The Big BOB OFC Data Dive
When I first joined this fandom in April, it was the middle of a pandemic and all I wanted was a big wish-fulfillment project to work on - and I was surprised to find that, for a 20 year old fandom, Band of Brothers is still going strong, and, perhaps more surprisingly, is representing very well for one of my favorite fandom tropes - the original female character.
After several discussions about overused tropes and pet peeves, and because I am simply odd like this, I wanted to go back through fic to see if there were any patterns over time over a) what professions OFCs are placed in in fic and b) which BoB guys get more OFC attention.
In order to answer this question, I went to two major, cross-fandom archives (AO3 and FF.net) manually scraped data, stuck it in a spreadsheet and played with it a little bit. (Pivot tables; they’re great.) I was going to try and make a graph, but this was already starting to take a little longer than I had anticipated, so I’m going to summarize in words for brevity.
I recognize this is a very small subset of a small fandom. I acknowledge my research method is faulty and would not hold up to peer review. I know that there is a lot more of what I would call 'ephemeral' on platforms like Tumblr that's been excluded from the basis of this survey.
Why not Wattpad, Merc? I chose not to survey Wattpad only because I'm unfamiliar with the platform, and because its search and indexing features make it unfriendly to the manual data collection I was using. Furthermore, as a mixed-use space, I feel the conventions vary strongly from the other two archive spaces represented in the data.
Owing to changes in tagging systems, system purges, and fandom migrations to other platforms, this may be an incomplete dataset, but  still serves to take a look at trends over time. I joked to a friend that this project started feeling a little bit like fandom archeology, going through strata of accepted norms.
AO3 Data:
2020 was the BoB Year of the OFC. In 2020 alone, 35 separate authors updated OFC fics on AO3, compared with 9 the year previous.
I trust myself to have pretty good OFCdar - as in, to be able to watch a show and know who's more likely to show up in these types of fics. When I first watched BoB ten years ago, my money was on Joe Liebgott and Lewis Nixon - and I wasn't wrong. These two have a very strong presence in the AO3 data, followed very quickly by Ron Speirs and Eugene Roe, although Don Malarkey also makes a very strong showing as well.
Lewis Nixon fans are in for the long haul. Nixon was more likely to have multi-part collections or multichapter fics dedicated to him.
There was a strong lull in OFC fandom activity in 2018 - prior to this, many OFC fics were routinely pulling 18-20 kudos. After 2018, the average drops to 10, with some outliers.
FF.net
I was surprised to find that FF.net is still a going concern for a subset of BoB fans; 17 OFC stories were published to the platform in 2020, with minimal duplication in the AO3 set.
The oldest fic in this set is from 2005, compared with 2011 in the AO3 data. The FF.net stories have a tendency to be longer, multipart fics, written over much longer periods of time. Their summaries tend to fit the legacy format for describing OCs - "[Name] is a [occupation] whose [reason for joining up] will [change her life/finally let her fall in love.]"
These stories ALSO have a tendency towards what I would call 'heritage tropes' - story ideas that I read a lot of in my early days as a fanfiction author but which I don't see too often in fics now.  There are 5 OCs in this dataset in time-travel fics, but there's also a couple that are magically related to a canon character, and, very interesting to me, there are also three stories where the character joins the company as a DISGUISED woman, a heritage trope if ever there was one. (Thank you, Mr. Shakespeare.)
FF.net OCs are much more likely to fit expected fandom norms in terms of their occupations; the majority are female paratroopers, nurses, or medics. The top romantic interests in this dataset? Richard Winters, Joe Liebgott, and Ronald Speirs, with Don Malarkey and Doc Roe rounding out the top five. BUT I noticed another pattern; when sorted over time, there are bands where multiple authors in the fandom are all writing for the same paraguy - and that that guy changes over time, while the authors remain the same. (You’re writing about Luz? We’re ALL writing about Luz.)
Another interesting trend in this data is the appearance of several authors who are writing what appear to be the forerunners of the now-ubiquitous tumblr reader-insert fic. These are stories in shorter, 1000-2000 word formats, unconnected to other works in a series with an unnamed protagonist whose occupation isn't mentioned in the story description.  They occur in the dataset in blocks by the same author, with three or four stories clumped around the same publish date, and their sole reason for existing seems to be to express or receive romantic interest from/in a paraguy, not tell a particular woman's story.
Takeaways:
Named But Not Appearing In Canon characters, Reader Inserts, and Original Characters are three distinct categories of fic with different target audiences. None of them are 'wrong' in any way, but I feel each should be tagged differently. Kitty Grogan, for instance, is named in the show but never appears, and while we have to speculate on what she's actually like, she's different than the characters we created out of thin air and should be tagged accordingly.
I know several fics being written by acquaintances of mine don't appear in this survey because, while the ship is tagged, they're not tagged as 'Original Female Character (s)' and several Reader Inserts found their way into the dataset because they're tagged incorrectly. (You all should FIX THIS.)
On AO3, fics with more comments were also more likely to have more bookmarks. Since comments are an entry point to beginning a relationship with the work's author, authors who engage in the comments seem to be more likely to have the type of followers who bookmark and return to a work. These works also tend to be longer, supporting the idea that continued engagement with authors over time is a good way to encourage them to keep creating.

Week 3: Future Thinking Tool Kit & Storytelling with Data
What global misconceptions did you have that were false or true?
The last of eighteen questions based on common misconceptions about The United Nations goals related to the total amount of raw materials used across the world annually, since 2000. I assumed that it stayed about the same but actually it has increased to about 70%. Over half of the people who took this survey got this question wrong. Thus, this alludes to the concern that presumably, most people are probably completely unaware of how bad the worlds state of consumption really is. The resource furthers this concern as the increase of consumption is not due to increasing population but that more people are becoming richer. Research shows that the increase is 3 times higher than the population growth over the past 20years. Ironically said, it seems as if when one problem solves itself, another is created. Which makes me think about my own motives to be wealthy as well as to be more conscious about my own styles of consumption. Ultimately, it is the misconception in itself and trends like buying more from Amazon or places like K-Mart (as a personal example) that are cushioning the major issue like a soft blanket. Not to be naïve, a massive part of the problem is that we think we can’t trust the data when in fact we can (derived from a UN report Gapminder, n.d.), that we don’t know enough or don’t care. The reality is that our current reuse, recycle and reduce or presumable circular economy is way past falling short – by 20 years and at an increased 70% to be exact.
At this rate we’ll run out of natural resources and in doing so, destroy many natural habitats. So, we can say goodbye to our beautiful environmental makeup and say hello to more ‘stuff’.
Not enough people are taking this personally; people should be taking this issue personally. This calls for a lifestyle makeover and not only makes minimalism that much more appealing but then puts the concept of business as the lifeforce of consumption into question. In a quote I read today it said that businesses should never be about making money but that it should be about serving it’s people or else it shouldn’t even exist. I wonder what the future of business would look like in the next 30 years; picture the revitalisation of indigenous concepts of business, less desire for stuff and a fully propelled circular economy. It sounds good but that’s nothing short of a utopia. However, the whole point of this was to become aware and to take this particular issue personally.

Introduction to Data and Storytelling:
Data Visualisation is the graphic representations of data that makes complex information more visible, better accessible, and easier to interpret. We can understand trends, relationships, and patterns between data in more compelling ways when we can visualise it than if we were to view it as a report or in plain writing. Unlike traditional approaches such as report writing, data visualisations primarily use colours, shapes as well as language cues to share information. The cruciality between simplifying or condensing large and complex data is the capability to correctly inform than to mislead. Moreover, the data literacy skillset encourages communicators as well as information receivers to critically assess data sources by combining better reading and understanding with smarter use and communication.

Introduction to the Futures Thinking Toolkit.
The Futures of Thinking Toolkit is interesting because it promotes a way of thinking about the future. The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) uses such design concepts along with a list of others to think about the future of New Zealand. Moreover, in the classroom, it can be a structured way to develop student’s futures thinking skills. This can be used in conjunction with system thinking approaches by observing and speculating mental models for the purpose of understanding past and present behaviours. Essentially, the toolkit supports analysis by offering prompt questions related to the creation of possible, probable, and preferable futures, whilst factoring in wild possibilities, drivers, trends and into the present of a given situation. Due to the fundamental tie and the interconnectedness of arguably all social and environmental problems my team and I chose to base our research on Sustainability and Climate Change in New Zealand. We will do this by first using elements of The Futures Thinking toolkit such as existing Situation, trends, and drivers to analyse impartial futures over the next 30 years.
Provide a documentation of your research issue on Sustainability and Climate Change; categorise your research on, Existing Situation, Trends and Drivers from the Futures Thinking Toolkit.

Impact Of Covid-19 on UK Housebuilding
New Figures Show Impact Of Covid-19 On Housebuilding Rates
Quarterly housing starts and completions lowest since 2000
Industry calls for assistance to construction sector
Wednesday 30 September 2020 – The number of new build homes started or completed in England between April and June 2020 fell to their lowest levels since the year 2000as Covid-19 hit the construction industry, according to new figures published today.
The figures also show, despite Covid, a longer-term decline in housing starts and completions, with the number of homes started or completed in the year to June 2020 also showing a sharp fall.
According to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the indicators of new housing supply figures should be regarded as a leading indicator of overall supply.
They show:
The number of dwellings where building work has started on site was 15,930 in April to June 2020 – a 52% decrease when compared to the last quarter.  It also follows a recent trend of a slowdown in growth with six of the last six quarters showing a decrease.  Starts are 67% below their March quarter 2007 peak and are 7% below the previous trough in the March quarter of 2009. It is the lowest quarterly starts figure in the seasonally adjusted time series (which begins in the year 2000).
There were 121,630 estimated new build dwellings starts in the year to June 2020, a 26 per cent decrease compared to the year to June 2019.
The number of dwellings completed on site was 15,390 in April to June 2020.  This is a 62% decrease compared to the last quarter and 64% below their level in the same quarter a year ago. Completions are now 67% below their peak in the March quarter 2007 and 37% below the previous trough in March quarter 2013. It is the lowest quarterly completions figure in the seasonally adjusted time series (which begins in the year 2000).
An estimated 147,180 new build dwellings were completed in the year to June 2020, a decrease of 15 per cent compared to the year to June 2019.
Clive Docwra, managing director of property and construction consultancy McBains said:
“Today’s statistics bear out the huge impact that Covid-19 – and in particular the Spring lockdown – has had on housebuilding rates.
“The government target of building a million new homes in the new five years was always going to be a steep challenge, but the pandemic has dealt a heavy blow to that ambition.
“The industry is now facing a double-whammy – trying to recover from the impact of Covid but also suffering from the uncertainty over a Brexit deal – with investors holding off putting money into new developments until the picture on a withdrawal agreement becomes clearer.
“The Government will no doubt point to its recent planning White Paper as the answer to building more homes, saying that it will mean ‘permission in principle’ will be given to developments on land designated for renewal to speed-up building, but the uncertainty and resulting fluctuating values driven by Covid and Brexit are reducing the incentive on developers to build in the short term.
“The government could address this by temporarily staggering or deferring Section 106 planning obligations – where developers are asked to provide contributions for community infrastructure – so that developers are encouraged to complete housebuilding projects as soon as possible.”

UK Residential Market News
Rental Sector Strength Comment
We post comment below in response to the RICS monthly residential market survey.
Elisabeth Kohlbach, CEO of Skwire comments: “Doom and gloom surrounding the news that the UK residential market is set for a ‘bust’ in the coming months overlooks a bright spot in a major segment of the residential market – the rental sector.
“The PRS sector is a growing part of the UK’s housing mix and the demand for this part of the market is not going away. Moreover, with lenders introducing a range of restrictions to cope with the spike in demand for mortgages following the announcement of stamp duty relief, many would-be buyers are struggling to get on the ladder and will no doubt turn to the rental market once again.
“While traditional destinations for BTR investors, such as London, may no longer be as attractive as remote workers flock to towns and cities beyond the capital, investors should look to the regions, which offer an exciting and untapped opportunity. Institutional investors should look beyond the traditional high density city-centre developments and seize the opportunity to tap into a rich pool of existing stock across the UK.”

UK house prices rise in July
Halifax House Price Index for July 2020
Halifax has this morning released its House Price Index for July, showing that house prices have risen month-on-month and year-on-year in reaction to the Stamp Duty Land Tax holiday introduced earlier in the month.
While this is positive news for the sector, can this momentum be maintained?
Jamie Johnson, CEO of FJP Investment “Today’s House Price Index shows that the stamp duty holiday is having its desired effect, encouraging buyers and sellers to make a cautious return back to the property market. The release of pent-up demand is driving up house prices, slowly making up for the losses that were incurred at the height of the pandemic.
“The big question now is whether this initial burst in activity can be maintained over the next few months. Will house prices continue to grow; or will the momentum fizzle out? There is no clear answer at present. Nonetheless, today’s House Price Index makes the case for cautious optimism.
“Importantly, I do not believe the coronavirus has dampened investor demand for UK real estate. Property’s resilience and ability to quickly recover any losses in value in times of crises makes it a top asset class for both domestic and overseas buyers. Once there is greater certainty about the future of COVID-19 and the post-pandemic recovery, I anticipate buyer demand to return in full force.”

UK Stamp Duty Changes
8 July 2020 Chancellor’s ‘mini budget’ for green jobs misses mark on transport and housing, says to CPRE
Commenting on the Chancellors ‘mini budget’, Tom Fyans, campaigns and policy director at CPRE, the countryside charity, said:
‘While we have seen promising starts on energy efficiency and shoring up rural hospitality businesses, the Chancellor has missed major opportunities to begin building back better when it comes to transport and housing investment.’

View from Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing on the stamp duty changes:
Kush Rawal, Director of Residential Investment from Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing comments: “We welcome the Chancellor’s stamp duty holiday, which makes shared ownership homes an even more attractive option for people looking to own their own home. Removing stamp duty from almost all initial share purchases means that key workers will be able to buy a shared ownership home with as little as two months of rent as their deposit.”

Housebuilding Rates Fall – Even Before Coronavirus Impacts
Thursday 26th of March 2020 – The number of new build homes started and completed in the last quarter of 2019 fell below government targets, according to new government figures published today – and the industry says the coronavirus pandemic is set to impact these further.
According to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the new build dwellings figures should be regarded as a leading indicator of overall housing supply.
Today’s figures show that:
On a quarterly basis, new build dwelling starts in England were estimated at 34,260 (seasonally adjusted) in the latest quarter, an 11 per cent decrease compared to the previous 3 months and a 17 per cent decrease on a year earlier. Completions were estimated at 44,980 (seasonally adjusted), a 1 per cent decrease from the previous quarter and 3 per cent higher than a year ago.
Annual new build dwelling starts totalled 151,020 in the year to December 2019, a 10 per cent decrease compared with the year to December 2018. During the same period, completions totalled 178,800, an increase of 9 per cent compared with last year
All starts between October and December 2019 are now 99 per cent above the trough in the March quarter 2009 and 30 per cent below the March quarter 2007 peak. All completions between October and December 2019 are 78 per cent above the trough in the March quarter 2013 and 7 per cent below the March quarter 2007 peak.
Clive Docwra, Managing Director of leading construction consulting and design agency McBains, said:
“The government’s ambitious housebuilding target – delivering a million homes in the next five years – was always going to be extremely challenging, and the latest statistics bear this out. However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will mean this is now virtually impossible.
“Many sites are empty, supply chains have been disrupted and multi-million pounds worth of private investment is on hold for the foreseeable future. That will knock back housebuilding rates months, if not years.
“The government has already announced an unprecedented package of measures to help support business, but once we’ve turned the tide on the virus further help, such as tax incentives, will be needed to get the UK building again.”

UK Housebuilding Policy
UK Government Approach to Housing Shortage – Budget Reaction
The UK Chancellor announced a raft of measures aimed at significantly increasing levels of home building and “reviving the British dream of home ownership”.
Key amongst the Chancellor’s statements were the abolition of Stamp Duty Land Tax on homes under £300k for First Time Buyers, £15.3 billion of new financial support for house building over the next five years (which includes money for the government to buy land as well as delivering supporting infrastructure) and more money to help SME builders.
This is in addition to the £10bn extra funding already announced for the English version of the Help to Buy shared equity scheme.
Some reactions to this week’s UK Budget from key built environment representatives:
“In essence the abolition of Stamp duty is the kind of sweeping move we needed to provide hope at the bottom end of the market and hopefully helping towards the aspirational 300K homes per year. As an employer, seeing younger architects get a foothold on the housing ladder is a strong hope and this is surely a welcome hand-out to bring the youth vote around for the Conservatives.
We would like to see more certainty on how the £44Bn figure to aid housebuilding will actually materialise into capital expenditure from Central or Local Government. The budget won’t solve the disconnect in planning, unless some of that cash is pumped into increasing resources in planning departments.”
Graham Hickson-Smith, Commercial Director, 3DReid
“It’s good to see the government taking the housing crisis seriously with the final quarter of the speech devoted to this one subject, an impressive commitment to extra spending of £44bn over five years and the headline grabbing finale of the reduction in stamp duty. The devil though will, as always be in the detail.
The lifting of HRA caps is good in principle but there are no details at all, while the £34m for skills training sounds like a drop in the ocean when we are faced with a huge likely loss of construction workers post-Brexit. Other measures announced include the review to be chaired by Oliver Letwin which may, helpfully, lay to rest the myth that land banking is a serious problem – most developers being concerned to turn over their capital as fast as possible rather than tie it up in dormant sites.
Finally there is the reduction in stamp duty for first time buyers, which will undoubtedly appeal to younger voters, but the same measure would probably be much more effective, economically, as an incentive to retired people to downsize, releasing under-occupied houses into the market.”
Richard Morton, Richard Morton Architects
“We really welcome the Chancellor’s moves to boost the supply of badly-needed new homes. Policies which aim to lower the cost of land and bring forward more building sites, particularly in urban areas well served by public transport, are good news – and preferable to policies which make it easier for some people to afford high house prices.
But all of this new housing needs to be sustainable, in environmental terms, and here the government’s policies are seriously lacking. It wants five new garden cities, but has said virtually nothing about what defines them.
The Budget has not addressed the critical need for green and low-carbon infrastructure and low-impact homes, not just on green fields, but everywhere. Nor has this budget addressed the need to upgrade and retrofit millions of our existing energy-inefficient homes.”

UK Housing Expansion
Homebuilding in Great Britain
The Ministry of Defence has put 12 sites on the block to provide land for up to 15,000 new homes.
Government Defence Minister Mark Lancaster said the land sale was expected to raise £500m, which will be ploughed back into frontline defence budgets, reports https://ift.tt/19warTM.
The sale is the first tranche of more ambitious plans to support the government’s ambition to build 160,000 homes by 2020.
The MOD, which owns around 1% of all UK land, plans to slash the size of its built estate by nearly a third, with its current holdings stretching to 452,000 hectares.
As part of that plan, the Ministry has committed to generating £1bn through land sales during this parliament and contributing up to 55,000 homes.

UK Government Design Advisory Panel – New Housing Design Quality
Chair of RIBA Housing Group, Andy Von Bradsky, represented RIBA this week on the government’s Design Advisory Panel. The panel was set up under the coalition government and has been re-formed by the current government to advise on key policy issues, reports the RIBA.
The RIBA has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement that a Design Advisory Panel is being set up to ‘set the bar on housing design across the country’ and is looking forward to working with other panel members.
David Cameron announced the creation of the panel this week when he confirmed the go ahead for a new Starter Homes scheme, though the panel will inform government policies on housing design nationally.

The DCLG has already confirmed that panel members will include Sir Terry Farrell, classicist Sir Quinlan Terry and philosopher Roger Scruton alongside nominated representatives from the RIBA, RTPI, Design Council and Create Streets.
The panel will be chaired by ministers, so there are high hopes that it will have a genuine influence on policy. The Government says the panel will act as a sounding board, so that the housing and design industry can discuss policy issues with ministers and senior government officials. Its remit will cover:
Emerging housing and planning policy to ensure that good design is considered and embedded from the outset. Delivery of housing and planning policy to ensure that good design is achieved through Government’s programmes. Emerging industry issues and barriers to good design in housing delivery.

‘We welcome the response from Government to the Farrell review and our own recommendation to have more design advice available to Government when shaping policy.’ said RIBA Head of External Affairs Anna Scott-Marshall.
‘It is encouraging that the Government, industry and other professionals will work in collaboration to ensure that we build the right kinds of homes in the right kinds of places.’ Farrell is also enthusiastic and said the panel has the potential to make a real difference.
‘It builds on the recommendations of the Farrell Review (https://ift.tt/JuZyFn), which highlighted the need for more proactive planning and better placemaking as we attempt to address the housing crisis, with radically higher priority given to landscape, sustainability and the public realm.’

Press Release:
Through sustained reflection on aesthetics and politics, Sharif Waked (*1964, Nazareth; lives and works in Nazareth and Santa Barbara, California) has consistently pierced the absurdities of reality with playful and estranged encounters between various temporalities, cultural-historical products, and political events. On the occasion of his solo exhibition at CCA – Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv, the artist adopted the word Balagan, as its title. This word, which means chaos, disarray and confusion, originally comes from the Persian word “balchan” and it traveled across borders to other languages such as Russian, Yiddish, Lithuanian and Hebrew. Following the artist’s unique modus operandi – which is rooted in the conception of single artworks, often based on appropriated images, which are then “incarnated” (and numerated) several times through different media, formats and techniques – the exhibition includes both existing and recent pieces, linking different bodies of Waked’s work over time.
Just A Moment No. 4 (Away From You) (2011), appropriates footage featuring the Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, while she sings her iconic song Away From You, focusing on the stamping of her left foot just underneath the dress scraping her heal. While in Bath Time (2012) the artist restaged what would be the end of the day for the “zebra” – in fact a donkey disguised as a zebra – of the Zoo in Gaza, in Just A Moment No. 21 (Shit) (2018), outtakes of the aforementioned work shows its star performing the mainstays of everyday life: eating and shitting.
In Just A Moment No. 19 (Nimrod) (2018) Yitzhak Danziger’s iconic sculpture Nimrod meets the mosquito that in the Islamic narrative entered Nimrod’s ear and made their way into his brain to drive him mad, while in Just A Moment No. 17 (Smiley) (2016) an army of contemporary emojis struggle to save their smiling ancestor from destruction. Who are you? (2014) are twelve abstract figures based on Muammar Gaddafi’s outfits, titled after a fragment of the last speech of the late Libyan leader, in which he promised to hunt his opposition down to the last alley; in Tugra No. 5 (2013), the artist infiltrates Israeli soldiers’ most common directive in Hebrew-inflected Arabic – “rukh min hun!” [Get out of here!] – inside the sixteenth century calligraphic monogram (tughra) of Suleiman the Magnificent.
Crop Marks (2016) sees the artist’s self-portrait in an orange suit subjected to the print-house’s “guillotine,” cut at his neck and along the crop marks of printing and design conventions, whereas in MoM – Museum of Mosul (2017) the footage of ISIS’s destructive actions is reproduced as a promotional film for a now-rebranded museum. While in Contribute A Better Translation No. 1 (2011) an archive of slogans of the Palestinian struggle undergo mechanized translation against a backdrop of visual iconography, in Contribute A Better Translation No. 2 (2011) the Palestinian Declaration of Independence, written by Mahmoud Darwish, is transformed into Yiddish via Google Translate.
Just A Moment No. 15 (Pa-Pa-Pa) (2016) is based on the claim of Israeli criminologist and politician Anat Berko, who said there is no Palestine because there is no P in Arabic, and in Beace Brocess No. 5 (2012) a clip from the Camp David II 2000 peace talks is refracted into the era of silent film. In Just A Moment No. 5 (Jericho First) (2012), the Oslo Agreements of the 1990s meet a detail of a mosaic from the eighth century Umayyads Caliphate. Search (2016), exposes the questions haunting Google Israel, whereas in Jamal Al Mahamel (2016) the barefoot carrier lifting the weight of Jerusalem on his back depicted in Suleiman Mansour’s eponymous work is absent and the city gives to gold dots.
Balagan is also the title of a work on display in the exhibition. It is part of the series Arabesque (2016-ongoing) and in it along with the series dot.txt (2016-ongoing) – Waked disassembles the building blocks of images to reconstruct what appear as geometric abstract surfaces. In these series, Waked questions the division between the visual and the verbal, perception and deception, the visual traditions of the past and the digital manipulations of the present, to deliver in a rather formalistic fashion the questioning, breaking, and remaking of meaning. Following these premises, the exhibition offers a bird’s eye view of Waked’s art, surveying his work as a comprehensive whole.
“Sharif Waked: Balagan” is curated by Nicola Trezzi and it is accompanied by a printed matter in Hebrew, Arabic and English. The exhibition is supported by Mifal HaPais Council for the Culture and Arts. Hospitality kindly provided by OUTSET.

The Coast Is Not Clear - Signs of an Impending Major Stock Market Crash
http://topicsofnote.com/?p=5522&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr
Despite the recent correction, and regardless which popular metric you use; PE, Shiller's CAPE Ratio, or Buffett's Market to GDP comparison; this is one of the most expensive markets since 1923. The other two were the 1929 and 2000 markets and we know how those turned out. Incidentally, 1923 was the year the "Composite Index" was introduced, the S&P 500's precursor.
The record shows that, while stock prices can continue at elevated levels for a long time, they eventually reverse to the mean. That can happen in one of two ways. Either the market goes sideways for a long time until earnings catch up, or there is a sharp drop to bring prices in line with historical PE ratios - a reversal to the mean. History has shown that investors are not a patient bunch. They will put up with a sideways market for a while, but eventually they will tire of meager returns and put their money to work where they believe will yield greater gain potential. Once that ball gets rolling, the market exits en masse and a severe bear market takes hold. The upshot: there is a big market drop in store.
The question is when and was this past correction a hic-up or a prelude to the big plunge. A study of major bear markets indicates the latter is more likely. Indeed, a review of 28-plus -percent market drops since 1923 reveals there is always a preamble to every major bear market. Some folks are under the mistaken impression that stock market crashes occur at market tops. That is far from the truth.
The stock market may well be fickle, but providence is kind. It always gives us advance notice of a coming crash, grabbing our attention amidst our complacency with a surprise drop and providing an opportunity to get out before it crashes in earnest. This is shown in the analysis below for each of the following major bear markets (28% decline or more): 2007, 2000, 1987, 1973, 1968, 1962, 1946, 1937, and 1929. Intraday prices and daily closes are only available for the S&P 500 from 1950 on. Therefore, Dow Jones Industrial Average closes were used for the markets before that.
2007 The initial top for the 2007 market came July 17 when the S&P 500 had an intraday high of 1555.90. The index would drop the next week and eventually settle to an intraday low of 1370.60 a month later on August 16 - a drop of 11.9%. Henceforth, all highs and lows are intraday unless otherwise stated. The market would climb for seven weeks to reach a market top for the index of 1576,09 October 11, 2007 - 1.3% higher than its previous high. An initial 5.5% dip was followed by a quick recovery to 1552.76 October 31, before succumbing and dropping 10.8% to a low of 1406.10 November 26, 2007. The index would recover to a high of 1523.57 and continue on a series of lower lows and highs until its nadir of 666.79 March 9, 2009 for a 57.7% decline.
2000 The 2000 market gave plenty of warning before the Dot.com plunge. The market faltered right after opening the New Year January 3rd. After reaching a high of 1478, the S&P 500 dropped to 1455.22 at the close. It dropped below 1400 the next three days and recovered to 1465.71 - the high January 20, 2000. From there it did a roller coaster ride down to the 1329.15 low of February 25 - a 10.1% drop from its high thus far. The market finally climaxed at 1552.87 March 24, 2000. It would drop precipitously April 14 to a low of 1339.40 - a 13.7% drop - but then slowly recovered to 1530.09 by September 1, 2000, only 1.5% below its all-time high. Thereafter it steadily went down with some sharp drops followed by rallies but only to the downtrend line. The market bottomed at 775.80 October 9, 2002 for a 50.1% decline.
1987 The 1987 bear market was a swift one. After vacillating to a high of 337.89 August 25, 1987, the S&P 500 dropped to 308.58 by September 8 - an 8.7% hit. It quickly recovered to 328.94 by October 2, only 2.6% down from its high. It wobbled to a close below 300 October 15 before crashing the next Monday to close at 224.84 - a loss of 20.5% for that day. It would close lower December 4, 1987 at 223.92 but the low point for the move came the day after the plunge, October 20, when it dipped to 216.46 for a loss of 36.0% from the August high.
1973 This, along with the 1968 bear market, were part of the mega bear market that spanned 1967 - 1982. The S&P oscillated within the 100 and 110 range for most of the year. It cleared the 110-barrier in late summer only to dip below it again before making its final surge as the year closed. It peaked at 119.79 December 12, 1972 and then dropped 4.3% to 114.63 December 21, 1972. The New Year propelled the index higher reaching a top of 121.74 January 11, 1973 - a 1.6% gain from the previous high. It quickly dropped to 111.85 by February 8 and then proceeded to careen downward over a series of bumps until hitting bottom at 60.96 October 4, 1974 - a 49.9% loss.
1968 After an initial drop to start the year, the market climbed steadily from March through November finally topping December 2, 1968 when the S&P 500 maxed out at 109.37. The index dropped to 96.63 by January 13, 1969 (an 11.6% drop), fizzled in its rally coming within 0.43 points of the low March 17, and then rallied all the way up to 106.74 May 14, 1969. After coming within 2.4% of the top it succumbed finally hitting bottom...May 26, 1970 at 68.61. That was a 37.3% haircut.
1962 The stock market steadily climbed from October 1960 to December 1962 when the S&P 500 topped out at 72.64 December 12, 1962. Then it dipped to 67.55 January 24, 1963 for a 7.0% loss. The index quickly went back to 70 the next week and eked out a small gain the next month finally peaking at 71.44 March 15, 1.7% below the high. Thereafter, the index plunged to 51.35 June 25, 1962 for a 29.3% decline.
1946 The market had been on a tear since the latter part of World War II and started 1946 the same way gaining 8% by February. Intraday highs and lows for the S&P 500 were not available for the analysis so, hereafter, Dow Jones Industrial Average closes will be used. The Dow Jones closed at 206.61 February 5, 1946. The index then plunged 10% to close at 186.02 February 26. It quickly recovered its previous high and surpassed it on a bucking horse ride up to 212.5 May 29, 1946 - a 2.9% gain from its previous high. The bumpy ride continued until August when the index reached 204.52 on August 13 and then fell in exhaustion finally closing at 163.13 October 9, 1946 for a 23.2% decline. Despite a number of rally attempts, the market would continue to struggle until February 1948 with a maximum loss of 28%.
1937 After a precipitous drop from 1929 to 1932, the market seemed to be on recovery mode until it plateaued in early 1937. The Dow Jones closed at 194.4 March 10, 1937 to mark the end of the uptrend. The index then drifted lower for three months until bottoming June 14, 1937 at 165.51 for a 14.9% loss. It spent the next two months on a steady climb eventually topping at 189.34 August 16, 2.6% below the previous high. That was its last hurrah as the market plunged 49.1% to its 98.95 March 31, 1938 Dow Jones close.
1929 Much like the 2000 market, the Big Crash of '29 gave plenty of warning. After going sideways for the first half of the year, the market went through a 10.0% correction when it swanned from a 326.16 Dow Jones close May 6 to 293.42 May 27. Thereafter, it rose undaunted until reaching the market top close of 381.17 September 3, 1929. It drifted lower, slowly at first, but then gained momentum until reaching a low point Friday, October 4 with a 325.17 Dow Jones close - a 14.7% loss. It made a mad dash effort to recover the next week but was only able to manage a 352.86 close October 10. At 7.4% lower than the September high, this was the lowest percentage close to a previous high of any of the major bear markets. Then again, this was the granddaddy of all bears. Ten trading days later, on October 24, the index closed below 300. It dived Monday, October 28 and again the next day closing at 230.07. The market continued its plummet until eventually reaching bottom July 8, 1932 when the Dow Jones closed at 41.22 for a record 89.2% decline.
Conclusion
Historical data shows that every major bear market since 1923 always provided investors with a warning. After seemingly peaking, they went through a significant decline before rising again only to plummet thereafter. In two instances, 2000 and 1929, it gave two warnings; the first a correction months before peaking, and the second after peaking.
Declines after the initial peak ranged from 14.9% to 4.3% with an average of 10.8% and a median of 11.6%. In three out of the nine cases, 2007, 1973 and 1946, the second peak was lower than the first. The range was from a loss of 7.4% to a gain of 2.9% with an average of -1.4% median of -1.7%. Taking out the 1929, 7.4% outlier, the average was -0.63% and the median -1.6%. The time between the two peaks ranged from 30 days to 5.4 months with an average of 96.7 days and a median of 93 days.
Starting from the premise we are in the beginning stages of a major bear market, and having gone through a 10% correction, what is in store for us? Surveying the data, it turns out we are average. There seemed to be no relationship between the severity of the bear market and the time lapse between the two peaks. However, five out of the six times the market went through a bonafide correction, 10% or more, it took months, between 2.9 and 5.4 months, for the market to top and begin its downturn in earnest. The notable exception was the Crash of 1929, which only took 37 days between the first and seconds peaks. Although there was no consistent pattern for depth of the initial decline and the total decline, it is notable that the four largest initial drops led to declines of 49% or more - a level only achieved by the 1973 bear market after only a 4.3% decline. There is no discernible relationship between the initial decline and second peak level, nor the total decline and second peak level.
It could be that Morgan Stanley's prediction this Monday, that a slowdown may loom starting in the second quarter, may be correct. We have already gone above the -7.4% level from 1929, so it would seem this market does not correlate all that well to that one and the wait to the next decisive peak will be measured in months. Regardless, I would caution all to watch the market's advance very carefully. If the S&P 500 gets within 2.6% of the 2872.87 January 26 top, i.e. 2798, that is your signal to exit the stock market. No sense being greedy about the last 1 or 2 percent gains and risk losing much more.

Sensor Sweep: Classics, Steve Tompkins, Queen of the Black Coast, Gun Ghoul
Culture (Legends of Men): The primary professional association for classicists is the Society for Classical Studies. This was formerly called the American Philological Association. Mary Frances Williams, a Ph.D. in classics, former professor, and an independent researcher, decided to attend this year’s annual conference. There, she witnessed first hand how the classics field is becoming a vehicle for social justice (a.k.a. Marxism). The SCS, as well as academics across the country (and presumably across Europe), is accomplishing this on multiple fronts.
Fandom (Don Herron): Hard to believe it was ten years ago today when Steve Tompkins punched his ticket. Only 48 years old, hospitalized for food poisoning after hitting Burger King, then out of the blue a heart attack. If they can’t handle a heart attack when you’re already in the hospital, game over.
Fiction (John C. Wright): Many a fan, this one included, calls Queen of the Black Coast the finest of the Conan stories, in part because of its legendary scope, in part because of its lurid romance, it passages of lyrical poetry, its vivid and bloody battle-scenes, the sense of mystery and adventure, the chilling eldritch visions of ancient eons and shades of the dead, the Viking funeral at the end.
The writing excels on three levels: first, striking characterization gives life to an intimate and tragic romance; second, lyrical world-building conjures a vision of a lost age, cruel but not without its savage beauties; third, a deep and even grim theme dignifies what would otherwise be a mere boy’s adventure tale with adumbration of deep time and an almost Norse melancholy touching the brevity of life, the indifference of the gods.
Fandom (DMR Books): Steve Tompkins died ten years ago today. I and a few other bloggers will be posting blog entries in tribute to Steve, whom I consider the best “genre” blogger of the first decade in this twenty-first century. Below, you’ll find a very concise history of Mr. Tompkins’ life and hyperlinks to all of his blog entries and online essays. This post is intended to function as a one-stop guide to Steve’s online legacy.
RPG (Playing at the World): The Illusionist in Dungeons & Dragons was created by Peter Aronson, an early Boston-area fan. In 1975, Aronson submitted an initial description of Illusionists to TSR , who ran it in the fourth issue of the Strategic Review. Then the following year, Aronson’s additions with system for higher-level Illusionists appeared in the debut issue of The Dragon. But Aronson didn’t stop there – he made a number of further expansions and corrections which he circulated informally in 1977, of which the first page is shown above. Today, we’re looking at the complete Illusionist subclass for OD&D as Aronson envisioned it, and the implications it created for “schools” of magic in role-playing games.
Fiction (DMR Books): Hira Singh was Talbot Mundy’s fourth novel; his second and third novels (The Winds of the World and King – of the Khyber Rifles) are more properly part of the Greater Jimgrim Mythos of interconnected stories and we will discuss them in their own time.  We will also be reviewing the Jimgrim Saga itself (those books whose hero is James Grim) in its own place.  Hira Singh was serialized in Adventure magazine in late 1917 and then published in book form by Bobbs-Merrill in 1918.
Popular Culture (Kairos): Hang out around science fiction authors long enough, and you get the sense that they’re all crazy.
John Scalzi claims that Donald Trump and the weather conspired to give him writer’s block. Patrick Rothfuss and George R. R. Martin have cited similarly temperamental reasons for not finishing their popular series.
The ancient Romans had a saying, Ars longa, vita brevis. Moderns take it to mean that life is short, but works of art last.
Popular Culture (Men of the West): This weekend, Captain Marvel defied expectations among traditional fanbase comic book audiences who expected the movie to gross between $80 and $100 million. It seemed as though every indication was there that the movie would tank, due to its blatant promotion of third wave feminism—both in the movie as well as in promotional material. However, the justified critics were wrong to presume the larger society of Americans were on their side, and the movie earned $153 million domestic.
Authors (Fredericksburg.com): AS THE final weeks of the 20th century drew to a close, much attention was given to the question of what had been the best—the best of the century or best of the millennium? An endless flurry of polls, surveys, Top 10 and Top 100 lists were compiled.
And when it came to the best book or best author of the past 100 years, in poll after poll, survey after survey, list after list, J.R.R. Tolkien was nearly always at the top.
Comic Books (Jon Mollison): Back in December I took the Arkhaven Comics then new online book store for a test drive.  Wil Caligan’s Gun Ghoul showed up in plenty of time, but personal events made reading a comic centered on death and justice too painful.
Still, Wil’s a good guy who deserves support, so I cinched my belt tighter, sniffed and thumbed my nose like a good Mayberry Sherriff’s Deputy and shouldered my wife through a story of loss, revenge, and redemption.
RPG (Karavansara): The game in question is called Atlantis, the Second Age, that is a game with a complicated history – there’s at least three different editions that I am aware of: the first by Bard Games (when it was just called Atlantis), the second by Morrigan Press which is the one I own, and recently a new edition was released published by Kephera Publishing (I do not own it, but all reviews are glowing).
RPG (Tower of Zenopus): I’ve been interested in the Savage Worlds game since the earliest days of its existence – maybe before if we’re going back to Deadlands and the Great Rail Wars days. I played and ran some Deadlands in its original form, picking up pretty much all of the books and the Deadlands: Hell on Earth setting and books as well. I dove into GRW a little later and picked up a bunch of the miniatures and books for that too. I was on the Deadlands email list in the late 90’s/early 2000’s and followed the development of the system as bits came out there – you can see a more extensive version of that info here.
Fiction (George Kelly): I’ve been a big fan of Night Shade Books’s volumes in The Complete Stories of Jules de Grandin series. Black Moon, just published, is the fifth and final volume. Seabury Quinn created a psychic investigator whose cases usually involved weird, occult, and supernatural aspects. For four decades, Seabury Quinn wrote stories that attracted a devoted audience of readers. The stories in this collection bring together Jules de Grandin stories from the late Thirties, all of the Forties, and a couple stories from the Fifties.
Fiction (Too Much Horror Fiction): Pity poor Robert James Atchison. Living in a California town known as America’s preeminent burial ground, where the dead outnumber the living five thousand to one, he’s a sensitive 17-year-old boy with a fondness for poetry, instilled in him by his dear departed mother, and he actually enjoys reading books like The Iliad for school. He may have good hair, vibrant eyes, and fine features, but all that’s lost on his high school classmates: to them he’s a gangly, awkward-limbed, tongue-tied goof who they’ve nicknamed “Coma Man” with an embarrassing crush on Carla, the prettiest girl in school. He’s written Carla a poem and has two scarlet ribbons to give to her. What could go wrong?
Pulp (True Pulp Fiction): After having hardly any time for pulp reading for a while I finally got a chance to settle down with this issue of Adventure from from Howard V. Bloomfield’s editorial regime. Despite the cowboy on the cover the lead story is a Georges Surdez novelette, “A Head for the Game.” It’s a change of pace for Surdez in that his usual French Foreign Legion protagonists appear here as antagonists, picking a feud with a commander of Senegalese Tirailleurs.

I will be added onto my parents policy. I got a 3.0GPA 16 Year old male, still in high school I will probably get a late 90's compact or 1/2 ton pickup. Any ideas, I herd that it will be around $300 a month. I also have taken driving classes if that helps.""

How do doctors actually pay for liability insurance?
On studentdoc.com, the salary survey stated that the average OB/GYN made roughly $238000 a year, but some sites I have looked at show that they also pay $50000 a year (in florida, that rises to $100000) for malpractice insurance. Even for other practices, such as pediatrics and internal medicine, the rate is usually $30000+. This is a huge amount of money and really, after paying student loans, mortgages, taxes, and etc, how much money do doctors actually take home? Surely not all doctors actually pay for their premiums. Specifically, how much would a pediatric surgeon pay in malpractice insurance in California or Illinois? Just some food for thought.""

Cheapest car insurance I can get? (10 points)?
OK I know car insurance can depend on a bunch of diff factors. If I leave something out that may mean major money let me know and I'll do a quick edit. *I'm 17 *Senior in hs *A-B+ average *Had my DL for 3 months *Never been in a wreck *Never received a ticket *Took drivers ed *I have a part time job Again if there's something else I should mention just let me know. My insurance right now is $1000 every six months. It ends this month though, and I'm looking for a new insurance.""
How much will my insurance be?
I'm turning 16, and I intend to get a used passenger van for my first car (I'm in a band), and my parents are making me pay for my first 6 months of insurance (I believe you have to be 18 to have your own insurance so I guess they're making me pay the difference between whatever they usually pay and how much they'll pay after I'm on their policy. The van I'm looking at has 120,000 miles on it, if that matters, but only 70,000 on the rebuilt engine.""
How do I get affordable higher coverage health insurance?
I live in New York. I'm 22. I was on my college insurance plan, but I lost it when I went on medical leave. I had an extension plan, but that also expired. I have no job because I'm too sick to work. If I would go back to college before I got a job. Right now, I'm on a strictly emergency health care policy with no preventive care that runs me about $188 a month. I need more coverage though. The problem is that I'm not eligible for most plans because I don't work. For the coverage I need, it will cost over $1,500 a month. I can't afford that, I don't have income. What do I do? *Before my college plan expired, I was going to doctors. I am diagnosed with POTS, and I was having sleep studies where I was being treated for day time sleepiness. Never got an official diagnosis, but I probably have Idiopathic Hypersomina. Both of these require occasional tests and I will need to see doctors regularly until I have a treatment plan. I'm also a cancer survivor and need to go back in to get a battery of tests every year or so. Out of pocket, just a an office visit cost around several hundred dollars. (I have no lapse in coverage.)""

My wife is pregnant. Due date: 9/10/09. Our COBRA health insurance expires on 7/18/09. What to do?
Our insurance expires before the due date. NO PROBLEM. We're getting a HIPAA guarantee issue plan. Here's the question: Our insurance expires on the 18th, but HMO's don't start until the 1st of the month. This would leave a 2 week gap where we wouldn't have coverage. We can't start a HIPAA HMO on July 1, because you have to expire all 18months of COBRA before you're eligible for a HIPAA guarantee issue plan. Chances are it'd be ok waiting until 8/1 to begin our new HIPAA plan, but if my wife went into early labor, it would be a very, very bad situation. PPO's start on the 1st, and sometimes the 15th. Same problem. What should we do? We'd prefer to not have a gap in our coverage.""
How much would insurance cost?
I'm 19 and just passed got my driving license. I live in Yorkshire (I think that me living in Yorkshire reduces the cost of insurance a bit). Do I have to pay more for my car insurance?
I purchased a car with a car loan and I had to get full coverage insurance. I pay monthly and I have to do this for 6 months. The sixth month will be on May. How is the health insurance bill in the Senate going to lower costs?
Can someone explain to me how the bill going through the Senate right now does anything to control costs for the average family or person in the US? So far this is what I see: 1) If you have a good plan they are going to tax it - Raises costs 2) The insurance companies will have to cover everyone, even preexisting conditions - Raises costs 3) Cuts payouts to health providers for Medicare - Raises costs on others (they have to make it up) 4) Shifts costs to States for Medicaid - Raises state costs which raise state taxes 5) Cuts how much the Government pays for drugs - Raises cost when pharma makes up costs on private plans 6) Forces businesses to provide insurance for employees - Raises costs on all products Can anyone explain how this bill can lower costs for those who have insurance and keep them from rising? Does Wal-Mart have better and cheaper insurance than Obamacare?
http://www.examiner.com/article/washington-examiner-walmart-s-health-plans-are-better-than-obamacare On Jan. 7, 2013, The Washington Examiner released the results of an investigation finding Walmart's employee health insurance is significantly better than Obamacare. Walmart has come under mega union labor union criticism as a retailer whose employees are both underpaid and mistreated. Like many insurance plans which have been canceled as a result of Obamacare benefit regulations, Walmart's health insurance has been called substandard. However after an in-depth comparison, the watch dog team of the Washington Examiner discovered employees of Walmart receive a better bang for the buck than Obamacare. In comparison to Obama care, it was discovered that Walmart plans were a whopping five to nine times less expensive. Full-service individual coverage in a Walmart HRA plan is available through a Blue Cross Blue Shield preferred provider organization for as little as $40 a month while family coverage averages $160 a month.""

Should I put a claim in with my auto insurance?
Today at a light a car rear ended me. My rear bumper has some small scratches and some paint marks from the other car. No dents or anything else. the car that hit me seemed to have worse damage to his front bumper. We called the police and they did a report. The other guy said he is not going to put in a claim with his insurance. He admitted fault and apologized over and over. I was wondering if it is worth me putting in a claim with my insurance? I don't want my rates to go up and even though I am not at fault, i wonder how aggressively my insurance will pursue a claim with the other guy's insurance since damage is so minor. I actually wonder if it was worth calling the police, when I really think about it. I was just shaken up at the time. I think re painting the bumper would actually be less than my deductible. I don't really have any pain and no noticeable injuries. I had a friend say I should put in a claim for minor back pain, but even if i was in minor pain, i have heard the 10,000 most companies give always go to lawyers and chiropractors I don't want to lie and don't want to spend time going to chiropractors too end up not getting anything and still having to pay to repaint bumper, have my rates go up and be aggravated. any advice?""

My dad almost never has to go anywhere in his car as he is currently on disability. The only problem is insuring me on the e55 will cost a fortune. My dad currently has the car insured under State Farm and their quick estimate say's I'd be paying nearly $600 a month. Now, I know there are multiple discounts I can apply for, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm eligible for. Since this would be a shared policy as a part time driver, would it be significantly cheaper? However I got a call back a few hours later from another broker quoting me a lot less. I had her verify with the company and they said yes. But I have already signed the other stuff. What can I do about this insurance/car accident?
Recently, my husband was hit in my car while going through a green light. The girl didn't see him as he was going through and turned and hit him. Now we are fighting with her crappy insurance. They are trying to say we are 25% liable and they will only pay 75% to fix our car. They are trying to say my husband should have been more cautious going through the light. It was a green light! So, what, we are supposed to treat stoplights like stop signs now? How ridiculous. My question is, what can I do to get my car 100% paid for and do they even have the right to claim who is liable or not? Isn't that the cops job? My husband decided to be nice and not have the cop issue her a ticket. Was that a bad idea? I mean, she turned into him. How much more cautious could my husband have been? He hit his brakes but by that time it was too late. This insurance company is saying he should have tried harder to avoid the accident. What else could one possibly do!?""

Will affordable health act help or hurt people who want to retire early?
Say you are in your late 50's or early 60's and wants and have enough money to retire, but was waiting because of health insurance issues and was going to wait till 65. With the affordable care act most likely going to proceed, will this help those people who probably have pre-existing conditions and of course old get a better deal on health insurance if affordable care act was not passed? People who cant afford health insurance are quacks?
i see the merits of having universal health care, kind of, but it seems to me that the problem is a lot of middle class citizens who just decide nto to purchase health insurance on the premise that they cannot afford it , and instead opt to buy material goods that are solely for luxury. you cant go out and buy nice cars and houses and bypass health insurance and then cry it off that the government should give free care to everryone.......i definitely agree it should be cheaper for the poor etc. bottom line: ppl need to realize health is the most important thing in there life, and satisfy that need, before thinking about personal possesions (nice cars etc)""

Young people have significant health needs ranging from higher rates of risk taking behaviour, accidents, mental health problems through to alcohol and drug misuse and sexual health issues.
This is exacerbated by barriers to accessing health services, low income and frequent relocation.
Understanding the health needs of our youth
Key statistics
Hazardous drinking rates peak in the 18–24-year age group. One-third of 18–24-year olds (33%) are hazardous drinkers. (1)
There has been a dramatic increase in the global prevalence of obesity.
In 2012 New Zealand adults ranked third highest out of 15 OECD countries for measures of obesity and in 2010 New Zealand children (aged 5–17 years) ranked third highest out of 40 countries for overweight (including obesity). (2)

How to Optimise Your LinkedIn Profile in 20 Steps – Part 2
Updated for 2017/18
This is the second in a 2 part series on How to Optimise Your LinkedIn profile. It is specifically targeted at job seekers but these tips will help anyone wanting to make their profile really stand out. Click on each point for more details.
11. Use Status Updates to Stand Out!
12. Comment on Updates from Other People and Companies You Follow
13. Join Relevant Groups and Discussions
14. Get Involved in Volunteer Work and Causes
15. Be Specific About Your Education
16. Network and Connect Actively
17. Extend LinkedIn with Mobile Apps
18. Become a LinkedIn Power User
19. Showcase Your Achievements
20. Write a Summary of Your Career
Marketo.com found that up to 94% of recruiters use LinkedIn to find candidates but only 36% of job seekers are active on LinkedIn. This presents a huge opportunity if you use LinkedIn well and make sure your profile is up to date and well optimised.
If you’re in the market for an IT job, this article will help you stand out to recruiters.
11. Use Status Updates to Stand Out!
“To be considered a Valuable Resource, you have to Add Value.”
This is true of your LinkedIn status updates. If you add value to your LinkedIn profile by not only publishing posts but by providing commentary on relevant topics, your profile is far more likely to get noticed and then shared with other networks. To increase the number of people viewing your profile, you need to be seen to be someone who can add value to the viewer.
It’s not just about sharing your own writing and blog posts, consider sharing other people’s blog posts, articles, videos and anything else that you think might be useful. Adding your own commentary and insights will ensure that your content is unique and you are not simply plagiarising other people’s work. Curating interesting and useful content is currently considered one of the best ways to get noticed online. i-Scoop describe content curation as being “about aggregating/discovering/gathering relevant content and then sharing or presenting it to audiences in a targeted and optimized way.”
Jeff Bullas recommends you update your LinkedIn status daily with new and interesting information that is both original and curated.
Don’t forget to inform those people whose content you have used so they can also share your post among their networks. Most people love to know that their blog post or content was useful and has been shared. Make sure you give full credit and a link back to the original content.
  12. Comment on Updates from Other People and Companies You Follow
Make sure that you regularly comment, share and follow people and companies who offer relevant, valuable and useful information and content. By sharing their status updates you will add value to your own networks and gain friends and followers. People are far more likely to share your content if you reciprocate and share theirs.
This is called “building social equity” and is described by Juice Marketing as “sharing useful stuff in an unbiased way, whether it’s your own content or not – builds credibility and something I call “social equity.”
It’s very important to maintain the 80/20 ratio for sharing other people’s content to your own. It is important not to over promote yourself or you may find yourself losing followers.
Social Media Examiner has written a great article that demonstrates how and why this strategy is important. According to Social Media Examiner: “It’s all about becoming a valuable resource.  When you can dig up great articles your audience is interested in–regardless of the source–you’ll become more respected and your content will be widely shared”.
  13. Join Relevant Groups and Discussions
Jeff Haden describes LinkedIn groups as informal communities that are generally built around a profession, niche or industry. Joining groups and discussions on LinkedIn is a great way to develop new connections.
It is important to only join groups that are relevant to you and your career. Make sure the groups are going to increase your chances of better networking, connections or understanding of an industry. It is not worth wasting your time (or the group’s) on joining with people who aren’t interested in what you have to offer and vice versa.
A very simple guide that shows you how to search for and join relevant groups can be found here. According to Sirona Consulting, social media recruitment experts, it is worth joining as many relevant groups as possible. You can join up to 50 groups on LinkedIn at the moment.
Apart from the obvious networking advantages of joining groups, it can give you the opportunity to not only look for a job but to build and foster relationships with hiring managers and other HR executives. Because you can message anyone in your group for free, you can use a group as a great way to network and connect with people who could be very useful for your career.
14. Get Involved in Volunteer Work and Causes
LinkedIn gives space in your profile for any past or current volunteer work you may have done or are currently engaged in. According to a recent survey by LinkedIn, reported by Emily Co, about 41% of professionals consider a candidate’s volunteer work experience when interviewing for a job.
Forbes reports that LinkedIn released the findings of a survey conducted in the US with 2000 professionals and found that, while 89% had experience with volunteer work, only 45% put it on their resume. Considering the number of managers who do look at volunteer work, it is definitely worth including it in your LinkedIn resume.
LinkedIn also provides opportunities to volunteer your “time and talent” to serve on a non profit board of some other type of skills based work. You can also help in online industry based forums where people ask questions and seek the advice of an “expert”. By setting yourself up as an expert in a particular field, you will increase your chances of being found by potential employers and headhunters.
15. Be Specific About Your Education
There are a number of reasons to be very specific about your education in your LinkedIn profile.
Let prospective employers know your educational qualifications and attainments. It’s important to be completely honest and don’t embellish your achievements.
LinkedIn can find other connections from your past educational institutions. These people can often be excellent networking connections and may be happy to introduce or recommend you to other colleagues. It is not always easy to gain new connections on LinkedIn, if you have something from your past in common, you might find they can connect you to someone with the perfect job for you.
Forbes discusses why it is so important to stay completely honest when giving your educational background. As they say, you never know when your next interviewer might have gone to the school you’re not being completely honest about.
If you’re wondering how to add, edit or improve your educational profile settings, LinkedIn gives a clear outline of how to do this in just a few steps.
16. Network and Connect Actively
It’s not easy to make new connections on LinkedIn. However, it is recommended to aim to get the maximum published (500). There have been a lot of myths over the years about different features getting unlocked when a person hits 500 connections. This is not the case, the only thing that happens is that your publicly displayed number stops increasing. Hubspot debunks this and other myths about the network.
The best way to request a connection is to make a personalised request. Make sure you tell them who you are, how you know them (did you meet at a conference, meeting or are they a connection with someone you know?), why you are connecting with them (give them a reason to connect with you). Julie Yates discusses the Do’s and Don’ts of asking for new connections on LinkedIn in this article.
It is important to be careful to only try to connect with people you know or you can show some sort of connection with. While you are entitled to try to connect with people whose email address you don’t know, once you have had a number of people hit the “report spam” or “I don’t know this person” you can get put in the “LinkedIn jail house” as Social Media Examiner describes it. Once this happens you will be required to include your email address in every future contact and this can greatly reduce your ability to connect effectively in future.
If you craft a personalised message, do your homework and know a bit about the person and mention who and what you have in common, you should be fine.
Once you are connected, stay connected. Don’t neglect those connections you worked so hard to get. Tech Hive discusses why this is so important. Find out how to become a “super connector” in this Undercover Recruiter article.
17. Extend LinkedIn with Mobile Apps
Using LinkedIn’s mobile app allows you a lot more freedom to check posts, make connections and update status posts. As Matt Kapko points out, LinkedIn’s figures show that a candidate is 10% more likely to get a job if they apply on the first day it is advertised. Having the LinkedIn mobile app on your smartphone makes it much easier to stay in touch and respond quickly.
Advisor Tech Tips considers the most powerful feature of the LinkedIn mobile app is its calendar. If you are attending an industry meeting or conference, you can sync your “device calendar to incorporate rich LinkedIn profile data about each attendee”. As you can imagine, this can provide a wealth of information and useful content to help you make the most of your time and networking.
LinkedIn has now moved into a mobile based multi app approach and has put an enormous effort into making its platform mobile friendly. NextWeb reports that the mobile app is under continual development to make it even more user friendly and efficient.
Business Insider published an excellent article that discusses all the many ways you should be using the LinkedIn mobile app (but probably aren’t).
With more than 40% of users now accessing the network by mobile devices, if you haven’t downloaded their app, it might be time to think about it and learn how to use it to maximum advantage.
  18. Become a LinkedIn Power User
Jordan Sundberg of the Undercover Recruiter says that only 50.5% of LinkedIn users have complete profiles (as defined by the social media network). This means that by ensuring you have a complete and well filled out profile and you keep an updated status and news feed, you will be considered a “power user”. This will increase your chances of being noticed, contacted and endorsed.
By using all the “tips and tricks” available to you, your status as a “power user” will be increased.
Jason Martin gives a list of some of the best ways to become a “power user” in just one hour per week. He suggests taking advantage of some of the extra features on LinkedIn such as advanced search, groups, answers (to showcase your knowledge and give back to the community), events (find out about events in your area that you might be able to join), news and updates.
19. Showcase Your Achievements
LinkedIn also allows users to showcase their achievements. This is another great way to show future employers the awards, certifications and other accolades that you may have won over the years.
For a step by step outline of how to add or change your certifications, this article will guide you through.
The Muse gives some great tips for how to show off your accomplishments to make your LinkedIn profile stand out for potential employers.
Any certification is worth mentioning. Digital WPC considers that by providing all forms of accreditation and certification, you will not only show off your achievements but prospective employers can see how these might benefit their business. Consistently updating your profile as you achieve new accreditations keeps your profile fresh and relevant.
Another excellent way to showcase your achievements is to provide work samples. You can provide these in a range of formats, including PDF, image (jpeg, png), video etc. This is one of the best ways to show off your professional achievements. If you’re unsure how to add work samples to your profile, check out this PC World article that walks you through the process.
20. Write a Summary of Your Career
One of the most important parts of your profile is your summary. William Arruda, in his Forbes article, considers your LinkedIn summary to be the equivalent of a bio. He believes a bio to be the most important powerful personal branding tool you have. According to Arruda,“an effective LinkedIn summary makes people want to know more about you and ultimately connect with you one-on-one, so congruence is critical.” Make sure your online profile matches your real world self.
Your summary gives you the opportunity to show prospective employers what is important to you. If you don’t fill in your summary, the first part of your profile they will see is your experiences section. This does not provide a focus for recruiters or hiring managers. A summary will help point them in the right direction.
Careercast’s article, “5 Essential Tips for a Killer LInkedIn Summary” offers tips for making your summary stand out. By following these pointers, your summary will give employers the impression you want them to have.
Still not sure how to write an awesome summary? Check out these examples of great summaries to make your LinkedIn profile pop.

Ben Carson: could he be the answer to Republicans’ youth problem?
The retired neurosurgeons stimulating life history and non-politician status are key glean for millennials, facilitating see him Facebooks most followed candidate
The younger generation is tired of the typical politician, suggests 17 -year-old Megan Cox, explaining why she came to see Ben Carson with her mom, aunt and cousin in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
We interpret the stereotypical politician as more of exactly a figurehead, kind of bogus and so the fact that he is not a busines politician is a reaping point.
Like many who have come to see Carson speak at Wofford College, she says she was aware of, and motivated by, the mentality surgeons life story long before he embarked ranging for president. So far the seeming divergences in that story havent dissuaded them.
Millennials approximately defined as being born between the early 1980 s and early 2000 s make up its significant voting bloc. Its reckoned they will constitute a third of the vote in the 2016 election. Its the working group Republican ought to have struggling to allure. In 2012, 67% of 18- to 29 -year-olds voted for Barack Obama, compared with simply 30% for Mitt Romney.
Carson has so far proved to be something of a hit with this group, however. In May he topped a poll of those aged 18 -2 9, to be organized by Harvard Universitys Institute of Politics, as the most wonderful GOP candidate. In a September survey by Chegg, Carson was preceding his Republican competitives among college students.
Seeing Carson speak in person, at Woffords Benjamin Johnson arena in Spartanburg, it is not immediately obvious why he has such petition. Observers of the Republican dialogues will be accustomed to his toned-down accomplishments eyes half shut, spokesperson soft, pate bent but on theatre, talking to a gang of about 1,000 beings, he seems even lower-energy.
Ive been spending a lot of era boning up on material, Carson tells the audience, having only returned from a trip to Jordan. Carson toured refugee camps and met aid workers on site visits, in an attempt to bolster his foreign policy credentials.
Hes organized a move demonstrate for the students.
Syria, reads a entitle at the top of the first slither. There is a map of Syria and the countries encircling it. Syria is in red.
Population: 17 m, suggests a missile point.
There are pictures of Carson meeting dislodged Syrians. There is more room in the refugee camps, he responds. The US neednt accept anyone just yet.
Carson segues into something more like a stump communication, speeding slowly across the stage. He talks of the need to return to Judeo-Christian values. He talks about beings expecting him why he would enter politics after such a wonderful busines in medication. He utilises two handwriting gestures: embraced together, as if in devotion, and harboured apart, palms facing one another, like a serviceman describing the dimensions of the a fish he formerly caught.
More Facebook partisans than Bernie Sanders
A 2 December Quinnipiac ballot showed that Carson has fallen behind Trump, the two having been neck-and-neck since early November, and is tied with Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz for second place. Before he travelled to the Middle East he compared Syrian refugees to rabid hounds, which may not have helped.
But there are other indications of his notoriety. Carson has 4. 9 million adherents on Facebook. Thats more than Hillary Clinton and Trump. It is even more than Bernie Sanders, supposedly the millennial sweetheart.
Wofford hosted a GOP presidential conversation in 2011, and hosts the Hipp lecture series established by a former chairman of the South Carolina Republican party on national insurance. This is not a liberal campus, but still caters an interesting barometer of boy supporting. Talking to students it becomes clear that a big part of Carsons success is his life story. It was particularly helpful that many of them have contemplated this life story in school.
When I took anatomy last year we watched the Gifted Hands movie, does Cox.
I had no clue that he was interested in politics at all but the facts of the case that his life story, becoming a surgeon, and that he did inadequately in grade school and defeat that and went to Yale overcoming that is very important to me because it shows you a hard worker and he wasnt simply sided everything on a silver platter.
Isaiah Addison, a 21 -year-old Wofford student who is originally from Killeen, Texas, has an virtually identical fib.
Before he even was guiding Id looked at him as a role model, Addison says.
Hes actually one of the reasons why Im a neuroscience major right now here at Wofford. When I was in high school I actually watched the movie Gifted Hands and it genuinely transformed me on to wanting to know more about how the brain works.
Abbey Bedenbaugh is the chief representative for Ben Carsons campaign at Wofford. She didnt examine the movie Gifted Hands which stars Cuba Gooding Jr as Carson, and has a 7.8 -star rating on IMDB but read the book on which it was based.
Thats when I started to follow him and his employment, Bedenbaugh says.
His story, how he grew up. What he did to overcome obstacles in his childhood. How he merely continued to pursue what he adored no matter what obstacles he faced.
Bedenbaugh is 18 years old and is studying chemistry. She has only been campaigning for Carson for two weeks but has ever been signing up abundance of students. Like Cox, Addison, and many others, the tale of Carsons success is a big draw.
His popularity with boys is not lost on Carsons campaign. They have set up a Students for Carson program and are present on 3,900 college campuses.
As for reaching out to this demographic, our campaign believes it is incredibly important, enunciates Ying Ma, Carsons deputy communications director.
They aim to increase the number of sections to captivate more young people and get them campaigning on Carsons behalf.
As for his appeal: They visualize an authentic, accomplished individual who is willing to speak the truth and offering real solutions, Ma says.
Unconditional support
But Carsons back story the wayward boy who may or may not “ve been trying to” jabbed a sidekick before noting God and becoming a world-renowned intelligence surgeon has already become something of a millstone over the past weeks. Correspondents have been unable to find anyone to corroborate Carsons account of has become a teenage tearaway.
No one who knew a youthful Carson seems to remember him as a brutal child, let alone one who would attempt to attack his own mother with a hammer or stab a sidekick. Similarly, Carsons claims that he was offered a award to West Point armed establishment, and that he was deemed the most honest student in his class at Yale, have proved to be inaccurate.
You might expect that this would alienate those who were attracted by Carsons story and franknes. But the people I speak to seem prepared to give him a pass.
It does “i m feeling” heartbreaking but every person is a human, everyone moves missteps, Bedenbaugh tells. Not everyone is perfect all the time. Even Ben Carson.
In the Benjamin Johnson arena, Carson moves on to a question-and-answer discussion. His foreign policy boning up is evident, although he seems a bit over-eager to indicate it. At periods he sounds like a student hoping for additional points.
Asked about King Abdullah of Jordan, Carson describes him as a very honorable humanity. He pauses for a second before adding: he was a fighter captain. He talks about Russia and mentions the Baltic basin. And Im not talking about the Balkans, he illuminates, for no self-evident conclude other than to emphasize that he knows the difference between the two.
The event is brought to a shut. The predominantly young gathering have enjoyed the evening. Carson gets a standing ovation. Students snap photos as he ripples from the stage. “Theres” voluntaries outside, waiting to sign up new boosters. Evaluating by the response, they will probably do quite well.
The Carson campaign will be pleased. But as people begin to file out, there is a reminder that the electorate is also possible fickle.
At the extremely top of one of the realm sitting banks groupings of students are locked in exchange. I climb up and ask them why they substantiate Ben Carson.
Oh we dont, one says. We get extra ascribes for coming.
