"Two Years in Prison Penalty For Bigamy," Hamilton Spectator. October 9, 1943. Page 7. --- Ancaster Man Convicted and Sentenced in Magistrate's Court This Morning ---- On a charge of bigamy, Earnest Smith, 34, of Ancaster, a labourer, was sentenced to two years in Kingston penitentiary by Magistrate James McKay in magistrate's court this morning. In June of 1932, in Chatham, Ont., Smith was first married. He deserted his wife and two children and underwent a second ceremony in June, 1940, at Mount Hope. He has three children by this marriage.

[AL: Smith had two previous terms in the Ontario Reformatory. He was a farmer with five children and a wife, was 34, and a member of the United Church. He was convict #7461 at Kingston Penitentiary and worked mostly on the farm. A good conduct, first time offender, he was quickly transferred to Collin's Bay Penitentiary and worked on the prison farm there. He was paroled in January 1945.]

Circumstances of Disappearance: Sherry Lynn Marler was last seen at approximately 9:30 a.m. on June 6, 1984 in downtown Greenville, Alabama. She and her stepfather, Raymond, were at the First National Bank and he gave her a dollar to buy a soda. Sherry left the bank and was last seen crossing the street towards the Chevron gas station. When her stepfather returned to his pickup truck fifteen minutes later, Sherry was nowhere to be found.

After 25 minutes of searching for Sherry, Raymond called Sherry’s biological mother Betty to see if Sherry had stopped by at the Waffle House Betty worked at. Betty said no. She had last seen her daughter that morning asleep on the couch.

Raymond checked the obvious places and also asked around at the tractor shop and the feed store. Sherry’s nickname was “Little Farmer”  because she loved everything to do with farming, including hanging out at those stores. But no one had seen Sherry.

Sherry was officially reported at 11:46 a.m. on June 6, 1984 and a massive search effort was underway.

Witnesses saw Sherry walking across the parking lot by the General Telephone building and Jernigan’s Furniture store on her way to the gas station.

Investigators got information that Sherry may have been in the St. Stephen, Alabama area, near Betaw Road, later that month.

There were three reported sightings of Sherry by three different people after her disappearance. Each time, she was accompanied by a man, described as about 50 years old and 5'8 tall with a husky build, a weathered complexion and crow's feet around his eyes. One witness who saw her at a truck stop in Conley, Georgia said Sherry called the man B.J.

All three of the witnesses stated that Sherry was noticeably upset, disheveled and appeared dazed. The last sighting was in a mall in New Orleans, Louisiana later in 1984. None of the sightings were confirmed.

Her mother does not believe she ran away; she had been looking forward to watching her favorite television show and visiting her grandmother on the day of her disappearance, and she didn't have any significant problems in her life.

Raymond, Sherry’s stepdad, was the first person questioned by the police as he was the last person to see her. Raymond cooperated with authorities and answered all of their questions. But when they asked him to take a polygraph test he refused. Regardless, the police have said he was never a suspect in the case. His wife Betty was positive did not harm his stepdaughter. She said he never got over the fact that Sherry was with him when she vanished. Just before Raymond died in April 2003, he told his wife from his hospital bed, “Betty, I wish I could go get Sherry and bring her home to you, but I can’t, because I don’t know where she is.”

In 2018, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina said Sherry had stayed with her stepsister and her stepsister’s husband in the St. Stephen area near Betaw Road back in the summer of 1983. The authorities had received a tip that Sherry was spotted in the same area after she was reported missing in 1984.

On the Sherry Lynn Marler Still Missing Facebook page, a woman named Ryan Welch Anderson said that her and a group of volunteers had been searching tirelessly for years to find out what happened to Sherry. They found evidence they refused to keep: “Sherry Marler was murdered and dismembered by someone she knew very well (not her stepfather) and thrown into a hog pen in Butler County. We believe the person who murdered her is deceased. We strongly suspect there were 1 or 2 other people there at the time of her death, and that they are also deceased. We strongly suspect she was pregnant at the time. We believe she was a victim of a multiple family based incest pedophilia ring that involved people from both Butler and Crenshaw Counties.”

Ryan says they unearthed a pig farm that was functional in 1984 but had since been abandoned and reclaimed by nature. The group says they have video footage of two separate cadaver dog teams confirming hits on human remains in the area. During their excavation, the group discovered clothing that was sent in for DNA testing. The Greenville Police Department said no DNA evidence was found on the material.

Ryan also states that a surviving family member of the person she thinks murdered Sherry allowed her to look through a box of old photos. Some of the photos showed the pig farm up and running. And one photo in particular shocked Ryan – it was a photo of a pig standing by what she says is a severed human head that had not yet decomposed. Ryan says she took a picture of the photo with her phone.

The original photo was reportedly seized from the family member by law enforcement and turned over to the FBI. However, when nothing happened with the case Ryan called the FBI and says she was told they had never received any such photo.

Sherry’s case remains unsolved and is classified as a non-family abduction.

FRAME RATE: NORBERTO RODRIGUEZ (Art)

LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) continues its Frame Rate series, which focuses on film and video work, with the man behind the curtain by Norberto Rodriguez. The participatory work takes place on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Hollywood Improv and includes a live audience, as well as those following on a livestream or Instagram (@aschool.ofthought). From the gallery: “It will be a night unlike others: a journey through a portal in a head, questions answered, predictions made, wishes granted. Rodriguez wants to share his whole self. The only requirement is you.” Guests are welcome through the duration of the performance. Free admission, and food and drinks available for purchase.

PUBLICAN BEER DINNER (Food + drink)

Firestone Walker’s The Propagator in Venice in Venice holds the Publican Beer Dinner on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The brewers collaborated with The Publican in Chicago to create a new wild ale fermented with Pixie tangerines: Pixie Dusted. VITAMIN STRING QUARTET (Music)

TCM CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL (Classic films)

The 2018 TCM Classic Film Festival returns to Hollywood from Thursday to Sunday, featuring both classics and lesser-known titles. This year, the festival’s theme is Powerful Words: The Page Onscreen. Opening day films include Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Producers (1968) and To Have and Have Not (1944). Individual tickets (which run $20) will not be sold for the Opening Night Red Carpet Gala screening, the poolside screenings or panels because they’re passholder events. (Passes: $299-$2,149.)
