..The beginning was my GP Leech of Scunthorpe, worried I might report him to the medical council, asked Anna and her group to 'watch' me. This group had long been ''messing and tinkering'' in the population as well as with little patients, hence Americans came over here to St barths as over there, they had capital punishment and went to jail for tortures which were normal in England. They then put theft and crime onto a covert program level paid for by Kissinger for the future of USA logistics.
quote Anna- they steal, so they have to expect it, if they are not openly punished. All new to this country will be used for the tests. At this moment a dozen or so of Allan Lieberman Cross's 86 created illeg kids is in the lab torturing and killing - with friends and family, by remote.
Anyone who is in NHS patient, can be used by remote by St barths human research experiments.. if they get cancer, they get NHS care../quote from Denis senior Civil Servant, Health Ministry

Brainstorming ideas for the game
I didn't plan to build an action-based game, but the aesthetic of the artist's works encouraged me to make a drama/adventure game.
Idea 1: A point-and-click adventure
The player is in the town looking for something or a certain location.
Idea 2: Navigating a war-devastated village in search of a coffee house.
