Subtext occurs when the audience gets the feeling that there's a deeper meaning to a situation than what appears on the surface. Using subtext can allow us to explore abstract or emotional topics without preaching or being "on the nose." We can explore the abstract by focusing on the specific. One technique to make writing subtext easier is to make sure that your characters are physically doing something in your scene.
In his book The Secrets of Story, Matt Bird says, "If you love your characters, let them play basketball, dig a ditch, or try out a pastry class. They need something to do with their hands." Bird says that giving your characters something to do "gives you a way to accidentally express hidden emotions. You can simply have the characters say that they have mixed feelings, but it’s a much better solution to have your characters say one thing and then betray a different emotion through their actions. The more objects you put in their hands, the easier it is to do that."
Let's look at an example. In S02E03 of Outlander, Jamie and the French Minister of Finance are looking at horses to purchase. The conversation shifts between the horses and the more important topic of whether the Minister will finance the Jacobite rebellion in order to install a new King to the Throne of England. The Minister starts the conversation:
"It may be some small consolation for you to know that your dinner party was not entirely wasted. It allowed me to take the measure of your Prince."
"What was your assessment?"
"My considered opinion? He's an utter ass."
"I'm sorry to hear yer opinion of the Prince is such."
"I imagine you are, especially since you seem to have pledged yourself to his service."
[Speaking of the horses] "They claim they're three-year-olds, but this one's seen a fair few seasons more."
"Your knowledge astounds me. But I wonder how someone that such a good judge of horse flesh is such a poor judge of men."
"I see the Prince for what he is, but his father is the true king."
"Nobly said."
"Now here's a fine stallion, well put together."
"Magnificent. My word! But I must see a few more. I'm a man who cherishes--options. Don't you?"
Notice that the Minister ends the scene with subtext. He's ostensibly talking about the horses but he's actually talking about Jamie's options and his pledge to serve the Prince. The activity at hand becomes a metaphor for the deeper topic.
This technique is particularly applicable when dramatic opponents are talking (i.e. when two characters who have opposing goals are talking). Remember, also, that lovers are opponents in a romance. The scene can apparently be about the activity or event at hand but it might actually be about their love.

Kevin Cage of @spotlightsaga reviews... Outlander (S02E03) Useful Occupations and Deceptions Airdate: April 23, 2016 @outlander-starz Ratings: 1.212 Million :: 0.28 18-49 Demo Share Score: 7/10 TVTime/FB/Twitter/Tumblr/Path/Pin: @SpotlightSaga **********SPOILERS BELOW********** Here we are, digging back up an old episode of STARZ' romantic, sometimes incredibly violent, cross-genre, period drama 'Outlander'. S3 begins September 10th of 2017, and with as many projects as Spotlight Saga is taking on, that date is definitely going to come faster than anyone of us, or anyone else for that matter, realizes. 'Outlander' is a series that I think that many people don't know how to take at first, its unarguably a series that takes a few episodes to hook the viewer into submission... But once it does, watch out, this isn't an easy one to put down by any means. Just recently, a friend of mine started the series and was vocal about it not being what they thought it would be. 'Stick with it,' I replied with a quickness that even shocked myself. It's just that I'm so sure that this is a top notch series, one that deserves more attention than it even gets, and that people will take to it, if they just give it the proper time to develop. I have absolutely no qualms in standing behind it and giving it a big 'Roger Ebert/Gene Siskel' throwback 'two-thumbs up'. Normally for these series that have already aired, we already have articles ready to go, just waiting to be pushed out at the right time. This isn't the case with 'Outlander', so it's exciting to go back and watch, catching back up with the series and giving my reactions with a different point of view. I pilfered through online reviews of this very episode and almost all of them were positive, and while all the signature 'Outlander' marks are there, it's not exactly the most engaging episode, as many critics and bloggers would have you believe. Not taking anything away from the episode; We have plenty going on here... Jamie (Sam Heughan) is trying & failing to prevent a Jacobite invasion that time itself will most likely see happen away, a pregnant Claire (Caitriona Balfe) takes up a hobby helping at a local hospital that Jamie isn't too happy about, Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) is screwing the help around the household... Their maid, Suzette (Adrienne-Marie Zitt), which Claire is not exactly happy about, and Jamie hires a young hustler who pickpockets drunks in brothels, Fergus (Romann Berrux), and enlists him to intercept the communications and letters of Prince Charles (Andrew Gower). The biggest revelation in 'Useful Occupations and Deceptions' is Claire's discovery that Mary Hawkins, an English woman who believes that only oversexed Frenchmen put their 'things' in between their wives' legs (obviously sex-ed wasn't a priority back in the day and England has come a long way in terms of talking about and embracing their sexual nature), is actually a direct descendent of Claire's future husband. This is particularly troubling because that means that not only is Jack Randall still alive, he must remain alive so that Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies, who plays both Jack & Frank) can exist in the future - though, I'm not exactly 100% sure why. This also means that Murtagh & Claire must keep a secret from Jamie, who would undoubtably go off the deep end and rush to end the life of the notorious Black Jack Randall, who (by the way) gave television its most disturbing & realistic rape scene of all time at the end of 'Outlander's shocking S1. We can't blame Jamie for that animosity that lives within him (I'm still shaken up from all those villainous acts Jack perpetrated), but what I can't figure out is just why this is so important to Claire. Of course, Claire loves Frank, that was her first love, per se, but that life is centuries away... And at what cost, and how many more horrific atrocities will be committed just so that Fran, a man whose true nature is still very much in question in my eyes, can live. 'Outlander' always looks and feels tremendous... The music, the cinematography, the brilliant film & sound editing, award winning costumes, sound mixing, color grading, and all around slick, glossy production. The series literally takes you back into the time period that Claire has fallen into, you're living it with her. However, 'Useful Occupations and Deceptions' hasn't quite arrived at the point where the audience is trapped in the show's enthralling clutches, unable to look away or reach for that next episode without hesitation. Mind you, it's coming, with 'Outlander' it's a sure fire bet that its just a matter of time before no other show matters and all you can do is live, eat, and breathe the Highlander, gone French multi-genre madness!
