UTILISING THE SPACE
Tumblr media
The Stationers Shop
This is the first room you enter after reception; originally this room was used by William Low who used is as a stationers and tobacconist’s shop in 1838. In 1872 William’s son, John closed the shop and ordered that it could not be reopened until after his death. The Coles family entered in 1904 to find much of the original stock, including an outstanding collection of Valentines cards.
The story behind this room shows significant influence to the exhibition I have been asked to design. It already displays some of the cards found and would be a good starting point for my design, enabling me to begin the story of the cards and the origins and history behind them.

The Georgian Parlour
This room has been set in 1775 during the widowhood of Elizabeth King, whose family occupied the house in the 18thC. Features of this room include a 17thC plaster ceiling and decorative frieze with an inscription over the window. There is wall panelling which was installed in 1700 when the size of the room was reduced and the fire place to the right of the room was concealed.
This room is a similar size to the Stationers Shop and is connected through an archway, so the use of ‘open plan’, in effect will allow me to create zones within the exhibition to separate different information and cards while being able to achieve a continuous flow.

The 17thC Hall
This room would have been the principle room of the house. The wall opposite the carved fireplace is made form timber and contains fragments of the orginal screen at either end, which separated the hall from the cross-passage beyond. The painted linen cloths hung from the walls are modern copies of a set at Owlpen manor in Gloucestershire and depict the biblical story of Joseph.
This room is the largest off them so would be most suitable to provide any interactive areas and activities. Providing interactive areas as part of my exhibition will enhance learning and engage the visitors into the exhibition and history.
(Information in this blog post was retained from the museums leaflet which I have in my sketchbook)
