Monk Breton Priory. Founded in about 1154 by a local landowner, Adam Fitzswaine, it was a daughter house of the rich Cluniac priory at Pontefract. In 1281, Monk Bretton seceded from the Cluniac Order and became a Benedictine house. Monk Bretton was closed in 1538. #monkbrettonpriory #monkbretton #barnsley #monastery #englishheritage #abbey #abbeyruins #englishheritagesites #medievalruins #visitengland #blogger #femaleblogger #outandaboutwithliz #canonphotography #canon5dmarkiv #southyorkshire https://www.instagram.com/p/CDpJCxxFz2S/?igshid=1gj662t2htj1e

I took a different path whilst out running and came across this. Headstone and railing. Charcoal made in the woods was used for smelting iron; white coal was for smelting lead. The headstone is dated 1786. The inscription reads: "In memory of George Yardley, Wood Collier. He was burnt to death in his Cabbin on this place Octr. 11th 1786. William Brookes, Salesman; David Glossop, Gamekeeper; Thos. Smith, Besom maker; Sampn. Brookshaw, Innkeeper." The monument is unusual in that it records not only the occupation of the deceased, but those of the subscribers to his memorial. #ecclesall #ecclesallwoods #charcoalindustry #woodland #monument #hiddenhistory #forgottonhistory #unusualhistory #sheffield #sheffieldhistory #headstone #headatones #unusualhistory #outandaboutwithliz (at Ecclesall Woods) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDYQa-EFwnn/?igshid=1aaik8yihndja

Something a little different. Whilst a lot of places are still closed, the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum has just re-opened. They have social distancing measures in place, a one way system and lots of hand sanitizing stations. Smaller museums will definitely have suffered from COVID so it’s nice to be able to support as many as possible. Lots to see here and very friendly volunteers. I’m not an expert on aircraft but here is a Hawker Hunter F51 E-424, Aermacchi MB 349A and I have no idea what the third one is, If you know, let me know in the comments 😊. #southyorkshireaircraftmuseum #southyorkshireairmuseum #doncaster #smallmuseum #smallmuseums #supportsmallmuseums #aircraft #aircraftmuseum✈️ #aircraftmuseum #aviationmuseum #hawkerhunter #airenthusiast #planegeek #museum #aeroplanes #rafhistory #militaryhistory #bloggersofinstagram #bloggingcommunity #outandaboutwithliz #aermacchi #militaryaircraft #canonphotography (at South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC1kTyolABe/?igshid=iv51ppjmw678

Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸. A castle in Rotherham, England? The castle was built as a hunting lodge for Thomas Howard, the 3rd Earl of Effingham in the late eighteenth century. The castle got its name from the 1773, Boston Tea Party. Thomas was serving in the Coldstream Guards (the oldest continuously serving regiment in the British Army) and supported protests by the colonists in the USA over taxation without representation. When Thomas's regiment was ordered to America on active service, he resigned rather than support something that he did not believe in. #rotherham #southyorkshire #history #britishhistory #england #historyofengland #americanconnection #bostonteaparty #unusualhistory #hiddenhistory #bostonpark #huntinglodges #oldbuildings #oldbuilding #publichistory #heritage #outandaboutwithliz #castle (at Boston Castle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCNnIrlFeqy/?igshid=1jgssfjbi5erm

Meersbrook Hall - Built in 1780 by Benjamin Roebuck. The property included a walled kitchen garden and house's estate extended to Meers Brook. The house was the home of the Ruskin Museum until 1950. John Ruskin originally set up his museum as the Museum of St George in 1871 at a small cottage in Walkley, but it was renamed and moved to Meersbrook House in 1890. The Ruskin collection can now be seen in Sheffield's Millennium Galleries. Although the area was still in Derbyshire, the councillors in Sheffield were already looking over the border for amenity facilities for their citizens. In January 1885, Sheffield City Council bought both the house and the land as a public park or pleasure ground. The house is now a Grade II listed building. Meersbrook Hall was used as council offices for several years until 2016, when it was taken over by the Heeley Trust in partnership with Friends of Meersbrook Hall. #meersbrook #meersbrookpark #sheffield #sheffieldhistory #sheffieldheritage #architecture #history #heritage #blogger #youtuber #outandaboutwithliz #england🇬🇧 #northernengland #publicpark #sheffieldparkgardens (at Meersbrook Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CITiHiYMFPm/?igshid=rxr4eq1kk93a

This was the only picture that I managed to take of Penmon without people or cars in the shot. Penmon’s history stretches back to the 6th century, when a monastery was established here by St Seiriol. The holy well (with reputed healing properties) that bears his name is thought to be associated with this period, though the ‘cell’ that houses it is a much later construction. The remains of the priory that stand today largely date from the 13th century, when it became part of the Augustinian order. Inside the church, which still serves the parish today, stands an impressive cross. Dating from the 10th century, its shaft is carved with intricate patterns of frets and plaits. #penmon #penmonpriory #anglesey #angleseyisland #heritage #welshheritage #welshhistory #history #heritage #ancienthistory #ancientarchitecture #ancientruins #derelict #ruins #femaleexplorer #outandaboutwithliz #femaleblogger #canonphotography #welshtourism #placestogo #placestosee https://www.instagram.com/p/CEyXvnzMfX4/?igshid=e6wbillsna0b

Llanlleiana porcelain works, Anglesey. Between Porth Wen and Cemaes Bay are the remains of Llanlleiana porcelain works. The works produced porcelain from deposits of china clay found on Dinas Gynfor nearby. The works consists of a main building and a remote chimney, this was to direct the noxious fumes away from the working areas. The works closed in 1920 after being damaged by fire. #llanlleiana #llanlleianaporcelainworks #anglesey #northwales #northwalestagram #northwalescoast #angleseycoastalpath #cemaes #industrialheritage #history #coast #welshcoast #beautifulscenery #beautifulscenery #angleseyisland #outandaboutwithliz #canonphotography #countryside #welshcountryside #bloggersofinstagram #amateurphotographer #femaletravelbloggers https://www.instagram.com/p/CEoL-dAsq4b/?igshid=1qzlzmm2au2rx

Another one from Anglesey. Parys Mountain was mined for copper ore in the early Bronze Age, as shown by sub-surface debris nearly 4,000 years old revealed during excavations in 2002. Since then access has been regained to the sealed underground workings of the Parys mine revealing further evidence for this ancient mining. Parys Mountain is thus one of the few sites in Britain where there is evidence for the prehistoric beginnings of the British metal mining industry. #parysmountain #anglesey #northwales #mining #amlwch #landscapephotography #amlwchcoppermine #coppermine #heritage #northwalestagram #northwales #angleseyisland #mininghistory #wales❤️ #heritagewalk #coppertrail #parysmountaincoppermine #outandaboutwithliz #historylovers #unusualplaces #obscuretourism (at Amlwch) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEle06OsU02/?igshid=e960pqjxtxfl

The Cistercian Abbey at Kirkstead was founded in 1139 by Hugh Brito (Hugh son of Eudo), lord of Tattershall. Cistercian monks and nuns were founded in 1098, and followed the rules of St Benedict (obedience, poverty and chastity). They are often referred to as the 'White Monks' because of the light coloured robes that they wore, as opposed to the Benedictines who wore black robes. In 1536, 17 of the monks were involved in the Lincolnshire Rising. A protest against Henry VIII's Dissolution of the monasteries. The abbot supported the insurgents and as a consequence, he and 3 monks were executed, and the abbey destroyed. #kirksteadabbey #lincolnshire #history #england #greatbritain #englishhistory #historyofbritain #outandaboutwithliz #canon5dmarkiv #bloggersofinstagram #ruins #ruin #abbey #cistercian #cistercianabbey #medieval #intersetingplace #offthebeatenpath #lincolnshirerising (at Kirkstead Abbey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCCEWQZF_0x/?igshid=xsqvc7g6yn3g

Skegness Pleasure Beach. I can’t find much history in the Pleasure Beach other than it was taken over by Bottons in 1965. The local gentry used to take their families to Skegness in the late 18th century, looking to benefit from the sea air. #skegness #seaside #skegnesspleasurebeach #sign #signs #signporn #signage #amusementarcade #themepark #britishseaside #seasidtown #englishseaside #signgeeks #skegvegas #eastcoast #eastcoastengland #outandaboutwithliz #blogger #canonphotography #canon5dmarkiv (at Skegness Pleasure Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB7xBpIFN5E/?igshid=87791eauc4yv

Barlings Abbey in Lincolnshire is the remains of a Premonstratensian Abbey. It was founded in around 1154 by a local landowner named Ralph de Haya, with the first canons coming from Newsham Abbey near Grimsby. After the Lincolnshire Rising of 1536, the abbot and 6 of the canons were executed. The Lincolnshire Rising was a protest against Henry VIII's Dissolution of the monasteries. At the time, Barlings was classed as one of the greater abbeys as it had an income of over £200 and was one of the wealthiest houses in Lincolnshire. The abbey was suppressed in 1537, lead was stripped from the roof and the Abbots books and other possessions were removed and sold. The abbey fell into ruin with much of the stonework being used to build local farm houses. #barlingsabbey #barlings #lincolnshire #history #heritage #englishhistory #britishhistory #abbey #abbeyruins #premonstratensianabbey #outandaboutwithliz #lincolnshirerising #derelictplaces #ancientruins (at Barlings Abbey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB6SVoClzOT/?igshid=1lnxenl440wfv
