Dude Watership Down’s ending is so good. My neck is the warm sore kind of fuzzy now but it’s alright, headaches are pretty weekly anyways.
#I’m assuming that Hazel became apart of the black rabbits Oswla#it solidifies him as an impressive character#though he himself isn’t super remarkable#he’s a good leader while not having to be strong or extremely clever#he gets a sealed place away in one of the most important rolls because of it#at first I though it was el’s owsla but then I remembered the black rabbit had one#watership down

YES so true!!! All his rabbits start freaking out speculating about the chief rabbit and how it must be fierce and scarred and as big as a hare. Woundword himself is FLOORED trying to imagine who could possibly be chief rabbit to BIGWIG of all rabbits.
Meanwhile Woundword MET Hazel, little raggedy disabled Hazel, and assumed him to be a servant sent by Bigwig. Imagine the LOOK ON HIS FACE when he discovered that THIS was the big tough scary Chief Rabbit who Bigwig was so loyal to. The rabbit who has destroyed Efrafa.
#watership down#its so good#woundwort who chose the largest strongest kittens and trained them all to be part of his owsla#discovering that HAZEL!!!!! is the chief rabbit!!!!#it would be so good

One thing I noticed (and well I did read some people say it) is that the Watership Down adaptations ignore the small detail that Bigwig actually DID believe Fiver. He tells him himself that he does believe in that sort of thing and doesn't understand why Thearah doesn't.
If he later gets upset with him in Cowslip's it was because up to that point Bigwig thought that was already his destiny and saw it as a good place. He had not yet put his faith in Fiver completely so he felt annoyed to see him so insistent on leaving when to him there didn't seem to be any problem with that den, yet he was also a dissatisfied and somewhat hardened Buck looking for a better life and he seemed to have found it. Then when he is saved from the snare his first action is to APOLOGIZE to Fiver and for him to now tell him what they should do.
The movie doesn't dig into that and you assume Bigwig left because he trusted Hazel and didn't like Threarah and the miniseries works much the same only it makes Bigwig much more aggressive and doubtful. The TV series is...weird. As you have Bigwig constantly trying to belittle Fiver and quite dubious. Moreover, the fact that he looks so Simp with Holly and his pride in being "Owsla" makes you doubt why the hell he went with them in the first place.
#watership down#bigwig#lepur stupid thoughts#yeah rambling time#maybe is something lost in translation but i always saw Bigwig like a kind and patient guy that sometimes it could be a bit tough#so i never understand why the adaptations made him so so angry#grumpy/rude and bloody-minded

One of the reasons why I love Watership Down so much is because of how it portrays trauma, fear and pain. Because it’s not always about being terrified or crying with despair. All these emotions have their ugly sides.
And every rabbit shows it in different ways.
Woundwort had his parents killed and later was captured, put in a cage. That is not something the netflix series and tv series randomly pulled out of their sleeve, it was already like that in the book.
Pipkin mentions it himself - all these terrible things Woundwort does, it’s because of his fear. Of humans and predators. Like Pipkin said, he was hurt and it made him hate the whole world. Even in season three, character development doesn’t have to mean changing for the better. Sometimes you change for the worst. He tried to stop the war, it failed, his warren ended up in ruins. So he thought destruction was his legacy.
And he is still afraid. Note that Spartina asks why Woundwort is so afraid of Hazel.
Even in the Netflix series, he claims he is not afraid. But his words contradict his actions, as I said before and that’s why Netflix Woundwort has grown on me. I just love when a characters words contradict their actions!
Hyzenthlay was suspicious, distant and cold towards new rabbits out of fear they could be a spy. She didn’t trust anybody that was not part of her family and she did make sure Clover was ostracized from the rest of the group.
Nelthilta, in her own way, is scared too. Yes, Hyzenthlay says she views everything as a game and the fact that she drops hints to their escape proves that. But Nelthilta also says it herself - the presence of officers overwhelms her. She’s excited to let everyone know she is friends with rebels because they might be stronger in numbers. Her cheeky behavior feels almost as if she hides her fear behind sass.
Nettle became a spy for Orchis out of fear the does would get hurt. It’s obvious she is upset over it, that she actually wants to escape as well. But we see the metaphorical chains Orchis has on her so she cannot stop. Heck, she tells him: “We are going to break out west side of the warren” not “they”. She doesn’t exclude herself from it. And she apologizes to Hyzenthlay - while still lying in the same breath.
Orchis became so blinded with rage for Hyzenthlay and the others after the death of his brother that he stuck with his General until the end - and he would lash out if someone would say something nice about the outsiders. He becomes more unhinged as it goes on.
Vervain would have done everything for his general. You can see how he has a majority of Woundwort’s bad traits. His fear causes him to abuse his power because the punishment of failing scares him. His rank goes to his head because the way Vervain treats his Owsla is exactly how Woundwort treats him and others all the time. He takes his own frustration out on them. His fear is what caused him to rejoin Woundwort as a survival tactic.
Campion became withdrawn from everyone and even downright depressed in season three to a point where he would have prefered to stay dead.
Blackavar‘s whole mental condition in the book is so bad, I don’t even know where to start. He’s with different rabbits now and his advice doesn’t get taken, so he just forgets about it like his opinion never mattered.
Bluebell was hiding behind jokes as a coping mechanism, to get himself and Holly going. Telling his story as the only survivor from underground is the only serious moment he has.
Hawkbit’s snark moments are almost always because he is afraid of the unknown and because he is stressed - it’s the whole reason he keeps lashing out at Fiver. His visions are cryptic.
Pipkin, no matter what he goes through, remains full with kindness. He is good at talking to people, he is good at getting them to open up. But he never extends that kindness to himself. His issues usually fester and then he just blurts them out, something that becomes even worse when Campion makes him promise not to tell everyone he is alive.
“I did everything wrong,” he says when the promise is broken.
Pipkin is kind and forgiving towards others, but generally has a tendency to ignore his own issues and will be unnecessary harsh at himself for it. He would rather help others feel better. Even when he is angry when the war is over and everyone snaps at each other because the warren is filled, he runs off to cool down somewhere.
When he is upset, he deals with it on his own. He will answer when someone asks about it but generally never approaches first.
Blackberry's grief over losing Campion causes her to snap at others.

Random Watership Down Thoughts
- Vervain’s sense of purpose is completely dependent on serving Woundwort and he’s too afraid to find something better for himself.
- Bigwig and Spartina’s relationship came out of nowhere and has the least development when compared to Hazel and Primrose and Blackberry and Campion’s relationship. I’m not saying the relationship is bad or that Spartina isn’t a good fit for Bigwig but Spartina went from being a spy in one episode and his lover in the next with little to no context or growth and they deserve better than that!
- Silverweed is severely misunderstood: He’s a good rabbit but his mystic powers made him an outsider and Cowslip made it worse by using him as a storyteller.
- All of Woundwort’s hate stems from unresolved trauma from his past. Everything he did was inexcusable but he needs serious help (this is especially true in season 3. His mind just split after the first episode of the season).
- Similarly while I’d love to see a redemption arc for Woundwort, I’m not sure if he can be fully forgiven for everything he’s done. I think he’s somewhat more redeemable than Cowslip though (he’s too sick in the head and only does anything if it serves him somehow).
- Hickory and Marigold’s design in the 3rd season kind of bothers me. Their designs are great, but they look so similar that I thought they were siblings at one point (this was back when I first saw them when I was little).
- The Darkhaven rabbits are essentially a rabbit cult but the history of the warren sounds very interesting and relevant to Woundwort’s evil.
- Woundwort, Vervain and Campion’s relationship is the most damaged and abusive in the entire series and you can see how much it affects them: Vervain goes from respecting Campion to hating and resenting him while also conflicted about being loyal to Woundwort and being sick of him, Campion is heavily conflicted about betraying Woundwort and still struggles with it during season 3 but also knows it was the right thing and Woundwort never gets over Campion’s betrayal and tolerates Vervain.
- In a nutshell, Woundwort, Campion and Vervains relationship with each other is what break up and pop songs are made for.
- Blackavar was only relevant in the TV series for a few episodes but then disappeared (despite having a slightly bigger role in the movie) and Buttercup (from the winter episodes) was never seen or heard from again.
- I would have loved to see a spin off series about Moss and the Efrafans after they left Watership Down and see how their dynamics and relationships changed and see Moss as a leader.
- Skree is a missed opportunity to explore other possible allies with elil.
- Hazel and Primrose’s kittens gained some relevancy in season 3 (as the junior owsla) and that is why they are a consistent three with names versus the previous random baby rabbits we saw in season 2.
- Vervain is both an asshole and a coward yet I somehow feel bad for him at season 3.
- If Vervain didn’t survive at the end of season 3, I would have liked to see Granite survive and join Watership Down. That poor giant marshmallow deserves a better life.
- I think Campion had some feelings for Primrose at one point. I don’t know if I’d call it a crush but he does respect her and cares about her.
- Red Stone warren has the saddest history in the whole series.
- Bigwig and Woundwort are my favorites but I like just about everyone in the TV series. I can’t think of a single character I don’t like (yes I even like Vervain and Cowslip).
- The TV series is full of complex characters.
- I don’t know if it was originally written for it but the song Bright Eyes is the theme song for the entire Watership Down franchise and no one can convince me otherwise.
- Bigwig’s design in season 3 kind of reminds me of Cruella’s fur coat in 101 Dalmatians. I don’t know why the designs changed in season 3 but I don’t necessarily dislike them (I actually like Woundwort’s design in season 3 more than his design in season 2. I like Bigwig’s season 3 design too but it made me think he grew old when I was little XD).
- Getting Silverweed out of Cowslip’s warren is arguably one of the few good things Woundwort did. Why? Because, while Woundwort only did it to serve his own purposes, him getting Silverweed would eventually lead to Hazel and the others bringing him to Watership Down and giving him the freedom and happiness he so deserved. He didn’t mean for that to happen but I would count this as an accidental good deed on Woundwort’s part.
- Pipkin is the most wholesome character of the TV series as he see’s the good in everyone he meets and can make friends with just about anyone.
- Spoiler but the TV series ends with the Black Rabbit basically coming in and saying: “I don’t care who started it, I’m finishing it!” like a parent whose had enough of their kids bickering.
- You know you went too far when even the Black Rabbit of Inle is sick of your bullshit.
- Vervain has had countless opportunities for redemption but he consistently chooses not to take them. He’s either too much of a coward to take them or he’s not confident enough in himself to try.
- Also, Vervain is no fighter but he enjoys having power over other rabbits.
- Just about all the Watership Down rabbits have relatable moments.
- Speaker of The Past (or Speaker, she never got a name) mentioned that Hemlock (Woundwort’s father) had other sons before having Woundwort, implying that Woundwort had older brothers and was the baby of the family. Are any of his brothers still alive? Probably not but it makes me sad we didn’t get to see Woundwort get reunited with a surviving relative who later tries to reason with him…I think I have an OC idea now.
- The idea that Woundwort might have once been someone’s baby brother is as cute as it is sad. I would have loved to know more about his family.
- Hannah is a mood!
- Woundwort still laughs about that ‘hedge wizard’ incident and never lets Vervain forget it. Meanwhile, Vervain is still convinced he saw a hedge wizard. The story doesn’t help his reputation at Darkhaven as many rabbits (manly Granite) tease him for it.

#anyway love that the Owsla here apparently find joy in telling stories #it puts them into a different light because they still have somewhat animality as Holly would put it
@handfulofmuses
no but this is legitimately one of my favourite aspects of the miniseries. how they portray the owsla
you've got holly who calls out campion for looking away during the marking process, leading to the exchange between them:
holly: don't avert your eyes, captain. you're party to this campion: i'm following orders. that's what soldiers do holly: take it from me. what makes a good soldier is not always what makes a good rabbit
later, once bigwig escapes with hyzenthlay and the does, campion says that holly was a good sort, and sainfoin talks about how they should just let the does go without chasing them. it's only orchis who wants any form of revenge
sainfoin: why are we even chasing down a bunch of outsiders and does that never causes us any harm in the first place? campion: it's a good question. the one rabbit holly actually seemed like a decent sort orchis: holly was responsible for the death of my brother, campion. remember that before you run your furry mouth campion: and i'm your rank equal in this warren, captain orchis, so, remember that before you run yours sainfoin: it's not even about the outsiders. we... we all know why we're here. it's woundwort
then there's the meeting woundwort has with all the officers afterwards:
sainfoin: i feel like, by sending us to search for the outsiders, we're risking lives
he's making a completely valid point then:
woundwort: if you expire serving this warren, you should consider yourself fortunate to have the glory of such a death!
the other officers all look afraid at how woundwort approaches sainfoin (even orchis shirks as the general talks in his direction)
then there's the interaction between hazel and woundwort:
hazel: if we start a new warren in the belt of woods halfway between our two homes, we could share resources. rabbits have enough enemies without fighting between us. you'd be seen as a leader of vision. you'd be seen as a leader of genius campion: it, er, might be worth considering, sir
and let's not forget how campion orders his bucks to not kill. how he shakes his head at holly's death
the soldier line is called back later with campion refusing to go into the watership down warren. it's clear that holly's words and actions had a massive impact on him:
woundwort: campion, prepare to follow me in, but not too close, in case we're ambushed campion: i will not! woundwort: you dare disobey me? what kind of a soldier are you? campion: i'd rather be a good rabbit than a good soldier, sir
woundwort orders orchis to kill campion and orchis orders campion's bucks to join him, but campion threatens him with his superior strength. what happens next? campion leaves. and his bucks follow him. not orchis. some leave immediately while others wait until campion himself does
and you've got sainfoin, who is constantly undermining woundwort's plan of attack here, to the point that he eventually deserts as well
the owsla are eager to follow woundwort in efrafa because they're in comfy positions of power. it's when woundwort starts taking the fight to watership down that they start to completely lose faith. because it's pointless. they know it
having a mark of does leave doesn't actually effect efrafa all that negatively. it's just woundwort's personal grudge, that's what they're risking their lives for. and they realise the pointlessness of it

Watership Down/FNAF AU: The Fiver Roo
Having a Watership Down fixation rn and I can’t help but make a fnaf au about it (I apologize if some don’t look exactly like rabbits cuz realistic lagomorphs aren’t my specialty lol)
so basically these are supposed to be the missing children! For this au they’re called the “Fiver Roo” and if you don’t know about lapine language it literally translates to “little five” (fiver: five, Roo: little) Charlie is added here too bc of the space but mostly it’s still the first five. William still kills them but instead of them possessing animatronics, their spirits haunt Will after they die (when he becomes springtrap they still somewhat haunt him)
I’m not sure what their names would be in the watership down world so I’m just gonna use their actual names for now
warning! Mentions of rabbit death and violence!!
Brown rabbit kit: Gabriel - William promised him with the mention of flayrah (good food) and Gabriel believed him. However instead of food, William was leading him to a dog. He was able to escape the predator with ease but unfortunately, little Gabriel was not
Yellow Rabbit kit: Susie - The second youngest out of the five. William tricked Susie into following him by telling her where her playmates were. He kills her by breaking both of her hind legs as to render her useless and before she could scream he snaps her neck
Blueish gray rabbit kit: Jeremy - Jeremy sits by a river, a little far off from the warren. He likes collecting rocks there. William tricks him by promising where to find the best rocks. Jeremy dies by drowning as William forces his head down in the water and puts his entire weight on him
Reddish brown rabbit kit: Fritz - The oldest out of the five. Fritz is known by the extra fuzz on his head and his love for a game of bobstones (a traditional game between rabbits). William challenges him to a game and they do play for a bit. The loser will have to give up their next bit of food to the champion. Fritz ends up winning but William attacks him. He doesn’t expect Fritz to fight back and the older kit actually manages to put a nick in him. But it isn’t enough to take down the leader of the Owsla and William kills him too
Black rabbit kit: Cassidy - Cassidy began to suspect what happens to the missing kits and goes off to find them. William notices this and cannot let it happen. So he is able to make her trust him and he leads Cassidy away. Cassidy quickly figures out that he is the killer and goes on a 1 on 1 with him. As they scuffle, William sees a hidden snare trap in the undergrowth and forces Cassidy into the trap. As she suffocates, William still lands blows on her as she slowly dies out of the lack of oxygen and the wounds inflicted upon her
Ginger-ish rabbit kit: Charlie (extra) - The youngest. Daughter of the chief rabbit. Got lost in the rain and tries to find her way back to the warren. Charlie finds William, her father’s closest friend, and hops to him for help. But she was never able to get back home. William kills her out of jealousy and impulse
I definitely plan to make more characters into this life’s like the rest of the Afton family, Henry, and also Vanessa :)
#fnaf#five nights at freddy's#my art#watership down#fnaf au#the missing children#just an excuse to draw rabbits#I can’t wait to show you all about what I have in mind for springtrap#ofc I wanna do other characters as well#you’re welcome to add your own ideas too!!

I can't remember if I posted this or just typed it out once and deleted it, BUT!
There's something I long for in an animated Watership Down that I haven't seen. It's a one-off line in Hazel's thoughts before he joins El-ahrairah (novel) or Inle (film) that I'd like to see done as -
"Come, and join my Owsla"
and then El-ahrairah dashes away, crossing a river as Hazel slowly hops forward. When he gets to the opposite bank, El-ahrairah turns back
"Come along! No room for slouches in my Owsla"
"It's just, I'm feeling a bit tired sir. Heavy..."
"Well leave some of that behind. I don't think you're going to need it where we're going"
and that's when Hazel's spirit hops forward. A younger, far more lithe rabbit than the body he leaves behind, quickly crossing the river in 2 bounds to catch up with his prince.
Maybe have the prince leap further away, and Hazel looks back when he reaches the opposite bank. That would be a good time for the line about not "worrying about his Warren. He did his job and they will prosper for generations and generations"
Idunno. Just my thoughts on a changeup of the scene I'd like to see. Despite the blood the original, the film and the book live on in my heart

Next physical book to knock off of my TBR; Watership Down!!
The old 70s(?) animated film is one of my favourite films of all time. If you haven’t seen it please I beg of you go watch it, it’s so good. (I’ve only seen half of the Netflix one and I don’t remember anything of it)
Anyway, I’ve had the book for ages but never actually read it, but now I am!!
I’m looking forward to seeing all of the story play out. I’m obsessed with the rabbit words, they all have just the best mouthfeel. Owsla. Threarah. Hrairoo. Incredible.
Also stan Bigwig 🐰👑

Strawberry - The Digger 🍓 Strawberry is the best example of a good New Year‘s resolution: At Cowslip’s Warren, he was still a rather lazy rabbit & became a good digger in Watership Down and an important member for Bigwig‘s Owsla ☝🏻
I wish you a good start into the new year! That 2023 will be a successful and good year! 🍀♥️

Bluebell!! I LOVE Bluebell, he was one of my favorite characters reading the book. He's just such a funny, sillay guy, in spite of everything. I like to think his optimism and good humor is his own way of fighting back the tragedy and spitting it square in the face. Best clown.
His design shapes and colors definitely draws from bluebell flowers! I also knew I wanted to prioritize his cheerful jokester nature (over his role as an Owsla officer?? I think it's implied enough in the book that I can assume he was, even if not outright stated, but to which ???? YOU? who made you an officer?? Holly?? (maybe that makes sense actually 💀)), so I gave him big jester-hat-ish ears and rounded shapes and soft colors.

Hi, I'm writing an essay about leadership and authority in Watership Down for a final grade- do you have any thoughts on the presentation of it by Hazel, Woundwort, Cowslip and the Threarah?
Hmm..I have some ideas you could expand on! I'm rubbish at writing it all out, so I'll bullet point it!
Hazel;
Seems to be a classic, good leader type! He seems to have a talent for it, but had to learn and hone them!
Over the book he learns what to say and how to act to really bring out the best in his team. Hes not the strongest nor the smartest rabbit, but he makes up for it by utilizing his team effectivley. He knows the smartest rabbit is Blackberry, and consults him for ideas. The fastest is Dandelion etc
I think the power balance between him and Bigwig is something you could mention. Bigwig seems to lead with more force and bit more bullying then Hazel, who does use force when it needs it but is more encouraging.
Woundwort;
Woundwort leads by force. He is the boss because he is the biggest, strongest and the most feared rabbit out of the warren. I don't remember the specifics, but when he came to Efrafa he made himself Chief.
He isn't stupid, he also knows when to apply praise, which team members skills to use and when. But he doesn't use this like Hazel does.
He seems to be the opposite of Hazel. In the book Woundwort had the opportunity to cease the raid on Watership and save his rabbits but he didn't. He decided on instead of being compassionate to his rabbits and the Watership warren, he was going to follow through on his plan to destroy.
They are two sides of the same coin. "Good" and "evil"
Cowslip;
If I remember rightly, I think its dubious as to whether hes the actual leader? The nature of the warren isn't like the others. Its survival doesn't hinge on its Chief and the teachings of Elahrairah. The most unnatural thing, Man, looks after them. The Warren of the Shining Wire has no realy need for a leader.
The Threarah;
Theres not really much said about Threarah as a leader. We know that he was very selfless and daring in his younger years. Again I've forgotten the specifics but he almost gave his life so his warren could be safe. (Did he lead a man to shoot a fox?) He also seems to know his Owsla well and where and how to use them effectivley - I'd say this is very Hazel like! But in his old age he seems to of gotten complacent and lazy. He doesn't listen to Fivers warnings, even when he knew Fiver has been right in the past, berates Bigwig for letting someone bother him in his tunnel.
#ask#anon#hazel#woundwort#cowslip#the threarah#this is a bit rambly sorry#i hope you get some ideas from it!!

🗣' + Vervain
I can't find the meme for it right now and I have been working on this since days, but I am still not completely happy with it but imma post it now and edit later. Warning that this may all over the place or might not make much sense at times.
Deceitful, sneaky little bastard. Vervain is actually one of my favorite characters in the TV series. As a character, I think he is quite interesting. Especially since I said before: What Vervain lacks in strength, he will make up for with his cunning mind and I don’t think he gets the appreciation he deserves for that. Neither by Woundwort or the fandom.
Just because he is not much of a fighter doesn’t mean he is useless, far from it actually. Vervain has other strengths. His sharpest tool was always his mind. Vervain is someone who plots while others carry out what he can’t.
Had the general paid more attention towards that and actually listened to Vervain, maybe things could have been different. Unfortunately he is so obsessed with fighting so he only pays attention to the cowardly aspects of Vervain sadly.
It was his idea to trade the Redstone Warren rabbits for Silverweed. He and Woundwort wonder how to get Silverweed since kidnapping him will be quite the trouble but Vervain immediately thinks of a solution.
Turns out Campion is a traitor the second time, Spartina lies where the warren is located. Campion says that’s where it is and he points out after Campion is dragged away that he doesn’t break that easily, figuring out that Spartina was lying to them as well. Immediately finds a way to prove it too.
When Spartina, Blackberry and Campion are supposed to get punished by death? Vervain points out they will lose the only rabbits who know where Hazel’s warren is. Campion is the only one who gets dragged away, pressured to locate the warren unless Spartina and Blackberry will die as well.
Instantly catches on that there was something between Hazel and Primrose. He is observant. He knew Primrose was planning something and he was right.
I want to point out that Woundwort ordered him to keep an eye on Bigwig because Woundwort thought something was fishy and yet even there, Vervain received the shorter end of the stick for only following orders.
Now, Vervain is deceiving himself, so it makes sense that he would be able to sniff out a traitor easily.
A lot of his behavior makes sense thanks to his upbringing in Efrafa. Everything he did, it was always just for his chief rabbit. While yes. Vervain can be awful. a lot of his behavior I blame Woundwort for. Half of the time, it always circles back to him, though his own pettiness and distaste of being overshadowed play a factor too.
A leader has to be an example for his people but Woundwort was far from being a good one.
Woundwort, as we see with Pipkin and Hickory, can be manipulative. Woundwort drived his Owsla to exhaustion only to find out where the outsiders live. Woundwort has no troubles leaving someone to die if they are no longer of use to him. Insults others as incompetent when they fail as we see with both Campion and Vervain. Calls them fools. Goes “And you call yourself Owsla?!” When they fail.
Vervain took all his worst traits. He is manipulative. He drives other rabbits to exhaustion so they can find Hazel’s warren because of the fear of punishment that follows if they don’t. He leaves other rabbits behind to die if they pass out from exhaustion. Insults Moss by calling him inept for stepping into a trap. Also calls others fools.
Woundwort yells at them that they won’t rest until he gives the command. Vervain scolds another rabbit that he rests when he tells him so and not before. When Campion notes that he is exhausted, Vervain only responds that he is Owsla and better acts like it.
Him constantly insulting others is likely just to get his own frustrations out, to make himself feel better.
Vervain never did anything without reason or for the heck of it. Because all he ever did was following the rules of Efrafa or Darkhaven.
He is not snitching for the sake of being a snitch. He does not point fingers randomly. Vervain is smarter than that.
Primrose, Blackavar, Campion, Blackberry, Spartina? All he relies on is his gut feeling that they are up to something, but he can’t prove anything. So he is sneaking around, trying to gather proof before bringing it up to the general. That’s what makes the episode where everyone thinks he has gone insane even sadder - because Vervain usually doesn’t go crazy like that.
I used to like that episode because it was fun, and to some extent I still do but I feel like there would have been better solutions than making other rabbits think Vervain has gone insane. It's definitely not fun when he is telling the truth but he is made out to be insane. I don’t mind Vervain getting a taste of his own medicine, it’s just the way it was handled. It also falls back on Woundwort himself. If he has doubts, then why not stop it? You are the chief and your captain refused to listen. You just let him go on despite Vervain saying he will find out the truth even if it kills him.
Not to mention Moss knows that Vervain just doesn’t do things without reason. Vervain escapes later. comes back when he finds out where Hazel and the others have been. Moss is the one willing to hear him out - and I do like that detail. Campion might be favored over others, but Moss points out that Vervain doesn’t come back without reason, not when he knows what kind of punishments awaits him. And I do like that detail because that way it isn’t one sided.
I also want to mention that Campion was going to get arrested either way. When Campion doesn’t even show up, Woundwort just told Moss to put Campion under arrest for neglecting his duty, not even bothering for Campion to return and hear him out. I like that, actually. Because while he favors Campion, he doesn’t get the luxury of special treatment.
You know what makes me sad? That he is entirely dependent on General Woundwort and thinks his life belongs to him.
The wanderer went really hard with Vervain. He was attacked by predators left and right, desperately apologizes to Aspen for ditching him and then ends up in a wire and almost drowning.
Primrose is entirely valid in not wanting to help. She has suffered the most under Vervain, he dragged her away from her warren. She absolutely does not owe him anything anymore.
What surprised me, however, was that he realized what kind of rabbit he was and refuses to beg for his life further after Holly and Primrose do not want help him. I expected him to beg but I think he realized that he does not deserve it.
And he is genuinely grateful when they decide to help. I’m still convinced the small and weak thank you was meant for Primrose. He was going to take that second chance. He was free.
Unfortunately?
“Master. I live to serve you.”
That always made me sad because it didn’t had to be that way. But after getting attacked left and right, everyone else hating his guts for understandable reasons, Woundwort is all he has left. Joining up with him again was nothing more than a survival tactic. And after ditching him, it was best to avoid his wrath even further.
Vervain is my favorite in season three. It was nice to see how he acted without Woundwort and most importantly - I do like that sassy attitude he shows, even towards his chief rabbit, something he wouldn’t have dared in Efrafa. When he has enough? He has enough and you will know.
Vervain deserved better. In his own way, Vervain was loyal to him, even when it was only out of fear. He always had the shorter end of the stick, even when he was trying to cheer up Woundwort with his general being all knowing and what not. No matter how hard he worked. Vervain suffered under his reign just as much as everyone else.
Woundwort dismisses him so quickly in season three when he notes how Campion is still a traitor and that Blackberry could be too. Says he is wary of his suspicions. At this point, his hate for Campion has nothing to do with jealousy anymore or being overshadowed by him. Imagine the guy who was spying before attempts the same thing twice and your general believes him a second time, no other questions asked. That would drive anyone crazy.
Flatout tells Vervain that Silverweed is more valuable to him.
With everything that happened between them in season three, and the whole thing where he thought Vervain has gone insane, I wish there had been something where Vervain finally ended up betraying him. He deserved it. Not because he ended up liking the outsiders, not because of the goodness of his heart - but because he hated everyone else and was just so done with it. Unfortunately, he is too much of a coward to go against Woundwort.
He deserved better. He was a scumbag who’s rank often got to his head but in season three it really didn’t had to be that way. He was offered a second chance but his chief rabbit made a return.

"Not of all rabbits, of course," Fiver responded in an amused tone. "Just of our warren."
He hopped on along after Brutus, his nose rising into the air trying to pick up any familiar scent of Flay-Rah, he was usually rather good at hunting the stuff down, when he was a younger buck he'd find them for Hazel and eat them together when the Owsla weren't looking.
"I'm not worried about that," Fiver said. "Even if you did, Bigwig would be the one to stand in your way and he's... Lets just say he's passionate about protecting our home."
" Oh? Your brother's the chief of the rabbits? " that was information that could be useful to Brutus later. For now, the large rat decided to be helpful. it was surprising that this rabbit did not attack him, most rabbits considered all to be their enemy. " Well, I'll try to find some of that other stuff you were looking for earlier," he said with a shrug. Or ask Mr. Ages about it. if any-mouse knew about herbs and greens it was that old man.
" Don't worry though, I won't follow you to your burrow. "
