This time last year I was getting a mare I know ready for races, a year later I'm getting her ready for horse shows.🦄 Turning 15 has been pretty good for Quinn. 💕

can any of you tell me your experiences with Standardbreds? i want to rescue one but my trainer and my mom keep telling me not to get one because all they can do is pace and theyll never be able to jump, canter, or even trot normally. i know they have great potential but they wont listen to me.

Hey, you own a horse, right? Can you help me with something?
How on earth do you find horses of a specific breed to purchase? Let alone breeds of horses that are affordable? It's my dream horse but I just don't have 15000+ to spend on a Kladruber! I wish horse people knew that not everyone in the horse world is shitting 100 dollar bills.
Yep, I own a horse.
You typically find horses of a certain breed to purchase by getting in area horse selling groups on Facebook or with breeders of your desired breed. For instance, my area is saturated with quarter horses, paints, and horses of somewhat questionable gaited lineage (typically some degree of Tennessee walking horse). And of course you’ll occasionally find OTTB or OTSB’s that are either ready for restarting or partially restarted, in addition to the plethora of grade horses (mine included). These are pretty cheap, ranging from $500 to $3000 - the younger or older they are, the cheaper they become. When I was looking for a horse, I joined a horse group centered around Lexington KY so I could take a look at all the OTTB’s and see if there was anything I could use (I couldn’t). If I was in the market for something *really nice* but didn’t care what breed, I would join some of the New England, Aiken, Ocala, or central VA groups because there are a lot of nice warmbloods in those areas. And then, if I really wanted a specific breed, I would either have to join a breed-specific national group, follow some breeders on Facebook, or search overseas, depending on the breed.
$15,000 is honestly pretty low for a warmblood at the moment. Horse prices are way up. I bought mine a year ago for “only” $8500 primarily because she is grade, “older” (because 13 is older than a lot of people want) and isn’t really athletic enough to go beyond novice or training level and isn’t an easy ride. If I wanted a novice level packer, or something that might go prelim or above, or honestly anything with any kind of nice breeding or papers, any kind of show or hunt record, or that showed even a smidgen of talent or nice movement, I’d be looking at $25-30k minimum. An uncommon breed like a Kladruber would be a lot more. You might be able to save money by purchasing a foal in utero or at weaning, or even buying a broodmare that is already in foal to a nice stallion or comes with a breeding to a nice stallion. However, I am neither willing to train a horse from the ground up, nor buy something I can’t test ride first, so that would be an additional risk.

Every time someone tells me I will "get nowhere" on a standardbred have a fundamental misunderstanding of my goals as a horseperson and also apparently of the standardbred as a breed.
