Painswick Church Clipping
Tumblr media
Source: Alamy Stock Photos
On the Sunday closest to today, at Painswick in Gloucestershire, church clipping takes place. After a procession, the parishioners join hands and encircle St Mary’s Church. A Clipping Hymn is sung and a Clipping Sermon is delivered. The whole business has a decidedly pre-Christian feel and is rumoured to have its origins in an ancient Roman custom in which worshippers would dance around a sacred altar prior to a sacrifice of cats and dogs. What sounds like folklorists’ over-imagination does have some possible validation by the fact a local delicacy served on the day is called Puppy-dog Pie, a round cake in which a china dog is placed, allegedly based on the fact the sacrificed dogs were eaten by the worshippers after their dance. A more prosaic, if no less unsettling, origin is also told in which it is claimed two travellers wanting dinner at the Painswick Inn were given dog pie by the landlord who had no food available and so he served up his own faithful hound to his hungry guests. Although neither account sounds particularly believable, the practice of church clipping is genuinely mysterious and a pagan origin to the ceremonies is entirely possible.

I think we all firmly believe that Rosamond and Cora are best friends, but in season one Cora spends a good minute calling Rosamond cheap and telling Robert that his sister didnt want to see him but that she came for free food💀

Since my week is filling up and I honestly keep forgetting which day it is, I'm going to do another day early post, just to make sure I don't forget tomorrow.
Not a hugely exciting scene, and quite short, but necessary for set up and once the whole thing is up will be kinda vital for pacing...
Week after next we'll finally make it to Stockport. Promise!

Poor or Perfect - Chapter 1 - Lady_Lioness - Downton Abbey [Archive of Our Own]
Summary:
Poor Edith, one of the more unfortunate characters in the entirety of Downton Abbey’s nobility. No one favored the ugly, jealous sister who almost always remained abandoned and alone. She certainly hadn’t thought much of her when watching the show.
But now she’s here, stuck in the body of the middle Crawley sister. No friends, no gifts, no beauty, but can she somehow manage to change the story? Protect those she loves and become more than Poor Edith? Just maybe, she can become the Perfect Edith for Downton Abbey.

DOWNTOWN ABBEY HEADCANON
Rosamund got pregnant for the first and only time in her life in late 1891; sadly the child, a girl, was born dead.
Three days later, her niece Edith was born.

Chapter 42
Not much to say about this newest chapter of My dearest Darling (ao3 here) other than that it's on the heavier side once again. And it is not Cobert suffering for a change.
Rosamund quickly looked away again, a blush creeping up on her cheeks. Her dazed gaze followed a bird flying past the window front at that moment. She followed it with almost yearning eyes and watched it fly away into the afternoon sky.
After a while, the bird had long since been gone, she said: "What if I am?"
Mary had already suspected her aunt was lonely, living all on her own in this grand house with nobody but the servants around, that was why she had even posed that question. Hearing her admit to it, though, made the younger woman's stomach drop.
Gently and even more tentatively, Mary replied: "You know, once upon a time I said that I envied you. Living all alone in a great house like this one with plenty of money to spend, back then that sounded like paradise to me. But now I realise that I don't think I have ever been more wrong about anything in my entire life."
Her aunt looked at her again, saw the sadness and pity in the younger woman's eyes, and she also thought she saw her own sorrows reflected in their brown depths for a second.
"It is not so bad as long as one has something to do; and you and everyone else came to visit often enough throughout the years to make me feel less alone," Rosamund said, refilling her glass of whiskey and offering Mary some as well. When her niece shook her head no, she set the decanter down on the table and took a big sip. "But recently it has got a bit harder, I'll admit it."
