do you think karen's alright while youre gone? i mean, she's still left in the dark, both literally and figuratively...
"I... Really hope so- but u-um- I'm- not allowed to leave."
"You know, the darkness isn't.. so bad. I think I rather enjoy not being able to see how disgusting this place is."

Marvel Studios: Voices Rising - The Music Of Wakanda Forever [Series]
Episode #3: “London: Bring It Home” [available on Disney +] [w/ time stamps to follow along]
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
▻ London was the last stop, where they [Ludwig, producers, artists, etc] gathered sounds and music from Nigeria and Mexico to bring it all together back in London.
▻ “It was 10 full days of scoring. Not only was Ludwig recording with the orchestra during the day, but he was also doing sessions with artists at the studios at night time.” - Monica Sonand [Score Supervisor] [3:58] We see that Ludwig would be up till @4:00AM onward in the studio, recording with artists.
▻ Ryan was a huge fan of Burna Boy’s [Nigerian singer] music and introduced him to Ludwig. From there, Ludwig recorded music of Burna singing with guitar on the track but he didn’t know where it would fit in the overall film. “I didn’t know how to elaborate on it. I got the idea to send the vocals and the guitars to P. Priime [Music Producer]” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [4:42] P. Priime gave the track life from there, which Burna Boy then listened to and put his spin on it. The final track “Alone” is used in the scene where Princess Shuri [Letitia Wright] is shown recreating the heart shaped herb in the lab before she becomes the Black Panther [5:34]
▻ Stormzy was approached to sing on the track “Interlude” for the soundtrack. This song has a similar melody to Burna Boy’s “Alone”. “Stormzy wrote this beautiful, very intimate verse. That was also a beautiful moment.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [6:44] We hear this track played during the lab scene with Princess Shuri and Riri Williams [Dominique Thorne] brainstorming before battle [6:51]
▻ “I discussed a lot with Ryan about how we’re going to use the Black Panther theme, how we’re going to use the talking drums, which was T’Challa’s [Chadwick Boseman] main instrument. It became a significant part of the storyline of the first movie. It’s also one of the first instruments you actually hear in Wakanda Forever. It’s what starts the funeral ceremony. After that, you don’t hear it anymore until the very end of the movie. With T’Challa not being there, it was impossible to fit that instrument in. So I needed a theme for Shuri.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [7:22]
▻ Tunde Jegede [instrumentalist] is shown playing the Kora [8:35]. This instrument is played during the funeral scene in the beginning of the film where Princess Shuri is seen weeping with Queen Romanda [Angela Bassett] by her side. “It was Ryan’s idea to change the instrument of that theme into a voice. You hear this lullaby song, which is representing the memory of T’Challa.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [8:45] The lullaby is played during the scene with Shuri and her mother by the lake, speaking of her brother’s prescence. [9:03] “The presence that you felt was just a construct of your mind” - Princess Shuri. “The music switches from that warm, supportive feeling to this cold, dark emotion, and Jorja Smith’s vocals take over.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [9:17] The track “He wasn’t there” was then implemented into the score.
▻ “For Shuri, everything doesn’t make sense. What she knew has been blown up. And she’s like how do I get through this?” - Letitia Wright [Princess Shuri] [9:25] “The vocal [sung by Jorja Smith] is growing and growing as the storyline moves on. It transforms into a crazy, big, distorted synthesizer. The key element is how it blends together with the Black Panther fanfare from the first movie.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [9:44] We hear this distorted version of the vocals in the climatic scene where Shuri falls from the sky, making her big introduction as the Black Panther to Wakanda. This track is known as “Wakanda Forever” in the score. The drums from T’challa’s theme music plays along with Shuri’s theme song during her arm wrestling scene with M’baku. “The Black Panther lives!” - M’baku [Winston Duke]
▻ The transition and tonal change of Shuri’s theme music is then heard during the desert fight scene between Black Panther and Namor [Tenoch Huerta]. “And then you go from something like that to 120 people singing, and playing their instruments as soft as they can.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [10:30] This track is known as “Vengeance has consumed us” in the score. It is played while Namor is on his back and Shuri demands him to yield. “ Yield and Wakanda will protect your oceans. We will protect your secrets. Vengeance has consumed us. We cannot let it consume our people.” - Black Panther [Letitia Wright]. “That is something that synthesizers are never going to be able to re-create in the sound of all these people in one room.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [10:47]
▻ “I’m really proud of all the character arcs in this film coming to a place of peace and healing, or on their way to it. I feel like we’ve done that really well!” - Letitia Wright [Princess Shuri] [11:02]
▻ Ludwig worked on the track “Con La Brisa” for a while but wanted to find a way to make it better. He tried to add an orchestra to it. “And then when I brought it back to LA and I saw the whole movie and heard it like that, it took me out of it. That was an interesting example of like okay let’s go back to the magic that was there from the beginning. I had to think okay well, the most magic thing about this song is just the vocal and if you can leave that driving the song, and strip away everything else from the song that’s how you’re going to get the most power from it.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [12:12] Ludwig felt that Foudeqush’s vocals on the track were enough. Less is more.
▻ The funeral scene of Shuri and Queen Ramonda walking through the crowd with T’challa’s mask was one of the first scenes Ryan shot. “Ryan was very adamant that this is an opportunity for us to use the voice from the first movie.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [13:26] There was a recorded session back in 2017 for the first Black Panther of Baaba Maal singing. “I had a friend of mine that had produced one of Baaba Maal’s albums and I just called him and asked him if he could put us in touch. I called Baaba Maal and I told him me and my wife are going to go to Senegal. Do you have time to meet up?” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [13:52]
▻ “I invited him [Ludwig] to join me and my band to make a tour. I knew that to get the spirit and the soul; it’s something that you can’t explain to someone. It would be good for him to see how people play it.” - Baaba Maal [Musician] [14:17] Ludwig went on tour with Baaba for two weeks. Baaba says that that was a great experience for him to learn that Ludwig is a very patient person, especially if you are going to learn about the culture. You have to be patient in order to do so. [15:03] We hear Baaba’s voice in the opening of the first Black Panther where T’Challa [Chadwick Boseman], Nakia [Lupita Nyong’o] and Okoye [Danai Gurira] are seen flying into Wakanda. “So when it became time for Wakanda Forever to be able to bring Baaba Maal back, we thought it would be very powerful.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [15:29]
▻ “Baaba Maal, he’s the most dynamic vocalist I’ve ever recorded. You gotta be really careful with him because he will blow out a mic! Pretty loud, but controlled loud.” - Chris Fogel [Recording Engineer/Mixer] [15:49] We hear Baaba’s beautiful and emotional vocals in the studio, overlayed with recorded drums and instruments that Ludwig and Chris strung together. His vocals were used in the send off scene of T’challa’s casket. Baaba also makes an appearance in the movie during the ceremony of the Wakandans sending T’Challa off. They played the final scene for him in studio with his vocals and instruments overlayed and Baaba loved it. [17:54]
▻ “The most important thing as a human being is to be proud of who you are and art is the truest form to show your identity.” - Ludwig Göransson [Composer] [18:26]
▻ “That’s really dope of Ludwig to find a way to have people of the Latinx community, artists of the African diaspora in one album and for it to all fit and flow. I think that’s really brave! It’s a reflection of the world that we actually live in. That’s beautiful to see.” - Letitia Wright [Princess Shuri] [18:44]

Fugazi, 9:30 Club, Washington D.C. USA 4/25/2001 (FLS #0997)
One out of just two shows Fugazi played in Washington D.C. in April of 2001, this one a benefit for the Washington Free Clinic & Prevention Works at the 9:30 Club (their last performance at this legendary venue).
If you want to get a good feel of what Brendan is up to behind his kit, this recording will be right up your alley since the drums are dominant in the mix. Ian’s vocals and Guy’s guitar by contrast are more difficult to discern, at least up until Closed Captioned. Chalking up the overall sound quality as “excellent” is stretching it in my opinion, particularly since there is some distortion in the left channel as well after Reclamation (see below) until around Cashout.
The recording of the performance itself is complete (contrary to the introductory remarks by Mark Andersen of Positive Force and the other speakers) and documents 24 songs.
The band draws from The Argument album (not yet released at the time) (8), the Furniture EP (not yet released) (2), End Hits (4), Red Medicine (2), In on the Kill Taker (3), Steady Diet of Nothing (2), Repeater (2) and the Margin Walker EP (1).
You get 3 new and (at the time) unreleased songs to open up the set, which is actually very heavy on (at the time) unreleased material overall, while you get only a couple of songs off of their earlier albums and even nothing off of the 7 Songs debut EP. The set list further does include rare 2001 performances of Exit Only and Full Disclosure.
My personal highlights of this show are the elusive Strangelight, the dub-injected jam on Promises to close out the night, as well as a slow burn, crushing version of Reclamation.
Courtesy of Joseph Vesely, who attended the show,
“one thing from the 9:30 club that i remember though is that i think they played the best version of ‘Reclamation’ that i have ever seen. it was really out of hand!! by the end of the song, both mic stands had been knocked over, and guy and ian were on their knees, with ian just sweating like mad.”
Note that Joe and Brendan dabble in “Lusty Scripps” during one of the interludes, and that Ian touches on the issue of health care and the reasons for this benefit concert before going into Arpeggiator.
Grainy, shaky footage of a handful of songs from this show (including Reclamation) is available, courtesy of Marcus Costa.

Panic! at the Disco’s first headlining tour
P!ATD headlined their first tour in April 2006 only 8 months after they played their first show ever. Things were moving so quickly with the band that this stage in their style & sound only lasted for a short time, but I think it totally still stands out as its own exciting season. Here’s my tag for this tour, and then some other pictures will be in this tag for January – April in general.
TOUR DATES:
April 18: Birmingham
April 19: Cardiff
April 20: Newcastle
April 21: an acoustic in-store performance & signing at Music Zone in Glasgow
April 21: Glasgow
April 22: Manchester
April 23: Portsmouth
MTV2′s “A Day On Tour With P!ATD” was filmed around this point... some of the better clips that are left: one, two, three, four. (this part and this one were removed). Here’s the hotel cribs bit too.
April 25: London (the Astoria show)
April 26: Leeds
April 27: Nottingham
April 28: Oxford
April 29: Give It A Name (London)
April 29/30: the secret show
April 30: Give It A Name (Manchester)
May 2: Paris, France
May 3: Utrecht, Netherlands
May 4: Cologne, Germany
ABOUT THE TOUR IN GENERAL:
The UK shows were often hyped as the main tour, while the 3 extra European shows were advertised separately. So sometimes this was referred to as a UK tour.
This headlining tour was being planned at the very start of 2006 before P!ATD started opening for The Academy Is... so people didn’t realize exactly how big the band would become by early spring.
The tour sold out SO quickly (with the exception of the Give It A Name dates obvs). Some venues for this tour sold out within an hour and were already being upgraded the day that tickets went on sale in the second week of February. Several of the initial venues were pretty small (like the Cathouse in Glasgow) and then got upgraded several times. Brendon said they were originally supposed to play to 350 people in Manchester but it ended up being 2,000. I heard it wasn’t possible to upgrade the Zodiac in Oxford, though.
Designer Magazine reported that tickets were selling for $200/pair on ebay... that was converted to USD in 2006 so idk what it was originally.
This was definitely advertised & hyped as P!ATD’s first headlining tour (the handful of December 2005 shows that they had headlined in southern California weren’t a legit tour). Brendon even told some UK crowds that these April shows were their first time headlining a tour. The band answered quite a few interview questions about this being their first time headlining a tour. It was just like a common fact that this was P!ATD’s first headlining tour... and it was a big deal at the time! A few months later the band said that the summer tour in the USA was their first time headlining, so I’m just going to assume that they meant a national tour.
ABOUT THE MUSIC & OPENING BANDS:
P!ATD was finally done with opening for another band at this point and had to make the big jump to playing a full set night after night.
On April 19th Spencer told a journalist: “We played our first show last night in Birmingham and we played 13 songs, so it was a drastic difference. We noticed a big change in how long our set was and how tired we were at the end of it!”
P!ATD was trying to headline big shows for the first time with only one album’s worth of songs to use, so they added 2 covers to their set: Round Here & Slow Motion. The Round Here cover is still one of my favorite things they ever did! (Brendon brought it back for a couple shows in 2007 as a solo piano version too).
They added interludes between songs, but what they did in April & May was way different from what they revised everything to sound like for the summer tour.
They still relied on Spencer’s iPod since they didn’t have touring musicians.
The opening bands were Men, Women, & Children (MWC) and Forgive Durden. Brendon said he stood on the side of the stage and watched them each night. I was so ridiculously proud of the P!ATD guys for stepping into the headlining role they’d been closely observing on previous tours. They pulled off some pretty big shows here.
I think they joined MWC onstage occasionally. P!ATD usually didn’t have their opening bands perform with them during the pre-split years, so this clip of MWC singing IWSNT is pretty neat in hindsight.
Sometimes Brendon joined Forgive Durden onstage to drum and sometimes Spencer did too.
Fickle opened for P!ATD in Paris.
MISC STUFF ABOUT THE SHOWS:
the video at the top of this post has some highlights from each night (I had to work with what was left online in 2021 sorry).
the band had their own backdrop now!! everything about this tour was so exciting.
BRENDON’S STAGE ENTRANCE! even that entrance music is still really fun to hear (here’s the “ladies and gentleman...” part it would build to).
Brendon was starting to step even more into a character onstage with his narrator role. During this tour he talked about how it was easier to take on the personas in Ryan’s lyrics because they were so different from his own personality.
fans complained that P!ATD crowds were extra pushy. the band even commented that the crowds were intense.
one girl who got Brent’s guitar pick said it tasted like old Mexican food. I need to add that because it really sums up some of the fans during this month lol.
This was the band’s first time in France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Those 3 shows in early May sounded a lot smaller and calmer than most shows in the UK tour. Some fans who had been at the May shows in France & Germany were reminiscing at the end of 2006 and saying how those small crowds of legit fans had been so nice compared to the crowds of thousands of screaming young girls that were at shows in those countries by fall 2006.
a lot of the UK fans who had seen P!ATD in late January with TAI said that they’d improved so so so much in just a couple months. I also noticed big changes just from the end of March... Spencer, Ryan, and Brendon had really thrown themselves into their jobs and were working so incredibly hard.
Ryan, Brendon, and Spencer said they’d found some frilly shirts in Japan, so I think that might be where Brendon’s black shirt came from... he wore that onstage a lot in late April & early May.
I mentioned earlier how it looked like Brendon had been closely watching William Beckett as he learned how to be a frontman. Brendon had been trying to make a couple halfhearted moves on Ryan by the end of the Truckstops & Statelines tour, and then he stepped it up in April (especially on the nights with bigger crowds). The mic sharing hadn’t fully started yet, though.
Ryan looked more comfortable onstage at this point in comparison with the previous months. He was like a totally different musician from fall 2005 too.
Brent had slightly toned down his, uh... enthusiastic playing style.
Brendon told Designer Magazine in spring 2006: “Before I was in the band and even when I've been a the band I tried to take vocal lessons because I wasn't a singer. At the time I was doing backing vocals but I thought I might as well take vocal lessons. When I used to sing it was really nasally and sounded like shit. I guess I always used to sing along to the Beatles and stuff like that but I never tried to sound like that. I still do a few of the vocal lessons each night before I go on.”
Spencer was just plain good at this point. He really held the band together and that didn’t go unnoticed by journalists. The German fans I heard from were really into Spencer and thought he was an amazing drummer.
ABOUT THE BAND IN GENERAL:
Brendon turned 19 right before this tour started. Ryan was also 19 and then Spencer & Brent were 18.
Spencer had signed with MEINL earlier this spring and was slowly showing up in small ads.
The band wasn’t as well known in Germany as they were in the UK.
They did a BBC Radio One live session performance of IWSNT & Build God and Spencer was interviewed.
It still seemed like Ryan was carrying the majority of solo interviews, but I really appreciated Spencer’s too... his answers were very articulate, intelligent, & informative.
A lot of the media focus had shifted towards prioritizing Ryan & Brendon as the main faces of the band, so those two would get more of the print interviews, while Spencer picked up more radio & online interviews. Sometimes a picture of Brendon and/or Ryan was actually printed next to a magazine interview with Spencer lol.
I don’t remember if I mentioned this in my posts about the earlier tours, but this trend had started even at the beginning of February where Spencer would do something like a phone interview on his own while Brendon & Ryan did radio interviews together or other interviews separately. It’s probably good that Brent didn’t contribute as much because it later sounded like he was never involved enough with the band to be able to explain details. But the point here is that the guys didn’t start regularly breaking into pairs for interviews until they got Jon (who quickly threw himself into learning whatever he needed to know in order to competently speak for the band). I’m not trying to be negative about Brent... the guy seemed sweet. But he didn’t even come close to pulling his own weight.
P!ATD was still in the top 10 played artists on purevolume, and AFYCSO was the top independent album (according to Billboard I think. I didn’t care as much about those stats, sorry).
A Young Scot interview in Glasgow asked Brendon if the band members ever got sick of each other’s company and ended up arguing. He replied: “We used to, on the first tour. It took a lot of getting used to, because when you’re in a band and you get mad with someone, you can’t really take time away from them because you’re sitting right next to them. I think now we’ve become much better friends. Definitely I consider them my best friends, and I think the bus really helps because we’ve all got our separate spaces on there, so it’s definitely calmed down a bit.”
I’m trying not to sound bitter here haha but the guys were on several British tv & radio shows and did some cool things I never got to see/hear (ex: Gonzo with Zane Lowe). But some fans were super kind and taped segments like this! I really felt like I was across an ocean trying to see scraps of all the amazing things that were happening far away. P!ATD was an American band, but the UK got so much cool stuff first from them throughout 2006.
Ryan had a mini ryhawk going on by this point.
A journalist in Glasgow commented on how much cereal was in the band’s dressing room and Brendon said “Yeah, thank God! That’s pretty much all I eat!”
Brendon chopped off his hair in Paris at the start of May. I saw footage from the show in the Netherlands the next day before I saw anything from Paris, but here’s a clip.
the band started playing more cee-lo (which only seems important because of how often they mentioned that).
they mentioned a couple times that Ryan usually slept in, so Brendon had to wake him up for soundcheck.
The BIBIYD single was released in the UK when the band left.
the guys told fans that they were planning on doing a video for Build God.
The band realllllly could have used personal security on this tour. Sometimes fans would jokingly refer to Jack Marin as “security” since he ended up having to escort or protect them at times (like when he chucked Fran offstage in the Netherlands).
THE ASTORIA SHOW:
The Astoria show was a really big deal! I suppose we later had the KROQ Weenie Roast footage too, but the Astoria show felt like the Fever-era show (until the Live in Denver dvd was released towards the end of the year). Both the Astoria & Denver shows actually followed the same pattern: those weren’t the best performances during each tour because the band was too conscious that they were being filmed.
Even some professional reviews mentioned that the other shows in April were better than the Astoria. They said that the band had been more stiff & reserved at the Astoria... it sounded like the guys held back.
Here’s this short clip about fans waiting before the show.
here’s most of the show (I didn’t have the Nails for Breakfast file):
youtube
P!ATD + FORGIVE DURDEN:
Forgive Durden had opened for P!ATD in December 2005, but the bands got to know each other better on this tour. Both Brendon & Ryan plugged Forgive Durden in interviews later that year. Ryan also mentioned to Kerrang that “a friend of mine in Forgive Durden turned me on to Tom Waits when we were in the UK... I’ve been listening to him ever since. His voice is so rough and dark. I’d never really heard anything like that.” (About a year later Ryan got some Tom Waits lyrics tattooed on his wrists). One fan went to a restaurant with Ryan & Thomas Dutton on this tour and said that those two had been hanging out. Forgive Durden also had a banjo, which Ryan started playing during Esteban on the next tour. And obviously it’s a bit of a stretch to say that Forgive Durden’s drumming part of their set inspired the NRWC drumline... but Brendon & Spencer did seem to love the idea of a short break where the whole band drummed together.
Oh, and Thomas Dutton was asked in an interview that spring which guy he had a man crush on (from any band) and he replied “Of people I’ve actually seen – it comes across some onstage, but when you see him offstage and you see him just being a crazy, spastic jumping bean, Brendon from Panic! At The Disco, he never stops. He’s just always just a little energizer bunny, and the most charismatic, talented person around. So, him.” Brendon later played an amazing part in Thomas Dutton’s Razia’s Shadow (which Ryan also helped with).
THE SECRET SHOW:
So this is my best understanding: there was an 18+ secret show after Give It A Name in London at the Mean Fiddler that sounded like the highlight of this whole tour and one of the best shows the band ever played. This was nothing like the “secret” show at Bush Hall in August that was announced on P!ATD’s site almost a month ahead of time and had tickets for sale like a totally normal concert. This show was mainly listed in the Frog newsletter, so it actually seemed like a secret show. The story later became that the show was at a club called Frog, but my understanding at the time was that there was a recurring event called Frog and it happened at the Mean Fiddler? (My lack of solid info on this whole UK trip made me sad... hopefully someone else knows more).
Anyways, the important part is that this show sounded amazing! P!ATD went onstage around 1am and it honestly sounded like one of the best or most energetic/fun shows they ever played. The fans who were there said that the band was grinning almost the whole time, that they played their entire album, and it was definitely their best performance yet. I don’t know how to describe this, but every review/story felt like it was trying to pinpoint a magical quality about the show… like the band was finally fully themselves on that small stage in the middle of the night. Fans were dancing onstage with Brendon, people from other bands were goofing around, and everything just sounded so incredibly happy. Ryan even said it was the most fun they’d had in a long time.
Yeah, that’s one of the top 3 shows I’d want to go back in time for.
WHAT SOME FANS WERE LIKE:
The band left the secret show a couple hours later and told the crowd that they had to fly to Manchester to be there that same morning for the second day of Give It A Name. Two different fans who were watching the band leave said a girl followed the band all the way to their car and was trying to get the guys to sign her stuff and take pictures with her… and obviously she knew they were in a hurry.
Way too many fans during this tour would share stories about how the guys were arrogant, mean, or hated their fanbase because they would just ignore fans and walk straight to their car. I’m not saying that every single story was like the situation above, but I’m positive one of the stories I saw was from that particular girl who was “snubbed” by an exhausted band trying to get to their next festival. After this tour, Ryan told Kerrang:
“It’s getting harder [to deal with fans]. Since the band is getting bigger, we have a different kind of fan now. We can’t go out after shows and meet fans like we used to because it causes a riot. Even if we’re there for two hours we can’t sign autographs for everybody, so we’re always the bad guys. It hurts. It’s hard not to think about. They’re so demanding. I just wish they were more understanding.”
Ryan still lurked online, so the guys were aware of what people were saying.
Some British fans who had seen P!ATD in January when they were able to personally meet kids and chat for a short time were surprised & offended to find themselves stuck behind a barrier with hordes of other screaming fans now. Sometimes people were just lucky to catch a glimpse of the band ducking into a building or running to their bus. A decent amount of UK fans were indignant that it felt like they no longer mattered as fans and the band didn’t care about them (that’s putting their comments lightly). There were definitely rumors building online that all four guys were mean & arrogant. To me, it looked like fans just assumed that the band’s schedule must be open since they were offstage, and didn’t stop to consider that the guys might be tired, hungry, shy, sick, had to be somewhere else, or just didn’t feel safe meeting fans without reliable security.
But other fans reported that the band spent a lot of time signing stuff and greeting people at other shows. In an interview during this tour, Spencer said “We always go out and sign stuff and do pictures.” Brendon even stayed outside one of the venues to greet fans by himself for as long as he could. A ton of people were saying that the guys were very sweet, polite, and clearly not used to the attention yet. The band was also super apologetic to fans about how chaotic everything had become… it was almost like they were trying to process it themselves. I heard Brendon even apologized directly onstage to one crowd for not being able to talk to fans earlier.
However, there were still stories of Brendon, Ryan, and Spencer running away from fans or hiding... so they hadn’t quite adjusted yet.
Kerrang: Did you ever imagine that you’d be fronting a band like Panic? Brendon: Never. I always pictured myself as a guitar player or a drummer, but never the singer. Kerrang: How are you coping with being a sex symbol? Brendon: I honestly don’t look at it that way. I’m not like, ‘oh man I’m so sexy!’ I’m actually the opposite, so it’s ridiculous to be thought of like that. I was never the guy in school who girls thought was cute. They always thought I was like a brother, so it’s weird. Kerrang: Are you worried fame will mess you up? Brendon: … I’m still me – I’m the same Brendon that everybody thought was weird! I loved the attention when I was a little kid but I dread it now. It’s really turned. I’d rather be seen as a musician, not a sex symbol or something like that.
Brendon also told Kerrang that “sometimes it’s just harder to come out and meet people because it gets so stressful. We get mobbed. You’ll be talking to one fan and there will be 10 others pulling your shoulder and going ‘come over here.’ So it can get kind of insane.”
Sometimes fans were waiting outside the band’s tour bus before the sun even came up. Several people in different cities mentioned seeing Spencer walking around on his own during the day... he wasn’t recognized as often so maybe he still had the freedom to do that. (Again, I have no idea where Brent was during any of these stories. He was such a blank space in the band by this point).
Spencer said in an interview during this season:
“It’s always weird when we walk out of the bus and I’ve been up for five minutes and I’m trying to find Starbucks and people want to take pictures. It’s kind of like ‘I don’t know if I look my best right now, so I don’t know if it’s the best idea for me to take a picture with you seeing as it’s probably going to end up on Myspace in four hours.’ But it’s great… In Europe, rather than party I’d rather get up early and go walk around and see things I’ve never seen before.”
Everyone in P!ATD had mentioned at some point in interviews that Brendon had been drinking a lot while he was touring with William Beckett earlier that year. It sounded like Brendon’s partying had calmed down by April, though.
RANDOM INTERVIEW QUOTES FROM THIS TOUR:
Spencer to Kerrang: “Nobody in our band really drinks at all or does anything. We don’t really party that much. We’re focused and nervous during the day, and then as soon as we’re done playing we’re so tired we just want to go back to bus, watch a movie, and go to sleep…”
Spencer: “Nothing ever goes out with our name on it without us approving it. So if you ever see a lighter or something with our name on it, it’s not from us. We’re trying to keep in control of everything as best we can.”
Brendon to Young Scot in Glasgow (he was asked what’s the best & worst thing about being in a popular band): “Being in a what band?! I don’t know. It’s just weird for us, because we didn’t really want to be a band in order to get big – we just wanted to play music that we enjoy playing. It’s good because our careers are doing well. I guess it sucks because now we’re getting more popular we can’t go out any more and talk to fans, because we’d be there until, like, five in the morning or whatever. So that kind of sucks that we’re kind of losing the intimacy with our fans. But we’ll figure out different ways to regain that.”
Brendon to Young Scot in Glasgow (he was asked if he preferred being on the road or in the studio): “I really love both. They’re so different. When you’re on the road you’re in so many different places and there’s so many different people that you meet and there’s a lot of crazy things that can go on, on the road. It’s really exciting and there’s never a dull moment on tour. I mean, it’s really busy and there’s a lot of press and stuff, but at the same time you get to hang out with all these bands that you enjoy their company, and you get to make new friends. And the studio is awesome because that’s where all the creativity comes in and you get to really throw around ideas and pretty much do whatever you want because there’s all these possibilities. It’s really fun for us to create music. We have a blast doing both, so I can’t really single one out.“
Ryan to Contactmusic.com in late April: “We came over here in January with The Acadamy Is... which was for about two weeks, so I dunno, it’s been like, really quick… like ‘how the hell?!’ at how big we’d gotten over here!”
Spencer: “It’s definitely surprising how fast everything’s taken off. Before this I had never even been out of the country, and now this is my second time in the UK and we just went to Japan, which is unbelievable because I’m only 18. Now all this stuff has allowed us to start thinking into the future, what we’re going to be able to do now that we’re on a bigger level. It’s exciting. With our live shows we’re trying to get a little more theatrical, involving stage props and stuff. And with our videos we’ll be able to spend a little bit more money.”
Brendon to Young Scot in Glasgow: “We’re kind of boring. We just hang out with each other and talk and listen to music and read.”
Kerrang: What do your families make of what’s been happening Spencer: They can’t believe it, because the average parent’s thoughts on a band is like, ‘yeah this is fine, but it’s not what you’re going to do with your career.’ At the beginning they were a little more skeptical of it, but now when they can turn on MTV and see our video or see an article in Rolling Stone, that’s nice for them to be able to see what we’re actually doing.
in NME: The weight of underwear that has to be scooped off the stage floor at the end of their UK gigs suggested the ladies were enjoying themselves a little too much too…“It happens fairly regularly,” Ross offers, looking slightly coy. “We give it all to our techs. We don’t know what happens to them after that.” Brendon sits up, suddenly rather excited. “It’s a nice gesture, but that shit costs money!”
REVIEW EXCERPTS & “PAYING DUES:”
the Kerrang review of Give It A Name in London: “Panic! at the Disco would surely have been higher on the bill, such has been their meteoric rise. The deafening howls of adoration that greet frontman Brendon Urie as he struts onstage in a top hat and tails pays testament to this, as does the mass rush towards them... Allowing themselves more imperfections than at their recent Astoria show, they seem more real.”
a Kerrang review of the Astoria show with the heading ‘Panic! at the Disco find their feet on first headlining tour:’ “Urie is a fascinating frontman, his melodies imperious, soaring, and note-perfect. The band behind him is powerful and tight too, inserting a life urgency that’s absent from the record. Meanwhile the crowd are in raptures, screams reaching ear-splitting levels. They probably would have let P!ATD get away with anything tonight, instead they witness what could be the birth of something special.”
musicOMH’s review of the Astoria show: Tonight, Panic! At the Disco are heroes before they have even sung a note, backed by a small army of manic devotion, who holler back every word like they are permanently engrained... They might be barely older than most of the crowd here tonight, with only one album’s worth of material and on their first ever headlining tour of anywhere, but they have one cuff-ripping ace up their sleeve: they don’t know what filler is... By bypassing the typical Emo mould of distorted guitars and whining which clots up the genre, they sound fresher and more important than much of their peers. I Write Sins Not Tragedies shimmers with vaudeville keys, before exploding with thunderstorm drums and a chorus which could fell a redwood, while during Time to Dance, [I turn] around to see a group of boys and girls actually crying. Boyish good looks? Check. Emotional-without-being-contrived lyrics? Indeed. Army of internet equipped, close-to-hysterical fans? In abundance. The odds look good for Panic! At the Disco.
Designer Magazine: “Fast forward to April 22nd at the Manchester Academy and the surrounding roads are barricaded, security guards walk along the barriers stopping fans from getting a glimpse of their favourite new band… what Panic! At The Disco have achieved in 4 months normally takes bands 4 years.”
P!ATD really had to jump into the role of a big, experienced band this spring and just hope that they could improve enough each week to look like they “deserved” to be there. A lot of bands were still bitter that P!ATD had an extremely lucky break and didn’t have to “pay their dues.” More and more musicians were speaking out (probably because interviewers brought it up more now) and they said that the internet gave P!ATD an advantage that others never had. For example, Tyson from the All-American Rejects made some comments about how his band worked so hard for years and then P!ATD basically posted a few demos online and then got an international fanbase. His point that it was harder to get discovered a couple years ago was true, and most fans agreed that P!ATD did get a lucky break... but at the same time, P!ATD was able to take advantage of that lucky break because they were good & worked SO hard. The criticism about “not paying their dues” was a really big topic in 2006, so I’ll just say that I thought that in some ways P!ATD was in a trickier position than other bands because they had to cram years of work into an intense few months that were heavily scrutinized. A band that had only been playing live shows for half a year could have easily been a fumbling, embarrassing mess when they found themselves on big tours & national tv, but P!ATD worked really hard and actually pulled it off. Plus, they were doing something worth paying attention to.
Kerrang asked Spencer if he’d encountered jealousy in other bands and Spencer replied: “You hear stuff. We’ve toured with bands who’ve said ‘before we went on this tour I was thinking f— Panic! at the Disco because why should it be that easy for them?’ And then those bands at the end of the tour will tell us their opinion has changed because we’re not arrogant or cocky about our band. We realize how lucky we are and how great an opportunity this is.”
RELEVANT SITE UPDATES & LIVEJOURNAL ENTRIES:
May 2: new uk single out now We're in France now, which is pretty amazing, but we already miss the UK. We had an amazing time again, especially at Frog on Saturday night. Thanks to everybody who came out to see our little "secret: show that night. It was the most fun we've had in a long time. If you didn't know, we just released a new single over there. You can pick up "But It's Better If You Do" on vinyl or cd single by heading to www.hmv.com. The b-sides on each format are different, so definitely check them out. We just announced a couple radio shows in California at the start of tour, but there are still more dates to come. Hang tight.See you guys at Bamboozle... - ryan
There were no livejournal entries from Ryan left for this season when fans went back to grab stuff with ljseek after he deleted his account (and nothing in particular sticks out in my memory). The only one for Brendon was on May 2nd...he left it in quotes so those aren’t from me:
"ernest hemingway once wrote 'the world is a fine place and worth fighting for’... paris, france. they hate speaking english and love making you look stupid. musee de louvre, eiffel tower, notre dame. je ne vous aime pas ...i agree with the second part.”
From an AMP interview with Ryan right after this tour:
“We hear from people, ‘oh I saw you in this magazine,’ or ‘I saw you on TV,’ and it’s just weird because we don’t even see it. We just live on a bus and play shows. We have situations sometimes that still surprise us because we don’t really realize how big it’s gotten. Like over in the UK we were doing an acoustic in-store in Scotland. And the kids were going crazy. When we were leaving, we got in our car and all of these kids just jumped on the car, they surrounded it, and we had to get like ten security people to get them off the car. We started driving down the street and like 50 kids were chasing the car for about a mile. And they caught up. It was crazy. I couldn’t believe that people would do that for my band.”

Map of the Soul: 7
After a ~315 day drought without new music and a comeback from the legends, we are finally back with MOTS: 7! It been a hot minute since ive done a album review (solely for myself LMAO) so lets get back into it bc this album is a home run
Interlude: Shadow. Here we have the extended version of the interlude. can i just say that the lyrics to this masterpiece are so real and true. its not suga speaking nor is it agust d, this is min yoongi speaking of his internal conflict with the celebrity life, which is heartbreaking. on another note, the visuals of the mv are stunning and the ending--dont u just wanna go apeshit??? truly a great addition to the album!
Black Swan. sister black swan has been with us for a month-ish now? it still bumps. HARD. i blasted this to and from my drive to work to the point where i was scared if id get sick of the song but that didnt happen. the way how its hard to pinpoint when and where a member would sing/rap because they INTENTIONALLY wanted the voices to blend as if they were one body. this is the group’s narrative on how no matter how passionate one is on a certain craft, when they lose that drive, its like a death. and it is up to themselves to spark that love and interest once again. a very relatable story across various media, talents, skills, etc.
Filter. When I first heard that this was a jimin solo showcasing the many sides of Jimin, i thought that it was going to be a sad ballad to kind of follow the theme mots: 7 seemed to give off; thought that it would talk about how he has to force personas onto himself to appeal to the masses, but it is the complete opposite. Jimin is all the faces he puts on, he can be cute, sweet, and caring Jimin but he is also a sexy, flirty young man that can attract any living being. how he switches from falsettos to a lower register voice is beyond me, what a versatile one he is! <3
My Time. Moving onto jungkook’s solo, I knew the lyrics were going to be sad especially when it seems to compare himself to others his age. How he speaks about how fast time runs for him, how his childhood and current life is not of the average 22 year old (LIKE UM HERE I AM, SAME AGE AS JUNGKOOK AND IM NORMAL AF while he’s out here breaking records?? WOW). but the life of jungoo can be a bit overwhelming, completely understandable. I just want our boi JK to know that he can be himself and live freely despite such different circumstances. On another note, the groove of this track is so GOOD. it reminds me of Ari and ugh i LIVE for this jam
Louder Than Bombs. When the track started, I could totally tell Troye Sivan helped produce it, it has such a unique sound that only Troye would use. It sounds like this song would totally be on a movie soundtrack IDK WHY. like, i can picture it during an apocalypse movie sldkjg im not completely sure what the meaning is to the song (bc im big stupid) but i feel like its a track saying that no matter the struggles, they will continue to sing confidently, strongly, and wholly to us endlessly. beautiful, just beautiful.
ON. Moving on to the title track of MOTS: 7! I’m very picky about strong anthem-type songs but ON is actually p addicting HAHA There’s a background sound that repeats in the back that sounds like Sans from Undertale, aint that wild LMAO but anyways, the Manifesto Film was crazy good. The drums, the band, the breakdown of it all? UNBELIEVABLE. Also, JK’s vocals during the bridge? H O W. That breakdown tho...oof, that was amazing. They still dance with the thirst that rookie bts would and i think thats why ppl are so drawn to them no matter how many years pass. Fun fact: the choreographer of ON as well as Dionysus actually is from my city in Hawaii and we went to the same high school THATS WILD. the talent she holds!
UGH! Rap line ATE this shit, are we KIDDING. An ode to all the hate comments that we receive, u can see how fed up they are. They made POINTS and we all agree, its the damn law. The way how they opened up with a gunshot, we knew it was coming. Everyone joked about how we bout to hear some gunshots on this album, well they threw ALL of it on this track. Can i just say that Hobi’s verse tho? it hits different, it really do. When they went “ahem, ahem. ahem, ahem-ahem, YOUR AHEM. AHEM-AHEM--” OOOOOUGH i felt that shit!! god, imagine this in concert...the building aint ready!
0:00 (Zero O’ clock). Now we have the vocal line track, we knew they were bout to present some vocals. Great sound, slow and reflecting. Not the first track I’d listen to but it is a great listen. The lyrics tho get to me. The way how they comfort us and say that life can be rough but you can be happy. no matter what happens, with the turning of the clock to 0:00, its a brand new day and we can make the day better. what a powerful message that all of us need to hear once in a while. we will be happy guys, we deserve to be.
Inner Child. Tae’s solo which is a message to his young self. I expected a slow ballad filled with his warm vocals reminiscent of Winter Bear, 4 o’ clock, and Scenery but boi was I wrong. He has this sunset glow voice that wraps u so warmly and the sound is just so happy, pure, and innocent. Its a hopeful message to his younger self on how we will change and be the amazing person we want to or will be. I was sobbing at this song, I tell u. It was 2:00 am in the morning and I was sobbing into my pillow. Imagine comforting your past self that everything will be okay and to take ur hand, it will be all worth it in the end. When he sang “ur my boy, my boy, my boy, my boy!” Ugh...the tears!
Friends. When I heard this was a vmin duet expressing their friendship with each other, I knew it was going to be so emotional! I didn’t expect such a fun, poppy sound tho. They truly are soulmates, the love they have for each other is so wholesome and real, it truly exhibits the love I have for my friends--they’ve been with me through thick and thin, during happy and sad times; the amounts of serotonin they give me is just HHHH. The way how Tae and Jimin have been friends since high school until now is just ugh...we love it. Towards the end when they started singing “you are my soulmate!” towards each other, i started sobbing so hard because WOW. the shivers i felt, this song made me so happy and full!
Moon. Next we have Jin’s solo which is an ode to us army’s. And on another perspective, this is a song from the moon (jin) to the Earth (army)--i have tears in my eyes. The lyrics especially got me in a chokehold and made me sob, the way how he says that he will always be by our side no matter what, the same way how we are there for him...god. The chorus really gets to me, it feels so happy and thankful and I just want to tell Jin that I will forever follow him and the boys. They’ve been with me for years now and I will continue to support, love, and listen to them. Ily to the moon and back, our moon.
Respect. I didn’t expect a Namgi duet but HERE WE ARE. Goddd when i heard that i was SO EXCITE. They’ve known each other for +10 years now and they never miss the chance to tell everyone that they’ve been friends for that long. Not @ how they disliked each other at first but grew to be so mf close, to the point where their family. Ughhh, im so uwu rn. Im so happy, so so happy that Nams started it with AYO SUGA; i SCREAMED. Also, i heard that they recorded it in one take and i could see how much fun they had--especially considering that their rap styles are completely different. Even tho in the song they joke about not knowing what the word Respect means, we know...we just KNOW the high amounts of respect they have for each other. As they mentioned before, Yoon’s respects towards Nams’ leadership and care towards everyone and Nams’ respect towards Yoon’s love and passion for music and producing. Peak comedy is Yoongs overloading on autotune during his parts to the point where its intentional. Bless Namgi.
We are Bulletproof: The Eternal. I felt like a CLOWN when this track started. Like everyone, i thought we were going to have a third installment similar to that of the strong, hip-hop, gunshot-filled part 1 and 2 of we are bulletproof, but we were met with soft vocals and rap. The lyrics tho get to me. This truly was a song about their entire journey and i felt like I experienced all years with them. They’ve been through so much and the way how they sang “we are we are together/forever bulletproof!” They are proud of where they came from and it has stuck with them till now. They are such real people...i cry. ALSO the “We were only seven, but we have you all now.” Whenever i see pictures of their debut fanmeets/concerts vs now its just crazy. imagine singing as an entire being during concerts when they start “OOOOH OH OHH” im so immensely proud of the feats they’ve reached and im excited on what they do next! <3
Outro: Ego. The way how he started it with the fitness gram pacer test just like in previous albums, ugh what a throwback! this song is such a Hobi track, its fun, dance-inducing and its just so FEEL GOOD. the way how he switches flows and is capable of doing so is *chef’s kiss* the way how he speaks about the path he takes is difficult but he doesnt regret it...SOBS also the mv??? UGH SO CUTE. the flashbacks too;; i cry
ON (feat. Sia). With this track, there’s not much extra I can say, all my opinions still stand with the original track wit ot7. I jokingly told my friend that if Sia is gonna be on the track “hey nanana’ing” the same why Halsey was only “oh my my my’ing” i will ctfu. and...welp, that was what happened. I do love Sia tho so props to her!
Overall: I initially thought that MOTS: 7 was going to be a dark, ballad-filled album but it was anything but. It had so much fun songs, the lyrics are again, so deep and meaningful--it pulls at your heartstrings. It felt so raw, personal, emotional, and i love it in all its being. The boys will continue to amaze me no matter what they put out and i forever and endlessly will support and love them the same way they do for us. MOTS: 7 is a masterpiece and im in love
#trish speaks#map of the soul#7#seven#mots#mots 7#map of the soul 7#bts#i do this as a tradition at this point from...maybe WINGS album#so idc if its just me rambling and being mf cringey i just needed a place to rant about good music and cool ppl lol#yall can ignore this dis just a thing for me to let out my emotions lmao#anyway imma go back to drawing haikyuu pretty setters
