Timed Writing Challenge
So a group of friends and I just did a challenge together! We were given a prompt, spent 10 minutes planning, and 30 minutes writing a short story based on it. Here's what I came up with!
Prompt was: Sleeping during danger; a place where it is comfortable to be alone
Night is falling upon the world around them. The weary adventurers trudge forward towards streetlights in the distance, beckoning them to safety. They carry the weight of their treasures rightly earned. They enter the village and head towards a warmly lit building. A sign with the words “Eagle’s Haven” hangs above the door. They enter and ask for two rooms. They split in pairs and lay their belongings and themselves to rest.
Matthias awakes to the sound of scratching at the window. He drowsily sits up in his bed. His roommate, Paavu, wakes up too. Paavu goes to the window to look outside and groans. “Damn gremlins.. They followed us here!” Sure enough, outside the window was a group of goblins. The same group of goblins they had raided just hours before. The one by the window breaks the glass with a swift swing of a club. Another window breaks in the next room. The screams of their startled friends follows.
Matthias rushes out of bed and towards his bag. He gets hold of his crossbow and starts firing bolts at the goblins flooding into the window. Paavu grabs the closest goblin and slings it behind him. It crashes into the door, breaking it into pieces. He runs back to grab his bag and heads out the door. “Come on,” he yells. “We can’t let them stay here, we have to draw them away.”
Matthias then gets up, quickly tosses his bag over his shoulder, and heads out. He looks over to see Vee and Ash fleeing their room, weapons and magic in hand. They head out the door of the inn shouting apologies to the owners and guests. The group leaves the city too, not wanting anyone else to get hurt in any crossfire.
The goblins follow suit, wanting an encore of their last battle. The adventurers oblige. Paavu the Strong begins attacking the monsters in twos bare-handed, slinging them against each other, sending them flying. Ash dual wields their scimitars, slicing the monsters into bits, twirling their swords in a silvery dance. Vee sends bursts of nature’s worst towards her enemies, launching a storm of fire, lightning, and hail their way. Matthias draws his rapier, which glows in a green flame, and gracefully ends his foes one by one. As day breaks through the horizon, the last enemy is slain. The night’s curtain falls as the final act meets its end.
Matthias groggily awakes from his sleep. He sits up from his grassy bed, stretching wide. “Good morning Pav.” He looks up to see his friends tired and bloodied, along with the war-torn scene. “What happened?” He’s only met with stares and sighs.

I want to start this entry by saying fuck spiders, I don’t swear. But fuck spiders.
I have also since realized that the world is more dangerous then I had originally thought. and having a healthy fear of dragons big or small is needed, if it wasn't for the people I was on this quest with, I wouldn’t be writing this entry. I would be 6ft below the ground right now. I should probably mention to the people that I travel with that I would prefer my body to be burned rather than left to rot in the ground.
But I'm still here and I'm still standing which I am grateful for, I still have to build the church and hospital for this town. But let me get to the adventure we did go on.
We started our quest in the guild hall where Paavu pointed us in the direction of the blacksmith Saedrick. Our quest was to clear out the creatures in Saedrick’s mine in the mountains to the north.
Once we had met the blacksmith in his house forge? we found out that the trip was a two day trip away from the town and that’s walking. A two day walk with Valentina, Ithus ,Wennock, Dharcius and Alfr. Three people that I have traveled with before, a warlock and another Cleric but of the fighting type. I mean at least Valentina is here so I have another female to talk to. After gathering more information from Saedrick like the mine is separated into 3 main portions and one that we were told to leave alone and now I understand why. But i’ll get to that.
The First leg of the trip was North west along the rolling planes with tall standing grass. on our trip we were attacked. By not 1 not 2 but 4 Ankhegs. Wennock and Dharcius were the first targets being attacked from below, grappled in there pincer like grip as they harmed our friends. 2 more dug out of the ground and attacked. During this time Valentina revealed a set of bony wings, they were beautiful but also scary at the same time. During the fight, we almost lost two of our members. But we survived, thankfully. Unknown to us, this wouldn’t be our last deadly encounter for this adventure.
After our first near death encounter we continued North to the mountains. We did stop for the night and it went by uneventfully. The next day of trekking towards the mines was windy With the last leg of travel before reaching the mines I had a chance to talk with Valentina as the men kept guard. She’s sweet, and almost motherly, something i only every got from the priestesses at the temple. I wonder if my birth mother even cared about me. She did abandon me after all. Anyways, we reached the mines with no further issues; when we arrived the sun was begging to set and the party was tired from our journey. Looking around some of us noticed a small hut outside the cave entrance. It was more of a shed than a hut but it looked big enough for 2 and made for great cover and privacy Valentina and I took advantage of this and slept peacefully out of the wind. Whilst the males of our group kept watch.
The next morning we set off into the mines, and all way going well until we found out that Wennock and Alfr couldn’t see anything. This is interesting, I knew that there were some races that couldn’t see in the dark, and I mean I knew about humans. But it’s unlucky for those who can’t. We went slowly, to help those who can’t see. Dharcuis volunteered to move first and scout ahead. Where we came across 2 small slime like creatures and took them out without difficulty.
The path forward was a fork and we had to choose where we would go left or right. Valentina had asked me “hey dear would you like to come with little ol me and look down the right path quickly” I went along with her and we snuck down the path, the others noticed and followed shortly behind. We spent a good while making our way around the curving nature of the caves. A small mine shaft off to the side of the path lead to a hole descending so deep we couldn’t see the bottom. I lit a torch and dropped it down the shaft, where it landed with a small thud about 150 ish ft down. This is most likely the area we were warned about. We continued around the bends and with a large Smack of a great club Ithus was attacked by a large humanoid creature waiting around one of the corners. As 2 ogres were down within this section of the mine. They weren’t much of a problem for our party as we brought them down with great haste. In this section of the cave there were many corpses of kobolds one of which was holding a note.
“Go to the Northwest kobold Camp, Support them and back them up” Mugrunden Esterlyn
Mugrunden Esterlyn someone who we have heard about time and time again. He irritates me to be honest. Thankfully it seems these ogres helped a future problem. We made our way back to the cave we went to through the other section and then we were done with the mine. The path was short and with some quick scouting it was noticed that 5 strange retile insect like creatures where around the corner just wandering, waiting. After thinking of a plan we made our move, only to have them burst out of the wall infront of me. Reptilian Spiders. Fuck anything spider like. Valentina Set of a very loud spell that cause some sections of the cave to collapse thankfully we didn’t suffer any major problems. We finally killed the 5 spider things 1 larger beast and 4 smaller ones. At last we cleaned the mines. Even though Valentina and i wanted to leave it was decided that we take a quick look down the shaft before we head home.
Using some rope and a grappling hook i wove them a double braided rope about 80ft long and was decided since Valentina was the lightest that she would be lowered down. At some point she wanted to come back up that was until she head a voice. From her report the voice has called out “hello whos there, have you come for me”. Her name was Astrin. Valentina didn’t trust the Astrin so she had come up and swapped with Ithus and Wennock. The boys went lower than Valentina had and this was a mistake that shouldn't have happened. Because I was father back making sure the rope was secure i didnt see what happened. But after reading Valentina’s report. I should have been closer to help out.
From Valentina’s Report
Getting lower then I wanted to go wennock was about 20ft from the bottom where he was able to see this woman’s expression change from a shy to a smile holding out her hand and with a minor flash of arcane energy she said “come join me” wennock had been charmed. I was hearing ithus panic from up top unable to get a good grasp on what they were seeing. Ithus did what he could to break the charm and with some success they begin racing back up the rope to get away from this thing. Which it didn’t like. Using what I can only consider through some arcane knowledge a spell known as hold person as wennock froze in place on the rope. And this woman’s form became fluid in its nature as another slimy form sped up the rope getting just above wennock. All of us took action me included.
This was also apparently when Valentina figured out that Wennock is one of her three kids, Two of which she had apparently abandoned and the third that had died in a fire. When she realized this she shouted down the shaft “stay away from my son you bitch”
The creature which had a long slimy rope like tendril descending all the way back down. As this entity finally made its true presence know a large bubbling slimy mess with faces shifting around almost like its screaming over and over within itself as An Adult Oblex was attacking us. In fear we did everything we could to escape, and we just managed to. Wennock finally back up. Valentina had used her Bony wings again to bring fear to the creature. After this we were left alone. And we raced out as fast as we could for the cave exit. Wennock hid in the shed for a few hours as we waited until dusk to rest. But little did we know, staying would be our final mistake of this quest.
The first six hours went by uneventfully. but as we were about to leave I noticed a glint of red over the horizon and was met by the flapping of wings. And in an attempt to escape the wrath of a young red dragon we ran back into the cave. I dont remember what happened after aside from being waking up with Ithus standing over me. Burns down the left side of his face. We spent the night in the cave, barely sleeping while the dragon flew around outside and knowing the danger that lurked within. After we thought the dragon had left, we book it back to town. Coming across a group of horses and something flying in the distance.
I'm now very wary of what's to the north and I fear for what may happen in the future.
Faithfully

Pongal celebration, Pongal shopping list
What is Pongal festival? Pongal festival is celebrated widely among Tamil nadu people, devoted to Sun god. It is also celebrated in the places where ever Tamil people are living - like Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Sri Lanka, US, UK etc;.
Wishing all my reader and follower friends a Happy Pongal! I am not going to write the basic details about pongal festival, please check wikipedia if you want to know about the basics of the festival. Even Though it is celebrated by all the tamils, it's not the same way it is celebrated by every family. Each family, each household have different way, traditions that is followed. I did not even realize my in-laws family had a different way of celebrating from the way at my mom's place.
After I got married, I haven't been there to celebrate pongal with them. So every year, my mami ask me to visit them when it's pongal. But usually Aj will have cyclic test and won't be able to make it. Last time when they visited, I requested them to come here to Singapore to celebrate the festival. So last year (2018), my mama, mami came here for celebration along with my two other brothers-in-law family🙂. Last year, I could learn a bit from my mami what is our custom and traditions to be followed. First I was little nervous on how I would manage all the things, Vj gave me confidence and told since many people are there, they will all do their part and no need to worry. As he said, While I concentrated only in the cooking part, I got all the help from my co-sisters, mami to prepare for the poojai. I just concentrated on cooking for the entire family along with pongal keeping. Before I go through the way we celebrate pongal, if you are looking for pongal recipes, click here for the pongal recipes. Disclaimer: This is just how we celebrate pongal festival at our household. Please check with your respective family elders to follow your traditions. I just wanted to share and keep a record of how we celebrate pongal festival. Though the customs and traditions are changing according to our convenience, availability, I just wanted to keep it written for my future reference. Let me also share the pongal shopping list/ checklist.
Shopping list for pongal:

Coconut
Grocery checklist
Moong dal
Raw rice
Jaggery (preferably paagu vellam)
Ghee
Oil
Cashews
Cardamom
Nutmeg, edible camphor
Milk
Let's start with how we celebrate pongal. First and foremost, they figure out when is the Tamil month 'Thai' exactly born, by referring panjangam. We use paambu panjangam (பாம்பு பஞ்சாங்கம்) for referring all such timings for festivals etc. Whenever the month is born, my FIL or MIL takes bath and lit's lamp. The lamp is also not the usual ones, its called madakku (மடக்கு) - large lamp made out of mud. So let me start how we celebrate pongal festival: Soak 1/2 cup - 3/4 cup raw rice, grind to a smooth paste in liquid form to draw maakolam (மாக்கோலம்). Draw a kolam at entrance of the house. You can refer my parents blog learnkolam.net for pongal kolams. Here's what my mami drew last year.
Draw kolam as shown below in three places. One at the regular pooja place, one for veetu deivam and one for Surya bagavan. So total three places. My mami drew these kolams last year.
Here are the lamps cleaned and kept ready for the poojai. The brass vilakku is my paati's and the other are respective from our mom's house.
In the pooja place wall, using avarai ilai (broad beans leaf or pungai ilai) crush and make a rectangle using the dye from the leaf. 7 rows of 7 dots are kept each in one different item and colour.
Black - kan mai (kaajal) or sago saandhu
Red - kum kum
White - kola maavu (rice we ground)
Green - Same leaf but darker shade
Viboodhi
Sandhanam
Manjal
We use cardboard to do as we do not have white wall at pooja place. So either we can keep the cardboard for the upcoming festivals or can also create new ones. I already tried to check with my family why we do it and the reason behind to understand better, but there's no much information available. So I have to check with other elders when I visit India and enlighten myself.
This setup is for two places- one at regular pooja place and one for veetu deivam. Last year, my co-sister helped me drawing this and cleaning pooja vessels with me. Prepare one wooden plank - wash and dry. Draw kolam over it too and let all kolams dry. A big agal vilakku (madakku - large lamp made out of mud) is tied around decoratively with a white thread. It is called thaai vilakku (தாய் விளக்கு) Which represents the late daughter-in-law of the house (here, my father-in-law's mom).
In the wooden plank, raw rice is spread preferably new fresh harvest rice (புது அரிசி). Keep the thaai vilakku in the middle. Keep one lamp (brought by the daughters-in-law during their marriage) each for the daughters-in-law around the thaai vilakku. So here, one for my mom-in-law, one for me, two more - one each for my co-sisters, as I have two co-sisters. So total 5. After my Mom-in-law, I have to take all these traditions and follow it. That time, the thaai vilakku will be for my Mom-in-law. And the tradition goes on.
The wick (thiri nool) for these vilakku is not the regular cotton wick we use. There is a thread called ''paavu thiri" (பாவு திரி) and we have to count in 50s or 100s. Take required length of the thread and cut. first tied a knot on the top. Then like we plait our hair, divide into three and make a plait. End it and tie a knot to secure. This is used same way for all the lamps. My grandfather used to run this thread 108 times in Padi, and it is then taken out, plaited to wick. But my father-in-law takes counts of thread, measures length and plaits the wick as these days padi is not available at homes as well as madakku. So this wooden plank is kept in front of the regular pooja place, over the kolam we drawn earlier. In front of this arrangement, a thalai vazhai ilai (Full banana leaf) is spread. Over which, 5 or 7 betel nuts & leaves, coconut, flower on top of the leaf, vegetables like raw banana, broad beans, sweet potato, arbi (seppankizhangu), yam (pidi karanai) are kept in sets, the same count as above.
So once the lamp is lit by the eldest in the family (take bath and lit with wet veshti/ towel), Make ready the pongal pot by decorating it. Viboodhi pattai, kunguma pottu is kept. Manjal and ginger is tied around the neck of the brass pot (vengala panai). One panai, each for sweet pongal and ven pongal. The pongal pot should be full, so buy the pot accordingly. My mom in law used a thread and inserted a piece of manjal and ginger in it, tied around the pot. So you might not see much. Seems she does this usually to avoid the leaves catching fire while cooking.
The stove should be clean and can be decorated with kolam. The whole day, everyone in the family should do fasting. Only after pongal, we can have food. Menu to be cooked :
Payatham paruppu (South Indian style moong dal)
A thayir pachadi
A sweet pachadi
2 poriyals - I made vazhakkai poriyal, avarakkai poriyal
7 kari kootu
Pongal sambar with payatham paruppu (moong dal)
Apart from ven pongal (to be consumed instead of regular rice) and sweet pongal.
All the menu prepared uses fresh turmeric, fresh ground spices and no onion or tomato, using only the 7 vegetables.
After the above cooking part is done, including the pongals, we start poojai. At each place (3 places) - a pair of kuthu vilakku is lit. In front of it, over the kolam drawn, keep a plate with a pair of vethalai, paaku, coconut, a pair of banana.
In front of main pooja place, 5 banana leaves (One thalai vazhai ilai and 4 edu) is spread. Usually 7 is done, but now a days, we cannot consume all these as the family is smaller than the earlier days. So we did 3 at each place according to the number of family members.
In each leaf, ven pongal, sweet pongal are kept, patted using water and made dent in the middle. Add a slice of banana, a small piece of jaggery over it. Pour a tsp of ghee.
Keep all the cooked items too in order.
First the regular place is done with poojai. Later, veetu deivam and surya bahavan should be offered at the same time, so me and Mom in law did together simultaneously.
Once the pooja is done, offered to crow, we all enjoy the food. We all sat on the floor and had food together. It was great experience last year and I was just imagining how the festival would have been celebrated those days earlier in our households where they had their own cultivation lands, cattles, cows and a very large (joint) family😃.
