beat the Live A Live remake...I bought it when it came out but my ADHD ass didn't wanna play it until I braced myself fully for all the secret bosses, because I wanted to be completionist this time around...
...was very worth it though! what a good fucking game! everything they added made it even better; the QoL to the battle system alone is just huge. ("there were weaknesses and resistances in this game??" I say, having literally beaten the original)
almost feel like I should get a music player on my blog again so I can throw the new mix of Megalomania up there, because I had it on my blog like 10 years ago and had asks like "oh my god what is that song from??" LMFAO. full circle
I wish every cult classic could get another shot at life with this much love and care. and hey, now it's on Steam, so this is me telling you you have no excuse!!
full game spoilers below, but I had a few screenshots I wanted to take. also some additional, equally spoilery commentary:
...mostly of boss kills, because I started with Prehistory (I like going chronologically, it pleases my brain), so I figured "well I'm grinding forever to take down the mammoth, as well as other superbosses I heard were Hard, I might as well get screenshot trophies of everything"
poop throw MVP
adding voice acting really makes you confront a few things. why did they make ou di wan lee sound hot.
oh my god FUCK THIS SWORD GUY. I was trying to go for oboromaru no kill route so I had to just...grind on ghosts...then this ghost sword guy keeps killing my ass...sob...sob...I actually almost gave up here
then I didn't
the fish was so much easier in comparison man
oboromaru why is your chapter like this
then I blanked and didn't take a picture of killing gamahebi because I was too overcome by the fact I 1) successfully did the no kill run and 2) never have to do this again
awarded myself with gay cowboys next. I didn't go into this thinking "time to award myself with gay cowboys" but like, I last played this game before I realized I was gay. so like. it kind of just hit me all at once. oh no this Did something to me didn't it
I took this screenshot because I was stoned as hell and mad dog's stupid little smug gayboy pose just really got me
hey can I also say I just really like the HD2D style? I never played Octopath so this was my first....and like...this really fucking blows pretty much any SNES FF remake out of the water. I know they don't do this for every game because of Budget I'm sure, but like, God I Wish Every SNES Square RPG Could Get This Treatment
gay???????????
is it just me or is odie o'bright the hardest final boss of the individual character chapters????? fuck this guy
out of context live a live
I love that they added voice to the combat too. hearing Akira go "YOU SUCK!" in a giant mech as he evades an attack is just
so fucking funny to hear in a final boss fight
ok OD-10 had THE biggest glow-up though
every time my eyes got to grace this battlefield/boss I was like mMMmMMMMMMMM
normal final boss fight :)
:(
i love masaru he's just a completely normal dude
THE FINAL CHAPTER HAS SO MANY EXTRA BOSSES AHHH.
FISH 2
actually can I just say I LOVE how they localized the middle ages to be all shakespearean
which means that not only do oersted/odio get to be the hugest drama queens, every boss in the area in general just has the most delightful dialogue
FFXIV has taught them well. did you know the dialogue in FFXIV is NOT like that in japanese?! I can't even imagine
it was around this point that I realized doing EVERY character dungeon probably overleveled me hardcore
and, in that respect, I can see why you may have accidentally stumbled upon the fact that running from 100 encounters nets you a secret boss. I got sick of that shit around when Lei was one-shotting everything first turn
but.
not in a bad way necessarily. like I knew going in this was definitely going to happen since I'm doing EVERYTHING in a chapter where you can technically bumrush the final boss of the game
so I guess my advice is, if you find the battle system a bit difficult during boss fights, leveling solves most ills
the other ills can be taken care of by Cube
I admit I didn't vibe so much with Pure Odio upon first playthrough, mostly because it's hard to compete with Megalomania being there, but I really vibed with the new mix
but THEN
but THEN!!!!
they EXPANDED ON THE FINAL BOSS FIGHT???! HUH???
(ME LOSING MY MIND)
it's like something out of fanfic??? in the best way??? just this small little thing that really makes an impact on the character arc BUT NOT in a way that destroys anything that was there previously
just a small little detail...this is what I kinda wish for more remakes honestly?? expansion isn't BAD. some of the issues with modern remakes of games from 20 years ago is that they DON'T change anything. being TOO loyal can hurt sometimes
also oersted's VA just fuckin KILLED it good job my dude
gay cowboy dad giving the saddest boy in the universe some sympathy
these credits were really nice. always gotta love Montage Credits
OH....WUH...WAHHH....
AND THEN
THE TITLE SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!
WHHWAHHWAAHHHHHHHHHHH
live a live is so good.....................
i'm so glad this game can reach more people now. definite 10/10

Bring the Time Back

Cube's world is at peace again. The little robot just wants to repair the Captain Square arcade cabinet as a surprise gift for Kato. When the real Captain Square rescues them from the ensuing disaster, they are propelled into an adventure across space and time along with Masaru, Akira and even a few surviving incarnations of Odio who, while they still hate the rest of the world, appreciate a good game of Captain Square.

I played Live a Live and it was an amazing game! Literally, one of the coolest things I’ve played and right up there with some of my favorites. So I figured I’d give some thoughts about all the different chapters of the game! SPOILER WARNING FOR LITERALLY EVERTHING
Prehistory: So the prehistory chapter is one of the chapters I like less in this game, though that’s probably because I’m a huge story person and this chapter has a word count of 0. The battles are incredibly brutal and some of the enemy design feels a bit...bland? Also, this may just be me, but I did not understand Pogo and Beru. I mean, I guess I like the two, but this man sees a girl and immediately loves her. He gives her food and she kisses him. They are now in love so much that he is willing to get thrown out of his village! How crazy is that! Unfortunately, after this point, the plot takes a nosedive off a cliff, only truly resuming at the very end, in which we get to fight A FREAKING DINOSAUR! Ok this is actually pretty cool as a fight, even if Odo is a bit easy. Nothing more to really say, let’s just move on.
The Wild West: This chapter is really simple, but that’s not a bad thing! I think it’s still a good chapter. Anyway, it begins with Sundown, an outlaw. We then get to meet his boyfriend Mad dog and we face him. After beating him we end up going to the town of Success, were we get to your mom a vagrant before beating him up. Things continue to escalate until we’re exploring the town as we look for traps in an incredibly anxiety inducing segment. Following this we fight O.Dio and then get sentimental on Mad Dog, before riding off into the sunset. This chapter really doesn’t have much to say about it but I don’t find that a problem. It’s short, sweet and tells a full story.
Imperial China: Probably my favorite chapter in the game, Imperial China blends amazing gameplay with a stellar story and the best mechanic in the game: Inheritance. It’s also at this point I would like to take a side rant to talk about the visuals and music. The visuals are gorgeous, every area and character looks great. And the musical score is one I would add to my Spotify playlist, no question. But I digress. The disciples! This is a cool mechanic, where you train your next successor. All the disciples are cool and there’s a choice for everyone. I personally ‘chose’ Lei. I put it in quotation marks, because the character you give the most training to will be your successor. And in a shock twist, the other two will die. This moment shook me. But anyway, with Lei and the Shifu we go and beat up the indominable fist fortress. A cool battle based segment, where there is actually some link between story and gameplay as the Shifu feels weaker and Lei is becoming a powerhouse. But the coolest part of all? We fight the boss, Ou Di Wan lee, with Lei! This was a really cool moment that showed the shift in the story, Lei surpassing her master. And then it all ends as it began and Lei is ready to continue her Shifu’s legacy. Overall, a stellar chapter that is a treat both for new players to start with and old players to enjoy yet again. Twilight of Edo Japan: Let me preface this with the fact that I did a pacifist run of this chapter, so that may skew my opinions. With that being said, Twilight of Edo Japan is both incredibly rewarding and incredibly frustrating. There is a lot of freedom and exploration with how you tackle this chapter, but that can lead to a lack of direction and getting incredibly lost. A lot of this chapter is trial and error, as it is incredibly easy to get softlocked. The combat becomes stale after you unlock a few specific moves and the final few enemies that you face are a complete joke. Though when I got to the end, a new day dawning and the game acknowledging that I had gotten 0 kills, I felt extremely fulfilled. It was a tough challenge, but one I had surpassed.
Present Day: This chapter is easily the worst in the game. This is due to a complete lack of story and gameplay that actively requires you to be hit to get moves, which is actually really difficult somehow. At least it’s short and you can get it finished relativity quickly. This is as good a time as any to talk about the combat. Combat takes place on a grid, with you moving around and using moves of both physical and magical capacity. The combat is built around an action gage. All actions take a certain amount of time to do and certain abilities require time to charge. If an enemy is charging, you can interrupt them by knocking them back spaces or applying a stunning move. There are also weaknesses and resistances. Weaknesses deal extra damage, while resistances deal less. Though this may seem daunting, you’ll quickly pick this up and the combat system will feel incredibly fulfilling very quickly as well as super fun. Anyway, I guess we killed Odi O’Bright so let’s move on already.
Near Future: Ok this is a fever dream and I love it. The Near Future is a chapter about a psychic orphan and his robot turtle friend taking down a mecha god statue. This chapter plays like an anime with a deep and gripping story and incredibly fun gameplay where you fight armies of robots. The overworld exploration is incredibly fun and the story takes you by the hand and takes you on an emotional journey. Matsu’s death especially hit me hard. And by the end when you’re flying the steel titan? Incredible and climactic. I don’t really know what to say about this chapter, except I love it. Distant Future: This chapter makes me feel things. We begin with the creation of Cube and we meet Inventor Dad, also known as Kato. We are then introduced to the rest of the crew. Rachel, Kirk, Hewey and Darthe. A strength of this chapter is the complete lack of combat. It enhances the eerie atmosphere of this chapter and makes the Behemoth a nightmare. It immerses you in the fear. It also gives you a chance to learn about the characters and establish their dynamics and give them all coffee. Slowly but slowly, the chapter becomes more anxiety inducing and you worry for the safety of the final alive characters after the tragic deaths of Kirk, Hewey, Rachel and the captain. After Kato is attacked, Darthe and Cube form an unlikely alliance to finally confront OD-10, which we will do through the machine of Captain Square (That we will not talk about because it sucks.) And the OD-10 fight. So climactic and cool. It is such a fun fight and Cube is a powerhouse and badass. After kicking this robots butt, we get a monologue about the nature of humans. Darthe finally opens up to us about his hatred for robots in a scene that made me cry and we finally give him coffee, officially cementing his status as Corporal Dad. This scene made me cry. The Chapter ends as the three survivors return to earth. A truly emotional experience I thoroughly enjoyed.
Medieval: This chapter had one hell of a twist. What started out as your basic “knight saves the princess” story with some super fun gameplay morphed into a hero who was blamed for actions he didn’t really commit which then took a 180 heel turn into Pseudo-sympathetic Geocidal demon. The story starts out rather simply. Our main character, Oersted, is set to marry the princess. Unfortunately, she is kidnapped by the Lord of Dark. So we set out to save her. What ensues is a story of tragic deaths as we slowly lose faith in humanity as a whole all because of one incel who thought he deserved something more than a participation award. Shout out to Streighbow for being more hateable than most villains from other games I’ve played. Hasshe’s death wasn’t surprising but still hit me in the feels. The death of the king and the following mass murder of knights completely shook me. The death of Uranus was sad and made me feel horrible. The death of Alethea was insane and I just...don’t know how to feel. It was an emotional experience. And the heel turn twist in which Oersted becomes Odio? Magnificent. Overall, the Medieval chapter is an experience and I love it. The Dominion of Hate: The final, climactic chapter. I have very little to say about it except I think it’s cool how all the game times together, the final boss was climactic with a tough challenge, amazing designs and a banger score. And Sin of Odio? Literally everything I was seeking and everything I was hoping for. Using all 8 playable characters in one battle was so cool. Oersted’s final speech left me feeling bad for my demonic baby. And the end credits, where we see everyone moving forward with their lives was the cherry on top. All in all, Live a Live was an experience, one I highly recommend for all to play. It may be one of my favorite games of all time and with it’s stellar story and incredible gameplay on top of some of the best presentation and soundtrack, it should not be skipped.

Can't wait for your tungle post then! (twatter really crashing and burring tho)
LMAO I was just about to prep and post it-
OKAY SO, Live A Live hero/villain role reversal AU, hear me out, guys. @cheeseandcake-from-ao3 @mariogman25
In this alternate timeline, Oersted, defeated by the revived Lord of Dark, sends his spirit out across time and space to help seven heroes in the hope that they will come to his aid in exchange-
Prehistory - The Kuu Chief: A horrible siren of a woman keeps trying to bewitch young men, and the chief is trying his best to keep a member of an extinct dinosaur species alive. However, the witch sends men out to do her bidding and kill the innocent dinosaur.
Imperial China - The Sister Trio: Ou Di Wan Lee is a peaceful tutor training three youthful proteges in this universe! Things turn for the worst when he's injured and attacked by three bandits!
Edo Japan - Miyamoto Musashi: Revived from the dead by a lord, he and his fellow spirits have been tasked with deposing the leader of a cruel ninja clan that can murder 100 people in a single night.
Wild West - Pike: A bumbling drunkard is suddenly tasked with taking down the bounty of the most wanted man in the west. Despite all odds and being in competition with an arrogant hotshot, he manages to succeed!
Modern Day: Uhhh, I don't know about this one actually, if anyone has a good write-in idea let me know lmao.
Near Future - Priest Unryu: An old, noble priest is tasked by General Yamazaki with reviving an angel, in order to combat the rogue Steel Titan, which was activated by a punk gang. Much like Lawless in the original timeline, Yamazaki sacrifices himself in order to try to stop the military base from being destroyed.
Distant Future - The Behemoth: An alien creature is kidnapped against her will and separated from her family. Taking pity on her, the ship's AI tries to help her escape from her captors.
After helping all seven heroes, Oersted pleads with them for his freedom, for the original Lord of Dark has taken over Lucrece.
