For as long as I can remember, being a nurse was always the dream. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” was always followed by “a NICU nurse.”
Wynnie here was born at 28 weeks, 4 days gestational age. She was 2 pounds, 2 ounces when she was born. I met her parents when they were first admitted, and became friends with her mom through “how are you today? kiddo matters but so do you.”
and by some wild twist of fate, we discovered that we were starting nursing school together just a couple of weeks later. Wynter has become one of my regular study buddies, and watching her grow and reach milestone after milestone makes me remember why i’m doing what I am doing.
There have been quite a few bumps along the way, and things haven’t gone nearly as smoothly as I would have liked, but watching the 2 pound, 2 ounce peanut turn into a normal, happy, healthy chunk is something I will never, ever, get tired of watching.

All I want for Christmas is for our unit to get snuggle-ups back.
My unit uses the disposable kind and we’ve been on back order for almost a year. Every now and then we get a small supply but quickly run out. On the other hand I’ve got pretty good at making little nests out of blankets and burp rags.
Edit: this is just a free use pic I found on google images, not a patient of mine

Something I’ve noticed over the past couple of years is this absolute sense of entitlement patients have with the healthcare system. It was there when I started nursing in 2013 but I lived in a NICU bubble for 7 of those years. We didn’t really deal with patient satisfaction surveys (hello, babies) but some parents were nightmares to deal with. I just assumed it was all related to the NICU experience.
Now I work in a pediatric clinic. I’m a phone triage nurse and parents just absolutely DEMAND things from the doctors. Not “if the doctor thinks it’s appropriate I’d like…”. But “I want the doctor to order an MRI for as soon as possible” “Ma’am the doctor would need to examine your child to determine if an MRI sis needed” “They saw them 6 months ago. I want an MRI now”
Not even getting into the whole COVID debacle. Parents wanting mask exemptions for nonsense reasons (acne), parents demanding we vaccinate their <12 year old child, parents arguing about “infertility” caused by vaccines, parents arguing about home quarantine protocols, etc.
What really prompted my annoyance is the fact that I’m now pregnant (almost done!) and like an idiot I use the What to Expect app. They have like a community message board thing. I can’t tell you how many other moms comment “The doctor has to do what you tell them. They work for you.” Um…. NO! This isn’t a hospitality business. Administration has focused on customer satisfaction so much they have created this mentality. It gets in the way of actually treating patients appropriately. And that might include doing things the patient might not like. Some interventions are needed. If you don’t like it don’t go to a doctor. As a nurse I often feel like a waitress and that is beyond what I went to school to do.

“Hope is a powerful thing. Some say it’s a different breed of magic altogether. Elusive, difficult to hold on to. But not much is needed.” . . 🌟QOTD: Do you believe in miracles? . . Happy #mapmonday friends!! I was searching through photos for today and when I saw this one of Caraval I knew I had to post. It’s been really tough at work lately. We have this tiny human (who is not so tiny) who is in need of a miracle but unfortunately I don’t think it is going to come. I have seen some pretty miraculous things working as a nurse and definitely believe there are times things happen that cannot be explained. I also know how powerful hope can be and will be holding onto that hope for these parents. Caraval is such a magical world and times like these I am so thankful I can escape into Stephanie’s writing and world and just be surrounded by the magic. Plus look at this gorgeous map!! Have I mentioned how much I love maps?? 🤣 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #caraval #maplove #stephaniegarber #nicunurse #caravalmap #flatlaystyle #booknerd #instareads #bookaesthetic #ventureswithbooks #booklife #booksofinstagram #bookworm #yafiction #yabooks #bookishfeatures #bookstagramer #bookstagramit #wintertheme https://www.instagram.com/p/B7jyAHfgHxx/?igshid=8m0obc1yiz8u

Happy Friday! I have one more night to work tonight and then I’m off for a couple days! Ninth House by @lbardugo was one of my top reads from 2019. Leigh’s first dive into the “adult” world is absolutely fantastic. It is a dark and twisty mystery that takes place at Yale. The world building is exceptionally done and blends the facts with the story. Ninth House is an atmospheric and captivating tale that is full of magic, secret societies, ghosts, and surprises around every corner. I can’t wait to see where Leigh takes the story next! #ninthhouse #leighbardugo #alexstern #secretsociety #darlington #pameladawes #talesofanavidreader #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblog #bookreviewer #booknerd #booklover #bookworm #nicunurse #nightshift #nurselife https://www.instagram.com/p/B8R5ny0AnMm/?igshid=1pt36l39le8c2

The dreaded phone call from lab “your CBC is clotted” 🙄. Bane of my existence. I have to agree with the skit, that I’d rather get a call for a critical result VS a clotted CBC (need recollect).

The main reason for people not meeting their feeding goals for their new babies is perceived low supply. Perceived. Blew my mind when I first found out. What are your thoughts? 🤔 Advice from @imogenibclc on how to tell if everything is ok: Especially in the early days this can be tricky to know. There are some simple ways of knowing. 1. Monitor how many wet and dirty nappies they are having. After all what goes in must come out. From when your milk volume increases (usually about three days after the birth of your baby) you should see about 6 wet nappies per day. Your baby should also be having several soft yellow or mustard coloured poos per day. 2. Also look & listen for swallowing - when your baby is breastfeeding well you will see their jaw moving throughout the feed (with occasional pauses) If you can’t hear them swallowing look for the slight pause in their sucking when they swallow. 3. Weight gain 4. Look for signs that they are full and satisfied. Their body especially their hands and face will soften and often they will fall asleep on the breast or come off the breast on their own after about 10-30 minutes of active sucking & swallowing. . . . #breastfeeding #ibclc #nicunurse #informedisbest #normalisebreastfeeding #motherhood #selondon #london #newborn (at Rochester, Medway) https://www.instagram.com/p/B41gaxtg9PS/?igshid=1k9mv9cza4rhv
