LMAOOOOO THE FISH SUIT. I completely forgot about the fish suit ahshajdhsskahsa. This was absolutely a prank that some Yozakura ancestor pulled on their oldest sibling that kept getting passed down as a "tradition", and Kyoichiro clearly fell for it.
That said, there's good reason to be wearing a sea bream costume at a wedding reception. "Sea bream" is the common name for pagrus major, a type of saltwater fish that makes up a huge part of Japan's culinary culture. Sea breams (specifically red sea breams) represent abundance and good fortune, and it's common practice for sumo wrestlers to pose for photos with a red sea bream in their hands after winning a match (no joke!). So it's not like the choice in costume is some random fish—there is a cultural aspect to it, which I suspect is why Kyoichiro happily continued the tradition.
(I still maintain that this was started as a joke that just went on for way too long—it has "silly joke turned actual custom" written all over it lmao.)

The Common seabream (Pagrus pagrus) is a popular fish for recreational but also commercial fishing. 🐟 They start their life as females and later change sex to male. They can grow up to 75cm. We find them normally close to the seabed searching for crustaceans, molluscs and small fish to feed on.

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #158
Brought to you by a marine biologist and deja vu...
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
I have some sources that claim today’s fish - the Red Sea Bream - is just the same as the Red Snapper we have covered already. The fish sure do look the same, being a stocky, red-colored fish in the AC series. However, just because fish look the same, doesn’t mean much. IRL, these are completely different species, so, no, not deja vu.
Tumblr media
The Red Sea Bream was available in Pocket Camp for the Fishing Tourney #37 in April of 2021. It was available as part of a “sakura” theme, so all the fish involved were pink. This checks out, since irl, the Red Sea Bream is more of a pinkish color than full-on red.
The common name “red sea bream” actually applies to two fish, but thankfully both of them belong to the same Family, which is Sparidae. These fish are often known as porgies or sea breams, and they are typically laterally-compressed fish with deep bodies. They are also pretty delicious, and many species support fisheries around the world. The name red sea bream, as stated, applies to two species, but I’m willing to bet the one Animal Crossing was inspired by was Pagrus major, or madai, the species native to Japanese and Chinese waters.
Tumblr media
Madai is considered a luxury food in Japan, so explains why it appears in the game. (As you can tell, seafood is really important to Japan). In fact, madai is often specially prepared for important events or holidays, such as weddings or the Japanese New Year. Just like anything considered top-notch cuisine, there are a ton of ways to cook it...or not. This fish is readily served raw in sushi and as sashimi.
Now, I just love it when AC picks fish for their events that actually correspond with the seasonality of the fish. Madai actually do move into shallower water during the Spring when they spawn, so having them in Pocket Camp in April was a good call. Madai also really don’t care much about where they live, having been found to live on hard bottoms, like rocks and reefs, as much as soft bottoms, like sand and mud. Only their juveniles seem to be hard-wired to seek out stable environments until they are 30 days old when they promptly stop caring where they live. Strange? Maybe. But since madai are doing well despite supporting lucrative fisheries, perhaps their lack of habitat preference helps them to spread their numbers anywhere.
And there you have it. Fascinating stuff, no?

Concept: a woman is holding hands with a robot, and the woman is wearing a shirt that says "I like my women like I like my keyboards" on the front and "mechanical" on the back, over an exploded view of a cherry mx brown keyswitch.
The robot's shirt says "flesh lover" in the old recaptcha distorted text style. The back has "select all the squares with the cutest girl" and a 3x3 montage of photos of the woman currently holding her right hand.

Presence Confirmation of Non-Native Species Pagrus major (Temminck And Schlegel, 1843) in the Eastern Mediterranean
Abstract
Four specimens of red seabream Pagrus major (non-native species), were caught at the entrance of Amvrakikos Gulf and Echinades islands of the Ionian Sea (Western Greece). Identification was confirmed by genetics. Location and morphological characteristics as well as stomach content analysis and a brief history of farming attempts in the Mediterranean are presented.
