Augusnippets Day 18: Apocalypse
Human Resistance Masterlist
Augusnippets Masterlist
tw: apocalypse, mind control
It was a quiet sort of apocalypse.
Zach, Jesse, and Sky picked their way through overgrown lots to reach what used to be a big box store. It was far enough away from any of the aliens' strongholds to be left untouched and relatively safe, but it was still risky to be anywhere near former human civilization. All it really took was one unlucky run-in with a patrol, even for survivors as experienced as Zach's crew.
They wouldn't be out here if it weren't necessary. Their base was running low on many critical supplies, and the store was likely untouched. It would have non-perishable food, clothing, and medicine in abundance, well worth the risk. Zach's crew was traveling light, only carrying the absolute essentials, in the hopes of filling their empty packs and carrying back as much as possible.
It was the silence that really got to Zach. He'd grown up loving zombie movies, the gorier the better, and he'd envisioned the apocalypse as noisy chaos. Stores looted, buildings burned and trashed, roving gangs mowing down hordes of zombies. Instead, it was peaceful. Nearly every building was left entirely intact, looking as if it could open for normal business at any moment, and the only sound was birdsong.
The silence and peace was a chilling reminder of how the aliens liked to operate. They didn't come to kill the Earthlings with advanced weaponry. No, they conquered humanity swiftly and effortlessly using little more than their psychic powers to subjugate everyone they came into contact with. Cities didn't fall -- they had their populations spirited away in minutes, crowds of dazed, sleepwalking humans herding themselves into alien ships, leaving behind everything with no hesitation.
Zach swept the area near the store with his modified heat sensor. "Coast is clear."
The automatic doors opened for them when they approached -- the aliens had also kept the power running in most populated areas. Cheerful signs informed them of a 20% off clothing sale and new toys for summer fun. Apart from the complete lack of people, the only real indication that anything was wrong was the shopping carts that had been left all around the aisles.
The three split up wordlessly. Zach headed right for the first aid section and began filling his backpack with bandages, painkillers, antibiotic cream, and any other medicine that seemed useful. He'd moved on to the soap aisle when he heard the unmistakable sound of the automatic doors opening.
Shit. There were only a couple of things this could be -- one of his two companions had broken protocol; there was another unknown group of human survivors, possibly hostile; or -- most likely -- it was an alien patrol. Zach crouched down, making as little sound as possible while going over the escape routes in his head.
Footsteps were drawing nearer. They sounded human. Zach dared to glance around the aisle, and was surprised by what he saw.
It was a group of aliens with humans alongside them. The aliens were little more than masses of gray tentacles, pulling themselves across the linoleum. The humans were all wearing the uniforms, collars, and blissful expressions typical of those who had been enslaved. They were in the clothing department, and the humans seemed to be talking and laughing among themselves, picking out clothes and holding them up.
What were they doing? He'd never seen this sort of thing happen before.
Some of the aliens' tentacles had huge, bright eyes with colorful rainbow swirls in them. These were their primary weapons, capable of snaring a human mind in an instant. As one of the aliens looked around the store, Zach averted his gaze. Even at this distance, it was dangerous to even glance at their eyes, unless he wanted to be turned into one of their zombies.
All it took was just one look. One look, and there wouldn't be any more missions to raid old stores just to survive. No more thin rations and hiding in caves, no more sneaking through the remains of ordinary civilization. It'd be over, and he'd be rendered mindless and turned into one of their slaves.
One look, and he could rest.
He shook the idea from his mind. His resistance group was counting on him as their leader. He couldn't afford to entertain thoughts like that, no matter how fleeting. He had to finish gathering supplies and escape.
Thankfully, this wasn't a patrol out looking for human resistance, but a group with some different mission. The aliens were slowly remaking the remains of human civilization to their liking -- they were probably here to survey the shops and roads, not to fight. He'd had enough practice in stealth that he could slip through the aisles and back to the entrance without attracting their attention.
But then he heard a crash from the back of the store.
It wasn't that loud, probably just a few things knocked off a shelf, but in the desolate store, it echoed off the tiles. The group of aliens absolutely heard it, because their tentacles went from looking relaxed to being on high alert.
Zach swore under his breath. What a fucking mistake to make. Maybe his teammates hadn't heard the doors open or spotted the threat, maybe they'd just been careless or unlucky, but regardless, this was going to make their escape a whole lot more difficult.
He slipped back into the aisles. He could still evade them, he could still make it out. The problem was that he was just so fucking tired. Tired of having to fight for his life and autonomy just to go to a goddamn Target and get some food and medicine. Tired of wondering if this is the day when it'd all be over.
He was just so tired.
He jerked his head up, opening his eyes. There must be an alien nearby, subtly influencing his thoughts. That's one of the ways they got you, distracting and luring you with thoughts of things you wanted -- in his case, a good night's sleep.
So at least one alien had sensed his mind, but it probably still didn't know exactly where he was. He could use that to his advantage as long as --
Something slimy gripped his ankle, and a wave of drowsy stillness washed over him, a deep compulsion to relax and not resist.
He knew what he was supposed to do. Screw up his defiance, remember his training, ignore the alien thoughts, escape.
Sometimes he wished he could just give up and let it all be over with.
Zach realized his mistake as soon as the alien presence amplified that thought, flooding him with the deep, irresistible desire to give up, to let go, to feel the deep relief of knowing that the worst was over with. He couldn't fight it, not when he was already so weary. And so when the hypnotic eye blossomed before his face, filling his mind with mesmerizing color, all he could do was let go.

'Painkiller' vs. 'Dopesick': Which Series Tackles the Opioid Crisis Better?"
Painkiller is a show with a story that we have all heard before. Perhaps we have not heard the exact story of Purdue Pharma but we have heard about opiod addiction and those responsible for it.
Painkiller is the second attempt at this story. Dopesick did it first and frankly did it better. That does not make Painkiller a bad show. It is very informative, and the cast is very good, but Dopesick got to these dramatic beats first and handled them in a more resonating way.
Both series feature the Sackler family as they were the real-life family at the center of the crisis. Richard Sackler, to be precise, was the president of Purdue Pharma and the main push behind OxyContin. Played in Painkiller by Matthew Broderick and in Dopesick by Michael Stuhlbarg. It is Broderick who gets that edge simply because they explored the more sublte nuances, and the visions of his egomaniac uncle Arthur, played by Clark Gregg, helped heigten the performance.
As far as the rest of the story, Dopesick handled that better. In Dopesick, you have a young girl who receives an injury at a mine. Kaitlyn Dever is phenomenal in that role, and Michael Keaton starred as a doctor who himself got addicted to OxyContin. Keaton as Dr. Finnix had much more of a plot than any one doctor did in Painkiller. In Painkiller, they presented the doctors as easy to manipulate by the seduction and enticing of the beautiful young women who made up Purdue's sales force.
Both featured real-life prosecutor storylines, and Dopesick handled that much better as well. Dopesick was much better thought out as an individual story while tackling the larger issue with the Sacklers. Painkiller tried to rely on more striking visuals and less development pertaining to the characters that made up the overall narrative. The Sackler family is one component of the story. While Broderick turned in a great and memorable performance, the rest of the cast of Painkiller felt forgotten, and that is due in large part to Dopesick telling this story so well.
The real tragedy here was and still remains the staggering number of people who are addicted to prescription painkiller medicines. Purdue Pharma is one instance of big pharma greed, but we need more education on addiction itself. Both shows were not afraid to show you how bad it was on the streets and just how addictive OxyContin is. As it is referred to in the series, it was like selling "Heroine in a pill form" and the real sadness stems from the fact so many deaths went ignored so one family could line their pockets.

taus /toz/ [toz] - rate, speed, the rapidity at which some process takes place; - value, worth, the quality which renders someone or something desirable or valuable; - (rare) price, cost, the monetary quantity needed to pruchase an item
Etymology: from Old Boral taus "tax, price", deverbal of taussar "to impose a tax on" borrowed from Old French and reflecting Latin taxō "I handle, charge, appraise, reckon" (compare modern French taux "level, amount, quantity" with an etymological respelling).

The first major section of this work will cover those hebetant substances [painkillers] which have come out of workshops globally over the last two decades. The sterling example is undoubtedly cozebdone-diamaschal benjamine (CD) [1], sold under various names and perhaps most familiar to Markland as the coveted 'Tommy pills', is a product of collaboration between the Branwen Sanatory in New Leudong and the University of Rimack in Tavance [2] to find hebetants with faster action and fewer adversions.
Comprising (as the longform name implies) branches of cozebdone oil and maschal [3] in opposed position, the substance was first synthesised in 1932 and has already surpassed salix-derivative pills [4] in annual sales everywhere from Sangathy to Adighe [5]. This is due to the former's greater efficacy in relieving pain, which finds it more widely used than the previous bevy of remedies which may merely help to reduce symptoms of fever.
In sufficiently high concentrations CD has also been demonstrated to function in unguento, although the inefficiency and commodity of this…

I am not unaware of the risks of addiction or the pains of addiction. Take off your "I'm-so-clever-for-considering-this-detail" hat and realize the point: that the person who should be weighing the risks and making the decision should be the person who is dealing with the pain.
The Doctor doesn't gain anything by not prescribing you medicine? Do you think they get a kickback for each script? They get fancy dinners and such, but they don't get percentage of the sales.
Most importantly, if they decide someone with chronic pain doesn't need meds, they are not the one having to shoulder that pain.
Doctors are trained in medicine. That gives them knowledge about health, not the ability to determine who really does and does not really feel pain.
Free access to unlimited painkillers also tends to mask the actual disease
This applies to all diseases that cause any amount of pain, and all painkillers including over the counter ones. It's also pointless, because sometimes there isn't a solution to the problem because the problem is chronic pain and the solution is medication that takes away that pain. "Pain is a symptom of the disease" doesn't help if your doctor has decided you're not deserving of care, of which painkillers are a part.
A proper system of care for people isn't a doctor eyeballing them to see if they're one of the deserving patients or just a future sad story of addiction. It's explaining the risks and side effects of medication alongside the uses, so that the patient can decide whether the pain is bad enough to warrant the risk, because anyone else making that decision will not have to live with that decision.
De-addiction therapy is not 100% effective. Not even close. Needle exchange programmes don't do shit for the actual addiction.
Horrific pain is 100% effective at being horrifically painful.
Needle exchanges aren't meant to be addiction reduction, they're meant to be harm reduction, to prevent the spread of bloodborne disease. Except they also give a gathering place for addicts, making it all the easier for them to also access addiction treatment and medical care.
It is actually way better for 100 addicts to get their fix on pain pills than a single person in pain go without. I call this the "Torture is bad" principle. You should be able to get the good stuff forever after a single doctor's visit. If you're worried about addicts fund rehab centers and needle exchanges instead of torturing people.

Revealing America's "Biggest Scam" - Good Medicine or Poison?
In 2021, the American drama "Dopesick" was released, which exposed the largest medical scam in American history, using the opioid painkiller Osconazole as the starting point. Its ultimate goal was to uncover a shocking scam jointly developed by chaebols, pharmaceutical companies, and the US Food and Drug Administration.
In 1986, the Sackler family planned to monopolize all painkillers in the market and quickly make money by using the highly profitable new opioid drug Osconazole, owned by Purdue Pharmaceutical Company, in response to financial crises. To achieve this goal, the Sackler family arranged for Purdue Pharmaceuticals to set up a meticulous scam. Firstly, they fabricated a lie claiming that only 1%of people are addicted to Osconazole, in order to enhance its safety. Secondly, they bribed the US Food and Drug Administration to obtain the drug label for Osconazole, which is not easily addictive. Subsequently, they hired a large number of sales elites and used methods such as event funding, gift rebates, and bribes to deceive doctors and make them prescribe Osconazole to patients.
Under the promotion strategy that focuses on human weaknesses,Oshkanding has achieved good sales. Overnight, the market forpainkillers was dominated by Osconazole. At the same time, the side effects brought by Oshcantine also began to manifest. The efficacy of Oshkandin is not long-lasting, and if you want to continue torelieve pain after the time limit has passed, you can only increase the dosage. The consequences of continuous escalation can lead to addiction and trigger various human tragedies.
The girl Becky in the drama is the victim of Oshkandin. She is a miner in a small town. While working underground, she accidentally bumped into her and injured her back. She went to the clinic to see a doctor, and the doctor prescribed Osconazole to relieve her pain. However, after taking an increased dose of Oshcantine for a few days, Becky began to become addicted to drugs and her mental state changed. She even suffered another injury in the mine due to seeing hallucinations.
In this scam, even doctors inevitably became victims. Doctor Finnicks, who was treating Becky, also started taking Osconazole and became addicted due to a car accident. At first, he hoarded Osconazole by reducing the number of medications prescribed to patients. Later, it was decided to reduce dependence by using drugs. In the end, he became addicted to drugs and drugs, turning him into a monster.
What's scary is that Becky and Finnicks are not isolated cases. With the popularity of Osconazole, many people have developed symptoms of drug addiction, and some even use it directly as a drug. There have also been incidents of looting and even theft of Oshkandin in pharmacies. In this way, the once peaceful town in the drama, with a series of violent and theft incidents, has become an evil crime capital.
Once upon a time, people hailed Oshkandin as a revolutionary method for treating chronic pain. This drug has become one of the largest blockbusters in pharmaceutical history, generating approximately $35 billion in revenue. However, over 500000 Americans have died from excessive use of opioids so far, exceeding the total number of deaths in all wars in the United States since World War II. The Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy in the United States has said, "It's hard to accept that every five minutes, one person in the United States loses their life due to overdose."

The Shroom Baggies are also obtainable through your Drug Dealer NPC, and there are no skill requirements needed to obtain the consumable shroom baggies.

In the case that your sim who owns the Illegal racket does not assign anyone to inheret the rackets. The Rackets will first be handed to a child of the sim. If no children are present, then a sibling. If No siblings are present, then a parent. Otherwise, the racket will be lost upon death.

Previously, the time it took for Cocaine Brick and Meth Package to be completed in their respective containers was not a tunable. The time it takes is now tunable. By default, it takes 48 hours for a Cocaine Brick and Meth Package to be collected in their respective containers after filling it up.
-Drug Dealing Skill Points earned per Sale
You will be able to dictate just how much skill points your sim earns per type of drug sold. By Default selling Cannabis, Psychedelic, Pill, and Powdered type drugs net you 100 skillpoints. Which is a bit of a grind. For example at the moment during my playthrough I sold 139 drugs and I just got to Drug Dealing Skill level 5.
[Animation Attempt]
There was an attempt during the month to at least produce one consumption animation for this month. However, the prop refused to appear in the correct location. I'm still unsure what went wrong, but I will continue to look into it. The attempt was made for the drink Lean animation.
[Changes/Fixes Made During Testing]
I decided to perform a playthrough with my mod. To determine if I should make any changes or if there are any bugs that need fixing. Which there were a few I found.
-Fixed Bug Preventing my custom plants from growing overtime.
-Fixed a Bug Preventing the heat system from saving after reloading a save:
Example, my sim had a heat level of 15. Making him eligible to potentially have his residence raided. However, when I reloaded my save after saving. My sims heat level went back down to 0. This is resolved and heat level will be retained even after reloading a save.
-Fixed Empty Jars having a black substance inside of them:
This was a problem I had in the past, but didn't decide to expirement to try to fix it until it started to bother me in my playthrough. The black substance only appeared after you collected your cured cannabis. However, the empty jars are now truly empty.
-Made a adjustment to crafting drugs via the Chemistry Table:
Previously when processing Coke Powder, Meth Tray, Heroin, and MDMA there were no Drug Dealing Skill Requirements. I decided to go back and add a Drug Dealing Skill requirement in order to produce these drugs via the Chemistry Table. Especially for Meth. Since all the ingredients to produce meth is obtainable through the grocery store. Which will make it too easy I thought. So now on top of the logic skills required to produce these substances. MDMA production will require a Drug Dealing Skill of 4, Cocaine/Meth Production will require a Drug Dealing Skill of 5 Heroin production will require a Drug Dealing Skill of 7. Cannabis and Shrooms still do not require a drug dealing skill. Just the necessary ingredients for now.
And that is all I have to report on for this month. We went over creating a Shroom harvestable, Racket Inheritance, Crafting Lean, Obtaining Drug Seeds Illegally, Cutting High Quality Cocaine with baby laxatives, Adding more tunables, and making adjustments and fixing bugs found during my playthrough.
I had fun testing the early game of my mod. I managed to make it to drug dealing skill level 5 and was satisfied with the early game of the mod. I will continue to test my playthrough and attempt to make it to the late game of my mod. Where I will be attempting to own my own rackets and ensure that they work just perfectly. If all is well during my playthrough then everything is complete regarding my Drug Dealing side of the mod. And all that would be left are the final touches of the consumption of these substances. Which will include consumption Animations, reactions of nearby sims when smoking, and a rolling skill for joints and blunts, and possibly anything else that I may think of later on.
Now I'm going to go back to being a ghost. However, again thank you for all those that are patient.

Disposable segment accounted for the largest share of the acupuncture needles market, by type
The market is divided into disposable and non-disposable needles based on kind. The market has a bigger percentage of disposable needles. The danger of disease transmission will be reduced by the use of disposable needles.
The non-disposable needles category is expected to increase at a modest rate in the acupuncture needles market throughout the forecast period. I feel a need to add that in the UK most shops will only sell you two packets of any painkiller in a single transaction and it is actually illegal to sell more than one hundred of any medicated tablet in a single transaction.
When I worked retail I had to count up how allergy tablets people were buying because if they were after more than a hundred I could get in legal trouble for putting the sale through. Ibuprofen was among a short list of medicines that flagged up a warning on the till telling me not to sell more than two packets to the same person.
We were supposed to try and keep track of people buying them too regularly and refuse to sell them but nobody actually did this.
wait americans can just. buy massive bottles of ibuprofen what the fuck
