I've been thinking a bit on the way my perception of Trigun changed before and after watching the show, and I said before that I thought it would be like "anime Lucky Luke".
One thing I also remember is the impression Vash's character design left on me at the time.
When I first saw (98 version of) him I was under the impression he was supposed to be extremely badass. But also it would be a very comedy-oriented show? Idk my impressions were very contradictory. Basically I thought Vash would be the cool and stoic type.
And so there's this one thing about his design that was putting me off: his eyes. Because everything about his design screams ruthless anime anti-hero: long red coat with a long collar and glasses that make him unreadable, seemingly all black underneath, with big badass boots, and equally big gun, and with his wide shoulders and his hair pulled up, plus the earring (mind you I only associated earrings on men with pirates and criminals at the time) to complete the look, everything about him on first impression does ring as dangerous. Except his soft, kind, pretty eyes, with a mole that just accentuates the impression.
And back then, before actually interacting with Trigun, I didn’t like that. Why would you give your character such a contradiction when making the design?? Stay coherent, give him bold eyes or soften his general appearance, make it make sense!
And it makes so, so, so much sense. Yeah, life did get to Vash, a lot, but the kindness of his heart shows, it shows so much he can't hide it from his eyes. But the rest of the world thinks him dangerous, and so he needs to make himself look dangerous, even needs to regularly convince himself he's dangerous in the manga.
So he covers his kindness, his tenderness up in big bold reds and imposing blacks. And when that doesn't scare people away? Then he plays the fool, because an idiot is not someone to be feared, not someone who needs to be seen through to be tolerated. A fool isn't supposed to have anything to hide. So his heart that his kind eyes struggle to keep in doesn't get exposed.
It's interesting that his design leans more into the dangerous side of things when his attitude reflects more of the fool one. Vash doesn't like to be thought of as an idiot, but he'll always take that over being seen as dangerous, even when percieved by dangerous people.
I guess his design isn't meant to fool the characters of the story, but to fool us, the viewers? I guess people on No Man's Land/Gunsmoke are used to people looking dangerous, and even with his very much red coat, Vash just sort of fades into the crowd if he looks like a weird guy like any other.
That aside, it's still very funny to see how much of his outside presentation can be used as a way to decieve, and how little that worked on Wolfwood.
