Another day, another new face in Hollow Port. You’d think they’d be used to it by now. Skylar keeps their fan close to their face, as not to reveal their fangs, don’t want any possible hunters getting any ideas.

“I do hope Hollow Port’s night life is treating you well. A lot goes on in town, but it’s nice to just take a stroll around and bask in the neon lights.” 

Allison always did tell them to “be more social” and “make more friends,” let’s hope they’re not blowing the small talk. Plus, it’s just curtesy to welcome a guest or possible new resident to town. Him being handsome certainly helps...

She takes a minute to look over at Due, smiling a bit. Poor dear must’ve been worried sick.

Fall. People. The Vytal Festival. Oh, what wonders the lovely city of Vale had to offer. Hosting the Annual Vytal Festival this year proved to be a treat for many of the outside students visiting the illustrious place. However, for one person in particular, he wasn’t the most thrilled about it. While his teammates thought differently, he much preferred a more quiet place. In doing so, he’d take time to himself to see the different venues and shops Vale had to offer.

Place by place, some did get his attention while others just didn’t. The further out he went, the less busy most of them seemed, even seeing some closed.

That aside, one did catch his attention; a rather decent sized one that seemed a little less busy than the rest around the lot.

He’d poke his head inside to see; no one else was really around, but the shelves were full. 

Perfect.

An excellent time to enjoy an interesting browse while basically having the place to himself.

2017 was the year of numbers: AI, YCombinator and investment funds

As we start 2018 lets review some stories that covered AI, an industry that has gained recognition as one of the leading subjects in tech.  Last year Intel acquired Mobileye, a vision-based driver-assistance systems that provides warnings for collision prevention and mitigation. Below is a recap on TechCrunch’s story.

 Intel buys Mobileye in $15.3B deal, moves its automotive unit to Israel

Intel has confirmed that it is acquiring Mobileye, a leader in computer vision for autonomous driving technology, for $15.3 billion — the biggest-ever acquisition of an Israeli tech company.

Mobileye today covers a range of technology and services, including sensor fusion, mapping, front- and rear-facing camera tech and, beginning in 2018, crowdsourcing data for high-definition maps, as well as driving policy intelligence underlying driving decisions.

Intel has been working officially with Mobileye since last year. Earlier this year, with BMW, the two started to test 40 self-driving cars equipped with the two companies’ technology. Mobileye was also an early partner of Tesla’s for its autonomous technology, although that relationship is ending amid some controversial undertones about safety measures at the carmaker. Other investments that Intel has made in the space of cars include taking a stake in Here (which will feed into the mapping initiatives at Mobileye); acquiring Itseez and Yogitech for safety and navigation functionalities in autonomous cars; making a commitment of at least $250 million to the space (which sounds so tiny considering today’s price tag).

 Intel Unveils Neural Compute Engine in Movidius Myriad X VPU to Unleash AI at the Edge

Intel introduced its new Movidius Myriad X vision processing unit (VPU), advancing Intel’s end-to-end portfolio of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to deliver more autonomous capabilities across a wide range of product categories including drones, robotics, smart cameras and virtual reality.

Myriad X is world’s first system-on-chip (SOC) shipping with a dedicated Neural Compute Engine for accelerating deep learning inferences at the edge.

  Investment funds:

There were a handful of announcements of big companies launching their investment funds to further develop technological gaps they might be experiencing.

 Samsung is launching a $150M fund to invest in emerging tech startups

The Samsung NEXT Fund is a $150 million venture fund targeted at early-stage startups working in emerging tech.

Specifically, they will be looking for companies focused on virtual reality, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and “other new frontier technologies.”

So far the fund has invested in 10 startups: Converge Industries, Dashbot, Entry Point VR, Filament, Intezer, LiquidSky, Otto Radio, 2Sens, SafeDK and Virtru. These companies range from a VR animation studio to water monitoring sensors for your appliances — signaling that NEXT will stay pretty broad with its investments.

 Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi launches $1 billion corporate venture capital fund

Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi, has launched a $1 billion corporate venture capital fund to focus on investments in “new mobility” including electrification, autonomous systems, network connectivity and artificial intelligence.

Called Alliance Ventures, the fund has already made its first investment, taking an equity stake for an undisclosed amount in Ionic Materials — a Bill Joy-backed battery technology developer.

Cambridge Bio-Augmentation Systems – Plug-and-play standard for human bionics

CBAS wants to be the USB port for the human body. The startup has developed a low-cost implant that can connect any bionic device, like artificial limbs, to any part of the body, and give patients control of their prostheses. It also created the first live streaming nerve implant to gather data from a pig’s leg. CBAS wants to be the standard on which all bionic implants build. Just for amputees, this could be a $9 billion a year market, and now 10 companies have switched to the CBAS standard.

Cowlar – Fitbit for cows

It’s way smarter than it sounds. Cowlar makes a special collar for cows that tracks their temperature, activity and other data, and makes it available to farmers. It can recognize a cow with an infected hoof from the change in its gait, or identify that a cow is pregnant and will eventually produce milk. Cowlar costs $69 per cow with a $3 per month subscription, and provides a solar-powered “cow router” that collects data from the collars. It already has 600 cows on the platform, with 7,200 on the waitlist, and has alerted farmers about 103 sick cows. It already has the opportunity to build an $11 billion business on milk cows, and could enter the 3X-bigger beef cow market next. While the idea might seem ridiculous, cows are a huge part of the economy, and more data on them leads to more revenue from them.

Volans-i – B2B drone delivery

Amazon promised consumer drone delivery via Amazon PrimeAir but you likely don’t need a toothbrush in your backyard via drone. Businesses, however, do need deliveries fast, and volans-i aims to speedily deliver those shipments door-to-door via drone. For example, a company may need a certain part delivered to keep up with production. Volans-i steers its drones to this company with up to 50 lbs of payload going 1,000 miles — or 15,000 shipments per year per customer, according to the company. Volans-i’s team comes from strong industry backgrounds including Northrup Grumman, and the company believes it can save time and money for a number of business categories, including high-tech, aviation, medical, oil and gas, automotive and manufacturing.

Delee – A blood test for circulating tumor cells

Cancer is one of the biggest killers in the U.S. and Delee aims to take on the “emperor of all maladies” with a blood test device able to isolate tumor cells. The patent-pending device aims to personalize cancer treatments based on a new approach.The founding team comes from Stanford and the Rochester Institute of Technology and works in biomedical engineering; the startup has already run a successful clinical trial using 15 patients, isolating tumor cells for 13 of them. Delee aims to take on bigger companies working in the same space, like Grail, and take on a $2 billion market.

Indee – Hardware for gene delivery

Indee provides a new way to use CRISPR to edit the genome of cells. Current methods of editing genes include using viruses or electroporation, but Indee uses microturbulence to dissolve molecules within a cell. It currently is targeting a $1.5 billion addressable market for immunotherapy, but sees that market growing to $9 billion as the market improves.

Allison was always good at telling when someone was creeping up behind her. Being a woman in this era that kind of skill could save your damn life. However, she knew exactly who was behind her, plus she knew what day it was. She happily played dumb, blissfully humming as she walked along the sidewalk as her darling knight crept up behind her.

She lets out a tiny squeak as Due's lips made contact with her cheek and it was followed by a squeal of delight as she glances at the beautiful gifts that her darling knight got for her. The guy really knows how to make her feel like a Queen!

"Duey!! Thank you~!! You're the best you know that!?"

Allison returns the kiss he gave her with one of her own, turning to hug him and take the flowers.

Clone Conspiracy #5 Reset A Key Aspect of Spider-Man’s World

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for “The Clone Conspiracy” #5 by Dan Slott and Jim Cheung, on sale now.

Dan Slott and Jim Cheung close out the latest Spider-Man clone saga in “The Clone Conspiracy” #5, but while it’s an ending, the issue also serves as a new beginning of sorts for Spidey’s world. The event has featured the return of several supporting characters, or reasonable facsimiles thereof – some of them well-known and remembered, and others who had been nearly forgotten. The conclusion of Slott’s event seemingly institutes a sense of finality regarding the fate of some of these characters, while leaving a path for others to potentially return, possibly changing the dynamic of Spider-Man’s world in the wake of the story as well as several of the cast members who inhabit it.

The Extent of Dead No More Is Revealed

The “Dead No More” tag had been attached to this storyline months before it began, and its meanings had been many – it was applicable to the return of Ben Reilly, clone of Peter Parker and the one character in the Spider-Man mythos who many had concluded would never be seen again. Slott’s story hook also earlier teased the return of Uncle Ben – a notion that was dispelled midway through. In more general terms, though, the phrase was fittingly tied to the actual return of familiar friends and foes alike, from Gwen Stacy to Otto Octavius, and the resolution of “Clone Conspiracy” provides the scope of this revelation; in short, most any character once dead is ripe for eventual return, and very few of them need be dead no more.

This revelation is made possible thanks to Peter Parker’s technological knowhow, after he hacks into Parker Industries webware worldwide and broadcasts the sonic frequency counteracting the one that had been unleashed by The Jackal last issue to accelerate the decay of his creations. This includes the regenerated members of Peter / Spidey’s supporting cast who had been living within New U’s Haven facility — or, at least, most of them. While several are revealed to have already disintegrated (among others, Gwen Stacy and Marla Jameson are shown as dissolved into dust, while The Prowler’s clone and Jean DeWolff are mentioned), there are many more who remain unharmed, and unnamed.

Having fled Haven during the chaos, the potential for most of Spidey’s once-dead friends and foes – including those not specifically shown in the storyline – now have the potential to return at any time. So while Uncle Ben remains safe in the afterlife (for now), and the characters mentioned above are seemingly off the table, the future return of anyone ranging from Jack o’Lantern to Nick Katzenburg is made a little more plausible by way of Slott’s story. Peter’s past promise that “no one dies” is slated to take on a new meaning that he likely never envisioned.

Ben Reilly Bites The Dust. Again. For Now…

While all of the clones who decomposed within the story are implied to be gone for good, the series’ most notorious character has been set up to be the most notable exception. Not only serving as the storyline’s only known clone-of-a-clone, Reilly is also the only clone to be genetically strengthened by Miles Warren’s twisted scientific experimentations on him. Reilly disintegrates along with Octavius during their climactic battle, and while the finale is structured to imply that Reilly is gone, other factors indicate otherwise, the most prominent one being the upcoming “Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider” series by and Mark Bagley.

Reilly’s unique background and multiple regenerations offer a possible clue as to his pending return. After Peter and Anna Maria Marconi observe the remains of Reilly and Octavius in the battle’s aftermath, Anna makes a reference to “the ultimate template,” the clone prototype Reilly had shown her earlier in the event, tempting her with the promise of a body free of genetic defects. Reilly has already been set up as the series’ character slated to come back from literal certain death, and his upcoming return indicates that this template is something Reilly could have already used to augment himself, or perhaps the proto-clone is Reilly’s next body. The genetic manipulation that enables Reilly to return to life with comparative ease, and in perfect form, could indeed serve as a template that could be applied to others, postulating what’s essentially the promise of potential eternal life.

Who Else Will Be Dead No More? Place Your Bets

With the notion of death now being established as even more of a revolving door back to life than a barrier to it than we’ve ever seen before in the Marvel Universe, the possibilities of who just might walk through that door are many. Some, like Uncle Ben, still carry a reverence that Marvel Comics’ writers and editors don’t seem ready to defile, and others, like Jean DeWolff, are unlikely to be resurrected for other reasons. Most others, though, stand a pretty fair chance of returning.

Otto Octavius is an odds-on favorite to be one of them; it’s unlikely he would finally be brought back as the classic incarnation of Doctor Octopus only to be killed off again for good. After Ock committed the ultimate crime against Peter by taking control of his body and usurping his life for a time as the Superior Spider-Man, Peter still has that longstanding grudge to settle, and it’s one that hasn’t really been addressed since Peter’s return amidst all of the other Spider-events. And, Octavius’ remains likely mixed with those of Reilly’s after they dissolved, so some of that ultimate template DNA is a more than a little likely to literally rub off on Ock.

Gwen Stacy, besides her cloned self being prominently featured in this series, is currently starring in a title of her own, albeit as the alternate versions known as Spider-Gwen. With all of this demand for Gwen, and with Peter back to being his old bachelor self for the past decade or so, there’s really no reason not to bring back the “real” Gwen into the “real” Marvel Universe. Besides, the character has been in woeful need of a fashion overhaul since the ’70s; every time she’s supposedly been brought back, she somehow feels the need to bring her miniskirt and headband with her. It would be nice to see how the classic Gwen would play out in the modern world, if for no other reason than to see her adapt to modern styles.

Lastly, the classic Green Goblin, whether as a clone of Norman Osborn, Harry, or someone else entirely, has been a long-missed villain in Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery, and deserves to reclaim his place. While only an extra in “The Clone Conspiracy,” the character was seen in the background enough times to indicate that he didn’t simply flee Haven only to never be seen again. Indeed, he’s been revealed as the main protagonist in “Amazing Spider-Man” once artist Stuart Immonen joins Dan Slott on Spidey’s flagship series.

The saga isn’t quite over; the story of The Rhino carries over into “The Clone Conspiracy Omega” #1, on sale March 1. Ben Reilly’s new life – that is, his latest one – picks up in “Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider” #1, on sale April 26.
