one thing i think is really neat about persona fanfics is that like. everyone characterizes the mcs slightly differently. tbf everyone is gonna characterize every character differently but it's most noticeable with the mcs. and yet they're all accurate, i don't think i've ever seen an interpretation of any of the mcs that mischaracterizes them, even if it's not how i'd personally write them. i just think it's neat. :3

grim being a selfish brat is the point of his character arc. when you're told to claw for your survival in a prestigious yet hostile magical academy, when you're told that the weak must obey the strong, of course you're going to make use of what little advantages are given to you. that means demanding your henchman to do your every bidding and taking any opportunity to prove your strength.

kindness, consideration, compassion, empathy - they don't have a place in NRC. or so it seems.

the great thing about him starting the story with an obnoxious and abrasive personality is in how he awkwardly navigates his first ever friendships. in the sweetness of the rare scene where kinship just clicks for him, where his boasts and complaints become banter, where he feels like he gets to belong, to have a home.

and there's something deeply tragic about grim too, the fact that he's going to be left alone when yuu returns to their original world. what will happen to his student status? will he have to move out of the ramshackle dormitory? can he make it through his studies without you at his side?

when the first person who gave you kindness leaves, what are you supposed to do? will you say goodbye or will you fight to keep them?

When everyone was saying Will was a p3mc clone I was like lmao no you unenlightened masses Will is an Ai Wonder Egg Priority clone. Their eyes are even in the same spot. Ai got isekaied, transitioned, and a tan after running around in the desert for a week.

WILL IS A SERPH CLONE. They never got over having to make DDS2 without Godai. Hythlodeus V crashing the funeral Jenna Angel style wasn't just coincidentally similar it was an active call back. Sanctist church outfits lookin like Karma Temple outfits and hexagon skill attainment menu and transforming into big monsters and I'm sitting with my head in my hands. The QDS remake I asked for is MRF. Rip out your heart. Break giant eggs. Gender isn't real. Schrodinger is here. Become non-binary

I. I have to make the video essay about QDS at this point. I need people to understand. QDS 3-5 is probably never getting officially translated but MRF is so clearly echoing the same character journeys. GRIUS. IS LUPA

been involving myself in p3r lately & something i really enjoy about it over p5r is the uniformity of the cast & how they each play off each other & the mc.

i never expect much when it comes to meaningful, LASTING characterization (keyword: lasting) from atlus but i've honestly been pleasantly surprised by the cast of p3r & their dynamics with each other. maybe this comes from their circumstances & the fact that they live with each other, whereas the cast of p5r all came from different sects, backgrounds, & even schools, but the group feels genuinely tight knit to me, & the introduction of new members feels natural & interesting.

i know part of the "awkwardness" felt from the pt's comes from the fact that p5r was widely defined by the concepts of fate & destiny (quite literally, with yaldabaoth's influence on akira's life) & as such the dynamics & meetings of characters as well as their "decisions" to join felt somewhat shoehorned at times. p3r doesn't have that aspect (as far as i know, lol) & it really makes the dynamics between the whole group feel more compelling.

just from the members i've seen so far, i can identify multiple close relationships between them even this early in the game. yukari & junpei clearly have a set banter with each other & had bonded even before mc joined. mitsuru & akihiko were original members & have been there longer than everyone else. fuuka & yukari are developing a friendship of their own. mitsuru & junpei have that sort of stickler for rules/slacker dynamic between them, which is funny. even members who have yet to join (ken, shinji, & even koromaru) have already been somewhat introduced & shown/hinted to have existing dynamics with current party members (ken was shown with yukari & junpei at the shrine, shinji at this point obviously has history with akihiko & mitsuru, & koromaru showed up outside the dorm).

& again, i get WHY we didn't have that in p5r for at least pre introductions. akira's life was being decided for him in a sense, & he didn't really have much of a say in it. but even in terms of once the group is formed, the relationships between the pt's can't really be compared positively to the relationship between sees members.

genuinely, the only pt's that feel like they have an authentic friendship between them are ann & ryuji, or haru & morgana. there are certainly other dynamics, but they're either touched on very briefly (ann & makoto), are based in hostility or creepiness of the writers (ryuji & morgana, morgana & ann), or exist completely in fanon (goro & ann, haru & makoto, sumire & futaba).

so much of p5r is based in solidarity through trauma despite the circumstances of your meeting so it's honestly always been insanely disappointing that the solidarity shown amongst the pt's was so limited to a specific member + the mc.

but so far that's something i'm really liking about p3r. sees doesn't feel like a group full of people who essentially read as coworkers, but rather a family. & honestly with the introduction of more characters that feeling is only getting stronger. not only that, the characters foster strong relationships with the mc without DEPENDING on those relationships & not ONLY fostering those relationships with him.

I mean this with complete sincerity: Junpei and Chidori dating is one of the best narrative plots of Persona 3 and the fact that nothing even comes close to it in either P4 or P5 is why Persona 3 is the best one.

the rest is a nebulous "eh" for me. haru included because i only did her social link once and dont remember much/wasnt as interesting. that might change now after i finish her fucking papas dungeon

kasumi/sumire is kind of separated from the group because she is special in all kind of ways w she is terribly awesome but also the kinda character who couldve changed history if she had just joined from the start instead of having half a social link to be completed very very late

pairings? yusuke/futaba and shuake. open to others but i mostly care about those.
