Kuro First-Person Pronouns: Doll

Unlike English, Japanese has many first-person pronouns ( “I”). These often will give you information about the type of person the character is. Are they very feminine or masculine? Polite or brusque? Young or old? Are they higher or lower in the social hierarchy? How close, psychologically, are they to the listener?

It’s not uncommon for one person to use different pronouns in different situations, and that is sometimes the case in the manga, depending on the character.

These ofc get lost in translation and are something I find very interesting. So this series will go through some of the Black Butler characters and show you which pronoun(s) they tend to use in Japanese and what that says about them as a character.

Doll - オレ

Used By: Men | Casual or Polite: Casual

[Also used by Bard]

Doll consistently uses オレ.

Doll’s gender is a bit confusing , especially once you move from the Japanese into a language like English that demands pronouns for a sentence to make sense.

Although Doll is afab (as admitted to Ciel in the Circus Arc), Doll uses the first-person pronoun オレ (aka 俺), ore, which is the same one Bard does.

Here, Doll admits to Ciel that they’re a 「乙女」, or young girl (translated as “maid” in the official English), but even after continues using the same “masculine” pronoun (see below for example).

Doll also uses オレ in the present, and the official English used “he” as a pronoun for Doll. (The Japanese doesn’t need a third-person pronoun, so aside from オレ, there’s no official gender marker for Doll.)

Now, as I discussed in Bard’s post, some women do use this pronoun, but it not clear why Doll does. Is it because Doll grew up surrounded by men and boys? Is it because Doll has “taken on” a male persona to fit in? Or does Doll identify as masculine?

I can’t answer those questions based solely on the source text. All I can say is that Doll tells Ciel that they’re a “maiden” and consistently uses オレ.

So is Doll an 「オレつ娘」, orekko, a woman who uses the ore pronoun? Unless Yana gives us more info about Doll, it’s impossible for me to say.

However, some more history about this pronoun. It originated from a second-person pronoun (“you”), おのれ (oh no re) before the Kamakura period (~1185-1332), and in the Edo period (~1600-1867) eventually became a first-person pronoun that was used by both men and women of various stations.

During the Meiji period (~1868-1912), woman stopped using it in standard dialect, but it retained a strong presence in regional rural dialects. It could be that Yana has Doll use オレ as a way to distinguish them as having a coarser, more “country” way of speaking, rather than directly indicating anything about Doll’s gender.

オレ is also associated with tough and aggressive women, especially in fiction, which could be another reason Yana elected to have Doll use it. In fact, girls who use this pronoun have an association in manga/anime of being tomboys, often can beat boys in a fight, and may dress in masculine clothing. That definitely seems to fit Doll while not in their circus getup.

Once again, it’s likely Yana took all these things into account while deciding which pronoun to use for Doll.

Why I like them: Her passionate nature, her determination to live her truth as a woman even in the face of ridicule, her skill as a fighter, her beauty, her stage presence (she dominates every scene she’s in)

Why I don’t: Me???? Not like Grelle????? That’s impossible.

Favorite episode (scene if movie): (assuming we’re talking about the anime) Her “big reveal”/fight with Sebastian at the end of the Jack the Ripper arc (sets my little shipper’s heart aflame every time), the scene where she gets her chainsaw back in Book of Circus, all her Book of Atlantic moments

Favorite season/movie: The more recent anime adaptations (Circus, Atlantic), which keep her characterization somewhat closer to the manga

Favorite line: “The more glamorous the woman, the more alluring she becomes, just like a beautiful, poisonous flower, right?” And, of course, “Red is the color of fiery passion, and I am flaming!” from Season 1!

Favorite outfit: I love them all! But her awesome coat in her most recent scenes with Othello and her fancy dress from The Most Beautiful Death in the World are both near the top.

Why I like them: His resilience, his determination in the face of despair, his drive, his cutness, the fact that he does care for those closest to him even though he tends to hide it

Why I don’t: His willingness to lie to and betray others, his arrogance, the way he overworks Sebastian

Favorite episode (scene if movie): The Book of Atlantic flashbacks, where we get to see him grow into his role as the earl. I’m so proud of my son. :’)

Favorite season/movie: Book of Circus; harrowing stuff, but an excellent chance to gain further insights into his character behind the cool, collected persona

Favorite line: “Even if I’m made to stand on the edge of despair in a hellish place, I won’t give up. I’ll grab the spider’s thread if it’ll help me crawl up out of there. We humans possess that kind of strength.” He’s such a fighter. :’)

Favorite outfit: Although his outfits are exquisite, they’re sometimes a bit…sexualized much for me. I’d probably go with his wholesome little sailor suit from the twin reveal flashbacks!

OTP: Cielsiegelinde, Cielizzy; I could also see him with one of the Weston boys, like Joanne or Macmillan

Brotp: Soma! Unlike a certain bizarre doll, he’s actually a good older brother to our earl.

Head Canon: He once wrote a poem to give to Lizzy but tore it up in humiliation after Sebastian found it and roasted the hell out of his verse. 

Unpopular opinion: The cursed OTP is not canon. Also, O!Ciel doesn’t enjoy wearing feminine-coded clothing; Yana just likes drawing him in it.

A wish: That he’d get the therapy he needs and have a long, happy life.

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: He becomes a demon. Although I love him to pieces, he does need to atone for his crimes, and I just want this sad babey to rest. Turning into a devil might doom him to an eternity of suffering.

Summary: As you were studying to obtain your medical & veterinary degree, your professor came up with the idea of organizing an internship - where you found yourself side by side with a sick hybrid that needed nothing other that complete care.

CHAPTER 2

Ever since you were just a little kid, you’re parents have encouraged you to become whatever you wanted to be, without any pressure of some sort. So they didn’t oppose when you told them that you wanted to become a doctor -   actually they seemed proud of your choice.

You didn’t want to become just a doctor of some sort - simple doctors could only work on other humans and that wasn’t what you wished to do.. You decided to take a few years to study hybrids perfectly and, after a bit of time, you applied to one of the most prestigious schools in your country to start your medical & veterinary - hybrids degree. 

Hybrids enthralled you in a way that you couldn’t even understand. They were so full of charms and a never ending source of new discoveries - you could never be bored around them.

When you were a little girl, you had witnessed how an hybrid could be treated by their non-caring owners and the sight of the beaten up boy made your heart ache. As you came back home, your mother had explained you what you had seen on the streets - telling you that it wasn’t unusual to see hybrid in his condition because hybrid couldn’t really defend themselves or hurt anybody. 

After her explication you made up your mind to what you wanted to do, and the idea of healing hurt hybrids got stuck in your mind for the time being. 

As soon as you started going to that big and brilliant school, your persona attracted the attention of many teachers - that recognized your passion towards hybrids in general and towards the job that you were inspiring to do. They knew that you would have become someone successful in the future, because no one with that big of a devotion ever fails to do what they want. 

You were sleeping peacefully in your bed, enjoying the free time that you had - without any class to attend when the phone rang, cutting off your sleep. Opening your eyes to see who was calling you that early in the morning, you let out an annoyed groan - responding without any introduction. 

“What do you want?” You asked with a muffled voice from under the covers. 

“Good morning sleepy-head, are you still in bed?” The voice of your not-so-tired-friend spoke up in your ear making you huff. 

“Where else would I be? it’s our free day. We don’t have classes.” Taking off the covers from your face, you sat up in the mattress already aware of the fact that you weren’t going to get back to sleep. 

“Professor Kwon sent us a mail, did you read it?” He asked and you responded with a worried tone. 

“What did he say?”

“That he’s sorry but we have to meet up with him because he needs to tell us something.” He explained.

“When’s that” You yawned, getting up - ready to put some clothes on while talking with him on speaker. 

“In ten so you better hurry.”

“Fuck!” You swore running to the bathroom.

“Thanks Joon!” You yelled, making him laugh in response. 

“See you there Y/N.” 

Mr. Kwon was your professor of veterinary and he used to teach you everything about hybrid’s illnesses and behaviors. You loved him as a teacher because he was more like a father to you than anything else. Your classmates also though the same way about him - he truly cared about all of his students and that warmed your heart. 

After finishing getting ready, you got out of your dorm, sprinting down the halls of the dormitory. Fortunately, unlike some other students who had the possibility of living in separate apartments, you slept in a small dorm - a room located in the dormitory where a lot of other girls lived as well. It was extremely small, but it could be a vantage for you when you were running late to class. 

After a couple of minutes of speed walking, you recognized the silhouettes of your classmates in the distance, at the entrance of your classroom. 

Your friend Namjoon was waiting at the doorway with a book in his hands. Getting closer to them, you greeted him. 

“You made it!” Your friend smiled at you, closing the book that he was reading with a smile on his face. 

“Yeah, is Professor Kwon already here?” You asked breathless and he nodded. 

“He locked himself inside of the room - he said that we have to wait a bit because he needs to organize a few things before talking to us.” He explained and you looked at him confuse.

“Do you have any idea of what he’s going to tell us?” He shook his head in response. 

“I never understand what goes on in his head.” You laughed at his mark and - suddenly - the door opened. 

Your professor welcomed you smiling brightly with his grayish hair pulled back and the usual lab coat on. 

“Hi guys! Come in!” With a loud voice, he sat down on his desk and we all followed him sitting in front of him. 

He stayed silent for a couple of minutes, taking a couple of papers off his backpack before starting to speak again. 

“So, I’ve been organizing this for quite some time now..” He stood up, sitting on top of his desk with the papers in his hand. 

“Her on these papers you’ll find the informations of different hybrids, their type, their breed, their illness and some traits of their personality that you’ll have to analyze before starting to work with them. I personally assigned them to each one of you based on your capacity. On the paper you’ll also find the address of where they’re staying because you’ll start an internship tomorrow. In my opinion you guys need to work hand in hand with other hybrids and not only with books - your other professors all agree with me.” He got up once again, handing out the papers to us. 

“You’ll work to gain their trust and - if necessary - you’ll make them move in with you so that you’ll look after them better. Some of them need constant attention, never forget that. You’ll bring them here once in a while so that I’ll see how this internship is going - to make sure that they’re healing without complications.” He handed the paper to Namjoon and then to me. 

“You’ll stay with them through their problems and you’ll work with them to cure their illnesses for what is possible - with physiotherapy if they’ve had soma kind of traumatic injury or other treatments if necessary. Remember, you need to to heal their souls as much as their bodies.” He turned around to look at you with a caring smile. 

“They need to be healthy inside and out.” You all stayed silent as you red the papers that he had handed to you. 

“Wow, this is cool!” Namjoon exclaimed reading his paper. 

“What does it say?” You asked him, reading it as well. 

“He’s called Taehyung, a fox hybrid apparently.” 

“He’s ill?” You asked and he red the letter seriously. 

“Mr. Kwon wrote that the broke his leg while running. I’ll help him regaining the ability to walk again I suppose, maybe with physiotherapy or something...What about you?” You looked up at him, realizing that you still had to read yours. 

“Oh..I’ll open it..” You did as you said, reading the words that your professor had wrote with a messy handwriting.
