Maedhros, Finrod, Fingolfin for the ask game?

Anon; I am so sorry this took like... seven years- So, without further ado;

Maedhros:

favorite thing about them: His strength of will.

least favorite thing about them: Um, the oath, the kinslayings etc-

favorite line: 'But how shall our voices reach to Ilúvatar beyond the Circles of the World? And by Ilúvatar we swore in our madness, and called the Everlasting Darkness upon us, if we kept not our word. Who shall release us?' (GAH)

brOTP: Him, Fingon and Finrod; I just feel like they'd get along well, if not perfectly, not in the least because they all have semi (and in some cases, fully) feral younger siblings they have to deal with.

OTP: Russingon

nOTP: Sauron and/or morgoth

random headcanon: Makes really bad hand related jokes; but he's got a very deadpan style of delivery so no one who doesn't know him very well knows if they should laugh or not.

unpopular opinion: I don't know. I definitely see Maedhros as a paradox of sorts, kingly and not, this fic really just solidified that characterization for me, although I'm not sure if that's necessarily unpopular.

Fingolfin:

Favorite thing about them: Ooh, tough one, but I think I'd have to say determination/endurance? Like. Listen. Man crosses the Helcaraxe, which is no walk in the park, out of spite, likely to punch his half-brother in the face. (Or at least in part, anyways)

Although, too bad Feanor's dead by the time Fingolfin gets there but eh.

least favorite thing about them: I mean, idk, I can't think of a specific canon thing, but Fingolfin is one of the characters we don't get too much personality-wise on.

favorite line: I'm fairly certain this is specific to something spoken by them, and we have exactly four direct quotes from Fingolfin. (That does narrow it down though, I suppose)

"Half-brother in blood, full brother in heart will I be. Thou shalt lead and I will follow. May no new grief divide us." I just- I need a minute.

brOTP: Fingolfin & Lalwen. I feel like, while Fingolfin definitely is close to Findis and Finarfin, his and Lalwen's personalities are are just closer to each other's.

OTP: Anaire

nOTP: Idek, Feanor?

random headcanon: Fingolfin looks like Finwe the most, and Feanor and Finarfin take most after Miriel and Indis respectively, and I feel like that definitely contributed to Feanor's resentment of him, in some form. I haven't actually done anything with this headcanon though, it's just. there

unpopular opinion: I don't know if it's unpopular, per se, but I think that Fingolfin's charge at Morgoth while perhaps not the smartest thing to do, gave his people a much needed moral victory, that Morgoth wasn't invincible and they could actually hurt him. Though the Silm specifies Beren and Luthien being the inspiration for the Union of Maedhros, I think Fingolfin (who fell under the Doom of the Noldor) was a substantial part of that too. I really, really hope that made sense

song i associate with them: Time Stands Still at the Iron Hill Okay, aside from songs that are like, actually about fingolfin, I don't really have one?

favorite picture of them: Pretty much any piece of fanart in general, but also this one!

Finrod:

favorite thing about them: Finrod's wisdom, perhaps?

least favorite thing about them: Oof, it's a tie between the condesencion towards Andreth in the Athrabeth during that One part specifically, and the whole deal with the petty-dwarves in the caves of nargothrond.

favorite line: I had to actually look up if Finrod actually talks during the silm, and he only does so twice (I think, I may have missed a bit) so I opted for this instead:

"They buried the body of Felagund upon the hill-top of his own isle, and it was clean again; and the green grave of Finrod Finarfin's son, fairest of all the princes of the Elves, remained inviolate, until the land was changed and broken, and foundered under destroying seas. But Finrod walks with Finarfin his father beneath the trees in Eldamar."

brOTP: Finrod and the Companions, and Finrod & his siblings tbh.

OTP: I don't know. Finrod is like, one of the most shippable characters I can think of. But Finrod/Edrahil is definitely near the top of the list tbh.

nOTP: Sauron, I guess.

random headcanon: Finrod would definitely be best friends with Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Tuor and Gimli and you can pry that headcanon from my cold, dead hands.

unpopular opinion: Hm. There's this fic and in it there's a part where Finrod is like, "we may not have killed the Teleri, but we were willing to profit off the kinslayings and that makes us guilty too" and that just. resonated I guess, because I definitely feel like Finrod and the Arafinweans in particular are treated as if they were wholly innocent from the kinslayings/doom of mandos, which I don't think is particularly true.

An Oath to Return

SoKai Week Day 5 - Tanabata/Star-Crossed Lovers

Word Count: 1,663

He’s late. But by now, Kairi expects as much.

She sits on the ledge of a fountain, immaculate in its detail and proud in its stature. Nice and snug in her pink yukata with white flower embroidery trailing down the right and the checkered purple obi that binds her waist, she waits patiently as she watches the children attempting to play despite their limited movement, the couples walking hand in hand, and the numerous booths and games on display with prizes for the taking.

Still no sign of him. Despite the sigh that escapes her, her smile doesn’t waver. Even though it would have been nice if he were a bit more on top of things, Kairi wouldn’t have him any other way.

Just as her eyes propelled to the sky glittered in stars, she hears a voice.

“Kairi!”

Right on cue. She snaps her head in the direction of the sound to find her favorite lazy bum scrambling towards her, his movement stiff due to his dark grey yukata with horizontal light streaks streaming downwards. He nearly bumps into someone carrying a recently won goldfish and apologizes profusely, the distraction doing little to derail his attention from Kairi for too long. She giggles as she clasps her hands together and rises to her feet just in time for him to reach her.

“Hey! Sorry I’m a little late, something came up a little unexpectedly,” Sora apologizes, rubbing the back of his head. “I hope I didn’t make you wait too long, at least. It was just, uh… kinda urgent.”

She sends a knowing look accompanied by a smirk. “You took a nap, didn’t you?”

“Whaaat? Of course not!” he denies. Kairi rests her fists against her hips, dipping down as her eyebrow arches in a way that intensifies her smirk even further. “O-okay, so maybe I napped... a little.” Sora emphasizes this by pinching the air with his index finger and thumb.

Kairi grins triumphantly. “Should I really have expected any less of you, Sora?”

“It’s not what you think, though. Naminé wanted to look through my memories to see if there was anything she could find that might help us with, y’know, the current situation,” he nearly trails off before he perks back up, scratching his cheek with a bashful smile. “And, well, I kinda had to be asleep for it. That’s all.”

Kairi smiles as well, though it’s laced with a tinge of bittersweetness. “Well, in that case, I suppose you’re forgiven.”

“Thanks! I was real worried that—”

The sudden warm of her arms wrapped around his torso quickly puts Sora into a trance. For a brief instant, his mind wanders back to the time when they found each other in the original Organization’s stronghold and soon he returns the embrace.

“As long as you’re here, that’s all that matters to me,” Kairi says, nuzzling into his chest. “Let’s just... make the most of today, okay?”

Sora nods, his eyes firm before he pulls back and sends an assuring smile in hopes of lifting her spirits. “Just like we always do.”

They wander the busy festival streets with their fingers laced together under a beautiful starry sky, making sure to check out all the attractions and games at their disposal. As he walks with Kairi with their hands intertwined, being able to hear the soft giggles and witness her kind smile in person, he thinks just how much this feels right. Even the little things she did found a way to make his heart swoon.

Meanwhile, Kairi adores the way Sora’s eyes light up whenever something catches his attention. The way he pulls and drags her in every which way looking to find adventure in every corner of the festival.

After they both write and hang their wishes on their tanzaku, both having an inkling of what the other wishes for though neither mentions it, Sora leads Kairi to a hill on the outskirts that gives them a view of the whole festival. From here, they can take in the ornate lights hung in droves, the fluctuating colors uniting together in harmony.

She rests her head on his shoulder, shutting her eyes as she feels his warmth pressing against her cheek. Watching her almost angelic face is enough to make Sora’s heart flutter.

“This is the way it should be,” Kairi says. “I wish we could just stay like this. Forever.”

Forever.

Suddenly, the air grew tense, as if something taboo had been said. Sora keeps his sights set on the grass while Kairi draws invisible circles on the ground. It’s a reality neither wants to accept, but know they’ll have to face. Sooner, rather than later.

Sora looks down at his hand and watches as it almost looks like translucent glass. He sighs before putting on a smile. “Kairi, I have something for you.”

“Huh?” Kairi asks, lifting up from his side as she sends her wide, curious eyes and a slight tilt of her head. Sora chuckles at her reaction.

“Close your eyes,” he requests.

Kairi doesn’t hesitate to comply.

“Hold out your hand.”

Kairi does as told and feels a paper-like substance enter her palm only a moment later. She rubs her thumb across the paper-like texture and concludes in her head that it’s... shaped like a star?

“Okay, you can open them,” Sora says.

The first thing Kairi sees is a somewhat spotty-looking star about the same size as the lucky charm she gave him years prior. Indeed, it is a wayfinder made of leaves tied together with less than grace and on the top leaf there is a face with eyelashes and deep blue eyes. She assumes it must be Sora’s attempt at drawing her face the same way she had drawn him years ago.

“I’m not the best at sewing seashells,” Sora admits, scratching the back of his head. “I know it isn’t the best, but I kind of had to improvise since the seashell thing didn’t really work out.”

Kairi’s lips part for a brief instant before she closes her eyes and reopens them with a gracious smile. “I love it.”

“Really?” Sora asks in disbelief.

Kairi giggles. “Of course. It’s so thoughtful of you.”

“Well, I just figured... I wanted to double our promise.”

He pulls out his own good luck charm Kairi had given him.

“Now, one for the both of us,” Sora says. “Who knows? Maybe it’ll be double the good luck!”

With a sheen of water shimmering over her eyes, Kairi holds it up to the moonlit sky. “It’s beautiful.”

Sora smiles as well. “I know one person that has it beat by a couple of miles.”

Kairi feels the heat rise to her cheeks, but the giddiness never leaves the ends of her lips. “Delightfully corny, as usual. But I wouldn’t have you any other way.”

Sora smiles as they both cuddled together, embracing each other and their final moments. It has been like this for the past few years. Two years and they still hadn’t found a way to bring Sora back to their realm. But for some reason, whether it be fate by whatever deities exist or the universe just having mercy on them, Sora miraculously returned to the Realm of Light on the week of Tanabata. It was a week Sora and Kairi always make sure to make the most of each and every day.

But the hardest part was saying goodbye.

And it always happens on the final day of Tanabata. For the past few years, they made a habit out of coming to this very same spot and watching the stars twinkle above them as Sora slowly faded away.

You’re only everything I’ve ever dreamed...

Despite their gratefulness for being granted the time that they’ve been given, it never made it any easier. The curse placed upon Sora for his abuse of the power of waking had taken a toll on their longing for each other, but in moments like these, despite the hurt, they still had latent hope that one day this will be over.

It helps that the sky is mesmerizing.

Ever dreamed of, ever dreamed of...

They hold each other’s hands tight, neither letting go as they keep close. The wind quietly whistles as it gently caresses their hair.

You must be kidding me, did you really think... I could say no...

Sora feels it coming. He turns to her and Kairi hesitates, but finds the willpower to sit up from her position, away from his warmth and into the familiarity of the cold loneliness of her usual day-to-day life. But neither let the other’s hand go.

I want you for a lifetime, but if you gotta think twice... baby...

“Kairi...” Sora says. “I think it’s time for me to go.”

Despite how heart aches, Kairi nods understandably. “I know.”

I don’t wanna know, baby... I don’t wanna know...

With equally sad smiles, they close the gap between them and press their lips together. Kairi deepens the kiss as a tear streams down her left cheek. How bittersweet. How could something be so bittersweet and tear her apart all at the same time?

Everything is just right, but if you gotta think twice, baby... I don’t wanna know, baby...

As they part, Sora grips her hand tighter. “I’ll come back to you. I promise.”

She grips his hand back just as hard despite the fact she feels herself slowly beginning to grip nothing but air. “I know you will.”

And just like that, he’s gone.

It’s just her again.

But this time, she looks down at the lucky charm he gives her and sees the determined smile he drew of Kairi. She sniffs, wiping away her tears as she looks up to the sky. An act of forbidden love. But she remembers something that Aqua told her once. And with this trinket of hers, she knows it’s an oath to his return.

“There’s always a way.”

I don’t wanna know...

Character ask Puck

PUCK

Favorite thing about them: He is a sassy and funny prankster, one of my favorite character archetipes. Interestingly, when we first meet Puck, he appears to be just malicious trough and trough. And while yes, he actually enjoys causing misery to humans for his own amusement, we see that he genuinelly feels pity for some characters like Helena, and regrets his mistake of exchanging Demétrius for Lisander on the aplication of the love potion spell. On those instances, we see that Puck has a slightly innocent side that makes him adorable.

Least favorite thing about them: I was originally going to say none, but maybe the fact that he sides with Oberon on tricking Titânia to fall in love with Donkey! Bottom so she feels humiliated and ends giving up the Changeling Child may feel subject to criticism. Buuut... it was never something that contradicts his character, who was extablished as being far removed from human morality and cares mostly with what is fun for him. So i don’t see it as big of a deal.

Unpopular Opinion: I don’t have any. I just love this sprite so much.

For a character: Maedhros

How I feel about this character

How do I not feel about this character? Is there an off switch?

For real though, Maedhros is such an insanely complex character for having so few overall lines written about him. Every single thing jrrt wrote about him just leaves me with 8000 more questions.

We canonically know basically nothing other than: he was a dutiful son who was doomed as soon as he lifted his blade on the shores of Aman, he had a shadow of pain upon his heart and a great hatred of orcs that burnt so hot his eyes burnt as a pale white flame, and that he was a skilled negotiator who met with a tragic end over an oath too hastily spoken. There is so little overall detail about him but just those few things we know make for such a compelling character. He has an infinite sort of potential about him and his motivations and it really does make for endless headcanoning. I could poke around in Maedhros’ psyche for years and probably never get bored.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Honestly I get weirded out when I see him paired with anyone but Fingon. I forget that they’re not actually canon. He doesn’t really have any canonical connection to any other character and no one could ever top “going on a suicide mission to save your asshole ex-best friend because even though you hate him you also love him and would surely fade yourself if you left him in that dark place”.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

AZAGHÂL!!! I hc them as drinking buddies. Maedhros is the only elf Azaghâl can stand because he’s straight forward and not as off-puttingly symmetrical as the rest of them, despite maedhros being 3.4 azaghâls in total height. Their friendship is very hard on maedhros’ poor knees.

My unpopular opinion about this character

Idk it seems to be a popular opinion (at least, based on what recs I see people give) that Maedhros becomes ~uwu tortured baby~ after angband and needs to be coddled and completely relearn like every aspect of existing and it just… is not realistic for a man who went on to build one of the greatest fortresses beleriand ever saw and sat on the enemy’s front porch with a giant middle finger while commanding several armies and constantly being a general pain in the ass for hundreds of years to really be reduced to that.

I believe maedhros represses the shit out of everything that happened to him in angband and actively disassociates through large portions of the day in order to get shit done. he has no concept of a healthy mental state and doesn’t really seek to heal, and only to keep fighting until he hopefully dies. the only time he lets himself be weak is when he is utterly alone, and even then he hates himself for it. he never looks at his own body if he can help it and the only time he feels comfortable letting his guard down is when he is alone with fingon. idk if this is unpopular i am basically just summarizing a fic that i am writing at this point

another unpopular opinion: maedhros keeps his hair short after angband as his long copper hair was used against him in many torturous ways. he waits until he can get a handful around it and then hacks it with a blade. he uses hair pulling as an act of self-harm and even long after he’s mastered some of his other instinctual reactions he will still flinch if someone tries to touch his hair. he lets fingon comb it after they’ve been together for a long time but even then he can barely stand it.

one more while im at it: i don’t think his relationship with elros and elrond was healthy or particularly happy. he was at his lowest point when he took them in as not-quite-but-basically-hostages and that doesn’t lend itself to being a good parental figure. he might have cared about them but he was not a good role model. he taught them how to fight and discouraged any further closeness between them, if it was sought at all.

is this an unpopular opinion? maedhros would never have gone through with the 2nd and 3rd kinslayings if fingon had lived. he could not bear to disappoint him like that, not again

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I wish he would get a hug like at least once

barring that, since that is unrealistic, thanks jrrt, I have made a post about this in the past, but without like my dreams of him being happy being made reality the smallest canon-compliant change I could think of would be to have him realize at the end that his Oath was just words, and never held any power over him, and have that be what push him over the edge. I think it would have made for a more powerful message, but I don’t think it’s what Tolkien intended.

There is a power in words, yes, but there is also a power in actions, and in the end it’s about what you choose rather than what you have promised. Maedhros could have forsworn his oath and be potentially doomed to the eternal Void rather than kill the hundreds of elves he ended up murdering but he chose not to, and that is what he realises after he obtains the silmaril, and that is why he takes his own life; for the shame that he could not bear, and the excuse he could no longer cling to as justification.

I wrote this fic as a gift for my Internet wife and best friend, @ship-ambrosia, whose birthday is today. Thank you for everything you've done for me, Bree. The end of March was coming close for the people of Fiore, bringing the joy that Spring always made sure to gift the people with. However, in a rather small city called Magnolia, there was something rather peculiar going on. There was a violent snowstorm raging and slicing through the pathways and abandoned houses of the settlement, the wind whistling and inviting his snowflake comrades to join the tempest. As she sat down and watched the frozen fractals dancing in the air, Juvia’s eyes were glued to the window, waiting for her beloved to return to the place that called their home. She remembered the times they spent together in his apartment, and she was still stunned by Gray’s decision to move with him and not leave the house, under any circumstances; a decision he took a few months ago, due to a certain reason. Soon, the Water Mage’s thoughts were somewhere else.

After a dire battle with the Dragon Gods, the White Mage and the Dragon Eaters, Gray had finally decided to do what he had told Juvina; he went and got the woman that loved him unconditionally for years (a manly action, according to Elfman). The moment he finally gave her the answer he had promised that day on the bridge, her heart was beating in a frenzy, as her stomach flipped and her mind flopped. As she finally found out the meaning of her beloved’s words, the bluenette’s eyes were invaded by tears that shortly left to flood the Guild’s backyard, earning a strong reaction from those present, Gray included. The days that followed were blissful for her. She had never expected his touches to feel so… warm.

His caresses, his kisses, his words were warming her from inside out, and it didn’t take them too long to get to the next step of their relationship. Mouth to mouth and chest to chest, they poured all their feelings in their touches and whispered calls, and would always end up falling asleep in each other’s arms, Juvia’s head always finding rest against Gray’s heart. However, one certain night ended up in a different way than expected.

A few weeks later, they found themselves reminiscing the event that had brought them together and strengthened their bond: the day Invel forced them to fight each other, a day that left both emotional and physical scars. Shortly after, Gray found himself getting drowned in Juvia’s affection once more, as she also shared the thought that had been travelling through her mind. An unexpected visit to the ill-tempered Porlyusica had ultimately confirmed her suspicion: under Juvia’s heart, a new life had already begun to bloom.

The news of a new member joining them soon had the Guild go on a state of pure joy. All their guildmates were screaming “Congratulations!” from the top of their lungs; even the Master was elated to find out that he would have another great-grandchild. Soon after, a party was thrown to celebrate the joyful event, as the Water Mage found herself bombarded with advice from Levy and Bisca, and the Ice Mage got his own tips from Alzack and Gajeel, with some bonus threats from the Iron Dragon Slayer.

As her pregnancy advanced, Juvia found herself incapable of performing magic the way she used to – she had gotten slower, and her focus wasn’t on the world around her as often – all that mattered was the development of her unborn child. However, little did she know that this might’ve been the nail in the coffin for her.

“I’m home!” Gray’s voice interrupted Juvia’s train of thoughts, as she watched her boyfriend take off his shoes. He then went her way, gave her a smile and brushed his lips against hers.

“Welcome home, Gray. How was the job?”

“It went well. It was exhausting, and someone whose name I won’t give,” he muttered “Flame Brain” between his coughs, “almost got the town we were supposed to protect, destroyed. Luckily, we managed to stop him and finish the job. How about you?” Gray asked, pressing his palm on his girlfriend’s growing belly, being rewarded with a small push against his hand.

“The same things that Juvia has done for months; eat, sleep, gestate and repeat,” she chuckled. “Oh, and Levy and the twins paid Juvia a visit.” she beamed; she always loved spending time with the two azure-haired children, and the feeling was mutual. However, the smile on her lips didn’t last long, as a frown adorned on her face, her brows furrowing and her fingers intertwining. “Gray…” she hesitated. She really didn’t want to anger him, but the growing frustration was eating her at the core. “Can Juvia leave our home, even for a few moments, please? She really misses everyone else in the Guild.”

The moment those words came out of Juvia’s mouth, Gray stood up straight in front of her, his fists clenching, a dark gaze sent Juvia’s way. “You know very well what my answer’s gonna be, don’t you?” the words left his mouth on a harsher tone than he intended.

“Juvia knows, but she can’t stay anymore in our home, doing nothing but stay in bed and eat. Juvia wants to see the streets of Magnolia again, and not from a window. She misses the Guild–”

“Juvia, my answer is still no. Please understand that.” Gray muttered, gritting his teeth, and the temperature dropping a few degrees lower. Why couldn’t she see he was doing all of this for their sake, for her and their child’s sake?!

“Gray, please. Juvia knows you just want to keep Juvia and our child safe,” she replied, a hand on her belly “but she doesn’t believe that the way you intend to do this is the best. Juvia is not a little girl, she will be more careful this time around; just trust her – “

“JUVIA!” Gray snapped, pieces of ice appearing and shattering around him just as soon as they were created. The Water Mage’s eyes widened and her breath froze inside her lungs, as she found herself wrapping her arms around her belly. She knew Gray would never hurt her, but her maternal instincts kicked in faster than imagined. When he saw his girlfriend’s scared expression, Gray took deep breaths and tried to compose himself. “You know why you cannot leave. It’s not like I don’t want you to, but… If something like that happened again…” His gaze lowered, his nails digging deeper into the palms of his hands, his teeth biting his tongue, suppresing a sob.

He still remembered seeing an injured Juvia being attacked and knocked unconscious by someone sent to kill him, just like other Devil Slayers and their families. As soon as he encased the masked man in ice, he brought her to the infirmary, where Wendy managed to heal her injuries, as she assured that their child was safe, much to their relief. And that was all that mattered in that moment. After the man got interrogated, Gray could hear that man’s wicked laugh, as he told the Ice Mage that he wasn’t working on his own.

That phrase alone made his blood freeze in his veins, as he replayed the moment his beloved fell to the ground, cuts and bruises glaring on her skin. He couldn’t afford losing another loved one, not now that he was going to have his own family. He promised he would become a man who could protect Juvia, and yet, he had broken the promise he made. Then, it hit him. Those people couldn’t harm her, if Juvia were to stay from that moment on at home, where no one could lay a single finger on her, not with all the protection enchantments around their home. He would keep his oath. He would protect Juvia and their child, no matter what.

Juvia didn’t want to see him like this, so she stood up the couch as fast as she could and embraced the Ice Mage who washed her rain away, as tight as she could, pools of tears forming in her eyes. She was supposed to ease his pain, not be its main cause; and this made her heart ache for him.

“Juvia is sorry. So, so sorry.” Her arms drew him as close to her as they could, while her aquamarine eyes were searching for his midnight ones. “Juvia will never be as stupid as she was that day, I promise.”

“I can’t go through this again. Not again.” his voice cracked, as he leaned into her embrace. The moment he felt her welcoming warmth, he found himself sobbing in her chest once again.

“You won’t. Juvia promises that she – no, we won’t leave you, no matter what.” Juvia murmured as she raised her hands, so she could caress his hair. Her soothing voice and warm touches always made Gray feel safe, loved, home. “Juvia promises you that she and our little one won’t leave you. We’ll always be by your side.”

As he registered her words, Gray’s sobs slowly subsided and quickly wiped the tears he had just shed, as he straightened his back. “Juvia, no matter what happens, I will always be by your side, just like how you’ve always been by mine. And I promise that I will do my best to be the father he or she deserves.” Gray still didn’t know his child’s gender, as he wanted to keep it as a surprise. He decided that if they had a boy, they would name him Storm, and if they had a girl, they would name her Iris. At the end of the day, the only thing he cares about is his baby’s safety; but he would be lying if he didn’t say he wanted a girl.

“You already are, Gray. You love this child already, even if he or she isn’t born yet.” She then took Gray’s hand and placed it once again on her belly, as their child moved again. “And it looks the little one agrees. Now please, go get some sleep. You just came from a job and you need all the rest you need. Soon, you’ll look for those moments,” she giggled.

Gray couldn’t help but chuckle. This woman… “Okay. Wake me up when dinner is ready.” he waved Juvia’s way, as he headed towards their bedroom, not hearing the Water Mage’s next words.

“Your daddy already loves you so much, and so does momma, Storm.”

BONUS – April 13th

The moment Gray held his son for the first time, he remembered the words Ur once told him about her daughter; how her tears wouldn’t stop and how she truly felt alive the day Ultear was born. At that time, he didn’t understand those words, but now he did. He felt tears making their way on his cheeks and a brand-new feeling: love for his newborn. As tears hit the little boy’s face, he started to whimper, and looked his way with his big midnight eyes. While holding the young Storm in his arms for the unkempt time, the Ice Mage made himself another oath. “Storm, I will do my best to keep you away from darkness. And if you ever encounter it, I’ll seal it away for you.”

“Juvia still cannot believe he is here!” she whispered, her eyes gleaming and full of love for the new life that stood between her and Gray in their bed. She then placed her hand on Storm’s tiny chest, feeling it rise and fall with every breath he took.

“Yeah… Me neither.” he admitted, as he failed to keep his eyes from his cobalt-haired son, his right hand underneath his raven locks. “Thank you, Juvia.”

“What are you thanking Juvia for, Gray?” she asked, her gaze away from her son and fixed on her boyfriend.

“For everything.” The Ice Mage smiled her way, cupping her cheek with his other hand.

“No; thank you, Gray. For giving Juvia the best life she could have.” She smiled back, leaning into Gray’s touch. Their waiting for a storm was finally over, and they couldn’t be happier, as their son brought the sunshine into their lives after that fateful day.

Theon Greyjoy

How I feel about this character: I LOVE HIM!!! MY RESILIENT TRASH SQUID PRINCE!!!

In a less histrionic note, it’s amazing how well-written he is. It’s my dream to one day write something so beautiful and well-crafter as Theon’s whole arc.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Robb most of all, but also Kyra and Patrek Mallister to a lesser degree. Even so, I feel like Robb was the love of his life and even if he has a romantic endgame in Jeyne P., it’s going to be a Loras situation all over again.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Jeyne P., because no one else can understand them like they do given their shared trauma, but also Wex and Asha. And Dagmer!

My unpopular opinion about this character: He’s never ever done anything wrong ever in his life Everyone who dislikes him is wrong Seriously, he’s competent. People love to ignore that because he’s such a mess, but it’s worth noticing that we’re inside his head and privy to all his thoughts and feelings. He doesn’t come across nearly as insecure and headless to other people as he actually is, or he wouldn’t be able to control his men in Winterfell or during the raids, or to take control of Moat Cailin later.

Also, while it’s true he picked all the worst choices, he had no good options.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: He has to survive. I speak this into existence! I love him too much for him to die, and I’m sick of the redemption equals death trope. He better survive and become an explorer.

Elia Martell

How I feel about this character: Deserved so much better in all fronts :(

All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one, really. Her husband fucked her over, and so did the other characters I’ve seen being shipped with her (Lyanna and Arthur Dayne), plus I don’t know her enough to be invested. Maybe that suitor Oberyn says she was interested in? The one who farted.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Oberyn and Doran! They love her so much! I like to think she’d get along very well with Ellaria too.

My unpopular opinion about this character: That I’m not nearly as invested in her as most of fandom? Or maybe that I think that before the Queen of Love and Beauty fiasco, she loved Rhaegar, possibly even after still. He’s handsome, courteous, sensitive, a prince who will make her queen in time. What is there not to love? I think she was completely blindsided by the Lyanna thing, both at the tournement and when Rhaegar disappeared with her.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That she had taken Rhaenys to visit her uncles in Dorne right after that tournement and stayed there while the whole thing developed in the capital

Asha Greyjoy

How I feel about this character: I LOVE HER!!! If she’s not queen by the end I’m suing.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Qarl! Alysane! Tris when he learns to shut up about the pimples.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Her uncle Rodrik and Theon! For all that she’s friendly, I think Asha is pretty reserved and hard to know.

My unpopular opinion about this character: That whole part when she pretends to be Esgred is cringe-worth. I know people find it funny, but as an older sister to a loving shy dumbass, I die from second-hand embarassement for her more than for Theon. She manages to come across as worse than Theon, and that’s saying something! It’s just not okay to grope your brother, Asha! And still, that scene says a lot about Asha’s own insecurities and the person she has to be to keep her place and freedom... and yet, I find it difficult to say her actions were justified.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I feel pretty confident she’s going to live, so I want her to become queen and start some deep economical and cultural reforms with the surviving ironborn.

Ashara Dayne

How I feel about this character: Indifferent. Even more so than with Lyanna and Elia, I don’t feel like I know her at all. We know she was very pretty, that she used to laugh and that she met a tragic end, but that’s pretty much it.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one, especially not Barristan.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Again, no one. I know people seem to think of her and Elia as friends, and w know she was at the tournement, but again, not much to go by.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Don’t know how unpopular this is, but she definitely had sex with Brandon that time, not Ned.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I don’t know, I think it’s very unlikely, but it would be fun if she turned out to be secretly alive after all for some perspective on the past generation and the events pre-rebellion, but I don’t want her to be Lemore nor Howland’s wife.

Arianne Martell

How I feel about this character: She’s okay, her chapters are entertaining, but not favorite material

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Arys and Daemon

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Her friends Drey, Garin and Sylva

My unpopular opinion about this character: This is way more on GRRM than on her, but it’s plain umconfortable how she had a crush on and very sexual thoughts about Oberyn at such a young age.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That she could actually meet Quentyn and see that he was never a threat to her :(

Oberyn Martell

How I feel about this character: I like him, but I like Doran better. He could have done a better job raising his daughters.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Ellaria! They were very in love and committed, and I feel like she brought out the best in him.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Doran and Elia

My unpopular opinion about this character: He’s not as hot-headed as his reputation leads us to believe. He’s in complete control in KL until the end, it was pretty much bad luck that got him killed. Which makes me believe that all the other things that he did to earn his bad rep were done with open eyes.

He’s also not as awesome a father as fandom seems to believe. Maybe he got better with the younger ones, but I don’t really like the Sand Snakes and I think the way they are willing to walk all over Doran and talk badly about Ellaria reflects badly on him. And what we do know about his parenting style (taking Obara from her mother the way he did, saying they’ll need to kill any abusive husbands they get because he won’t help) makes Doran look like father of the year.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That he got justice for Elia and her children, that he took Tyrion to Dorne and they became friends.

Doran Martel

How I feel about this character: I like him and I think he’s smart. His plans could do with a bit of feedback, but he’s not dumb.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one, really. I feel like he’s still hung up on his wife.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Oberyn, Elia, Aero

My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t think he’s overcautious or too slow, I think he has internalized that his first duty is to Dorne so he can’t go starting wars willy-nilly. If he could, he’d rain as much revenge on Elia’s murderers as Oberyn

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That he had shut the Sand Snakes down harder when they called him a coward.

Brienne of Tarth

How I feel about this character: MY DAUGHTER! SHE’S SO SWEET!

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Jaime, maybe Hyle if he repents and gets his act together

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Pod, Catelyn, her dad

My unpopular opinion about this character: She would probably be happy being a regular lady if things went that route for her, especially because as the heir to Tarth, she’d be the one rulling her land and having a consort, not the other way around... I also think she would be good at it and be respected. Yes, I think people did ridicule and bully and disrespect her, but the fact that her septa, who was her main caregiver, was in on it, might have warped her perception of how others saw her. The bet too. Her master of arms, for example, respected and liked her, Cat too, so Brienne can and does inspire loyalty.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I don’t think she’ll find Sansa, but I wish she would find at least Arya and get part of her oath to Cat done.

Jaime Lannister

How I feel about this character: I enjoy his povs a lot, he’s very funny, but he’s not one of my favorites

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Brienne

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Tyrion, his squires, that guy who has stopped shaving

My unpopular opinion about this character: I feel like, even if he had confesssed the reason why he killed Aerys, people would still judge him as a Kingslayer anyway. I don’t think it’s reprehensible that he kept quiet in the circumstances. Maybe it was irresponsible to just let the wildfire lying around, but he had no way to know it was dangerous.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I want him to be the one to kill Cersei, but I want it to be because she’s becoming Aerys 2.0, not because he’s jealous.

Tyrion Lannister

How I feel about this character: I love him a lot! He’s sadly relatable, though I’m definitely not that smart. The way he won’t let people forget he’s there, that he’s smart and capable and that he won’t accept them walking all over him is the best.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Dany! I think it’s a given that he’ll fall for her. I also think it’s a given that she’ll fall for Jon, but I’d like her to at least have some feelings for him as well, to be divided, etc. Though if it comes to that, I’d rather she ended with Tyrion.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Jon, Bronn, Pod. I like to think the mountain clans think fondly of him as well.

My unpopular opinion about this character: He never really loved Shae. I don’t know how unpopular this is, but he didn’t love her and he was wrong to kill her even with the public humiliation and everything, and I think he’s aware of these facts. Not to say the sense of betrayal wasn’t real.

Also, he was 100% in the right when killing Tywin. It’s sad only because it sends Tyrion to such dark places, but really, a public service.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Third head of the dragon, baby!

Genna Lannister

How I feel about this character: She annoys me!

All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one. I wish she felt happier with her husband, but shipping is too strong a word.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Joanna Lannister. She very much doesn’t strike me as someone who has close friends.

My unpopular opinion about this character: She’s not a cool aunt or a loving aunt or whatever. Her talk with Jaime in his pov doesn’t strike me as them having a close relationship, and she’s basically a non-entity in Tyrion’s and Cersei’s thoughts from what I remember. For all that she criticizes Tywin, she seems to be a lot like him imho.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Well, if she’s not in the Red Wedding Redux (if that happens), she’s got to be aound it. It would be interesting to see her reaction to it.

Scorpio Milo

How I feel about this character: He’s alright. Bit of an asshole, which I like

All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one. People seem to ship him with Aioria and Camus in particular, I’m okay with that.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: The other gold saints

My unpopular opinion about this character: His signature attack is cool in theory and lame in practice.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That he got more character development. He gets little even for a minor character.

Aquarius Camus

How I feel about this character: He’s okay. I’m not very invested

All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one. He seems to get paired up a lot with Milo, I guess that’s fine.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Hyoga, the other gold saints.

My unpopular opinion about this character: By adding the Crystal Saint, the anime turns a touching moment into something hilarious when Hyoga and him fight and trace back their saint genealogy

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That he hadn’t frozen Hyoga. What the fuck did that even accomplish???

Andromeda Shun

How I feel about this character: I LOVE HIM! He was the first character that made me stop and think a little deeper about morals.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Hyoga in the anime, June in the manga

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Seiya, Ikki, his master

My unpopular opinion about this character: He’s the more mature of the bronze saints, not only because he’s quiter and calmer, but because he’s the only one to think things through. He’s the only one who reflects about their situation in a conscious way. And he’s smart.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish he had actually died in his Hades arc. I think it would make for a better story

Virgo Shaka

How I feel about this character: I like him a lot, his Hades arc helped a lot with that

All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one... I’d read whatever back when I was more into Saint Seiya, but I have no particular preferences

My non-romantic OTP for this character: The other gold saints, especially Aioria. They’ve come a long way and it was really sad how angry Aioria got about his death.

My unpopular opinion about this character: He’s way more of an asshole than people give him credit for.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish he had lived, but again, they had to die, such is the nature of shonen manga XD

Sailor Pluto

How I feel about this character: I don’t know, she’s not as interesting as the outer senshi, but she’s alright

All the people I ship romantically with this character: No one

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Haruka and Michiru

My unpopular opinion about this character: None, really. I don’t have a lot of opinions on her.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I’m more than okay with the end of Sailor Moon, including hers

Sailor Jupiter

How I feel about this character: I did not appreciate her enough the first time I read this manga, but she is awesome

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Ami, just a little bit

My non-romantic OTP for this character: All the other senshi

My unpopular opinion about this character: Much of the sense of her being an outsider gets lost in translation, which is a pity since it’s such an integral part of her character.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I’m pretty happy with how things turned out for her :)

Sailor Venus

How I feel about this character: I had such a crush on her growing up XD

All the people I ship romantically with this character: I don’t actively ship it, but I think her and Mars are cute together

My non-romantic OTP for this character: All the other senshi, Artemis

My unpopular opinion about this character: The anime made her more immature than she was originally, but that doesn’t mean she was super adult in the original either. She had a lot on her plate so she stepped up. Her growth was more subtle than for her anime counterpart, but it was there

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I’m pretty satisfied with the way the story ends, everyone including Venus alive and happy. Western authors, learn something from this!

You've said that female characters mostly reduced to the love interests, or that all they're thinking are their bf or love interests. But imo, this case access to the male characters as well. Percy doesn't think about Grover for example, I've always expected it to be there in his mind because of he's his bff. Instead, Grover just is... not that much of important anymore I guess? He doesn't think or concern that much about the demigods in CHB, whether they're okay or not. 1/9

They meet with the f-ing Hercules and Percy never once gets upset or brings the Zoe’s name in the ship. Instead, we see Percy’s making the dam joke in the MoA and saying it’s an inside joke. Which shows that Zoe is still in his mind. But dude, RR, please. If you’re gonna make Percy to come across with Hercules, and never once make him salty or angry with trying to acting on it while the other characters in the ship saying ‘’Percy dont1!!’ Then I’m sorry but what’s the meaning of those cases? 2/9

7 team dynamic and friendship are basically dead. Riordan puts 7 supposedly all different characters in a ship and all dynamic that exists is mostly the love triangles. I don’t know if you talked about this issue but I’d like to see you point on this. Bc it was an important part in the series and Rick’s not playing with the potential actually is disappointing. He just mostly focuses on fricking romance instead and it’s annoying. 3/9

Similar cases also existed in first series too. For example worst offender was whole Calypso case. I first thought that it wasn’t Percy’s fault that Gods didn’t keep their promises. But it was actually his fault, and also Annabeth and the others were at fault as well because of they legit thought Gods would keep their promises. I mean, dude. They even broke their biggest oaths and you all know it, and now you tell me that you never once checked out the gods’s jobs? 4/9

In order to see if they kept their promises or not? Honestly it’s so… dumb? There must be a character development on this, basing on this situation, it does suck too. Percy should’ve learned that gods don’t keep their promises. And he should’ve checked it out himself after the war ends. Let’s say Percy was dumb, but Annabeth? She is a child of the Athena, who supposedly is smart, but never comes up with the idea of checking things out instead of just trusting gods to do their jobs. 5/9

Or any other character, no one points the issue out. I’m not sure if this case was intentional or not, or RR himself just forgot about this but man, it comes across as such a bad writing. Also another biggest offender was May goddamn Castellan. So RR, you’re saying to me that no one, no Percy, Annabeth, Thalia, didn’t go to her house in order to see if she’s okay or not after war and events?In order to help her case, even if she’s still crazy or is cured? Or, was underw-kiss more important? 6/9

After learning about her case, none of them didn’t ever wonder? What the actuality? Bob is another big offender. Not because of Percy left him; he didn’t. Bc you see, Bob was never his friends unlike Calypso. He was just a Titan, there was no actual friendship or anything. And it’s kinda dumb that Rick tries to portray Percy as a terrible friend in this case rather than pointing out other issues in his writing. 7/9

But then in the Tartarus, they built a relationship, this time it’s actual. But when they go to the Doors, Percy never once actually try to save Bob or Damasen and it’s just…. I’d expected Percy to pull a thing in the end and sending them to the doors with risking his own life bc it’s Percy’s supposed characteristic element; he would do anything for his friends. But it just… doesn’t exist? Why it was never a big characteristic issue right there when you had to chance to write it? 8/9

Also, at the end of the boO, Percy just generally is okay with sending his friends to fight with Gaia. They have a talk with Frank 1 minute, and after that, it’s all okay. No big issue. I guess it was so much challenging to pull that, RR. I believe that there are so much other problematic events but those came to mind at this time. Sorry if this was so much long and salty rant. *looks at the rant and cries in salt* 9/9

But yeah no, the boys are just as bad as the girls, that was never up for discussion. The question was just very explicitely about female characters, so I’m definitely not gonna drag guys into that. *chuckles*

Everything in Heroes of Olympus is about the romance. I mean seriously absolutely everything because even the villains shipped it - Gaia wanting specifically the blood of Annabeth and Percy because they totally are her OTP, Arachne having a tapestry of the underwater kiss how the ever-loving did she even know that happened how is that not the creepiest, most inappropriate and weird thing to happen in that entire gods damned series. They shoulda named that ship Ark II not Argo II, because it’s all about pairing up. It’s just that, in that ask, we were specifically talking about the bad writing of the female characters! ;)

Honestly. The Grover thing. I think that’s more on Riordan not thinking about Grover than on Percy. Like. I feel as though Riordan temporarily forgot Grover exists because he was so busy shipping. Because Coach Hedge should not have been on that ship. The satyr to go with them should have been Grover. Grover and Percy should have gotten a proper reunion. Instead, one throw-away dream-spy sequence where we got to see him and Rachel. So cheap.

The lack of friendship dynamics was most disappointing, yeah. Everything was about love. Even the one damn quest where all the girls could have bonded - lol nope it’s not a quest it’s actually a tea party with Aphrodite to talk about your love life!!! Because girls!!! Doing girl stuff!!! Seriously, old straight man writing teenage girls? Cringe.

Okay no I find it really asking too much that Percy shoulda pushed the gods about Calypso. Bear in mind the time. The war ended on August 18th. Percy gets abducted on December 15th. That’s four months. Four months of PTSD, of rebuilding the camp, of having a lot of other shit on his mind. If like… an actual big amount of time had passed and Percy had never checked? Okay. Yeah. That’s on him. But within four months? And… it’s not just Percy who had a lot of shit on his mind, let’s be honest, so did the gods. Tartarus was broken into, Olympus was demolished, very shortly thereafter they started having that identity crisis and souls started escaping from Hades. Four months pass in no time at all, especially when you do have a lot on your to-do list.

Same goes for May. Seriously. It’s only been a total of four months. I… genuinely would not have half a mind to care about a total stranger like May Castellan in the middle of my whole entire world kinda coming apart in a war and me having to deal with my own personal aftermath of that?? I mean, those are literal children who just saw their friends and family murdered in a war and who fought in that war themselves. I really, really do think that they had enough on their mind without caring to check in and see if this total stranger had been taken care of… And Percy, Thalia and Annabeth, were like the only ones with any kind of investment or even knowledge there, I mean it’s not like May was public knowledge and everybody cared. And who knows, maybe Thalia did go there off screen, check on her with the Hunt.

I’m generally not okay with Riordan’s attempt at portraying Percy as a bad friend in HoO. It’s wildly OoC. He established Percy’s fatal flaw to be that he would let the world burn for his friends, but suddenly he can’t be bothered with said friends? Both, Calypso and Bob, as used by Riordan, then the lack of Grover, the lack of… of any big reunion aside from Annabeth. He took this character that he specifically created as a very loving and devoted friend and suddenly made him not really care and also not really making friends. Yeah, Frank and Hazel. But… Percy Jackson? The Percy Jackson from the first series? He’d have been friends with everyone on the ship in five hours flat.

I STILL DON’T GET THE BOB AND DAMASEN PART. FUCK YEAH. Seriously, it’s been years and this still bugs me. That Percy and Annabeth were just like “Well. The doors closed. They dead now. Such a shame”. What the actual fuck was that. Try to save them! You could have still saved them!!! That was, too, so very OoC. Like Percy Jackson would just turn his back and let two of his comrades die.
