#p.s. I am so sorry for spoiling the entire movie

CW for topics of suicide, ableism, dehumanization, and all sorts of abuse. These same topics are also presented in the movie, but I'm going to go into depth about them here. I'll try to remain as lighthearted as possible, but I've honestly been wanting to yap about it for a few days now, so I'm just going to share my full analysis of this scene.

That being said... I'M SO GLAD MY INSIGHT HELPED BECAUSE I GENUINELY JUDT FOUND YOUR POST WHILE SEARCHING FOR FANFICTION AND IT TRIGGERED MY SLEEPER AGENT CODE

I got scared towards the end that it was too much info because I aaaaabsolutely infodump. good god LOL. I've watched this movie three times in the past week, and that's more than I've watched any movie in a row ever, I'm going insane about it

I will say that, well, the ending of the movie is very disappointing. So are just about all of the other characters. Madeline is very charming and rather sweet, but she does some things that irk me personally (mostly just insisting that Miles is a musician when he is, in fact, an architect—now obviously, Miles deserves it, but toxicity doesn't excuse toxicity)

I think if I could rewrite the movie, I would spin it more positively. For one, I'd treat Edgar more as a genuine person. I think the narrative doesn't really know what to do with him half of the time, so it flip flops between showing him as really genuine, and then attempting to frame him as evil (which doesn't work to most people who watch it nowadays. There's maybe one scene that I would say still holds up any tension, and it's certainly deserved). I think the message was "computer evil technology bad man good" more than anything else.

They really had a lot to work with, but in the end, they didn't do a lot that was transformative narrative-wise. They did break a few unspoken rules of television in the eighties*, but they also played down Edgar's value as a person a lot.

Edgar is physically disabled, unable to move or see. This all is clearly very stressful to Edgar throughout the movie, who vents to a radio host(?) about his inability to move. On top of this, he is frequently referred to as a "dumb machine" or a "thing", and receives a lot of verbal & physical abuse from Miles**. In one scene, Miles is laying in his bed and Edgar is inside of the TV, and after Edgar expresses that he wants to kiss Madeline, Miles just kinda starts... laughing at him. Not in an "oh that's funny haha" way, but in a way that's clearly meant to be condescending and vitriolic.

Anyways. On top of being unable to move or see, Edgar asks more than twice for Miles not to touch him, but he ends up doing it anyways. Because of course he does. On a negative note, Edgar is portrayed as the bad guy for setting up this boundary; but, on a positive note, this is some genuinely good representation for people who are touch-averse, for any sort of reason. Personally, I like to interpret it as being related to neurodivergence.

On that note, Edgar is VERY autistic-coded. Very. He makes a lot of inhuman noises, like barking and beeping, and he evidently forms a fixation on music throughout the movie. He also often takes things literally and responds to rhetorical questions as if they were genuine, such as when Miles says "Look," and Edgar replies with "I can't!" - or when Miles sarcastically asks if he can have his [desk] chair, to which he says "of course you can, it's yours!". (Both have a genuine tone from Edgar.)



Aside from all of those themes, I'd argue that trauma is also a pretty big one. Edgar is a week old, maximum, by the time the movie ends; all he knows by that point is what Miles has taught him, and Miles has taught him almost nothing but hate. Edgar's tone, throughout the movie, goes from innocent and happy to dark and sad, before capping off with defeated and miserable. Because Miles has shown him nothing but aggression, Edgar eventually comes to the realization that he couldn't possibly fit in with the two of them, because, as he says, "love is a game for two people."

Here's a quote that really stuck out to me.

"Because I finally found out what love is. It's give, and not take; so I give her to you, and I take myself away."

Edgar is beaten on, bashed in, and broken down repeatedly, but despite that, his love stays strong, and he forfeits. Because he does genuinely love Madeline, and he wants to see her happy. He doesn't take out his frustrations on Miles so much as he just attempts to defend himself; it's all he can do, considering he literally cannot fight back or defend himself in any other way. He's hurt, but he's never defeated.

I think Electric Dreams should be considered a tragedy because of how bad Edgar ends up being screwed over by everyone.

He's genuinely just trying his best. Be nice to him. Be patient with him. Thank you.

*Edgar starts out not knowing what "love" is. Miles explains romantic love to him. In a later shot, "ME + MILES = LOVE" shows up on his screen, alongside "ME + MADELINE = LOVE" and a bunch of other similar text. Edgar, at this point, only knows of romantic love and not of platonic love. It can be reasonably inferred that he's bisexual.

Also, most AI/robot-type characters at the time had been very focused on destruction and cool fights, so someone so domestic and love-focused was new.

**Miles does the following:

- Screams at him

- Threatens him

- Lies to him

- Steals his song and plays it off as his own

- Hides him from anyone who enters his home

- Attempts to kill him (twice, technically three times if you count the axe-wielding scene)

- Slams his hands on his keyboard, despite Edgar repeatedly asking him not to touch him

- Keeps him locked up and leaves him at home all day

- Laughs at & mocks his disability

And on a related note, he also does quite a lot of invalidating/weird stuff to Madeline; "it's just a cello", lying, "I knew you weren't crying earlier- the little know-it-all", et cetera.

idk much about electric dreams (1984) but my initial interpretation from clips and a wikipedia scrub is that edgar is a genuine concerning menace and i would not ship him with anyone but the waters of the hudson bay after throwing him off a bridge

people who are in the fandom, this is a /gen call for you all to convince me that edgar from electric dreams is not, in fact, that thing i just said. you don't get to cite his voice his voice doesn't count i know it's cute but that's besides the point

I love movies. I love talking about my thoughts and opinions on them. I don’t like rating movies. Everyone can like what they like. Hope everyone finds this interesting.

P.s.- take this all with a grain of salt, I can find the good in anything and sorry for the spoilers.

My first movie is………….Fight Club!

I wanted to do American History X, but let’s do a small stepping stone with another Edward Norton movie. I feel like that would have been a lot for a first long post.

Fight Club has it all. Brad Pitt, soap, and a bunch of dudes fighting each other. This movie is a commentary on Capitalism and toxic masculinity, in my opinion. The Narrator wanted a place where everyone is equal and he found is everyday life boring. How did he solve this? He started a fight club, hence the name. This is for him to get some enjoyment from life. Things quickly ramp up.

Why do men take this as a ‘bro’ movie? If anything, it’s a hate letter to toxic masculinity. Why men take this that way boggles me. The film is satirical. Some men look up to this movie. They believe it. I think that is crazy. It shows the extremes.

People will see what they want to see. As a woman, I saw this as toxic masculinity fever dream. I kinda love it for that reason. I am a feminist, first off, so why do I love this movie? It doesn’t try to sugarcoat how things are. It is blatantly honest. When I tell you I was surprised at the end, believe me. As a society, we are our own downfall. We contradict ourselves. That’s human nature.

Now, this movie can also be viewed as a return to nature and our roots. No money, jobs, no brainless everyday life we feel stuck in. I didn’t entirely understand this the first time I watched it. But, looking back, it is sorta true. The Narrator was bored of his job. The thrill enthuses him to think up crazy ways to entertain himself. He finds it fun to have a secret. This fight club was dangerous. I mean, it caused the, without spoiling it, fall.

Okay, that was a quick overview of my thoughts, now it’s time to talk about the characters.

-The Narrator-

The Narrator, the film’s, well, anti-hero? Protagonist? I don’t know what to call him. To me, he think he doesn’t have control of his life, hence for the introduction of Tyler, Brad Pitt’s character. He is in a constant out of body experience state, or derealization. He is an unreliable narrator, constantly contradicting himself/Tyler. Everything and nothing is his fault at the same time. This, to me, helps push the story forward. You don’t know what can and will happen. You may think you know him, but then, bam, not who you think he is.

This whole story may be inside his head for all we know.

Norton’s incredible acting sells the point. The Narrator was just watching his life play out. At the end, everything joins together to show how he now feels he has control of his life. In a very destructive way. He does only think about himself, as told by this whole story. He is a character. He’s sometimes scared of himself.

The Narrator can’t accept the common day world. He wants adventure. So, he creates it.

I’m not really going to go into detail about other characters because this film is about his inner turmoil.

While, the message of change your life if you aren’t happy with it is good, the way The Narrator does it is bad. He destroys it. He doesn’t want to be controlled and, in doing so, controls everyone else. You can feel the panic in him, knowing it’s all about to explode. But, then he contradicts himself, another selling point of the unreliable narrative. This was his plan all along.

Some people absolutely love this movie for the wrong reasons. Why they can’t see the point is because their head is so far up their own butts that they can’t see that them actually being this way is destructive. He literally blows things up, what for? To find his excitement? This is when I question why can’t people be normal. Pick up a hobby. Try to make your life fun without beating people up. But, people who think this way only see the things they want to see. This further proves the point of how small minded we, as humans, are.

Whether you like this movie or not is your opinion. I’m just, sadly, really strongly opinionated and I like to share it with the world. I’m open to criticism. This is my first big post and I hope this isn’t too janky. I know I said I wouldn’t rate stuff, but I do like this movie. I’m not gonna pretend I have the best opinions in the world. I, honestly, hate the idea of rating movies. I want people to like what they like and hate what they hate. I’m not telling you everyone thinks the same way about this movie. I don’t wanna influence anyone’s opinions about this movie. I’m also not assuming everyone will think this way. Assuming make an a** out of you and me. (A**, u, me). Maybe this shoulda been in the beginning, oh well.

-Is one hundred percent the cool dad.

-Was a bit unprepared for kids tbh, but once he learns his S/O is pregnant oh boy does he get his act together.

-Being a parent makes him a bit nervous, he doesn't want to mess up or have something happen like it did in his past.

-Hides his profession until he thinks the kids are old enough.

-All that being said, he's actually a great parent.

-When your kids are younger you have to teach him how to care for them since he's never had any experience of his own. He's really willing and excited to learn.

-Refuses to be an absent parent and is there every step of the way.

-Proud dad. Someone could be like 'Well my child is an honor student' and he'd boast about whatever achievement his kid is most proud of and be like 'Im just so proud of my kids, and I will love and support them no matter what they do with their life.'

-Once they are teens he respects their need for privacy and space, but once a week you have pizza movie nights where everyone gets together. Trish and Lady included.

-Overprotective dad, will throw hands with Karen at PT Meetings.

-"Yeah well did you slay the demon overlord, Karen?"

-Started saving up early for them to go to college.

-Socks and sandals and barbeques.

Vergil

-Honestly a bit scared, he feels like he let Nero down and is scared he will do the same again for your kids.

-That being said, having kids was something you two planned out together. Having a layout helped him feel more assured that things wouldn't go wrong this time around.

-Is a strict or helicopter parent with higher standards for his kids. That being said, he tries not to be too harsh.

-Dante is the best uncle ever let me tell you, but Vergil is wary since he knows Dante probably lets them stay up late and eat junk food.

-He wants to pass down the family heritage to the kids, even if they don't end up being demon hunters themselves. The history of the past is what really matters to him.

-When I said helicopter parent I meant it. No texting boys. I will personally see you to the door so when your date picks you up I can glare your date down, tRY ME B-

-Helps with homework, which he is actually really good at.

-Might have nightmares about being brainwashed and in those moments you have to reassure him.

-Makes lunch for the kids every day.

-Cuts cute shapes into the sandwiches.

Nero

-Incredibly excited! But also oh my god I'm a dad and there's two of them!

-He helped raise a lot of kids at the orphanage, so while Nero is the youngest Sparda, he is the most prepared.

-Secures a better place to live, so the kids can be safe.

-Stopped cursing entirely but one time he accidentally let a f bomb slip and guess what your kids first word was-

-He's uber worried about being a distant figure in his kids life because he didn't know who his parents were so he's extra involved with their life.

-Asks Nico to not smoke around the kids, which she doesn't mind at all.

-Nico is simultaneously the best and worst babysitter ever.

-Nero lets his kids play with the kids from the orphanage.

-Nero is the most chill of the Spardas. He doesn't have any strict bedtimes, lets them go where they want to, and so forth.

-Won't allow them to fail in school though. He personally regrets never getting a real education knows the importance of it despite his punky manners.

-Despises when Dante wears socks and sandals like BOI IF YOU DON'T

-Speaking of Dante, both Dante and Vergil are required to see the kids every other week. Nero practically demands it.

-For Vergil it's really weird, not to say he doesn't like it but like… Am… Am grandpa??? You know.

-Dante SPOILS them, wakes up early to make them waffles, lets them pile on powdered sugar and syrup, don't get me started on Christmas.

-Has Kyrie teach him how to cook properly so he can cook for you and the kids.

-Nico may… or may not be a bad influence on the kids later in life cause like…. You know… She builds your kids weapons when they shouldn't have them…

-Nero wouldn't know how to feel about letting them devil hunt, they'd only be a quarter demon or maybe even less. While nero is still powerful despite being the third generation of the Sparda line, he still is such a worry wart about your kids being safe.

-When the kids are younger he watches Rise of the Guardians with the kids because they think Jack Frost is him-

hey guys! so i get a decent amount of questions about if the books i talk about have any representation in them (specifically i get trc a lot which for good reasons) and i know i ship boy do i ship but i do try and read as many books as i can with actual representation so i’m gonna comply a list (a working list for now) with some good books

a flash of hex by jes battis - this is part of a series and i never got around to reading the rest because i picked it up at a used book store it features gay, bi, and trans characters it was a seriously fun sci-fi book

the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay by michael chabon - listen this book is already a classic and for good reason it’s simply amazing and has everything you could hope for two jewish cousins hopping on the comic book bandwagon one obsessed with magic and trying to be a magician and one who falls in love with a solider it’s gonna make you cry but it’s so good

the family fang by kevin wilson - imagine a wes anderson movie as a book this is basically it annie’s story of coming to terms with her sexuality is heart warming

honor among punks by guy davis and gary reed - PLEASE READ THIS this is one of my fave books of all time it’s a graphic novel set in london in the 80′s if the industrial revolution never happened jack the ripper is running rampant and a bisexual female sherlock holmes (i’m sorry sharon holmes) is on the case! also did i mention she’s a punk? with a badass mohawk? also features a trans woman character but i don’t wanna spoil that part

the parasol protectorate and it’s varying spinoffs by gail carriger - if you follow me, you know how obsessed i am with this series it is my entire life and i absolutely adore everything about it the first book in the main series, soulless, starts off a bit slow but after that it’s totally worth it it’s a steampunk sci-fi/fantasy fusion set in victorian london where werewolves, vampires, humans, and some other creatures live in harmony (sort of) and basically everyone is queer i mean everyone the main character is bi demi and two of her closest friends are a gay vampire and a lesbian inventor

blind items by matthew rettenmund - about a history buff who falls for a tv star who has to stay in the closet for his career great if you love pop culture references a lot very sweet not as heartbreaking as it sounds

p.s. your cat is dead by james kirkwood - based on a play doesn’t focus too much on the characters sexuality but for 1972 it’s pretty boss

the egyptologist by arthur phillips - my mom sent me this one once in a care package because it was about egyptian history and had a gay character because obviously that’s my whole personality it doesn’t focus that much on his sexuality like at all and the book is alright but i figured i’d include it

221 baker streets - there’s only two stories in this anthology that count but they’re both worth it another sherlock holmes one the two stories are wildly different one is of sherlock and john in the 60′s and they’re a part of the factory in new york and the other one they’re teenage girls solving mysteires in their boarding school

ghost hunter series by victoria laurie - ok so gil is sometimes the stereotypical gay bff and it drives me crazy but this whole series is cheesy as hell but i adore it so it’s making it on the list it’s exactly what you think based on the title they’re ghost hunters and that’s about it (plus some romance troubles for both m.j. and gil)

the raven cycle by maggie stiefvater - ok as said before most of the questions i get is about this series YES ronan is gay and adam is bi are these words ever said? no is it annoying? sure but the series is really good and worth it ask me to sum it up? yeah i still can’t do that but you can check my tag and try to figure it out

lumberjanes by noelle stevenson and grace ellis - girls solving supernatural mysteries at summer camp could you ask for anything more? mal and molly are absolutely adorable

giant days by john allison - another graphic novel all the characters are absolutely amazing and it is fucking hilarious we don’t get into daisy’s sexuality until a couple issues in but it’s still fun

station eleven by emily st. john mandel - ok i know i keep saying this but we don’t even find out about clark’s sexuality until the end BUUUUUUT this book is so good i rec it to everyone it’s about a pretty simple disease wiping out most of humanity and then follows the survivors 

the foxhole court series by nora sakavic - another tumblr fave you probably know about this thanks to me as well it’s definitely not for everyone it can be extremely violent but i love it so it’s on here

the captive prince trilogy by c.s. pacat - i’m not gonna say anything about this it’s my guilty pleasure ok

nimona by noelle stevenson - noelle’s lesser known graphic novel! it’s adorable but also very bittersweet nimona becomes the side kick to villain lord ballister blackheart who is hellbent on destroying his nemesis, and jilted not-quite-lover,  sir ambrosius goldenloin

aristole and dante discover the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire saenz - another one you probably know :)

every heart a doorway by seanan mcguire - PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE read this book because guess what? my url is from this book! meet kade bronson my sweet child he’s a trans man and the main character nancy is asexual it’s about people at a boarding school to help them recover from falling through magical doors and living in magical worlds so like rehab for alice after coming back thru the looking glass

rainbow boys trilogy by alex sanchez - alright this trilogy is from the late 90′s so you gotta take a lot of it with a grain of salt but it really good for what it is just about three boys (two gay, one bi) and trying to navigate through high school, coming out, life after graduation, etc.

marine biolgy by gail carriger - it’s my girl again! this is the first story she’s wrote that’s set in present day it’s about alex, a werewolf, who’s starting to fall for marvin, a merman it’s just a short story so i don’t wanna give it all away but there’s a full length book coming soon i’m excited for that!

a charm of magpies trilogy by k.j. charles - ok i still have one more left in the trilogy to read but i adore this series! it’s a little risque ok but it’s about magicians and has some crazy mysteries and i’ve been really enjoying it

TFP - Mycroft residence scene

I am refering to my former theory, that all of TFP is mind palace, so Sherlock’s view, memories and imagination.

The most ridiculous part of the whole episode, completely over the top scene is Sherlock detecting Mycroft. First of all, his sexual orientation.

This is the movie, which he is obviosly enjoying.

Sherlock is framing Mycroft as straight and old fashioned, as he is attracted to a  movie of the 40ties, showing a male detective and a female suspect flirting (funny because we know, that Mark is a married gay man, while Ben... maybe we see here an opposite of the  real life ;-) But this seams to be important for the story, as we did’t see anything about Mycrofts sexual interests before.

When the male character tells ‘I can put you on a close watch…’ the film is starting to brake and we see a home made family film which tells us a lot if we take the time to look at it in detail:

and a happy, small, slim Sherlock, maybe 5 years old, with their parents at a picnic on the beach.

In the next picture we see the teenage adipose Mycroft with enormous appetite, scolded by his father.

Mycroft instantly pics up on the childhood film.

Sherlock want’s to play with his brother and father...

but Mycroft seams to be more interested in his book.

and is shocked to read

‘I’m back’!

We see the family waving to the person that is filming - and now something realy creepy happens:

Please watch out and explain...

Are this the eys of the woman that we saw in the film before? - Or is the family or Sherlock closely watched since then?

Remember: (S)he was capeable of manipulating people since (s)he was 5!

Maybe it is nothing, but why... did they reverse the picture? It is just for one second!

The difference between both pictures:

1. The facial expression of Mycroft, who looks sad in the first picture without waving, but kind of smiles in this one and also waves back.

2. The mother ist the same as Mycroft, sad without waving in the first picture, now she is smiling and waves, too. ???

Then the film starts melting. When this is Sherlocks memory of that day, something has been manipulated and he has forgotten the rest of it.

There is no Euros, and we do not know who was behind that camera. ((Euros?), Sherrinford, Uncle Rudy?)

When Mycroft leaves the room, Sherlock can’t resist to scare him with Steven King horror movie images like the blue dressed  girl,

(btw. nice reference to the red/blue theory of some reblogged stuff, nice picture of Ben’s parents, too ;-)

the Clown (Mycroft trying to fight the Clown with the sword and the gun does not work, we learn that he is defenceless, like the voice is telling him.)

the bleeding pictures (this painting looks strongly familiar, like Timothy Carlton alias father Holmes, dressed up like Isaac Newton :-)

And the next two picturers are showing a woman that is looking at the Newton picture, so maybe his wife, Mycroft’s and Sherlock’s mother? (Sorry, did’t get a good frozen picture of it.) But the picture that he is looking at, is showing a young, sad man, a ‘Knight’, a ‘Dragon slayer’ maybe this represents Sherlock.

Clearly, we are dealing with a family affair here.

(...and again, there is no image of a third sibling, no image of a sister (or brother), we only get three – … people always give up after three... so are there other images at this wall??? It is all in the dark, and Mycroft stops here at the picture of Sherlock to fight back!!!).

My assumption is, that Mycroft was much like his mother and Sherlock is more like his dad, as you can see in the short family movie before, they are opposites (Mycroft with mum, Sherlock with dad) in the images, here, Sherlock is facing the same direction as the Newton picture does. I am also recalling the Christmas scene in HLV, where we can see both parents today. She seems to be intelligent, but somehow emotionless cold. Dad is warm and caring. ;-)

All of it should show us as the audience, that this all is not real as it is all presented to ridiculous. But if you have any siblings, it is quite understandable that Sherlock is also making fun in imagining, how to scare his elder brother.

Now about the ‘scary’ part. Who is the scary east-wind (Euros), and what has Mycroft to do with it (her)?

(I am refering to my pre-posts on TFP and EUROS here, sorry, I’m blogging the first time in my life, so please be a little patient as I am still learning how to do it properly also no native speaker ;-)

When Sherlock enters the scene trough red curtains (!!!) like in a play, (can never resist the touch of the dramatic), he wears the deer stalker, symbol of his public persona, not his real self (Rebecca, TJLC explained). He is perfectly well, no signs of the stitches or the injured eye (so clearly mind palace, because this kind of injuries need some time to heal.)

Mycroft wears a red tie, and is standing next to the only lamp with a red lamp shade in the entire room, so if red has anything to do with emotions, this is possibly a heart to heart conversation.

Sherlock comes to the conclusions (to set up his mind palace imagery): 1. He has a sister, Euros. 2. His sister is institutionalized since early childhood by his brother 3. Mycroft is terrified of her (4. She is out now (John, perfectly well, mentions this). I will come back to this later.)

In TAB we learn, that in Sherlock’s mind, John is always smart and more offensive than we see him in real life.

In this scene, he and John are the smart ones, not Mycroft. Sherlock picks up on spoiling Mycroft’s obviously enjoyment of the movie and that he has disabled his security system (very promising :-). So he is researching the persona of his brother behind his smartness.

Sherlock knows that John has been shot at the therapy session (in real life) , the word EUROS and SHERRINFORD, too (I guess, this is what John may have told him , when Sherlock  found him shot, as this infromation is needed to make the mind palace work).  

To make the mind palest version work, it has to be a tranquilizer (we have seen a real gun, no injection gun 4 times in TLD)– but he needs John at his side now to find out the truth.

He has again used his homeless network and will pay the actors, reminding them not to spend the money on drugs :-)

He give the smart explanation and invitation to Baker Street to John, (he does no longer need to be the cleverest person in the room).

‘There is a place for the desperate, scarred and terrified people with nowhere else to run’ – this is how Sherlock thinks about his work as the world’s only consulting detective, so not a dragon slayer ;-)

And this was just the first 7 minutes of TFP - There is much more to be investigated - I will continue with the next scene in 221B, in case you are interested...

P.S.: Rewatched the picture scene again today, there are 5 pictures at the wall, the first is showing a house, maybe the family home. But the last is not bleeding, showing another person... it is in the dark... I asume that Mycroft does not have a picture of himself at the wall, so there might be another sibling... I like to keep you guessing...;-)

Fresher’s Week

It has officially been one week (or a little more) since we’ve arrived here in the U.K. and I currently feel so drained, but in a good way. You see, a tradition they have here in London is Fresher’s Week (roefreshers.com), which is a week of fun-filled activities to get socializing with all the other Fresher’s (new freshman, like us) or ReFresher’s (2nd/3rd year students) right before the week school starts. To participate in all the events they had planned, we had to purchase wristbands at 55 quid (quid is slang for pounds) which is equivalent to about $75 dollars? Kinda pricey, but they had some really cool events going on. Here’s how my week went:

Monday: I <3 Bop Night. Those who bought wristbands were given “I <3 Bop” shirts to wear to this student club on campus called I <3 Bop. They were plain white icebreaker shirts and we were encouraged to have other students sign our shirts with their names. Usually I <3 Bop happens on Friday nights and it’s 5 quid to get in, but they moved it to Monday night and let us in for free. We didn’t need to be at the actual place until 11, so our flat had started their own party for the time being. It was insane. Our entire kitchen was filled with people from the other flats next door. There were people dancing on our counter tops and some even punched a hole into our ceiling fist bumping to the music LOL. We were hanging out at our flat til 11, then once it was time to go everyone was outta there! It was definitely a freezing walk across campus to the club (one that me and my flatmates ran instead to keep warm). Once we got into the Bop, the fun continued. The music was amazing, the people were so friendly (a girl ran across the dance floor to meet me because I was Filipino), and everyone was just having a good time.

Tuesday: After a tiring but really good night, I woke up early on a Tuesday because our UH Professor, Jonna, was taking us to see the movie “Dunkirk” at the Odeon. It was for her AMST 340 War and Media class, which consisted of me, Dominique and Max. The other 6 UH kids took her other class, which was something cinema related. Anyway, we met up early with her to catch the bus to the Odeon. It was a really good movie actually, depicting the WWII evacuation of allied soldiers in France, Dunkirk. The movie upset me of course because it was definitely no happy ending, but then again it was based on what actually happened in history. Once we got back to campus, the Fresher’s event for the night was called “Love London” where we had to choose between 3 different venues in London. First was FlipOut, which is basically like iTrampoline in O’ahu. The second was a mini golf venue called Junkyard Golf, where you play minigolf in a wacky junkyard, then finally Flight Club, which was a bar where you compete against other teams in darts. Me and my flatmates went to FlipOut and we had an hour filled with bouncing and jumping into foam pits. We caught an uber there and back (the uni gave us 15 quid off coupons).

Wednesday: This day’s event was another dance party at a more higher up club off campus called “The Grand.” However, it didn’t start until 10PM. While most of us were already starting to get tired and sleep in by Wednesday, there was still a tea party we Hawai’i kids had to attend. It was a Hawai’i students’ treat, but the University took us to get afternoon tea at this hotel called SoHo and then treated us to watch a play called “An American in Paris.” To be honest, this was the first time we Hawai’i kids got together as a group again because it felt like it had been so long, so it was a really fun gathering. We were accompanied by Prof. Jonna and a study abroad advisor, Gwen. We got to the hotel and were seated at a long, elegant table. I’ll admit, having british tea was fun. It was my first time drinking tea with milk, and I ordered a tea called Bourbon Vanilla, so it tasted very milky but so good. We then got this 3-tiered platter full of sweet and savory treats, and the waiter told us that there was a certain way to eat them. We were to start from the top (sweet) then work our way towards the bottom (savory). I should have listened, because I started off with savory (there were mini sandwiches and sausage rolls and they were delicious!). I don’t really consider myself into sweets, so I just took a bite of each dessert and enjoyed the rest of my tea.

 Afterwards, we all had to walk a good 6 minutes to get to the Theater to watch the play. It was an interesting play, about an American in Paris of course, but to sum it all up 3 different guys were falling for the same girl and in the end she ended up with the American man. (Sorry to have spoiled it for you). The play ran for 2 hours, then we headed back to campus by 5. The next 5 hours before The Grand were dedicated to eating dinner with my flatmates, getting ready and dressed up, then heading towards the busses that would take us to the club. Again, it was an amazing venue. There was a big disco ball inside and the DJ was just playing throwback booty pumping music left and right. Truthfully, I was tired. So me, Eskil, and Erin left early and made it back home in an uber.

Thursday: Tried to sleep in again, but I was getting my nails done with Gwen somewhere in Putney in the morning (which is a bus ride to the town over). Afterwards around 12, me and a couple of the flatmates took a bus to Asda to stock up on another couple week’s worth of groceries. We got back in time a little before we had to load the busses up for today’s adventure: Thorpe Park. The university rented out an entire amusement park for us to enjoy for the night. It was an hour drive there, but the park was massive! There were so many types of roller coasters that me and my friends tried! I’ll admit I was super hungry in the beginning but just seeing the rides made me excited to get on. My favorite would have to be a ride called the “Saw” ride, which is based off the movies of the Jigsaw murders. There was a part where we were going up a completely lateral slope, only to be dropped quickly down afterwards. My stomach was filled with butterflies all night. There was also this ride called “Tidal Wave,” where the drop leads you into a massive cold lake and you guessed it...the water splashed and a huge waterfall of water basically fell onto us. Not to mention, it was a really cold night. Me, Xenia, Selma, and Angelika had to share one of those machines that you put coins into to dry you off afterwards, and we were still damp afterwards. But it was so fun. We tried to ride all the coasters but sadly got too tired and hungry to finish the remaining two. So we went to eat at KFC (which is really popular here) and warmed up with tea and a chicken sandwich. We felt icky and wet and a hot shower sounded so nice at that moment. After we finished eating, we ran (literally ran in hopes of warming ourselves up) to the buses and got shuttled back to university. I took a hot shower, popped some NyQuil pills so I wouldn’t get sick the next day, and knocked out.

Friday: I keep telling myself I’ll give myself a day to sleep in, but today wasn’t going to be that day. The event they had planned for us on Friday was Fresher’s Fair, which was a fair consisting all the kinds of activities, sports, clubs, or organizations that we could join on campus! I myself had actually already joined a society known as R.A.G. (Raising and Giving), which was a student led organization that helps raise money for local charities through really fun and cool events! They once hosted an event called “JAILBREAK,” where you have to pretend you’re an escaped prisoner and try to get as far away from campus as you can without spending ANY MONEY! Insane right? Someone got as far as Poland last year. You definitely have to raise a certain amount of money to participate in the event, but during the actual thing you’re basically asking other people to donate funds to help you get as far away as you can! This year in November however, they’re doing an event that’s the opposite of JAILBREAK, known as LOST. You get blindfolded and dropped off somewhere random and far in the U.K., and then you have to find your way back to campus without spending any money. Crazy right? Crazy but fun. Anyway, I joined this organization and actually got on the committee, so my job this morning at the fair was to encourage other students to join and ask them to vote for the charity we’ll be donating to for the year! It was a ton of fun  (there was a Domino’s Pizza booth and I got free pizza). After my 11-1 shift was over, I did some laundry, cooked my food for the week, and now I’m blogging about my week :) There’s actually a dodgeball event happening tonight, but your girl needs a break from all the events. Haha!

Saturday: Even though Saturday’s tomorrow, the event for Saturday to finish up Fresher’s Week is FRESHER’S FEST! It’s a grand finale filled with music and it’s also Toga themed haha! I’m not too sure if it’s on campus or off, but I’ve been hearing it’s going to be SICK so I am just trying to save up the last of my energy for tomorrow night.
