Today is National Read A Book Day, and I can't think of a better one to pore over with your toddler or preschooler than Delphine Badreddine's "Tell Me About Colours, Shapes, and Opposites" (2012). It's a beautiful, retro-feel little book with visual appeal for both kids and adults, and covers a multitude of early childhood concepts! 📚📙📗 Aurélie Guillerey's gorgeous illustrations make striking use of primary colours against a black-and-white background, and useful vocabulary phrases and simply-phrased ideas demonstrating the noted "colours, shapes, and opposites" are scattered throughout playful vignettes of a busy family. Sloth at the Zoom humorously stresses the importance of s-l-o-w-i-n-g down in this super-charged world that we live in! Zoom is a zoo filled with, well, zoom-y animals. When Sloth arrives, she doesn’t quite fit in with the high-flying monkeys, speedy cheetahs, or rushing zebras (who gallop so quickly that their stripes get left behind in puddles!). But that doesn’t stop her from being her own sloth-y self. Luckily, she finds a slow-moving friend who knows about the joy of being in the present moment. The other animals are intrigued by the two friends’ relaxed demeanors and join in, where they all become fast friends. Sloth at the Zoom is a fantastic read aloud for 2nd-3rd graders.
