The Retreat Pt. II
Part 2: The Morning After
It picks up quickly from now on, so get ready...
The first light of dawn filtered gently through the curtains, casting a soft glow in the room and rousing Monique from a fitful and restless sleep. For a long moment, she lay still, feeling disoriented and confused, as fragments of the night before came flooding back into her consciousness. The shadowy figure she had glimpsed at the window, coupled with the eerie, unsettling silence that had pervaded the room, seemed almost like a bad dream in the gentle, reassuring light of the morning. She took a deep breath, trying to shake off the lingering sense of unease, and attempted to piece together the events that had transpired. The calm of the new day felt at odds with the haunting images that replayed in her mind, making her question the reality of what she had experienced.
Monique rubbed her eyes, sitting up slowly. Was it real, or was it just her imagination playing tricks on her? She glanced at the window, half-expecting to see some evidence of the night’s disturbance, but everything looked normal. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted up from downstairs. Ashleigh, ever the early riser, was already up and about. Monique stretched, feeling the muscle tension from a night of restless sleep. She debated mentioning what she’d seen to Ashleigh as she went downstairs.
Would she think I was overreacting? Or worse, would she insist we leave, cutting short the retreat we both need?
“Morning, sleepyhead,” Ashleigh chirped, far too chipper for this hour. She was already dressed in her hiking gear, her dark hair in a neat ponytail.
“Ready for our morning hike?”
Monique yawned, reaching for the mug of coffee Ashleigh offered. “Give me a few minutes to wake up and change.”
Monique studied her friend’s face as she sipped her coffee, looking for any sign that Ashleigh might have experienced something similar during the night. But Ashleigh seemed utterly at ease, chattering about the trail she’d picked out for their morning hike.
“Are you okay, Mo?” Ashleigh asked, noticing Monique’s distraction.
“You look as if you didn’t sleep well.”
“I’m fine. Just took a while to get used to the new surroundings, I guess.” Monique hesitated, then forced a smile.
Ashleigh nodded sympathetically. “I get it. The first night in a new place can be tough,”
“But hey, that’s what our morning hike is for—fresh air and exercise to shake off the cobwebs!”
As they prepared for their hike, Monique glanced out the windows more often than necessary, scanning the treeline for any sign of movement. The forest looked peaceful in the morning light, with rays of sunshine piercing through the canopy and casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. Birds chirped, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves. Despite the serene setting, she couldn’t shake the unease that had settled over her. It was as if an invisible weight pressed down on her shoulders, making her hyper-aware of every sound and movement. She kept telling herself it was just nerves, but the feeling persisted, gnawing at the edges of her mind.
They set out on the trail, the cool morning air invigorating after the stuffiness of the cabin. The sun was beginning to rise, casting a gentle glow over the landscape and making the dewdrops on the leaves glisten like tiny jewels. Ashleigh led the way, confidently consulting the trail map she’d downloaded to her phone. She paused occasionally to check their progress and ensure they followed the correct path, her keen eyes scanning the surroundings for any landmarks mentioned on the map. The surrounding forest was alive with the chirping of birds and the rustling of small animals in the underbrush, adding to the sense of adventure that filled the air.
“Isn’t it great to be out in nature like this?” Ashleigh said, breathing deeply. “No traffic, noise pollution, just us and the great outdoors.”
Monique nodded, trying to share her friend’s enthusiasm. But as they ventured deeper into the forest, she couldn’t help but feel like they were being watched. Every rustle in the underbrush, every snapping twig made her jump. The atmosphere grew heavier, and an uneasy silence fell between them. Monique’s eyes darted around, scanning the dense foliage for any sign of movement. The deeper they went, the more oppressive the forest seemed, its shadows lengthening and merging into a dark, impenetrable wall. She tried to shake off the feeling, telling herself it was just her imagination, but the sensation of being watched intensified. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she found it harder and harder to keep pace with Ashleigh, who seemed oblivious to the growing tension.
“Ash, do you feel that?” Monique finally asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Feel what?” Ashleigh replied, turning to look at her friend with a puzzled expression.
“Like… like we’re not alone out here,” Monique said, glancing nervously around them.
Ashleigh laughed, though it sounded forced. “It’s just the forest, Mo. It’s full of animals. You’re probably just hearing them.”
Monique nodded, trying to convince herself that Ashleigh was right. But as they continued, the feeling of being watched never left her, and every step deeper into the forest felt like a step closer to something unknown and terrifying.
About an hour into their hike, they paused to rest by a small stream. As Ashleigh refilled their water bottles, Monique’s gaze was drawn to something odd on the other side of the stream.
“Ash,” she said slowly, “what does that look like to you?”
Ashleigh followed her gaze, squinting. “Huh. It looks like… some structure. Maybe an old hunting blind or something?”
But Monique’s blood ran cold as she realized what she was seeing. It was a crude shelter, hastily constructed from branches and leaves, barely offering any protection against the elements. The structure seemed fragile, as if it could collapse at any moment. The branches were interwoven haphazardly, and the leaves used as a makeshift roof were already wilting, giving the shelter a neglected, almost sinister appearance. It was clear that whoever built it did so rushing, with little care for stability or safety.
Hanging from one of the nearby trees, swaying slightly in the breeze, was what looked disturbingly like a string of bones. The bones were bleached white, varying in size and shape, and rattled softly, creating an eerie sound that sent shivers down her spine. Some bones were small, possibly from animals, but others looked human, their shapes unmistakable. They were strung together with what appeared to be ligament or some other organic material, adding to the gruesome display. The sight was both dreadful and mystifying, raising more questions than answers.
Monique’s mind raced as she tried to process the scene before her. Who could have built this shelter, and why? The presence of the bones suggested something far more sinister than just a temporary refuge. She felt a knot of fear tighten in her stomach as she considered the possibility that whoever had constructed this shelter might still be lurking nearby, watching them. The thought sent a chill down her spine, making her hyper-aware of every sound and movement in the surrounding forest.
The forest, which had seemed so peaceful and inviting moments before, now felt oppressive and menacing. Every rustle of leaves and every twig snap seemed amplified, adding to her growing sense of unease. She glanced at Ashleigh, who was also staring at the shelter with wide eyes, her earlier enthusiasm replaced by a look of shock and fear. The transformation in Ashleigh’s demeanor mirrored Monique’s rising anxiety, confirming that the danger was real and immediate.
“Maybe we should head back,” Monique suggested, her voice trembling as she tried to keep her fear in check. The idea of staying longer in the shelter’s vicinity filled her with dread. She couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched, that unseen eyes were tracking their every move.
Ashleigh looked at her, concern evident in her eyes. “Mo, what’s going on? You’ve been on edge all morning,” she said, her voice a mix of worry and confusion. Her concern only heightened Monique’s sense of urgency, making her realize that she couldn’t keep her fears to herself any longer.
Monique took a deep breath, deciding it was time to come clean. “Last night, I… I thought I saw someone outside the cabin. A figure, looking in through the window,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. The admission made her feel vulnerable, but she knew it was necessary.
Ashleigh’s eyes widened in shock. “Why didn’t you say something earlier?” she asked, her voice rising slightly in alarm. The question hung in the air, adding to the tension between them.
“I wasn’t sure if it was real,” Monique said, her voice shaking. “I thought maybe I was just imagining things. But now, with that shelter…” She trailed off, unable to finish the thought. The unspoken words hung heavily between them, adding to the sense of impending danger.
Ashleigh glanced back at the crude structure, her earlier enthusiasm replaced by caution. “Okay, let’s head back. We’ll figure this out,” she said firmly, taking charge of the situation. Her decisiveness was a small comfort to Monique, who felt relieved to leave the sinister scene behind.
As they turned to retrace their steps, a twig snapped in the forest behind them. Both women froze, exchanging alarmed looks. Then, without a word, they began to hurry back down the trail; the peaceful morning hike suddenly transformed into a tense retreat. The urgency of their movements reflected their growing fear, turning their idyllic outing into a race against an unseen threat.
The forest that had seemed so welcoming now felt oppressive, its shadows deep and menacing. Monique was confident that somewhere in those shadows, someone—or something—was watching their every move. The sense of being hunted, of being prey in a predator’s domain, was overwhelming. Each step they took seemed to echo with the possibility of danger, heightening their sense of vulnerability.
Their idyllic retreat had taken an ominous turn, and Monique couldn’t shake the feeling that the actual test of their survival was only just beginning. The realization that they might not be alone, that they could be in real danger cast a dark shadow over the entire experience. The sense of foreboding was palpable, making every moment feel like a struggle against an invisible foe.
“Maybe we should head back,” Monique suggested, trying to keep her voice steady.
Ashleigh looked at her, concern evident in her eyes. “Mo, what’s going on? You’ve been on edge all morning.”
Monique took a deep breath, deciding it was time to come clean. “Last night, I… I thought I saw someone outside the cabin. A figure, looking in through the window.”
Ashleigh’s eyes widened. “Why didn’t you say something earlier?”
“I wasn’t sure if it was real,” Monique admitted. “I thought maybe I was just imagining things. But now, with that shelter…”
Ashleigh glanced back at the crude structure, her earlier enthusiasm replaced by caution. “Okay, let’s head back. We’ll figure this out.”

Their idyllic retreat had taken an ominous turn, and Monique couldn’t shake the feeling that the actual test of their survival was only just beginning.
After their unsettling hike, Monique and Ashleigh returned to the cabin, locking the door behind them. The peaceful morning had turned tense, and both women were on edge.
“Okay,” Ashleigh said, catching her breath. “Let’s think this through. We must call someone, maybe the local ranger station or the police.”
Monique nodded, already pulling out her phone. She frowned at the screen. “No service. You?”
Ashleigh checked her phone, shaking her head. “Nothing. I thought we’d at least have emergency coverage out here.”
They moved around the cabin, holding their phones up, searching for even a single signal bar. Just as they were about to give up, a shrill ring pierced the silence, making both women jump.
“What is that?” Ashleigh whispered, her eyes wide.
Monique scanned the room, gazing at an old rotary phone tucked in a corner. “A landline? I didn’t even notice that before.”
They exchanged a nervous glance before Monique slowly approached the phone. With a shaky hand, she picked up the receiver. “Hello?”
At first, there was only static. Then, faintly, she heard a voice. “Mo? Can you hear me?”
“Marcus?” Monique’s voice was a mix of relief and confusion. “How did you-”
The line crackled, cutting off her words. Marcus’s voice came through in broken fragments. “Mo… worried… everything okay? Trying to reach you…”
“Marcus, we need help. There’s someone-”
The call dropped abruptly, leaving Monique holding the silent receiver, her heart pounding.
“What did he say?” Ashleigh asked, her face pale.
“Not much. The connection was terrible. But he said he’s been trying to reach us and that he’s worried.”
Ashleigh frowned. “Worried? Why would he be worried? We’ve only been gone a day.”
Before Monique could respond, both of their phones suddenly buzzed. They exchanged startled glances before looking at their screens.
“I’ve got service!” Ashleigh exclaimed, her voice a mix of relief and confusion.
Monique nodded, seeing the signal bars on her phone. “Me too. And… numerous texts from Marcus?”
They huddled together on the couch, scrolling through the incoming messages:
Marcus [12:15 PM]: Mo, Ash, are you guys okay? I have been trying to reach you. Marcus [12:16 PM]: There’s something you need to see. Sending links. Marcus [12:17 PM]: [Link] “Three Hikers Vanish Without a Trace in the Blue Ridge Mountains” Marcus [12:17 PM]: [Link] “Missing Persons Cases Spike in Remote Mountain Area” Marcus [12:18 PM]: [Link] “Local Authorities Baffled by String of Disappearances” Marcus [12:19 PM]: Please tell me you’re not in that area??? I am trying to remember if Ash mentioned Blue Ridge or a blue fridge for the wedding gift registry. Call me.
Monique’s hands shook as she tapped on the first link. The article loaded slowly, but the headline was clear: “Three Hikers Vanish Without a Trace in the Blue Ridge Mountains.”
“Ash,” Monique whispered, her voice trembling.
“This is from last week. It’s in this exact area!”
Ashleigh leaned in, her face pale as she skimmed the article. “Oh my god. It says they were staying in a remote cabin. Mo, we need to-”
Her words were cut off as both their phones suddenly lost signal again, screens returning to “No Service.”
They stared at each other, the implications of what they’d just read sinking in. The peaceful retreat they’d imagined had just become a potential nightmare.
“We need to leave. Now,” Monique said, her voice firm despite her fear.
Ashleigh nodded, already standing up. “I’ll grab our bags. You check if the car-”
A loud crash from outside made them both jump. It sounded like breaking glass coming from the back of the cabin.
“What was that?” Ashleigh whispered, her eyes wide with fear.
Monique grabbed Ashleigh’s hand, her mind racing with possibilities, none good. The idyllic forest retreat had suddenly become a trap, and they were caught right in the middle of it.
Monique’s mind raced as she assessed their options. “We can’t go out the back,” she whispered urgently. “We can go out the front door. Stay low, stay quiet.”
Ashleigh nodded, her face pale but determined. They crouched low, moving silently towards the front of the cabin. Monique’s hand was on the doorknob when another crash echoed from the kitchen, followed by the sound of breaking glass.
They froze, exchanging terrified glances. Whoever was out there was inside now.
Monique pointed to a window near the door. Ashleigh understood immediately. They’d have to risk it.
With practiced silence born from years of sneaking out as teenagers, they eased the window open. Monique went first, landing softly on the porch. She turned to help Ashleigh, both straining their ears for any sound of approach.
As Ashleigh’s feet touched the porch, a floorboard creaked inside the cabin. Close. Too close.
They bolted, abandoning stealth for speed. The forest swallowed them, branches whipping at their faces as they ran. Behind them, angry shouts erupted from the cabin.
“The car,” Ashleigh gasped between breaths. “We need to circle back.”
Monique nodded, veering left. They’d put some distance between themselves and their pursuers, but heavy footsteps still crashed through the underbrush behind them.
As they neared the clearing where they’d parked, Monique spotted movement ahead. She grabbed Ashleigh, pulling her behind a large oak.
Two figures emerged from the trees, heading towards the cabin. Monique caught glimpses of unkempt beards and tattered clothing in the dappled forest light.
“There’s more of them,” she whispered to Ashleigh. “We can’t make it to the car.”
Ashleigh’s eyes darted around, then lit up. She pointed to a dense thicket nearby. “There. We can hide, wait them out.”
They crept towards the thicket, every snapping twig sounding like a gunshot in the tense silence. Just as they reached the edge of the dense foliage, a shout went up behind them.
“There! By the big oak!”
Monique shoved Ashleigh into the thicket. “Go! I’ll lead them off!”
Before Ashleigh could protest, Monique ran, deliberately making noise to draw attention. She heard pursuit behind her, but also Ashleigh’s muffled movement in the opposite direction. Good. At least one of them might make it.
Monique ducked and weaved through the trees, her lungs burning. She thought she might lose them when something heavy struck her from behind.
The world exploded into stars, then darkness.
When Monique came to, her head throbbed painfully, each pulse echoing through her skull like a drumbeat. She squinted against the dim light filtering through the cabin’s grimy windows, her vision swimming and blurring. As she tried to move, she felt the rough, coarse bite of ropes digging into her wrists and ankles, the fibers scraping her skin raw. The binding was tight, almost cutting off her circulation, and she could feel the numbness beginning to creep up her extremities.
The room spun unsteadily as she attempted to focus, her eyes darting around to make sense of her surroundings. The cabin’s wooden walls, which had seemed rustic and charming before, now felt like the walls of a prison, closing in on her. The air was thick with the scent of damp wood and mold, mingling with a faint, metallic tang that she realized with a jolt was blood.
Panic surged through her, making her heart race and her breath come in shallow, rapid gasps. She strained against her bonds, the ropes biting more deeply into her flesh with every futile effort. The coarse texture scraped her skin raw, adding to the sting of her growing desperation. She could hear her heartbeat pounding in her ears, a frantic rhythm that only heightened her sense of terror.
The cabin was eerily silent, the only sounds being the creaking of the old wooden floorboards and the distant rustling of leaves outside. The silence was oppressive, pressing down on her like a physical weight. She felt a bead of sweat trickle down her forehead, stinging her eyes as she fought to remain calm.
Monique’s mouth was dry, her throat parched and scratchy. She tried to swallow, but it felt like sandpaper against her raw throat. She licked her cracked lips, tasting the salty tang of her sweat. The air felt heavy, almost suffocating, and every breath she took seemed to catch in her chest.
She glanced around the room, her eyes darting to the shadows lurking in the corners. Every shifting shadow seemed malevolent as if hiding some unseen threat. The dim light cast eerie patterns on the walls, making the room even more claustrophobic. She strained her ears, listening for any sign of movement, any indication that she wasn’t alone. But the silence persisted, deepening her sense of isolation and fear.
A sudden, sharp pain in her head made her wince, and she realized that there was a sticky, wet sensation on the back of her scalp. She twisted her neck, trying to see without moving too much, and felt the rough texture of dried blood matting her hair. The coppery smell of it made her stomach churn.
Desperation clawed at her as she tried to recall what had happened. The last thing she remembered was running through the forest, her ragged breathing, and the thudding of footsteps behind her. She had tried to lead their pursuers away from Ashleigh, but then… nothing. Darkness. And now, this.
Her mind raced with questions and fears. Where was Ashleigh? Had she managed to escape? Or was she somewhere nearby, facing a similar fate? The uncertainty gnawed at her, adding to her rising panic.
Monique took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. She had to think and find a way out of this. She couldn’t let fear paralyze her. As she scanned the room again, she saw a glint of metal on a nearby table. A knife. It was just unreachable, tantalizingly close, yet frustratingly distant.
She shifted, testing her bonds, and felt a sharp pain in her wrists as the ropes began to cut deeper. She bit her lip, suppressing a cry of pain, and forced herself to focus. She had to stay calm and find a way to reach that knife. It was her only hope.
Summoning every ounce of strength and determination, Monique began to inch towards the table, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Each movement sent jolts of pain through her body, but she gritted her teeth and pushed on. She could sense the rough wood of the floor rubbing against her skin, intensifying her agony, yet she remained determined to persevere.
The knife gleamed in the dim light, a beacon of hope in the oppressive gloom. Monique’s fingers reached for it, trembling. Just a little closer. She could do this. She had to do this.
As her fingers brushed against the cold metal, a surge of relief and determination washed over her. She gripped the knife, her hands shaking, and began seeing through the ropes. The process was slow and agonizing, each stroke of the blade sending fresh waves of pain through her raw skin. But she didn’t stop, didn’t let herself think about the pain. She focused on the task, fueled by the desperate need to survive.
Finally, with a final, determined cut, the ropes gave way. Monique gasped in relief, her hands trembling as she freed herself. She rubbed her wrists, trying to restore some feeling to her numb fingers, and glanced around the room, her mind racing with plans and possibilities. She had to find Ashleigh and get out of this nightmare. And she had to do it fast before their captors realized she was free.
With a newfound sense of determination, Monique stood up, her legs unsteady but her resolve unwavering. She was bruised, battered, and terrified, but she was not defeated—not yet. She was going to find a way out of this—for herself and for her sister.
The cabin seemed to close in on her, the shadows deepening as she took her tentative steps toward the door. The oppressive silence pressed down on her, but she pushed it aside, focusing on the task. She would survive this—she had to—and nothing would stop her.
“Ash?” she said in a low voice.
Now springing up with whatever adrenaline she had left, she had left, “Ashleigh?! Are you here!?”
No answer. The cabin remained silent except for the creak of aging wood.
Monique's heart sank deeper and deeper as her vision got clearer. Her shoulders were pressed heavily by the weight of solitude in the room. There was no sign of Ashleigh anywhere; she was utterly alone. Ashleigh’s absence hit her like a tidal wave and left her feeling lost and abandoned, a feeling she thought she’d never have to experience in her lifetime twice.

OX has once again blessed us with a lovely new piece, which means it’s time to gush about it! Many interesting details to note here, so let’s hit them up:
• I’d gladly live in a reality where Mo Guan Shan is an actual cat-boy, but upon closer inspection, he’s wearing a headband (and tail). • Mo is also only wearing one earring for some reason, a very curious detail. • Matching shirts, nice~! • Mo’s posing, unembarrassed, aha. Just like in the beach illustration; he seems to like the peace sign. • Someone mentioned they might be holding hands, but considering their arm lengths/angle I think it’s more likely that Mo’s holding his drink out of the shot. It looks like He Tian might be opening the door with that pose, but that would be strange to me, considering that doors open inwards, not outwards, and behind them is a window that faces the outdoors or the parking area. • He Tian’s not pulling back on that glare, I see, pfft. • I’m thinking they must be standing in the hallway (possibly of a hotel or business place); I haven’t seen any patterned carpeting in any of the housing complexes featured so far (not in the present or future; not for Jian Yi, Zhan Zheng Xi, He Tian, or Mo Guan Shan’s). Most of the characters have halls with concrete floors and wood floors for the interior. The walls and style of the window also look modern and business-like. • Interesting detail of some bikes parked outside behind them. • They drink a lot of boba tea, don’t they? But that’s the norm.

Lunar New Year Festival
Throughout the week, there was a noticeable buzz in the air of Central Park--not just of rumors and excitement, but of magic itself. One night, a large troupe of beautiful young women dressed in red and black hanfu gracefully flit throughout the large space carrying a variety of decorations and furnishings while a handful of others quickly and expertly cleaned the entire space of litter and rubbish. They carefully marked off the ice sculptures the Norse goddess had previously made; some were moved to other locations to be admired while others were highlighted in their own showcase. Snow sculptures crafted by residents were also carefully relocated to safe places with high visibility so they could continue to be enjoyed by everyone.
Another handful of ladies floated toward a small clearing, carrying several traditional instruments and began to play some lively tunes for the workers to enjoy as they continued to set up, some of the fairies even dancing and singing along as they placed decorations. These musicians would frequently be seen (and heard!) throughout the duration of the week-long festival as well, providing plenty of live entertainment for attendees--as well as accompaniment for professional dancers who performed a variety of dances. Several new sculptures were brought in--angled archways along the entrances to the park, decked with Spring couplets and Fu characters; several very large and expertly crafted dragons of exquisite detail--one dragon for each pantheon: Chinese, Norse, Japanese, Egyptian, Mayan, Greek, and Celtic dragons all--and despite translucent and frozen, the fierce beasts appeared as though they could come to life at any moment to breath a snow storm into existence.
Quickly, the area continued to be decked with banners and signs of crimson paper, adorning messages in a variety of languages, written in bold characters illuminated by magical golden ink shimmering phrases alternating between Happy New Year--2024--Year of the Dragon and variations thereof. Enchanted string lights of crimson and clear in the shapes of hanging lanterns joined in the decor; each lantern's glow also enchanted to provide warmth to the space so those in attendance could enjoy the outdoor festivities comfortably while the park was bathed in the light of a perpetual sunrise regardless of time of day.
Despite the ice and snow still present, one could easily find many blossoming peach, plum, and sakura trees as well as a variety of peony arrangements and even some strategically-placed potted kumquat and tangerine trees with small signs tied around their base for patrons to help themselves to their fruits as it seemed that no matter how many one picked, they always seemed to grow right back! And the fruits themselves were juicy and delicious!
The pleasant smells of flowers and citrus blended even more with the delicious aromas from the various food stalls that would be open from lunch until midnight. Festival goers could partake in an assortment of street foods from classic jiaozi dumplings, steamed bao (with a variety of fillings, with vegetarian options!) as well as special rou jia mo containing steamed catfish and vegetables for a surplus of good fortune in the new year, chuan’r and char siu, longevity noodles, candied hawthorn, popped lotus seeds, bakkwa, roasted peanuts and chestnuts as well as dried shrimp crisps for snacking, tangyuan, fried battered shrimp (for happiness and laughter!), niangao with special fillings ranging from lychee and longan (because how could one NOT have longan in the year of the dragon!?) to persimmon and kumquat, and much much more! And of course beverages were available at the Spilled Tea stall!
In the northern section of the park, a large tunnel had been erected--two large walls of ice with the "fu" character carved along the surface in intricate patterns. Along the top, however, rows upon rows of scarlet lanterns swayed for an enchanting and fantastical display; certainly a beautiful fixture--some may interpret it as magical and inspiring, some may see it as delightfully romantic. Nearby, another long wall stood beside a stall containing red many "fu" talismans; the young woman at this stall would gladly explain to those curious about how to make wishes and prayers on these cards and hang them on the wall to bring about good fortune for the year ahead. This same young woman happily provided guests with enamel pins in the shape of dragons from their respective pantheons. This nice and helpful young lady was also happy to provide attendees with pamphlets containing a map of the different vendors as well as schedules regarding specific performances and activities.
In the southern area of the park, many pillars of varying heights had been set up, wrapped with red and gold ribbons and adorned with more insignia plaques in preparation of the lion's dance to be performed each evening at sundown. In fact, at other times of the day, one might even catch a glimpse of the dancers wandering around in costume--2 lions!--wordlessly and playfully interacting with festival goers (especially children) and obliging selfie-takers. Many vendors could be found dotted throughout the park--a pleasant blend of traditional preparations heightened by magic. One vendor carved custom stone stencils for stamps of varying sizes--from personalized letter signatures to others the size of plates, demonstrating how to use them for those interested in watching that traditional printing style. Another vendor created malt candies in a variety of shapes and characters ranging from dragons to the "fu" character to moons and stars and so much more, much to the delight of children who enjoyed watching him create edible art.
Other activities included a variety of games located near the pavilion that had been erected in the center of the park--a beautiful and majestic structure of ice, trees, and flowers, adorned further with magnificent paper lanterns that swung gently with a light breeze. Of course, this was where the musicians and dancers performed at varying times of day regardless of the size of their audience. If one looked close enough at these lanterns, however, they would find small cards attached to them with riddles to solve--like a scavenger hunt leading them to another lantern hidden somewhere in the park--a fun little game thought of by the owner of Galaxy Games, wherein each lantern at the starter pavilion had a different set of clues and thus, a different adventure each time, ultimately leading to a variety of prizes--some were silly plushies and candies or vouchers for meals or services at different businesses throughout the island, some may find red envelopes containing money, others might find Felix Durant himself at the end who would provide them with a lucky charm granting them optimal good fortune in whatever they did for the next eight hours.
There was, of course, the classics--the arrow toss, archery contests, live portraits, constructing paper lanterns, using silk cords to make braided cords or other intricate designs, an elderly man telling stories with shadow puppets, and a few fellows wandered about performing fantastical tricks with Chinese yo-yos.
Another activity was the "Dragon Battle" on the west end of the park--which was really just a fun snowball fight for all ages, a battle that never seemed to formally end, surrounding a massive space filled with 'forts' made of ice and snow.
The classic dragon dance took place each night at 8:00 sharp and one could follow the illuminated beast's and its dancers' course throughout the entire park as it chased after the glowing golden orb.
Of course, this would all culminate on the evening of February 10th with a magnificent fireworks display brightening the sky with flurries of color and enchanted images including pixius, qilins, each creature in the zodiac (especially the dragon!), a variety of flowers including lotus blossoms, peonies, chrysanthemums, peach blossoms, and so much more all set to energetic music by live musicians.

Stephen's abusive wife:  Stephen, who was fired as Judy's guitarist after her brothers discovered their affair, is trying to tell his wife Kristy that he was "laid off," not fired.  She doesn't buy it.  It's a highly abusive relationship: she calls him "an unemployed, cokehead piece of shit who sulks all day."  He screams "Fuck you!", and she hits him with a glass blender.  Shattered glass all over his face and head, in front of the kids!  Whoa, scary. The Gemstones and their partners argue, but they never use abusive language or physical violence.  Except for the time that Amber shot Jesse in the butt.
Later, Judy meets Stephen at Spanky's Cafe, a real restaurant in North Charleston, and offers him $10,000 to leave her alone: "I don't want to see you no' mo'."  But he still wants her.  Judy points out that he's married, but it doesn't matter: "I'd leave my family in a second if I could have you.  I'd murder them." Say what?  This guy is a psycho. Of course, he should leave his abusive wife, but murder her...and the kids?
Kelvin's Butt Buddies:  Jesse and Amber's adult son Gideon, who moved to California to become a stuntman, is back, lying on the veranda in a bathrobe, smoking a cigarette, holding a box of Lucky Charms cereal, and sulking.  The background song by Buddy Knox tells us: "I think I'm going to kill myself."  He injured his neck, and may never do stunt work, tumbling, or martial arts again.  At least he's displaying a nice chest.
In a much, much nicer parallel to the Stephen-Mandy confrontation, Gideon's parents order him to stop feeling sorry for himself, get off his butt, and go to work for the church.  But he doesn't want to preach.  Ok, so he can become Eli's driver. Remember that the long-term driver, Walker, was fired.
We cut to Gideon on his first assignment, driving Eli and the siblings to see if May-May's kids are ok.  They are living with her estranged husband, Peter Montgomery, and his militia, the Brotherhood of Tomorrow's Fires: they expect end of civilization, like Eli's Y2K scare back in 1999.   Eli calles them preppers: "They want to make sure they don't run out of toilet paper."
On the way to the compound, at the defunct Boy Scout Camp Wooden Feather, the siblings discuss their cousins, Karl and Chuck.  Kelvin says that he always found them "kind of dumb and strange."  But you haven't seen them since 2000, when you were ten or eleven.  How much do you remember?
Judy: "That's why I'm surprised you weren't butt buddies with them."
He gets annoyed, not because she alludes to him being gay but because she implied that he's also "dumb and strange," and therefore perfect for the Montgomerys.
Not the God Squad:  Bizarre signs like "Now we will see" greet the family, along with multiple armed guards.  They pass Jacob (Stephen Louis Grush) cutting up a deer.  Kelvin smiles at him -- think he's hot, buddy?.  Then a military-style obstacle course;  guys practicing martial arts; a guy taking a shower outdoors (no beefcake); and finally the mess hall, where about thirty militia men are having lunch.
Wait -- no women and children?  The actual far-right militia movement has many female participants, but this is a male-only space, like Kelvin's God Squad in Season 2, but with scruffy guys in military fatigues instead of flexing musclemen.  It is dedicated to phileo instead of eros, buddy-bonding instead of homoerotic desire. An article on Doomsday Preppers notes that these male-only groups "cultivate a dangerous vision of apocalyptic manhood that consummates a fantasy of national virility in the demise of feminine society."  Women are weak and fragile, their civilization doomed. Only the "manly love of comrades" can survive the Apocalypse.
May-May's son Chuck ushers Eli and the siblings in. They are greeted by Cousin Karl (Robert Oberst), who is delighted to see them; and Uncle Peter (Steve Zahn, below), who is not.  It's time for church, so get out!  No, the siblings offer to help lead the service: Jesse will preach, Judy will sing, and Kelvin will  perform some "feats of strength" for the kids -- the only time he references his muscles during the season.  No kids around, but maybe the militia guys would like to see some masculine beauty.
Uncle Peter rejects the siblings' offer.  They are "phony fakers," entertainers, interested in making money rather than saving souls.
Tumblr media
Kelvin's Gay Friend: At the Salvation Center, Jesse, Kelvin, and designer Percy (Aaron Goldenberg) are going over the plans for the new executive boardroom. Percy has a gay-stereotyped name and occupation, so we can safely identify him as gay.
Background Alert: Aaron Goldenberg and Jake Jonez' video sketches, with the Mean Gays invading your dinner party, rejecting you as a hookup, and so on, have gone viral, with upwards of 35 million views across social media platforms.  In 2024, they "invaded" the Razzie Awards, giving them a national spotlight.
Back in the board room, Kelvin lays on the campy behavior and criticizes Judy's choice of color scheme,  becoming a hip-wiggling, eye-rolling, sassy Queer Eye for the Straight Guy host. He has been swishing like a Mean Gay all season, making sure that anyone who talks to him for a moment will figure "it" out.
When Martin comes in to tell them about a meeting with the Board of Ministers, Jesse orders Percy to "get the f* out," but Kelvin says goodbye nicely, while fiddling with his "wedding ring."   Why is Kelvin being nice to him?  In universe, he recognizes another gay person.  Structurally, we learn that Kelvin has gay friends.  He and Keefe are closeted, but not isolated: they are participating in the local LGBT community.
Gaslighting BJ:  The siblings visit Eli at his fishing cabin to reveal that the Board of Ministers is "disgruntled," unhappy with how they are running the church.  But Eli refuses help: he won't always be around, and they have to learn to work together to solve their problems.
Then Judy and BJ's Date Night: they leave the theater, discussing how cool it was to go to a movie and throw popcorn at people's heads.  "Lately we haven't been on the same page," Judy comments.  BJ doesn't know what she's talking about, so she digs herself in deeper, claiming that they were "on a break" when she was on tour.  Uh-oh, when you are on a break, you can see other people.
When he protests, she gaslights him, claiming that he said it.  Manipulative, but not nearly as crazy as last season's Judy.
Where's Keefe?  Judy/BJ and Kelvin/Keefe scenes almost always run parallel, so we should see the guys having marital problems immediately before or after Judy gaslights BJ.  But Keefe does not appear in this episode; we see Kelvin swishing it up in the board room instead.  This suggests that Kelvin's conflict is not with Keefe, but rather with his new position of authority.  It's one thing to be obviously gay while doing low prestige, nearly invisible jobs, and quite another to be gay while running the church.
Peter is Bat Shit Crazy:  Time for church in the militia compound. While the men sing "Power in the Blood." the feds raid!  Guys are being grabbed, assaulted, even shot and killed!   Cousins Karl and Chuck manage to escape, even though the guy in front of them is grabbed.
They  run to the "safe house":  a middle-aged women is sitting on a chair in the woods, making a sandwich while half-naked kids frolick. It is a surreal scene.  Who is she?  A militia man's wife?  A nature spirit?  The guardian of the underworld? She wordlessly points to a nearby cabin where ten or twelve militia guys have gathered, and we return to ordinary time.
Peter wants to know who alerted the feds -- the Gemstones?  And why did Karl and Chuck invite them in the first place?  Are they traitors?
"No, Mama invited the Gemstones.  We had nothing to do with it."
Peter doesn't believe them.  To get them to confess, he cuts part of Jacob's ear off!  Karl intervenes, and Peter orders his men to get him.  The Cousins run. Whoa, is he planning to disfigure his children?  This is even more toxic that Stephen-Kristy, like Kelvin's tyrannical rule of the God Squad times a thousand.
Cut to Gideon driving Eli to a cheap motel, where Chuck, Karl, and May-May are hiding.  Peter is gunning for them -- and for the Gemstones.  His goons are parked right outside. So you ask Eli to come to your hotel and get spotted by the goons? Good thinking, Sis.
The Shoe-Throwing Match: The Board of Ministers, representing every area of church administration, from finance to end-of-life services, want to know the siblings' plan for handling the declining membership.  They can't think of anything except an impromptu catch phrase, "We three and thee." You were notified of this meeting far in advance, plenty of time to think of a plan.  The meeting devolves into a shoe-throwing fight.  Kelvin continues to promote femme-gay behavior by wearing a glittery vest.
Meanwhile, Eli agrees to hide the Montgomery Boys in his mansion.  To escape Peter's goons,  Gideon has do some fancy stunt driving, crash a few cars, plow through a golf course, and slam on the brakes to make his assailants crash into each other -- just below a "were you injured at work?" ambulance-chaser billboard.  The end.
Work problems, marital problems, and now a militia gunning for them.  The siblings are spiraling!

LED display unit board: see the quality details from the appearance
As the main way of displaying digital information, the quality of the LED display unit board is directly related to the reliability and service life of the product. Although the LED display unit boards on the market are seriously homogeneous in terms of materials, by carefully observing the appearance, we can reveal some quality differences. The following are the key factors to evaluate the quality of LED display unit boards from the appearance:
Tumblr media
Layout and quantity of aluminum electrolytic capacitors used
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors in LED displays play an important role in eliminating voltage surges, so their layout and quantity are crucial. A high-quality LED display unit board should reasonably arrange aluminum electrolytic capacitors near the power socket and MOS tube, and ensure a sufficient number to minimize the damage to the LED display module caused by voltage surges. Take you 5 minutes to learn about LED display soft modules.
Use of voltage divider and resistor
The function of the voltage dividing resistor in the LED display unit board is to divide the voltage and disperse the heat, thereby reducing the thermal power consumption of the constant current driver chip and extending the life of the product. An excellent quality LED display unit board should be equipped with a voltage dividing resistor to ensure the stable operation of the constant current driver chip and the long-term reliability of the lamp. 4 common sense about LED display chips.
Component welding quality
The welding quality is directly related to the stability and reliability of the LED display unit board. By observing the tin content and gloss of the solder joints, the welding quality can be preliminarily judged. Adequate tin content and good gloss are important signs of welding quality, while dull solder joints may indicate poor welding or material quality issues.
Tumblr media
Product surface protection effect
The surface protection effect of the LED display unit board directly affects the reliability and service life of the product. Using conformal paint evenly sprayed on the circuit board surface can effectively prevent moisture, dust, oxidation, etc., and improve the reliability of electronic products. Especially for outdoor LED display products, good protection effect is even more important, which can effectively extend the service life of the product and reduce maintenance costs. The price of outdoor LED display is determined by ten aspects.
To sum up, the quality evaluation of LED display unit boards is not limited to the selection of materials, but also requires comprehensive consideration from aspects such as design and production technology. By observing details such as the layout of aluminum electrolytic capacitors, the use of voltage dividers and resistors, the welding quality of components and the surface protection effect of products, we can initially judge the quality of LED display unit boards and provide users with a reference for choosing high-quality products.

Income Properties Are Trending, But Is Landlord Life for You?
Tumblr media
If the thought of investing your money into brick and mortar—or perhaps some stylishly-painted siding—excites you, join the club.
Investing in real estate has long been one of Americans' favorite ways to grow their wealth. In fact, over 70% of single-family rental properties are currently owned by individual investors rather than corporations, according to Census data.1
Moreover, a decade's worth of Bankrate surveys has found that Americans often prefer real estate for long-term wealth building over other investments. According to Bankrate's latest survey, for example, Americans have historically embraced real estate, in part, because of the strong return on investment it can offer—especially to investors willing to stick with a property over time.2 It’s also a popular way to hedge against inflation since both rental income and property values tend to rise in tandem with overall prices.3
Now, as higher interest rates continue to push priced-out homebuyers to the sidelines, a new crop of “mom and pop” investors are eyeing the mushrooming rental market as a potential goldmine.4 Interest in buying a home to both live in and rent is also on the rise, especially amongst cash-strapped buyers looking to supplement their mortgage payments.5
But how do you know if you’re well-suited to take advantage of these real estate investment opportunities? Here are three signs that owning a rental property could be right for you.
YOU'RE A HOMEBUYER WHO WANTS HELP COVERING THE MORTGAGE
If you're looking for a creative way to buy a home without overspending, “house hacking” could be the answer. Increasingly popular with first-time homebuyers and budget-conscious investors, house hacking simply means buying a home that you intend to live in while renting out a portion of it to one or more tenants.5
House hacking also tends to be easier to break into than traditional real estate investing since you don't need as high a credit score or as large a down payment to qualify for a mortgage. In fact, some government-backed mortgage programs will let you buy a primary residence with little to no money down.6 Buying a home you don't plan to live in, by contrast, may require you to put down as much as 15% to 25% to qualify for a loan.7
If you house hack, the money you collect for rent each month can help cover your mortgage and other homeownership expenses. Depending on your setup, you may also be able to save on utility bills by splitting them with your tenant or tacking a portion onto their monthly rent. Another major advantage of house hacking is that it entitles you to certain tax benefits and deductions available only to landlords.8
When it's time to start your search, we can help you find a property that's ideal for house hacking, such as a house with a walkout basement, a multifamily unit, or a home with enough outdoor space to build an accessory dwelling unit or garage apartment.
YOU'RE AN INVESTOR LOOKING FOR STEADY AND RELIABLE INCOME
If you’re not crazy about the idea of a live-in tenant but still desire an additional stream of income, a dedicated long-term rental property could be a better option for you. Besides the monthly proceeds, purchasing a rental home can also add diversity and long-term stability to your investment portfolio and help you build wealth over time.9
According to data from the Federal Reserve, real estate owners have historically prospered. In early 2020, for example, the median home was worth almost triple what it was 30 years prior. Then, during the pandemic-era real estate boom, average home prices grew at an especially frenzied clip, climbing by nearly 50%, on average, in just two and a half years.10
However, the rate of appreciation can be hard to predict, so it’s prudent to invest in a property that also offers positive cash flow, which means the rent you take in exceeds your expenses. This strategy helps to ensure that you’ll put money in your pocket each month, even if the property’s value takes time to grow.
While today’s higher mortgage rates can make it more challenging for landlords to turn a profit, investment opportunities aren’t reserved for cash buyers. In fact, currently, almost 60% of real estate investors take out a loan to finance their purchase, according to Thomas Malone, an economist at the real estate data firm CoreLogic.4  He also notes that more small investors are stepping in to meet demand for rental housing, which has grown since many would-be buyers remain priced out of the purchase market.4
If you want to explore opportunities for a residential rental property that's good for your wallet and attractive to renters, we can help. Reach out with questions or to schedule a free consultation.
YOU'RE AN EXPERIENCED INVESTOR LOOKING TO MAXIMIZE YOUR POTENTIAL RETURNS
Another increasingly popular way to draw income from an investment property is to convert it to a short-term vacation rental. But beware: This strategy can be riskier as some municipalities have tightened rental restrictions and others are suffering from market oversaturation.11,12
With that said, if you're an experienced investor who can afford to take on some uncertainty, then investing in a short-term rental could make sense for you.
If you find the right property, for example, you could earn significantly more renting it short-term on a platform like Airbnb than if you rented the home to a long-term tenant.11
The key is to keep it occupied as much as possible at a premium nightly rate. To do that, you’ll need some marketing savvy, hospitality skills, and business acumen. Of course, you can always hire a professional property manager, but you’ll need to factor the cost into your budget.
The vacation rental market enjoyed a boom during the pandemic, and some inexperienced investors are finding they bit off more than they can chew. As a result, there's an opportunity to snap up some of these properties, but you'll need some cash on hand and a willingness to learn the business.12
We can help you scout opportunities in our local market or, if you’re interested in investing in another area, we can refer you to an agent there for assistance.
BOTTOMLINE
Investing in real estate can be a great way to build your wealth long-term and earn some extra income. But to make the most of your investment, it pays to be strategic.
Call us for a consultation so we can discuss your goals and budget. We'll help you discover neighborhoods with the best income potential, point out the homes most suited to renting, and help you brainstorm the best investment strategy for you.
Before you take the plunge, make sure you can answer “YES” to these three questions:
Are you ready to be a landlord?
Owning a rental property can take a lot of time and energy. You're not just buying passive income, you're also building sweat equity since the time you spend maintaining, marketing, and managing your rental can add up quickly. So be prepared to do some soul-searching to ensure you’ll not only flourish as a landlord, but actually enjoy it.
If you want to invest in real estate but aren’t prepared to put in the day-to-day effort required, we can refer you to a property management service for help.
Can you afford to invest in real estate?
The last thing you want is to get over-extended with your new real estate venture. Besides the cost of purchasing the property, you’ll need to consider additional expenses, like property taxes, insurance, administrative costs, and maintenance and repairs. You will also need a cash reserve for unexpected issues or potential vacancies.
We can help you run the numbers to determine whether you can charge enough rent to offset your expenditures.
Have you found the right income property?
Even if you’ve got your finances in order and are emotionally ready to invest, your success as a landlord will also depend on the property you buy. The criteria for a good rental home and a good family home are often different, so it’s important to lean on professionals for advice.
We can help you find an ideal rental property, taking into account your budget, risk appetite, and investment goals. If you decide to invest in a different area, we'll connect you with an agent who's more plugged into that community. Reach out today to schedule a free consultation.

The Pretenders have announced a very special US headline tour, set to visit a series of intimate venues across the country beginning August 16 at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom and then continuing into early October. Limited tickets for all nine dates go on sale this Friday, July 21 at 10:00 am (local). For complete details, please see thepretenders.com.
The atypical headline run heralds the eagerly awaited arrival of the Pretenders’ forthcoming new studio album, Relentless, arriving via Rhino Records on Friday, September 15. Pre-orders – including digital download, baby pink vinyl, black vinyl, and CD – are available now.
Produced by multiple Grammy Award-nominee David Wrench (Courtney Barnett, David Byrne) at the famed Battery Studios in Willesden, Northwest London, Relentless marks the second consecutive full-length songwriting collaboration by founder Chrissie Hynde and Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne following 2020’s acclaimed Hate For Sale. The album – which marks the band’s return to Warner Music Group after more than two decades having first been signed to Sire Records in America by the legendary Seymour Stein – includes such recently released singles as “Let The Sun Come In“ and the beautiful closing track, “I Think About You Daily,” the latter featuring composer Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead, The Smile), who provides the string arrangement and conducted the 12 Ensemble for the recording. Hailed by Stereogum as a “grand…regretful ballad,” “I Think About You Daily” is joined by a deeply moving official video, streaming now on YouTube.
The Pretenders will further introduce Relentless by joining Guns N’ Roses as a special guest on their upcoming North American stadium tour. The dates get underway August 11 at Hershey, PA’s Hersheypark Stadium before making stops at such historic parks as East Rutherford, NJ’s MetLife Stadium (August 15), Pittsburgh, PA’s PNC Park at North Shore (August 18), Boston, MA’s Fenway Park (August 21), Chicago, IL’s Wrigley Field (August 24), Toronto, ON’s Rogers Centre (September 3), and St. Louis, MO’s Busch Stadium (September 9).
