Story Time

So, Michelangelo here. I’ve been encouraged by Leonardo to tell y’all this story, here goes.

It all started spring 2017. I was in an intermediate sculpture class. Over the course of the semester, I had submitted for this class a hallway-long puppet theater installation, and a gigantic upholstered tree stump chair which is still currently living in the children’s wing of the campus library.

Now we were planning for finals. This project was slated for installation outside, and we were on the hunt for just the right location. I knew immediately when I saw it that the creek running through the middle of Upper campus was the perfect spot for me.

I decided I was gonna plant an entire village of fairy houses along both sides of the bank.

Surprisingly, my professor was all on board with this idea (seriously by now she’s just kinda given up and lets me do whatever art I want to for the assignments), and I decided that in order to make these fairy houses REALLY stand out I was gonna use entirely biodegradable materials for the whole thing. Keep it Eco-friendly and all that. 

The creek empties out into a big ole’ river further on, so I reasoned that I should probably gather most of the materials from the riverbank, as they would wind up back there anyway if something happened to wash the fairy homes downstream. I made my way to the riverbank and began my search.

The first few minutes of combing for driftwood was not altogether fruitful. I found enough pieces that I needed to make a driftwood carrying bag out of the roll of neon-green duct tape I had with me (long story), but that was about it. I was just making my way back to the art building when I saw it: the most beautiful chunk of snapped-off tree limb I’d ever seen. Or at least, that I’d been paying attention to. 

It was about six or eight feet long, and wedged in pretty good. I took my first haul back to the art room and returned to dig it out and bring it back. Once I had the thing dug out of the sand and weeds where it had lain since the last flood of the riverbank, I proceeded to hoist it up and carry it towards the art building. Only when I reached the doors did I realize:

I was going to have to haul what amounted to a small tree through the hallways of the art, music, and theater building.

No worries! The peeps who hang there have seen everything by now, and I do mean everything. I’ve been keeping a list of the top ten oddities, but there’s surely more that I missed. Anyhows. I got the log back to the sculpture room without incident. It smelled a bit like lake, so I stuck it in the sink and began to scrub. And that was how my professor walked in and found me scrubbing a fishy smelling log in the sink with water and sand flying everywhere.

So. Anyhow.

I scrubbed that log up nice and shiny and took it next door into the wood shop to saw into little strips of lumber to use to build my fairy houses.

This process went pretty well, and the houses were coming along fine, but I ran out of wood fairly quickly, so I headed back to the river bank to find some more driftwood logs.

And did I ever.

There, half buried underneath sand and wet leaves, was the nicest bit of treetrunk I could hope to find. Best of all, it was only about 8-10 feet long, so I could still carry it by myself.

This was not a good idea.

I managed to hoist the log up on one shoulder, and wobbling like a drunken apple I proceeded to make my way up from the river bank and back towards the art building. Miraculously, I made it to the front doors without injuring anyone, although I nearly clotheslined a bicycle. 

Then, disaster struck. In my excitement, I had failed to realize that I would not be able to open the doors to enter the building, as I was proceeded by about five feet of tree. Fortunately for me, a passing student kindly helped me push the handicap access door buttons so I and the waterlogged tree corpse could enter the hallowed halls of creativity that is the art, music, and theater building. 

I made it past the student lobby and down the hall towards the art wing without incident. This time, the log was too big for the sink scrub, so I had to hack it into sections with the chop saw before I could wash it off. So my professor has also caught me scrubbing firewood in the sink also. Not much fazes her anymore.

This time, I had a pile of mini sawed lumber more than enough to build my houses. Happy endings, yay!

The fairy houses were installed along the creek bank, just beside the footpath. The best part was watching people stop and look at them. Made me happy. Here’s a few pics of the finished houses, both before and after installation.
