Cartagena Food & Columbia Travel Tips

Our kids’ favorite part of the trip? the amazing Colombia food! 
Cartagena Cuisine
We love seafood and really enjoyed the food in Cartagena. Their cuisine is a unique blend of Spanish, African, and indigenous influences. Being on the Caribbean coast means that seafood is a staple of the diet, and many dishes are also flavored with tropical fruits and spices.
This blog post does a great job of describing popular dishes in Cartagena:
Mojarra: a white freshwater fish with mild flavor, golden fried. It’s probably our favorite dish on the trip.  It’s usually served with yummy coconut rice, and patacones or fried plantains.

Cazuela de Mariscos: seafood stew, this one from Bogota came in still boiling in a pot.

Arroz Marinero / Arroz con mariscos - similar to Spanish paella, made with rice cooked in seafood broth and saut��ed with shrimp, and other seafood.

Ceviche: delicious as always, in Cartagena it’s sometimes made with coconut milk.

Posta Negra: This grilled steak is coated in a sweet and savory sauce. We actually had it in Bogota’s Origen Bistro. Their version is probably not the most authentic, but so tender and juicy.  Probably my favorite steak on any trip for the tender and sweet taste.  Sorry the picture didn’t do it justice.

Arepa de Huevo - Arepas, grilled or fried corn meal patties, are common all over Colombia and Venezuela.  However, there’s a unique spin on the arepa on the Colombian coast.  Before being thrown into the frying pot, the arepa is stuffed with an egg is cracked inside the arepa.  The finished product is a golden brown, crunchy, and super yummy arepa.

Mote de Queso: made with chunks of the salty, crumbly costeño cheese and ñame, a root vegetable similar to yams.

Empanadas: These savory pastries are filled with a variety of ingredients, this beef one has thin and crispy skin.

Pastebono, or cheese bread, is one of my all-time favorite food, so chewy and delicious. La Esquina del Pandebono makes these and flaky pastry with Posta Negra that tastes like beef jerky.  Don’t miss these!

Beer’s cheap here, about $2-2.50 in a restaurant.  The local Club Colombian beer is quite good. We usually had that with our meal or tried the limonada de coco (coconut limeade), so good!
And don’t forget of course the Colombian Coffee, very flavorful.
We didn’t try as much of the Bogota local cuisine.  Here’s a good blog post on that. Tell, next time!
Food tips
Food prices can vary greatly.  For 5 of us including 2 kids, most meals came to $30-50, as we didn’t go for for the fancier places or ate steak in Bogota.  
The exchange rate is 4,400 COP to 1 USD.  
I looked for restaurants on Google Maps.  The reviews are generally decent, as long as enough people rated. We did try one basic cafeteria place for dinner but didn’t really enjoyed the food much. So $$ is around the right range for us. 
I usually check for recommended dish in Google Maps and also ask the waiters.  Some of the best dishes I’ve had come from their recommendations, things I wouldn’t typically order. 
If you order steak or salmon, more catering to Western taste, it’s gonna cost more.  Stick with local cuisine and you’ll have more authentic and affordable food.
Finally, some quick travel tips.
Flights
We had amazingly smooth travel on this trip, every flight’s on time and smooth. The $300 roundtrip direct flight from Boston to Bogota was from Avianca, which charged $80 for a carry-on bag (one way), and for seats, and $3 for water.  Yep, that’s how they get you. ;-)
We flew Latam to Cartagena, which also charged for bags ($17/way) but did give water and good snacks. 
Data plan
Traveling without data plan would be a nightmare, as you need it to figure out where to go, Uber, and translation. Verizon offers $10/day data plan, while Google Fi has coverage of multiple countries.  I don’t have either, so I got the Airalo data-only eSIM instead for $8 for 1 GB/week. Note installing can be a bit of a challenge, so be patient. You can then use apps like TextNow to call if needed.
Language
Many locals don’t really speak English. So it helps to have about some common Spanish phrases handy.  After the trip, my son agrees that learning Spanish is a good idea!

I generally stick to simple words when traveling. It’s easier to remember and easier for others to figure out what I’m saying, so just “Baño” or “Baño, por favor”.  And lots of “Gracias” for being polite.
On your phone, the Google translate app also comes in handy.  You can save the Spanish dictionary on your phone.
Getting around
The easiest way to get around is using the Uber app. This saves you from having to explain where to go to taxi drivers.  And most rides are $2-5, quite cheap.  We had 5 people so not quite legal to ride in one cab.  We were able to negotiate with taxi drivers when needed, or just tell the Uber we have 3 adults and 2 kids, so they can come prepared.  You can tip Uber drivers 50 cents or $1 for good rides.  Our most expensive Uber ride was a scheduled ride 5am in the morning to the airport with bags, and that was only $14 USD.
Where to stay
I typically stay in the center of town where it’s easy to walk to sites and restaurants.  I chose hotels instead of Airbnbs on this trip, so we can easily ask for direction and other help.  It’s very safe in Cartagena. Staying in the walled old town or Centro so you can see everything.
In Bogota we stayed in the old town, Candelaria, to be close to the sites, and the hotel guy said it’s safe until 9pm. With grandparents and children, we’re usually back before then anyway.  For a more upscale stay, there are neighborhoods like Usaquén.

Mayfair / Jacks Chicken Shack is closed. They closed after failing to reopen for the 2019 season. Owner John has reverted to his own menu and recipes shortly after Gordon visited.
Le Deck is closed. They closed after failing to open for the 2017 summer season. After filming business was up and Steve had returned to their other restaurant in the mountains.
La Granada Divino is closed. They closed in September 2015, two years after filming, as owners Milan and Gina retired from the restaurant trade.
Quelcuttis Tapas is closed. They closed in 2015, 14 months after Gordon visited with his changes blamed for the closure.
Kitchen Nightmares Season 7
6 restaurants Aired: April 2014 – September 2014 Closure Rate: 67%
Pantaleone’s is open. Business improved 70% after the episode aired and they added a delivery service in 2017. Reviews are positive
Old Neighborhood Restaurant is closed. They closed as of May 1st 2016 after selling the restaurant business, the building was sold in June 2014.
Kati Allo is closed. They closed in April 2014, days after the episode aired. The closure was temporary for renovations but they never reopened.
Mangia Mangia is closed. They closed in November 2014 and Trevor went to rehab, got clean and planned to go to culinary school.
Zayna Flaming Grill is open. The restaurant was sold to a new owner in September 2015 and reviews are mostly positive.
Bella Luna is closed. They closed 3 and a half months after filming in November 2013 and blamed a dispute with the landlord. Back to the top

La Galleria 33 is closed. They closed suddenly in November 2018 with no announcement of the closure.
Barefoot Bobs is closed. They closed suddenly in December 2016 with no announcement of the closure. Prior to the closure they reverted to their old menu and brought back the tiki decor.
Mama Maria’s is open. John returned some customer favourites to the menu and tweaked recipes. Reviews are mostly positive with compliments to John, the atmosphere and service.
Ms Jean’s Southern Cuisine is open. They moved to a new location and reviews are positive. Reviews have improved significantly since 2017.
Olde Hitching Post is open. Reviews are mostly positive with seafood being popular. They stopped doing breakfast in 2019 to the disappointment of many.
Levanti’s American Bistro is closed. They closed in November 2013 after Tony decided to retire nine months after the episode was aired.
Sam’s Mediterranean kabob Room is closed. They closed in January 2014 as appearing on the show didn’t increase customers numbers and more competition had opened in the area.
Nino’s Italian Restaurant is closed. They closed in August 2016 due to retirement. Carina said that the remodel was done using cheap furniture that were not fit for purpose.
Mill Street Bistro is closed. Joe renamed the restaurant to Maple City Tavern and they closed in February 2016. Joe sued Gordon after the episode for missing items and damage to the restaurant.
Yanni’s Greek Restaurant is open. They returned some of their old dishes to the menu and reviews are mostly positive with the moussaka being a hit with customers.
Prohibition Grille is closed. They closed in July 2017. Chef Rocky opened his own restaurant that had excellent reviews prior to its closure.

Chappy’s is closed. Chappy blames the closure on Gordon and has opened and closed a number of restaurants since appearing on the show.
Amy’s Baking Company is closed. Amy closed the restaurant in September due to landlord troubles and after much online drama to open an online cookery school. Amy and Samy now live in Israel. Back to the top

15 restaurants Aired: September 2011 – March 2012 Closure Rate: 64%
Blackberry’s is closed. They closed in March 2013 as Shelly no longer saw room for growth, were maintaining and not getting the clientele they wanted.
Leone’s is open. Gordon revisited, the chefs had been fired and Michael wasn’t at the restaurant, he stepped up and reviews are mostly positive. Rose sadly passed away in April 2014.
Mike and Nellie’s is closed. They closed in January 21st 2012 and Mike now owns his own catering company.
Luigi’s D’ Italia is open. The restaurant moved location in December 2017 and opened a catering service. Reviews are positive with praise for the lasagna and pizza.
Burger Kitchen is closed. The restaurant was sold to new owners in August 2011, was rebranded and closed in February 2012.
The Greek at the Harbor is open. Some customers didn’t like the changes but reviews are generally positive with praise for the entertainment and food.
Michon’s is closed. They closed in August 2013 and two other locations closed – Downtown burnt down in a fire in March 2012 and Peach Tree Centre closed in early 2018. Reviews at the original location were negative after filming.
El Greco is closed. They closed in December 2011 as their debts were too large. Many staff had left due to conflict and reviews after filming were negative with complaints on food and service.
Park’s Edge is closed. They closed in early 2014 after their lease ran out and they did not open in a new location. They returned some items to the menu due to customer requests.
Spin A Yarn Steakhouse is open. They returned some dishes to the menu as requested by regulars and reviews are positive with the prime rib remaining a big hit with diners.
Charlie’s Italian Bistro is closed. They closed in July 2012 and Genevieve sadly passed away from complications due to epilepsy.
Cafe Hon is open. The locals appear to have forgiven Denise for the Hon trademark issue and reviews are positive with the meatloaf being popular among diners.
Chiarella’s Ristorante is closed. They closed on the 30th June 2015 after their lease expired and they could not afford an increase in rent.
Zocalo is closed. They closed January 2013 after failing to open after Christmas due to spiralling debts including for taxes. Greg and Mary divorced and he remarried waitress Maria. Back to the top

12 restaurants Aired: January 2011 to May 2011 Closure Rate: 83%
Spanish Pavillion is open. Michael has stepped away from the business and business is up since filming. Reviews are positive with praise for the paella and sangria.
Classic American is closed. The restaurant closed in August 2013 and they continued offering catering services.
PJ’s Steakhouse is closed. They closed a few weeks after filming in May 2010 as the takings were low and the debts were high and returned to the construction trade.
Grasshopper Also is closed. They closed in October 2012, was sold and reopened with new management, new staff and a new makeover. The restaurant has changed hands many times since.
Davide is closed. They closed in May 2014 after being sold in January 2014, as the owners wanted to start a farming venture and food tours of Boston North End.
Downcity is closed.They closed on 10th December 2011, after struggling in the decline of the local economy. Aby is now a personal trainer.
Cafe Tavolini is closed. They closed in December 2010, just weeks after filming with an answerphone recording saying that they were closing for medical reasons.
Kingston Cafe is closed. They closed as a restaurant in August 2018, however the space is still used for events and catering functions.
La Frite is closed. The restaurant was sold to a new owner in July 2016 and closed in September 2017 when the owner changed the restaurant to an Italian eatery called Modo Mio.
The Capri Restaurant featured in Kitchen Nightmares season 4 episode 10 and is closed. They closed in September 2019 due to the twins health issues and declining sales at the restaurant.
Zeke’s is closed. They closed in October 2012 after taping a notice to the door and the restaurant was sold to new owners. Daryll and Ellen now own LUCA Eats in New Orleans.
Oceana Grill is open. The restaurant was sold to new owners, who have sued the production company over clips showing the poor state of the kitchen as this does not represent the higher standards under their ownership. Back to the top

12 restaurants Aired: January 2010 – May 2010 Closure Rate:75%
Hot Potato Cafe is closed. They closed in August 2010 as their lease was due to expire and a closed sign was put up on the door. Danielle went to college and trained to be a nurse.
Flamangos/The Junction is closed. They closed in April 2011 as Bill and Adele decided to re-retire to Florida. Cheryl moved out of her parents house in 2016.
Bazzini is closed. Bazzini closed in June 2010 and Paul now works as a chef with his son. In a revisit we see Sharyn who had began working full time baking her cakes.
Mojito is closed. Mojito closed in March 2016 and Katalina went travelling, documenting her food journey on Instagram.
Lido di Manhattan is open. They host regular wine tasting and music events that are a huge hit and reviews are mostly positive with a few criticisms on service.
Le Bistro is open. They expanded into providing produce to a local market. Reviews are positive with the beef wellington and mushroom soup receiving rave reviews.
Casa Roma is closed. They reverted to their old menu and briefly rebranded as The AV Roadhouse Restaurant Bar & Grill before reverting back.They closed in July 2017.
Mama Rita’s is closed. They closed in December 2010 after abandoning Gordon’s menu but the catering business continued for a number of years.
Anna Vincenzo’s is closed.They closed in April 2010 and Cece sold the restaurant so that she could spend more time with her children. Cece and Michael had seperated.
Fleming is closed. They closed in October 2010, 5 months after airing after trying a number of different menus and event nights.
Sushi Ko is closed. They closed in August 2009. Lisa believes it was too little too late and Samy blames the show and the local economy. Back to the top

Handlebar is closed. They closed in 2009 shortly after Gordon revisited and the restaurant was sold. Bill sadly passed away after a cancer battle in November 2015.
Giuseppi’s is closed. They closed in July 2009, blaming the economy and the lack of a liquor license for the closure.
Trobiano’s is closed. They closed in October 2008 after the restaurant was seized by the state for not paying their taxes.
Black Pearl is closed. They closed just 4 days after the episode aired with owner David posting one a passive aggressive rant online at Gordon.
J Willy’s is closed. They closed in February 2009 after choosing to close rather than cut quality due to increasing food costs.
Hannah & Mason’s is closed. They They closed in February 2010 with Chris blaming Gordon’s menu and falling customer numbers for both the bistro and catering services.
Jack’s Waterfront is closed. They closed in December 2010, presumably due to their debts as reviews were much more positive after the episode was filmed.
Sabatiello’s is closed. They closed in October 2008 and Samy told the media that he regretted appearing on the show. He opened another pizzeria that closed due to unpaid rent.
Fiesta Sunrise is closed. They closed in September 2008 after the restaurant was seized due to failing to pay taxes. They had closed the previous year due to failing to pay taxes but paid in full and reopened.
Santé La Brea is closed. They closed in June 2011 after selling the restaurant. Dean retired in 2009 and was living overseas and the restaurant was run by his sons prior to closure.
Cafe 36 is closed. They closed on 18 April 2009 with the owners blaming the economy and Gordon’s changes to the restaurant for the closure. Back to the top

Peters is closed. They closed in December 2008 and their father passed away in 2009.
Dillons/Purnima is closed. They closed in 2009 and Martin tried to sue Gordon for $3million and to stop the show being aired but it was thrown out of court.
The Mixing Bowl is closed. They closed in January 2009. The restaurant had closed briefly before the filming of the show but reopened for filming.

Seascape is closed. They closed in August 2017 just five months after the episode was filmed and after reverting back to their old menu.
The Olde Stone Mill is open. The restaurant was sold to new owners in 2009 and Dean opened an Italian restaurant that closed in 2015. Dean has had minor acting roles and hosted a hunting show.
Sebastians is closed. They closed in January 2008 after the family moved back to Boston. Sebastian had a small part in a movie and runs landscaping and financial companies.
Finn McCool’s is closed. They sold the restaurant in 2009 with the family continuing to work there. They closed in March 2012 after an issue with the lease.
Lelas is closed. They closed shortly after filming as Lela’s debts were too high to recover.
Campania is closed. The restaurant was sold in September 2010 and eight days later Joe sadly took his own life. They closed in January 2011.
The Secret Garden is closed. They closed in March 2010 after selling the restaurant, this sale fell through but he found another buyer. He had abandoned Gordon’s changes quickly after filming. Back to the top
Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares/ Kitchen Nightmares UK
Aired: April 2004 – January 2009 24 restaurants Closure Rate: 83%
Note: I have reordered the episodes as Channel 4 have now clarified the official seasons.
The Dovecote Bistro/Martins is closed. They closed in October 2015 as the business was sold to new owners, they had abandoned the upstairs bistro and focused on the cafe side of the business.
Runaway Girl/Silversmiths is open. Justin sold the restaurant to new owners in April 2017 after winning numerous awards and it has changed hands multiple times since and has closed without warning.
Ruby Tates/Loves Fish is closed. They closed in January 2009, due to the drop in the local economy leading to a lack of bookings
The Priory is closed. They closed in 2008 after Scott reverted the restaurant back to serving carvery dinners and abandoning Gordon’s idea of a grill house.
The Curry Lounge is closed. Raz sold the restaurant in 2015 and it closed in 2018. In 2017 Raz admitted to £65,000 of tax fraud in relation to the restaurant.
Piccolo Teatro is closed. They closed in April 2007 before Gordon revisited and Rachel became a hooker. India has had a very successful kitchen career after work experience with Gordon.
The Granary is closed. They closed in January 2008 after an arson attack gutted the restaurant. The arsonist was jailed in September 2018 after spending 10 years on the run.
The Fish and Anchor is closed. They closed in 2008, the business listed for sale at £295,000 and was sold in 2009. After the closure Mike planned to move to Italy.
La Parra de Burriana is closed. They closed in August 2008 with Lawrence closing the restaurant suddenly and Lawrence has since changed his name.
The Fenwick Arms is open. The pub was sold in 2009 and has changed hands twice since. Brian and Elaine are now at The Ship Inn in Aldborough.
Rococo/Maggies is closed. They closed in September 2007 and they filed for bankruptcy.
Morgans is closed. They closed as the business was sold in November 2007. Sandy returned to her antiques shop, Laura was an actress with some bit parts and Phil was jailed for theft for stealing cheques.
La Lanterna is closed. Despite an increase in business, they closed in 2006 and the building was put up for sale.
D-Place is closed. They closed weeks after filming in 2004. It went into receivership and the lease was put up for sale before Gordon was able to revisit.
Momma Cherri’s is closed. Shortly after filming they moved into a much larger restaurant called Momma Cherri’s Big House restaurant. They closed in 2009 due to large debts.
La Riviera is open. The restaurant was renamed to Contrast and has positive reviews. Loic returned to France and opened L’atelier du peintre, which gained a Michelin star in 2011.
The Sandgate Hotel is open. The business was sold by Lois and Peter in 2006 and has changed hands at least twice since.
Clubway 41/Jacksons featured in Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares season 2 episode 7 and is closed. They closed in September 2006, shortly after Gordon revisited and they seemed to have given up.
La Gondola is closed. The restaurant closed in 2007 and the hotel remained open for a few more years. The abandoned building was targeted by squatters and vandals and Daniella sadly passed away in July 2019.
Oscars is closed. They closed in October 2005 as Maura sold the restaurant and Lenin went into rehab.
Bonapartes is closed. They closed in 2005 and was sold for £450,000. Sue was left homeless and in debt and both Sue and Tim were disqualified from driving for drink driving.
The Glass House is closed. They closed in March 2014 and reopened as The Fulling Mill. The restaurant is still owned by Neil Farrell.
The Walnut Tree Inn is open. They closed in February 2007 and reopened in December under a new owner. The restaurant was awarded a Michelin star in 2010 and every year since.
Moore Place is closed. They closed in 2006 when the owners sold the restaurant after starting to go back to their old ways. Back to the top

100% Delicias Express (660A Centre St., Jamaica Plain, Boston): A takeout-focused offshoot of Roslindale’s 100% Delicias, focusing on empanadas, cativias, mofongo, and more.
Aceituna Grill (100 Federal St., Downtown Boston): This is the third location for the fast-casual Mediterranean spot, which originated in Kendall Square and later expanded to the Seaport District.
Adventure Pub (190 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington): A gastropub with board games, card games, and immersive theater events, located in the former Bistro Duet space.
Bonapita (75 Spring St., West Roxbury, Boston): This casual Mediterranean spot from downtown Boston expanded to West Roxbury, in the former BurgerFi space.
The Breakfast Spot (651 Warren St., Grove Hall, Boston): Breakfast sandwiches, shrimp and grits, and more.
Coffee Break Cafe (680 Truman Pkwy., Hyde Park, Boston): A small group of local cafes, around for over 20 years, has added a fourth location, its first in Boston. There are also locations in Quincy (two) and Milton.
Forcella (North End, Boston): A new Italian restaurant in the old Carmen space in the North End.
Formaggio Kitchen (94 Hampshire St., Cambridge): The cheese-and-more shop has opened its third Massachusetts location (there’s one in New York, too.) This location is primarily aimed at beefing up Formaggio’s catering operations, but there’s plenty of retail products and sandwiches as well.
Giacomo’s Ristorante (14 Elissa Ave., Wayland): This Italian favorite from Boston’s North End and South End, and more recently Melrose, has now expanded to Wayland as well.
In Season Food Shop (Bow Market, 1 Bow Market Wy., Union Square, Somerville): The latest addition to Bow Market serves prepared foods — mac and cheese, soups and salads, and more — and sells local products and produce.
Jamaica Mi Hungry (300B Athenaeum St., Kendall Square, Cambridge): This local Jamaica food business is popping up in the kiosk across from 360 E. Kendall St. until spring.
Mitho Restaurant (831 Main St., Winchester): A Nepali restaurant in the former Cafe Piazza Dolce space, serving momos, curry, and more.
Poke Garden (10 Harvard St., Brookline Village): Poke bowls, “makirittos,” and more in the former Clover space.
Poké Station and Kitchen (Northeastern University, 313 Huntington Ave., Boston): Poke, sushi burritos, dumplings, Korean fried chicken, and more, right on Northeastern’s campus.
Shaking Seafood (19 Poplar St., Roslindale, Boston): One of a growing number of Cajun-style seafood boil restaurants in and around Boston.
Shine Square Pub (2046 Massachusetts Ave., Porter Square, Cambridge): A revamping of McCabe’s Bar & Grille, with some new folks overseeing things. Sambuca on tap, pinball and foosball, new televisions, and more, plus lots of wings.
The Square (1 Pond St., Sharon): Rachel Klein (Mandarin Oriental, Liquid Art House) oversees the menu at this replacement for the longtime Pizzigando in the center of town. There are burgers, steak frites, tacos, rice bowls, and more, plus a lot of local beers.
Stella’s Restaurant & Wine Bar (94 Lafayette St., Salem): Located in the former Smokin’ Betty’s space, Stella’s features a long list of wines from around the world, along with seafood, pasta, raw bar items, and more.
Tender Greens (Copley Place, 100 Huntington Ave., Back Bay, Boston): Following a Chestnut Hill location that opened in the spring, this is the second Massachusetts location for the casual California chain, which features seasonal, local ingredients in customizable protein-greens-and-a-side plates.
Theory: Wine Bar + Listening Room (10 Main St., Andover): A live music club and wine bar with a menu of small bites (cheese, charcuterie, sweets, etc.)
Urban Axes (2 Union Sq., Union Square, Somerville): Axes and booze. What could go wrong? (There’s a small food menu, too.)
Wahlburgers (South Bay, 9 District Ave., Dorchester, Boston): The Wahlberg family has brought its ever-growing burger chain to their hometown.

7 Central (7 Central St., Manchester-by-the-Sea): The restaurant had been around for nearly four decades, but longtime restaurateur Paul Barclay took the reins about four years ago and retired at the end of 2018. A small group of local Italian restaurants, Antique Table, will take over the space early in 2019.
Best Burger Bar (6 Station St., Brookline Village): After a little over a year in business, this burger-focused restaurant, which also served boozy milkshakes and a cocktail list from local cocktail legend Brother Cleve, has closed.
Brio Tuscan Grille (200 Boylston St., Chestnut Hill): The restaurant shuttered after its parent company was acquired by a private equity firm.
The Citizen Wine Bar (1 Exchange St., Worcester): The decade-old Citizen, along with its adjoining spaces the People’s Kitchen and Still & Stir, closed at the end of the year.
Crema Cafe (27 Brattle St., Harvard Square, Cambridge): This decade-old mainstay is being pushed out by new development — a New York-based chain cafe is coming in — but Crema will live on in its new sister spot Revival Cafe, which is now open in Alewife and opening any day now in Davis Square.
Erbaluce (69 Church St., Bay Village, Boston): This acclaimed Italian restaurant was open for a decade. The building that houses it is being redeveloped, and although the restaurant could have potentially reopened after construction, it wasn’t a viable option due to liquor licensing rules and other factors. Stay tuned: The Erbaluce team might open something new, but probably something more casual and/or not in Boston proper.
L’Espalier (774 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): This upscale French-New England restaurant closed at the end of the year after a 40-year run in three different Back Bay locations. Frank McClelland, who has been chef and owner for the past 30 years, after buying the restaurant from founder Moncef Meddeb, announced that it’s been a great run, but he has to “do something else that feeds [his] soul,” and the lease was up.
Margaritas (75 Station Lndg., Medford): This location of the Mexican chain, which has locations around the Northeast, closed in December when its lease expired.
McCabe’s Bar & Grille (2046 Massachusetts Ave., Porter Square, Cambridge): McCabe’s — sibling spot to Bull McCabe’s in Union Square, Somerville — closed this month, and after some quick renovations, it reopened as Shine Square Pub, with a few new faces overseeing things.
Naked Fish (455 Totten Pond Rd., Waltham): The seafood-focused restaurant served everything from paella to Cuban sandwiches.
Rani Indian Bistro (1353 Beacon St., Coolidge Corner, Brookline): The Indian restaurant had been open for 15 years. It will be replaced by a hot pot restaurant.
Shepard (1 Shepard St., Cambridge): After opening in 2016 and snapping up some local and national acclaim, particularly for its wood-fired cooking, Shepard had to switch away from wood fire due to neighborhood complaints. The restaurant closed at the end of the year and will reopen as something new from the same team early in 2019.
Tealuxe (0 Brattle St., Harvard Square, Cambridge): The tea shop and cafe had been open for over 20 years.

Looking back at December 2017, openings included a fried chicken haven in Inman Square; a boisterous sushi spot in South Boston; a Thai restaurant focused on Bangkok street foods in Davis Square; a Back Bay location of an acclaimed suburban deli; and more.
On the closure side, Boston lost the latest incarnation of an Inman Square mainstay (which turned into the aforementioned fried chicken spot); a popular Allston ramen spot (which later relocated to Medford); a fairly young Italian restaurant in the South End; and more.
In other news in December 2017, rooftop igloos made their return; local food writers waxed nostalgic on the food news of the year; and Eater announced its annual award winners.

The Town of Celebration was designed and built by Disney and is just beautiful. These days, it's a town in its own right with large imposing Georgetown style mansions reminiscent of Gone With The Wind. It's well worth putting on your 'must visit' list. If you're staying in one of our vacation homes, Celebration is the closest downtown location. Just 10-15 minutes away.
And such a great location demands quality dining.
Celebration Florida restaurants don't disappoint.
Downtown Celebration centers on two streets: Market Street, lined with stores and eateries, and Front Street, overlooking Lake Rianhard and its’ calm shimmering waters.
For such a compact downtown area, Celebration Florida restaurants offer a huge range of choice.
There are numerous full service restaurants, diners, cake shops, ice cream parlor plus a bakery and deli.
With cuisine from Cuba, France, Italy, Thailand, Japan, Mexico and good old USA, it's a culinary trip around the world in a quarter-mile space.
So Lets Take a Closer Look at Celebration Florida Restaurants
Columbia Restaurant
Columbia Restaurant has the distinction of being Florida's oldest restaurant chain. And when we say 'chain' don't think big conglomerate. There are only 7 restaurants in this family run business, all located in Florida.
First opened in Ybor City way back in 1905, the same family still own and run the business today. The Celebration restaurant has an elegant Mediterranean setting with Spanish/Cuban cuisine in olde worlde surrounds. There's also an outside courtyard, a Tapas Bar and a restaurant store.
Slightly upmarket, casual dress is acceptable, although sleeveless shirts on men is not. The formal dining room offers something a little more elegant, while the outdoor sidewalk patio offers casual seating with overhead fans.
Start dinner with a tableside prepared Mojito, or choose from the extensive wine list. Or go for a Cerveza - local and craft beers are available.

The extensive menu features delicious homemade bean soups and several salads including the "World Famous" 1905. The 1905 salad is prepared by your server tableside and uses an age-old secret family recipe.
The Tapas menu features plenty of choice for sharing. Have as an appetizer, or create a whole meal from the selections.
The wide variety of entrees include seafood, a fine selection of steaks including the house special Filet Mignon Chacho flambed tableside. The chicken menu includes the Valenciana, an original baked casserole that helped the restaurant along the road to success all those years ago.
Or you could opt for paella - several choices are offered as well as our favorite, Paella “A la Valenciana”. The paella is made to order and takes around 30 minutes to prepare.
And if you can't decide, combos might be the way to go. Try the La Completa Cubana for a flavorful Cuban feast. Or the Marilyn & Joe “Salteado” named after famous patrons of the 1950's, Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe.
Make sure you save room for dessert. A personal favorite is the White Chocolate Bread Pudding. Or is it the Churros “Tres Amigos”? Oh wait, what about the Key Lime Pie? Great-grandmother Carmen was born in Key West. When the family moved to Ybor City, what did they pack? Yup, they uprooted the Key Lime Tree so they could still have delicious 'real' Key Lime Pie.
Columbia Restaurant also has a store offering Cuban and American roast coffee, salad dressings and even fine cigars.

Imperium Food & Wine
With a wide selection of wines from across the world, Imperium Food and Wine are open for brunch, lunch and dinner.
There's an impressive variety of soup and salads, flatbreads and sandwiches, sliders and wraps. Choices of fillings include chicken, pork, brisket, turkey, salmon, shrimp and way too many more to mention.
Weekend Specials are available from Thursday - Saturday nights and they also do a Sunday Brunch, including a Kid’s Brunch.

Celebration Town Tavern
Celebration Town Tavern is a sprawling family owned New England style seafood and steak house that opened in 2000.
As well as an extensive menu, Celebration Town Tavern is beer drinker paradise, offering a choice of 99 beers in bottles and a dozen or so on draft.
Special Boston style food favorites include an award-winning New England Chowder, fish-n-chips, Maine lobster roll, meatloaf or turkey stacker and franks and beans.
New England Clam Chowder, Bruschetta, Celebration Town Tavern, Mahi Mahi, Lobster Roll
Appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and a host of half pound burgers such as black and blue burger, spicy black bean burger and bison burger are all sizzling in the kitchen.
Clams, oysters, salmon, mahi mahi and Boston scrod (young white fish such as cod or haddock) from the sea and steak, ribs, filet mignon and chicken go some way towards completing the wide choice.
This place is a favorite neighborhood gathering place with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Chill out on the outdoor deck, or take a seat inside in the New England style dining room. There's also a bar area with numerous TVs for sporting events.

Cafe D'Antonio
For a taste of Italy, head straight over to Cafe D’Antonio. Featuring dishes from various Italian regions, the restaurant is located on the corner of Front Street and Market Street and offers elegant and casual dining inside or dine al fresco overlooking the lake.
Cafe D'Antonio features an open kitchen with a wood burning oven, grill and rotisserie.
A large and varied menu features Italian classics such as such Antipasto Misto, Caprese, Mussels Fradiavolo and Bruschetta Romana for appetizers.
There's a wide choice of pasta dishes, fresh fish, chicken, ribs, lamb, veal, Black Angus steak, filet mignon and…..er, what’s the other thing they make? Oh, yes..pizzas.
Have pizza grilled or calzone style from a wide selection, or make your own creation from the list of toppings.
For open flame oak wood specials, try the New York strip, rib eye or salmon. Entree's include mama's staples such as lasagne, braised lamb shank and Zuppa Di Pesce, a delicious fish broth traditionally from Southern Italy.
The rotisserie chicken is another popular choice, prepared with fresh herbs, garlic and olive oil.
Make sure you leave room for famous desserts like Tiramisu or the imported Lemon Ripieno. Chocolate lovers will be a tad partial to the Torta di Cioccolato, a rich traditional chocolate cake. And for a real taste of Italy to finish off dinner, try the Tartufo al Cioccolato, a decadent chocolate truffle.

Ari Sushi
Ari Sushi is an authentic Japanese restaurant offering a sushi bar and sushi dining room.
Sit outside and enjoy the peace and quiet of Celebration, or sit at the counter and watch the chefs create.
There's a wide range of sushi and a large selection of traditional dishes. It might be confusing, but the staff are incredibly helpful and will answer any questions for those not familiar with Japanese dining.
House specialties include filet mignon, chicken picante, mango salmon, sea bass and New York Steak. There is also a Kid’s menu and an extensive lunch menu.

Market Street Cafe
Market Street Cafe has recently undergone a huge refurbishment and is now a contemporary diner style eatery. Open from 7am through 10pm, Market Street Cafe offers breakfast, soups & salads, sandwiches, wraps and build your own omelettes.
Entrees include family favorites like meatloaf and Southern chicken plus build your own burgers, sandwiches and wraps, steaks and seafood. There's a kids menu and a gluten free menu too.

Avocado Mexican Grill
One of the newer Celebration Florida restaurants, Avocado Mexican Grill has also changed ownership in May 16.
As well as a whole range of Mexican food, Avocados also offers Mexican styled cocktails and margaritas.
For a little taste of tradition, Avocado offer the usual favorites such as burritos, quesadilla and enchiladas. House specialties include Chile Relleno which is pepper stuffed with cheese topped with sauce. Alambre is a selection of meats and sausage with melted cheese and sides. For vegetarians, they offer a selection of veggie creations including fajita, burritos and quesadilla.
For the kids, there's Taco Junior, Burrito Junior, Quesadilla Junior and chicken fingers.
Make sure you leave room to squeeze in a dessert. Deep Fried Ice Cream and Churros are among the sweet treats on offer.

Upper Crust Pizza
Opened in 2001, the Upper Crust Pizza serves two styles of pizza, thick Sicilian and New York with toppings of your choice. Take the whole pizza, or just grab a slice to go.
The "Crusti" is the specialty - an open face Calzone stuffed with homemade meatloaf, steak and Greek salad.
Other options include oven baked subs and wraps, chicken wings and salads.

Thai Thani
Thai Thani was established by a member of the Thai Ministry of Commerce to promote Thai cuisine, traditional decor and their warm and friendly culture. In theory, this is hoped to be the start of a chain of similar restaurants throughout America and Europe.
The extensive dinner menu offers an abundance of appetizers, soups, salads, seafood, chicken, beef and pork to whet the appetite. And if that is not enough to make your head spin with choice, they also serve spicy dishes, noodles and fried rice, duck specials and house specialties.
The chef will cook to order so you can choose your own heat level.

Kilwin's Ice Cream Parlor
For sweet tooth cravings, head to Kilwins. This ice cream parlor serves a whole range of ice cream flavors, shakes and sundaes. The smell of chocolate, caramel, corn and fudge being hand-crafted in store is enough to make you drool while standing in line.
You can watch as a host of tempting treats are made using methods that have not changed since they were originated in 1947. The signature turtle fudge is a delight. The covered apples are hand-dipped in hand-made caramel and coated in an array of toppings. Traditional copper kettles are used to make the corns and brittle.
The store carries a range of boxed and wrapped goodies if you're looking for a sweet gift. There's always seasonal gifts available too.
So what's our favorite ice cream flavor? The toasted coconut and mint chocolate chip always manage to make an appearance on the bill. And the turtle cheesecake is usually included somewhere in the dilemma when trying to make a decision.
Sit on the sidewalk tables, soak up the sunshine and watch the kids squealing with excitement as they play in the fountain opposite.

Le Macaron
And just to rub sugar on the wound, the French bakery next door has a delightful range of treats with a little bit of French elegance thrown in for good measure.
The macaron is widely considered to be the jewel in the pastry crown in Europe. These brightly colored confectionery delights are a sight for sore eyes as well as temptation for the taste buds. Would you believe there are only 80 calories each? Apparently so! Gluten free too.

Pop in and see the colorful display and you're sure to come out smiling. There's gourmet chocolate, hand-made candies, creamy French gelato and classic French pastries along with European style coffee.
