Save Me Before I Drown (Ashton x Bondi Rescue)
a/n: so i’ve been watching a lot of bondi rescue lately (people on my snapchat can attest to this 🤧) so why not make a 5sos x bondi rescue story because we love our australian boys if you wanna start watching the show this youtube channel has a lot of the episodes, i don’t think you can stream it directly from the channel it airs on if you’re not in australia sadly so this channel is really amazing. netflix might have a couple seasons depending on where you live too :) word count: 6,107 whOop summary: a visit to australia’s most famous beach turns into something more, and maybe it’s fate that swept you into this whirlpool of events--both literally and figuratively. THERE DEFINITELY IS GOING TO BE A PART 2 I’M JUST VERY BUSY W/ EXAMS RN I’LL POST THAT AS SOON AS I CAN (but we all know i prefer writing over studying for exams so we’ll see how fast i can come up with something)
GLOSSARY: resus: short for resuscitation (that’s what they call it in the show uwU) defib: short for defibrillator, basically an AED AED: automated external defibrillator CPR: cardiopulmonary resuscitation
It is a beautiful day at Bondi Beach, one of the most famous and crowded beaches in the world. The sky is blue and the water is clear, at an ideal temperature for the sweltering heat hitting the east coast of Australia. Tens of thousands roam around the one kilometre stretch of sand. People of every colour and size and from all over the world travel to Bondi to experience the best beach first hand, and you aren’t going to be an exception.
Mixed between the beachgoers are the boys dressed in blue, the professional lifeguards at Bondi. Every day of the year, whether rain or shine, they patrol the beach and risk their lives to save other people’s. Their professionalism and dedication are definitely something you look up to. Having been a huge fan of the TV show Bondi Rescue, you are even more excited to finally step on the soft sand at the beach early in the morning, to catch a first glimpse of the Sydney coastline before it becomes overcrowded with people.
Despite the early hours, the beach is already busy with activity. Surfers who visit almost everyday set up their surfboards near the south end, where the rips are a bit stronger and better suited for their needs. Some joggers run along the paved road by the pavilion while others prefer to complete their morning exercise down on the sand. A few families have already set up their beach towels by the north end of the beach, mothers running after their small children in colourful wetsuits into the shallow ends of the water.
You stand by the ramp leading down to the beach. Not in a rush of any sort, you take it all in. From the crystalline green colour of the sea to the soft stretch of sand, the wind gently ruffling your hair and bringing strong whiffs of the ocean onto your skin. You can’t believe you’re finally here. After dreaming about being down south for years, you received a scholarship from the University of Sydney in your last year of high school, and as soon as your last summer as a kid was over, you packed your bags and trekked down to the country you desperately waned to visit. It’s mid-December and summer is in full swing—something that is sure going to take some getting used to from the snowstorms and freezing rain at this time of the year back home in Canada. The sun isnt too hot yet, and you decide to join the locals in a morning run before it gets too warm.
When you finish your circle around the vicinity, the car park is almost full and there are about a thousand people on the beach now. You let out a small surprised gasp when you spot the lifeguard buggy speeding down to Backpackers with the blue rescue board secured to the side, looking exactly like the way it did in the show. You grin to yourself, knowing that you can finally witness everything that goes down on Bondi Rescue in real life.
Deciding that it’s time for a nice cool-off in the water, you sling your bag over your shoulder and make your way to the south end of the beach, hoping to catch a few rescues and internally fangirl over the lifeguards. You aren’t disappointed when one of the guards, whom you immediately recognise as Whippet, paddling into the water to save a young girl onto his board. They were the reason you became a lifeguard at your local pool at the age of 17, after all.
You wouldn’t say you’re a bad swimmer. Compared to those who can’t swim a single stroke, you are way better. But compared to the kids who competed at regional and provincial meets in high school, you are nothing more than an amateur. As mean as it sounds, sometimes you found it funny that people who can’t swim would risk going into the deep waters thinking a small paddle board would do enough to keep them afloat against the strong currents. Then again, a lack of experience with beaches like this and a lack of knowledge about surf safety makes it hard for people travelling here from landlocked places like Belarus to completely grasp just how dangerous the ocean can be. Scared that you would embarrass yourself somehow when going into the water, you specifically read over the Waverly Council’s website on surf safety and how to stay calm in strong rips.
The moment your feet touches the water, your body relaxes. The sensation is cooling yet not too cold, the surface already warmed by the sun. You stroll deeper into the water, catching a few waves in the process. Looking north from where you stand, you slowly take in the sight in front of you. Bright umbrellas and towels now dot the white, smooth sand, the infamous red and yellow flags flying high in the breeze, and of course, the lifeguard tower at its vantage point in the centre of the beach, overlooking everyone’s safety.
Before you know it, you’re being swept away from the beach by the morning tides. At first, you don’t find it too troubling as long as you keep your arms and legs moving, and the shore only seems a short swim away. You are confident enough about your swimming skills to be able to do that. There are people around who can’t swim nearly as well as you but still afloat anyway.
You don’t think anything bad is going to happen to you. And many times, that’s exactly how disaster strikes.
Almost as soon as you let down your guard about your location in the water, a strong wave hits from behind and forces you under. You paddle a bit harder, struggling to keep your head out of the water. Another untimely wave carries you deeper into the ocean, splashing your face with its salty goodness and your eyes screw shut instinctively.
The ocean can be merciless sometimes. And it’s always the people who don’t respect its potentials who get into the most trouble. In hindsight, you wish you haven’t been so ignorant. Watching the show from the safety of your couch you thought it impossible for you to be caught in a rip like that, the “I’m-a-way-better-swimmer-than-those-people” attitude being the thing that almost killed you.
You start to panic now. With your energy slowly running out, your legs start to cramp and you can’t seem to keep your head above water any longer. Every few seconds a wave overtakes you and sweeps you under, and in desperation, you flail your arms helplessly in the direction of the shore, praying to God that someone is going to see you.
What if the ocean takes you? What about all the hopes and dreams you have for the future? You start to tear up a bit now. You have your whole life planned out ahead of you. Upon finishing your studies at the University, you plan to return to Canada and join the foreign service and travel the world as a diplomat. You’re going to get married and have a happy little family of your own.
You are way too young to be taken from the world. You know it, but the ocean seems to have a mind of its own as the waves slowly take you under.
Perhaps you are hallucinating. Perhaps you watched too many episodes of Bondi Rescue that you can practically hear the crackle of the static on the lifeguard’s radios and see whoever on duty in the tower zooming in on you from his binoculars, before grabbing his radio and telling someone nearby to go save the “girl waving down at South Bondi”. You have never been so close to death as you have felt then. All the thoughts in your mind are replaced with an urgent need for oxygen, but your end up inhaling mouthfuls of salty, bitter seawater instead. The cramp in your leg is unbearable now, pain shooting from your calf straight through your body with every tiny movement. You grit your teeth and try to fight the pain in order to keep your legs kicking with little to no avail.
This is it. This is how you’re going to die. Stupid, stupid Y/N, you think to yourself.
“Hey! You alright?” A voice calls, and you squint against the bright sunlight to see an aqua blue paddle board heading your way.
Your saviour.
You have never been the religious one but at that moment, you thanked heavens or whatever is up there for hearing and answering your prayers. Maybe they think you are way too young to be taken, too.
The lifeguard expertly stops his board right when he approaches you and sits down at his end of it before reaching a hand to you, all in one swift motion so graceful that you would think he is in a ballet of some sort, not a life-and-death rescue some one hundred metres from shore. You reach for his hand and he pulls you onto his board effortlessly, before telling you to face the front and lay flat on your belly.
I know that, you think to yourself.
“Are you alright?” He asks again, his voice full of concern.
You gasp, your body relieved to be taking in oxygen now, and forces yourself to speak so he doesn’t think you’re half dead.
“Yes. Thank you so much.”
“No worries, sweetheart.”
Your heart skips a beat at his last word, his thick Australian accent making it sound ten times better than it can ever sound with a Canadian or American accent that you’re so used to. Despite the coolness of the water, you can feel your cheeks begin to heat up at the embarrassment of having to be rescued.
The lifeguard starts paddling then, and you hold onto the ropes on the edge of the board, still in shock from what just happened.
“Here’s wave. Hold on!” He yells over the sound of the crashing wave, and you brace yourself for the impact. For a brief second as the cold water rushes over you, you feel as if you’re back in the deep end struggling for air, and you let out a small whimper at the traumatic memory.
“All good?” He asks again. You wonder how he can hear everything on top of the sounds of the ocean. Maybe that’s why you chose to be a pool lifeguard and not a waterfront one.
“Yeah. Sorry.”
He chuckles lightly, and your subconscious mind immediately thinks that he’s laughing at your stereotypical Canadian trait of apologising all the time. How would he even know where you’re from? You comfort yourself, riding the wave of your anxiety just like how he manoeuvres the waves of the ocean, only less fluently against the tides in your mind.
Finally you are in the shallows, and you hop off the board, less gracefully than you would’ve liked, and end up almost tripping over yourself on the sandbank. The lifeguard laughs again and offers your a hand to help you stand. Being too proud to accept his help, you stand up by yourself and refuses to meet his eyes.
“Strong one out there, eh?”
He tries to break the awkward silence, and that’s when you see his face for the first time.
His wet, golden curls are tousled by the wind and his skin is tanned a healthy shade of copper from the long hours under the sun. Green eyes crinkling with a smile and deep dimples decorating the sides of his cheeks, he is pretty much one of the best looking men you have ever seen.
Stumbling over your words instead of your legs this time, you nod and laugh nervously, not trusting your voice enough to speak.
“Did you swallow any water out there?” He asks as you make your way back to the buggy.
“A couple mouthfuls,” you admit, pulling a face at the salty taste in your mouth. He mirrors your expressions and begins securing his board back onto the side of the buggy: “Keep an eye out for any unusual feelings in your body, okay? The water in your lungs might cause secondary drowning. If you feel anything weird, come see us right away in the tower, alright?”
You nod again, wrapping your arms around your body as if to cover yourself from the cold, and maybe from his eyes as well.
“Thank you.” You finally say. You don’t want him to go back yet, but you know he has a job to do.
“No worries at all, love. Where are you from?”
Your heart does a little flip when he continues the conversation that you thought was for sure going to end there. He hops to sit on the front hood of the buggy and puts his sunglasses back on, scanning the water again.
“Canada. All the way up north.” You try to make your tone sound light and easy, but failing to do so as you chuckle nervously at the end of your sentence. From what, you’re not sure. Maybe the aftershock from the near drowning, or from talking to him.
“Ah, makes sense. Don’t have waters like this up there, do ya?”
You shake your head no, “The closest I’ve been to is near the lakes.”
He reaches his right hand out this time, “I’m Ashton. Nice to meet you.”
You shake his hand, his grip tight on your hand just like it did when he pulled you out of the water, “Y/N. Likewise.”
Ashton takes his eyes off of the water for a second to turn and look at you, and you avoid his gaze even though you can’t even see where he’s looking from behind his dark sunglasses.
“How did you get that gash over there?” He points out suddenly, and you follow his finger until your eyes land on a nasty cut on your thigh. Weird. You don’t feel any pain, let along remembering where you got that from.
“I might’ve kicked on something when I was…out there,” you say, shuddering at the memory.
“Let’s go get you cleaned up.” He says, hopping off onto the sand now. You follow suit, waiting tentatively as he circles around and gets into the driver’s side. “I’m assuming you want a ride?” Ashton asks cheekily, and you blush, climbing into the other seat.
The first few moments is spent in awkward silence—well, at least to you. Ashton doesn’t seem too bothered by this silence as he fixes his eyes on the sand and people ahead of him, but you, on the other hand, feels like you should at least say something to break the ice. He has been the one initiating all the conversations, after all.
“I watch your show a lot,” you blurt out, and mentally slap yourself for saying something so stupid.
“You do?” The question comes out as more of a statement of disbelief than an actual question, “I didn’t think they aired them in other countries.”
“Well, they don’t, but there are people who puts the episodes up on YouTube.” you explain, smiling at yourself remembering the days you binge watched whole seasons on Netflix and YouTube.
“That’s sick, man,” he grins, the dimples appearing again, “So are you down here because of the show?”
“Not entirely. I’m starting my first year at the university after summer.”
“What are you studying?”
“Politics and international relations.”
“Isn’t that what diplomats do?”
“Yeah. I wanna do that after I finish my degree.”
“So you must be pretty smart. Judging from how beautiful you are.”
You stare at him in shock. He does not seem to be the least bit embarrassed or self conscious about what he just said, but grins back at you instead.
“I—I’m not so sure about that, Ashton.” You stutter. It would be a lie to say that you haven’t dreamed about meeting a lifeguard here and flirting with them, but it all happened so fast that you didn’t think he would be the one to flirt first.
Then again, guys are all cheeky bastards sometimes.
“That’s complete bullshit.” He pulls the buggy to a stop in front of the lifeguard tower and climbs out, waiting for you by the stairs.
“Welcome to the tower,” he says, waving you to follow him up the stairs. Your heart beats a bit faster as you get closer to where all the action takes place. Cameras are positioned around the outside edge of the tower with fluffy microphones held above your heads with long, black sticks. It feels like you have just walked into a movie set with no clue about your role or your lines.
Ashton pushes open a door that has a green first-aid sign on it and there it is. The bed in the corner of the room, the oxygen tank on the wall, and the steps that lead up to the heart of the tower.
“Take a seat on the bed there, I’ll be right back.” He points at the bed, and you make your way there and sit down carefully. You hear muffled conversation through the radios, the sound quality so bad you can’t decipher what they are saying. A camera man approaches you and asks you a few basic questions while you wait for Ashton to come back. Basic questions like your name, where you’re from, and how you ended up being here in the tower. You shake your head bitterly at yourself, knowing that your first ever television debut will be you whining in pain from the gash on your leg.
Thankfully, Ashton returns not so long after the camera man finishes his interview, and you smile gratefully at his presence. He takes out a roll of gauze and some saline solution from the red first aid bag, putting them down on the bed next to you and squats down in front of you. As he snaps on some gloves and unrolls the gauze, you feel a sudden surge of self consciousness and stop him before he can begin: “I can do this myself.”
He looks up at you from his position on the floor, puzzled: “Is everything okay?”
“Yes! I just—I’m a lifeguard too, you know,” you blurt out once again in a desperate search for an excuse. In fact, you don’t want him to touch you in fear of ending up falling for him. As much as you want a relationship, you’re not sure if you can handle it at this point of your life.
“You are?” He pauses then, gauging your reaction carefully.
You nod, “I’m actually not a bad swimmer. I feel so embarrassed to have to be rescued like that.”
Ashton cracks a smile then, “I’m your knight in shining armour.”
“Maybe. Just a little bit.” You joke back, his smile contagious as you find the corners of your lips curling upward as well.
“Just give me your leg, damn it. Let me prove to you I’m more than just a ‘little bit’ of a saviour.”
You sigh and reluctantly straightens your leg for him to clean up. Despite his broad shoulders and strong muscles, his hold on you is surprisingly gentle. If you weren’t feeling it first person, you never would’ve believed a man like him is capable of doing such things. He carefully dabs at your wound with a saline-soaked piece of gauze, you wincing in pain at the first contact. As if soothing a crying baby, he absentmindedly mouths “shh” at you as he wraps your leg in fresh gauze.
“He’s whipped,” you hear a voice speak, and you look up to see Reidy whispering with Jesse, their eyes flickering between Ashton’s swift movements and your stiff posture on the bed. Jesse nods, his blue eyes twinkling with delight even from your distance, and whispers something indistinct back to Reidy.
Ashton has way better hearing than you, of course, you should’ve learned by now. He finishes by cutting off the excess gauze and pinning the bandage to your leg with a safety pin before sitting back and admiring his handiwork, all while defending himself from his best mates’ teasing.
“I am not whipped,” he shots back, “I’m just doing my job.”
“Sure you are, mate,” Jesse giggles and climbs back to the main part of the tower. Your heart aches a little when Ashton dismisses everything simply as him “doing his job”. But really, you can’t blame him. For all you know, maybe he’s just a friendly person like that to everyone. It’s a pretty big deal to be friendly and trustworthy as a lifeguard, you know that. Maybe he’s got a girl at home. A very lucky one, for sure.
“Aw, would you guys just drop it?” He stands up from his squatting position an wiggles his legs to straighten them out, getting nothing but another round of laughter from above. You debate whether or not to ask for a picture. It’s not everyday you can end up being inside the lifeguard tower with all the guys from the show. But your anxious self is afraid of taking their eyes off of the water, which is the most important thing here. And okay, you’ll admit it, you selfishly want a picture with Ashton as a souvenir so you can go home and proudly tell your friends and family you met a hot lifeguard here.
“Would it—would it be too much to ask for a picture with you guys? Sorry I know that must be so annoying, you probably have fans come and ask for that all the time—” you start, but is cut off by Reidy sliding himself across the room on his spinning chair, making room for you to come up to the main part of the tower, “Of course, love. Come over here, we’re gonna put you in the middle.”
Your face lights up in surprise and you make your way up the three steps slowly, careful not to put too much weight on your newly bandaged leg. Ashton follows suit, running a hand through his wild curls trying to tame it but with no avail.
“Hey! Hoppo! We got a big fan here. She’s a lifeguard too, all the way from Canada,” Reidy calls out to a blue shadow moving past the doorframe. Your eyes widen as the figure retreats his steps back into the room and of course, it’s no other than the top man, Hoppo, standing in front of you.
He smiles warmly and extends a hand, “Nice to meet you.”
You return the gesture, “The pleasure it’s all mine. You’re really the reason I became a lifeguard in the first place.”
“Get in the picture, Hop,” Reidy says again, pulling his boss and best friend into the frame of your phone camera. You all grin big at the three second countdown and there it is, the picture you longed to have for the past five years of your life. You can barely contain your excitement as Jesse hands you back your phone, saying a million thank you’s at everyone as they reply with kind words in return, before resuming their duty of scanning the crowded beach for anyone needing a helping hand.
Just as you say your last thank you and get ready to leave, the radios crackle with yet another message.
“Can-Am to Bondi Central. A couple clubbies just pulled a girl out of the water down at Backpackers, possible resus there. We’ll need the defib just in case.”
Without missing a beat, Ashton grabs his blue uniform shirt and replies to the message, already half way out of the door, “Ashton to Can-Am, I’m on my way with the defib.”
You stand there, frozen. Even though the hours and hours of lifeguard training have prepared you for the worst possible scenario, you have never needed to perform CPR or use an AED on anyone, luckily. It’s only your second or third hour at Bondi and already a possible resus. Guess the beach didn’t earn its fame for no reason.
“Y/N? Want a ride?” Ashton calls out, the blue defib kit already slung over his shoulder.
“Oh! Sure!” You say quickly, giving one last thanks to the boys in the tower—who are busy focusing their binoculars on the buggy charging at a crowd of people in full speed—and hurriedly follow Ashton out the door into his buggy. He manoeuvres the car fluently, honking at sunbathers and beachgoers on the way as he presses down hard on the gas, going at a speed you thought impossible for a beach car like this.
A full crowd is already formed around the clubbies clad in red and yellow, and another lifeguard is kneeling next to a young girl who looks barely over fifteen years of age, unconscious and pale on the sand. Ashton jumps out the buggy seemingly before it even stops completely, and runs to grab the defib kit in the back. You step out as well, only much more tentative, and squeeze into the centre of the scene through the part in the crowd when Ashton shoulders his way inside.
The ring of death, that’s what they call the crowd.
Everything is a flurry of activity now. The lifeguard who arrived on scene before Ashton, Jethro, is testing the girl’s pulse. One of the clubbies is securing an oxygen mask onto her mouth and nose. Ashton, on the other hand, unzips the blue bag and takes out the defibrillator and grabs the nearest towel to wipe off any excess water on her body.
Your legs feel like they have been filled with lead, so heavy that you can’t even move them. You remember what your teacher told you at your first lesson at training.
“If there’s a real emergency, you might want to sit the first one out and let someone more experienced handle it. You will most likely be in too much shock to treat the patient. But watch whoever is treating them, and learn from them.”
But this time, not only are you shocked from seeing someone so lifeless for the first time, you spot the similarity between the young girl and you just a few moments ago. Only that the lifesavers got to her a second too late.
That could’ve been you laying unconscious on the sand if Ashton hadn’t shown up at your rescue.
Fighting the urge to throw up into the sand, you force yourself to kneel beside Ashton and offer with a slightly shaky voice, “I can help.”
“I’m sorry, who are you?” Jethro asks without looking up from the patient, his hands moving faster than your brain can at the moment. You’re a little taken aback by his bluntness, and you stutter as you answer, “I’m Y/N. I’m a trained lifeguard too, I can help.”
“Y/N, start CPR.” Ashton tells you, not looking up from the patient either but sounding more like a firm request rather than a command. You lose some of your nerves at his voice, eerily calm amongst all the frenzy.
“Ash, what?” Jethro stops his movements for a moment, looking at Ashton in disbelief.
“I pulled her out of the water half an hour ago. That girl’s got a lot of fight in her. We’re gonna need as many hands on deck as we can.” He shrugs nonchalantly as he takes off the girl’s necklace and checks her upper body for any other sign of injury.
You take a deep breath and brace yourself for the impact. You have never performed CPR on a real person before, only on the plastic dummies that had a red light blinking at you every time you went too fast or too slow, or not deep enough. You place your right hand on top of your left and cross your fingers, your palm against the centre of her chest. Taking another deep breath to steady yourself under the scrutinising looks from all the bystanders and a slightly skeptical Jethro, you begin the compressions.
“One, two, three, four, five…” you count out loud, scrunching your face up as you feel the girl’s sternum cracking under your compressions. Even though it means you’re doing the right thing, you still feel terrible for breaking someone’s bones like that.
“Stop for a second,” Ashton says, and you pull back from the girl’s body, already panting from the first cycle of compressions. The clubbies are now trying to hold up towels around the girl to give her some privacy as the lifeguards untie her bikini top to place the paddles of the AED on her chest. The automated voice from the AED speaks and a hush falls over the crowd.
“Detecting heart rhythm…no rhythm detected. Continue CPR.”
You dive back in for a second round. The physical exhaustion is starting to wear you out. You never expected actual CPR to be this hard, but this is your moment to prove to Ashton and Jethro that you’re not just some dumb fangirl pretending to be able to save a life. The certifications from the Canadian Red Cross in your wallet aren’t there for nothing. You can’t let the girl down. She is too young to be taken from this world, even younger than you.
“Alright stop,” Ashton says after another cycle, and you lean back again, waiting for the AED to speak.
“Analysing heart rhythm…shock advised. Stand clear of patient.”
“Everybody clear!” Jethro calls out, and within a second all three pairs of hands that were previously on the girl’s body immediately retrieve and you watch as the paddles deliver a shock to her, her lifeless body flinching at the shock. You cringe, imagining how it must feel for the girl and her family.
As if your thoughts are broadcasted to the world, you hear a loud cry coming from the crowd and you look up to find a very distressed woman in her mid 40’s, being held back by the volunteer lifesavers.
“Is that the mother?” Jethro asks Ashton, and he nods before turning to her, “Do you know how long has she has been in the water for?”
“I don’t know! I left for a minute to get some food and when I came back she-she was gone!” The mother says, barely able to catch her breath.
“Okay. We’re doing everything we can, and an ambulance is on its way, okay?” Ashton reassures the mother, and she nods tearfully, still fighting the grasp of the clubbies to try to get to her daughter.
“Resume CPR.”
You listen to the automated voice and dive right back into compressions. Right as you are approaching the end of the second cycle, you see Ashton making his way around the patient to get to you. Before you even have time to ask him what he’s doing, he has already swiftly taken over the compressions at the top of the third cycle: “I’ve got this.”
You lean back thankfully, panting as you sit back on your legs. Despite being relieved from the physical labour, your heart is still at your throat as you watch the girl, still lifeless and her lips now a blue colour, her body shaking with every rhythmic compression.
“Anything?” Ashton asks, his curls bouncing to the rhythm as he continues.
Jethro places two fingers on the girl’s neck and waits, his blue eyes looking at the sky as if silently hoping for a miracle. It has now been around ten minutes since the girl was first pulled out of the water, and God knows how long she has been there for before the volunteer lifesavers found her.
“I’ve got a pulse!” He says in delight.
Before Jethro can even finish, the girl comes about with a gagging sound and coughs up what is probably the most water you can imagine being inside someone’s lungs. She coughs violently, her eyes still shut as you and the other guards hurry to lean her on her right side to clear the fluids from her mouth.
The crowd begins to clap, but your mind isn’t on the pride you should be feeling when they applaud you. You look in the direction of the tower and see another buggy coming down with three paramedics sitting in the back, and you gently elbow Ashton to tell him the good news.
“What’s your name, love?” One of the older, more experienced paramedic asks as he kneels down in the sand next to you, the circle of lifesavers around the girl getting even bigger as the rest of the paramedics join in.
“Her name is Emily,” the girl’s mother answers seeing that her daughter is still too weak to speak. Now freed from the volunteer lifesavers’ grasps, she runs to her daughter and pushes a strand of wet hair from her face.
“Okay, Emily, we’re going to take you to the hospital. You’re gonna be alright, okay?”
Emily nods slowly, her eyes barely open. You take a step back now and watch the paramedics insert an IV needle into her arm and wrap her in a blanket before putting her on the stretcher, driving into the distance.
You let out a long breath you didn’t even know you’re holding and stand up at last, pins and needles in your feet from sitting on them for so long. You feel it now, the pride and accomplishment for saving someone’s life.
The crowd disperses slowly, going back to their business on the beach. Ashton and Jethro pack up all their stuff and start walking back to the hastily parked buggies not so far away, their voices low in conversation. You don’t follow, though. It is time for them to go back to their jobs without anymore distraction from you. As much as you enjoy Ashton’s company, you have to let him go. But apparently Ashton has a different idea.
“Hey! Y/N!”
He waves you over to the buggy. You look at him questioningly but comply, slowly making your way across the sand. The beach is now packed as time approaches mid-morning, with more sunbathers and fewer surfers, probably to avoid crashing into the swimmers in the water.
“Yeah?”
“First of all great job out there,” Ashton says, the dimples returning to his face as he smiles, and you couldn’t help but smile as well.
“Yeah, you did great,” Jethro adds, a completely different person from the one who almost scolded you a few moments ago. He reaches his right hand out as greeting, “Sorry for yelling at you back there. I was, well, as you can see, very nervous. I’m Jethro.”
You shake his hand and grin, “No worries, I completely understand. I guess you know my name already from Ashton? I’m Y/N.”
The blond boy nods and pushes his long hair from his face. Ashton leans on the side of the buggy and looks down at his feet buried in the warm sand before returning his eyes back to yours, “So Y/N. I have a question for you.”
“Shoot.”
“Seeing as you performed so well under pressure…I—no, we see a lot of potential in you. I mean, we have to talk to Hoppo about this, of course, but um, would you be interested in coming to work with us?” He rambles as opposed to his normal confidence.
“I—what?” You stare at him in shock. You? Working here on Bondi? With the best lifeguard service in the world?
“You know, if working on the beach is your thing,” Jethro shrugs and makes a face, “Summer just started. You have plenty of time to get used to the ocean here.”
“So? What do you say?” Ashton asks hopefully.
You fall silent now, your eyes hopping between the two boys. Neither of them looks like they’re going to burst into laughter any second and admit that they’re joking with you. Quite the opposite, in fact. They look dead serious.
So this is real. It’s a job offer from the best of the best. You think back to the moment when you couldn’t help the grin on your face as people applauded you for your work. You think about how proud you felt then. You did a good thing, and being a lifeguard at Bondi certainly has it ups and downs but you are doing the people a service. You are saving lives.
It doesn’t really feel like a hard decision to make.
“Hell yeah I’m in.”

6/25/17 x2 (Time change is a mess)
Well this morning was supposed to start off much earlier than it did.. Funny story, last night, when I set an alarm for 5:30 am it was set for weekdays and considering today was not a weekend it didn’t go off. Instead, the alarm that was supposed to warn me 5 minutes before leaving was the alarm that woke me up. Nia and I were so panicked and so rushed and lets just say it is a miracle that we did as much packing as we did last night. Essentially all we had to do was change, and put a few things away. We rushed so fast and got ready with literally 4 minutes to spare before having to be down stairs to catch the bus. Wow, we really could have missed our coach, which would have made us miss our flight, and well I do not even want to think about that. We made it though! Thank god!
We headed to the airport and got to experience true Sydney traffic. People drive crazy here, especially in a big bus. We made it to the airport, got our luggage off the coach and headed into the terminal to check in. Check in was smooth so they we headed to customs. Customs operated the same way that it did in Melbourne. You took your passport, had to put it into this scanner essentially, then it directs you when to move through the gate, and then you have to do whatever you look like in your passport in order to be cleared through to the next checkpoint. Honestly, it is really cool, and helps Border Patrol to have less work. It is extremely effective and it was very impressive. I wonder how long it will take the states to hop on this bandwagon.
Then we went through security, nice and smooth, and then made our way to the gate. We grabbed some breakfast, and just waited until it was time to board the plane. I was and still am dreading this flight. I am genuinely worried about my ears, and i just wish I could be in a place of comfort right now. Even though this flight is 2 hours shorter than when we came here we are now flying in the day so we have to at least try to stay awake for 7 hours of it. You can only sit for so long and watch so many movies, and have no wifi. After this, I will not want to fly for a long while.
I am currently sitting on the plane and I cannot help but to reflect on this entire trip. There have been highs and lows (literally) but overall I do not think I could have asked for a better experience abroad. I have travelled almost 20,000 miles, been to 7 different cities, and conquered a good portion of the continent.
Throughout my time here in Australia I have done some amazing things. I will list a few here:
I have eaten some of the weirdest food I have ever eaten in my life. Seriously everything in Australia is different.
I have drank some of the best coffee at some of the most hole in the wall cafes.
I immersed myself in cafe culture.
I had class at the Melbourne State Victoria Library.
I have gone to many museums (too many museums).
I have found some great rooftop bars.
I wandered in the alley ways of Melbourne to find hidden treasures. (Some of my favorites were Hoiser, Hardware, and Degraves).
I went up to the Eurekya Sky deck which is the tallest building in Melbourne.
We all bonded with Asian Beer Cafe (ABC- also the place that shall not be named)
I rode the Melbourne Star Observatory over the nighttime skyline.
I leaned a lot about the Aboriginal culture through our guides and classes.
I saw wild koalas, wallabies and kangaroos.
I saw thousands of penguins migrate from sea to land at Peter Island.
I shopped at the Queen Victoria Market which is the largest Open Air Market in the Western Hemisphere.
I visited the Shrine of Remembrance and the Melbourne Botanical Gardens
I went and saw a footie game in Melbourne's largest and most famous stadium.
I travelled to St. Kilda beach and Luna Park.
I went to Federation Square many times.
I travelled to Port Douglas where we went to one of the most beautiful beaches, ate some great fish and chips, and had some great gelato.
I was able to feed and pet kangaroos and wallabies, and I got to hold a koala!
I snorkeled on the Great Barrier reef with one of the most legendary people who snorkel on the reef and call it home.
I went to Karaoke night at Iron Bar
I stayed in an ecolodge where I really had to face my fear with bugs. Shout out to all the insects and bugs in our cabin.
I swam in a spring fed creek (and fell).
I watched a movie in the outback under the stars.
I went caving and spelunking.
I explored Aboriginal art in caves and saw some amazing views of the outback.
I watched the sunset at Balancing Rock.
I tent camped in the freakin' outback. (I will never be camping again).
I had to use a freakin' dunny… never will I ever again.
I made friends with a wallaby dog named Menzy.
I was able to see rescued wallabies and their babies on site in my backyard.
I drove in little yellow busses to the Daintree Rainforest.
I went night spotting 2 too many times.
I went jungle surfing in the Daintree Rainforest.
I ate the most unique gelato you can find in the world at Daintree Ice Cream Co.
I did the Mijin swing in Cairns (TWICE).
I made friends with some travel company and ended up getting free drinks and food all nigh at Gilligan's. Along with meeting some girls from Ohio and all over the world.
I watched a ladies night pole dancing competition that really turned into a strip club. (YIKES)
I was able to take a harbor cruise in Sydney to experience Vivid Sydney.
I was able to meet up with Lys to celebrate my birthday in Sydney (2 times)!
I went shopping in the Queen Victoria Building and the shopping district in Sydney.
I was able to go to many clubs and spend many late nights with these amazing people I now call my friends.
I traveled to Bondi and Coogee beach.
I was able to attend the Sydney Film Festival and see the premier of Okja (which everyone should see)
I toured the Sydney Opera House and saw a show called Hot Brown Honey!! (The best show I have ever seen)
I went to St. Mary’s Cathedral.
I visited the Hyde Barracks and Hyde Park.
I climbed the Pylons on the Sydney Harbor Bridge
I went whale watching
I tried Kangaroo.
These are just some of the highlights, I know thats a long list, but that is because there isn’t enough words or time to explain everything I have done this trip or what I have learned.
I have learned a lot about myself throughout this trip. One big thing, as silly as it seems, is how much we take for granted cell service and wifi everywhere. Throughout this trip I did not purchase a phone plan so the only time I could use my phone was when there was wifi. I was unable to use maps to navigate through the city, I was unable to talk to friends and family, and I realized how much I use my phone for things. It was refreshing in a way to “unplug” sort of speak but I also now realize the next time I go to another country at least data will be necessary for navigation.
I also learned that I am not as great with directions as I had originally believed. Typically on family vacations I am the navigator and I have a very good idea of my whereabouts, however, this was not the case here in Australia. I spent most of my time turned around, and dependent on Kayla’s maps. When I finally got it down, it was basically time to leave.
I also realized that I am moderately high maintenance. Prior to this trip, I felt that I was relatively low maintenance but this trip has changed my perspective to moderate. I hate bugs, I hate night spotting, I hate when bugs are in my space, I hate seeing the biggest spiders I have in my life, I am not a camper, I hate dunnies and I really enjoy having comfortable accommodations where I do not share them with bugs. I also realized that I am more picky than I thought. For the meals that were provided, for the most part, I ate them, but others I said “not a chance in hell."
This trip slo has reaffirmed that I love American food. As I have mentioned in previous posts, everything in Australia is different. From bacon, to ham, to “burgers”, to their spices and sauces, even their bagels. It was always interesting ordering something at a restaurant and being completely confused on what it was. For example, one of the weirdest things we realized is that in Australia they called everything a burger versus a sandwich. In the states, a burger implies a beef patty, here a burger doesn’t mean patty unless it specifies there’s a patty. Also, there food is all pretty bland, and they rely heavily on sauces, like aioli. I love aioli so this was okay with me. Long story short, I miss American food, I miss ordering and knowing exactly what I am going to get, and I am excited to not have to constantly google what the food is.
Throughout this trip, I realized I have an extreme gelato obsession (problem). I love gelato and we ate it far too much on this trip. I have no regrets, but jesus I will miss gelato .
This trip has also been extremely eye opening to the fact that in America we really are ignorant to other countries and what is happening in their worlds. In Australia, on their news they have a specific segment dedicated to around the world, the biggest highlight being America. In America, we are so sheltered and unconcerned with the rest of the world and I think that this says a lot about us.
I have learned so much about Australia that I could probably talk for days about their national identity, injustices, Aborigines, their colonization, convict culture, and their so called multiculturalism. Throughout one of my classes we examined if Australia is actually multicultural or not and I am confident to say that I do not believe they are to the extent that they preach that they are. We experienced a lot of racism, discriminatory, and ignorant behaviors and comments while in Australia as well as many cultures are incredibly underrepresented in society.
Prior to these classes, I had no idea that Australia was colonized by convicts, I had no idea about the Aboriginal people, stolen generations, hygienic dorms, or any of the injustices they faced, nor did I really have any knowledge about cinametography, or anything about Australia really. This trip has made me much more knowledge about Australia and has showed me how much more there is to learn about the world and every other country in it.
This trip has also made me more confident in traveling by myself. This was the first time I have ever flown without my parents and I did very well. I was initially very anxious about it but at this point we have flown so much it is a breeze. However, that doesn’t mean that I am consistently going to want to do.
This trip has also introduced me to some amazing people. The girl gang: Nia, Kayla, and Morgan have been the girls since day one and we just have gotten significantly closer. We all got along very well, and we balance each other out well too. Cody was also a part of our group, it was always Cody and the girls and I also enjoyed his company. Coming on this trip I was worried because I really didn’t know anyone besides Cici, but surely enough I made some friendships for a lifetime. We are already planning our first reunion once school starts. I met many other people and made many other friends that I am so happy have come in to my life. It will be awesome to see more familiar faces on each campus.
Now, I have talked about all the good, and clearly it out weighs the bad, but it wouldn’t be fair for me to not even talk about the lows. One thing that really bothered me was that to pretty much every event we were late. For someone who is extremely time oriented, this frustrated me. I also felt like a lot of our accommodations could have been nicer in the middle of our trip (not Sydney or Melbourne). I do not do well with bugs in my bed, or in my shower, or pretty much in my space at all. When I am in nature, I am in their space, but when they are in mine, it is a no go. Also, there was not enough time scheduled in between our activities. A lot of the time we had an hour to eat, go to the other side of the city and find our destination. We also were left constantly to fend for ourselves and find things on our own with no help and most people with no cellular or data. We also had way too much work. I believed, along with everyone else, that the reason we had bootcamp was so that the work would be minimal when we were actually abroad. Nope, that wasn’t the case, and to top it all off we have some brutal final projects to complete once we get back. I do have to keep telling myself that it is 6 honors credits but still, it is freakin’ annoying. I wish we had spent at least one more day in Cairns because I loved that city and there was so much to do and see. Lastly, we went to way too many museums. Some were very enjoyable and informative, but all the art museums weren’t necessary, and a lot ended up repeating the same stuff eventually. B esides, these things, I really have nothing to complain about, My biggest frustration was with all of the school work but I am STUDYING abroad so I guess you just have to deal with it.
Everything that was a low, wasn’t truly a low because it was all part of the experience. This trip has pushed my personal limits, it has exposed me to many things I would never do in my normal life, and it has given me a new found appreciation for basic things like plumbing, wifi, air conditioning, and clean beds and accommodations. As you can see, nothing outweighs the highs of this trip. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sidenote:
This flight is miserable, we still have 9 hours left and then I have to catch my connecting flight to San Diego. Then my second vacation starts. I am already exhausted, and I am going to be jet lagged so this will be interesting. I am so excited to be reunited with my family, my boyfriend, Zoey, and just normal life again.
Surprisingly, the food was actually pretty good on the way home, much better than on the way here. I am struggling with trying to time my sleep. It is currently 2:15 pm on the 25th and we still have 9 hours of the plane ride left. I will probably attempt to take some medicine soon that will help me pass out so I can try to get a good 5 or 6 hours of rest. The hard part will be staying up for the entire day. Not to mention, trying to wrap my mind around the fact that I will be reliving the 25th again!
I arrived in Lax at 6:30am after a very long flight. A miserable flight. We went through customs very quickly and it was very similar to Sydney and Melbourne which was cool to see. Baggage claim took forever, granted there were over 800 passengers told distribute luggage to but my patience was wearing thing.
The icing on the cake was when I found out my 10:00 am flight had been delayed until 1:15 pm. I was livid. I physically could not sit int eh airport for that long, nor was it worth it to take a 50 minute flight like that. We ended up getting completely refunded for my flight, canceled it, and then I got an Uber to San Diego.
My driver was very nice and I was in SD before 10:00 am. It was so good to see my parents and the Murphy's and the Mattingly’s! We headed to breakfast and just caught up on everything. I missed them so much!
now it is time for the second vacation to start, the real struggle will be staying awake. Jet lag is about to be REAL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don’t think there are words to describe how much I have learned and how life changing this experience abroad has been. I think traveling abroad is dangerous because now all I can think of is “Where to next?”
I am so lucky to have been given this opportunity. I want to thank everybody who pushed me to go abroad, and helped me make it possible. Specifically my parents, who worked so hard and sacrificed so much to be able to help me make my dream a reality. I would like to thank Devin, my friends and family (that includes you Mattingly's and Murphy’s) that either supported me or donated to my funds for this trip, and lastly Barrett Staff, specifically Susan and Miranda who pushed me to go on this adventure. This trip literally wouldn’t have been possible without all of you and I am forever grateful.
Thank you for the memories Australia! Cheers!
