"For generations, the people of Erakor village in the Pacific nation of Vanuatu would pass their time swimming in the local lagoon. Ken Andrew, a local chief, remembers diving in its depths when he was a child, chasing the fish that spawned in its turquoise waters.

That was decades ago. Now 52, Andrew has noticed a more pernicious entity invading the lagoon: plastic.

“The plastic would form a small island inside the lagoon, it was so thick,” Andrew says. “We used fishing nets to pull some of the trash out, but we didn’t know how to get rid of it all. We couldn’t conquer it, there was just too much.”

While residents were struggling to empty Vanuatu’s waters of plastic, the country’s politicians were considering another solution. Could they stop the waste directly at the source?

Small island nations like Vanuatu face a series of unique challenges when it comes to plastic pollution. Many rely on imported goods to sustain their populations, and receive tonnes of plastic packaging every day as a result. Ocean currents pull plastic waste from around the world into Pacific waters, which eventually end up on the shores of its islands.

Few Pacific island governments have adequate recycling or waste management facilities on their narrow strips of land, so rubbish is often burned or left to wash up in rivers or lagoons like the one in Erakor. It is estimated that Pacific countries generate 1kg of waste per person a day, 40% higher than the global average.

In an attempt to drastically limit the amount of waste generated in Vanuatu, in 2018 the government became one of the first in the world to outlaw the sale and distribution of certain single-use plastics – including a world-first ban on plastic straws.

In the six years since, the results have been impressive. Thin, plastic shopping bags are hardly ever seen, with most shoppers carrying reusable bags at their local market or grocery store. At festivals and outdoor events, food is more often served wrapped in banana leaves instead of polystyrene takeaway boxes. Now-banned items used to make up 35% of Vanuatu’s waste, but now make up less than 2%.

The plastic islands that once choked Erakor lagoon are also shrinking.

“Since they started the ban, you can see the lagoon has become cleaner,” says Andrew.

It is a massive victory for a small island nation made up of just over 300,000 people across 83 islands...

In 2020, a second phase of the policy added seven more items to the list of forbidden plastics, which now covers cutlery, single-use plates and artificial flowers.

“It’s quite difficult to enforce because of the very low capacity of the department of environment,” Regenvanu says. “So we try to work with the municipal authorities and customs and other people as well.”

Compromises had to be made, though. Fishers are still allowed to use plastic to wrap and transport their produce. Plastic bottles are also permitted, even though they often litter coastlines and rivers.

Secondary industries have now developed to provide sustainable alternatives to the banned items. On the island of Pentecost, communities have started replacing plastic planter pots with biodegradable ones made from native pandanus leaves. Mama’s Laef, a social enterprise that began selling fabric sanitary napkins before the ban, has since expanded its range to reusable nappies and bags.

“We came up with these ideas to reduce the amount of plastic in Vanuatu,” says the owner Jack Kalsrap. “We’re a small island state, so we know that pollution can really overwhelm us more than in other, bigger countries.” ...

Willy Sylverio, a coordinator of the Erakor Bridge Youth Association, is trying to find ways to recycle the litter his team regularly dredges up from the lagoon.

“The majority of the plastic waste now comes from noodle packaging or rice packaging, or biscuit packets,” Sylverio says. He hopes the plastic ban will one day include all packaging that covers imported goods. “Banning all plastic is a great idea, because it blocks the main road through which our environment is polluted.”

The Vanuatu government plans to expand the plastic ban to include disposable nappies, and says it will also introduce a plastic bottle deposit scheme this year to help recycle the remaining plastic waste in the country."

On the 74th Annual Hunger Games reaping day, District 12 gets another tribute taken in. That person is you, yet are you really ready?

I haven’t seen any peeta fics where the reader is a badass and where the reader doesn’t take the place of katniss so here you go ^_^

Reaping day started no differently. Trying to spend your possible last moments before getting your name picked to kill or be killed for the sake of their entertainment.

Walking through the hellhole called district 12 was nothing special. Perhaps you couldn't say anything because you had no one, wow what a way to put that. Yet, having no one means that you had nothing to lose, that is, if you were reaped.

You walked past the silence of people, making your way to your makeshift home. You had only started to properly live in it to avoid talking to anyone. Everyone can go die, you thought, but was it worth it?

Living until your twelve and putting your name into the raffle just to be picked off to die. District 12 has no chance of winning, but maybe you would be picked and get sent off to your misery.

You were always alone, your stoic persona led people away from you. Not that you minded, obviously, you wanted to avoid contact with anyone ever since the passing of your parents. Not bothering to pay attention to the outdoor distractions, you looked through a crappy drawer that contained a limited amount of clothing, yet it still worked its purpose. You took out the light blue dress and scoffed at its color.

Instead, you stripped from your original clothes, and put on the ‘pretty’ dress. The dress went to your knees, with a soft pattern of trills on the bottom of it. You kept your hair down, not bothering to put it up or make a good appearance. You knew you weren’t going to get picked, your name has been put in it for years.

After keeping your worn shoes, the reaping alarm was heard, telling the people of district 12 that it was time for the annual reaping day.

You only let out a small sigh and began to leave your makeshift house, looking at it one more time, before turning away and walking towards the reaping ceremony.

Walking in, the crowd is getting larger and larger, you being one of them. As you were walking, you noticed a girl around your age, 16, consoling a younger girl, most likely her first time. Shaking your head, you pushed past and got into the line. You stuck your hand out for them, pricking your finger and pushing the wound against the paper.

The machine read, before you turned and got into the separated groups. You felt bad for whoever was to be chosen, it puts a lot of pressure, you thought.

After everyone was finally registered, you stood in your place, watching as individuals dressed in smooth suits and fancy clothing walked out, taking their seats to enjoy the show. The tall microphone in the middle was empty, before a woman dressed in magenta and elegant clothing. She tapped the microphone before speaking, a smile on her face.

“Welcome, Welcome, Welcome.” Her bright voice rang out for all to hear. Her dark eyes scanned the crowds as she smiled.

“Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds ever be in your favor.” She gave a nod, which made you want to gag.

Having to hear her voice another year was extremely annoying, yet you thanked her for never pulling your name out.

“Now before we begin—“ she started, but you couldn't care less. You ignored the sound of her voice and watched the video appear on the screen with a blank look. The capitol could die, especially the president.

You couldn’t care who died, especially if it was the president. Maybe if he died, the hunger games would stop.

Only hearing the muffled voice of the president and you took your time to look around you, glaring at the peacekeepers that were located near you.

“—As usual, ladies first..” the woman said slowly, taking small steps towards the container that held your name in it and plenty of others. You only bothered to pay attention now, but you stared at her hand as she grabbed a piece of paper with someone's name on it.

She moved back to the microphone and opened the paper, opening her mouth to say the sacrificed lamb.

“Primrose Everdeen.”

You only stood there as you watched the young, blonde, and scared girl walk slowly and away from the people near her, the woman edging her to come onto the stage. You recognized her as the scared girl, how unfortunate that her first day she gets reaped.

You watched silently as the other girl, whom you saw comforting her prior to the reaping, stepped out and called her name.

That caused the peacekeepers to hold her back before the words came out of her mouth.

“I volunteer! I volunteer!” As she pushed the guards away from her and finally with a calm voice saying, “I volunteer as tribute.”

Your eyes widened at her actions, wondering how crazy she was for sacrificing her own life for a kid that would go through this again.

Apparently, this also shocked the woman on the stage as she urged the volunteer to come up instead.

When she finally arrived onto the stage, with a hint of hesitance, she now stood next to the woman.

“What's your name?” The colorful lady asked, looking at the first ever volunteer.

“Katniss Everdeen.” She said quickly.

You now know why she did that. She did it to save her sister. Was it really worth it? Then again, could you really say anything.

You drowned out their voices yet only stood to watch them. You noticed the people around you did that hand sign again. You brought your index, middle, and ring finger to your lips and held it up, along with everyone else. You brought your hand back down as you watched the white haired woman make her way to the boy’s selection container.

She put her hand in, again, and grabbed a paper. She made her way back to the microphone and opened the paper, saying the name loudly.

“Peeta Mellark.”

You turned your head to where everyone else was looking. The boy you saw made you pause. His face, mouth opened as the light in his eyes slowly disappeared hearing his name.

You could only watch with silent eyes as the boys around him moved away, giving him space to walk towards the stage. He made small steps and was finally on the stage.

“Before we.. conclude our tributes.” She paused for a second before smiling.

“There was an anonymous voting, and district 12 was chosen for having an extra tribute.” She smiled sweetly and looked at a peacekeeper and nodded.

Two peacekeepers brought a smaller bowl of names, and it was held in front of her while everyone looked at each other in fear.

“Twenty people were nominated to be the extra tribute, and will be determined right now.” She gave a nod and put her hand in, quickly grabbing one and opening it. The peacekeepers holding the container pulled away and stepped aside.

“(reader) (lastname).” Her voice broke you from your trance. Your eyes widen as you look at the woman in shock. She beckoned you onto the stage and you only stood frozen in your spot, watching as the girls around you only stared at you.

You finally began to move your feet, quickly moving onto the stage and standing next to the boy, Peeta, you think that was his name.

“Now, let’s give an applause for our 3 tributes, from district 12!”

She motioned for them to shake hands, and you only stood to the side, not wanting to interact with the two. They stare awkwardly at each other as the woman gives one last statement.

“Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor.” She smiled as she put her hands on the first two tributes shoulders and pulled them with her, you following behind quietly. The doors closing behind all of you.

No matter how many times you ask a variation of “Hwa, baby, where are we going?” He just looks over to you with a smirk before singing at you.

Soon enough you’re walking through trees off the path that led to where he parked. You would be worried if it wasn’t for his firm grip on your hand and confident steps through the endless green.

Soon, he emerges you two from the wall of trees to the spring hidden inside. You were in awe of its beauty but were confused why you were here. And how he knew it was here for that matter.

“My home” he muttered. You looked to him to see his wide starry eyes. The smile on his face was nothing short of fond. After a moment he led you to the edge of the clear blue water. This was the first time he let go of your hand as he slid his shoes off and kneeled by the water. “Beautiful.”

“Very” you smiled as you watched him.

He turned back to you, beaming. You joined him next to the water with your fond smile growing.

“I grew my aura here.”

“I thought you were from an island.”

“I am, all sirens are but some of us come to springs such as these to grow our auras. Away from the vastness and traffic of the sea. No cruise ships coming through here.” he laughs.

As you wonder what growing his aura was like he stands. A low hum starts in his chest. The tone sweet. He strips slowly, eyes now turned to the sea in the distance. He simply says, “Sometimes I miss being in the water.”, before he walks into the spring, scales appearing over parts of his body. Pale skin complimenting the iridescent purpley blues that spread across him. His humming starts again as he turns, biting his lip as he beckons you in. You strip, throwing your clothes beside his.

The moment you put a foot in your body buzzes. It scares you for moment but he’s at your side in a second. “Its alright darling. Its alright. Your body is getting on frequency with mine” He holds out his hand for yours. Immediately, you grab it, trusting him instinctively. With careful and cautious steps you let him gently guide you in fully. Seonghwa is careful to keep you in the shallow area, only letting water come up to right under your breasts. “Better?”

The buzzing has dulled to a hum where he touches you, all you can hear is his hum from before. It pulls a bit of fuzzy brain forward as you stare at your connected hands, nodding dumbly.

A soft hand on your chin turning your gaze towards him brings you out of it. “Hmm?”

“Yeah, much better. But what do you mean frequency? Wait why did you come here to grow your aura? Didn’t you-”

He smiles playfully. “Oh so want a full Siren lesson huh? Trying to be just like me again?”

You laugh pushing him back some as he had gotten closer with his teasing. As he leans back from your playful shove, something brushes your leg. You yelp moving back.

“Calm down.” He leans back more allowing you to see what it was. His tail. 

Of course, you knew he had one but you’d only seen it once. He doesn’t show it often, preferring to say bipedal most of the time. He has told you he goes off to swim with it sometimes. Often, you wonder if he’s self concious to let you see it much. Maybe even scared but here he is grinning happily with his tail splashing you.

He’s playful and filled with child like charm for a while. The carefree feeling of him in his ethereal glory as he laughs happily. As the sun, continues to move across the sky, it gets hidden behind curved trees over a particular part of the spring as if thick clouds were shielding the sun from shining. You look up to see the leaves and branches curling to make a thick umbrella. Its a little cooler now thanks to it. You turn back to see Seonghwa gone but you can still feel him. He’s so close you can feel his tail brush against you. The moment you feel his legs return you know he’s doing something. You move closer to land, sliding up on a curved rock coming up from the water. The slope of the side allowing you to sit while still mostly covered by water. He swims over, rising with each step until right before his lower half is freed from the water. He’s towering over you. “My little siren, do you know what a spring means to us?” He leans over with both palms on the rocks next to you. You shake your head slowly, head tilted back to look at him.

“This is where my sensual energy comes from. Where I sang for a beautiful partner. Amazing inside and out. Someone to sing my songs to. To swim with me. With legs to bury my face between. Nails to mark my back.” His dark eyes looked deeply into your own. “Bringing a partner here means something I can’t describe. But I can show you.”

He steps back. Pulling your leg to bring you back into the swimming part of the water.

“My influence here is stronger than anywhere else. Can you feel it?” You could. 

But then he begins to sing. 

You can feel it the moment it hits you. It moves through you like its flowing through your veins. Making your heart pump faster, your head feel like its floating, and arousal flood your senses. This isn’t the first time you’ve felt his influence but this was stronger, you've never felt this. You gripped his shoulder as this was an arousal so strong you felt yourself quiver.

You hold his shoulder tightly, the other hand holding onto the back of his neck to keep him near you. He wasn’t going anywhere but you were incapable of letting him too far. His hands roam your torso, lighting another fire of desire with every light touch. 

The moment he stops singing he kisses you finally, he pulls you impossibly closer, his length pressing between. 

Without a word, he pulls you down, sliding you down the rocks until you were both submerged. Though you struggled to open your eyes underwater, he held you close. When you finally managed you had another problem. You hadn’t taken a deep breath before he pulled you under. Before you could move back to the surface, he put is lips on yours. 

Relief rushed to your lungs. Not the distinct feeling of a deep breath of fresh air but relief all the same. Your water pressured eyes were open in shock. Not feeling like you were drowning, you finally closed them, feeling the sparks of arousal light again. When he pulled away you opened your eyes again. You could see him. The blurriness from the unnatural pressure was gone and you could see everything so clearly. It was as if a stage light was lit so everything under the surface was irrdescant. 

Then there was him. 

He glowed in the majesty of the water. Some of his scales were visible and shining like you’d never seen before.

Your eyes sparkled in awe. It was like nothing you had ever dreamed of. He smiled wide at your wonder, no hint of fear in your wide eyes. Something clicking for him in that moment. A confirmation of what he knew before coming here. You truly are the one.

He springs towards you, moving expertly in the water to capture your lips with his again. Moving up until he pierces the surface, he pushes you up again further onto the rock before he leans over you. You felt you may need time to adjust to the wonder he just showed you but the way his eyes level you with a look of want it almost leaves your mind. 

At a time with such high lust he's usually between your legs already with only his eyes visible but neither of you have to say anything as he kisses and slides in at the same time. Your head falls back in a silent scream. The intensity of the feeling is at a 10. He must know as he holds your cheek nodding as he continues to fill you. Every part of you was on fire, the only things keeping you grounded were the cool water and Seonghwa’s gentle hands. He lays his head on your shoulder making you realize his hips were touching the back of your thighs. His head dropped to your shoulder.
