Pacific Encounter Full Tour

A few weeks ago I was lucky to visit the Pacific Encounter in Brisbane as a guest of P&O Cruises.

I was aboard in my capacity as a historian, and had been working with P&O Cruises on the launch of their 90th anniversary of cruising in Australia celebrations. After all the effort that went into it, I’m pleased to say the event was a huge success, but once it was over, I had all day before my flight home was due to take off.

So I took the opportunity to grab my cameras and take a walk around the Pacific Encounter to photograph and film the entire ship!

I’m really happy to bring you this tour of the ship. There’s lots of interesting things to see on board, from the public spaces to the ship’s suites (as well as a few oddities - such as no deck 13).

Ventura Departs on a Spain and Portugal Cruise

The End is Nigh for P&O Cruises Australia

The end is fast approaching for P&O Cruises in Australia.

Having cruised in Australian waters since 1932 and with a heritage in these waters that dates back to 1852, there are now just a few weeks left of P&O branded cruises.

Here's what's going to happen to the P&O Australia ships as they farewell this iconic brand!

Pacific Explorer:

Pacific Explorer has already made her final call to Sydney, meaning the last time a P&O flagship visits Sydney has already slipped past with no fanfare.

But there is still time to farewell this ship, with Pacific Explorer’s last cruise an 11-night voyage to Singapore, departing Fremantle on 7 February 2025.

Fremantle has been an important port for P&O since the 1850s, so it is fitting to see the flagship depart the Western Australian port for its final P&O Cruises voyage.

The ship will transfer to a new owner, Resorts World Cruises, and sail in Southeast Asia as Star Scorpio.

Pacific Adventure:

The most emotional farewells will likely take place in Sydney, which has been the hub for cruising aboard P&O ships for over 90 years.

Pacific Adventure will operate P&O’s final Sydney voyages, with two return trips to Tangalooma and Moreton Island. These 4-night cruises will sail from 6th to 10 March, and 10th to 14 March, as Sydney return voyages.

The ship's Penultimate arrival will be at Circular Quay, while the final arrival will berth at White Bay, making March 14th the final P&O harbour bridge arrival. That same day will see the final P&O Cruises Australia departure from Sydney, as the ship sails out of the harbour for refit to become Carnival Adventure.

Pacific Encounter:

The final P&O Australia passenger voyage falls on the Brisbane-based Pacific Encounter. This is kind of poetic, as Brisbane was the first cruising port of call when Strathallan sailed from Sydney to Brisbane in 1932 enroute to the Pacific Islands.

Pacific Encounter will undertake a weeklong Pacific Island cruise departing 8 March. This will see the ship return to Brisbane for 15 March – one day after Pacific Adventure leaves Sydney.

As such, the final ever P&O Cruises Australia passengers will depart Pacific Encounter on March 15. That same day, the ship will leave Brisbane for refit to become Carnival Encounter, marking the final Brisbane departure, last ever P&O Australia departure, and an end of P&O Cruises in Australia – a lineage that dates back 93 years.

P&O Lives On?

While P&O Australia will be officially shut down on 29 March 2025, Carnival Corporation also owns P&O Cruises UK which has a fleet of ships based out of the UK.

One of those ships is the Arcadia, which will be visiting Australia on her world cruise. Ironically, this will take place in March 2025. Thus, as P&O Australia closes down, we will see a UK based P&O branded ship make calls at Australian ports.
