i think one of the biggest let downs for me in ouat was the daily mirror (honestly my own fault for thinking too hard). i'm sure that this has been said a hundred times but i feel so much about it.

not to be captain of the obvious, but within the very first few episodes of season 1 the major power structures in storybrooke are established: mayor's office, sheriff's station, mr gold's shop, and the daily mirror. prior to emma's arrival as the saviour, all of these uphold regina's reign.

then over the course of the first season (with exception), you see the figureheads of these establishments lose their position some way or the other. graham dies early in the series, sidney glass loses his job and then gets arrested, and this all cumulates in the finale of season 1 and the beginning of season 2, where everyone's got their memories back and regina, while not formally losing her position as mayor, but does face the backlash of the entire town. gold is a notable exception to this since the writers always intended for him to be a major player, but it only takes him til season 3 to no longer own his shop cause he died, and then again in season 4 when he's banished.

but beyond this, everyone regina had in her pocket was replaced by someone on emma's side. emma herself takes over the role of sheriff when graham dies and that's where we see the first crack in the foundation of regina's authority. belle becomes the owner of the shop both times gold is indisposed. i'd like to reiterate for regina that while she never formally loses the role, david acts as a stand in during early season 2 to fill in that leadership role over the general town, and then in season 3 we see snow become mayor in title for a time (whatever happened to that plot...?)

circling back to the start, the only one that is never replaced is sidney in the daily mirror, which arguably should be the most important role to fill post breaking the curse since meta wise, the magic mirror is the evil queen's most iconic henchman, more than the huntsman ever was. additionally, i'm a very big fan of free press. it's SO influential and could have played a much bigger role in storybrooke. sidney had clearly been replaced, given we still see newspapers throughout the seasons, but i just wish something more could have been done with it.

my number one nomination AND expectation was that this was gonna be a slowburn of sorts to build up henry as he grew up over the series. not only would it be perfect for the obvious reason of henry's subsequent author storyline, but there would be something delicious about regina's most loyal confidant eventually being replaced by her own son. something it being some kind of foil, where instead of the loyalty being built upon obsession and coercion and control, it's built on mutual respect and love and trust. which would then ALSO tie in very nicely to the ending of season 6 when regina becomes mayor again, and of course her and emma are allies.

i assumed that this was pretty much confirmed during the whole author storyline, and that the second he became working age in the usa (forgive me idk what it is) he would start an internship at the daily mirror and eventually work his way up to becoming the most high profile journalist in storybrooke. season 5 touched on the author plotline nicely tho i wish we could have gotten a little something more. season 6 came and went, and if it touched on anything, it was so minor that i don't remember it.

this is probably what makes it most painful to me that SEASON 7 of all seasons was the closest (and yet simultaneously also the furthest) from achieving this. yes, his journey through the realms is important, but arguably defining his writing ability in season 7 to a novel of what he thought was completely imagined, serves almost the same purpose as the storybook from seasons 1-6, but undermines him and does a disservice to him. the whole podcast subplot was close but because this was seattle and not storybrooke, and so it's not a one for one replacement of sidney with henry.

Todays gift a fic inspired by a popular winter song.

The Jones Christmas party was a success. The night had been filled with laughter and the exchanging of gifts and pranks. Most everyone had left, most except.

"Swan you really don't have to clean up," Killian insisted for the tenth time.

"It's fine. I know you like your place a certain way," Emma replied picking up some bottles that had been left on the table.

It wasn't even that big of a mess. His friends thankfully cleaned up after themselves as the night went on, for the most part. Knowing he wouldn't be able to convince her otherwise he left her in the living room. He went to the kitchen to begin cleaning there.

The place was clean in no time. In fact the only evidence there was a party was the three garbage bags in the kitchen, which Killian intended to take out in the morning.

"Well," Emma announced shuffling on her feet, "I guess thats it."

At some point she had pulled her hair back in a messy pony tail, along with discarding her sweater. She stood before him in a simple tank top and fitted jeans, still she was the most beautiful woman hes ever had the pleasure of knowing.

"Allow me to show you my appreciation with a drink."

"I can't stay."

"Just one drink." Killian looked in her eyes imploring her to stay just a little longer.

The corner of Emma's mouth turned up slightly in a shy smile, "Alright. One drink."

Killian turned to the kitchen as Emma made herself comfortable on the couch. He warmed some water in a kettle and prepared to mugs. Not long after he disappeared he reemerged holding to mugs.

"Thank you," Emma took the mug and took a sip, "Cinnamon?"

Killian nodded, "Thats how you like it. Is it not?"

"Yeah. I'm just surprised you remembered." She smiled into her mug before taking another sip.

The tips of Killians ears redden as he reached for his remote putting on a virtual yule log with soft music playing in the background.

"There now that should warm us up," he joked.

Emma smiled. They passed the time with light conversation and hidden glances. Before long something caught Killians eye out the windows. He pulled back the curtain slightly to reveal a snow storm.

Emma turned her head to look as well, "Oh I better go." She set her mug down on the coffee table and rose to her feet.

"Swan," He stopped her rising to his own feet, "There must be 3 feet of snow out there."

"I really can't stay."

"It's freezing outside."

Emma stopped looking for her sweater and shoes, looking up at her host, "This evening has been-"

"I'm glad you drop by." Killian took a step closer to her.

"It was really nice."

Killian gently grabbed her hands feeling how cold they got, "Your hands are like ice."

Leaning forward a bit he brought her hands to him as he tried to warm them with his warm breath. Sending a shiver down her spine.

"My mother will start to worry."

Killian picked up his head at this. He was greeted to the sight of a mischievous smile gracing Emmas face.

"Whats your hurry?" he quirked an eyebrow.

Emma looked down at her feet shifting her weight before meeting his gaze again and saying, "My father will be pacing the floor."

Killian straightened more never letting go of her hands, "Listen to the fire place roar."

"Well maybe a half a drink more."

Killian pulled her a little further in before letting her go. Grabbing her mug, he scurried to the kitchen to refill it with her favorite drink. When he returned he handed it back to her and turned the volume up on the fire place.

Cradling the mug close to her she spoke up again, "The neighbors might think."

Killian hesitated only a moment, "It's bad out there."

Emma took a sip from her mug, never taking her eyes off him. Barely taking the mug from her mouth she said, "Whats in this drink?"

Killians eye widen. He opened his mouth to reassure there was nothing in there besides cinnamon and chocolate. But as she lowered her mug her eyes held jest and her smirk calmed him. This was part of her game.

Killian sighed, "Your eyes are like starlight."

"I wish I knew how," Emma put the mug break on the table swaying closer to Killian, "to break this spell."

"Your hair looks swell," Killian smiled down at her. He brought up his hand moving a strand of hair out of her face.

"Mind if I move in closer," Killian asked as he took a step forward, his hands coming to resting on her hips.

"The welcome has been," Emma brought her hands around his neck, "so nice and warm."

"Look out the window at the storm." They began to sway in the spot. The sound of the virtual fire crackling and the soft instrumental music playing guiding them.

"My sister will be suspicious. My brother will be at the door."

He had no doubt that Elsa and Mary Margret would be gossiping about her staying late. David would surely break down his door. But all Killian could focus on was the woman infront of him.

"Gosh your lips look delicious."

Finally the space between them was closed. Their lips danced as sparks flew bewteen them. This had been like nothing either of them had ever experienced before. They pulled each other closer unable to get enough of each other.

When them came up for air, Killian was the first to speak, "Since we've no place to go. Let it snow."

Emma giggled at that before leaning in for another kiss.

Without breaking apart Killian lifted Emma and carried her to his bedroom. It was cold outside but they were sweating by morning.

OUAT sucks so much at writing romances that the only "straight woman" that seems to be actually attracted to men is Snow. Literally everyone else's attraction is just compulsive heterosexuality, they kiss a man and I just. can't believe them.

That playlist though. Oh no. OH NO! Feelings for and about Mulan. Right through the heart. I love "Another Love" so very much, but I'm often said when you watch some fanedit and it's kinda missing this beat how, well, the previous/other/first love was so all consuming, that finding something new is hard. Now you make me think about Sleeping Warrior vs Red Warrior here, OBVIOUSLY!

Mulan hitting rock bottom, wandering around aimless after leaving Aurora, because obviously she didn't join Robin. And we see her in that tavern, given up on honor (her truest of loves, clearly). Hitting the other direction of her whole character so hard. Meeting Ruby is nice, but falling for her doesn't come easy at all. She had her hopes set up on Aurora and it destroyed her completely, now where is the energy to muster up the courage to go for a second round?

~And if somebody hurts you, I wanna fight But my hand's been broken one too many times~ HELP! I'M DYING OVER HERE WITH THE IMAGES!! Thinking back to the intensity of the first time and while wanting love not being able to go for it... yeah, very canon, very tragic.

I'm listening through the whole thing, but I saw it ends with Marina. Great. The only thing more devastating would have been a Florence song. Marina's voice alone can carry this specific kind of melancholia/sadness... ~I'm a nomad [...] no sweet home~ Yeah, a Mulan song. What a choice. Never meeting anybody from her past, not getting her own happy ending.

Also, yes to the thing you said - she is so terribly stubborn. They gave us a fullfledged 3dimensional character with flaws, who would also bring a very useful skillset to the table and with more time all those walls she clearly build could have been torn down by the right person. Damn.

(Maybe I should finally cave and get spotify, make things easier. lol)

Another Love THEE reason for this playlist! At least, when I listened to it some years ago, it was the first (and for a while the only song) I had on her playlist. Because it was so perfect for her!! and I HAD to have it on some kind of Mulan playlist.

But YEAH!! Mulan's heartbreak over Aurora is so evident in season 5 and it really changes her as a person. And she becomes so bitter and so jaded (and then canon doesn't even give her a happy ending and she has to third wheel AGAIN 😭)

But when you throw Ruby into the mix? Oh boy, I'm VERY here for this. It won't be easy for either of them (Mulan struggling to open up and put herself out there again and with Ruby viewing herself as a monster still and worrying about hurting Mulan if they're too close) but...if they were both able to work up the courage and power through any of those issues... 👀

Also, see, I think it's such a shame because I feel like Mulan IS three dimensional, yes! But sometimes fandom (very broadly speaking) treats her like she's not. And she gets watered down into this kind of 'girlboss' character. And yeah, she IS a girlboss! Sure! But she's kind of a dork-ass-loser as well sometimes and she takes things way too seriously and she's so closed off.

Anyway, the point is that, like many ouat side characters, Mulan deserved so much more from canon.
