HUGAR
“ok”
A Winged Victory For The Sullen.

Famous Samsung Ringtone ‘Over the Horizon’ Reimagined by Original Composer
Pétur Jónsson’s ‘Over the Horizon’ Takes New Samsung Galaxy Smartphone Users on a Soundscape Journey
As smart phones become an increasingly essential tool of everyday life, the ringtone, too, has made a presence in today’s modern world. “Over the Horizon” is perhaps one of the most recognisable ringtones, as it has been the default ringtone of Samsung’s Galaxy devices since 2011.
It is so recognisable, in fact, that when heard from a distance, you might even wonder if it is coming from your own device.
Each year, with each new generation of Galaxy devices, “Over the Horizon” is rearranged to mirror the aesthetic transformation of the devices themselves. For 2018, Samsung reached out to Icelandic composer Pétur Jónsson to reimagine the melody.
Delicately layering instruments, Jónsson’s minimalist arrangement takes you away on an atmospheric journey of discovery. The piece begins with the soft tones of a single piano playing the refrain. As additional instruments are gradually introduced, the sound rises to a crescendo before melting away.
As the video cuts away from the opening scene of Jónsson at the piano, it prompts you to imagine travelling over the remote Icelandic countryside. Capturing the beauty of Nordic nature, the camera pans over misty mountains and jagged cliffs, steaming geysers and snow-blanketed hills.
Listening to this year’s piece by Jónsson, you will find that the notes arouse the most pure, fundamental elements of the human sentiment that often remain hidden in our daily lives.
In this way, the latest version of Samsung’s brand sound has the power to relax the mind and heal the soul, thus resonating with all who hear it, regardless of their age.
Samsung was a four-time winner of the World Branding Awards, in the Consumer Electronics-Television category.

HUGAR
RIFT

Wondrous soundscapes from the Icelandic duo of Bergur Þórisson and Pétur Jónsson The path to “Reykjavík,” the fourth single from Icelandic duo Hugar‘s forthcoming album, The Vasulka Effect: Music for the Motion Picture (out 2 October), involved a convergence of visual inspirations. First, there was the documentary The Vasulka Effect, directed by Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir. Hugar (aka Bergur Þórisson and Pétur Jónsson) composed the film’s score …

At the heart of this symmetrical programme, Davíð Þór Jónsson, Pétur Grétarsson and Víkingur Ólafsson will perform their improvisation on the theme of Minimal-Maximal. On each side of the improvisation are two milestones of the 20th century solo percussion repertoire; Morton Feldman’s philosophical work The King of Denmark (1964) and Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Zyklus (1959), in which the performer plays over 20 instruments, placed in a cycle around him.
Two works by Steve Reich open the programme and close it. Like many other works of the great American composer, these merge repetitive motives associated with minimalism with compositional procedures and ideas that can only be seen as maximal.
Reich describes his Cello Counterpoint (2003) as being “one of the most difficult pieces I have ever written, calling for extremely tight, fast moving rhythmic relationships not commonly found in the cello literature.”
Different Trains is among the great chamber works of the 20th century. Haunting and powerful, it is simply a must to experience its impact in concert.

Icelandic instrumentalists. - Hugar: Ró
Multitalented instrumentalists Bergur Þórisson and Pétur Jónsson are longtime friends and natives of Seltjarnarnes who began writing music together in 2013. Recently, Hugar have signed with Sony Music Masterworks and will be dropping their first release in August.
Bergur and Pétur combine a shared passion for music and an impressive resume working alongside fellow Icelandic luminaries Björk and Sigur Rós, among many others. Ró explores the contrast between order and disorder, and means ‘calm’ in English. As a solo piece for acoustic piano, the room sounds of the performance are intermingled with the notes in a way that creates a palpable sense of longing, and vulnerability. The open space of the intimate performance serves as a perfect backdrop for the bold symbolism of the video montage. Ró is a beautiful and meditative piece that elevates the ambient sound of wood-creaking as a counterpoint to the sparse melody.
Icelandic duo Hugar seek to put their everyday experiences into sounds. This song is featured on our Rainy Day playlist.
