In Pandemic: The Change in Prices and Its Effects

Due to the pandemic, I went back to China during the Spring break of my Junior year in high school in Massachusetts. While the international policy changed and the school started to accept in-person classes, I went back to the U.S. for college in 2021 fall. I hadn't been to America for a long time and got to experience college life for the first time, so there were quite many things that need me to get used to. Despite the familiar yet new school life, another thing that I found surprising and different to me is the price of the goods in the stores.

The prices of many merchandises in the markets, especially groceries, increased significantly. For example, a box of Driscoll's raspberries, which cost $2.99 in MA in 2019, costs $3.59 at Target in CA. According to my former knowledge, the goods in CA usually have a lower price than that MA's. However, the current price of the fruits in CA even surpasses the past price in MA. This proves a massive change in the grocery price during the pandemic. This experience made me curious, and I want to discover its consequential effect on the market. 

I want to use meat, which I consume daily, as the main subject I am investing in. Let's take branded sirloin steak as an example. According to statistics, its average price in 2021 is $6.12 (National Retail Report). And the price of beef has increased by 20% since last year (Kelloway). Therefore, it was $5.10 in 2020. Since there is a price change, then the demand for the steak will change accordingly. Then, through the demand curve, it is easy to see that the higher the price, the less quantity of goods there will produce (Pa = P2022, Pb=2021; Qa=Q2022, Qb=Q2021).

However, the reality does not correspond with the hypothesis that the demand for meat and dairy will remain high in the US (Kelloway). In the article, it argues that it is because compared to 2020, many restaurants started to reopen, which increased the consumption of that food. But I think that another essential factor of this phenomenon is that the groceries like meat are more of inelastic demand.

As shown in this picture, when a good is inelastic, its demand curve is steeper. Compared to the drastic price change from P2 to P1, the quantity change is comparably more minor from Q2 to Q1. This can perfectly explain why people's demands react less obviously toward the price difference. And the demand for meat is inelastic because it has few close substitutes and is a necessity, and the time horizon for this price change is short.

In conclusion, there was a significant increase in the price for groceries during the pandemic, while the demand for them is still high due to the inelastic characteristics of this type of goods. By experiencing life, observing the phenomenons around me, and incorporating the knowledge that I learned from my economic class, I gain a deeper insight into the subject by taking my theoretical studies into real-life practices. I will do more of these similar practices in the future!

First and foremost, there ARE. NO. BLUE. LIVES. FUCK. the only blue lives are smurfs and fucking avatars. Blue is a career choice. A choice these individuals made! A choice to uphold a law that oppressed a lower class and is bursting with “implicit bias”, which of course is the polite way to say “institutional racism”.

When someone becomes an officer of the law, even if it is to “be the good guy”, what you are ALSO swearing in to do is uphold unjust laws that are groundlessly based upon things like theft, minor drug offenses, traffic violations, your grass isn’t cut, noise ordinances… You’re vocally standing with landlords who evict people who are so broke that they can’t afford their rent. You’re supporting those that are creating homeless humans. That is also illegal. Being homeless is illegal in most states. And this is all worse if you are a person of color. Specifically, Black.

Let me tell you a story. I got pulled over last week. Doing 75 in a 55 in a car that wasn’t mine. I had a 9mm sig sauer p2022 9mm in my mid console. After a discussion, I let the police search my car, told them about the gun (unloaded) and you know what happened??
