Alright.
I h a v e to know what Padak is about XD
Oh... Oh you sweet summer child, you don't know?
Well I'm glad I can tell you instead of you like, stumbling on this movie and having all of it jump out at you XD
Ok ok, I genuinely love this film and I'll admit, I really want to take a moment to geek out about it. But that would involve in me getting into spoiler territory. So, in case you decide to look for this film yourself, I'll just give you the generalized story here.
The movie is about a lone mackerel, later in the film named Padak for trying to 'padak padak her way to her death' (she jumped out of the tank and was flip flopping on the ground. I'm guessing Padak is Korean for Flip-Flop? It's a good thing this film wasn't Australian, or else she'd be named Thong. I'm sorry) is fished out of the sea and dropped into a tank at a local restaurant, and has to escape back to home, all while trying to convince her new tank-mates to escape with her. Simple plot, right? Well... Here's a quote from the YouTube review that introduced me to Padak that pretty much sums up the whole movie perfectly.
"Imagine if you took the fish tank setting from Finding Nemo and mixed it with the graphic violence from Watership Down, drizzled it in the depressing tone of Plague Dogs, and gave it a garnish of that sushi scene from The Isle of Dogs. That's basically this film on a plate."
Steve Reveiws, Padak
Now, why is the sushi scene prevalent? Because this film takes place in a Korean restaurant where their food is as fresh as possible. Meaning that the fish are prepared and even eaten while still alive. And this film pulls zero punches in showing the horrors of this kind of delicacy (no, I'm serious. A fish is literally cut up and dissected on screen. This movie takes off the kid gloves and throws them in the God damn incinerator). So yeah, there are a lot of images in this film that will be upsetting to veiwers. But this film isn't gorey just for the sake of gore. It tells a genuinely very sad story and will wring out emotions from your heart, and can also be breathtaking with its musical and 2D animated segments.
I'd recommend checking out this reveiw before trying to find the film, though. Even if watching a reveiw is not at all like watching the movie, this guy does censor some of the more extreme gore (like the scene I mentioned above). He doesn't censor all of it, but I think this video is still the best introduction to this movie.
However, if you want to check out the movie, I could only find it on this website https://online.potlockermovies.com/full-movie/padak/ it's free, and it does have English subtitles (the movie doesn't have an English dub), but there are a lot if pop up adds and it's probably going to get frustrating clicking off of them, but this site was still the best I could find to watch Padak.
It's interesting to note that this film does not go in the direction you might expect it to. If it weren't for the fact that I had watched the video above before the movie itself, I would have been just as shocked with how it ended and what happened to our characters as Steve was. But at the same time, the film does establish right away that it's going for more... For lack of a better term, realistic approach. So although the film goes in an unexpected direction, it's also hard to say that it cheated you out of your time to view it.
Again, to try to keep this as spoiler free as possible, I'm only going to sum up the third act in lyrics from the last song of the movie that speaks mountains once you realize it.
Destiny tricks us like fools.
He also gives off a kind of viscious cunning vibe in the movie? Like he's the second in command character that's a bit of a bastard. I think you might like him if you watch this movie. And the old Flatfish who is 'The Master' of the tank.
Oh yeah also, there's this eel (who I think is named Anago? Or Jooldom? His name is never mentioned in the film, however the video above calls him Jooldom, and I've seen people on this site argue his name is meant to be Anago. There isn't much information for this movie online, unfortunately.) who everyone wants to become the next tumblr sexyman. All because of his voice. To be fair, it is a nice voice.

A new 9 fic idea! (Featuring stitchpunk OCs based on the cast of Padak)
9, 7, 3 and 4 are ready to settle down after their victory. Things seem peaceful until 5 staggers into the Library carrying a legless 2, both very much alive. As the other fallen ragdolls awaken, brought back by the life-giving rain, it soon becomes apparent that they are not alone: Other dolls, created by the Scientist’s Apprentices, have been hiding in a derelict school, while the last two to be created have just left the house of their creators. There is also a surviving Beast out there, intent on carrying out the Fabrication Machine’s mission once and for all...
Original Characters
Pi (π)
A spirited stitchpunk who thinks fondly of humans. She and her brother are inspired to set out into the Emptiness when 9′s group finds them while searching for 6. She believes that there is hope for the world.
Root (√)
Pi’s brother. He’s a bit more cautious than his sister, but overtime he learns how to be brave.
Nabla (∇)
The first created by the Scientist’s Apprentices. The other stitchpunks in his group respect him for his advice helping them survive in the Emptiness, earning 1′s respect. In actuality, Nabla’s all talk, but he still has lines he would not cross.
Asterisk (∗)
A particularly apathetic stitchpunk who plays second-hand to Nabla. Compared to the others, he is, at worst, creepy, mostly minding his own business. However, he has his own agenda. He is the one who abducts 6 to the School.
Sigma (Σ)
A childlike stitchpunk who is the first one in the School to truly listen to Pi and 6. He may be cute, but he's pretty eager to fight if he gets the chance.
Tilde (∼)
A stitchpunk who enjoys being right all the time. Deep down, he truly cares about his friends.
Equal (⋕)
A sarcastic female stitchpunk who usually takes potshots at all of the other dolls, except for Nabla.
Bow (⋈)
A lazy green stitchpunk who never speaks unless someone urges him to do so.
Percent (%)
A female stitchpunk whom Nabla loved. She gave nothing but words of encouragement to him and even taught him how to survive all without losing hope of escaping, only to die unceremoniously at the claws of the Crab.
Operator (⊚)
A wandering stitchpunk. He knows he's going to die sooner or later and doesn't care one bit. He mocks Nabla's cowardice.
The Crab
A Beast created in the image of a crab. It is hellbent on reviving its master no matter what.

PADAK AU
WARNING SPOILERS:
Tumblr media
Here’s an idea I had for an AU I had in my mind lately. What if ‘The Master’ Flatfish saved Padak from getting caught by one of the humans in the sushi shop and they both escaped together? And I wanted to give my girl Padak a happy ending, and I been rooting for her to escape. Also, I wanted to give the flatfish a bit more character development than he had in the film.
It would take place after ‘The Master’ Flatfish got spared and put back in the tank because the customer wanted mackerel instead. Padak would had been about to be taken away to be eaten, but “The Master” decided to change for the better to save someone who had hope. He jumps out of the tank which would hit the man (the owner) in the face as a distraction and fallen over causing him to drop Padak and the net and the man falling down. She was surprised that the flatfish done that, would had given her the chance to escape from the tank.
The scene on the AU would be similar to the original ending but it had the two fish escaping to sea together. Padak this time had more determination and pushed herself even more, as they were near the edge of the dock of the restaurant. Flatfish still got stopped grabbed by the owner, but Padak was hesitant of jumping to the water because she didn’t want to leave him behind. Flatfish tried to tell Padak to go,so she successfully jumped and felt guilt of going on without him and thought he didn’t make it. It was until she found out he survived and caught up with her.
“You made it! I thought you were gone! Come on, I have so much to show you!”
(He still uses that little sword to escape the restaurant owner’s hand and cut his finger.)
There! I got that outta my chest, I hope you guys like the AU! ^^

(And only now do I realise how much more practice I need drawing fish in my style - I don't draw them very often. XD ) Ever since I watched the Korean animated film Padak a few weeks ago, I felt like I wanted to draw some fanart of it, so here we go.  Unfortunately, it seems that the YouTube upload of the film has been taken down, but I'm sure there are other uploads of the full film online.  I know a lot of people discovered the film after watching Steve's Review of it (the film came out in 2012 but it wasn't until he posted his review that it began to gain a LOT more attention), but I had never heard of him before watching the film - I had just come across this random clip of a mackerel chowing down on clownfish, and that caught my attention.... the clip was called 'Found Nemo', in case you're wondering. 😅 As for my thoughts on the film, I think it is a pretty well made film, I really love the animation, music (the songs are all fantastically sung) and the characters of Padak, Spotty, The Master and Jooldom (and I think it goes without saying that I still have a bit of a crush on Jooldom due to his song and suave way of talking 😳 ), but when it comes to the tone of the film itself, while I did think it was really well made, like films like When The Wind Blows, I'm not entirely sure it can be a film one can say they 'enjoy watching' due to how disturbing and sad the film can get. I will say though that tone wise the film is pretty much like a combination of Finding Nemo and Plague Dogs..... And yes, I do think it manages to get as disturbing and sad as Plague Dogs does. 😭  So if you're alright with checking out an animated film which manages to be unsettling (and does it well rather than being gratuitous) I recommend it, as the film did manage to make me feel for the characters going through their plight. Also, one thing that I learned while looking into this film is that, at first, I thought that the fish being alive while they were being prepared/eaten was just something that was put in for artistic license and/or (effective) shock value, but I found out that, to my horror, this is a REAL method of preparing fish.... ikuzukuri....😨  and I was pretty horrified when I discovered this.  And yes, this method of cooking is just as controversial as you would expect it to be, and while fish is one of my favourite food groups, I would NEVER want to eat anything that was served to me ALIVE - it doesn't matter what food I eat, just as long as they're prepared humanely..... For these reasons, as well as the film being from the fish's perspective managing to make it pretty horrific from their eyes, the fact that there exists a REAL method of serving fish WHILE THEY'RE ALIVE, it suits the horror elements rather well.  The whole film feels like a version of that infamous PeTA PSA about fish that actually knows what it's doing and is nowhere near as ridiculous. 😂

Jooldom’s from the Ocean too (SPOILERS)
So the various species of eel in the fish market have not been able to be bred in captivity. This has led to massive decline in their wild numbers, so as to be considered an unsustainable food-source. Babies are taken from the wild and grown up in captivity until they reach the size to be eaten.
I think this is what happened to Jooldom. Rather than him being caught as an adult, it’s more likely he was caught as a youngster and grown up in captivity, hence not having the same drive to escape as Padak, even though he stands the best chance at escaping out of all the fish. He also seems to lack Padak’s extensive knowledge of the sea, since he was caught from a young age, he wouldn’t have learned and remembered much.
This, imo, adds a layer of depth to his character.
He hardly interacts with the other fish, yet he has taken a position of second-in-command beside the supposed wise “ocean-caught” Master that no-doubt reminded him of home. Teaching him things he should’ve been taught had he not been captured as a child, like how starfish have 50 fins! He respected him. When he hears that Padak is from the ocean, the camera focuses on him during the reveal, opening his eyes from a nap with clear interest in what he was hearing. He also seemed to have developed a creepy “fondness” for Padak, insisting that she share her knowledge of the ocean, even singing a song about it.
He also maliciously toys with old Master’s feelings when Spotty is killed, taunting him for lying about being from the ocean, probably harboring feelings of betrayal that someone he looked up to as a “fellow ocean fish” that can teach him was lying the whole time. Then there’s Master calling him a “sea eel” and he suddenly stops.
Still figuring precisely what species he is. I’m leaning towards the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica), primarily due to its prevalence in those waters and in the market, and also to his distinctly Japanese name (Anago) in the original Korean version. Could also be a conger eel. *shrugs*
Just a ramble.

Final Padak observation of the night
Rewatching it a second time I picked up on a conversation I missed the first time between the Master and Jooldom (the eel). One that implies that Jooldom is from the sea and is the one who told the Master about the “big fish eats a smaller one” fallacy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was from the sub on Asiancrush. Is this a mistranslation or am I just taking this the wrong way it was intended?
If it’s true that implies a lot about Jooldom and how truly neutral he is compared to the other fish...I mean you know OUTSIDE of what he does in this scene.
