#out here trying to be a competitor with other open-world role playing games

I'm thinking a lot of the problems with ME:A stem from the fact it's effectively the "B Team" that's never made a full game of this level and largely didn't have anything to do with the making of the original trilogy. The game is fun so far but riddled with issues. Like, fun can only get you so far. Fun Game =/= [necessarily] Good Game. Especially since we don't know if the writing is actually good all the way through/are hearing mixed things from reviewers about further ion the game, ya know?
I hear ya.
I’m confused as to why they didn’t narrow down their scope to accommodate. I can only hope theyve learned some kind of lesson. I’d kill to read the postmortem for Andromeda. I’m praying they reflect, recollect, and pull a redemption in the form of DA4.
But after all this I dunno how I feel about them as a company. Not because of the animation wonkyness, but because they were deliberately misleading about it. After the first footage of Sara grabbin that damn gun they avoided the question of whether that animation would be fixed. They just repeated how everything gets worked on til the end, they’ll keep polishing, they’ll keep refining, they’ll keep fine-tuning.
They knew that one weird-looking scene wasn't an isolated incident. They knew the whole game was like that. They kept folks oblivious, let them place those $60+ pre-orders, said what they wanted to hear, and stayed as silent as they could before the inevitable exposé.
Its all just public relations, its basic video game marketing, its hardly personal, but I’m still genuinely upset they pulled this nonsense. I feel so bad for folks who took the risk and pre-ordered before knowing exactly what they were purchasing. I hope we’re all pleasantly surprised by Andromeda and they get their money’s worth. I hope they have fun. :’ (

whatever you want us to be
florence pugh x actress!reader
summary: you’re an actress and florence pugh is one of your competitors. you’re both really good actors, but one tends to outact the other during auditions. this creates a small competition between the two of you. when you both get cast in a film where you both play a couple, your world turns upside down.
warnings: suggestive content
word count: 2.6k
after getting the call from your agent that you booked one of the lead roles, you screamed at the top of your lungs for about five minutes. you were so excited because this is your first time, finally getting a lead role. you would have gotten the chance to get the lead in other films, but the great florence pugh always beat you to it. well, you can’t lie, she’s a damn good actress. but now, you both have created this little competition between the both you.
your heart just about dropped out of your ass when you saw the Deadline announcement. florence pugh was playing your significant other. how fucking great.
-
it’s the first day of rehearsals and you made sure to get there just a bit early. you looked around, to check if any of your co-stars were there and you seemed to be in the clear. you decided to walk up to the director to create a more mutual relationship, but you stop in your tracks when you see a blonde next to the director.
of course.
you shake the feeling off and say hi to the director.
“oh y/n! you’re here early, you are just the person i was looking for,” the director says.
“oh, really?” you ask, surprised.
“yeah, um, have you had the chance to meet this wonderful young lady next to me?” the director asks.
you look at florence and force a smile. “yes, we have met a couple times,” you say nodding your head.
florence catches onto your attitude and glares at you. when the director turns to look at her, her mood shifts immediately and smiles at the director.
“well, i’m sensing some tension here, so why don’t we rehearse one of the scenes to shake some of that nervousness off?” the director insists.
nervousness? i think it’s more of annoyance.
you get to your spots and the director calls for action.
you were both rehearsing the scene where they both confess their love for each other for the first time. you manage to do well (or so you think) even if you cringed on the inside.
“CUT,” the director yells.
“okay, y/n, that was good but i’m gonna need more emotion from you. you have to feel your character’s feelings and get into their head. florence, you did a great job, but just make sure to look like you’re acknowledging what y/n’s character is saying, okay?” the director advises.
“yes, thank you,” you both said in unison. both of you side eyed each other, both feeling the disgust within yourselves.
“alright, let’s try it again,” the director says.
-
after many takes of rehearsal, you were finally able to take the rest of the day off. sure, you can say it was easy, but having to look at the face of your competition didn’t help your mood.
of course, florence is beautiful. you’ve never seen anyone quite like her. but you just can’t shake the fact that she was someone you had competition with.
-
filming finally began and its safe to say that you were doing well. you were hitting your lines and because of a little soul searching, you’ve only had to have a couple takes.
today, you were filming the big confession. it was that cliché confession under the rain and you were kind of excited for it. you and florence have both rehearsed this scene about a hundred times now, but you never rehearsed the kiss. yes, maybe that’s a bit unprofessional, but you’ve both had this unspoken thing of “we’ll just do it when we have to do it.” well, today was that day.
thinking to yourself, you were a great kisser. you’ve kissed many people in movies, so how can this one feel any different?
-
“ACTION!” the director yells.
“I LOVE YOU YOU IDIOT!” you say. “i’ve loved you since the day i met you! i can’t stop thinking about you, i lose sleep every night because i can’t get you out of my head!”
you walk towards florence, and grabs her hands. “i love you too.”
you both lean in and WOW. her lips were soft. she tasted like strawberry chapstick and you wanted more. you don’t know what overcame you, but the taste of her lips felt so good.
you could tell florence felt the same way too. she held onto you a little too tightly and moved her hand to the back of your neck. florence let her tongue slip in and you accepted.
before things got more heated, the director yelled “CUT!”
you and florence pulled away slowly, keeping eye contact.
“THAT. WAS. AMAZING!” the director exclaims. “you both did a phenomenal job!”
“thank you,” you both said in unison again. this time, you look at each other and smiled.
“alright, well, that’s a wrap for today! great job everyone. go home and the both of you, dry yourselves. i can’t have both my leads getting sick,” the director says.
-
you dried yourself off in your trailer and started to get yourself ready for bed, when you hear a knock on your door. you open it and you’re shocked to see who’s at your doorstep— florence.
“hey, what are you doing here?” you ask her.
“i just um, i couldn’t sleep. could i come in?” she asks.
“um,” you hesitate for a moment. why the hell does she wanna come in my trailer? is this some kind of game? “sure. come in.”
you reach your hand out to help florence up the steps. god her hands are so soft. y/n shut the fuck up. you’re not supposed to like her.
you smile at florence as she steps into your trailer. “welcome to my humble abode.”
“hm, well not exactly, looks exactly like mines,” she teases.
you roll your eyes, “so what do you want?” you ask, sounding kind of rude.
florence raises her eyebrows, “wow. um okay,” she takes a deep breath, “i’m just here to talk and i guess get to know each other, since we clearly have gotten off on the wrong foot,” she breathes out.
“um, what do you wanna talk about?” you ask, taking caution.
“just the basics. like, where you’re from, where’d you go to school, if you have a dog. anything really,” she says.
“um, i’m from a small town in the bay area, i moved down here in LA to follow my dreams of becoming an actor. i went to UCLA and took film. and i don’t have a dog because im always busy,” you answer her.
“okay,” she says, her bottom lip caught between her teeth.
“what about you?” you ask her.
“well, i grew up in oxford, got my first acting gig at 17, and now here i am. and i have a dog back home,” she says smiling.
there was silence for a minute. all you could hear was your breathing.
“okay, uh, i should get going now,” florence says, making way for your door.
your brain was somehow on autopilot because what came out of your mouth should have never been spoken into existence.
“you’re a great kisser by the way,” you say, instantly regretting opening your mouth.
the blonde stops walking and turns to look at you with an amused look on her face.
“what did you just say to me?” she asks, a mischievous smile forming on her face.
“i, uh, i didn’t- i didn’t say anything,” you say scratching your head.
“you know, you do that a lot when you lie,” she says, furrowing her brows.
“do what?” you ask.
“the uh- the head scratch thing you do when you’re lying,” she says, mimicking your head scratch.
“what? no i don’t.” you scratch your head.
florence chuckles. “see. you did it again!”
“whatever,” you say, rolling your eyes.
“i noticed it a lot when we were in rehearsal. i remember i’d ask you questions and there goes your hand scratching your head. it actually surprised me that there wasn’t blood gushing out of your head with the amount of times you’ve scratched it,” she says, giggling.
“ha ha, you’re hilarious. what else have you noticed?” you asked her, getting annoyed at this point.
“well,” she takes a couple steps closer to you. “i also noticed that you’re also a great kisser,” she says, her accent getting thicker, her face inches away from yours.
you feel yourself gasp as she moves closer to you. if you moved your face even a bit, your lips would be on hers.
“so, do you wanna prove it to me?” she says, her voice getting lower.
“prove what?” you ask, feeling the tension rising up.
“that you’re a great kisser,” she says in her husky voice.
you look at her eyes and it’s like they’re piercing through your soul. you noticed her gaze changed when she started leaning into you. you closed your eyes and leaned in, breaking the gap between the both of you.
her lips were on yours once again. it had felt like heaven was on earth. it was as if the world stopped and the both of you were the only ones moving. she had that strawberry chapstick taste and you were hungry for more.
deepening the kiss, you grab the back of her neck and wrap your hands around her waist. you pulled away to catch your breath and started heading towards your bed.
you laid florence on her back, and before anything could proceed, you ask her, “what does this make us?”
“anything you want us to be,” she says with a smirk on her face.
and with that, you proceed with your night.
clothes were taken off and thrown behind you. gasps and moans filled the air. dirty words were spoken, and her hands wrapped around your neck. that night, you realized that florence liked to be dominant.
-
you woke up the next morning, and felt a body next to you. you looked to your side and saw a blonde head resting on your chest, with her arms wrapped around your torso.
everything from last night started coming back. your eyes widened as you realized, i slept with my co-star.
you tried to pull away as slowly as you can, but as you moved her arm away, she woke up.
florence’s morning face so cute. her eyes and cheeks were puffier than normal and her lips were a bit swollen from last night. she looked up at you and smiled. she pulled herself up, to kiss you on the cheek.
“good morning, darling,” she says, her morning voice filling your ears.
“good morning,” you say, slightly confused.
you rubbed your eyes and placed your hand on your forehead. “oh my god we slept together. this is so unprofessional.”
“shhh, don’t worry sweetheart,” florence says, pressing her finger on your lips. “i don’t kiss and tell.”
“florence this is serious, we could lose our jobs,” you begin.
“what part of ‘i don’t kiss and tell’ do you understand?” she asks. “besides, i told you that we could be whatever you want us to be.”
you look at her, and raise a brow.
“and if you want us to be co-stars who sleep together, then that’s fine with me,” she says.
“i’m sorry, what?” you say, sitting up. your hide your face into your hands for a second, and turn to look at her. “do you, do you do this often? like with your co-stars? is this what you do?”
“i’m sorry, are you accusing me of.. wow y/n, i thought you were better than that,” florence says, getting off your bed.
“no, no, that’s not what i meant, i-“
“save it,” she interrupts you. “i’ll see you on set.”
florence picks up her clothes and puts them on and heads out of your trailer.
you put your hands on your face and sigh, falling back down on your bed.
-
it had been weeks since you and florence had spoken to each other. the only time you had really spoken was when you had to act together. other than that, florence didn’t really acknowledge your presence. you had tried to talk to her, and tried to apologize and explain yourself but she would always get away. you even tried texting her, and leave her voicemails. you were always left on read and your calls were never returned.
it was the last day on set and you made it your goal to finally talk to her and apologize.
“CUT! THAT IS OFFICIALLY A WRAP! CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE!” the director exclaims.
clapping was heard around the set. you and your fellow actors and crew had finally did it, the movie was finally finished and will start the editing process as soon as possible.
you were heading back to your trailer for your last night, before you had to leave in the morning. you opened the door to your trailer and says a vase of flowers. there was a card next to it that read, “congratulations on the wrap! i had great fun working with you.” of course, she’s just congratulating you to be nice. nothing personal.
“p.s. open your door. xx”
what?
you open your door, to your surprise, it’s florence. you were so happy to see her that without thinking, you pulled her into your trailer and hugged her tightly.
“god i thought you hated me,” you said on her shoulder.
she pulled away and pushed you back, and you felt your heart break. you spoke too soon.
she sighed and grabbed your hands. she kissed your knuckles and placed your hands on her face. she smiled at you. “i could never hate you.”
you felt yourself finally able to breathe. you leaned in, but she placed her finger on your lips, stopping you.
“i listened to your many voicemails and read your texts. i need some time to think and i’m ready to answer you. yes, i forgive you. and i agree, we should start over. i would love to go to a café and properly get to know each other. and yes, i’m going to be honest, i missed you too,” she answers.
you deeply breathed in and out and tried to process what florence had just said. once everything clicked, you smiled.
“can i please kiss you now?” you pleaded.
“yes,” she smiled.
you leaned in and kissed her, finally. not only have you missed her, but you missed her lips as well. even if you had kissed her during your scenes, this kiss was real. it wasn’t behind a camera. this was real life. it was your reality.
pulling away to catch your breath, you rest your forehead against hers.
“so, are we gonna talk about the elephant in the room?” you ask.
“what do you mean?” she says look at you.
“i mean, there’s clearly feelings involved here, are we gonna talk about that?”
“take me out on a date first and maybe we’ll have a chat about it,” she teases.
you roll your eyes.
“besides, i thought the sex explained it,” she says.
“well, maybe we should try again so that the feelings are more clear,” you wittily say.
she lightly slaps you on the arm and rolls her eyes. “let’s see how our date goes, and maybe i’ll show you how clear my feelings are.”
you smile again and felt butterflies in your stomach. this woman might just be it for you.
the end

Rivals
Summary: Y/n and Harry are both CEO’s of their parent’s companies since they inherited the businesses from them, they’ve been rivals since they were kids- now that they’re professional adults how will their rivalry affect them? 2.2k
-
It’s no secret that growing up with a workaholic parent is hard for a kid, but for Y/n it was amplified due to the fact both her parents owned one of the most famous fashion companies in the world. This meant during most of her childhood she relied on nannies, private drivers, maids and child minders to care for her in absence of her busy working parents.
Of course having absent parents gave her some perks during her teen years, the ability to throw ragers in the absurdly large mansion they’d bought for the three of them –(well, they were hardly in it so mainly just their daughter)- not having to worry about getting caught when she decided to bring people over to get a quick shag in and the plus of having no one to bother her during her angsty middle school years. Those things were nice, yet you really can’t replace the role of your parents with teenage hookups and parties.
If there’s one thing that she absolutely hated about her parents work, it would be their former business partners cunt of a son. Harry Styles. Y/n had been forced to be in the twats life since they were 10 and his father joined stocks in her parents company before investing fully and becoming business partners. For Y/n that meant being forced to be around their son whenever their parents were too busy crushing numbers or out on boozy business trips clogging their noses with high end coke and buying out their competitors.
Harry was always a good-looking boy, and that only made things worse because he was a total prick. He was arrogant, annoying and always got away with being the biggest pain in the ass y/n has ever experienced in her life. He was insanely competitive, cocky and always found a way to weasel into Y/n’s business just to push her buttons. One’s he knew how to push perfectly to make her want to pound his head off a blacktop.
It was almost as if when it came to Y/n he never matured past being a 12-year-old boy, and now he’s a 23 year old powerful business man who still can’t manage to leave her alone.
Y/n had inherited her parents’ company when they decided to retire, two years before the retirement her parents and Harrys father had severed their ties and he’d gone back to his independent company. And just y/n’s luck, the man passed his roll as CEO down to his son, making the two young adults’ owners of two of the most famous fashion and beauty companies to ever exist.
Make no mistake, Y/n was a strong, independent and ruthless business woman so Harry’s subsequent inheritance didn’t threaten her in a business sense it more so made her worried for her blood pressure since the man couldn’t help but come bother her every chance he got. It didn’t help his dad had a single remaining stock left in the shoe portion of their clothing company giving Harry the perfect excuse to come barging into Y/n’s office to get on her nerves. To Y/n Harrys like a cold sore that won’t go away, just keeps coming back every time you think you’ve gotten rid of it.
___
Today was a busy day for Y/n, she had a meeting with her team that worked closely with her managing profit, stock, inventory, sales and all that stuff. Her team was large, with a company with over two thousand distributors worldwide and thirty-five exclusive stores scattered around the globe that’s to be expected. All in all, Y/n was responsible for making sure all one hundred and fifty thousand employees were running a smooth ship and every participating party was doing what they needed to do. It was a stressful job no doubt, but she never backed down from the challenge.
The meetings were always her least favorite part of her job. All the paper work that had to be read, numbers calculated, sales charted and any complaints or incident reports all had to be verbalized and talked about in detail with documentation of all the important things said as well as much more. Today the meeting took a grueling four and a half hours and the day was far from over.
Once she got out of her meeting it was nearing noon, she had to push her lunch off to phone the companies attorneys because one worker was trying to do a fake insurance claim. The man faked a work accident failing to remember every warehouse and factory was littered with security cameras that caught him in the act, so she had to inform them of the situation so they could sort it out. After that she got sucked into looking at new designs her design team had come up with for the next season, explaining that Chanel and Gucci both wanted to work with them to carry a few exclusive items only for that season.
Finally, at half passed two she made it back to her office, sitting down in her desk chair while taking her hair out of the headache inducing ponytail it had been in since she got there at five that morning. She opened her laptop, planning to send off some emails while she put in her order for lunch to her assistant, getting as much done as she could in the little bit of private time she was able to snag.
A knock sounded at the door, she knew it was Morgan coming in with the food she ordered so she didn’t bother to look up from what she was doing very drawn in to the email she was currently formatting. Only her attention was quickly severed when his voice rang out instead of the one she expected.
“I believe you ordered the chop salad, diet coke and fruit for lunch misses Yln.”
That annoying, cocky voice. You can hear his shit eating grin and teasing eyes simply in his tone, you don’t even have to look up at the jerk.
A prolonged sigh blew out of her lips, a grunt of annoyance following as she looked up at him. He looked nice, as always, she added bitterly in her own mind. She hated the fact someone so goddamn irritating was so undeniably attractive. He wore a dark blue suit, white button up with a black tie and yellow accent pocket square. Yet his fashion and handsomeness seemed a bit overshadowed by his personality that had the same affect on the woman as nails on a chalkboard.
“Harry, to what do I owe the displeasure?” Y/n reached her arm across the desk to snatch the paper bag from his ring clad hands, a sarcastic disapproving finger was pointed at her yet she didn’t take his bait opting to give him the death stare instead.
“Sassy today are we?” The man rested himself on the small leather loveseat that was in her office, propping his head on a throw pillow and putting his feet on the armrest. “You act like you’re not happy to see me, I know yeh missed me.” Y/n rolled her eyes, digging her fork into the salad aggressively. “I don’t think anyone’s ever been happy to see you, and I’m certain no one has ever missed your presence either.”
Harry chuckled slightly, loving how easily he could annoy the girl. Over the past thirteen years he’s learned just how to get under her skin, and he enjoyed doing so.
“Bit feisty today aren’t yeh Y/n? playing hard to get I see.” The man folded his hands on top of his chest, completely relaxing into the comfortable furniture, making himself comfortable for the undetermined amount of time he’d be spending there irritating his childhood ‘friend’.
The difference between Harry and Y/n’s perspectives on their rather odd ‘relationship’, if you could really call it that is Harry never hated Y/n. In fact he was always quite fond of her, he enjoys her company even when he’s forcing it on her and using the shared time to annoy the ever loving shit out of her. He and the woman have always been competitive growing up. In sports, card games, classes, and now business and Y/n took things a lot more seriously then he did. she was always wound a bit tight, she gets it from her mother.
Harry and Y/n had an interesting past. They have a love-hate relationship, seeing as even through the perpetual animosity they’ve carried since they were kids they did have their good moments too. And though Y/n would never admit it, there’s a part of her that does actually care about him even if she loathes that part of her deeply. In their teens they were at each other throats a lot, but in between that they would occasionally have their good days where they would refrain from getting into screaming matches and instead would be able to tolerate being together. Y/n chooses to describe it as tolerating him since she’d never admit she sometimes enjoys his company.
Through their formative years whenever Y/n was throwing a party, she wouldn’t protest when her friends would invite Harry as well. Pretending like she didn’t know he was coming and didn’t want him there when she saw him in the crowd, yet he always had a feeling she was anticipating and secretly wanted him to make an appearance. When he’d plan some sort of adventure with their friends he’d do the same, always slightly relieved when she’d show up but he’d put on the irritating act as soon as he got the chance which ruined her mood, every time. and well, it would be a lie to say the two never found themselves hate fucking each other after one of their parties, drunk and pissed at each other only to pretend like it had never happened.
To Harry, the animosity mixed with a hidden sense of fondness and maybe even a hint of attraction.
The woman ignored his comment, chewing her food before taking a swig of the soda looking back at him with a rather unamused expression. “What do you want Harry? And who the hell even let you in here?” she continued eating and wrapping up her email while he formed his reply. “Told Morgan I’d bring it up to yeh, she’s got a bit of a crush on me so she handed it over without much convincing.” Yet another eyeroll from Y/n was delivered. “She’s like 19, don’t manipulate her into worming into my office just because she can’t see that you’re a much bigger prick then the one in your pants will ever be.”
“First of all, 19 is legal so if she wants to eye fuck me I’ll allow it. Second, don’t be rude. This is a professional setting, do you think it’s appropriate to talk about my genitals in the work place? Might have to report you.”
Y/n couldn’t help the small snort she let out at his antics. As much as he annoyed her, sometimes she did find him a bit humorous. “and for the record, I’m very happy with my package and I don’t appreciate that comment.” He pointed a finger at her, a fake angry look on his face. “Just as much as I don’t appreciate you intruding on what was supposed to be my down time to eat, we’re even shrimp dick.”
Harry gasped at the insult, squinting at her slightly. While Harry was skilled in pressing her buttons, she could do it the same. Making comments on his dick size, sex skills, business deals or things of that nature always got him riled up. That 12-year-old boy mentality rearing it’s ugly head any time she makes a comment about his dick being small. Childish he was, absolutely childish.
“Don’t get smart with me, I’ll whip it out right here to prove my point.” His eyebrow raised and she could see him chewing on his cheek in annoyance. She truly found it funny how peeved she could make a grown man by making fun of his penis. He was ridiculous.
“I’d prefer if you didn’t, I didn’t bring my mental scrub brush to work with me today.” When she had finished speaking the woman tossed her now empty salad box into the trash, taking another sip of her drink and finally sending off the painfully long email.
Harry decided it was time for him to head back to his own office, which was right across the street much to Y/n’s displeasure but of course he couldn’t leave without a final childish jab at the woman.
“Just remember, I’ve had you bouncing on my dick more than once. Don’t hold yourself so high and mighty dear, because we both know I’ll have you like that again.”
And with that a Harry with a cheeky smirk on his face left the office, leaving a slightly stunned Y/n in his wake.
(eek pt.1 lets see how this one goes.)

A Look Back At...The Last Generation (2013-2020)
I’d like to start this off by thanking those who encouraged me to write this article, my friends and family who encouraged me to rekindle this project despite my own trepidation. I hope its quality lives up to those lofty expectations.
Say what you will about the hobby, gaming is in many ways the gift that keeps on giving. Every year there are hundreds, if not thousands of new offerings for every brand of player out there. And wouldn't you know it, there's a fairly significant portion of that library that are actually pretty good. Now, people will argue ad infinitum about what games are the best, or what consoles, or even which generation trumps the rest. This diversity of opinion is what has allowed gaming discussion to thrive just as potently as the medium which it encapsulates. Like any opinion, all of this is especially subjective; great games have been coming out pretty much every year since gaming began, a trend that seems like it will continue as long as gaming itself continues to thrive. While some may argue, I would say the latest generation thrived especially well. Ignoring the Wii-U, since I never owned one, and skirting around handhelds, the latest generation spanned the life of the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, and technically, the Nintendo Switch. And through their seven-year life [switch notwithstanding], we saw the release of some truly excellent games - from top budget AAA titles to humble indie offerings. Now, in 2020, while we as a community are taking our first steps into the new generation of gaming, I think it fair to take pause, gaze back, and remember some of the games that made the latest generation so memorable for so many.
2013
2013 marked the start of the last-gen, with the release of both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. Both consoles were built to shepherd out their predecessors, marking leaps in visual fidelity and infrastructure that would empower them to become the monoliths of gaming that they hoped to be. I won't say that both consoles had an equally vibrant launch, but they both tried to put their best foot forward. While the Xbox was busy desperately trying to become the multimedia center for your living room, Sony kicked off the next generation in style, releasing a whole seven days earlier than its competitor. With the Xbox not far behind, both consoles brought a suite of new, shiny games to play. Well, in theory, anyway. I'm not here to speak of the quality of the launch lineups of either console, but what I can do is list off the game that stood out, and why it made it onto my list.
-Assassin's Creed Black Flag Black Flag actually saw its initial release on the PS3 and Xbox 360 almost a month prior to the soon to be current generation, but with both new consoles came a second release, one that came equipped with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from what was then a next-gen game. It doesn't look good for my list to start things off on a technicality, but this game is worth it. Black Flag remains one of my top three Assassin's Creed Games, which is saying a lot considering the sheer scale of the franchise. Fresh off the love it or hate it Assassin's Creed III, Black Flag looked to take a revitalized approach to the franchise formula, playing off of fan feedback, expanding upon what fans loved from AC3, and adding in new activities and a broader, fresher open world to explore. In it, you play as Edward Kenway, a charming rogue of a pirate who kicks the game off by stealing the identity of a defected Assassin. Expecting nothing more than riches and glory, his masquerade instead goes quickly sour, thrusting Edward into the conspiracy filled, secretive world of the Assassin and Templar conflict. What makes this story stand out is how different Edward was as a protagonist, seeing him acting largely indifferent to the traditional formula the assassin's creed games had followed thus far. The game's setting also helped it immensely; the game plays more like a pirate simulator, seeing players sail the Caribbean searching out treasures and fame, gathering a sturdy ship and a hearty crew, engaging in thrilling naval battles, and basking in the warm glow of the sun-drenched sands that define the game's many islands. Along the way, you interact with a bevy of historical or mythical figures, such as Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Calico Jack, and many more. All of this came together to create an immensely satisfying game, a standout amidst its peers and predecessors, and an experience that still stands the test of time despite the numerous sequels it has received.
2014
2014 was the year the new generation really started to pick up. The consoles had begun to get their footing, truly ushering in the next wave of quality games and proving their value to the players. Several critically acclaimed games got their start here or saw revitalized releases on the current generation of consoles. However, there were a few strays, games that elected to release on the prior consoles first and foremost, games that wouldn't see new-gen ports for some time, and others that never did, but still merited recognition and praise. But how many will make it onto my list? Well, you'll just have to read on.
-Titanfall Titanfall was, for me, the first game on the Xbox One that truly cemented it as a worthy purchase. It was a melting pot of ideas and innovation that I immediately fell in love with. Built with an always-online principle, Titanfall sees players engaging in a pseudo-campaign of multiple, looping competitive matches. On the surface, you could easily glance Titanfall's way and see nothing remarkable. Another first-person shooter in a sea of competitors, all of whom had far more clout at the time. But what set Titanfall apart from the start was its dedication to movement, satisfying and fast-paced gunplay, and especially, robots. See, Titanfall's whole gimmick is this; players take on the role of Pilots, better than average soldiers of the far future who are deployed in times of conflict as superior ground troops, but more importantly, heavy artillery. As pilots perform well on the battlefield, they can call in the titular Titanfall, summoning their respective Titan to the fray. Titans are large, deadly mechs that can be piloted by the player to give them a distinct advantage in battle. What this translates to in gameplay is simple; as players make their way through matches, they build up a meter which when filled allows them to call down a massive robot to wreak havoc. Every player can do this, usually multiple times a match if they're good enough. Titans are fast, tough, and lethal, and fun as hell to control. But what kept the game balanced was the fact that titans weren't invincible. All players came equipped with anti-titan weaponry, alongside their usual loadout of rifles or handguns. This meant that anyone could take a titan down if they were savvy. The titans, coupled with the frantic movement and satisfying shooting, made Titanfall a one of a kind game. It's fitting, then, that the inevitable sequel would go on to improve on it in virtually every way, but that'll have to wait for later.
-Diablo 3 I will admit to not having played this in its initial release window, in fact, some years would pass before I finally picked it up on console during a sale. And though my time with it was quite belated, I would still consider it to be a genuinely fun game, one worthy of being on this list. In Diablo 3, players choose between seven classes; Wizard, Monk, Necromancer, Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter, Barbarian, or Crusader. From there, they are thrust into the demon-plagued land of Sanctuary, beginning their adventure in the town of New Tristram. Each class has a different backstory and a slightly different narrative throughout, but the core throughline is thus; you are sent to the village to investigate reports of a falling star, only to be swept up in a fight against hell and heaven itself for the fate of the world. In terms of game difficulty, the game sports an impressive twenty difficulty tiers; easy, normal, hard, master, and then sixteen levels of torment. Should players want an even greater challenge, there's also hardcore mode, which starts you off with permadeath: you get one life, no exceptions. Die, and the character is gone for good. Overall, I would say that Diablo's biggest strength is in its gameplay loop; Diablo plays like a top-down, hack and slash role-playing game, with players exploring the various levels in search of loot all the while battling hordes of enemies and leveling up, earning new abilities and skills that players can swap out to create their ideal builds. The core gameplay loop, while simple, is wildly addictive, with a massive loot pool to chase in an effort to grow ever stronger. Each class plays differently, but all of them are easy to learn. Diablo also supports local and online multiplayer, making it a great game to play with friends or family.
-Sunset Overdrive Sunset Overdrive is a game I've previously covered on this blog before. In fact, I'd say I did such a good job that if you want to read about it, go read that article. But if you'd rather not click away, let me give you the TL;DR. Sunset overdrive is a satirical open world game made by Insomniac in which you play as a cocky and comedic hero out to save their city from a bogus energy drink that caused a pseudo-zombie outbreak. It's built around movement, with the player grinding on rails and running on walls and doing everything they can to stay mobile while gunning down the mutated enemies and exploring the environment. It's funny and feels great to play while being hampered by an underwhelming character creator and suite of customization options, but still manages to come out on top as an immensely satisfying game.
-Destiny Destiny is the brainchild of one Bungie studios, the original creators of Halo, the next game on this list. Fresh off their amicable split from Microsoft, Bungie did what they did best; develop a truly great FPS. But this time, they added a twist; Destiny is equal parts Shooter, Looter, and MMO. It took these three core ingredients and mixed them together with gusto, delivering an immensely entertaining game that felt incredible to play both alone or with your friends. The story of destiny is a long one, but can be summarized simply; Some years in the future, Humanity met and allied with an alien being known as the Traveller, an alliance that heralded massive technological and social leaps, ushering in the new Golden Age of humanity. Unfortunately, the Traveller's natural enemies, The Darkness, attacked the solar system, destroying much, and whittling down the last survivors to a single safe city. In response, the Traveller created Guardians, reanimated protectors infused with the Traveller's power, tasked with defending the earth and all its colonies from the encroaching forces of evil that threaten this dwindling peace. Resurrected by a ghost, an emissary of the Traveller, you play as one of these Guardians; taking on the role of either the agile Hunter, the cosmically magical Warlock, or the strong and stalwart Titan. From there, you could either progress alone or join up with friends to take on the challenges of the solar system, pushing back the forces of darkness. Although lacking in longevity in its first outing, destiny was quickly expanded and iterated upon, turning it from an already impressive game to a true powerhouse and pillar of its genre.
-Halo: The Master Chief Collection I won't pretend this started off as a flawless, perfect compilation of prior Halo games. But I love Halo, and I loved playing these games again, so it makes the list. Especially after all of the improvements and subsequent additions 343 made to the collection post-launch. On release, it featured Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4, but has since gone on to include Halo 3: ODST and Halo Reach as well. If you're unfamiliar, Halo is a staple franchise in the Xbox lineup, and the master chief collection sought to unify all of the prior releases under one umbrella for the newest console. Halo is a sci-fi FPS franchise, largely following the saga of the titular Master Chief Petty Officer, John-117. John, or Master Chief as he is more commonly called, is a Spartan; a supersoldier of the future, who fights to protect humanity from an alien collective dubbed The Covenant. In the first game, Master Chief crash lands on an alien ringworld known as Halo, which later turns out to be an ancient superweapon created to exterminate all sentient life in the galaxy. Subsequent games only build the stakes from there, seeing John stave off one intergalactic threat after another in a franchise that continues to satisfy time and again. What the Master Chief Collection does is bundle everything up in one convenient package, while simultaneously offering tweaks and improvements to complement the technological advancements of the new consoles. It offers local and online multiplayer, both for its story and its competitive modes. Overall, even with the flawed beginnings, I would consider The master chief collection a must-have for Xbox players.
-Grand Theft Auto V Ah yes, GTAV, the game that refuses to die. Technically, this game released on the Xbox 360 and ps3, but it's been put on the PS4/XBO and now even the PS5 and the latest Xboxes too. I won't be surprised if this game gets ported to the consoles that come after that, too, in seven or so years. This game just won't quit. But that's also a testament to the dedication of its player base and the overall quality of the game itself. GTAV is an irreverent, biting joy of a game, replete with humor and charisma. It was, and remains, the latest in Rockstar's open-world crime franchise, in which players take on the role of not one, but three separate characters trying to make their way through life in Los Santos California; Michael, a retired crook stuck in the witness protection system, Michael's former, quite deranged partner Trevor, and rounding out the cast is Franklin, a street-savvy up and comer. Together they go about committing numerous heists, shady deals, and more than a few moments of mayhem in their quest for glory. Its secondary selling point was a robust and open-ended online mode, where players could create their own character and participate in myriad activities with and against their friends and strangers for fame, money, and clout. This is the mode that has kept GTA going in the years since its release, and it is the mode that has seen the most improvements and updates as well. I spent a not inconsiderable amount of time in it myself, but it was always the story of Michael, Trevor, and Franklin that drew me in overall.
-Tales from the Borderlands Tales from the Borderlands is the only Telltale game I'm putting in this whole list. Not for lack of quality on the other games' parts, but simply because this one has to be my favorite. For those unfamiliar, Borderlands is a series of FPS games that take place far in the future on the fringes of space; the titular Borderlands. It follows a revolving door of ragtag Vault Hunters, people who go in search of mythical, alien "vaults" that are rumored to contain vast amounts of treasure. They are incredibly popular, addicting looter shooters that match satisfying gunplay with beautiful cell-shaded graphics, topped off with charming and funny characters and not too shabby storytelling. Telltale games, on the other hand, are traditional point and click adventure games, released in episodic formats and usually broken down into seasons. They focus on storytelling first and foremost, showcasing incredibly compelling narratives influenced by player choice. You'd think, then, that these two dichotomous formats wouldn't pair well together at all, but Tales from the Borderlands proves that sentiment is wildly false. Tales from the borderlands took what was great about previous telltale games, and matched it perfectly to an original tale set in the Borderlands universe. It weaves an incredibly compelling narrative, filled with equal parts humor and feeling, and manages to tell one of the best Borderlands stories to date.
2015
I don't have a lot to say about 2015. The new generation was still going strong and saw some truly excellent games grace its shelves, many of whom are going to appear below.
-Bloodborne 2015 kicked off incredibly strong with Bloodborne, the latest instant classic from the studio behind the equally popular Dark Souls franchise. Bloodborne melds the skill-oriented, punishing combat and exploration heavy maps of the Souls games with an eldritch, psychological atmosphere, a match so perfect it went together like peanut butter and chocolate. To espouse the story of Bloodborne would be an effort in itself, but I shall do my best to summarize it; Shirking the more medieval settings of the Souls games before it, Bloodborne sees players navigating the victorian gothic town of Yarnham, a city plagued by beasts and monsters. It is these monsters you are tasked with dispatching, taking on the role of a Hunter of Beasts, sent to cleanse the town of that which ails it. But not is all as it seems, and the beasts may not be the only monsters Yarnham has to offer. Outside of its interpretive yet incredibly strong narrative, Bloodborne offered equally polished gameplay, iterating on the previously mentioned combat from prior dark souls games to create a punishing yet wildly satisfying gameplay loop that was easy to learn yet hard to master. Bloodborne forced players to always be on their guard but gave them no shield or barrier with which to do so, believing that offense was the greatest defense, making success hinge on your willingness to fight and your skill in surviving the nightmares that Yarnham had to offer. A melding of horror, action, and exploration, Bloodborne was a true success, cementing itself for years to come as a top tier action-RPG, and saw countless fans that remain dedicated to it to this day.
-The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt I'm going to be blunt; This is one of my favorite games of the last generation. It is a top tier RPG, made up of an incredibly charming cast of characters, a beautiful open world, and a thrilling, fantastical narrative that all come together to make one of the best games to release in the last seven years. Though a sequel to not only two prior games, but also a long line of books, The Witcher 3 was surprisingly friendly to newcomers, of which I was one at the time. Despite its pedigree, I felt right at home in the world of the Witcher, quickly picking up on what I had missed in its long and storied life. The Witcher 3 puts players in the role of Geralt of Rivia, the titular Witcher, a magically enhanced human tasked with routing out monsters that threaten the world of man. This time around, Geralt is searching for his ward, Ciri, as he navigates a world fraught with monsters and men in equal measure. what starts as a simple search for a missing friend quickly blossoms into an adventure for the fate of the world itself. Though a fantasy RPG at its heart, the witcher manages to tell some particularly grounded and human stories, and this game is no exception. One moment will see you stalking a beast out in the wild, the next will see you navigating political intrigue in the courts of royalty. But it all flows together to create one of the best RPGs I've ever played, and one that earned a not inconsiderable amount of well-deserved praise when it first debuted back in 2015.
-Assassin's Creed Syndicate Hot off the heels of the muddied AC Unity, Syndicate was the last proper Assassin's Creed game before the franchise would experience a massive genre and gameplay shift in its next entry. Where Unity saw too much focus on graphics and not enough care anywhere else, Syndicate finely balances all of its parts to create an impressive experience overall. This time around, players get to visit London, at the tail end of its industrial revolution. Out goes flintlocks and swords, in came steam and steel. This entry sees players in the role of both Evie and Jacob Frye, siblings fresh off their induction into the Assassin Brotherhood, tasked with dispatching justice on their Templar foes across London. The setting isn't the only big change for this game, as Syndicate saw an overhaul in both visual quality, scale, and gameplay. London feels lived large and lived in, with plenty of ground to explore and streets filled with people going about their day-to-day. Missions are split between Jacob and Evie both, with some allowing you to pick and choose and others forcing you into the shoes of one or the other as they work together to clean up the city. It innovated on the traditional gameplay loop, with this game having you going from borough to borough, toppling its templar leaders and expanding your sphere of influence with the aid of historical figures like Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, and Nikola Tesla. These famous faces are not the only people lending the Fryes their helping hand, as Syndicate also put the Fryes in charge of their own street gang, a ragtag group of brawlers and scouts that would come to their aid at the press of a button. Most times, conquering a borough involved you and your gang scrapping it out with those of the templar order, dusting knuckles to see who got the final say in the control of the area. This may seem at odds with the traditionally stealth-oriented approach prior games focused on, but that side of the game was not neglected either. Assassination missions saw fine-tuning and innovation as well, with players able to plan out and partake in uniquely tailored kills that matched the locale and personality of their target, from disguising yourself as a scientific cadaver to kill a corrupt doctor to allying with a guard and feigning capture to infiltrate and kill a target in the Tower of London. The game saw improvements out of combat as well, with Syndicate receiving a large overhaul in its parkour movement and general navigation. The Frye twins come equipped with a grappling hook that allows for speedy travel across London's many rooftops, while ground travel was made all the more expedient with the inclusion of horse-drawn carriages. The general parkour itself was also tuned, allowing for freer player movement and tighter directional control. All of this to say, Syndicate saw some truly welcomed improvements, iterating on the legacy and creating a lasting impression that stands up as one of the better games of the franchise.
-Star Wars Battlefront While I've spoken of a Battlefront on this blog before, this is not that same game. Rather, this is Battlefront 2015, a soft reboot to the previous Battlefront line of games for the new generation of consoles. This Star Wars Battlefront was helmed and developed by Dice, famed for the Battlefield franchise, a line of competent and entertaining military-focused first-person shooters. They were known for solid campaigns, but more importantly, massive scale competitive multiplayer modes. This pedigree is shown heavily in Battlefront, with the game sporting 64 players competitive multiplayer, with teams taking on the roles of either the empire or the rebellion as they fight their way through maps taken straight from the star wars universe, from the snowy plains of Hoth to the immense forests of Endor and everywhere in between. The game was replete with game modes and had the ability to be played in either first or third person. Players were given access to a modest selection of in-universe weaponry, and could even take the role of recognizable star wars heroes on occasion. Visually, the game was stunning, with incredibly faithful and detailed recreations from everything to weapons to the maps themselves. It felt like a genuine passion project, built from the ground up by competent developers and made for fans and first-timers alike. Battlefront, much like many games on this list, has since been usurped by a sequel but remains an incredibly competent shooter and a genuinely fun game to play.
2016
While 2015 saw the release of some truly impressive games, 2016 was a genuine powerhouse of a year. It saw the rise to prominence of Virtual Reality, through the oculus rift and the PlayStation VR. 2016 also saw the first re-released console of the current generation, in the form of the Playstation 4 Pro, a trend that Xbox would follow as well, seeing the release of 2016's Xbox One S, and in 2017, the Xbox One X. These were touted as faster, better performing, better-looking consoles than their base model predecessors, offering several enhancements to graphical fidelity and console performance, running games even better than they already did. And with these new consoles came an all-star suite of excellent games, a multitude of instant classics from big-name studios and fresh indie developers alike. Many of the games that released this year are ones I've individually covered before, but they still deserve their spot in this article. So without further ado, here are some of the most noteworthy games of 2016.
-Oxenfree Where Bloodborne was the standout hit that kicked off 2015, Oxenfree did the exact same thing for 2016. Developed by the California based indie team at Night School Studios, Oxenfree is a supernaturally infused, slice of life adventure game that follows Alex, a witty, rebellious, soon to be high school graduate as she makes her way to the fictional Edwards Island, accompanied by her best friend Ren and new stepbrother Jonah. This small group of friends is meeting up with what they assume will be a large group to have a weekend bash, But what was supposed to be a boisterous weekend party turns out to just be two extra guests; Clarissa, a fellow student who has ties to Alex, and Nona, a mild-mannered girl who just so happens to be Ren's current crush. Their modest get together quickly goes south when Alex uses a small handheld radio to tune into a weird signal emanating from the island, unleashing the spirits of a sunken military submarine, long since lost at sea. These wayward souls possess one of the kids and scatter the rest across the island, forcing Alex to uncover the mystery of their death and find a way to save her friends and escape the island. The game wears its inspirations on its sleeve, taking queues from classic ghost stories as much as it does retro coming of age stories, but it adapts these ideas masterfully. As for how it plays, Oxenfree is a side scrolling point and click adventure game, built around exploration and dialogue rather than complex game mechanics. It explores the interpersonal relationships between all the characters as much as it explores the haunted nature of the island itself. It easily shifts between these disparate tones, with a story filled with as many supernatural spooks as sarcastic teenage banter, seamlessly integrating player choice into the mix to create a truly excellent narrative. Oxenfree also features a high amount of replayability, with player choice going on to influence which of the game's many endings, as well as touting a new game plus mode that adds an extra smattering of content for your subsequent playthroughs. Oxenfree was a gift that kept on giving, more than earning its spot on this list.
-Firewatch Firewatch is the first of several 2016 games I've previously written about, and while my opinion of it may have not been the highest initially, ruminating on it since has led me to a new appreciation of the time I spent with it. I would recommend reading my original review, but the short summary is thus; you play as Henry, a man on the run from his troubles who takes a job in the Shoshone national forest, keeping an eye on the wildlife and ensuring nothing is amiss. Your companion through the game is Delilah, a voice through your walkie talkie, somebody else who has taken the same job as you over in one of the adjacent watchtowers. Throughout the game you explore the forest, keeping the area safe while exploring the mysteries of the area you now inhabit, all the while developing a friendly relationship with Delilah as you go. It's a simple, but satisfying first-person adventure game, with an emotionally charged but comedic narrative about one man's journey to get lost and find himself.
-Stardew Valley Stardew Valley is a retro-inspired simulator game about a down and out office worker who inherits their grandfather's farm in the titular Stardew Valley. They leave their mundane life behind and embark on a new journey in rural life, building up the farm from a rundown, untamed field into a bustling agricultural powerhouse, all the while making friends and forming bonds with the locals that you meet along the way. Stardew plays like a dream and features a stunning pixellated art style that complements its easygoing nature. Stardew is a game you can get lost in with ease, featuring an incredibly satisfying gameplay loop; It's a charmingly simple sim, one that encourages players to make their own way and their own choices, with a multitude of different ways to spend each in-game day. You're encouraged to play the game at your own pace, experiencing its range of content as it comes, rather than being railroaded into any one path for progression. It's a game that encourages exploration, diversity, and freedom, one that never really ends. Stardew made waves when it first came out for being such an open-ended, friendly experience, and it has since gone on to be heavily expanded upon by its developer, seeing releases on even more platforms and accruing even more fans along the way. It's a game that's easy to love and hard to put down, a comfort food game that makes you want to revisit it time and again.
-Titanfall 2 Where the original Titanfall was an excellent Xbox exclusive, Titanfall 2 bloomed the franchise into a multiplatform powerhouse. While it kept the excellent multiplayer modes, Titanfall 2's biggest change was the inclusion of a proper single-player story, and it's this inclusion that sees Titanfall 2 earn a place on my list. Titanfall 2's campaign is short, but sweet, seeing players take on the role of Jack Cooper, a pilot in training under the mentorship of an experienced soldier named Lastimosa. Unfortunately, on their first field mission, Lastimosa is killed, forcing Jack to embrace his future role as Pilot in an effort to survive and keep Lastimosa's experimental Titan out of enemy hands. This Titan, given the codename BT, is unique among Titans in that it can freely equip the various titan weapons and abilities, while simultaneously having an expanded AI that allows it to perform better in combat than its contemporaries. Together, Jack and BT make their way through the Frontier, coming into conflict with the varied enemy forces that they were originally sent in to stop. The campaign is brief, but what it lacks in lengths it makes up for in entertainment; the banter between Jack and BT makes for some great dialogue, and the campaign is perfectly built around the shooting and movement tech that made the first Titanfall so distinct, creating a series of levels that are just as built around gunfights as they are around precise first-person platforming. The game's environments are also beautiful to look at, varying from gritty industrial complexes to lush jungle environments that are as nice to look at as they are to maneuver through. Accompanying the stellar story mode is the recurring suite of multiplayer offerings, all of which have been upgraded and improved upon to complement the innovations of the sequel. Where Titanfall was good, Titanfall 2 is great, and it's a continual shame the series hasn't been given more time to shine.
-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition This is another game that I've previously covered on my blog, and it's also another technicality. See, Skyrim technically released back in 2011 but saw so many re-releases in the years afterward that at this point the only device that doesn't natively play it are phones. With this particular re-release, Bethesda sought to give console players the same quality of life changes that PC players had been seeing for years, namely graphical improvements, stability patches, and most importantly, player-created content. Skyrim had developed a bustling and dedicated community of creators in its years since release, all of whom had made countless mods for the game that ranged anywhere from simple tweaks to full-on expansion sized stories, and the special edition release marked the first time Xbox and Playstation fans could get their hands on this library of unique content. It created a situation where the already hefty game could be made all the more robust with fan contributions. Don't like the music? Download one of the unique music packs somebody put together. Want any number of pop culture-inspired items? Looking for some new quests to spice up this five-year-old game? It's all there and more.
-Watch Dogs 2 You might be wondering why I've put Watch Dogs 2 on this list while its predecessor is nowhere to be found. While the first Watch Dogs was a middling revenge story that happened to incorporate some neat hacking based features, Watch Dogs 2 is where the franchise really found itself. It follows the story of one Marcus Holloway, a bright and witty young man who's been framed for a crime he didn't commit by a faulty surveillance network that monitors the city of Los Angeles in a pseudo-dystopic future not so removed from our own. So Marcus does what he does best, hacks into the network and removes himself from it entirely, embarking on a campaign to take the whole system down with the help of white hat hacker collective Deadsec. What sets this game apart from its predecessor is the charisma of its cast and the far more varied ways in which you can use the game's technology to your advantage. Hijack cameras, remote control vehicles, manipulate streetlights, the world of Watch Dogs 2 is yours to manipulate all at the press of a button. And if hacking doesn't get you where you need to be, Marcus has some skills of his own; he's particularly skilled at parkour and quite handy at non-lethally dispatching foes with a weapon of his own design, a billiard ball attached to a bungee cord. And if playing non-lethally isn't your thing, you can also accumulate quite the arsenal of homemade weaponry, all 3D printed from the base of your hacker collective. Watch Dogs 2 is a game about a group of people trying to take down a corrupt system using whatever means they can. It's a witty, satirical, but surprisingly grounded story told across a beautiful open-world recreation of Los Angeles, one that drew me in far more than its predecessor ever managed to do.
2017
2017 might not have had the same pedigree of games as its predecessor, but it did see the belated release of the latest current-gen console; The Nintendo Switch. A revolutionary step up from the Wii and Wii U, The Switch took the gaming world by storm thanks to its ability to seamlessly transition from a home console playing on your TV to a handheld console able to go with you anywhere. The Switch remains a staple of the console market to this day, easily standing tall next to the Playstation and Xbox consoles both new and old. Aside from the Switch, there was still a healthy collection of games for people to enjoy, some of which will be highlighted below.
-Night in the Woods Night in the Woods marks yet another game I've personally reviewed, and also stands proud as one of my absolute favorites of this generation. A humble offering from indie studio Infinite Fall, it was a gorgeously animated sidescroller of an adventure game that followed college dropout Mae Borowski as she returns to her small home town of Possum Springs to rekindle old friendships and reconnect with her family. Despite its anthropomorphic cast, it tells a genuinely human story, one that perfectly reflected what it feels like to revisit old haunts; how things can be so familiar yet change so much, seamlessly blending an emotionally charged narrative with a dark, suspenseful hometown mystery. Night in the Woods remains an absolutely incredible game to experience, showcasing themes like mental illness, sexuality, and identity through the lens of youthful wit and clever, dry sarcasm. I haven't played many truly perfect games, but Night in the Woods came damned close to being one.
-Kingdom Hearts 1.5/2.5 Ah yes, another collection of re-releases. Kingdom Hearts technically started back on the PS2, with the release of Kingdom Hearts 1. From there it blossomed into an incredibly diverse and lengthy franchise that saw releases on consoles and handhelds alike, from the PS2 to the Gameboy Advance. What these re-releases did was bundle all of the Kingdom Hearts games into one complete package, and tossed them all onto the PlayStation 4. It created a cohesive collection for this storied saga and presented it all in an easy to follow order that anyone could pick up and work through. Both games also offered the previously exclusive Final Mix content to the west for the first time, expanding on the already hefty games with more difficulty options, more enemies, more story content, and more challenges to keep the fun going and going. But what is Kingdom Hearts, I hear some people ask. Kingdom hearts is a series of action RPGs that follow the adventures of heroes known as Keyblade Wielders as they fight against the forces of darkness that threaten the worlds beyond. They play great, feature an especially enjoyable cast of characters, and tells a heartwarming story of good and evil. A joint project between Square Enix and Disney, Kingdom Hearts features an abundance of Disney characters and worlds, crossing over with various Square Enix properties in this epic struggle against light and dark. That's the easiest summary of the story by far, as delving any deeper would almost certainly confuse the casual reader, but let me say this; The Kingdom Hearts games are fantastic, well worth the time, and with these remastered collections, more approachable than ever.
-Nier Automata Nier Automata is a tough game to talk about in-depth, on account of just how easy it is to spoil for people who haven't experienced it. But it was also one of my favorite games of 2017, so I'll do my best to give it its due. Nier Automata is somewhat of a hybrid game; it blends so many genres together but somehow manages to do each one of them justice. Equal parts open world, action RPG, Bullet Hell, and more, Nier Automata takes place in the far, far future, in the ruins of earth. Humanity has long since abandoned the planet and sought shelter on the moon, entrusting a group of humanoid androids to defend the planet from an encroaching alien threat. The story follows several of these androids; 2B, 9S, and A2, as they wander the ruins of humanity and fight back against the robot foes that the aliens use as soldiers. It tells an amazing story that all but demands subsequent replays to get the full breadth of its narrative weight across, with each subsequent playthrough seen through the eyes of one of the other characters. Equal parts sci-fi story and humanist breakdown, Nier Automata is a deconstructive, philosophical pondering wrapped in the guise of an anime action game. That's not to say it doesn't wear the disguise well; Nier Automata plays like a dream, with stylish combat and an accompanying score that makes for easy listening both in and out of the game. It's another must-play, especially with the remake/remaster of its predecessor soon to release in 2021.
-Persona 5/Persona 5 Royal Persona 5 is an absolute joy of an RPG. It's slick, stylish, has a superb soundtrack, and tells a top tier story to boot. You take the role of a down-and-out high school kid who's been forced to transfer from his hometown in the countryside to Tokyo, thanks to a bogus police incident. Labeled a criminal and looked down on by the adults of his new school, the protagonist goes about bettering himself, raising his grades, and making the most of his new life in a new city. He forms bonds and relationships with the people around him, making fast friends with many of his classmates and even some chill adults along the way. Oh, he can also use a supernatural phone app to dive into the corrupted hearts of society, utilizing a special power to battle the evils that lie within and force them to change their ways and confess their deeds. Herein lies the dichotomy of the Persona 5; Much like the other Persona games that preceded it, the story it tells is a hybrid of supernatural mystery and coming of age drama, blending mundane highschool life with a fantasy adventure. It is equal parts life simulator and stylish role-playing game, as you and your friends do their best to repair a broken system using the fantastical powers they've been imbued with. These powers are the titular Persona, powerful creatures that embody the sides of ourselves we keep hidden behind the masks of society. These personas allow one to do battle with the shadows that lurk within these corrupted hearts, creatures that take on myriad forms inspired by religion and myth. Wielding this power, they embark on a journey of social reform, fighting a revolving door of less than scrupulous individuals that all culminating in a battle to change society itself. In spite of its overtly fantastical elements, the story it tells is decidedly grounded and surprisingly relatable; at its core, Persona 5 is about a collective of disenfranchised individuals trying their best to make it through life and change things for the better, a story that was and remains especially poignant and a welcomed escapist fantasy to fall into time and again.
-Slime Rancher Slime Rancher is an adorable simulator game and one I've praised before on my blog. It blends first-person shooter elements with the farming simulator genre, tasking players to manage and explore a planet on the fringes of space that's almost entirely populated by a race of creatures known as Slime. Slimes come in a varied selection of types and sizes, but all of them have one universal similarity; they all produce a resource known as a Plort that you can trade to an intergalactic trade center for currency, which in turn allows you to upgrade your slime farm and expand into new territories. The gameplay loop is nothing but fun, with each new expansion bringing in new species of slime that you can wrangle and combine to make hybrids that in turn create more valuable plorts. As you make your way through the planet, you start uncovering logs left behind by your farm's prior owner, that weave a narrative of love and loss, a story that drives you forward in your quest if only to see how it concludes. You're not alone in this quest, though, as you have your slimes for company as well as several long-distance conversations via the computer in your home between friends and fellow farmers alike. Subsequent game updates have only expanded upon the experience, seeing new opportunities for trade, daily activities, and more, making an already invigorating and enjoyable game all the more so.
-Destiny 2 It's no secret that Destiny 2 had a complicated launch window. Many fans felt that Destiny 2 left too much of what made its predecessor great on the cutting room floor, electing instead to reset the player base back to zero and tell a brand new story. While I missed some of what Destiny 2 left behind, I was still somebody who found a lot of joy in Destiny 2, as evidenced by the thousand-plus hour count it tells me I've poured into it since its 2017 release. The game has also seen countless improvements and additions in the years since its release, adopting a new seasonal model and even going free to play after a point. Most recently, Destiny 2 saw the release of Beyond Light, the first in a new trilogy of expansions that hopes to continue the game forward over the next few years. So, while it might have had a rough start, it still remains destiny at its core, making it one of the best shooters on the market, coupled with a satisfying loot hunt and a rewarding structure that continues to keep its fans coming back for more. That alone lands it in my list of games for 2017, and the generation as a whole.
-The Sims 4 Though this game technically saw the light of day back in 2014, I didn't end up playing it until its console release here in 2017. Thus, I place it here. There isn't a lot of complication with Sims 4. If you're at all familiar with its predecessors, you know exactly what to expect. An engaging simulator game, in which you craft an individual or family and set them on the path of life, influencing them as they go or leaving them to their own fates so as to see what happens. You tailor their looks, personality, aesthetic...it's a premier example of micromanagement as entertainment. This installment shirked some of the advancements made by its predecessor but still manages to be a robust and enjoyable game all on its own, made all the better by continued additional content releases in the years since its premiere. It's a game that keeps on giving and seems primed to continue doing so for some time yet.
2018
2018 saw the release of some genuinely top-shelf games, with the Switch continuing to establish itself against its contemporaries, while the Playstation continued to add excellent exclusives to its lineup.
-Far Cry 5 The Far Cry games have always been known for being competent shooters with large open worlds, and this one is no exception. Shirking the usual foreign locales, Far Cry 5 takes place a lot closer to home, seeing players cleaning up the rural backwoods of Montana, taking place in the fictional Hope County. In it, you play as a rookie cop sent in to apprehend an evangelical doomsday cultist; John Seed, The Father. This arrest quickly goes south, leaving you as the last lawman willing to stand up to the Seed family and free Hope County from their grasp. To do so, you systematically break the hold of his lieutenants, dismantling their bases of operations and taking down his associates in a slow climb to face him once more. Along the way you make friends and allies out of the locals, people with a similar drive to rise up and clean up their county. As far as the gameplay, Far Cry 5 is a mix of FPS and RPG elements, with a rudimentary character customization system and plenty of powerful guns to acquire. You level up and earn skills that augment your preferred style of play, be it stealthy or over the top, all in your pursuit of justice. Augmenting this quest is the world it takes place in, with players exploring lush forests, vibrant fields, and the general detritus of rural America. Hope county feels real, with looks to match, despite its farcical tone and over the top gameplay. All of this came together to make a Far Cry that felt fresh and fun, a genuine step forward for the franchise.
-God of War Prior games in the God of War series were not known for subtlety, nuance, or humanity. Rather, they were violent hack and slash games that featured the titular God of War, Kratos, seeking and exacting bloody revenge on the greek pantheon for their slights against him and his family. They were by no means bad games, but they weren't what I would consider masterpieces either. Then, we were given God of War (2017). This soft reboot/Sequel for the franchise saw Kratos embarking on a distinctly more grounded story than its predecessors, navigating the perils of fatherhood while on a journey to deliver his late wife's ashes in the world of the Norse Pantheon. He is joined by his son, Atreus, a bright but rebellious young boy who seeks only to prove his worth to the gruff and distant Kratos. This more human story is accompanied by a more grounded approach to combat and gameplay; while it retains the emphasis on action, it feels more deliberate than prior entries, shifting the combat style from the hack and slash nature to a more measured approach, with players needing to conserve stamina and plan their attacks lest they get easily overwhelmed. The game also incorporates a more open world structure than its predecessors, seeing Kratos and his son freely traversing their environment, unlocking shortcuts, and finding means to double back on past areas in a level progression that feels more like a Souls game than the God of Wars of old. All of this came together to make a game that felt genuinely innovative, a fresh new direction for a pre-established franchise that was as welcoming to newcomers as it was to prior fans.
-Donut County Donut County is a silly, short indie puzzle game in which you play as a mischievous raccoon delivering "donuts" to the unsuspecting populous around him. These donuts are, in fact, large sinkholes that expand as they eat different objects, eventually growing to swallow the entirety of the lot they were sent to. The core gameplay lies in this concept, with you controlling the various sinkholes from level to level, figuring out the order in which to consume the various objects on each map in order to grow in size. As the game progresses you unlock various upgrades to these sinkholes, like the ability to spit things out of them, adding new layers to the simple puzzles the game encapsulates. It isn't a terribly long game, as already said, only taking an hour or two to finish, but it cemented itself as a charming indie game amidst a sea of big-name titles.
-Marvel's Spider-Man Developed by Insomniac, previously mentioned in the Sunset Overdrive excerpt, Marvel's Spider-Man is a rare example of a genuinely amazing superhero game. In it, players take on the role of Peter Parker, a Spider-Man who has already established himself as the hero we know and love, but one that still has room to grow and learn. What starts off as a triumphant takedown of one Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, soon blossoms into a complicated web that involves a shady group known as the Demons that Spider-Man must stop from wreaking havoc on the city. But the game isn't just about the Heroics of Spider-Man; The Game showcases the best aspects of Peter's character, splitting the game equally between his time as Spider-Man and his normal life as Peter Parker, a scientist working under the apprenticeship of one Otto Octavius, while simultaneously working with his Aunt May at the local Homeless Shelter and trying to rekindle his forlorn relationship with Mary Jane. All of this unfurls simultaneously, weaving a web that melds incredible movement with fast and stylish combat, stellar characters, and a heartwarming tale, cementing itself not only as a great game but also as one of the best Spider-Man stories out there.
-The Missing: JJ Macfield and the Island of Memories The Missing is a heartfelt, down to earth story told through the lens of a grisly but goofy premise. In it, you play as the titular JJ Macfield, a young girl who goes on a trip with her close friend Emily to a remote island off the coast of Maine. What is supposed to be a fun excursion takes a turn for the worse, as Emily goes missing, leaving JJ to track her down. Unfortunately, this quest quickly leads JJ to her death...but not for long. Resurrected by a bolt of lightning, JJ gains the ability to remove various parts of her body, as the island quickly goes from an idyllic wonderland to a psychedelic nightmare. Undeterred, JJ uses her newfound ability to traverse the island, ever searching for her lost friend. The Missing might sound like a horror game on paper, but it uses these macabre themes to tell a distinctly grounded story about dealing with personal identity and navigating a hostile and unfamiliar world, culminating in a heartbreakingly bittersweet twist that I won't spoil here. This is all to say; the Missing is an excellent game. It's a joy to play, despite its harrowing content, and it manages to convey its themes in a way that feels genuine and meaningful, telling a story that's still relevant to this day.
-Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Smash games have always been good, and Ultimate more than earns its moniker. This is the Ultimate Smash game; iterating on its predecessors without changing anything for the worst, Ultimate is an unabashed love letter to the series as a whole, incorporating every character and every map from every prior game all in one upgraded package. If you don't know what Smash is, let me explain; Nintendo is known for a lot of fantastic first-party titles, from Mario to Kirby to Metroid, and countless others. Smash takes all of these well-loved characters, throws them in an arena, and has them fight for supremacy. Debuting on the Nintendo 64, Smash has seen one major game release for every Nintendo console since, culminating in Smash Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. As earlier stated, it features an absolutely enormous roster of playable characters, featuring every fighter from the previous games and several new additions for good measure. This roster was only further expanded with the release of the fighter passes, seeing an additional eleven fighters across the two that have thus far been released, ranging from surprise hits like Persona 5's Joker to fan favorites like Banjo and Kazooie. While not featuring a traditional story mode, Ultimate makes good use of its characters in a suite of different game modes that can be played both alone or with friends, online or locally. It's a fantastic party game and an equally praiseworthy fighter, rewarding skilled play but catering to casual players and newcomers alike.
2019
2019 marked the slowdown for the current generation, shadowed by the whispers of a new age of consoles. This made for a simple year for games, but one no less stacked with noteworthy games and worthwhile experiences.
-Kingdom Hearts 3 After years of waiting, 2019 finally saw the release of Kingdom Hearts 3. The wait might have been long, but the game delivered on the hype, simultaneously closing out the narrative arc that had begun so long ago with Kingdom Hearts 1 and beginning a new chapter for fans to look forward to. In service of this goal, Kingdom Hearts 3 wrapped up the majority of dangling storylines from all the previous games, while still leaving a handful of mysteries to chase into the future of the franchise. It featured a new suite of Disney worlds to explore, and incorporated Pixar properties for the first time in franchise history. The new content accompanied refined and polished gameplay mechanics and a complete visual overhaul, while still retaining the heart and soul that defined the games thus far. It all came together well enough but was later expanded upon through the release of Re: Mind, the game's beefy expansion that rebalanced gameplay and added in hours of new story content to better cap off the story. All told, Kingdom Hearts 3 was another great game, building on a legacy that seems like it will continue well into the future.
-Devil May Cry 5 For those not in the know, Devil May Cry is a series of games that follow the life of Dante, a half-demon sword for hire as he does his best to kill monsters and eat pizza. It's a franchise known for skillful, precise, stylish combat mixed with goofy, over the top stories, usually involving Dante and his associates contending with the fallout of his family, the demon king Sparda and his brother Vergil. While not a flawless franchise, it saw several excellent releases over the years, but then went depressingly dormant. Devil May Cry 5 was the perpetual waiting game, but 2019 saw it finally come out, accompanied by mass acclaim and praise. it really seemed like all the years of waiting were well rewarded. DMCV features three playable characters; Nero, a fellow demon hunter first introduced in Devil May Cry 4, Dante, the series' staple protagonist, and lastly the mysterious V, a newly introduced character for this game. Together the three were tasked with working together to take down the demonic Qliphoth and its master, Urizen, an immensely powerful demon lord. The game looks gorgeous, marking the first time the games have looked truly next-gen. Accompanying this boost in visual fidelity is the franchise's staple; combat was finely tuned to be more stylish than ever, with each character having a variety of tricks at their disposal to dispatch the demon hoard that stood between them and Urizen. Devil May Cry was back, and it was better than ever.
-Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Bloodstained is the spiritual successor to the Castlevania series, helmed by its most prominent contributor Koji Igarashi. Starting its life as nothing more than a simple Kickstarter, it blew through its funding goal and a few years later saw its release on the current generation of consoles. It's not a particularly complicated game, but it is particularly fun, with it adapting many of the staples that made Castlevania so great. As a spiritual successor to Castlevania, the games play very similarly; both are side scrolling hack and slash games that take place in fantastical gothic castles, and both see protagonists with varied combat and magical aptitude on their quest to take down the castle's owner. In the case of Castlevania, that owner is Dracula, but in the case of Bloodstained, players are tasked with defeating Gebel, an alchemically modified human known as a Shardbinder. You play as another one of these Shardbinders, Miriam. Miriam and Gebel are the lone survivors of an alchemical experiment that gave them the ability to wield a power called shards, crystalline embodiments of demonic essence. The narrative is simple, but the gameplay is where it shines; as players progress through Gebel's castle, you can accumulate more and more shards, all of which give Miriam access to new abilities, abilities that go on to aid her in her continued exploration. This creates a very satisfying loop; explore the castle, collect shards, unlock more of the castle to explore. Augmenting her shards are a suite of craftable and upgradeable weaponry, a selection of melee and firearms that allows players to diversify their preferred playstyle and experiment with what works best in any given situation. Subsequent content additions have added even more to the game, in the form of new modes, difficulties, and playable characters, adding to the replayability and longevity of what was already an excellent experience. Despite starting from simple roots, Bloodstained rose up and became something all on its own, paying homage to its inspirations while cementing a name for itself as a new staple of the genre.
-Catherine Full Body While originally releasing in 2011, 2019 saw an expanded re-release complete with new characters, new stages, and hours of extra story content. At its core, Catherine and its Full Body re-release are unique gems in the gaming world. One part puzzle game, one part dating simulator, it blends the complicated world of relationships with macabre block puzzles, all the while weaving a beautiful tapestry about one man's quest for love. In it, you take the role of Vincent Brooks, an unambitious 30-something simply going through the motions of life. He has a steady relationship and a stable job, a group of colorful and enthusiastic friends, but it's clear from the start just how much he's stagnated. His current girlfriend, Katherine, is starting to ask the big questions; marriage, children, their future. Unable to parse these ideas, he loses himself in his time at the local bar with his pals, shooting the shit and getting sloshed. That is, until, a new flame suddenly appears; the seductive temptress Catherine. One thing leads to another, and it comes to pass that they spend the night together...maybe. This is where the game's narrative really kicks off, with Vincent having to navigate the day to day, attempting to reconcile his long-time love with his possible new fling. This story is juxtaposed against the game's core gameplay loop, which sees Vincent forced to climb the deadly tower of babel each night in his dreams. To do this, players must stack blocks and avoid the perils and traps that each stage presents, making a mad dash to the top of the tower before the bottom collapses in on itself and Vincent plummets to his doom. For you see, this isn't an ordinary dream; if you die on the tower, you die in real life, making this desperate ascent a race for his very life. Each stage of the tower represents the game's various core themes, and each gets more and more complicated as the game progresses. In the interim of these climbs, players are set about answering multiple-choice inquiries that influence the direction of Vincent's relationships, with each answer adjusting a conspicuous morality meter that eventually comes to determine which of the 8 endings you could attain. With Full Body, this number was increased to 13, to adjust for the inclusion of a new paramour; Rin, a mysterious piano player that sets up shop in Vincent's favorite bar. Both Catherine and its Full Body re-release are excellent games, but I was especially smitten with the layers of extra content and story that Full Body brought to the table, additions that made Full Body one of my favorite games of 2019.
-Untitled Goose Game Untitled goose game is a simple premise on paper; players take on the role of an ornery, mischievous goose as it wreaks havoc through a small English town. Equal parts puzzle and stealth game, the goose has a laundry list of tasks it seeks to complete, from stealing hats off people's heads to infiltrating the local pub. It's not a long game by any means, but it has a ton of replayability in the form of additional tasks and challenges that only present themselves after your first playthrough. These range from time-based completions to additional bouts of mischief and all of them are incredibly satisfying to chase down. Untitled Goose Game has a quaint, painterly art style that compliments the charming simplicity of the game's premise, accompanied by a dynamic, classically-toned score that rises and falls in prominence as you go about your goosely business. All said Untitled Goose Game is a genuine treat, a brief but whimsical game that's just about having fun and goofing around.
2020
It's no secret that 2020 has been a rough year for a lot of folks. Between a pandemic, political controversy, and general drudgery, it's a year that feels like it can't end soon enough. But in spite of it all, 2020 was also a fantastic year for games. Serving as the last hurrah for the Xbox One and Playstation 4, we saw the release of some truly excellent stories that kept players going through the long months of an otherwise mediocre year.
-Animal Crossing: New Horizons Releasing right at the start of widespread quarantine, New Horizons supplied people with something they couldn't easily do in their own lives; escape. Animal Crossing New Horizons is the perfect escapist fantasy for the year it released in, seeing players partaking in an island getaway in the hopes of colonizing and forming an idyllic town on an untamed paradise. At their core, the animal crossing games are simple simulators. You create your character by selecting a few presets; hair, eyes, skin color, and then you're let free to explore your new locale. With this latest release, that locale is the aforementioned island, a small paradise in the sea dotted by trees and rivers, accented by flowers and weeds. You start your life on this new Island with a handful of other residents; the Nook Family, the proprietors of this island venture, and two random villagers who are looking to make a life on this island the same as you. Things start small, with everyone working together to set up tents and create a bonfire and find some food for a welcome party. Afterward, the game synchronizes itself to your console's date and time and sets you off on your way. Unlike other simulators on this list, Animal Crossing is a unique breed, running concurrently to the real world, continuously progressing in real-time. Flowers grow, trees produce fruit, and each day is a new adventure. It follows the general turn of the seasons for your respective hemisphere, celebrating holidays and alternating available activities with each passing day. As for what you can do yourself, the opportunities are legion; you can catch bugs, go fishing, search for fossils, chat up your villagers, visit other islands, and much more. As you progress, more ventures open their doors to you; catch enough bugs and fish, and you can elect to have a museum built to showcase your finds. Collect enough resources, and you can build new furniture and create plots of land that encourage more villagers to come and move to your island. Everything you do is in service of continued growth, but also serves just as simple fun, a charming, easygoing distraction from the concerns of the day-to-day.
-Final Fantasy VII Remake The Final Fantasy franchise is a long and storied one, replete with highs and lows. One such high was 1997's Final Fantasy 7, a game that quickly cemented itself as a fan favorite and an absolute classic. Now, in 2020, FF7 is back...sort of. See, FF7 Remake is the first in a line of games that will eventually go on to tell the entirety of the original FF7's story, which means that this release is only the first portion of a much larger narrative. Adapting what was originally the first few hours of the original game, FF7 Remake expands upon the opening section of its predecessor, simultaneously remaking the old content for modern audiences and adding in new aspects for old fans. FF7 Remake improves upon the original in practically every way, serving as a genuine remake that still manages to retain what made that original game so memorable and important to fans. The game might be new, but the heart is the same; FF7 Remake follows the story of Cloud Strife, an ex SOLDIER turned mercenary hired by an eclectic group known as Avalanche to dismantle a local power plant that's poisoning the planet. What starts as a well-intentioned but extreme case of eco-terrorism quickly explodes (pun intended) into a much larger story that sees Cloud and Avalanche bringing the fight straight to the corrupt Shinra Corporation and beyond, culminating in a battle against fate itself. Because this remake only covers a portion of what will go on to be a much larger narrative, it only scratches the surface of what makes the original FF7 so great, but it does so with gusto; the game plays and looks better than ever, bringing with it a heartfelt and compelling narrative that keeps you hooked the whole way through.
-Minecraft Dungeons Minecraft Dungeons takes the charming, voxel visuals and world of Minecraft and melds them seamlessly with a charming, easygoing dungeon crawler that's approachable for casual and experienced gamers alike. Where Minecraft is an open-ended sandbox game about building and exploring a blocky world, Minecraft Dungeons sees a collective of heroes on a quest to defeat the evil Illager, a powerful sorcerer whose armies have been sweeping the land leaving destruction in their wake. It's not a very complicated story about good and evil, but it doesn't have to be; Minecraft Dungeons prioritizes it's simple and easy to master gameplay first and foremost. You collect loot, battle recognizable Minecraft enemies, and progress through a litany of stages on your way to fight the big bad. It's not very long but encourages you to play it time and again, collecting better gear and trying your hand at the many difficulty levels for additional challenges. It's not the best looking or the best playing game that released this year, but it had heart and made for a short and entertaining way to pass the time.
-Ghost of Tsushima Ghost of Tsushima isn't a game to scoff at. One of the best looking games of the generation, this PS4 exclusive is one part historical timepiece, one part action-adventure, and one part stealth game. It follows the story of Jin Sakai, a samurai and one of the last survivors of the Mongol invasion of his home island of Tsushima, Japan. Left to die, he is found and nursed back to health by a wayward thief who teaches Jin the art of stealth and subterfuge, seeing him off on his quest for bloody revenge on the Mongol invaders that have encroached upon his homeland. To do this, he must first build up a fighting force of equal minded, skilled warriors, all while dismantling the various camps and operations the Mongols have set up in the absence of the defeated Samurai army. Jin can approach this in one of two ways; relying on his prowess as a formidable Samurai, Jin can challenge the many enemies in the game to flashy yet precise sword combat, or he can utilize the recently learned skills of stealth, infiltrating their encampments and silently picking the Mongols off one by one. There's no wrong answer to how you choose to play, although it takes some time for Jin to accept his new roles as both Samurai and assassin. Both methods of play feel equally as stellar, too; Combat in this game is incredibly polished, finely tuned swordplay that focuses on timing and well-planned strikes to dispatch your foes with ease, while the stealth feels tense and requires a distinctly tactical approach, planning your routes and cleverly dispatching foes so as to not raise suspicion. But the game isn't just about taking out your enemies. Ghost of Tsushima boasts one of the most beautiful open worlds I've ever experienced, a vibrant and gorgeous landscape dotted with myriad activities and side quests for you to explore and enjoy. One moment, you could be doing battle with a wayward group of Mongols or bandits, while the next could see you tracking a friendly fox to a shrine, composing a haiku in the shadow of a large tree, or recuperating your strength at a small hot spring while you ruminate on your adventures thus far. Ghost of Tsushima is an incredibly varied game, alternating between intense highs and calming lows, all coming together to become one of the best games of the last generation.
-Spiritfarer While I have not finished this game, it more than deserves recognition on this list. In it, you play as Stella, a young girl who takes over as the ferryman for the River Styx once Charon retires to the afterlife, tasked with providing for the wayward souls who live on the river as you ferry them to their final rest. To do this, Stella must collect various resources and build up her ship, outfitting it with living spaces and various commodities tailored to her current passengers. These aforementioned passengers will, in turn, begin to open up to Stella, tasking her with making certain foods or visiting different locales, all in an effort to give these wayward souls a proper farewell on their trip to the afterlife. Spiritfarer is a simple simulator game about resource management and exploration that showcases a lovely, genuinely heartfelt story about love and loss, one that will put a smile on your face as easily as it brings a tear to your eye.
And with that, I close out this hefty list, closing out the last generation. This compendium hardly scratches the surface of the last seven years' library, but hopefully, I did a good enough job remembering some of the games that made this last generation so great. There are a lot of games that I've still yet to play, resting in wait in my backlog for the time they get pulled out and given their due, but for now, this concludes my walk down memory lane. The last generation saw some excellent additions to the vast and ever-expanding library of video game history. Here's hoping the next several years can say the same. The start of the new consoles is off to a very promising start; in the last month or so alone we've seen excellent releases from both indie and big-name developers, fresh takes on old franchises, and new IPs alike. So, here's to the Last Generation, here's to the Next Generation, and here's to gaming overall; may it continue to thrive for years to come.

2.43 S1 Chapter 2.4 - Dracula and Princess Briar Rose
4. BEAUTIFUL WORLD
Previous || Index || Next
“Suemori-san.”
I was startled when my name was called. It was a calm voice that was humble but not excessively servile.
Kanno stood at a distance of about three meters from me. I was holding the net at the center line, and Kanno’s feet were above the attack line, so he was actually three-meters away. There was a clear difference in height now without even having to stand side by side to compare. I think it was a difference of six or seven centimeters. I didn’t think…it was past ten centimeters, but… When I was picturing myself next to Kanno in my head, even though he squirmed a bit uncomfortably, he didn’t apologize fearfully and meaninglessly like in our first year.
Suemori-san. I pondered the voice that called me. The last time he called me “Ibara-chan” was last September. And I feel like this was the first time he called me “Suemori-san”—we hadn’t called each other’s names once during these nine months. I wondered at what point during those blank nine months did I change from “Ibara-chan” to “Suemori-san” within Kanno.
“About the ballgame tournament, I received the list of who’s in each event for our club, so I have been told by my senpais to consult with Suemori-san and decide the allocation of duties, but…”
He’s still speaking with formal language mixed in, even to someone in his own grade, I thought, and while feeling something that was like nostalgia and sadness, I said, “It’s fine. If that’s the case, let’s do it on our way home today.”
I tried my best to respond in a natural manner, trying to be somewhat distant for the three meters of space Kanno had opened between us, but also not too blunt. I’ll be in your care, Kanno said, bending his long back and quickly bowing his head.
I watched his back as he left, him who was dressed unseasonably as ever with his long T-shirt and long pants, even though it was June. Kanno still participated in the girls’ team practice for half of the week, but ever since they witnessed his seizure on the outside court, no members made fun of him anymore. On the contrary, there was a mood of “Kanno-kun is working so hard even though it’s hard on his body,” and everyone became weirdly nice to him. Even now, when he ran over to the girl who was drawing the net strings to the side of the pole and said “I will do it” as he reached out his hand, he was politely refused with “It’s fine. Akiton should sit down” and ended up having nothing to do. Akiton was Kanno’s new nickname. Come to think of it, I haven’t heard Dracky at all lately.
From where I was looking, I thought that seemed pretty awkward, but anyways, my role as Kanno’s (unwilling) knight was no longer necessary.
I noticed that there was a girl looking at us from the entrance of the gym. It was Ayano, holding a basket lined with drink bottles.
“…I feel like I haven’t seen Ibara-chan and Akiton talking in a long time.”
“Oh, we’re just getting in touch about clerical work, for the ballgame tournament. I’m helping the boys this year.”
I felt like I was being glared at, so I unintentionally made an excuse. It wasn’t even an excuse, it really was nothing more than talk about work. “You don’t have to worry about that,” Ayano said, her lips tapering into a pout and she turned away.
“No, no, I’m not worrying about it at all…”
Nonetheless, my behavior towards Ayano was still mostly filled with a sense of guilt. Ayano might like Kanno…looking at her actions during that incident last year, even I, who was completely unfamiliar with matters of love, could tell that. I wondered if she confessed to him…I didn’t know what happened after that incident, since my conversations with Ayano had decreased considerably since then. I did the worst possible thing—disparaging a girl’s body in front of the boy she liked.
“It’s thanks to Ibara-chan that I lost weight, so I’m really not thinking anything right now…”
Ayano muttered in a slightly soft voice while still turning away.
That’s right. Ayano, who had been chubby, had slimmed down quite a lot since then and, taking advantage of her bust and hips which had been ample by nature, now attained well-balanced proportions. It seemed that my words triggered her to go on a diet. I was surprised at the unexpected willpower that lay sleeping within Ayano. That wasn’t at all. Maybe because her body was lighter, her play became agile and nimble, and she became a bench member in her second year. Since she didn’t have the stature, her spike power was inferior, but she was praised for her thorough and careful defense. What I hated so much and concluded that a strong player didn’t need, Ayano became stronger without throwing it away.
On the other hand, as for me—as evidenced by the fact that I was dispatched as a coordinator with the boys’ team for the ballgame tournament, I had been languishing without being selected for the bench. In middle school, if I worked hard, the results of my hard work came naturally to me, but since I became a high schooler, I kept getting betrayed by myself.
I loved volleyball. I wanted to be better than everyone else. I was willing to cut away anything that would hinder me from that. As a result, I ended up losing my friendship with Ayano, the reverence from Kanno, and my pride as a volleyball ace that should have been everything to me.
“Yeah…now I’ve become the most shameful and useless thing.”
I let out a weak self-deprecatory remark. “Ibara-chan…” Ayano turned her face towards me. The top of her nose was wrinkled, and she looked she was about to cry.
“Ibara-chan, you’re not going to quit the team, are you…?”
I didn’t answer her, only giving a forced smile.
I had actually received a club withdrawal form. The coordinator thing this time made it doubly sure for me, and I had made up my mind. I intended to write my name on it and hand it in after the ballgame tournament work was done, and leave volleyball. I intended to seriously quit it.
——Until the day before yesterday.
The day before yesterday, when I saw the boys’ practice on the outside court——.
⋆﹥━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━﹤⋆
The ball that rose high up into the blue sky shone in the afternoon sunlight, burning my eyes. The one who took off from behind the attack line and rushed in like a bullet was that first-year, Kuroba Yuni.
That was a back-row attack? That jump distance was unbelievable. He jumped in with his whole body all the way to the net, as though he was attacking from the front row. His figure, arched in midair, seemed stationary, as though it was a photo. Such a long flight duration. His arm flexed like a spring that had stored up energy and returned it all at once, and he punched in the ball.
However, in the next moment there was a cloud of dust rising on Kuroba’s side of the court. “Daaah—” Kuroba groaned in frustration as he sank down and landed. Even I, who should have been calmly watching on the courtside, lost sight of the ball’s trajectory for an instant, but Aoki-senpai, who had jumped for a commit block, covered it with his long arms and shot down the bullet spike.
Amazing…just amazing. That was so cool. I couldn’t suppress the long-forgotten thumping of my heart. Each moment of that play was bold and so fast that I almost couldn’t follow it with my eyes. Just when I thought the ball had disappeared from my view, a dust cloud leapt up from the ground with a dynamic sound, like something exploding. I squinted many times at the dazzling aerial battle that unfolded while causing grains of light to burst into the air.
For me, the most beautiful sport on Earth was there.
There was a world that I couldn’t stop longing for, so much that it was painful.
For the first time since I reaped what I sow and lost many things, I thought that I did love volleyball after all, and I didn’t want to quit. Perhaps now, I could say this with the purest feelings I had since I met this sport.
I loved volleyball.
***
It took twenty-five minutes riding on a local line that was only composed of two cars to go from Nanafu to Monshiro. Bench seats against the windows were only placed on both sides of each door, and the rest were box seats with seats for two facing each other. Kanno and I occupied one of those seats, and we sat shallowly on them with our knees facing each other.
“…Even assuming we can manage with the staff for the first and second games, the problem starts from the third game and after. When Team C’s match starts, the team members will pack the court, and we’ll have to get the members who went out to basketball and futsal back immediately…”
“I think we’ll definitely not have enough staff at some point.”
“We’ll have to adjust the games so we’ll have enough. We’ll move the fourth game of Team E versus Team F over here, and the sixth game with Team D versus Team F…”
“Oda-senpai is in Team F, so I think it’ll work out well.”
“Oh, I see.”
While we were humming and hawing, at a loss, the two of us wrote on both sides of the notebook that was spread out on our laps. The notes were becoming unreadable due to the flood of arrows, boxes, strikethroughs, and desperate-looking messy lines.
The boys’ volleyball team had just eight members. From that, we would send out four people as staff members for each game, and there were those who took part in each event as competitors apart from that, so it would be impossible to run the boys’ volleyball division without the full rotation of eight people on a meticulously calculated time schedule. A lunch break was out of the question, and we might not even be able to give them a bathroom break. I mean, even if you rotate them at full speed, it was bound to break down somewhere, right?
Looking down at the messy notebook, I got a headache. Ah, I wanted to open the window and just throw it outside.
Around seven p.m., there was still a thin light outside the window. Come to think of it, summer solstice was approaching, so this was the time of the year with the longest daylight. After passing through the cities of Nanafu and Suzumu, the two-carriage train was moving a slow pace through the countryside wrapped in a warm, dim light. Since the rice planting was just finished in May, there were still only green seedlings planted in the fields. The water surface limitlessly reflected the distant mountains.
Every time the car swayed a little too much, I felt ticklish from the rubbing of my kneecap against Kanno’s kneecap beneath his spread-out notebook. I was tempted to retract my leg, but it felt somewhat like a waste of time to do so.
“We both got some irritating work forced on us, huh.”
Though I was grumbling, that was why we didn’t have to finish talking about work for the time being. However, Monshiro Station was already coming up soon. Usually, I slept for the twenty-five-minute ride when I could sit down, but each minute and second felt strangely precious today.
I curled my back and dropped my gaze to the notebook. Kanno also looked down at the same notebook from above my head. I had my toes standing up, and Kanno’s heels were on the floor. The fact that the notebook was kept level meant that the length below our knees was that much different. He just kept shooting up.
He’s got an awfully big lead on me, I thought once again, but strangely, the jealousy and hatred and uneasiness and chaotic feelings I had in my first year that made my heart hopelessly ugly, did not appear anymore. I wonder if I matured a step…that also felt wrong, and I was quite confused about myself.
“I don’t really think it’s irritating. I’m having fun right now.”
I heard a whisper above my head. My heart leapt at the word “fun,” but,
“I only play with the guys half of the time, and I can’t help much with setting up or cleanup, so…I’m glad I’m able to help out with this kind of work, because it makes me feel like I’m doing club activities with everyone else. The senpais didn’t say anything about that, but I think they knew that and gave me this job.”
“I guess you’re more comfortable in the boys’ team, huh?”
I didn’t mean that sarcastically, but it must have sounded like I was, because Kanno flinched and his face tightened. It seemed that he still hadn’t fixed his habit of peeking at my expression.
“The senpais on the boys’ team seem like good people. The girls’ team has a strange atmosphere, and you can’t always go all out, can you? I know you’re holding back in the intra-team games.”
“Well…if I go all out, I’ll blow the girls away.”
In the past, he might have put himself down and immediately apologized with a “I’m sorry,” but he pouted slightly as he plainly affirmed that. It was as if something like the core of self-confidence had taken root within Kanno, and I felt relieved, but at the same time, I felt somewhat sad for some reason.
Even before I realized it, Kanno himself must have been aware that he was starting to outstrip the girls in terms of strength and was out of place among them. And that wasn’t something that could be obtained “without much effort, just by the good luck of being born a boy,” like I had accused him of before.
I happened to see Kanno in his training wear in my neighborhood last year on an early autumn night. He was jogging and entered the park near the middle school, and unconsciously concealing my presence, I watched him do strength training on the bars and seesaw until the end.
Kanno somewhat looked like a normal athletic boy during the night, not wearing his hood completely over his head and frightened by the threat of the sun like he was during the day. It was then that I learned about the side of Kanno who worked harder than others because of his physical disability. No, I was supposed to know that a long time ago. He was the target of unreasonable teasing, and there was no reason for him to go out of his way to stay in the girls’ team to the point of feeling uncomfortable, but he worked harder than anyone even in basic training that was nothing but painful, and never missed a day of practice.
Because, like me, he loved volleyball—he told me that I was the one who taught him the fun of volleyball. Maybe that was the only thing I could be proud of.
He was probably still training at night on his own. He looked stronger, with another faint layer of muscle on his neck and arms. The nails on his fingers gripping his mechanical pencil were deeply trimmed. His fingertips were a bit chapped, but it was an indoor sport, so the underside of his nails wouldn’t be darkened with dirt. His protruding joints was due to the repeated spraining of his fingers. His long fingers were for catching the ball and accurately handling it, and his large palms were for powerfully driving in spikes. The hands that I thought were beautiful were characteristic of male volleyball players.
Kanno had become independent of the “shadows” that had been clinging to my back and only stirred up my frustration and impatience, and after taking some distance and time where I was able to calm down, I was feeling a bit nervous right now, coming in contact with him like this again.
I knew what I was saying was too convenient at this point. There was no way the selfishness of trying to get back something you pushed away but wanted later could be allowed unchallenged. You had to take responsibility for what you have done.
We were approaching Monshiro Station. I closed the notebook and put it in my bag.
“Aaah, we didn’t finish it. Let’s do it tomorrow.”
I secretly cherished the feeling of our kneecaps brushing up against each other, but I quickly stood up and carried my schoolbag and enamel bag with me. It was a one-man operation train, so if you were too slow, it was easy to miss your stop.
“…Kanno?”
Right when I stepped into the aisle, I looked back suspiciously. Kanno hadn’t even attempted to stand up, his behind still stuck to his seat.
“I’m riding to the next station, don’t worry. I can’t walk you home, but be careful.”
“Hah? Why?”
“Um…well…I can’t get up. My knees have no strength…”
“Huh…what’s that about, did you get hurt? You want me to escort you home?”
Worried, I brought my face closer. “N-no, you’re mistaken,” Kanno pulled down the hood of his hoodie and turned his face to the window.
“When I was talking to Iba-Suemori-san today, I was actually really nervous… I summoned up all of my strength to call out to you, and once I did, I surprisingly felt like I could talk to you normally as a friend, so I was so relieved that my muscles went limp…Oh, I know that I already got rejected, so I’m really not thinking about anything more than that now, but it’s hard not being able to talk to each other at all during practice…”
Kanno’s pale face, hidden by the hood, turned red like the old days, and he talked quickly like he was feeling restless. While I was standing stock-still in the middle of the aisle, Monshiro Station’s platform slowly slid into the train window. The scenery stopped along with the vibration of being pulled sideways, and there was the sound of the doors whooshing open. There weren’t a lot of passengers, but some still passed by here and there. No new passengers got on from the platform. The departure bell immediately started ringing. “You have to get off,” Kanno urged, his face still hidden.
My toes hesitated for an instant over whether to go or not, but ultimately I placed my bags on the seats again and sat back down in front of Kanno.
“Wait, Iba…Suemori-san?”
Kanno raised his panicked face.
“It’s perfect. We still haven’t finished the arrangements, so let’s just do it now.”
“Yes, but…”
“And it’s a bit fun to go all the way to the final stop and loop back, so how about it?”
I spread the notebook on top of our laps without giving Kanno a chance to object. Looking like he found it hard to accept, Kanno chewed on the tip of his lip, but…
“Thank you…”
In the end, he gave in and said in a limp voice.
I was slightly discouraged to find out that Kanno had already finished drawing a line between us within him, but I was glad he said it clearly. I shouldn’t be forgiven by Kanno, and I didn’t want to be forgiven by him. I was sure that I would live with this regret for the rest of my life.
The bell stopped ringing, and the train started to move. The view of the platform fell out of sight.
I wasn’t saying to whom, but…if I had to say it, I made a promise with myself. When we got off this train and went our own ways home, I would put a lid on these feelings once and for all. So, just a little bit more. I was ready to carry a lifetime’s worth of regret, so wasn’t it okay for me to draw this out…for just a few more minutes?
***
“Um, it’s hard to say this, but…if we take this train to the end of the line, there are no more trains available to take us back…to Monshiro.”
Kanno brought that up when the curtain of night had completely fallen outside the window.
“What, why didn’t you say that earlier!? What’re we gonna do!”
“We can walk home or something. But it’ll be the middle of the night by the time we get there. I’m fine with nights so I don’t mind it at all. Suemori-san, I’ll carry you on my back if you’re tired.”
Considering that he said it was hard to say it, Kanno had a slightly happy expression on his face as he said that, and my resolve immediately wavered.

Heart Stop: Runner’s High (1)
A/N: New series because I really like writing series now? Yes. This was supposed to be on Wattpad only but a few moots requested for it to be on here and It makes me happy thinking you guys are going to read so thank you <3
Word Count: 1.6k (Like I said.. meant for Wattpad kdfjskdfsk)
Heart-stop: A condition known to two lovers once they have met their one true soulmate and will look no further.
“You’re acting up again Chris, stop it” You gritted your teeth, hands bunching up the ends of your dress to keep your sanity together.
“Who are you talking to?” Hyunjin asks, looking at you and proceeding to eat his sandwich.
“My heart, it’s doing that stupid thing again” He gasps mid-bite into his sandwich surprisingly, jumping up on his feet and frantically pulling out your heart rate monitor from your backpack.
“SHIT ITS A HEART ATTACK” Hyunjin shrieks, pulling the monitor closer to you and you pull back. “No, no Hyunjin it’s fine it’s just-”
“SHUT UP YOU'RE HAVING A HEART ATTACK” When he clasps the wristwatch around your wrist you roll your eyes. You should have never told Hyunjin about your condition.
“Y/N I swear to god your mom said if you feel anything weird I have to check-” A beep comes from your wrist and you watch Hyunjin as his fearful expression disappears. “Oh, you’re just fine” He says, collapsing down next to you and clutching his hand to his chest. “Thank god, I got seriously worried”
“Hyunjin, you’re such a drama queen. Chris and I are used to it at this point- don’t worry”
“Why did you name it Chris anyways?”
You scoff at his question, “Are you not aware of the hottest most amazing most talented most beautiful most sexiest Australian on this planet?”
Hyunjin smirks at you as a pack of swimmers run by, raising his eyebrows at the tall blonde as the boy laughs with his group of friends. “Is it Ch-”
“Chris Hemsworth, duh Hyunjin” You say, completely ignoring his gestures and picking up his sandwich.
“You’re not going to eat that are you?” Hyunjin says as you dust off the part of the bread that touched the ground.
“I made this sandwich for you, I deserve it” You smile, watching as Hyunjin looks at you in disgust.
“Ugh, your behavior sometimes y/n”

MJ’s university was one of the most top ranking universities in all of Korea. It held high standings in all sports and academics as well as in music. At first, you wanted to go to school with your best friends Seungmin and Jeongin but after MJ gave you a full scholarship to join the school your mother forced you to.
Luckily Hwang Hyunjin was in the same shoes as you were, his dancing abilities were top-notch, winning awards and recognition. But that was never what he wanted, to grow popular and famous. He just wanted to be an ordinary student, so he hung out with normal people- like you. At least that’s the way you saw it.
“You’re not going to the swim meet today?” Hyunjin asked, throwing an arm around your shoulder as you walked off the Campus’s entrance. “You know I don’t go to those things, it’s mafia night with the boys again. Are you coming?”
Hyunjin clicked his tongue before responding, “I can’t make it, but beware of Felix. He’s tricky”
You laugh to yourself remembering the last time you guys played, Felix cheated during the entire game and knew everyone’s roles.
“Alright, have fun watching men pretend to be fishes” You wave off, Hyunjin waving in response before a large group of girls holding posters and wolf plushies could come swarming in.
“BANG CHAN BEST LEADER” They all chanted, running past you and causing you to drop your books. Your jaw dropped in silence as papers flew out from between pages, your notes now scattered on the cement floor.
“Bang chan best leader” you mocked in a girl-like tone, picking up your books and fixing the notes before one paper could fly away.
You looked up to catch the paper as it flew past the wind, the sun blinding your view as the paper leaves your sight only to be caught by a tall figure.
“That’s right, ‘Bang Chan best leader’” He said, handing the paper into your hands.
“O-oh, thank you” You stuttered, taking the papers from his hand. Without a response, he simply left you sitting on the concrete ground, your knees starting to ache. Brown hair, squirrel-like features. He was cute. You wanted to follow him inside.
But mafia. :(

Twenty-two years of hard work and practice made what the teenager (basically Stays) would call “Best Leader Bang Chan”. He was the captain of MJ University’s swim team and also a member of a company taking swimmers to the Olympics.
“C’mon man, you got it mann” Jisung said sarcastically, trying to cheer his friend up as he slumped against the lockers.
“Who are these amateurs Jisung? Don’t they know I’m going to win anyways?” Chan said, scrolling through his phone.
Jisung threw out a hand for Bang Chan to get up, “But they want to see you win, just do it Chan” Bang Chan threw on a pout before his mother could come in, “C’mon Chan” She rushed in, throwing him his swimsuit that was on the ground. “Get ready!”
Jisung eyed Chan as he walked over to get changed, hoping that Chan would be in a good mood for the rest of the day considering he practiced during lunch.
When he came out Jisung reached out to Chan as he walked by. “Good luck hyung”
Chan walked out of the lockers, tossing a towel across his shoulder as his mom followed beside him.
“Remember Chan. The scouts for Olympics are here today”
Chan rolled his eyes as he opened the doors to the crowded natatorium.
“Welcome to the MJ University’s April Compo! We have a dashing line this afternoon” Girls cheered from left and right as Chan’s mom grabbed him by his ear, pulling him closer to her lips. “Ignore me one more time and I won’t let it pass. The scouts are watching you” She whispered harshly before letting go.
Chan eyed the two men in suits, full attention on the line of swimmers as he joined them in his spot.
“And there's our favorite Bang Chan!” The announcer called as Chan got up to his diving board.
Suddenly his goggles came on and he was face down looking at the water. What was this feeling he was supposed to have? The crowd is screaming, the countdown is ticking, and the timer is just about to start.
Chan stares plainly at the water, unamused, uninvited. Why couldn’t he feel the adrenaline that many others recall when they are in his position? Why can’t he feel the excitement, exhilaration, and euphoria when he stands-- the runner’s high? Has swimming become so accustomed that he cannot feel anymore?
A loud buzz is heard before Chan dives into the water. He doesn’t like the coldness and the taste of chlorine yet he strives through each movement, his body moving fluidly through the water ahead of him.
The underwater feels so normal that he doesn’t even have to take a breath, his heart continues to beat normally and his pressure is completely fine. He touches the wall before any of his competitors can.
“And that sets a new record for Bang Chan! Congratulations!”

“Are you okay?!” Jeongin asks, pulling you over to the couch and propping your legs up as you fists start to clench.
“J-Jeongin, the medicine!” Seungmin says, running over to the two of you with a glass of water and two tablets. You desperately grab for the pills and swallow them, your fist banging on your chest as if it would make it better.
It happened every time. It started with hiccups, then your knuckles would turn into a fist, and then your heart is contracting. It’s begging for help. It’s calling your attention and your mind is on overdrive trying to find ways to make it stop. Your thoughts flow to why this had to happen to you, a couple minutes of pain and you can’t form words until someone else could put the pieces together and give you the two magical tablets.
And rest.
It’s an ongoing cycle. Has been since you were six and you can’t help it. Doctors can’t treat it nor cure it. They can just give you pills to make it stop.
Sometimes you wish your heart could just stop all together.
»»————- ♡ ————-««
“You lost the bet again!” Minho laughed, nudging Chan to the side before Jisung could join. “Now you have to listen to us hyung!”
Chan simply rolled his eyes, a smirk on his face as he looked back at the two guys. “Okay, which girl are you going to make me talk to for you this time?”
Jisung hugged the elder as he pointed in your direction. “Her..”
“Isn’t she your noona?” Minho chuckled, watching as you stepped past the entrance.
“Yeah, but only Chan can get her attention,” Jisung replied.
“Why’s that?” Minho asks, clearly not impressed.
You watched the ground as you clutched your notebooks to your chest, making way through the people in the hallway and just as you were about to pass him, Chan turned around.
“Cause I’m a nice guy” Chan started, brushing with fingers through his hair and showing off a dazzling smile, “who just has a lot of money”
Walking away from the two youngsters, Chan turned around in the midst of his steps as if to say ‘watch and learn’ before he could bump into someone.
“Oh, sorry” You said, looking up at the boy and walking around him.
Usually Chan wouldn't have to make a move. Even though the incident was unintentional, he simply couldn’t speak.
Turning around, his eyes glowed at your figure and suddenly the world revolved around you. He could feel the adrenaline. The euphoria. The ecstasy that no pool or cranky mother could make him feel.
“Hey- wait!” Bang Chan called after you in the midst of breaths, but you never responded.
What was this feeling?

I know nothing of FNAF, who on earth is FNAF 4?
FNAF isn’t a character, I was matching games you each of you because I thought no characters went with you guys in this fandom
As for what FNAF is, strap in...
Alright, I’ll try to explain this the best I can. (Warning for dark themes, murder, and horror below the cut)
FNAF stands for Five Night’s a Freddy’s, a horror game that came out in 2014 got pretty popular. The basic gist of it was that you were a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, basically a knockoff Chuck-E-Cheese, but in this children’s restaurant, the animatronics had a free roam ‘Night Mode’ where they’d basically come alive and try to get to you in your office, kill you, and stuff you in a Freddy Suit bc they think you’re one of them. The ‘Night Mode’ goes from 12pm to 6am, in which you have to close doors, looking in the cameras, and use lights without draining all the power in order to survive the night. Five nights of this and you have your game.
Of course, fan theories came about with some news clippings on the walls of Freddy’s describing a series of child murders that took place in the restaurant, couple that with the excuse of a ‘Night Mode’ from Phone Guy, your boss, and you get some interesting speculation of haunted animatronics filled with the spirits of those dead children way back when, and then the spirit of the animatronic known as Golden Freddy - an old abandoned animatronic who sometimes appeared in your office during the game, glitching your screen and saying ‘it’s me’.
Of course with the popularity of the franchise, more installments came about, and what started as a small horror indie game was launched in pop culture and was gaining millions of fans overnight.
Then came FNAF 2, a whole new location with new mechanics to survive, like wearing a Freddy head. New animatronics called the toy animatronics. The old location apparently had shut down, and a new location opened up, giving the feeling of familiarity in a different place. Of course, lore evolved into figuring out the secrets behind these new robots, and the horror that was the bunny, bonnie robot without a face, not to mention the marionette doll. Finally, within some minigames between the nights, we figure out the killer of these kids, fan named ‘Purple Guy’.
FNAF 3 was a horror attraction where you were playing the role of a security guard and also actually being a guard for the place, while horror animatronics trying to make fun of the tragedies of FNAF 1 and 2 and make some money off it by bringing people into their version of a haunted house. Purple Guy is there too, in the ripped yellow bunny suit he used to wear when he killed the kids and is the only one you can get a game over to, the other just mess with ventilation and stuff and jumpscare you. Ends when the whole thing is set on fire and burned.
FNAF 4 was where lore stopped being discreet and just in your face. The whole game placed you in the role of a child in your bedroom at night in your house while the Freddy gang but much scarier - sharp teeth and claws - would try to get into your room and kill you. The real scary part was that the only way you can tell they’re coming is breathing, and sometimes even your voice being too loud could get you killed. Plus, and here’s the fun part - the only way to stop them is by holding your bedroom or closet doors shut. Minigames and lore are given between the nights talking about a child who has a fredbear plush who talks to him, and a family who would barely let him out of his room, dubbed ‘Crying Child’. He’s terrified of the Freddy robots, and his brother ends up putting him in an animatronic's mouth as a prank on his own birthday, and he dies from a head injury.
FNAF World was a fun game - not really that lore-based by any means. A cute RPG where you play as a cute Freddy and collect clocks and complete minigames to get endings. The only lore was with a secret dark side - the golden Freddy - it glitches and turns into the FNAF 4 freadbear, telling you to collect the clocks to put the world back in order. Also, Scott Cawthon, creator of FNAF was the final boss, unimportant but interesting.
After this was FNAF: Sister Location. All New animatronics - Circus Baby, Ballora, Funtime Freddy, and Funtime Foxy. You play as a night guard-ish in this animatronic rental place - Circus Baby’s Rental, a competitor to Freddy’s, and after the fire, became the only remaining company. Your job in the game is to zap the animatronics with electricity to make them behave and follow orders. Seems simple, right? Heck no. They’re angry and want to kill you for zapping them and keeping them imprisoned. They mess with the wiring for security and have you restart the system yourself with a whole bunch of minigames for your second night on the job after a helpful voice helped you to hide under the desk and evade them. You realize pretty quickly following the HAND unit’s instructions get you killed, but the other voice keeps you safe. This leads to two endings where after all the animatronics are disabled and merged into one called Enard, you either follow the voices instructions, get your insides scooped and Enard wears you like a skin suit in order to blend in and get out of the building, or you disobey and lead to an FNAF 1 style standoff with Enard, make it home and still get killed.
FNAF pizzeria simulator is exactly like the title - you make your own Freddy’s franchise, and depending on the choices you make to either salvage the animatronics found in the back alley or keep them out (Under your paragraph 4 contract), and then whether you complete the salvage or fail, leaving it to try to kill you in a certain part of the game when you’re in your office during the day doing tasks. In the lore-based end, all the animatronics thus far minus the originals who got their souls to rest in FNAF 3, are burned in the pizzeria, along with Purple Guy in his suit, ending up in H-E double hockey sticks in FNAF Ultimate Custom Night, the next game.
Finally, the most recent game in the franchise - FNAF VR: Help Wanted. In this game, the Freddy Franchise wants to ‘make light of silly rumors of danger in their restaurants’ by reliving the horror Scott created but in VR. Lore is hidden in tapes throughout the games that tell of a development team and the weird stuff that was going on during the game's development, and the connection of GiltchTrap, a part of the game used from scrapped Freddy’s parts for money, and now has Purple Guy’s soul trapped in the game with you trying to take over your body. in both endings of this game, not counting the completion of the last game, your body is taken over by Purple Guy, leaving you trapped in the VR game.
Phew. That was a lot. Hope it made some sense!

The Invictus Games held in Toronto that year game Harry a purpose and a new sense of accomplishment. After all the turmoil that he and Elle had been through the last months, being able to be a part of something he was so proud of and really make a difference, shone in him a new light and perspective on what he could do now that he had more influence and power on his hands. Elle had stayed behind since Arthur was still too young to travel and needed his mother.
When he arrived in Canada, he once again met with the Trudeaus. The trio exchanged pleasantries before proceeding to the Prime Minister's home, where Harry would be a guest until they flew to Toronto on the following day.
" I'm very happy to be able to congratulate you in person on the birth of your son. We are all thrilled for you and Eleanor.", said Justin.
" Thank you. We're both very happy. Arthur really is an incredible child and truly a blessing to us both.", said Harry smiling.
"And... we've all been shocked to hear of the recent changes as well. I'm sorry if that is a sensitive topic, but I wanted to talk to you about some bilateral projects, if I may.", said Justin.
" It's somewhat delicate but I'm happy to talk about improving the relationship between the UK and Canada.", said Harry, giving a brief smile. " But for now, let's focus on the task in hand. This year's Invictus Games.", he continued and the Prime Minister nodded his head, not touching on the subject any longer.
On the following morning, Harry flew to Toronto with the Prime Minister and his wife. He was taken in a black SUV to the Air Canada Center, where the opening and closing ceremony would held. As the car approached the venue, he could hear the music and cheer growing louder and louder. Stepping out of the car, Harry waved his hand at the public gathered. He walked backstage, alongside the Justin Trudeau and waited for his queue. As the teams filled the arena one by one, Harry watched as the speeches were made, getting emotional after each story of endurance and hardships that was shared.
" Your Royal Highness, Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to stand before you tonight and welcome our competitors to this year's Invictus Games. But before we can declare this games officially opened I'd like to say a few words. Your Royal Highness, thank you so much for your leadership, vision and strength in realising and guiding this project, which will allow so many of our brave veterans to keep moving forward and us, the opportunity to cheer them on.", said Justin and loud cheers and claps were heard from the audience.
"... and without further ado, here, to declare the Invictus Games Toronto 2017 opened, our patron and founder, Prince Harry.". Harry was then welcomed onstage and smiled at the audience.
" Hello Toronto! Merci beaucoup pour votre hospitalité. And thank you Prime Minister for this warm welcome. Invictus is about the dedication of the men and women who served their countries, confronted hardship, and refused to be defined by their injuries. Invictus is about the families and friends who faced the shock of learning that their loved ones had been injured or fallen ill - and then rallied to support them on their journey of recovery. And above all, Invictus is about the example to the world that all service men and women - injured or not - provide about the importance of service and duty. I wanted to find a way for veterans to be a beacon of light, and show us all that we have a role to play; that we all win when we respect our friends, neighbours, and communities. That's why we created Invictus. Not only to help veterans recover from their physical and mental wounds; but also to inspire people to follow their example of resilience, optimism, and service in their own lives.", said Harry.
" Sadly, my wife could not join us here since she's at home with our little one...", he said and cheers erupted from the crowd. "... but she too wanted to pass along the message of hope we all share today.", he continued and a video appeared on the screen behind him. In it, Elle was dressed in her Invictus Toronto 2017 shirt and had a little Arthur, napping on her arms, dressed in the Invictus baby grow they had been gifted a few months ago.
" Hello Toronto! Hello competitors! It saddens me not to be able to see you compete fiercely in these coming days and cheer you on as I did last year in Florida. But as you can see, I have a very small person that needs my full attention.", she joked and there was a sound of laughter from the crowd. " These games were created so that each an every one of you can see and experience change and teamwork. You are all winners for having reached this far. For cheating death and overcome emotional and physical challenges. I hope you embody the spirit of this games by showing courage and determination that will inspire generations to come. You are proving to the world that everything is possible, even under the most impossible situations. Good luck to you all!", said Elle. As the video ended, another cheer and applauses were heard and Harry grinned.
" Well, as my wife has said, I hope you are ready to inspire, to challenge, to work together, and to change your lives in the next coming days. You are Invictus! Let's get started!", he concluded, to a resounding cheer.
When Harry came back from Canada, he felt invigorated. He was ready to resume his public activities with full force. And so was Elle. With them both back at work, which had had some new additions to their normal workload since the singing of the Abdication document, Harry and Elle spent a lot of time on their engagements around London and the UK as well as working on their side projects. Elle had once again started writing her book, meeting every now and then with Melissa and Trevor to catch up and talk about academia. As for Harry, he was working on expanding Sentebale's work across other African countries.
A new Royal Tour was set for next year, on the Caribbean, which they hoped to bring their son along. Most of the times, if they’d be staying for more than a day, they’d bring Arthur with them. But he did spend a good deal of time with his grandparents, who, on both parts, doted on the little boy, dearly. Even though Charles and Camilla were estranged from Harry, Elle made a point to take baby Arthur to see them from time to time. As for her own parents, Victoria and Rupert adored babysitting their grandson and were completely at his mercy. Elle once caught her father bouncing the infant on his knee as he did with her when she was a child and it warmed her heart to see how much her son was loved by her family.
Not to mention the staff. The entire McClaire gang doted on the little boy. Brandon and Olivia were delighted to have a child on the home again and usually commented on how much they had missed the joy of children whenever Elle was around. Jane and Gregory took upon themselves to play with Arthur whenever they could. As for Margaret and Thomas, they’d school the little boy about everything around the kitchen and garden, respectively. Now that he was starting to eat solids, Maggie was particularly fond of cooking small portions of baby food for Elle to take home with her to see if Arthur would enjoy it. And it had never failed to please the infant, to the chef’s delight.
Once winter arrived, and Elle’s birthday came to pass, she received the best gift she could ever wish for: hearing Arthur properly say his first couple of words, such as mama, dada and lan, which, of course, translated to the three most import things in his life: his parents and Lancelot. He had also mastered his tummy time and could roll on it and then upwards again, as well as sitting without either Harry or Elle helping him. They had a good routine going on of naps, playtime and feeds, with now a few solids introduced as well. The new parents quickly discovered Arthur’s fondness for bananas but his distaste for papaya. Little by little, the three of them were entering new territories.
On the second week of November, Elle and Harry prepared for Remembrance Sunday, as many other members of the Royal Family. That’d be the first big and meaningful event without William and Catherine. They had moved back to Anglesey with the children and Elle had heard weekly from Kate. Dressed in a black dress and matching black hat, she stood beside Camilla, Anne, and Sophie on the balcony and watched as Her Majesty, Charles, Harry, Andrew and Edward all placed the red poppies wreath on the Cenotaph. A tear or two fell down her cheeks as she thought about all the suffering that still went on around the world; about the fight and the people, military and civilians alike that were caught in the numerous conflicts.
That day at the Cenotaph had been the first interaction Harry had had with his father since the Abdication. After the ceremony, once they were all inside, she saw them talking in hushed tones and Harry, although stone faced, was talking back to Charles and even gave a small, tight smile to his father when he showed his phone to him. Elle imagined they were talking about Arthur. On the mend… slowly, but surely., she thought observing father and son.
“ I’m so glad to see them taking again.”, said Camilla, coming to stand beside Elle. The young duchess nodded her head, agreeing with the older woman.
“ Indeed. There’s much work to be done, but the first steps have been taken.”, said Elle.
“ I hope he can do the same with his brother.”, commented Camilla. “… William… it’s been hard on him too. He misses Harry. They all do. Will you talk to him, Eleanor? See if he can, maybe, call him again?”, she asked.
“ I’ll try. I promise. I don’t like this situation anymore than you do, but Harry needs to be allowed to get over the anger and resentment he’s still feeling before he can forgive both his father and his brother.”, said Elle.
************
Long before the whole ordeal with the Abdication had come to pass, it had been decided that Harry, Elle, Arthur and Sir Lancelot would spend Christmas with her family that year, stopping by at Sandringham, to make a quick visit to the Queen and other members of the family, on Boxing Day. So when December came, Elle was more than happy to take all of the Christmas decorations from storage and start giving their apartment the very best of seasonal cheer.
As this was Arthur’s first Christmas, she had outdone herself by making sure he was featured every step of the way, dressing him in the cutest outfits: from little Elf to Rudolf, a Snowman and Father Christmas himself. Harry would often sneak on her and take several pictures of her and of Arthur and sometimes he too would get into them. The album Elle had given him years ago was filling up quickly. Soon another one would have to be bought so they could be cataloging their lives together.
When he went to their bedroom that evening to shower and change while Elle fed Arthur downstairs, he opened one of his drawers to look for that particular photo album when he saw the binder Elle had given him on their first anniversary, a few months ago. In it, there were the unopened letters she had written to him, each for a different occasion. Going through them, he found the one he was looking for: for when you feel lost. Carefully detaching it from the binder, Harry took the small envelope in his hands and opened it. Elle’s elegant penmanship came into view.
My love, my darling Harry,
If you’re reading this letter, then it means something horrible has happened in yours or our lives and you need to keep yourself grounded, to find a path to keep going forward. I may not know what it is since I’m writing this in the past with no hindsight whatsoever about the future. But, I do know that you’ll always find a way to see the light at the end of the dark tunnel. You are one of the strongest, most kind, good-hearted and positive people I know. You’ll find a way to see past whatever is troubling you because you know, deep down, that it’s not the edge of a cliff, or the end of journey. There’s so much more to be lived! You may be at a crossroads or maybe a very big challenge is what you’re facing… and although it seems like a big deal now, it will be nothing more than a little bump on your path towards a great and happy future. You can do it, Harry. You can face whatever challenge is put in front of you and you can find your path again. I hope I’m there by your side, through thick and thin, as we have vowed to each other. I hope you don’t need to read this letter because I’m going to be there by your side telling everything that is written here. But, in the case that I’m not for whatever reason or that you need to hear it again, and again, again… You can and you will be found. You will see clearer. You will overcome the darkness and the desolation you might have been feeling. Take a deep breath, focus on the good parts of your life, on the people who love and support you no matter what, find your inner strength to battle the urge to
shut everyone out… forgiven and forget, my darling. The storm is scary but it always ends. And the result is a beautiful and clear sky. You may be lost in the middle of a storm right now, but it will end. I’m sure of it.
All my love,
Elle.
Harry eyes were glossy and unshed tears threatened to fall down his cheeks as he read the letter another time. He let her words sink in his brain and heart, reassuring him yet again, that he could do the task that was set for him and that she, his wonderful wife, his marvellous Elle, would be with him, beside him, every step of the way. Sighing, Harry folded the letter and put it on his nightstand. A hot shower was in need.
He was mid shower when he heard the bathroom door open. Harry didn’t turn his back for he knew who was it. Soon, a chilly air invaded the box and a pair of arm encircled his waist. He felt Elle’s breathe on his back, her lips gently kissing his warm skin.
“ Arthur is asleep.”, she said in between pecks. He placed his hands over hers, giving it a gentle squeeze before turning his body to face her. Looking deeply into her eyes, Harry cupped her cheek and lowered his head, molding his lips against hers. They pulled each other closer, basking in the passion of the moment, as the hot water fell on their bodies. Kissing turned into touching, pressing and gasping and soon, Elle had her back against the tiles, moaning. Their love making became more and more intense, the shower long forgotten. Panting, the entangled their bodies and leaned their foreheads together, faintly smiling.
" It's been a while since we've done that, hasn't it?", said Harry, giving her his signature smirk.
" In the shower? Most definitely.", she replied chuckling. Pecking his lips, she reached for the towel and draped around her body before exiting the bathroom. Harry remained there for a few more minutes then joined an already dressed Elle in bed. He got under the covers and pulled her against him, nesting her in his arms. Gently, he began running his fingers through her hair, which earned him soft moans of content from her. In a matter of minutes, Elle was fast asleep. Harry smiled at the sight before him and placed a peck on her temple before closing his own eyes and drifting off into sleep.
************
As Christmas week came, Harry, Elle, Arthur, Lancelot, and their RPO's made their way to Woodenford Castle. Passing through the snowy fields of Wiltshire, they drove during late morning arriving at the familiar majestic site of the 13th century stone castle on early afternoon, just in time for a healthy lunch provided by Ms. Martin, the fabulous chef. As soon as they were past the gates, Elle could see her family eagerly waiting at the front door. Once the car was pulled into a stop, they jumped out of the Range Rover, took Lancelot out and pulled Arthur from his car seat, who greeted his parents with a bubbly smile. The family was soon engulfed in warm hugs and kisses on the cheek offered by Victoria, Rupert and Edward, who soon whisked his nephew away, whispering promises of fun and mischief in his ear, while Logan helped with their luggage.
" I'm so glad you're here!", said Victoria, still holding Elle's shoulders.
"We are very glad to be here.", said Elle. " Specially since it's Arthur's first Christmas. And nothing can compare to our Christmas tree...", she continued as they stepped inside. Warmth and the smell of pine and spices filled her senses, making her instantly more relaxed and happy. As they too off their coats and headed to the Drawing Room, she held her breath in excitement. And she wasn't disappointed. The 25ft Norway spruce was up, its ornaments glistening under the lights.
" Oh wow...", said Elle in wonder.
" We haven't finished decorating it yet. We know how much you love doing it.", said her father smiling. She smiled back at him and nodded her head with enthusiasm. She walked over to the with Arthur in her arms and browsed over the many different ornaments, their shapes and colours twinkling in the light, catching the infant's eyes and sparkling his curiosity. The family around them smiled lovingly at the scene and Harry even snapped a few pictures of mother and son, who seemed to be immersed in their own little bubble of Christmas cheer. They all joined in to decorated the tree. Little by little, the magnificent decor was complete. Harry snuck behind Elle and warped his arms around her, pulling her and Arthur close to him.
" Now this... is what I call a proper Christmas tree.", he said in her ear.
" Couldn't agree more.", she replied, turning her head to the side and pecking his lips. They smiled to each other then looked down at Arthur who was looking amazed at every little thing around him. Elle kissed his chubby cheeks and Harry tickled his belly, earning them both a giggle from the toddler. His smile, a toothy one now, lit up the room. It was contagious and made everyone else smile too.
For the next few days, Elle and Harry took the time away from the city to decompress and have a few dates, just the two of them. Since the snow wasn't deep and they decided to take the horses for a small walk near the river. Bundled up in puffer jackets and very warm mittens and caps, they walked over to the stables, greeting the familiar faces they saw on their way.
" Ahh Lionheart.", said Elle stepping close to her horse's stall. He neighed and threw his mane around, reaching for her hand. She chuckled and caressed his nose. "I've missed you too, buddy.", she said to him. Harry was given Percival to ride, just like on the first time he had been to Woodenford, all those years ago when they reconnected.
They saddled up their horses and slowly trotted side by side, the chilly breeze cutting through their skin, making theirs cheeks red. "Race you to the river.", he said to her and galloped past her. Elle chuckled, remembering how she was the one to do the same last time they did that. She soon caught up with him and they laughed to each other as they reached the riverbank together.
" Even with a head start, you can't seem to beat me, Major.", she said, winking and grinning at him.
" What can I say, you've always been better at it than me...", he replied. Harry then got off his horse, tying him to a nearby tree. He then helped Elle out of her horse and did the same. Elle then picked up the the small basket with water and sandwiches she had brought and hand in hand, they walked to a stone bench that overlooked the river. Sipping on their bottles and nibbling on their snacks, they quietly observed the flow of the water and the breeze on the pine trees, listening to the sounds of the nature around them. Snuggling up to him, Elle sighed happily.
" Feels so good to be here, in the peace and quiet after the months we've had, doesn't it?", she said.
" It really does.", replied Harry. " Sometimes I can't believe all that has happened to us...", he continued, holding her close, playing with her wedding ring.
" I know, darling. It's been a crazy couple of year, filled with good and bad things, and we've faced them all together.", said Elle, looking up at him.
" I have no idea what I'd have done without you by my side, Elle.", he said cupping her cheek. "You bring out the best in me. You're my saving grace and shining light at the end of a dark and rocky road.", he finished.
" Oh Harry...", she whispered, smiling gently at him, teary eyed after his declaration. Leaning in, she pulled him closer and brought his lips towards hers. They kissed slowly, savouring the moment, but eagerness and passion flowed through their mouths and soon they were feeling much hotter than before. Once they finally pulled away from each other in need of breath, they rested their foreheads together, breathing in and out, eyes closed, feeling the heat coming from one another's bodies.
************
On Christmas Eve, the family gathered in the Great Hall of the castle for the Foundation brunch. A tradition that her parents had started as a way of thanking the staff and key members of the community who are a part of the Duke and Duchess' foundation. Cassandra was there and was delighted into meeting the new addition to the family. As were a few other staff members, coordinators and representatives of the small associations connected to the Foundation. Harry was soon whisked away by some veterans that he had met before while Elle was engrossed in talking to new mothers and their children about the literacy projects she had been developing and the work that had been done in the county. At dusk, they took part in a soup kitchen, delivering food and blankets to the homeless and less fortunate of Salisbury.
" I think that doing this, helping other people, really shows what Christmas is all about.", commented Elle as they gave out blankets to the people. Harry smiled at her and placed a kiss on her temple.
When finally came time for dinner, they returned to the castle for the much anticipated festivities. Dressed in a burgundy red dress and black pumps Elle patiently fed Arthur while Harry took shower. With only a towel around his waist, he come out of the shower and gave her a peck on the lips, walking towards the closet to get dressed. Smirking, Elle bit her lips and settled Arthur on his Moses basket. She tiptoed to the closet, finding her husband wearing only his underwear. Sneakily encircled her arms around his waist, running her hands up and down his torso, leaving a trail of kisses along his back and neck. Harry groaned and she smirked to herself, nibbling his earlobe.
" Someone's in a mood...", he said huskily.
" Oh darling... you have no idea what awaits you later tonight...", she whispered back, before leaving him alone in the closet.
" Looking forward to it... you tease!", he said, catching sight of her wink and smirk towards him just as she exited the room. Shaking his head, Harry dressed quietly, feeling a little discomfort on his trousers. That little temptress..., he thought. He heard her talking to Arthur and soon he was all alone in their room, which gave him plenty of time to get her gift from his suitcase. Smiling to himself as he looked at it, he pocked it and left the room as well, rushing down the stairs to meet the rest of the family.
The McClaire family was gathered in the Hall, the Christmas tree sparkling bright and under it, a selection of different sized boxes, mostly filled with toys and clothes for Arthur no doubt. The table was set with candlelight and ornaments along its length; a selection of roasts and mashes filled them all and warmed their bodies. At the stroke of midnight, the clinked their glasses in cheerful and joyful harmony, wishing each other a very happy Christmas. Once dinner was over, they pulled crackers and in a selections of colourful paper crowns, gave each other their gifts. As predicted, Arthur was spoiled to bits by their grandparents and uncle. Her parents exchanged comical gifts such as a new pair of glasses for her father and a new crocheting kit for her mother. Her brother gave everyone gift cards to Waterstones, which pleased most of them. Elle and Harry gave them framed pictures of Arthur with each family member, which brought her mother to tears. Finally, it was their time to exchange gifts.
" Mine is a little bit late, but with everything that has been going on, I thought it was actually fitting to give it to you now.", said Harry handing Elle a small, squared package. She tore the paper and inside she found the familiar red box with the logo of the House of Garrard in golden letters. She carefully opened it, finding an eternity band ring, surrounded by tiny diamonds. Picking it up, she noticed that on the inside that was something engraved: Little Bear it read and she looked up at her husband with misty eyes.
" I wanted to give you that for a long time but...", said Harry. Elle smiled and shook her head. "No, no... it's perfect timing... oh Harry... it's beautiful. Thank you.", she said, pecking his lips. She then reached to her side to give him his present. Similar to her own, it was wrapped in a square brown paper. He, like her, tore it to pieced and found a small circular container.
Opening the lid, he chuckled and looked at her. Elle smiled and waited for his reaction. He took the silver and leather bracelet from it and payed closer attention to the marks on it:
51°31'02.0"N 0°10'23.0"W, 19.04.17. Harry instantly knew what it meant.
" It seems I'm gonna start a collection with these ones...", he joked, pointing out to the bracelet. Elle chuckled and smiled.
" Well... it's only fitting since you have one for every part place in our shared history.", said Elle.
" I love it. Thank you, my love.", he said, kissing her cheek.
That night, once everyone was asleep and Arthur was properly placed on her old bedroom which had been converted into a nursery, Elle kept her promise to Harry. She teased him, and toyed with him until he had enough of it and pushed her against the wall, on the bed, in the shower, and on the floor. They released all their bottled up tension making passionate love to each other again and again.
************
On the very early ours of Boxing Day, they made the four-hour journey from Salisbury to Sandringham. With a sleepy Arthur in the back and Ingrid beside him, they drove to the familiar red bricked estate.
" Are you ready to see them?", asked Elle.
" I am. Do I still feel hurt? Yes. Am I going to wallow in it? No. I think I should, no, need to move forward. For my own sake.", replied Harry. Nodding her head, Elle smiled and took her hand in hers, joining their fingers.
" It will be great. And we'll start mending bridges by greeting them properly, alright?", said Elle, and Harry nodded his head in agreement. They parked outside and were greeted by William, Catherine and a very sleepy looking George. Taking a step forward, Harry smiled gently and embraced his brother.
" Hi Will. Happy Christmas.", he said. William, who was a little shocked, embraced his brother back and smiled widely at him.
" Happy Christmas, Harry.", he replied then hugged Elle as well.
" Hello all. Merry Christmas!", said Kate, hugging them. " Had a pleasant trip?", she asked.
" It was pleasant enough. Not much traffic at this hour.", replied Harry.
" How was Christmas at Woodenford? I don't think I've been there since we were teenagers.", said William.
" Oh it was great. You know hoe my mother is with decorations... Arthur was delighted to see everything.", said Elle smiling at her brother-in-law.
" I wonder where Elle gets the crazy Christmas fever from...", said Harry and the adults chuckled. The light atmosphere was enough to settle the animosities and bring back, a little of he camaraderie and love that was severed between the brothers. The sleeping toddler on her arms twitched a bit and they rushed inside, to warm themselves up. Once there, they were greeted by the rest of the family who were about to get breakfast. Charles and Camilla were among the first ones to greet them. Cautiously, Charles approached Harry.
" Son... Merry Christmas.", said Charles, smiling faintly. Harry smiled back and took a step forward to hug his father. Elle could see that Charles was visibly relieved to be hugged by his younger son.
" We're delighted that you've come here.", said Camilla, greeting them with hugs and kisses. " Would you like to have breakfast with us?", she asked. Famished as they were, they joined in and Arthur was soon whisked away from Elle's arms and passed along cousins and doting family members.
" Oh he's so big!", commented Anne smiling.
" He's gonna be a tall lad!", said Edward.
" I reckon he's gonna go into the family tradition and join the military.", said Andrew.
" Now now, he's not even a year old. Let the poor baby be.", said Bea.
The banter and conversation flew joyously and Elle took the time to look around the room. Elizabeth and Philip were still absent but, considering the time, she thought they would both be changing for church. Soon enough, they appeared on the doorstep and smiled at the sight of the new arrivals.
" About time you got here, boy. Lost your way, ye?", joked Philip.
" Let us see the baby...", said Elizabeth, taking Arthur into her arms. The baby cooed and smiled at his great grandmother. "Oh he's just as adorable as I remembered.", she said., making his parents beam with pride. " Oh, that reminds me... I have something for him. Come with me you two.", she said pointing to Harry and Elle. Following her into the living room where the Christmas tree was, she handed them a rectangular box. Opening it, they found a glass bobble with Arthur's name in it, surrounded by glittering green specks.
" Now he has one too.", said the monarch. " We've hanged yours now you can put his next to them.", she continued. Smiling to the older woman, Elle took the ornament and looked around the tree to find hers and Harry's names, placing his it just under theirs.
" Now the tree is complete.", said Elizabeth.
" Indeed, it is. Family should stick together... and I'm happier than I can possibly say to have you here, my dears.", she continued looking at the small family in front of her.

Dragon Ball Z 167
There’s about nine or ten days left before the Cell Games. Dr. Brief is busy working on fixing Android 16. He has specs from Dr. Gero’s lab, but they’re for android 17, and 16 has a completely different design, because 16 is truly an android, and not a cyborg like 17. Meanwhile, 16 plays with Dr. Brief’s cat. I’m not sure if it’s safe for the kitty to lick so close to 16′s open wound, but I’m not a robot or a robot doctor or a cat, so what do I know?
Bulma’s mom serves up cake. Eat, drink, and be merry, I guess.
Oolong and Roshi start stuffing their gross fingers into the cakes to claim them, and it’s pretty friggin’ gross. Seriously, I’ve seen Frieza cut in half, but this scene is what really bothers me. Those two can’t even eat that much cake anyway, so it’s just disgusting. Chi-Chi is right to want to keep Gohan away from them.
The others all chill out and watch TV. This looks like a pretty cozy scene.
I really want to know what the deal is with this show.
Vegeta can’t sit on the floor like everyone else because he’s the PRINSUVOLLSAYINS or whatever.
Yamcha gets restless and decides to go outside to train for Cell. Krillin offers to join him, and then Vegeta gives them shit for being no match for Cell. Yamcha reminds Vegeta that he’s no match for Cell either, so maybe he ought to keep his mouth shut. Yamcha’s like “Yeah, welcome to our world.” And Krillin starts chanting “One of us, one of us.”
Then Bulma arrives, having returned from Kami’s Lookout, and she’s all anxious to see how Future Trunks is doing, to the point where she crashes into these guys.
This whole part right here just bugs me. I don’t like how Vegeta gets lumped into a comedy gag like this. Why wouldn’t he just move out of the way? Or simply murder Bulma before she could get near? That’s kind of his bit, isn’t it? Also, I don’t really see Bulma being this kind of character. Chi-Chi, sure, but not Bulma. It just feels off.
She calms down once she knows Future Trunks is okay, and then Baby Trunks grabs onto his hair. Everyone laughts. Well, not Vegeta.
Never mind that shit! Here comes Cell!
This whole scene fucking rules. Cell just smashes his way into a city, makes a giant hole in a TV studio, and when he puts his hand on the reception desk, it deforms as his hand moves towards it. I’d call this Big General Zod Energy, except General Zod wasn’t anywhere near this cool in Superman II.
He asks where they film the TV that gets broadcast all over the world, and the frightened receptionist tells him that he needs Studio B on the top floor. Cell just floats straight up and the floors rip open as he moves towards them. None of that elevator nonsense like in Movie 7. Cell just goes where he wants, how he wants.
Back at Capsule Corp, Yamcha slips on Krilin’s bald head. Vegeta’s probably watching them from the window. “They’re right,” he thinks to himself as he watches Yamcha plant his bare feet into Krillin’s face. “I’m one of them now.”
Meanwhile, Roshi watches aerobics girls on TV, and I guess in Dragon World they film that shit live, because Cell floats up into the studio and ruins the shot.
They change it to a cooking show, and he’s there too.
Then they switch it to... I guesss this is some sort of stage musical? I don’t understand how TV works in this world. They filmed all of these shows in the same building, live, and aired them on three separate channels?
I don’t know what this was supposed to be, but it’s not shown from Bulma’s TV, so maybe this one was being taped.
Finally, he ends up at Studio B, and smashes through the anchorman’s desk.
Hyperbolic Time Chamber Update: Gohan has a nightmare about Cell killing Chi-Chi and Piccolo right in front of him. Holy shit! How does he know what Cell looks like? How did Goku know what the androids and Vegeta were doing while he was laid up with the heart virus?
I was telling a friend of mine how this liveblog is helping me recalibrate for the fanfic I’m writing. I didn’t think I needed it, but this helps me remember what it is I’m trying to work from. I gave my Super Saiyan OC a lot of reasons to have trouble sleeping, and at times, I felt like that was kind of dumb and cliche. But now I realize why I did that in the first place. Nightmares and sleepless nights are par for the course for Super Saiyans. The only reason we don’t see Trunks having bizarre prophetic nightmares is because he grew up in one. Showing him sleeping poorly seems kind of redundant, you know?
Turns out, Gohan had a fever, which isn’t too surprising, considering the extreme conditions of this place. Once again, Gohan apologizes for not being good enough or strong enough to live up to the expectations he has for himself, but Goku’s totally cool about this. Goku’s been there, after all. More importantly, Gohan is far, far stronger than Goku ever was at his age. To put this into perspective, Gohan probably just now turned 11. Goku was 12 when Bulma first met him. As much as Gohan looks up to his dad, I think the reverse applies too.
Goku tries to tuck him in, and Gohan murmurs something about his desire to protect the others. Gohan’s laser focused on this. He may not enjoy fighting, but he’s completely devoted to the mission.
Back to business, Cell is here on TV to announce his new tournament, the Cell Games. First he introduces himself as the monster who killed all those people in Gingertown, Nickytown, and elsewhere. He says he no longer needs to feed on people, but he will be kicking the ass of everyone who shows up at his tournament in nine days.
Is that Piccolo’s TV, or Tien’s? Either way, I find it hilarious.
Basically, the Cell Game only resembles the Tenkaichi Budokai in the sense that you can lose by giving up, or by falling out of the ring. Otherwise, it’s a very different format. Instead of an elimination bracket, it’s a gauntlet match. Cell stands in the ring, and fights each competitor. If he wins, the next guy steps up and he fights that guy, and so on. The idea is to see how many of these fights Cell can win in a row with no time to rest. In theory, the more fighters who show up, the better chance of them wearing Cell down.
Perhaps most critically, lethal force is not illegal, as Chi-Chi speculated. If Cell kills you, you lose, not him. Frankly, that just makes sense. In the Tenkaichi Budokai, the idea was to defeat your opponent, not murder him, so lethal force would get you disqualified.
But the Cell Games are for the fate of the Earth. If Cell wins, he plans to kill everyone on the planet. So why should he spare his opponents? Why should he disqualify himself if he accidentally kills an opponent?
On the flip side, why should his opponents worry about killing him? If there was a no-kill rule, and Goku managed to kill Cell, that would technically make Cell the winner, but who would care? Also, what would happen if Goku managed to beat Cell by ringout? Would Cell abide by the rules? He never really explained what would happen if he lost. I assume he just didn’t see that as a possibility, or maybe he expected his opponents to try to kill him no matter what, so it wasn’t important.
I’m not the kind of Cell fan who spends a lot of time looking for ways he could reform, although I do feel like it’s a shame that he couldn’t see the value of sparing the Earth and making the Cell Games a regular thing. Like, let’s say he held this competition, and he survives to the end, win or lose. Wouldn’t it make sense to stage a followup tournament for next year? If the Saiyans could give him good sport twice, why not a third time? And then the Cell Games just becomes this annual event where everyone gets together to see how many fights this bug man can win.
But the reality is that Cell’s too big a dick for that. His perfect form was built on thousands of innocent victims, and his tournament ring is sitting on top of farmland owned by a guy her murdered. He killed that news anchor right before he announced this game, and he closes his announcement by blowing up part of the city he’s in. Yeah, Cell loves fighting, and you might talk him into doing Cell Games II next year, but he also loves terrorizing helpless people, and he’d be doing that for the entire year until the next event. I suppose this is what sets him apart from Vegeta and Piccolo.
Anyway, everyone is suitably terrified by Cell’s announcement. Cell is the first villain to announce his presence to the world since King Piccolo conquered it over a decade ago. The Saiyan invasion was known to the world, but there was very little understanding of what was going on. Goku’s role in that battle never made it to the news media, and the other Z-Fghters who did get televised all died in battle. To the world at large, they just knew that East City got destroyed by aliens, then there was a battle in some remote location, a bunch of martial artists and camera crews died, and then the aliens were gone.
This is something that’s always interested me about Dragon Ball, because I’m used to comic book universes where the main heroes and their adventures are well known to the public. I guess Superman was sort of the origin of that whole idea, since he worked for a newspaper, and he was such a powerful character that it was big news whenever he did anything, even in secret. In some of Superman’s earliest outings, he seemed very interested in keeping a low profile, like he didn’t even want people to know he existed, but the costume sort of undermined that idea. Eventually, he settled into the formula of being a public figure, and then writing about his own adventures as Clark Kent.
Other superhero franchises have followed that premise, although it gets kind of strained in places. If Mr. Fantastic invented a flying car years ago, why does everyone in Marvel still use real world technology? A lot of fantasy worlds try to sidestep that problem by having the super-powered characters exist in secret. Harry Potter’s whole deal is that wizards are real, and they have a whole secret society going on under the nose of the rest of the world, although it’s not very clear why they felt it so important to do this in the first place. The real reason is that J.K. Rowling wanted Harry to grow up in a normal household, instead of some parallel world where everyone knows magic is real.
Dragon Ball sort of tries to have it both ways. It’s mostly like the real world, but it can have advanced technology like the Hoi-Poi capsules and hovercars, and then there’s remote parts of the world where they don’t have those things. Trucks with wheels are still a thing, probably because Toriyama likes to draw real cars and made-up cars and he saw no reason to have to choose. As for Goku, he just goes in, whips ass, and leaves. If there’s media attention for his actions, so be it, but he’s not interested in it, so he doesn’t pursue it. One day the Red Ribbon Army got wiped out, and the world has no idea how or why. One day, King Piccolo got taken down, and the world found out about it, but they knew almost nothing about the boy who did the job. One day, Vegeta got sent packing, but he eventually came back, and no one knows who he is, or what happened in between.
And Goku’s fine with that. He sees no point in giving press conferences, or explaining What Just Happened to the rest of the people. He’s a very minor celebrity for participating in the Tenkaichi Budokai competitions, but only hardcore martial arts fans would have heard of him. I’m a pro wrestling fan, but I’d have to look up the last three winners of the G1.
And maybe this is one reason I dig this show so much. Over the years, western comic books have gotten increasingly mired in pointless details. You look at the new Spider-Man movie that’s coming up, and the general idea seems to be that Spider-Man needs Nick Fury to tell him what to do. That’s how the comics have been for decades now. These days you can’t be a superhero without some government agent telling you which way to pull up your tights. It’s bullshit, but the writers think it’s more “realistic” that way. Come to think of it, pro wrestling fell into the same trap a while back. It used to be that you’d turn on wrestling and they’d just show a bunch of matches, and it was taken for granted that some unseen authority booked the card. Now every American wrestling promotion has to waste time on all these in-story CEO’s, general managers, commissioners, and assistant general managers, and they all argue over which of them outranks the other. It’s dumb. Just let them fight. Dragon Ball’s gonna let them fight.

Yuzuru Hanyu’s “wife” and Shoma Uno’s “big brother”
Yuzuru Hanyu’s “wife” and Shoma Uno’s “big brother”
Reporters and federation personnel comment on Keiji’s relationships with Shoma and Yuzuru in an article by women’s magazine “Prime”
03/06/2018
As Yuzuru Hanyu’s “wife” and Shoma Uno’s “big brother,” Keiji Tanaka has been supportive of both skaters
Yuzuru Hanyu achieved the first consecutive Olympic victory in 66 years. After an injury sustained in November of last year demanded a full-time recovery period, he had to pull off a winning performance at the last minute in Pyeongchang.
“His short program just blew off everyone’s concerns. Although he had flawed landings in the free skate, overall it was a performance where you couldn’t tell if he was injured. He got more cheers than anyone else, he was the center of the attention and his performance was the highlight. He showed he really is the ‘absolute king.’” ( – sports columnist)
As Nathan Chen, who had risen up as a worthy opponent, fell victim to the so-called “Olympic demon,” another Japanese ace, Shoma Uno was able to overcome his nerves.
“His short program was perfect. Then, up to the last moments of the free skate when he should have been feeling the most nervous, he landed all the combination jumps and captivated the audience.” ( – same sports columnist)
Third place in the SP Uno ended up beating second place Javier Fernandez in a sudden reversal. The world shook with excitement at the double-punch victory.
In the free skate, Keiji Tanaka recovered from his mistakes in the short program and was able to climb up the ranking.
“He hasn’t been able to land many quads in the big competitions, but he landed the opening quad salchow in the free skate, so that really showed his determination. His quads have been in good shape since he got here, so it’s too bad that he made mistakes when it came time to perform. But he got positive grades of execution on the other elements, so it was a beautiful performance.” ( – same sports columnist)
Compared to Uno and Hanyu, who are big stars, many may not think Tanaka has a strong presence, but he has actually been a big supporter of both skaters.
“They may be rivals in the competitions, but they are very good friends. They have a wonderful effect on each other. Off the ice, Tanaka is the one with the most common sense, so he takes on the role of supporting and taking care of the other two.” ( – skating federation staff member)
Tanaka’s now main practice rink is in the Hyogo prefecture nowadays, and he’s becoming a very good leader to the young skaters there.
Shoma sits on Keiji’s lap
“On days-off and such, he will take 2-3 younger skaters to a public bathhouse. He’s very good at taking care of them. At the end of last year, he went back to the rink in Kurashiki, his hometown, and that was around the same time that the Olympic representatives were announced. He was surrounded by little kids, so he seems to be very popular.” ( – same federation staff member)
Tanaka is not just popular with little kids, but he’s also like a big brother to Uno, who’s 3 years younger than him.
“When they were juniors, Uno-kun would stick to Tanaka-kun like glue, following him around everywhere. When they would share a room at away tournaments, Uno-kun was not used to those kinds of trips, so you’d even see Tanaka-kun teaching Uno-kun how to do laundry. Uno’s coach would be embarrassed, saying to him, “Sorry for hassling you all the time.” And Tanaka-kun would puff up his chest and say, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.” I think he was more like a reliable father than an older brother (laugh)” ( – sports writer)
At nights when they can’t go home after competing, they stay up playing Yu-gi-oh! card games. It seems the meeting place is almost always Tanaka Keiji’s hotel room.
“Tanaka likes to keep everything clean, and apparently he keeps his room very cozy and neat. (laugh). After the free skate at the 2016 Four Continents, Uno went over to Tanaka in the waiting room and just quietly sat on his lap. They showed that on TV. It really did look like a father and his son.” ( – previously mentioned sports columnist)
It appears that the main reason Tanaka feels compelled to take care of Uno is that he’s “an eccentric kid.”
“He likes skating too much – so much so that I don’t think he has any interest in anything else. He’s also rather child-like at times, like the fact that the only food he likes is meat and he only eats vegetable a few times a year.” ( – previously mentioned federation staff member)
Since Uno was called a prodigy from a very young age, it’s possible he has certain sensitivities ordinary people don’t have. Takahiro-san (?), an employee at the Nagoya sports center, remembers seeing Uno step onto the ice rink for the first time.
“It was when Shoma was 3 years old. At that age, usually they can only skate if they’re holding their parent’s hand. But he just immediately stepped onto the ice and started walking smoothly. I even went ‘Eh?!” in a loud voice. Because he wasn’t afraid of the ice at all.” ( – Takahiro-san)
The famous story is that Mao Asada also saw this and was enamored with Uno, saying, “You should start doing figure skating!”
“He was a child so he would cry when he made a mistake, but he would still keep doing his utmost. He was very competitive. When he finished kindergarten or elementary school, he would come over every day and skate until 6pm. After that, he started training with his own team. Even now when I see him practicing silently, it doesn’t look like he’s changed since then.” ( – Takahiro-san)
Being indifferent toward anything except his performance must be a consequence of the figure skating lifestyle. When he was asked about the Pyeonchang Olympics in the 2015 Four Continents, he said, “Is Pyeongchang in Korea?”
“It seems he really didn’t know. In the Grand Prix season, when he has a packed schedule filled with competitions one after the other, he’ll ask, ‘Where am I going next again?’” ( – previously mentioned skating federation staff member)
That is the kind of person whom an older brother figure like Tanaka can’t help looking after.
Playing the role of a wife
It’s not just the younger skater, Uno, who has come to rely on Tanaka, but also Hanyu, who is the same age. As three skaters of the same generation, Tanaka, Hanyu, and Hino Ryuju have been growing and developing alongside one another.
“When they were little, every competition was different and they kept swapping places at the podium. So they would all take turns being frustrated. The jumping practice was already a competition. I think it would be something like, ‘If that guy can do that jump, I have to do it, too!’ Even the jump that everyone struggles with – the triple axel – those three learned very quickly. I feel like when one spots the other at an event, they immediately go to each other. When they were high schoolers, they’d have an arm around each other’s shoulders. And with Tanaka-san being kind of tall, Hanyu-san would be tucked under his armpit.” ( – same skating federation staff member)
So, to an outsider, they’d look just like a couple. Hanyu has said about Tanaka, “To me, he is like a wife.” Apparently he meant that Tanaka is someone with whom he feels at ease.
When at Hanyu’s side…
“Just like his nickname ‘the absolute king’ would indicate, Hanyu-kun tends to be a hard person to approach. But he is a lot more talkative than you’d expect. Tanaka-kun is just the opposite – he’s the silent type. So, with Hanyu-kun usually doing the talking, Tanaka-kun is just going, “Yeah, yeah,” and “Really?” He mostly takes on the listener’s role. Hanyu-kun’s a very quick-thinking person, so the pace of the conversation tends to be quick as well. But since they’ve known each other so long, Tanaka-kun is not taken aback by how quickly he talks, and I think that must make Hanyu-kun feel at ease.” ( – sports writer)
Being different types actually seems to be the reason that they are comfortable around each other.
“Hanyu did not take part in the team competition, so he arrived at the arena after the others. At the official practice, where everyone from the press corps to the people from the rivals’ teams were all trying gauge what condition he was in after his injury, he was drawing a lot of attention. In that tense atmosphere, the one who was always at Hanyu’s side was Tanaka.” ( – previously mentioned sports columnist)
Maybe the fact that Hanyu did not bring his lucky item with him to Pyeongchang was part of his anxiety.
“The Pooh-san tissue box that he’s always holding was considered brand promotion, so it was not allowed. So he brought a ‘shortcake’ tissue box instead. Just seeing him with the Pooh-san box is a comfort. But I think that having a familiar face like Tanaka-san there by his side made him feel less helpless.” ( – previously mentioned skating federation staff member)
Having a helpful, reliable person like Tanaka watching out for them made it easier for Uno and Hanyu to display their maximum strength there.
“Of course, Hanyu and Uno are both skaters who each have plenty of their own strength. And it’s not like they have a combative relationship, but I think that for any competitor, there is a lot of tension in the atmosphere just before it’s time to perform. But because Tanaka was there, I think they were able to relax around each other.” ( – same skating federation staff member)
Of course, one assumes the presence of his two trusted friends also helped Tanaka to do his best at his current level. And there is no doubt that the great performances showed by them will serve to inspire the next generation of great male figure skaters.
“A long time ago, it was a rate of about 1 in 10 boys, now it’s about 1 in 5. Daisuke Takahashi and Takahiko Kozuka also made an impact a little while ago, and gradually this rate has been increasing, but I think Uno-kun is also having a great effect.” ( – Takahiro-san)
It’s possible the day will come when Uno will also show the same kind of affection to a junior he was showed by a senior like Tanaka. The “little brothers” who achieved great results must surely feel the effects.

Dragon Warrior II: Finally, A Real Plot
Circe here! After a bit of a break, I've dived into Dragon Warrior II to see what it's all about. What's different? What's the same? That's what we're here to talk about today.
The first thing that immediately sticks out is that this game has an actual opening cutscene, rather than just a quick explanation of your quest and a shove out the door. It even has an expository text crawl, which I find a bit silly, but endearing. The plot is basically this: generations later, in a continent across the sea from Alefgard (the land where Dragon Warrior takes place) the evil wizard bad guy Hargon is launching an attack with an army of monsters. His army attacks the kingdom of Moonbrooke, killing the king and forcing his daughter to flee. A single soldier escapes, traveling to the kingdom of Midenhall to convey the news of the invasion. I play the prince of Midenhall, and the king tells me that I have the blood of the legendary hero Erdrick, and so I must venture out to save the world. What's more, I must seek the aid of two other descendants of Erdrick, the princess of Moonbrooke and the prince of another neighboring kingdom, Cannock. With that, I'm left to my own devices to seek out my allies and defeat Hargon.
So yeah, it's simple, but it's got a fully scripted cutscene and, to be honest, pretty well-written dialogue. NES games are infamous for their horribly translated writing, and even into the SNES era, Enix's big competitor Square was still giving their games a localization budget of three dimes and a bit of pocket lint. As much as I have a deep and enduring love of Final Fantasy 4, its original translation is an embarrassment, and even moreso when I find out that Enix was actually making an effort on their second Dragon Quest game. Now, I can't make any claim on the accuracy of the translation, but the dialogue reads well, and the flowery old-timey language gives the game flavor. I'm no longer reluctant to describe major NPCs as characters. The game manages to hit some basic emotional beats as well, like when the king of Moonbrooke sacrifices himself so his daughter can get away.
The game also gives you clear intermediate goals from the get-go, and while I kinda found Dragon Warrior's open-endedness endearing, I think I have to chalk this up as a definite improvement. And on that note, my first order of business was to try and figure out where Moonbrooke and Cannock were. I travel to the west and find the town of Leftwyne, where helpful NPCs point me towards Moonbrooke to the west, and Cannock to the north. There's something vague and weird about using a monolith to find Moonbrooke, so I take the simpler-sounding option and head north to Cannock.
When I arrive, I find that the prince has already left to the east towards a cave housing the Spring of Bravery, which I suppose is pretty self-explanatory. It's a simple introductory dungeon without much in it, and at the spring I am told that the prince of Cannock has, again, left already, for Midenhall Castle. Starting to get an idea of where this is going, I trudge back to my starting point and ask my father if he's spotted the prince of Cannock anywhere. He tells me that I just missed him, and he left for Midenhall looking for me. After a few moments of confusion, I sheepishly realized that Midenhall must be a town near Midenhall Castle that I had somehow not found yet. And I'm still looking, so this is where my quest leaves me right now, having gone in a big circle. Not that I'm too put out about it...it seems like a clear excuse to familiarize the player with the surrounding region.
So that's plot. Now let's touch on mechanics. There's been some minor UI improvements, but overall it's pretty similar to the first game. It has begun the process of shedding its early, clunky interface elements, a process which I assume will continue from game to game. The big difference, though, is that the game now has a party system. The prince of Cannock and the princess of Moonbrooke will eventually become party members, finally giving us control over a group of adventurers. The enemies now appear in groups as well, as you'd probably expect. There is one downside though, at least for now. The protagonist seems unable to learn magic, now that that role has been offloaded to other characters. This means that you have to defeat monsters by hitting them one at a time, which is very slow. This phase of the game will not last very long, but between my stubborn attempts at mapping the world and the game stringing along the promise of a second party member, it's starting to get a little bit annoying. The encounter rate also doesn't seem to have improved, which doesn't help. It's perhaps no surprise that this game has opened up fairy water as a regular shop item (which, if you recall from the first game, repels weak encounters for a certain number of steps). The only thing keeping me from buying it is early game frugality.
The game also has to be commended for having a bigger variety of enemies. The early game enemies aren't especially distinct from each other, but the variety is nice, especially when Dragon Warrior leaned very heavily on recolors (probably due to memory constraints, but I haven't looked into how much memory each game has). Overall, it's a marked improvement over the original in almost every way, but it still leaves a lot of the free wandering that characterized the first game, which I like, especially since it gives me a reason to keep drawing maps. We'll see how many games deep I get before that becomes unfeasible. The game also introduces some compelling early mysteries on the world map, like multiple regions beyond the water, and at least one teleporter that seems to just drop you on a tiny, empty island. There's a lot to dig into here, so all I can do now is just continue on and see what the game has in store.

PlayStation Plus September 2021 Games Leaked
Sony’s PlayStation Plus created to compete against Xbox Live is making rounds again because of the amazing game line-up that are to be included under the service. Let us look at the list that includes the leaked PlayStation Plus games for the month of September 2021.
For those of you who do not know about this service, PlayStation Plus allows the subscribers to have access and enjoy a variety of assorted titles for a monthly fee. Every month they add in some more titles to be experienced by their players. The games included may be smaller games like The Plants vs Zombies or mega thrillers like The Resident Evil VII.
The following list includes the leaked PlayStation Plus games for the month of September 2021.
· Hitman 2
This Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment hit is one of the best stealth-type games to ever exist. Rendering the thrill in the chaos and action, Hitman 2 has been a hit ever since its launch in 2018. This assassination thriller has been included among the free games that will feature in the PlayStation Plus September edition. It is the second instalment in the assassination trilogy and the seventh instalment in the overall Hitman series.
The story follows the original arc from the first instalment and brings back Agent 47 who is a genetically modified assassin. He is hunting down the ‘Shadow Client’ and their group who are trying to bring down the Province (Secret organisation that controls the world affairs). However, after the big revelation, Agent 47 and his handler decides to switch sides and help find Province leaders.
Agent 47 has gone down in history as one of the most iconic video game characters to ever exist. Speaking about which, the Hitman 3 i.e., the final instalment in the assassination series came out not too long. And playing it on our new PlayStation 5 was an experience on its own.
· Overcooked! All you can eat
This stressful yet fun game is the best way to end your week with your family and friends. The family-friendly PlayStation Plus game is the best source of entertainment if you are looking for something light yet challenging.
Overcooked! All you can eat is the remastered version of the previous two instalments – Overcooked 1 and Overcooked 2. Don’t worry, the team has also released extra content for the same. This game has now introduced cross-play as a part of instalments its gameplay where four players must coordinate and prepare, cook as well as serve the customers and orders in the stipulated amount of time.
The story starts with the world in chaos literally with fire everywhere and huge asteroids hitting the surface of the earth. Our team of chefs along with the Onion King watch the terrible scene unfold in front of their eyes through a roof kitchen. Soon after, the main source or the reason behind this chaos- the spaghetti monster appears in front of the chefs and demands them to cook and feed him. Despite all their talent, hard work and efforts they are unable to satiate the monster’s hunger. The Onion king steps in and opens up a time portal that takes the chefs away from the present apocalyptic world to the past. Specifically to the year 1993. There they are tasked to travel and cook to prepare themselves for the apocalypse and the Spaghetti monster.
The audio and visuals of the game are quite impressive. The load time of this game is another cool aspect about this game. Overall, this new version has 3 new chefs with 7 new levels included in the 200 levels, assist mode, awesome rewards and achievements and so much more.
· Predator: Hunter Grounds:
This one is one of the few that Sony decided to publish on both the PC and PS4 during its initial launch. As it is rumoured to be launched as a free game in the Sony PlayStation plus game service, fans are in for a sure thrilling ride.
To give you a straightforward introduction of the same, Predator is a multi-player shooting adventure thriller game for anyone who loves shooting games a tad bit more than the other genres.
This game just like its predecessor is developed by Illfonic. It features Jake Busey and Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising their roles as Sean Keyes and Alan ‘Dutch’ Schafer. The main objective of this game is to complete the various paramilitary tasks and operations assigned to you and your team before the Predator hunts every one of you down. The game was launched recently in April 2020 and now is being included under the ever-growing PlayStation Plus game titles.
The video game gives you and your friend to choose a character to control. Four players can form a group of special ops team known as the Fireteam Voodoo. And one another player can play as the Predator who tries to eliminate the entire team. The game is extensively set in wild jungle locations. Originally the special ops team were after a drug lord which then forced them to fight the Predator.
Overall
So, basically, a stealth assassination thriller, a light cooking entertainer and a shooting adventure game are all on the list of September 2021 PlayStation Plus games. All of the above-mentioned games are free to play for all the Plus members from 7th September to 4th October.
We think overall, Sony’s PlayStation Plus is doing quite good considering the number of subscriptions that dipped after the Covid 19 lockdowns were eased across the world. The company has had a successful year up until now with an even amazing Spring quarter. One of the reasons behind the same can be the branching out of competitor Xbox Game Pass as they are now more focused on introducing their services to mobile phones.
By the way, if you are looking for a PlayStation Plus subscription, we got you covered. Buy from us to get access to your very own Plus account where you can enjoy new assorted titles every month with minimal charge. So go ahead and check it out.

Know The Key Aspects of New Web Design & Development to Make Your Website Standout!
Building and launching a business website takes a lot more than just planning. Loads of processes are involved that require smart work with future oriented stuff, transforming your business ideas into web-based application. It should be the replica of your business values that will help turn your venture into a steady stream of revenue. To ensure that you are going in the right direction of Website Design & Development, you need to find answers to three ‘Ws’! Didn’t get it? Well, these three ‘Ws’ include
1. What message do you want to deliver through your website?
2. Why would people visit your website?
3. Who is your target audience?
Why is Website Design & Development So Important? If only given 20 minutes to go through the content, 70% of the customers’ would like to visit a website that has an appealing visual effect. After all, why would someone visit your website if it does not have that x-factor? Keeping an eye on the new norm, the design & layout of your website plays a crucial role solidifying your online presence. A good, responsive website can make a world of difference to the way your business functions. Because a website is the virtual face of any organization that creates an impression in the customer's minds before they opt to make a deal. Just try to put yourself in the shoes of an average shopper and think, why would you buy products from a particular brand? You are not directly going to the business to make a deal or meeting in person, so what's driving you? It's the website that acts as a thread between a customer and a business, right? So, it needs attention to every detail, and you should leave no stone unturned to give it the best of the features. After all, website design & development is a one-time investment that can draw big money till the business exists.
Your Website:
Sets the First Impression When visitors land on your website, it gives them the first impression of your business. By having a look at your website, they can easily map out your business standards within seconds. And, those first few seconds can make or break the deal! With an outdated, dreary looking website, you are not going to get hold of that positive impression or persuade their buying decisions. The result? You will lose a large chunk of business opportunities to your competitors just because of your website. The first impression you create with your website will pay in your best interest, turning visitors into potential customers and spreading a positive word of mouth among netizens. A responsive website decreases the customer bounce rates, intriguing visitors to scroll next and stay there for a few more minutes. And, it is all possible when you opt for a good web design service.
Helps in SEO: A content rich, responsive website turns out to be search engines’ favorite. Their spiders will crawl and index your website that eventually results in, appearing top of the search results. The content alignment and web designing elements is the key to delivering a good SEO-friendly website. So, let the best in the business design your website. Making the website seo friendly will help the search engines as well as the Digital Marketing Company to expand your website identity from all aspects.
It Gains The Trust of Your Audience: As we have already mentioned that a website is the face of any organization. When you meet someone for the very first time, you look up to their face, the way they respond to your queries and persona of course, right? This is what exactly a website does! With a poorly designed, unstructured website, you won’t be able to gain that trust factor in the first go itself. The result? You miss, I hit! They are available with a plethora of online sites to get their orders fulfilled. On the other hand, a professional looking website is able to win the trust of the audience that could result in making purchases & hopefully a long-term association. The more time they spend on your website, chances remain high they are being converted to your potential buyers.
To Stay Ahead of Your Competitors: If you need a solid reason to go for web design services, here’s a big one: your competitors have already taken the step. In order to remain in the game, you have upscale your web presence with creative website design and development service. With millions of websites already there on the web and more to launch in the coming days, you need to push your limits to stand out in this highly crowded marketplace. This is very important, especially in a time where 70% of the world’s population is sitting at home due to pandemic restrictions and websites being the only way to contact a business. Competing with similar types of products & services in the same price range is only possible with a good looking, sophisticated website.
The Consistency Factor: It is always not about getting new leads; it is also about giving an overall good experience to the returning customers. Creating a consistency across your pages with the same fonts, styles, and layouts give it a more professional look and keeps the bounce rate in check.
4 Key Elements of Website Design & Development:
Now you must have understood the importance of web design & development, it’s time to take a look at the key elements that are must to deliver a quality design.
Solid Navigation: Users want quick and easy access to the information, as nobody likes to get stuck and do not have time for the same. Having a user-friendly navigation bar, find them the info they are looking for, hence longer they stay at your website. Try to keep the navigation as simple as you can and self-explanatory. Including broader headings that graciously circumscribe subtopics of various types would make information finding easier.
Responsive Design: With mobile phones becoming smarter, the need for a responsive website is more important than ever. Your website should be easily accessible with any kind of devices, be it smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. Satisfying users of all age groups on the devices of their choice require a responsive website design. This is a must to give your visitors a good web browsing experience 24/7.Page loading speed: No matter how good your design is, it’s of no use if not able to open within those seconds or microseconds. Page loading speed is the key element to give an overall good customer CX. Slow page loading leads to an increase in bounce rate, which is not good for any business. Do make sure they load faster, and keep working on them to ensure zero downtime
Call-to-action (CTA) Buttons: Once they are convinced to carry on with your products or services, it’s time for some real action and there comes the Call-to-action (CTA) buttons. They guide users to proceed to the next step. These buttons should be designed in such a way that will catch the attention of the users from the moment they scroll down through your website. On successful website integration of smart Call-to-action buttons, your probability of driving better page results goes higher.
