Crane Operators Near Me

Crane Operators Near Me: Why You Need Them and Their Benefits
In the world of construction and heavy lifting, the role of crane operators is paramount. Whether you are managing a large-scale construction project, moving heavy equipment, or simply need to lift something substantial, having a skilled crane operator on hand can make all the difference. This blog will delve into why you need crane operators near you and how their expertise is invaluable for various projects.
Understanding the Role of Crane Operators
Crane operators are specialized professionals trained to operate cranes and other heavy lifting equipment. Their expertise ensures that materials and equipment are moved safely and efficiently on construction sites, warehouses, and industrial settings. They play a critical role in various sectors, including construction, shipping, and manufacturing.
The importance of crane operators cannot be overstated. They are responsible for the safe operation of cranes, which are powerful machines capable of lifting tons of weight. The complexity of their job requires not only technical skills but also a deep understanding of safety protocols, load limits, and site layouts.
Safety First
One of the most compelling reasons to hire crane operators near you is safety. Crane operations involve numerous hazards, from the risk of equipment failure to potential accidents caused by miscommunication among crew members. Professional crane operators are trained to navigate these risks effectively. They understand how to assess the weight and balance of loads and are adept at using signals to communicate with ground crews.
By hiring local crane operators, you can rest assured that they are familiar with the specific regulations and safety standards applicable in your area. This local knowledge can help prevent accidents, ensuring that your project runs smoothly and without unnecessary delays.
Expertise and Experience
Another significant advantage of hiring crane operators is their expertise and experience. Crane operation is not just about knowing how to operate a machine; it requires a comprehensive understanding of various factors that can affect lifting operations.
Experienced crane operators possess a wealth of knowledge gained through years of training and practical experience. They can identify potential challenges on the job site, such as unstable ground or overhead obstacles, and adjust their strategies accordingly. Their ability to foresee issues before they arise can save time and resources, ultimately leading to a more efficient project timeline.
Versatility of Services
Crane operators are not limited to just one type of lifting or site. They can operate various types of cranes, including tower cranes, mobile cranes, and rough terrain cranes. This versatility means that no matter the project type, crane operators can provide the necessary support.
For instance, in construction, crane operators are essential for hoisting steel beams and other heavy materials into place. In industrial settings, they may be tasked with moving machinery or large components. Their ability to adapt to different environments and project needs makes them an invaluable resource for any operation that involves heavy lifting.
Cost-Effectiveness
While some may view hiring crane operators as an added expense, it can actually be a cost-effective choice. Attempting to operate a crane without a qualified professional can lead to costly mistakes. Accidents caused by untrained personnel can result in significant property damage, project delays, and potential legal liabilities.
Additionally, skilled crane operators can help optimize the lifting process, ensuring that tasks are completed more quickly and efficiently. Their expertise can minimize downtime, leading to cost savings in the long run. When you consider the potential risks and costs associated with untrained operators, hiring qualified crane operators near you becomes a smart investment.
Compliance with Regulations
Crane operations are subject to strict regulations and safety standards to ensure the safety of workers and the general public. These regulations vary by location and project type, making it crucial to have operators who are well-versed in the specific laws governing your area.
Local crane operators will be familiar with these regulations and can ensure that your project remains compliant. This not only protects your business from potential fines or legal issues but also fosters a culture of safety on the job site.
Enhanced Efficiency
When you hire crane operators near you, you benefit from their knowledge of the local area and site conditions. This familiarity can lead to enhanced efficiency in lifting operations. Local operators understand the best practices for maneuvering cranes in different environments and can quickly adapt to changing site conditions.
Their ability to communicate effectively with other team members on-site ensures that operations run smoothly. This synergy between crane operators and ground crews is essential for maintaining an efficient workflow and preventing delays.
Building Relationships
Having crane operators nearby allows for the development of strong working relationships. When you work with local operators repeatedly, they become familiar with your projects and preferences. This rapport can lead to increased trust and collaboration, resulting in better outcomes for your construction efforts.
Additionally, local crane operators are more likely to prioritize your projects because they are invested in the community. Their commitment to your success can foster a collaborative environment where everyone is working toward the same goal.
Conclusion
In conclusion, hiring crane operators near you is not just a smart choice; it’s a necessity for any project that involves heavy lifting. Their expertise, commitment to safety, and knowledge of local regulations provide invaluable support for construction and industrial operations. By investing in skilled crane operators, you can enhance the safety and efficiency of your project, ultimately leading to better results.
Whether you are embarking on a major construction project or need assistance with a smaller job, consider the benefits of local crane operators. Their presence not only improves your operational efficiency but also contributes to a safer work environment. Don't underestimate the power of having trained professionals at your disposal; they are an essential part of any successful lifting operation.

What will be subjected to the "Cycles"?
As aforementioned held the ambition of wanting to photograph both portraits and landscapes where I then decided to photograph portraits of my friends in the environments that they either frequently accessed (and thus became their routine- their cycle) or places that held significant meaning to them.
As the project proposal was in week 3 of our semester and the project was to be presented in week 6 this left me with 3 weeks to organise meet-ups with people who would be interested in being a part of my project and would be available, travel to their proposed locations and have a casual photoshoot, organise my files, edit them and then print them. Very conveniently the available people are friends I have made throughout my life can be (almost) evenly categorised in their own collections. Below are the collection categories with the first initials of a handful of people in my life, the locations they proposed to me, and a brief reason why they chose them. Everyone in this project has chosen uni as one of their chosen locations, which is convenient! (NOTE: Not all mentioned locations will be included in the final project)
Old Friends
These would be friends that I made during my primary and high school years.
S:
Western Sydney University Parramatta Campus: Self-explanatory since we have to go to uni. She is studying design and somehow game design is a big part of it this year for her! I'm also jealous of her since she has 1/4 the on-site days than I do...
Pop-Mart Parramatta: Location specification as this shop is in very close proximity to WSU. We both have a gambler's mentality when it comes to blind boxes and crane games.
Daiso Parramatta: Location specification as this shop is in very close proximity to WSU. A Japanese department store. Both of us also frequent to Daiso's in general for cheap stationary and mainly to browse their sticker selections that we will probably never use on anything.
Kinokuniya: A Japanese book store with only one location in Sydney AFAIK. She frequently goes in to browse or sometimes purchase new volumes of Asian media such as manga and art books.
A:
University of Technology Hive Superlab: Self-explanatory since we have to go to uni. She's doing a very cool scientific degree (I forgot what though...I think something related to environmental biology. What a friend I am !) and so she regularly accesses the UTS lab space that is located on basement level.
Mama Tang in Cabramatta: Mama Tang is a self-serve malatang restaurant that she regularly goes to for lunch. In fact she went the week before I asked her if she wanted to be a part of my project! This also provided me with the opportunity to try malatang for the first time.
Home: It is home. This place also holds a special memory for me as I had made macarons for the first time for our boyfriends ahead of Valentine's day. I came up with my own adjustments for hazelnut macarons as that is the one nut my boyfriend isn't allergic to and it was a hit amongst her family and my boyfriend!
Best Friend
Not that I don't have other best friends. But this person holds a very special place in my heart, despite the long distance (Sydney < - > Melbourne) as he is my boyfriend. I will also be including myself in this collection.
S:
Shrine of Remembrance: The first time I experienced an ANZAC Dawn Service as a 5 year old was here, although I didn't understand the weight of the service and the place at the time. The beginning steps into the world of aviation, and particularly military aviation, were found at this specific service when an F-111 captured my inspiration flying overhead. I continued to return as I grew, each time returning with a greater understanding of the sacrifices of service people in defence of Australia and other nations, despite which a visit here nearly pushed me into the ADF itself. Jells Park: The park near both of my homes where my parents often took me and my siblings, as well as where we'd meet up with friends. Southern Cross: unlike others who see Flinders Street as the "central" station to their lives, Southern Cross is the more important intersection for me. Whether it be travelling into the CBD, going across the city to buy flowers or going to the airport, I usually interchange at Southern Cross. Yarra River and MEC: The Yarra holds a lot of importance as a place through which I hold a lot of strong, fond memories, in particular with my partner. We've spent many events along the south bank of the Yarra, spanning across from the arts precinct through to the convention centre. It is the epitome of (in my case) "you will not know you're making memories until they've passed"
C:
Morie (Marrickville): This is a relatively new place that my boyfriend and I started going to for wax-related craft workshops of which we have done 2/3 workshops available together. It's incredibly funny and the owner and I joke about how we either show up on the wrong date or S has booked for the wrong date and thus wouldn't be in Sydney to do it as he is the one that books it for us to do.
Cabramatta station: This station holds a special place in my heart as it's the vessel for any sense of travel and adventure for me. Whether I need or want to go to the city or any other suburb along the T2, T3 or T5 for things like hanging out with friends or doing a bit of shopping, the trains are one thing that more often than not is a part of my journey. I've probably spent more money topping up my Opal card than on clothes.
New Friends
These would be friends that I made during uni. Both of these friends are people that I met near the beginning of the first semester in my first year (which was actually last year!).
T:
Sydney College of the Arts 2nd Year Studio: Self-explanatory since we have to go to uni. These shared studio spaces are granted for students to work on their projects on-site but also to store any other projects and materials. T's studio room is mainly used to students studying more 'flat' works such as screen arts, painting, screen printing, etc. They often hang around in their studio area to hang out with friends for chats and lunch and I got to see their space for the first time since I don't have my own studio space (no need for photomedia IMO) and got to see their doodles. The ramblings of an artist are ones that only another artist or agent of chaos can understand.
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital: This hospital holds a highly personal significance to T despite them only having had to visit the hospital once. Although we are friends, I didn't feel like we were that close enough for me to pry into it. I'm not entitled to that sort of information. As it is a hospital though I'm 99.99% sure that photography wouldn't be allowed so it'll probably be off the list.
Headspace Camperdown: Headspace is a mental health service that I'm sure many people know about. I had no idea they had physical offices before T told me he wanted to have a shoot here for the project. T is a regular here most likely as a patient but they've also let me know they volunteer here as well! It was nice seeing how many people recognised them. They recently launched 'Genderbility', a zine about the real-life experience of gender-diverse and autistic individuals, and hosted it there at Headspace. Amazing stuff I think.
Sydney College of the Arts Staff Bathrooms: This one is weird in concept but I'm guilty of also having used the staff bathrooms numerous times. The ones they usually use is on the same side as their studio space (Female Courtyard side). I find it funny how I was the one to let them know there was shower in there and the fact that this bathroom technically has multiple levels. Who uses them?
E:
Sydney College of the Arts 2nd Year Studio: These shared studio spaces are granted for students to work on their projects on-site but also to store any other projects and materials. E usually uses her space for storage since a lot of the work she has to do is down on the basement level anyway as that's where the glass studio is. She has a handful of smaller pieces that she keeps there, most likely to let other people know that there is in fact a person that uses that little area.
Sydney College of the Arts Slip-Cast Studio and Warm Studio: Both of these rooms are mainly used during class time and to work on projects. She's limited in how often and what work can be done in the hot room for the glass studio so to keep on track with any work these rooms are the ones that she can use for a bit longer and easier.
Sydney College of the Arts Level 3 Hallway (Parallel to sides of the stage hall): This little hallway is just a quiet area for one to either take a shortcut across the Old Teacher's College or to take a break on the floor for lunch or any time outside of class time. Her and I usually meet here just to have a quick chat before we head off to our dedicated classes. We both go to the side closest to our rooms (Female Courtyard Side) as the Photomedia room and stairs to the basement are on the same side.

“The next step she took was not put down where she intended it to be at all. In fact, an abrupt tugging and changing of the terrain made her stumble first forward, then backward as she tried to regain her balance, and fell...”
[part 1 here] [part 3 here]
...Into the overstuffed cushions of an expensive-looking, plushy armchair. Suddenly, instead of polluted late-day sunlight, there was the yellowy glinting of electric lights overhead. She looked up and saw vaulted ceilings and chandeliers gently swaying.
"What.... th-?!" Yuu gripped the arms of the overstuffed chair and made a motion to scramble to her feet, but then caught the shuffling motions of busy crowds in her peripheral vision. The people on all sides were all wrapped up in their own affairs, but she felt that once she attracted their attention, all those pairs of eyes would fix upon her... No. Not even this crazy occurrence was worth that. The chances of getting an answer to the questions still forming one after another in her mind, weighed against the certainty of hostile stares, and maybe even questions asked of her that she herself couldn't even begin to answer? It was out of the question. She tucked her feet nervously under the chair and tightened her grip on its arms, letting her gaze roam around this -- it looked like a hotel lobby? -- trying to find something, anything, she could use to ground herself, or take stock of her situation. Craning her neck awkwardly to look around the back of her chair at the revolving doors near the entrance, a line of polished luggage carts, and she saw tall glass windows, with writing painted backward on them to be read by pedestrians outside. Hotel Mer Lion.
"That tells me... nothing." Yuu grumbled and fumbled in her skirt pocket; by touch, she found her wallet, but not her phone. Instinctively she scanned the tile floors and plush carpet around her chair. There it was, lying just barely in reach. Hesitant to leave her chair fortress, she leaned forward out of it and stretched out and grabbed the phone with her fingertips. Turning it over, she saw what she had pessimistically expected to see: a big, ugly crack running down the screen. Figures. She sighed again at the sheer number of things going wrong in succession and went to try to search the internet for the name of the hotel. "No service...? In the middle of an urban area?? And the wifi networks available look... weird...”
As she hunched over her device, swiping through menus, trying to find something that would work... A hand came down heavily on her shoulder. "You don't have to do that."

Hey! I absolutely love your writing and saw you wanted a prompt or two. I found this one and it would be adorable with Alex and Henry so here: “You sat next to me on the airplane and fell asleep on my shoulder and I don’t want to move you cause you look so comfortable. Oh and you’re hot.” (if you want to write it of course but you totally don't have to I just thought it would be cute) 💕💕💕
Hello! Thank you so much! It’s been like a week but I just turned in my last midterm for the week and I finally have time to post what I wrote!
(also, I wrote this twice because I had two ideas. The second version will be another post soon)
“Variations on a Plane: Meet Cute”
Alex hoists his carry on into the overhead bin, then does an awkward shuffle down the row and into his window seat, stuffing a backpack below the seat in front of him and shoving it back as far as it will go to make room for his feet. He’s already started to browse the in-flight movie options when someone sits down next to him. From the corner of his eye, Alex sees jeans rolled up at the bottom kicking a bag with a pronoun pin further under the seat. From what he can tell, his gaydar has been working decently in the UK, and those are both good signs.
“Anything good on?” the other boy asks, and Alex realizes he doesn’t have his headphones in. Not that it matters; he would have wanted to talk anyway. He notices suddenly that the other boy smells good. He’d been worried about his seat mate smelling bad, but he’d completely forgotten to consider the possibility of the opposite, which may be even more unsettling.
“Depends what you like. There’s a few superhero movies, some cartoons… it looks like a decent selection.”
The stranger nods, turning to his screen. Alex goes back to browsing until, a few minutes later, the in-flight safety demonstration pauses their screens. Alex sighs and rolls his eyes, but the stranger leans over to ask, “Have you seen this?”
“What, the safety demonstration? I flew over here, didn’t I?”
“No, this movie. I’m trying to decide if it looks good.”
Alex cranes his neck to look at the other man’s screen, ignoring the notice telling them to watch the flight attendant buckle and unbuckle a seatbelt. “Yeah, it was good. Not like… jaw dropping, best movie I’ve ever seen good, but I liked it.”
“Thanks.”
The safety demonstration ends, and their screens unpause as they begin to taxi. Alex browses until takeoff, when he turns to the window. He leans back a bit when the boy beside him looks over his shoulder, and together, they watch London fall away below them.
“This bit never gets old. I’m always a bit sad to see it go, but the city looks so beautiful.” Alex has to agree. They’ve got a horrendously early flight, but seeing London all lit up from above almost makes it worth it.
“Have you flown out of London a lot?”
“Whenever I fly it’s from here. My family lives nearby, and I went to Uni in London.”
“It’s a nice city.”
They watch together until London becomes merely a bright dot against the darkness of the English countryside. The other boy pulls away first, putting in earbuds and starting the movie Alex said was good. Alex starts his own moving not long after, trying to ignore the handsome boy next to him, resisting the urge to make sure he’s liking the movie. The stewardess comes out with snacks, and Alex gets coffee, hoping the second dose of caffeine will turn him into a being who is more human than simply an embodiment of exhaustion. The boy next to him gets tea, which is very British, and Alex tries not to find it at all endearing.
The in-flight map shows them just leaving Wales when Alex feels a weight on his shoulder. Something soft is tickling the side of his jaw. He turns slowly to see the other boy asleep, his head flopped onto Alex’s shoulder. His movie’s still playing, and Alex knows there’s an explosion coming. The loud noise could wake the other boy up, so Alex leans over to pause the movie, careful not to jostle his new passenger too much. If this stranger is tired enough to fall asleep on someone else on a plane, he deserves the nap, and letting him sleep is the least Alex can do.
He sleeps through most of Alex’s movie, and Alex finds himself humming softly when they hit some minor turbulence. The other boy starts to wake up a bit, but he settles down with Alex’s humming, letting out a soft snore. Alex just smiles, counting it as a success. He sleeps until the cabin staff start wheeling the breakfast carts down the aisle, when Alex shakes his shoulder gently and says, “Hey, they’re bringing food. You’ll need to let them know what you want.”
“Huh? Oh, oh no, I’m… I’m so sorry.” He’s turned a fantastic shade of red, but Alex shakes his head.
“No; it’s fine. Don’t be sorry. I’m glad I make a good pillow, though I have to admit, I’m a bit insulted my movie suggestion wasn’t good enough to keep you awake.”
“I’m so sorry. It’s… I’ve been up late recently, and it was an early flight, so I got like two hours of sleep… I’m so embarrassed.”
“Don’t be. We’ve all been there, and I didn’t mind. If… if you still need sleep after breakfast, and if you only got a couple hours last night you definitely will, you’re welcome to use my shoulder again. We can even use one of these mini pillows to make it more comfortable.”
“I’ll… I’ll try my best not to take you up on that, but it’s been a lot recently, so I can’t promise anything.” He might be trying to make a joke, but it’s not convincingly light-hearted enough.
“That’s okay. If… Would it help to talk about it? Whatever’s been a lot, I mean. If you want, I’m here, you can just unload it all on me and then we’ll get off this plane and never see each other again.”
“It… it really is a lot. I don’t want to overwhelm you.”
“No; go for it. I’m in a gap between stressful things. I can handle it.”
So they get their meals, and the other boy tells him that he’s traveling to do research on queer history. He’s gotten an incredibly competitive grant, and the whole application process was stressful. His family’s been waiting for him to do something with himself since he graduated a few months ago, and that only made the application and waiting process more stressful. Then, in the midst of getting his travel plans and documents together, he came out to his family, and his grandma through a fit. His mom was nice about it but hasn’t been close to them since his dad died, and his older brother stormed out of the house and hasn’t been answering any of his texts or calls. He’s still got his big sister, but he’s terrified he’s lost half his family. He almost gave up the grant to stay home and work things out, but his sister made him keep it, so he left them all behind, and he’s terrified that he did the wrong thing because what if he could have fixed things by staying? Should he have come out at all? Was breaking apart the family he has left really worth it?
By the end of his story, there are tears in his eyes, so Alex offers a shoulder and he sniffles, forcing a bit of a laugh as he hides his face. Alex hands him the breakfast bar that came as part of the meal service and talks about his own coming out, about how scared he was that his Catholic dad especially would be upset, but how they’d taken it well and they love him. Then he hands the other boy his own breakfast bar and talks about how coming out was really the only way he could be close to his family, because you can’t really have a relationship with someone if you’re hiding such a massive thing from them. By the time he’s starting to get into how things are going to get better, the other boy has fallen asleep again, and Alex just smiles as he turns back to his movie, stealing a muffin from the other boy’s breakfast tray.
When the stewardess comes to collect their dishes, she tells Alex that they make a cute couple. There’s really no point in correcting her.
A movie and a half later, there’s an in-flight lunch. The other boy wakes up more easily this time, though he still turns bright red when he realizes he fell asleep again. Alex just grins and makes sure he actually eats most of their lunch, since his breakfast was small. He vows to stay awake and actually watch the movie Alex suggested, and as a joke, Alex leans over to watch with him. But then, well, his shoulder is nice. He’s wearing a soft sweater, and the ball of muscle below it makes a nice pillow. And, well, it was an early flight. Alex was up at 1:30 to make it to the airport by 2:00, and every coffee he’s had since has worn off by now.
The next thing Alex knows, someone’s shaking his shoulder, and his head is bouncing a bit. He opens his eyes to see the other boy chuckling.
“We’re landing soon; I thought you might want to watch. I at least hoped you’d open the window so I could. I hope I was as good of a pillow for you as you were for me.”
“You’re a great pillow,” Alex says, yawning and stretching a bit, then turning to push the window open. “Is DC your final stop?”
“No; I’m on to New York for research on the Stonewall riots. What about you?”
“I’m headed to New York for school. Uni, I guess, for you fancy brits. I’m starting my law degree. Hang on, I’ve got my flight number somewhere. It leaves at like… 9:15ish?”
“So does mine! What a coincidence.”
“Here; give me your number. We can find each other after customs and get coffee or something? Will your phone work in the US?”
“It should connect to the airport’s internet.”
“Perfect; we’ll meet up after customs and get coffee or overpriced food or something.”
They exchange numbers, and on the ground, Alex texts the other boy (‘Henry’, according to the name he put in Alex’s phone) to complain about how long customs is taking. Henry tells him to be patient, and Alex rolls his eyes.
They meet up at a Starbucks near their gate, then again at a coffee shop near Alex’s apartment their first week in New York City. Then again at a coffee shop near where Henry’s living. Then they meet up for dinner and a movie, and when Henry falls asleep in the Uber on the way back to Alex’s apartment, Alex pays the driver to make four trips around the block so he can wake his boyfriend up slowly, reveling in the way Henry’s face is squished against his shoulder and the softness of Henry’s hair on his jaw.
Really, when Henry falls asleep on him looking so good, it’s no wonder Alex fell in love.

Greater sandhill cranes near Medaryville, Indiana, in 2017.(E. Jason Wambsgans / Chicago Tribune)
Thousands of them have been flying over our neighborhood the past few weeks, telling us that spring is here, notwithstanding all the other doom and gloom. If they are flying low enough and there are plenty in the V-formation, or several flocks are flying overhead, one can hear them inside with the windows closed. They are loud and fun to watch. Excerpt from this Chicago Tribune story:
Chicagoans are once again thrilling to one of the region’s most dramatic signs of spring: the return of flocks of crimson-capped, 5-foot tall, loudly bugling sandhill cranes from as far away as Georgia and Florida. Neighbors have been alerting neighbors, Facebook birding pages have lit up with sightings, and text alerts have ricocheted back and forth among cellphones: “The sandhills are coming! The sandhills are coming!”
Sandhills like to travel with the wind to their backs, and tend to favor inland areas, not the shores of Lake Michigan, although there are exceptions. In 2016, when an estimated 30,000 sandhills flew over the city in a single day, flocks were spotted in lakeside neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park, according to DNAinfo.
Almost wiped out from lands east of the Mississippi River in the 1930s, sandhills are among several large-bird comeback stories in the region, with approximately 97,800 birds in 2018, a 37% increase over 2017, when there were 71,400, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
With studies showing declines in small-bird populations, particularly insect-eating varieties, the cranes’ annual return has additional meaning.“Sandhill cranes are a bird of hope for me,” said Eric Gyllenhaal, 69, who monitors local birds for the Bird Conservation Network.

Sydney is nothing like London. Well, there’s still cabs, but they’re white, not black. There’re crosswalks linking pedestrians from one sidewalk to the other. But here the drivers more often than not don’t slow for those on them. There’re people here, but there isn’t Myc. You thought the move from home to the land Down Under would be easy - it was another continent. Australians spoke English. Most of the nuances were understood between the cultural differences.
But for once, you were on your own.
No Mum and her odd assortment of cats crammed into her country house on the outskirts of the city limits. No Sherlock and his antics every other afternoon. It was only you and your thoughts, and FaceTime every afternoon at five o’clock, and lots of paperwork.
The move to Sydney was to advance your career. A bold move, for a girl who came from nothing. A girl who had nothing before graduating with scholarships and better marks than ever seen before. That’s where you met him; the last year of studies at university, at a small party. You were in a dress salvaged from a friend of a friend, a nice afternoon tea dress from three seasons ago, he in a two-piece suit, holding the jacket over his arm, a plastic cup of warm beer in his hand.
Your mutual friend introduced you to one another. He was bored of everything already, and you, well, tried your best to not make a fool of yourself around the other people who smelt of old money and perfume from Côte d'Azur. You cracked a joke, and his façade broke, or, was it the beer that broke it? It didn’t matter. By graduation, you were inseparable, and while he climbed the ladder of government, you worked on your connections in the ecopolitical sphere.
Working in the British embassy was nice. But it wasn’t exactly what you wanted. It was…like a resume builder. Except, instead of working at Burger King for three years to get customer service as a tag on it, it was a whole new country. But it was fine. Good. Great, even. You wore a nice uniform, worked through people’s problems, and found solutions for your own. When you ran out of milk in your shared flat, you spent half an hour wandering on foot around Ultimo looking for a Tesco, but it wasn’t until you heard someone’s unmissable Aussie accent when it clicked that you needed a Coles. Or a 7-11 corner store. It felt strange to hear Australian voices on the radio stations in the break room, and the bus ride from the flat to work. The money was weird, too. Everything was cheaper than British pounds, but it would be hard to scrape enough of it by to buy necessities.
Five o’clock in the evening never came fast enough, especially today. You checked out of work, and on the walk to the train station – sometimes catching the train from the Quay was nicer than the buses that were engraved with everyone’s five-minute romance initials – you’d boot up your phone and hit call on Myc’s profile, and thread your earbuds into your ears in muted excitement. Just like now.
But when he’d usually pick up after three dials, it rang out. You frown, but you think nothing of it.
The robot recording of a woman reading the train times overhead haled the next train as if from thin air, and boarding, you sat amidst the rest of the sweaty bodies. Springtime here was nothing like home, and your stay in Sydney was for six months on probation, and up to two years if you worked well. But that meant two summertime’s, and if spring was anything to go by, you dreaded the oncoming heat. The one summer you spent with Mycroft in Barcelona – he was at a conference with the local Catalonian and Spanish officials – oh, that made you feel so warm, your skin felt heated as if from the bones out, your hair and clothes too heavy and hot.
When the doors opened at Central station, the people around you left the carriage like blood from an open wound. You followed suit, pocketing your phone. It was a little walk from the station, but, you took this time to clear your head. A whole day of talking to people, sorting problems out often left you with a head that felt like a fruit blender.
When you pass by the McDonalds, you take five minutes to order a coffee.  When you walk by the university, you crane your neck up to see the ugly tower that looms over the city skyline. When your phone finishes its shuffled playlist, you realise you’d been using your roaming data the whole time and turn the phone to airplane mode in panic. Even though your apartment had a shoddy version of the National Broadband Network (“Not to be confused with the TV channel”, your roommate Blue would laugh, or, when she was in a bad mood, it was known as “the fuckin’ NBN”), mobile data was like a prized possession. You practically lived off public Wi-Fi.
Someone on the street corner of Broadway and Mountain is hustling flyers at unsuspecting pedestrians, shouting about the end of the world. You chuckle to yourself, evading the paper held to you that reads The End Is Near!; at least there were still fundamentalists over the globe. By the time you make it into your street, your feet are aching more than ever, and your shoulder weighed down by your handbag and all its contents.
Blue is in the main room when you unlock the front door; the kettle is boiling along to the sound of her meditation CD that’s playing from the machine beside the tiny TV. She’s in her yoga pants and a giant t-shirt that says RIDE FOR PRIDE with a motorcycle underneath surrounded by rainbow fire. Blue looks up from her Downward Dog when you place your keys in the bowl, a grin on her freckled face.
“You look too happy to be a pretzel.” You comment, kicking off your heels into the shoe rack by the door. You blink, noticing a pair of shoes that you hadn’t seen in the rack before; brown brogue-laced leather. “Blue…”
“There’s a surprise in your room, _________.” She winked, and, along with the sultry sounds of the meditation track, went up, and twisted into Monkey pose.
You make it to the stairs, and with every step, you’re not sure what you’re to expect. Has Blue’s nephew come over again for homework help with his mathematics? He never came over on weekdays, and today was a Thursday! And that didn’t explain the brogues at all! The door to your room is ajar, and pushing it all the way, your mouth goes dry. Eyes blink, unsure if this is just another of your vivid fantasies. Mind racing.
“_________! Love –,” Mycroft comes to you, steadying you on your feet. It’s then you know it’s real, because his hands are cool, and they stick to your warm skin. You’re speechless, but perhaps that is for the better, because at once, you drop your handbag to the floor, and push Mycroft further into your room, hands up, cradling his face.
“Oh my God, you’re real,” you whisper, words finally found. “I’ve missed you so, so, so much.” You sniffle, laying your head against his chest.
“_________, don’t cry,” he says, holding you close. His lips brush over your forehead, slow kisses, soft, like the wings of a butterfly on your skin. He’s wearing a suit, like always – it’s a blue which brings out his eyes, and the jacket is stitched with a tiny pattern of diamonds. And now its covered with splattering of your tears. “I didn’t come all the way over here to make my girlfriend cry.”
You chuckle at that. “But you did, Mr. Holmes.” You take a breath, and a seat on the side of your bed. “How did you get here – and I mean in my room.” Mycroft licks his lips, holding back a smile. He unbuttons his jacket, and sits beside you, leaving some space between you both.
“Your roommate Harleen found me loitering around near your verandah, and let me in. I assume it’s because she recognised me from your photos.” He frowned. “Does she always let in men she doesn’t know?”
You shake your head. “Harley – I mean, Blue – she’s more interested in Terry.” You blink, and remember Mycroft doesn’t know her as well as you do, “Uh, they’re a couple.” You feel a blush cover your face and place it in your hands. When you look up, you turn to your boyfriend, and address him. “So, why are you here, Myc?”
He blinks, perhaps disarmed by the wording of your question. But Mycroft is not the sort of man to be disarmed, and if so, not for long. “I heard your desperation in our last video chat,” he says, looking at his hands. They sit in his lap, empty.
“So, you took time out from your position in England, caught a plane –,” you stop yourself, and sigh. “I really should be grateful you’re here…it’s just that there’s never such a thing as a free lunch. Especially with you, Myc.”
“I –,” he stops himself, perhaps hearing the words he was to say in his head.
“Is it Sherlock? Or your position, do you need any help?” your voice rises with every question, “Your mother –,”
“It was me,” he replies, voice so very small. You’re suddenly aware that the both of you are not alone in the house, because it’s then when Blue’s meditation music plays a loud gong noise. “_________, I missed you.” He wipes a hand over his face, and you notice the slight hint of stubble threatening to appear. His eyes have bags that look heavier than your handbag. And they look sad. “I can’t believe that now, of all times, I realise how you feel all the times when I’m away for work, wherever it be. I took time from work, bought a ticket here – _________, you have no idea how much I missed you.”
“I think I can guess,” you whisper.
You lean over the bed to the fan that’s plugged into the wall. As soon as it is whirring to life, your skin begins to prickle with the welcomed sensation of goosebumps. Mycroft sheds his jacket, and moving toward him, you take hold of his tie. Under your fingers, it loosens.
It’s just like all the times in London when Myc would come to your place above the green grocer in Russel Square. You’d kick off your shoes, and he his, you’d ruffle his hair – to his dismay, but, you knew he liked it when you did it – and before you shut the curtains in your room, you’d loosen his tie. It was a ritual. A spell. And always, like always, the Mycroft who walked from the street would transform into the Mycroft who walked into your heart.
But this time, it’s too warm to do what you’d usually do after the tie comes off, and like two lovesick children, you lay beside him in the bed, wearing nothing but your underclothes. Mycroft looks so at home in your quaint bedroom, and it makes your heart swell.
It isn’t until your phone chimes – a message from your co-worker – that the fantasy of the situation breaks, and you’re back to everyday life. And you’re once again a bidding political advisor, and a lucrative socialite.
“When do you go back?” you whisper. Your breath is warm, and opening his eyes, Mycroft sighs.
“I have to fly back this Sunday.” He replies. “It’s a twenty-hour flight. I managed to pull some strings with the airplane, so I can try to stay longer than I would if I went commercially…”
You feel that melancholy return to you. It’d be only four – no, three days that you see him.
And then how long?
You’re not a needy person; Blue knew that. When she’d be watching Netflix as she wrote her column, you’d quietly drink your tea, when she’d have Terry and her friends from Darlinghurst over, you’d chat politely within their circle, complain about the ongoing strawberry scandal, try to understand the current situation of national politics (“I’m the Prime Minister, all I had to do to get the job was stab two other people in the back to get here!” one would say, and watching silently, you’d hear another two friends shout, just like Monty Python, “I am your Prime Minster!” – “Well I didn’t vote for him!”)
“I suppose that’s how it’s going to be, now,” you reply. “We’re like two kangaroos passing in the night on the highway.”
Mycroft frowns. “Is that a local expression…?”
You shake your head. I don’t know. I just made it up. But if anything, what I know of Australian culture is that in making things up and going with them, it’s commonplace.” You laugh at that. “As much as I want to be happy you’re here, Myc, I can’t help but wonder if a shoe’s about to drop.”
He gathers you closer. If it weren’t for your fan, it would be too hot to be this near to one another. Mycroft plants a kiss on your forehead, and you kiss him back, but he moves at the last minute, and it lands upon his nose.
“I’m not here to break up with you, if that’s what you’re thinking, _________.” He murmurs.
It’s then when you’re startled away from Mycroft’s embrace, because Blue’s shouting up the stairs, “I’m making chili con carne for tea, _________!” You chuckle to yourself, as she goes on, “Is your hot businessman friend staying for dinner?”
You feel your cheeks heat up at that. But Mycroft’s the one who remedies it and grasping the railing that looks over the hallway – it felt so strange to have a loft bedroom – he calls out below, his British accent so different to Blue’s native Aussie twang, “Yes, the hot businessman is staying for dinner,” he says, a cheeky look on his face. He’s never been this relaxed in so long, and you let out a laugh at his wording. “But you can call me _________’s boyfriend.”
When he returns to the bed, you’re sitting up, pulling on your around-the-house shorts and Myc’s old sleepshirt he let you keep, shaking your head to yourself.
“What is it, love?” he asks, pulling his trousers back on.
You chuckle. “I’m always your girlfriend. You know, everywhere we go in London, to whomever we’re introduced to. Sherlock knows my name, but simply calls me ‘The Girlfriend’. But here…” you smile. “Oh-ho, the tables have turned, Myc! My boyfriend!”
He kisses your temple, and gathers your hand in his, and walks with you downstairs to where the smell of chili is wafting from. “Yes,” he admits, “I guess I am.”
Sydney is somewhat like London. There’re tourists everywhere, and the people who walk the streets who are locals don’t think twice about the knowledge they know. There are people here, like Blue and her friends and when you’re not working at the British Consulate, Blue and her friends take you to the most fantastic shows and places you wouldn’t find on your own. The beach is around the corner, and the ice-creams on Manley Island drip down your hands before they’re even scooped in their cones. Mycroft leaves every time he comes, but comes every four weeks or so, bringing his laptop, and plenty of free time to be with you.
Perhaps Sydney wasn’t so bad after all.
