Almost World Animal Day, so here's a short Wolfstar dog-related fic!
Nothing but fluff and humour.
Summary:
Remus is sitting outside alone, and Lily comes to talk to him, thinking he might be upset because of his secret feelings for Sirius Black, that only Lily knows about. However, Remus is acting very weird. He really, really seems to not want to talk about it, and even seems embarrassed, while he and Lily have talked about it plenty of times. And what’s going on with that strange-acting, huge black dog, that allegedly just wandered up to Remus?
Not in front of the dog!
Remus clenches his fist around his drink, his knuckles turning white. He takes a sip from his Pumpkin Juice, but the sweet taste does nothing to counter the bitter taste in his mouth.
Gryffindor just defeated Slytherin in a trilling Quidditch match. Team captain James Potter had created a strong team, and was in great shape himself, flying perfectly in sync with his fellow Chaser Sirius Black. Really, there was something captivating about watching those two work together. The ecstatic Gryffindors had gone back to their tower singing and cheering, and were now having drinks, playing music, chatting and laughing in the common room. It was supposed to be a happy occasion, and it probably was, for everyone but Remus.
Remus glares at the other side of the room, where Sirius is standing with Benjy Fenwick, who had wanted to ‘congratulate Black on his great game’. And sure, Sirius had played a great game, and he deserves all the praise he can get, but surely, you don’t need over half an hour to say ‘Oi, Black, great game’. And also, the noise level in the room really isn’t so high that it requires Fenwick to lean in so close, with his lips almost touching Sirius’s ear, for Godric’s sake. And the hand Fenwick has placed on Sirius’s shoulder just seems unnecessary, and his other hand, resting on Sirius’s lower back, is definitely unnecessary, and has absolutely no business slowly sliding down like that!
But what’s even worse than Fenwick’s complete disregard for Sirius’s personal space, is that Sirius seems not to mind at all. And why would he? Sirius is a young, single, incredibly handsome guy, who just played the Quidditch match of his life. Why shouldn’t he be talking and laughing at a party, while boys, who are maybe kind of cute if you like the type, flirt with him?
Remus quickly adverts his eyes when Sirius’s gaze wanders over to him. What Sirius doesn’t deserve is to have this moment, his moment, spoilt by Remus acting all sulky because he was dumb enough to fall in love with a guy miles out of his league, whom he’s lucky to be even friends with. As Sirius’s trademark barking laugh echoes through the common room, because apparently Fenwick is suddenly oh so very funny, Remus has had enough. He smashes his glass down, causing Peter to look up, startled.
“I need some air,” Remus says, and before Peter can even respond, he turns around and heads towards the portrait hole. He vaguely notices Lily giving him a concerned look, before he climbs outside and is free from the crowd.
Remus ends up sitting outside on the grass underneath a tree, which is still illuminated by the last rays of sunlight, so it’s not awfully chilly yet. He tries to put all thought from his mind, but he barely has time to do that before he hears a voice.
“Oi, Moony!”
Remus looks up, although he doesn’t actually have to look to know who that voice belongs to. He sees Sirius making his way over across the field, giving Remus plenty of opportunity to stare while he approaches. Even ploughing through the grass in his dishevelled robes with his hair blowing everywhere, he still looks like a bloody model during a photoshoot.
When Sirius arrives to where Remus is sitting, he immediately flops down next to him on the grass and brushes his long, dark hair back.
“Alright, Moony? You were suddenly gone without saying anything.”
It didn’t seem like Sirius would even notice his absence, but right as Remus thinks it, he realises that it’s not true. Apparently, Sirius did immediately notice his absence, as he immediately came after him. Remus feels a surge of satisfaction as he thinks of Benjy Fenwick, who now has to find somewhere else to put his hands.
Remus manages a small smile. “You know me. I sometimes just have to get away from the crowd.”
Sirius bumps his shoulder against Remus’s. “You could’ve said something! I would’ve gone with you.”
“It’s basically your party! With you being the reason we won that match in the first place. Well, you and Prongs. You should be there enjoying the celebration, not sit out here in the damp grass with me.”
“Our party or not, Prongs and I want our best mate to enjoy himself as well!”
“I’m fine, Padfoot,” Remus reassures him. “Really, just go. You... You looked like you were really having fun.”
Sirius’s grey eyes suddenly become soft as he looks at Remus, and Remus feels like there’s a whole hoard of butterflies fluttering around in his stomach.
“But you have that look on your face,” Sirius says. “I hate seeing that look on your face and I hate leaving you alone with that look on your face.”
Remus feels conflicted. He still feels guilty making Sirius sit here outside, while he could be doing so much more fun things. On the other hand, he can’t deny he feels secretly pleased Sirius is here with him, where Fenwick can’t place his hands where they don’t belong.
Sirius must see the conflict play out on his face, as he suddenly envelops Remus in a tight hug. In Sirius’s arms, caring and protective around him, Remus’s last hope of ever getting over his feelings flies out the door. He just has to accept that he’ll forever be hopelessly pining after Sirius, because he just has to go and be so bloody great.
When Sirius lets him go he has a grin on his face. “Maybe I should cheer you up.”
“I don’t need-” But before Remus can finish his sentence, Sirius shifts smoothly into his dog form, which still leaves Remus in awe, no matter how many times he sees it.
The dog dashes away and starts jumping, running and rolling through piles of leaves, chasing the ones that scatter through the air.
“You’re being ridiculous!” Remus shouts, but he can’t help the corners of his mouth curling upwards, and when the dog starts spinning around chasing his own tail, he lets out an actual laugh.
“Is that a dog?”
The dog freezes mid-spin and Remus whirls his head around to see Lily Evans standing a few feet away.
“Eh... I... Yeah. Yeah, it is,” Remus stammers. “He just... wandered over here, probably from someone in Hogsmeade.”
“What a big boy!” Lily walks over to the dog and starts scratching him behind his ears. “And he’s so handsome! Yes you are, aren’t you? Yes you are! You’re a handsome big boy!”
The dog, however, seems to have forgotten how to dog. He just stares at Lily with a stunned expression. Remus unceremoniously shoves the dog with his foot. The dog blinks at him, and then shakes himself out of his surprised state. He starts wagging his tail, panting and jumping up and down.
Lily chuckles and sits down next to Remus. “I came to see how you’re doing.”
Remus suddenly gets a dreadful feeling in his stomach. While James is still in the hopeless pining-phase (but really, who’s Remus to judge on that?), Remus is actually good friends with Lily. Which means Lily knows things about Remus. Many things. Too many things. Things his other friends don’t know, and aren’t suppose to ever know. Remus honestly trusts Lily with his life, but right now, he really wishes he never told her anything at all.
“I’m fine,” Remus says. “Absolutely fine. Just getting some fresh air. Lovely day today, is it not?”
“Come on, Remus,” Lily says. “You know you can be honest with me. I saw Black with Fenwick.”
The dog stops panting, and tilts his head to the side.
“Yes, they looked like they were having fun.” Remus’s voice sounds almost manic. “Good for them, right? I mean, why shouldn’t they have fun? I want them to have fun. I want them to have so much fun. Not that I care, of course. Why should I care if they’re having fun? It has absolutely nothing to do with me, and it’s absolutely completely unrelated to me sitting outside.”
In his panicked state, Remus picks up a stick and throws it away. “Fetch!” He shouts desperately at the dog.
If the dog had been physically capable of raising one eyebrow, that’s what he would’ve been doing right now. He gives Remus a look that clearly says ‘if you think I’m going to miss the rest of this conversation to retrieve a dirty piece of wood, you’re sorely mistaken’.
“There’s no need to be embarrassed, Rem,” Lily says. “It’s completely understandable to be upset when you see the guy you’re mad about flirt with someone else.”
Remus groans. “Lily, can we please not talk about this now?”
“Alright, alright.” Lily throws up her hands in defeat. “Just so you know, I heard there’s nothing going on between them. And Fenwick was flirting with him more than he was flirting with Fenwick, if that makes you feel any better.”
Normally it would, but staring at his knees while feeling the dog’s eyes burning on him, Remus just wants the earth to swallow him up whole.
“Even if Sirius was flirting with him, he has every right to do so!” Remus exclaims. “It’s none of my business. He doesn’t owe me anything.” Remus looks up at the dog. “I’d never want to jeopardize our friendship.”
The dog looks back at him with an unreadable expression. Or maybe that’s just Remus’s lack of experience in reading complex emotions on dogs’ faces.
Lily lets out a disbelieving laugh. “That’s a whole different outlook than last time we talked, when you were practically doodling Mr. Remus Black on your parchment! You wouldn’t stop talking about how clever and caring he is, honestly making me wonder if we were talking about the same person. And you were telling me you almost fainted when he came out of the bathroom wearing just a towel, and how you couldn’t focus on anything during Herbology, because you were standing behind Black and couldn’t stop staring at his-”
“Lily!” Remus shouts, hiding his face in his hands.
Lily sighs. “Look Remus, if he’s really so caring, he’s not going to let this ruin your friendship. I admit that I have no idea how he’ll react, but maybe you should just tell him. Then at least the cat is out of the bag!”
Remus huffs a laugh, as that really won’t be necessary anymore. This just proves that, when in the presence of a dog, all cats should be kept securely in their respective bags at all times.
“I’m sorry, Remus,” Lily says as Remus stays quiet. “You’re obviously not in the mood to talk. I didn’t mean to push you.”
“It’s okay,” Remus manages to say, as it really isn’t her fault.
Lily presses a kiss against his cheek. “And let me tell you, you’re smart, witty and kind, and a much better catch than Benjy Fenwick, no offense to him.”
“Thanks, Lils.” Remus gives her a weak smile.
Lily gets up on her feet, and makes her way back to the castle.
Remus peaks through his finger, to see the dog still sitting there. He’s relieved, really. He’d rather look at the dog with some indescribable expression than see the clear emotion of... what? Pity? Fear? Shock? Amusement? On Sirius’s actual face. Right now, Remus wishes he were the Animagus, so he could turn into an animal and never turn human again. Just start a life as an animal. Preferably a bird. Yes, Remus muses. He could live a happy life as a bird.
He’s rudely interrupted in making future plans about building nests and eating worms when the dog suddenly leaps up against him.
“Oef!” Remus falls back on the grass, his hands automatically grabbing the fur. The dog has his paws on Remus’s shoulders and while lying on top of Remus with his huge body.
Before Remus has a chance to process anything, there’s a shift, and suddenly a very human Sirius is lying on top of him with his very, very human body. Sirius is practically beaming at him. He may not be a dog anymore, but Remus can practically see him wagging his tail.
Remus can’t comprehend why, after hearing about his utterly embarrassing infatuation, Sirius would respond by lying on top of him. But Remus’s fingers, that were just moments ago pressing in soft, black fur, are suddenly resting low on Sirius’s hips, and Sirius’s hands have slid into his neck and his face is really, really close, so Remus’s brain capacity is rendered to zero and he’s in no state comprehend anything. He just lies there and blinks up at Sirius.
“So,” Sirius says. “I heard a rumour.”
“Did you now?” Remus mumbles weakly.
Sirius hums. “I did. I heard that this smart, witty and kind boy is really into me. Do you reckon that could be true?”
Remus swallow, his throat suddenly dry. “What if it was?”
“Well,” Sirius says. “Then I think I’d just have to kiss him.”
“Wha-” Remus eyes grow wide and he stares at Sirius in shock. “Why... why would you do that?”
“Because I suppose I have this kind of crush on him.”
“Are you serious?” Remus regrets the words the moment they leave his mouth, and waits for the inevitable pun.
“I’m always-” Sirius stops himself and frowns. “No, actually I’m not,” he says and Remus’s stomach drops. “If I’m really being serious, I can’t call it a kind of crush. Truth is, I’m head over heels in love with him.” He leans in even closer. Remus can see a slight flush on his cheeks, and can feel his breath against his lips. “So, these rumours,” Sirius whispers. “Any truth to them?”
“Yes,” Remus says. “Yes, it’s all-”
He’s cut off by Sirius firmly pressing his lips against his. He wraps his arms around Sirius’s waist and pulls him even closer. Sirius’s hands are now cupping his face, and it’s everything.
When they stop for air, Sirius is smiling against his lips. “One more thing. You don’t get to stand behind me during Herbology anymore. I can’t risk you failing class because of me.”
Remus flushes bright red. “Shut up!”
Sirius grins. “Don’t worry, Moony mine. I’ll make sure you’ll have plenty of other opportunities to stare at my-”
Remus cuts him off with a kiss. “I hate you,” he mumbles against Sirius’s lips.
“Oh?” Sirius quirks one eyebrow. “I’ve heard rumours that say otherwise.”

Okay, so I think Wolfstar is one of the best ship names ever. It perfectly encompasses both of their characters, and fits so well together. However: padfoony.

(@wolfstarmicrofic It became Castle instead of Castles, hope that's okay!)
16th: Castle(s)
Hiding in an alcove with Sirius has left Remus in shock, and the girls need some details.
'Explore the Castle'
“Remus, you look as though you’ve seen a ghost.” Lily takes Remus by the shoulders and steers him towards the couch where she and the girls are sitting.
“Really?” Marlene asks, moving aside to make space for Remus. “I think he looks rather shocked.”
“That’s what I said, isn’t it?”
“No,” Marlene frowns. “You said he looks like he’s seen a ghost. Why would that shock him? It’ll be more shocking to not see one, with the way they flock all over the castle!”
“It’s an-” Lily shakes her head. “Nevermind.”
Mary leans forward in her chair. “Remus, what happened?”
“I... I was just with the others,” Remus says, gathering his thoughts. “We went to, uh... explore the castle.”
Lily purses her lips. Everyone knows by now that when The Marauders go and ‘explore the castle’, it’s synonym for planning a prank.
“So Prongs and Wormtail went to... explore the castle around the Slytherin common room, and Padfoot and I were hiding in an alcove, watching the hall to make sure no one was coming to, uh, see them explore the castle.”
“Did you blow up the Slytherin common room?” Dorcas asks, sounding hopeful.
“No, no,” Remus says. “Nothing like that. It’s just this thing that happened, that I wasn’t quite... expecting.”
All the girls stare at him expectantly.
Remus sighs. “Sirius kissed me.”
A beat of silence.
Then Mary slaps a hand over her mouth and shrieks. “Remus and Sirius! Together! Oh my, it’s what I never knew I needed!”
“Wow,” Amelia whispers admiringly. “Congratulations! I mean, sweet mother of Merlin, Sirius Black! Good for you, Remus good for you.”
“I never considered how cute you two are together!” Emmeline beams.
“Sirmus!” Dorcas says.
“Remius!” Marlene counters.
“Lupack? No, that sounds like a backpack brand.”
“Blapin?”
“That’s possibly even worse! Moonfoot?”
“Iew, that sounds like some kind of feet fungal infection.”
“Oh, gross you ruined it.”
“I know! Padfoony!”
“What kind of kiss was it?” Emmeline asks dreamily. “Was it chaste, one moment there, gone the next, leaving only the ghost of his touch like a memory of a dream, or was it more a gentle press of lips, like a wordless request, a gesture of hope and longing, conveyed only by the sweetness of his mouth, or was it an intense meeting of mouths, where you sank into the softness of his lips, perfectly slotting together in an act of long pent-up passion, or-”
“Did he stick his tongue down your throat?” Mary interrupts.
“Or that,” Emmeline shrugs.
“I mean, I suppose he is rather fit,” Lily sighs. “You could do worse. And maybe now you’ll be able to keep him in check a bit better.”
“A few steps back!” Remus holds up his hands. “As it is, Sirius and I are just friends...”
As Dorcas wiggles her eyebrows and says “Friends who occasionally explore the castle together?”, Remus has the feeling that ‘explore the castle’ is no longer synonym for planning a prank.
“You’re all getting way ahead of yourselves!” Remus protests. “Like, what does Sirius even want? He could’ve just been messing around, or having some fun, or he could’ve been experimenting for all I know! Merlin, I don’t even know what I want myself! I mean, do I really feel that way about Sirius?”
“Well, if you don’t...” Marlene begins. “You won’t mind if I ask him to go to the Ball with me next weekend, will you? I’ve always thought he looks so good in dress robes...”
Remus gives her an ice-cold stare. “I will hide your body in the Forbidden Forrest where no one will ever find it.”
Marlene, looking thoroughly unimpressed by the threat, gives him a smug smile. “Well, that answers the second question for you. As for the first,” She points over Remus’ shoulder. “I think we’re about to get an answer real soon.”
Remus turns around and sees Sirius walking up to them. He stops in front of Remus and smiles. Remus vaguely hears an excited shriek coming from Mary’s direction and some giggling from Amelia and Emmeline.
Sirius seems too focussed on him though, to be really noticing the girls’ reaction. “Hi,” he says.
“Hi,” Remus replies.
“So...” Sirius runs a hand through his hair. “I was wondering, and it is of course up to you, if maybe you’d like to go to the upcoming Ball with me, as my date?”
Several squeals and the sound of someone slapping someone’s arm in excitement sound behind Remus, but he barely notices. He just looks at Sirius, the slight flush on his cheeks, his hopeful smile, the warm look in his eyes... “Yeah,” Remus says. “Yeah, that’ll be nice. That sounds nice.”
“Brilliant!” Sirius beams and the room seems a little brighter.
Remus watches Sirius walk away. There’s a skip in his step and Remus’ chest does this weird fluttery thing. He sighs and rests his head in his hands. “Oh, Godric, help me!”
Lily pats him on the back sympathetically. “I’m afraid even Godric can’t help you now, Rem. You’re already too far gone.”

Lily and Mary want Remus to ask Sirius out, because what can go wrong? Well, don't underestimate the trainwreck that is Remus Lupin.

Get What He's Saying: Part Three
Mary has yet to stop laughing. “Five minutes! Every point, in five minutes! We thought you’d need a week, but no! Merlin, the boy is so gone for you.”
Remus gives Lily a look. “Why is she here?”
Lily shrugs. “I had to tell her why I needed her help, and now she’s invested.”
“Invested.”
Mary nods. “I want to see Padfoony happen.”
“Padfoony.”
“You’re the ones always using those weird nicknames,” Mary says.
Remus pinches the bridge of his nose. “You must be messing with me.”
“I don’t mess around when it comes to Padfoony,” Mary says, dead-serious.
“Okay, okay.” Lily claps her hands. “First thing first, we need to establish whether you like him back.”
“So we’re acting like it’s already a given that he likes me?”
Lily waves the checklist in Remus’ face. “It kind of is! Now, do you fancy the boy, or not?”
“I do,” Remus mutters under his breath. Then, in a louder voice, “But I still think it could all be some misunderstanding!”
“Only one way to find out,” Mary says. “Ask him out!”
Remus looks at her like she’s gone insane.
“Oh, come on, Lupin! You owe me!”
“Why on earth do I owe you?”
“I threw myself at a boy, who I knew would reject me, in the middle of a packed Great Hall, for everyone to see,” Mary says, pointing her finger accusingly at him. “All to help you get your shite together!”
Remus points out that he neither asked nor wanted Mary to do so, but to no avail.
“Ask him out! Ask him out! Ask him out!” Mary cheers.
“But what if you’ve been reading all the signs wrong?” Remus asks desperately.
“For argument’s sake,” “Lily sighs. “I’ll play along with you. Say it’s indeed a misunderstanding, what’s the worst thing that can happen?”
“Well,” Remus says, before continuing in one breath. “He could start feeling uncomfortable around me, and while trying to remain friends, he’ll inevitably start pulling away, and we’ll slowly grow apart and become estranged. Then, if we all go and fight dark wizards after school, like we’ve been talking about, we won’t really know each other anymore, and we won’t be able to trust each other. Thanks to us, our group will be infested with distrust, suspicion and false accusations. We’ll get all our friends killed, and ourselves too, if one doesn’t end up sending the other to Azkaban.”
Mary blinks at him.
Lily rubs her temples. “Remus... Even you have to admit that there are a whole lot more turns, turns that can and will go differently, between you telling Black you fancy him, and the eventual death and destruction of everything you hold dear. I meant, what’s the worst thing that can happen now?”
Remus hesitates. “He could laugh at me... Not want to be my friend anymore... And of course everyone will pick his side, and I’ll be friendless and alone for the rest of my-”
“Okay, stop!” Lily holds up her hand. “Let’s assume that’s the worst-case-scenario. That’ll only happen under the assumptions that everyone who thinks Black fancies you, which is probably eighty percent of the student population, is completely deluded, and Black himself, who hexes everyone who so much as looks at you wrong, suddenly turns out to be a major arsehole, and all your friends, even the ones who encouraged you to confess to Black, suddenly turn out to be major arseholes as well, just turning their backs on you. Again, for argument’s sake, let’s say it’s a possibility, then it’s a possibility with a very, very small chance of happening. The chance of all the signs and hints pointing to what they seem to be pointing to, on the other hand, is rather substantial. So, the question is, Remus Lupin, are you willing to take a very small risk if the prize is-”
“Sticking your tongue down Sirius Black’s throat!” Mary finishes.
“I was going to say date the man of your dreams, but yeah,” Lily shrugs.
Remus bites his lip. “I hate it when you go all logical on me. I suppose the risk is small, and the gain high...”
“Exactly!” Lily says, nudging him. “And as a certain pretty boy always says, what’s life without a little risk?”
What’s life without a little risk.
Well, a hell of a lot less stressful, that’s for sure, Remus thinks as he stands in front of Sirius. Lily and Mary, now also joined by James, staring at them in a very not-subtle way and basically giving Remus a thumbs-up, is definitely not helping his nerves.
Sirius looks at him with clear, silver-grey eyes, tilts his head to the side in that way that makes his hair fall over his shoulder and smiles at him. He has a nice smile. And nice hair. And nice eyes.
“Alright, Moony?” Sirius asks.
Remus takes a breath. He knows what to say. ‘Will you go out with me this weekend?’ Not a very complicated sentence. And he has even practiced it. It should come out easily. It should. But instead, Remus starts rambling.
“James was going out with Hestia, and claimed I wasn’t in a different league, and then he was acting all weird, so Lily made a list, and I only needed five minutes, and now I owe Mary-”
Sirius’ eyes, that had been large with confusion, narrow at the last part. “Mary?” He asks sharply. “What does Mary have to do with anything?”
“She’s apparently invested now,” Remus says lamely.
Sirius snorts. “She definitely seemed invested in you at breakfast this morning.” The next moment he seems to be sulking. “Look, if you’re here to ask my advice on Mary, don’t bother. She’s clearly into you, so if you want to date her, go for it, I’d say.”
“Go for it?” Remus repeats, finding himself getting annoyed as well, because of Sirius’ petulant behaviour, and the fact that he apparently thinks he should ‘go for it’ with Mary.
“Not that it matters what I think,” Sirius mutters, crossing his arms over his chest and staring at a point somewhere above Remus’ head.
“It doesn’t,” Remus says, in a harsher voice than he intended.
Sirius’ eyes snap back to Remus’ face. “Well, do whatever the hell you want, then.”
“I will!” Remus says, raising his voice. “And I don’t want to date Mary!”
“Then don’t date Mary!” Sirius is now also raising his voice.
“I won’t!”
“Good!”
“Good!”
For a moment, both boys are just standing there, staring angrily at each other.
Remus gives himself a shake. “Why are we talking about Mary?”
“You brought her up!”
“Because Mary wants me to date you!” Remus exclaims, before he can think about it.
Sirius’ eyes flash with anger. “Well, I don’t give a rat’s arse about what she wants!”
“So you don’t want to date me,” Remus states, his voice turning cold.
“Not as a favour to Mary bloody McDonald,” Sirius hisses.
“It’s not because Mary wants me to date you!” Remus shouts.
“Then why?”
“Because I want me to date you!”
“Fine!” Sirius exclaims. “Go out with me, then!”
“Oh no, you don’t!” Remus points an accusing finger in Sirius’ direction. “I gathered all my courage to ask you on a date, so don’t go switching it around on me and ask me out instead!”
Sirius throws his hands up in the air. “Alright! Bloody ask me out, then!”
“I bloody will!”
“Go ahead!”
“Will you go out with me this weekend?” Remus asks heatedly.
“Yes, I do!” Sirius bites back.
“Okay, great!”
“Great!”
Both boys storm off in the opposite direction.
“What...” Lily clears her throat. “What was that?”
“I...” James blinks uncertainly and runs a hand through his hear. “I think they’ve got a date?”

Remus can be oblivious, Remus can be a train wreck, and Remus can be both.
This will be the last part, with all cards on the table!
Read Part One here!
Read Part Two here!
Read Part Three here!
Get What He's Saying: The Final Part
Remus can’t sleep. He has been staring at the curtains around his bed for the past hour. It’s not strange that his palms are sweaty and his stomach is in knots, but he has to admit it isn’t just anticipation, but also nerves.
Tomorrow is a Hogsmeade day. Tomorrow is his date with Sirius. At least, he thinks it is. He’s not sure. There had been a lot of yelling. But he really thinks it ended with Sirius agreeing to go on a date with him?
Remus sighs. Like worrying about how the date will go wasn’t enough, now he has added worrying whether the date even exists to that.
Suddenly, Remus hears his curtains rustle, and feels a dip in his bed. He pushes himself up on his elbows to see Sirius sitting cross-legged at the foot of his bed. He’s wearing the loose-fitted shirt with the deep V-neckline he sleeps in, and with the braid hanging over one shoulder and his silver eyes illuminated by the soft moonlight, he looks ethereal, making Remus wonder whether he has fallen asleep after all and is currently dreaming.
Sirius smiles sheepishly. “Hi.”
“Hi.”
“So,” Sirius says, subconsciously tugging at his braid. “Do we happen to have a date tomorrow, or did I imagine that?”
Remus huffs a laugh. “Honestly, I don’t even know if this isn’t a dream. Oi!” Remus exclaims, quickly pulling his legs back as Sirius pinches his calf.
“Now you know you’re not dreaming,” Sirius grins.
Remus gives Sirius a brief glare, and then folds his legs underneath him, so he too is sitting up.
A silence falls, in which the boys only stare at each other awkwardly.
“I, eh... I’m sorry I yelled at you,” Sirius eventually says, breaking the silence.
“Yeah,” Remus says. “I’m sorry I yelled at you too.”
Sirius chuckles. “We’re really quite bad at this, aren’t we?”
Remus can’t help but also laugh. “A train wreck, I believe Lily called it.”
“Alright,” Sirius says, suddenly turning serious. “All cards on the table.” He takes a deep breath. “Obviously, I’ve been flirting with you for quite a while.”
“Yes,” Remus says slowly. “So people have been telling me...”
“Well, Prongs said I actually had to take it up another notch. He said you were so oblivious that he shouted in your face that I fancy you, and you still didn’t catch on.” Sirus rolls his eyes. “Greatly exaggerating, as he does, of course.”
Remus doesn’t reply, not feeling like letting Sirius know James wasn’t exaggerating by much. Or, well, at all.
“But of course, that moment at breakfast I went way too far, brushing your hair away like that and then complementing your eyes..." Sirius actually blushes, and stares down at his hands. “I was so obviously throwing myself at you, I didn’t give you the option to ignore it any longer.”
Remus also decides not to inform Sirius that, hadn’t it been for Lily’s list, he still wouldn’t have noticed anything to make him even consider the possibility that Sirius Black would fancy him. Maybe he should consider changing his name into Remus Oblivious Lupin.
“So after you asked me out,” Sirius continues, toying with his braid again. “I started thinking you only did so because you pity me. And since you were talking about James and Lily, and bloody Mary McDonald apparently, I thought maybe you were only asking because they had been pushing you.”
“I do pity you, and I would’ve never asked if James, Lily and Mary hadn’t been pushing me,” Remus says.
Sirius’ face pales, and he makes a jerky motion as if he wants to jump off the bed. He looks decidedly hurt.
Merlin, Remus really is a train wreck. He wonders if Remus Oblivious Train wreck Lupin would be too long...
“No, wait!” Remus catches Sirius’ wrist before he can dissappear. “I meant to say, I pity you for fancying me. You’re Sirius Black! Everyone wants you! And why wouldn’t they? You’re brave, clever, funny, and so incredibly gorgeous. And you’d choose someone like me? I’m just... me. And I never would’ve asked you out if our friends hadn’t pushed me, because I never would’ve believed someone like you would ever say yes to someone like me.”
Remus is relieved that the hurt is gone from Sirius’ face. He feels like an idiot for saying all that, but he’d rather feel like an idiot than hurt Sirius’ feelings. He’s just afraid that this is the moment Sirius will come to his senses, and realise that yes, this was a stupid idea and he can indeed do much better.
“Are you kidding me?” Sirius asks. “I mean, yes, you’re just you, but by being you, you are the best person I know! Your incredibly kind-heartedness in combination with your wicked sense of humour is simply irresistible. The only flaw I can find in you, is that you constantly underestimate how wonderful you are!”
Remus blinks at him. “You really mean it.” It’s not a question.
“I do,” Sirius confirms anyway. “What about you? If you forget about that whole ‘you deserve better than me’-nonsense, do you actually want to date me?”
“Date you?” Remus exclaims. “Sirius, I want to marry you!”
This time, it’s Sirius’ turn to blink.
“That is...” Remus mumbles, awkwardly running a hand through his hair. “I don’t mean... Not like tomorrow or something...”
A bright smile appears on Sirius’ face. “My, my, Mr Lupin,” he says teasingly. “That’s rather forward of you. If you want to put a ring on this finger, you’re going to have to make me your boyfriend first.”
Remus can only wordlessly open and close his mouth.
Sirius lowers his voice to a whisper. “But who knows, if you play your cards right tomorrow.” Suddenly, he leans in and presses a soft kiss at the corner of Remus’ mouth. And just like that, he’s off Remus’ bed and tiptoeing back to his own.
Remus lets himself fall back on his pillow, wide-eyed staring up at the wooden frame above his bed, carefully touching his fingertips to the place where just seconds ago, Sirius’ lips have been.
“Remus Oblivious Train wreck Lupin,” he whispers to himself. “You better play your cards right tomorrow.”
Lily searches the Hogsmeade High Street, quickly scanning the various cottages, shops and groups of laughing students. Besides her, Chase Danes is talking about some essay he’s been writing for Transfiguration. Or was it Charms? She probably should’ve been paying more attention. Danes is good-looking, smart, mature, and... incredibly boring.
“Excuse me for a moment,” Lily says, interrupting Danes in the middle of a sentence, as her eyes land on a messy mop of dark hair, sticking out above the crowd. She pushes through the crowd to make her way over to James. A huge smile breaks out on his face the moment he sees her approach. Lily is barely aware she’s returning his smile, or of the harsh glare Hestia Jones is giving her.
“Have you heard anything?” She asks, the moment she’s standing in front of James.
He shakes his head. “No. I just know they left together around eleven. They were acting completely normal at breakfast.”
“Well, at least they weren’t yelling at each other anymore,” Lily mutters.
James opens his mouth to reply, but stops when they see a figure rushing towards them in almost a run. Mary is panting when she reaches them, doubling over with her hands on her knees to catch her breath.
“Do you know anything?” Lily asks impatiently.
Mary straightens, and by the huge grin on her face Lily can tell that it’s good news. “According to my sources,” she says, looking like the cat that got the cream. “Padfoony has been spotted snogging outside of Tomes and Scrolls!”
Lily lets out a delighted shriek and, as a spur of the moment thing, flings her arms around James’ neck.
Mary smirks. Operation Padfoony has been a roaring success. Time to get Operation Lames on the way.

Reblogging for World Animal Day, like I didn't post it just two days ago.
Try not to eat any animals today!
Almost World Animal Day, so here's a short Wolfstar dog-related fic!
Nothing but fluff and humour.
“Oh?” Sirius smiles. “I’ve heard rumours that say otherwise.”
