Kind of wonder what overseer Tremel means by saying that Vemrin is of "mixed blood" 🤔
Probably that he's got ancestry from some of the aliens (non-humans and non-sith purebloods) they enslaved or something, right? Curious stuff.

throwing the names of the following NPCs at you for you to describe your OCs' relationships to them: master tol braga, master orgus din, overseer tremel
I’m going to answer this in three parts because it got ridiculously long. Here’s Brakerre’s.
Brakerre and Tol Braga:
Brakerre first meets Tol Braga, like all of the people who usually come in during Act 2, during the Act 1 crisis. This does absolute wonders for her not considering him an absolute twit who doesn’t think anything through or listen to anybody. He’s a very kind person who tries to see the good in everybody, and he shows up with (as it’s explained to Brakerre) one of the very few redeemed Sith in the galaxy. Brakerre is kind of simultaneously a starry-eyed padawan (she’s only seventeen! she hasn’t been a Jedi for more than a year or two!) and also more jaded than most Jedi her age in some ways (she has an Expensive Medical Condition that the Order can treat easily, but that her mother couldn’t afford best practices for), and somehow this works out that… Tol Braga isn’t as grounded as Orgus, and isn’t as materially entangled as the Green Jedi she grew up hearing about, and I think that works out to her largely believing Tol Braga’s self-perception.
Which is almost accurate! He’s kind and forgiving and above worldly flaws, and—she doesn’t see that it’s a kind of arrogance to believe that the Light never fails and your senses won’t ever lead you wrong, because doesn’t he just really, really trust in the Force?
Then Act 2 starts, at which point everyone who knows anything about the Emperor is going “no, you can’t, this is a horrible idea.” Unfortunately, this is largely just Kira (with Brakerre backing her up, having seen and felt the entity that briefly possessed Kira on Angral’s ship) and Sajar. And Sajar is far too able to be convinced that he’s acting out of fear, because it’s partly true; he does fear the Emperor. And Tol Braga has had a vision, has felt a calling, is convinced that the “Emperor” who possessed Kira and who Sajar has once or twice seen is… a ghost possessing a figurehead, or an entity created by the mysterious Hand that “serves” him, and that he needs to be rescued.
I haven’t decided how Brakerre reacts to that. She certainly still has reservations. But she has to wonder if Braga is right—if there’s someone trapped at the center of this, as much a victim as Kira is. And if there isn’t, is that worth deciding they wouldn’t have been worth rescuing? It just means the mission might turn out to be an assassination.
But things… crop up, as she assists in the mission preparations. Braga should have been the one to go to Quesh—not because he was wrong to leave someone alone who’s been a Jedi for ten years now, not because Sajar needs his master there the same way a young padawan might, but because that official responsibility still exists. If you have so much faith in him that “the base is surrounded by Imperials, but he refuses to fight and won’t answer his holo” doesn’t seem like a personal concern, or even an “I’ll be there when I can, but you’re closer, do what you can in the meantime” concern, then he shouldn’t be a padawan anymore. If he doesn’t need you there, then he doesn’t need a master.
(This is one of the places where I’m not inclined to chalk it up to the writer not understanding the implications they were making—the fact that Braga tells you flat-out, “Sajar has fully embraced the Jedi way. Whatever has happened, it isn't his fault,” seems to make it entirely in keeping with what’s later revealed as his fatal flaw. He’s unwilling to consider that Sajar might not have been as prepared as he thought—even if it had only been that Sajar didn’t think he could fight and kill Imperials, there’s still clearly a problem there! If it isn’t Sajar’s, whose is it?)
Brakerre doesn’t think in quite those same terms of responsibility, but it doesn’t go over her head that Braga is kind of… considering his current responsibilities and accomplishments settled enough that he doesn’t have to pay attention to them while he chases new ones.
Then the mission ends badly, of course. Then Brakerre is left as a hunted fugitive, and it’s Braga’s fault in large part, and Braga’s padawan is committing the mother of all parole violations to go with her and help her save the galaxy and the other members of the strike team both. She doesn’t hate Braga for it. She doesn’t have the time or energy to spare to care about him at all, except in a dull distant way when she sees how much Sajar blames himself for all of it.
She’s willing to accept Braga’s insistence that he cannot be saved, at the end.
Sajar isn’t.
And if she can’t make herself reach out a hand, she’s not the one who has to. Not there, not then.
Brakerre and Orgus Din:
How do I explain this in less than a thousand words?
Imagine that you are Orgus Din. Imagine that you lost your previous padawan during the Sacking of Coruscant, and you haven’t taken another since. Imagine that you’re visiting Corellia for all the reasons that the Master of the Order might need to talk to the Order’s often-slightly-estranged cousins, who took you in after the Sacking but approach Jedi philosophy in a way that makes you want to tear out all your hair.
Someone lets you know, during the visit, that there’s an initiate who wants to join the mainline Order instead. They could wait for someone else to come evaluate her for admission, but you’re right there; it’s more efficient if you talk to her. And you’ve counseled a lot of young Jedi who are trying to figure out the path they want to walk—even a few who decided they didn’t want to remain with the Order at all, in the end.
Imagine that you come to talk to the initiate, and she’s sick because of something treatable and she’s as kind as any Jedi ought to be and she’s so tired, already, even though she’s only fifteen, because she knows why her life has been like this and if she has to stay with the Green Jedi she’s going to start hating them.
Imagine that you look at her, and you know the Force chose her.
You don’t know if she’s meant to be your padawan. But you can see all the ways she could go wrong, already, and you know that no one else would understand quite as well.
(This is a version of another story. It isn’t a happy story, no matter who it happens to, but it’s a kinder one than it could have been.)
Orgus takes her as his padawan then and there, and she learns to be the best Jedi she can be, and then the galaxy starts going to hell. She’s seventeen when Coruscant is nearly encased in the Planet Prison. She’s eighteen when she’s knighted, on the battlefield, and eighteen when her master almost dies.
His ghost, of course, can’t save her from Vitiate. He’s halfway across the galaxy, alive and well. She has to save herself.
He can’t help very much when the Republic declares her a traitor. The galaxy doesn’t have enough time for her to undergo a trial. There’s no guarantee they’d come to the correct conclusion.
Brakerre knows that Orgus saved her in every way he could. But in the end, she still has to face the end of all things alone.

One of the things I find weird about swtor are the people who try to argue Harkun's isn't a worse Overseer then Tremel because they both show bias to one acolyte. This ignores the fact that Tremel's bias for the Sith Warrior is him speedrunning the SW through their trials while Harkun tries to assassinate the Inquisitor, gives Ffon the job of looking through a library for one of his trials and tries to trick Zash into thinking the Inquisitor failed the trial and Ffon succeeded which would've gotten the Inquisitor killed. Like did these people just not pay attention to the story?

Tasha: Let me top you instead, hun.
I've made my first male character in SWTOR just to romance Theron Shan, and look at me now, simping for Vemrin - my enemy in the Sith Academy. That is something I DIDN'T expect to be doing, lol.
Vemrin: So you're Overseer Tremel's secret weapon, huh? Impressive, to be sure. Afraid the old man waited too long to make his move, though.
Vemrin: I'm Vemrin, and unlike you I've fought and bled for everything I have. I demand respect.
Tasha: Are you saying I haven't earned my way?
Vemrin: Please. Everyone knows what Tremel is doing. If Overseer Tremel had made his move a year ago, when I first arrived, you might've had a chance. But now-too little, too late.
Dolgis: This is ridiculous, Vemrin. Let's just kill him and hide the body.
Vemrin: We're not on Balmorra anymore, Dolgis. There are rules. Traditions. We'll leave the shortcuts to Overseer Tremel and his last pathetic hope here.
Tasha: You're not very good with people, are you?
Vemrin: You're not funny. Just pathetic. And you've been warned.
Klemral: Look here, Vemrin. I see the upstart but no sign of Dolgis.
Vemrin: I underestimated you by sending Dolgis. It will not happen again. [if only game allowed SW say something here, Tasha'd be like:]
Tasha: What if I just slammed you in the wall and kissed you? What would be your reaction? That could be something interesting to see.
Me the player: *imagining Tasha slamming Vemrin into a wall and kissing him in front of his fellow acolytes, then dodging his punch while athletically jumping backwards and smirking at his dumb-founded face like a truly gay disaster Sith that he is*
Tasha: I have little to no interest in anything Vemrin says or does, master. Baras: The tension is thick between you two. A great source of emotion to feed on. I wonder what will happen when it boils over.
Me the player: SEX, OF COURSE!
Baras selling ships like candies, lol.
Tasha was in the library of the Korriban's Sith Academy when Vemrin approached him. With witnesses around, he wouldn't do anything rash, so Tasha didn't pay much mind to him, continuing to shift through the volumes to read to advance his studies.
"Why aren't you responding to my challenges? What game are you playing? Are you trying to provoke me, so I would make the first move and fall into some kind of trap?”
Tasha sighed tiredly, and responded without even looking at him.
“You have worked hard to be where you are. I respect that. There is no point in me trying to overthrow your chance to become a Sith if it doesn't pose any threat to my advancement”.
"Don't be naive. We all are threats to other Acolytes. Not everybody can graduate from the Sith Academy. Most of the Acolytes die either killed in the Tombs, by their Masters or other Acolytes" he stated matter-of-factly, before he added:
"Overseer Tremel didn't bring you here, so you would dilly-dally. He wanted you to destroy me. Don't tell me that you are afraid to do what he wanted you to do?" Clearly trying to taunt Tasha.
Tasha looked at him now, one eyebrow raised as if to pointedly insinuate that what Vemrin said was daft.
"Did it ever occur to you that I may have changed my mind and decided to not listen to the Overseer that brought me here?" he asked casually. "I killed him not because Baras told me to. I did it, because his beliefs sicken me".
He changed his stance to a more open one, before continuing, as if trying to convey that what he was saying is sincere.
"I don't believe that Siths should stay pure to the Sith bloodlines, even though I myself am considered pure despite looking nothing like the Red Siths” he stated as if it was obvious. “I also don't believe that the half-bloods like you have no place in the Sith Empire. To the contrary, I think having people like you around, is beneficial regardless of your blood purity status".
That seemed to give Vemrin a pause. Still, it was visible that he didn't believe Tasha entirely. Looking for the deception.
"Suit yourself then. Don't expect me to spare you if you stand in my way to be Sith though" he said with a sneer.
"Great, that's everything I want".
But then Baras was like.
Baras: But only one of you will have the opportunity to claim a special lightsaber and serve as my apprentice. I thought it would be you, Vemrin, but I've changed my mind.
Vemrin: What? I've done everything you've asked. Better than any of the others! The honor should be mine!
Tasha: I'm sorry, Vemrin. I know how much you were gunning for this.
Baras: Today, Vemrin is every bit your rqual but the Force is stronger with you, acolyte, and there is a power sleeping within you. It was a simple decision.
My baby, sincere to the end. He really wanted Vemrin to succeed.
Vette: Hey, this is it. The secret entrance to the hidden cavern is in here. Just let me get my bearings.
Tasha: Oh good, we were getting lonely, and now look who's decided to join the party--my old friend Vemrin.
Vemrin: My legacy has suffered long enough. After today, you will be forgotten. It ends here and now.
Ah, dang it, Vemrin. And we could have such cute babies together!
Vemrin: Becoming Baras' apprentice was my destiny. Did I come this far and overcome such adversity, only to be proven unworthy?
Tasha: Don't be so hard on yourself, Vemrin. You have been a worthy opponent.
Vemrin: Shut up! There is only victory or death.
Vemrin: I refuse to live a... lesser life. Finish me. I will not accept mercy.
This romance ended so tragically. Ow.
(I didn't pick any DS "kill him" options despite being given two of them, so I don't know if Tasha has slain him or not in the end).

deadly bias in the sith trials
While the Sith Trials have undoubtedly earned their bloody reputation, I don’t think that they are usually quite so bloody as those of the Warrior and Inquisitor. Having a sole survivor out of each batch of seven acolytes – a fatality rate of something in the range of 86% – would quickly leave the Sith outnumbered by the Jedi, which is a bit too stupid evil to be plausible. Overseers Harkun and Tremel are both trying to eliminate the slave-acolytes out of their pools of candidates, which not only results in the former slaves’ deaths but those of the free-born acolytes they aren’t actively trying to get rid of.
Tremel refuses to compromise the integrity of his Trials for both ideological and practical reasons. Interfering to allow the weak to triumph over the strong undermines the justification for having a murderous death gauntlet to weed the weak out in the first place. Watering down his Trials could damage Tremel’s reputation and Baras will obviously never accept an apprentice who was ushered through the Trials on training wheels. So, Tremel continues to ramp up the difficultly of the Trials that he assigns hoping to kill Vemrin, which doesn’t work. More free-born acolytes die until it becomes clear that soon Vemrin will be the only one left, which is when Tremel brings the Warrior in.
Unlike Tremel, Harkun is prepared to sacrifice the integrity of the Trials to push his preferred candidate through – it’s probably one of the reasons why his reputation is poor. Especially since the delivery of his favouritism is incompetent. Adding Ffon Althe to a Trial for a Lord who had stated she was specifically looking for a former slave, depriving him of challenges that would push him beyond his current limits, building an antagonism between Ffon and all the other acolytes who might have decided since they weren’t going to be permitted to survive to graduate they might as well have the satisfaction of murdering the teacher’s pet – it’s no surprise the guy wound up dead.
Having had the Inquisitor succeed too obviously in Lord Zash’s eyes to deny they have become Sith, Harkun would have preferred Zash also take Ffon as her apprentice. In The Final Trial, Lana Beniko makes it out of Tulak Hord’s tomb alongside the former slave Bensyn; given that this Trial was explicitly the last one, Lana’s master presumably took both her and Bensyn as apprentices, so even Harkun must have been forced to allow this in the past. Unfortunately for Ffon, he has failed to prove his worth before Zash, Harkun has annoyed Zash by attempting to foil her efforts to acquire her preferred apprentice, and Zash would probably prefer to keep the number of people who knew the Inquisitor before her planned body-snatch to a minimum.
Vemrin refuses to accept surviving defeat by the Warrior as a possibility, but I don’t believe it’s because there is any official directive against it – after all, the Warrior can convince Baras to give Klemral an out from the Trials by assigning him as Jailer Knash’s underling – rather that Vemrin has internalised the disparate treatment of the ex-slave and alien acolytes compared to their conventional counterparts. Overseers like Tremel and Harkun work to weed out the slave acolytes, dragging the Trials on for as long as it takes to achieve that, so that former slaves can only graduate if all their competition is eliminated. Prospective masters like Baras and Zash allow this. Hence the reason for Vemrin’s violence towards the other acolytes; if he is to live, then they must die. It doesn’t matter if the Warrior believes otherwise because it’s not up to the Warrior, it’s up to Baras, and Baras is complicit in this system.
In “fair” and “normal” Trials, I would expect that there would usually be two to four graduating Sith out of a batch of seven to nine acolytes. Higher ranking Sith presumably get first pick of the successful candidates. Higher ranked Sith also get first pick of which group being overseen by a particular Overseer they will choose survivors from. Taking multiple apprentices together from the same batch is common behaviour among Sith who view it as like hiring new research assistants, gophers, etc after their old group has all died or been promoted out of their direct service.
(No, this isn’t what we see when the Inquisitor recruits Xalek, but that sequence does make it obvious the player is chained to the plot rails. Many Inquisitors would like to reroute the cycle of suffering by immediately electrocuting Harkun and confiscating all the acolytes or take both Xalek and Seferiss as apprentices since the guy who actually managed to complete the Trials like you did should be at least as attractive as the guy waiting to jump him when he gets back but nooo.)
I think there is also an established out that Overseers can take advantage of to shuffle acolytes who have already passed some Trials but won’t make it through all of them away to work somewhere. Klemral can be assigned to Knash in the prison; Alif can be sent to apprentice under a Sith on Dromund Kaas as witness protection. This would be a useful tool for Overseers who are assigned an acolyte who they don’t want to have die on their watch – because, for example, the acolyte has a relative on the Dark Council – but whom they are also unable to push into success. While some families would absolutely tell their offspring to return a Sith or not return at all, others probably send theirs along with a note for the Overseer reading “When my useless son fails send him back to me so he can assist with my botany projects since that is all he will ever be good for.” An embarrassing failure for the acolyte, and one that many would rather die in the Trials than face, but a relief for others.
