this is a spinning-circles-in-the-office-chair thought but how did salem find out how the relics work. she knows the lamp has a “password” and a limited number of questions, and that using the staff to create something will destroy its previous creation.
we know she’s never used the lamp before, otherwise she’d have known jinn’s name. it’s possible she had the staff at one point and lost it, although i’m skeptical of ozma’s ability to get it back from her if she did—man is a dreadful strategist. she doesn’t seem to know what the relic of choice is: the lamp, the staff, the sword, and “the beacon relic.”
spins chair.
the way her expression changes when ruby says “we’ve seen what you’re capable of. the lamp showed us.” salem doesn’t react to the interruption in any way until she hears the lamp showed us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
from ironwood, we know that ozpin told the inner circle that the lamp can answer three questions per century and that the questions were all used up before ozpin sealed the lamp in the vault. we also know that ozpin used the staff to raise atlas at a point when ironwood was already part of the inner circle, meaning within the last couple decades, which necessitated giving a similar explanation of what the staff can do and its limitations to the whole inner circle; in v7 ironwood knows the staff can only make one thing at a time.
salem is startled, and then coldly irritated, when she hears ruby say the lamp showed us.
she’s not upset because the girls learned the truth; she’s upset because all the information salem has about the relics came to her via member(s) of ozpin’s inner circle, and ruby just revealed that at least one thing ozpin told his acolytes was a lie. as far as salem knew before that moment, the lamp was dormant. useless to her. when ruby says “the lamp showed us,” both the assertion that the lamp is out of questions and that the lamp only has a finite number of questions it can answer are thrown into question.
given what salem does immediately after getting her hands on the lamp a few hours later…
“the lamp showed us” switches salem’s train of thought to “the lamp is still usable?” and then to “if that’s so, i could ask it questions myself” and then to “we still haven’t uncovered the location of the beacon relic” and she’s only half-listening to what ruby says to her while she turns this over in her mind and what comes out of her mouth is “your mother said those words to me,” because summer rose is the one who told her, per ozpin, that the lamp was all out of questions. “she was wrong, too.”

Getting angry at how the writers Jinn favored team rwby with a whole ass cinematic exposition dump while shrugging Oz's question off with two words. She doesn't even grant him the courtesy of a hint! Would it really have been that hard for her to add some sort of clarification like "you cannot defeat her but you can guide the simple soul that can" or "should you find yourself with silver eyes, you may have a chance"?
If that Ozcarnation came before the schools' conception, it would add so much more meaning to them and throw far more shade on Oz than lying and magic birds

[ @the-gray-maiden // for ozpin ]
Meeting student outside the comforting emptiness of the headmaster’s office always makes him uneasy—even if the student in question isn’t, strictly speaking, a student anymore. Given the circumstances, though, extending an invitation to the campus had struck Ozpin as an insensitive thing to do. So here they are: wrapped in heavy silence on a bench in the little park a few blocks away from the guildhouse where Lia had, not an hour ago, been allowed on the thinnest of margins to keep her license. For what little it might be worth to her now.
“I’m… so sorry,” Ozpin says at last. Not yet half a year gone by since the massacre, and he cannot fathom the violence it has done to her soul to be swept so immediately into this furious controversy. “Both for the losses you have suffered and that I could not do more to shield you from—that.”
He makes a feeble gesture toward the guildhouse, the words hollow for knowing that it isn’t over; there is still the police investigation, the council’s inquiry at Beacon, the punishing court of public opinion.
“…None of it is your fault,” he adds. “People often try to comfort themselves in the wake of tragedy by finding someone to blame; it’s frightening to admit that terrible things can happen for no reason.” Or for reasons more horrifying than anyone partaking in this firestorm could imagine. “It has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with the fears of the public.” A pause. “If there is anything more I can do to help…”

add this to the list of goofy ass personal aus for me and me alone
au where everythings the same but Ozpin's blind thats all
#masky says#again its called SELF indulgence for a reason#im simple i like blind characters who use their blindness to their advantage#ozpin wouldnt be able to rely on ozymandias or any other past lives for sight since they'd need to use HIS body's senses to detect anything#no one can see. its a new experience for almost ever life i'd imagine#but ozpin's grown up without his sight so he knows how to navigate the scary world#hes not totally blind. he can see...vague shapes. very vague.#but thats it.#long memory works as a normal cane and ur usual blind cane#hes memorized beacon's halls along with the usual rush of students and which way they'd come and go to classes so he doesnt get lost in the#-rush if hes ever goin from one place to another alone#glynda usually sticks by his side to act as his guide if hes goin somewhere super crowded#tho i mostly like it cause the vibe of ozpin bein one of those characters who keeps their eyes closed all the time is a VIBE#hes still a top huntsman. hes still the headmaster. hes still one of ozma's many lives#but hes blind. thats all that changes and it changes nothing and also everything#qrow acting as a seeing eye bird when ozpin asks for his help#sitting on his shoulder and cawing if oz nearly bumps into a wall or someone#i know its not real evidence but i do like ozpin memorizing the feel of qrow's facial features#the scruff of his beard the way his skin dips in places where scars linger#he likes touching people hes very touchy. its the best way he knows to see in his own personal way#he wouldnt notice ruby's silver eyes. he'd need to be told later. glynda probably mentions it making ozpin interested even further in her-#-progress and acceptance into his academy

Random thought I had for a while
Does Raven had/has a portal to Ozpin????
Because Oz trusted the twins a lot to give them the bird magic, I think they trusted him back
But enough for a portal??? Not sure...
Like Oz's lies felt personal, like a broken promise?
And she already left the inner circle so if she had one I'm sure she's not using it
But imagine when Ozpin dies in the fall of beacon, would Raven feel the portal disappear? Would she care? Does it change into a portal to Oscar?
Does she make a portal to the new host just to know Oz's new face?

*Jaune and Emerald talking while drinking coffee*
Weiss: What are they doing?
Ren: Apparently, Emerald's mother grew up in the same region of Vale as Jaune's father, and taught Emerald how to speak in old Eastern Valerian
Weiss: Really? I didn't know Jaune spoke old Eastern Valerian
Ren: Neither did we until Emerald cussed in it and Jaune was shocked to hear it, since then they both sometimes converse in the language
Weiss: *looking back at them with intrigue*
Jaune: Je pense... j'adorerais, Emerald
Emerald: Bon choix, Jaune
*both set down their cups and quickly rush upstairs*
Weiss: Where are they going?
Oscar: *blushing because Ozpin translated for him* I-I don't think we should bother them for a while...

Family
Ruby: F*** you!
Raven: F*** you!
Yang: F*** you!!
Raven: F*** you!!
Qrow: F*** you!!!
Jaune: Why are they screaming at each other?
Nora: I don’t know. Probably, because Raven abandoned them and is the worst mother ever.
Jaune: Isn’t that your mom then?
Nora: F*** you.
Jaune: Yep. Anyways… Yo!
RYBB: WHAT?!!!
Jaune: Can’t you all talk about this? You know like a family.
RYBB: f-
Jaune: Try me. Try me and see what happens. Understand, you all can be or are on my shit list. I already have my issues with my family. I already talked to Winter about hers. I will humble all of you.
Raven: Look kid this has-
Jaune: It’s crazy how you know about family but abandoned your kin for a bunch of strangers.
Raven: …
Jaune: It’s crazy how you’re your daughter's biggest stalker but just like one you can barely have a conversation with her.  And attempt to take her life the moment your views differ from one another.
Raven: …
Jaune: It’s crazy how you risked your tribe, only to give the relic to your daughter, probably the only present you’ll ever give her out the years of her life. And what’s insane is you did all that because you didn’t want to deal with Salem even though she held your tribe hostage. Speaking of your tribe where are they now?
Raven: *silent*
Jaune: Sit you no leadership, die-hard shogun ass down.
Raven: *sit down*
Qrow: Well damn kid-
Jaune: Bitch I’m older than you now but even before that I was more man than you.
Qrow: Now hold-
Jaune: I will admit you showed up when Tyrian came. However, you want to know why I was pissed and made those assumptions?
Qrow: I mean I saved Ruby and your lives.
Jaune: Yeah. You were watching us from a distance. Good. But you were late. Which means when you were late we encountered Grimm. Now what could cause that?
Qrow: Um…
Jaune: You were drunk.
Qrow: Well-
Jaune: Back to the journey to Mistral and after you could have been more useful in almost every event.
Qrow: Woah kid I was-
Jaune: Dude when you couldn’t find any hunters, you didn’t even bother trying to help any of us improve. When we were trapped in a room with Salem's allies and your sister, your first thought was to stand around, do nothing, and find out.
Qrow: Okay b-
Jaune: Raven kicked your ass. Hazel punched your back out. And the only one you were protecting was Oscar. What happened to Ruby and Yang being your nieces? Speaking of Oscar didn’t you punch him in the face and never apologize for it?
Qrow: That was for Ozpin.
Jaune: In Oscar’s body, don't try to defend this. Suppose a huntsman saw that, would you not be arrested?
Qrow: Okay now that I think about it-
Jaune: Oh, and when Oscar went missing what the f*** were you doing? Getting drunk, again.
Qrow: I was having a hard time.
Jaune: Screw you.
Qrow: Well at least I didn’t endanger my friends.
Jaune: At least I didn’t get one of my friends killed. Like with Clover. Which I will say, great job in letting Tyrian escape. It’s crazy how even sober you are still an idiot. Also, you’re a fraud. Qrow: Well I-
Jaune: Like now there is no comparing us, I’ve been through more shit than you will ever imagine. And I wasn’t given a choice. You were. And that’s misfortunate. Your nieces almost died a couple of times and you weren’t there to help them. I was. God I’m starting to realize why your team is a mess and why, Tai, hates you. You are both a downer and a deadbeat. Pick a struggle.
Qrow: *silent and sits with Raven*
Jaune: *stares at Ruby and Yang*
Yang and Ruby: *sat down immediately*
Jaune: So what are you all going to do?
RYBB: Talk like a family.
Jaune: Good. Now you excuse me I need to write a letter to my mother who I am not on the best of terms, right now. Bye.
Nora: Jaune? Jaune, is there something you want to talk about? I’m openly available.
Jaune: F*** you too, Nora.
Qrow: How long was he on that island?
Ruby: Uncle Qrow, we had our first argument on that island.
Qrow: Oh… s***.

Takeaways from the Volume 9 Epilogue:
--
One thing I really like about Oscar’s ‘If there was anything I wish I could borrow from you…’ monologue is that it laid out/confirmed something I’ve always felt was a major aspect of Oscar’s dynamic with Ruby that I nonetheless feel a lot of the fandom has missed: That Oscar very much sees Ruby as a mentor and an example to follow, and how their dynamic is specifically a foil to what we saw between Ruby and Ozpin. That Ruby acts as a mentor and example to Oscar in the same way Ozpin was to Ruby, and that Ruby is a far BETTER mentor and example to Oscar than Ozpin ever was to her. Which, as an aside, is a dynamic I can’t help but feel a lot of people have been misinterpreting as ‘ship-teasing’ and is one of the main reasons I’ve simply never been able to see Oscar as any kind of viable love-interest to Ruby. Frankly the dynamic of ‘Ruby is the mentor and example to Oscar that Ozpin couldn’t be for her’ is simply so much more INTERESTING than any kind of romance could ever hope to be.
--
Even in animatic form, Winter basically going overdrive on the maiden powers was a sight to behold. And her own monologue had all the self-deprecation we were expecting. Our girl is clearly holding on by a thread and it’s going to be REAL interesting seeing how she reacts and adjusts to her sister not actually being dead. As in, I can imagine a situation where Winter tries to throw herself into a heroic sacrifice with the belief that Weiss would make a better Maiden than her.
Also, Winter’s monologue giving major focus to how Penny is super-super-dead-dead-and-definitely-not-coming-back-for-really-realsies, as she is talking to the sister who she ALSO believes is DEFINITELY also dead? Specifically with the words that Penny is gone, when Penny’s last words to her were that she’d be ‘part of you’?
Yeah, there is no way in hell we’ve seen the last of Penny XD
--
The CROWN. Like it was only a few shots, but as someone who read the CFVY Books (which you totally should if you haven’t, they’re great), holy shit I was NOT expecting them to pop up here.
I mean, in hindsight it makes perfect sense that they’d be involved in Volume 10. They’re basically Vacuo’s equivalent to Vale’s criminal element and the White Fang splinter faction as Salem’s co-opted insurgency group, with Jax and Gillian joining Roman, Adam and Jacques as the latest of Salem’s unwitting patsies. It’s definitely going to be real interesting seeing the crew deal with them. Like it’s really fun to imagine Team RWBY in particular being kind of exasperated at seeing Jax’s probably doing a whole ‘With Salem’s help I shall be King!’ shtick after everything they’ve seen with Roman, Adam and Jacques.
Oh and if you don’t know, Jax has a mind-control semblance, so him trying to use that on Yang could actually lead to a sneaky callback to the Justice League crossover, ie; Yang doing a ‘Yeah, I’m not doing THAT shit again.’ XD
--
Qrow’s whole vibe through this is fascinating. Like his section may have been the one we already saw, but after seeing the abject depression and growing despair of all the other characters, Qrow actually being OPTIMISTIC hit so much harder.
--
Raven showing up at the end is… interesting.
I’ll admit that ever since we saw that specific clip a few months back, I’ve been rather conflicts about Raven showing up to deliver RWBY+J to Vacuo, particularly after Ruby’s tree vision. Like for one it felt a bit random and unnecessary. The tree already deposited the Ever After team outside of Vacuo so they didn’t exactly need help getting there. Not to mention that it kind of clotheslines the story-thread set up by Ruby’s vision; that she now has a reason to track Raven down to get the ANSWERS to what happened to Summer. Finally, it’s just kind of… random? Like where did Raven even come from to get the team?
But now having seen the clip with its intended context, I’m definitely more on board with it. Particularly hearing from Kerry and Eddy that the original ending for the penultimate episode had RWBY+J going through the portal to arrive at their memorial stone, and met by a ‘Mysterious Figure’, ie; Raven. Here it feels like were getting more set up to get answers later as to what Raven was doing at the memorial.
And really, now that I’ve thought about it more, this method kind of puts the thread of Ruby going to Raven for answers even MORE into focus. Like the story reintroduces Raven in the present right after Ruby got a vision basically saying ‘hey, Raven is important’. And now going into Volume 10, we’re pretty much perfectly positioned for Ruby to pull Raven aside for those all-important ‘Why were you fucking my mom? What happened to my mom?’ questions.
--
Finally… yeah that ending hit me a LOT harder than I was expecting. Like that ending was HOPE in its purest form and it was honestly beautiful to see. Particularly right now with the future of the show seeming so uncertain. I’ve personally been optimistic about RWBY’s future (in a manner not unlike Qrow’s vibes I suppose lol), but damn the hopefulness of that ending hit especially hard, and was something I’ll admit I needed. And I imagine the rest of us could use as well.
We'll be getting Volume 10. And 11, and 12, and however many more it takes to finish this story. At this point, I have no doubt of that.

& in fact one of the things that makes salem compelling as a character is this juxtaposition between her personal cruelty and the rightness of her cause; it bears repeating that she chose to live in exile rather than fight back for thousands of years while ozma dedicated himself to the cause of destroying her, and that her war follows on the heels of ozma forging a global alliance and then, as ozpin, abruptly locking down the relics in apparent preparation to summon the brothers back to remnant. if salem’s true goal is to avert the final judgment—get rid of the gods—then it is clear from the historical timeline and the events immediately preceding her commitment to war that she really did not want to go to war.
but with the information she has and the experiences she’s had there really is no other way to achieve her goal – every other possibility requires her to take it on faith that ozma is willing the break from his task now, against all signs to the contrary. he is still openly promoting worship of the brothers and urging everyone to live as if the final judgment will come tomorrow while zealously guarding the relics needed to summon them – no reasonable person would conclude from ozpin’s public actions that he is, in any way, wavering from his task, and so it is wholly irrational to expect salem to just intuit that somehow. and if ozpin is, as he seems to be, more committed than ever and on the brink of summoning the brothers, war is in fact her only recourse.
what makes salem a villain in this story is the abusiveness toward her associates; her individual cruelty, far more than the war of last resort, because the cruelty has no justification. and i think rwby is interested in the tension here, between how long salem refused to fight back and how cruel she is on a personal level. the tenderness with which she speaks of humanity versus her violent resistance to letting herself care about any one specific person.
i think it’s easy to write the cruelty off as a simple matter of salem… not caring, not having any interest in caring – in extremes this is how we get the "spoiled bitch" reading – but the same could be said of ozma; he’s nicer about it but no less willing to use people as disposable tools. why does he lie? why does he manipulate? why does he get violent when his secrets are about to be exposed? you don’t treat people you care about that way.
so ozma has his reasons – the trauma and the cognitive dissonance and the self-hatred and learned helplessness that motivates his submission to the divine mandate, the palliative fairytales, the retreat into dissociation to cope with being forced to exist as a parasite, and so on – and so too does salem, it’s just that hers are made more opaque. what drives this woman who speaks so lovingly of human virtue to treat individual humans like garbage? some of it is sheer alienation – she hasn’t been allowed to participate in civilization in thousands of years, of course she is antisocial – and the trauma of ozma’s betrayal, the deeper trauma of collective punishment, the fear of being hurt again, the resignation to being seen as a monster no matter what she actually does…
which i expect will begin to rise to the surface over the last few volumes. but the point is i do think her villain -> hero arc will turn almost entirely on ending and atoning for the personal cruelty as opposed to the war, and in fact i imagine there may end up being a stretch of the story wherein salem has moved clearly into the ‘good’ camp (as in: made things right between herself and her remaining associates, cinder in particular, and her true end is known to the audience) and still actively in conflict with the vacuo coalition because Her Cause is just. and that’s the kind of complexity rwby is interested in.

Project ARC remake 16
Weiss: *angry* That Dolt! Why didn't he defend himself? It's like he wants to get killed!?
Ren: *looking at Weiss* I don't think he doesn't want to defend but more so that he is incapable. We saw how efficient he was at dispatching Grimms.
Weiss: That's why i don't get it! He could go toe-to-toe with a deathstalker! Why is he struggling against Cardin!?
Ren: I don't know why, but he is unable to attack anyone. He said it was against protocol, but what was he talking about?
Pyrrha: Maybe where he trained, they couldn't fight in exhibition match? Maybe he only learned how to fight against grimms?
Weiss: *rolling her eyes* Pyrrha, you saw just as i how good he was at dodging and weaving. He knows how to fight.
Pyrrha: Then... Maybe he is a pacifist?
Ren: *Thinking* Then why did he choose to come to Beacon? Why not just take the huntsman exam?
Pyrrha: Why didn't you? Would have been easier than coming all this way from Mistral.
Ren: I'm not really good when it comes to fighting grimm. I know i still have a lot to learn.
Weiss: *sigh* When he's back, i'll ask him.
_________
Ozpin: *looking at the camera footage showing Jaune's inability to retaliate against Cardin* ... There must be a way to overwrite his protocol.
Qrow: *drinking a bit* that would be asking the good doctor to remove it. But then again, he might just want to study him. It's not everyday someone is missing part of their soul.
Glynda: *hitting the table with enough force the marble fissured* I REFUSE! *Panting, her aura trying to heal the broken bones in her hand*
Qrow: *jumping from Glynda outburst*
Ozpin: *sigh* His condition isn't getting better Glynda. You know that, right?
Glynda: *grinding her teeth* He's the reason my brother is in this state! *Sitting down* I was supposed to be there for him...
Ozpin: *sigh* It shouldn't have happened. The fact is, Salem found the right person even though we took precautions. We couldn't have known.
_________
Watts: *looking at Pietro* What is it?
Pietro: *scratching the back of his neck* My daughter is asking for an update on Jaune.
Watts: *annoyed* Well, so am i! That damn kid is still missing in action and we STILL haven't found a body!
Pietro: You seem... worried?
Watts: Well of course i am! Imagine if someone with half a brain took him and retro-engineered him!? He's the first fighting prototype to actually be somewhat as good as yours!
Pietro: *shaking his head* Again with that? Penny is my daughter, not just a project to complete or a work in progress.
Watts: *rolling his eyes* You and your damn feelings, i can't understand, really i can't.
Pietro: Really? So the clothes you buy for each and every A.R.C you make, all of them chosen after carefully asking each what their favorite type of clothes and brand are.
Watts: *groan*
Pietro: *laughing* Ah don't worry, i will not ask about the birthday cake in the fridge.
Watts: ... *Sigh* White, made it for Jaune. We know he is alive, his vitals are still transmitted even if they are inconsistent.
Pietro: I see... Well, i will tell Penny the same news as always.
Watts: *looking at Jaune's Vital, seeing his aura getting from 70 to 71* Hm...
Pietro: *who was leaving* What's wrong?
Watts: Well, nothing wrong per say... His aura stayed at 70 for the last month but... It seems to finally get up? I wonder why.

[ @caeruleum-feniks // for ozpin ]
There’s a darker undertow lurking beneath the more familiar celebratory atmosphere of the Vytal Festival. Tension isn’t quite the word for it, but it’s somewhere in the right neighborhood. Ozpin feels a little of it himself as he navigates the fairgrounds, a bright pinprick of vigilance every time his gaze falls on another of James’s mechanical soldiers.
Those gleaming white carapaces: the empty black glass, vacuous and eerily reflective. Perhaps way his skin crawls at the sight of them makes him old-fashioned, but Ozpin has never liked them very much. And unlike the police who would ordinarily safeguard the tournament, the androids draw attention.
He can feel the worry seeping into his face, against his best effort to hold it back, and by the time he locates his quarry, his brow has become too deeply furrowed for the smile he dons to fully reach his eyes.
“Ah, Mr. Gallagher,” Ozpin says warmly—and so offhandedly that no one could guess he’d come down from his tower with the specific intention of finding the boy. “I don’t believe I’ve offered my congratulations yet on your team’s excellent showing in the quads, yet, have I?”
Quite untrue, but the other students within earshot do not know that, and it makes as good an excuse as any. He pauses, listing a little onto Long Memory.
“Well, allow me to do so now; and, if I might borrow a few minutes of your time?” A small gesture away from the souvenir booth, toward a quieter area of the grounds where they can discuss his true concern more openly; an amicable smile. “Team RISE is scheduled to compete in this afternoon’s round of doubles, unless I’m mistaken. How do you feel about your chances?”
