When you deliver early, you might not see your baby before they are taken away to the NICU. Sometimes the mother is very sick or unconscious. The NICU staff are lovely as they send a photo up to you in recovery. I remember being allowed down to the NICU after a day. It was then I realised the photographs were close up. I could only see one arm and 2 little legs, all of 2lb. Initially it's shocking but then you realise that these tiny little babies are absolute warriors. It's a difficult journey for any parent of a preterm baby. It's hard to fathom the obstacles that your baby needs to overcome when you first enter a NICU. You won't always feel overwhelmed, anxious, stressed or out of control, it's temporary. It's normal to feel those emotions but it does not last forever. Reaching out to fellow preterm parents is incredibly beneficial for new parents, ample studies have highlighted this. I know we complain about the internet and social media but it definitely has positive outcomes for new NICU parent's.
