#otp: by the end of this century

If I had a nickel for every OTP I have about two childhood best friends who fell in love with each other in their teens without ever telling the other,

but were separated because of their century’s heaviest war,

just for one of them to end up mutilated and lost

while the other found themselves fighting for someone who was actually just exploiting them

and who they had to betray in order to set their lover free,

while proving to the audience their love through a sort of wedding vow that the fandom unanimously recognizes as an iconic line,

then proceeding to be reunited some time later

just for the writers to break them up at the end,

while still exploiting the love between them either for drama or to enhance other storylines,

leaving the fandom to wonder if the hints dropped in time were just random or actual confirmation of their love/happy ending,

I’d have two nickels.

Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice right?

Baelfire was an incredible character, with compelling motives and great potential, but his character was doomed the moment they revealed he was Henry's father, not only because they'd already painted Henry's dad in such a negative light, but also because this pitted him directly against Killian Jones, whom the writers claimed to have wanted to end up with Emma "since the beginning."

This is nothing against Killian; Killian Jones is my favorite character, Captain Swan is my OTP, and I'm certainly not bothered in the slightest that Emma ended up with Killian.

However, I was also such a huge fan of Baelfire for the first season or two. He was an artist, he never gave up, he made lots of pasta, he was clever and resourceful, and he always saw the good in people. I would've loved to see him grow and develop as a character.

He always wanted a family, but he kept losing them. His mom left. His dad let him go. He sacrificed himself for the Darlings. He left Killian's crew. He didn't even become one of the lost boys- he spent centuries without hope of a family and never got one.

He also always wanted to be a hero, but he lost all chance of that when they made him Henry's father and set him up to fail.

It's hard to put it all into proper words- I'm not a huge fan of Neal Cassidy, but man, did I love Baelfire.

I'm genuinely curious on why most of the fandom ship Desmond with his ancestors even though they're related

I wouldn't say it's most of the fandom but it's certainly some of the more popular ships in AC fandom, sure.

I can't speak for everyone who enjoys these ships so I'll give a brief explanation to why I ship Desmond with his ancestors which might not be as deep as some might expect.

I don't really know why, I just do. Whenever I'm in a fandom, I tend to focus on two specific characters. One character will get all the love and another would be their main pairing (OTP). In AC's case, that's Desmond and Altaïr. From there, many of my ideas and what I want to write would focus on them most of the time.

I do think one of the reasons why it's quite popular is because we want Desmond to have a happy ending and we're also attached to specific characters and so we focus on ideas or thoughts of how those characters would be happy with Desmond or help Desmond be happy. And many of us are attached to Desmond's ancestors.

As for the whole 'but they're related' part, I'm sure others have varied reasons like "that's what makes it hot" or "they're centuries apart though" to name a few. I personally don't really care that they're related since it's fiction and I believe that fiction should be able to go beyond what counts as morally acceptable by society. Fiction is a boundless sea of 'what ifs' and I personally believe that people should be allowed to go fishing for what they want to catch in this fictional sea.

long post that is meant to make you like francesca even more

guys, i'm all for revisiting classics and reinterpreting them in a way one feels meaningful for their context, but it is much more fun if you know what you're building on.

so.

storytime (with some really brutal simplifications): early xiv century, dante lives and writes his works. a few years later (but there's some overlap) petrarch writes a collection which is quite the opposite of what dante had done: a really really limited number of ideas, topoi, even vocabulary recombined in all possible ways and brought to a stylistic perfection that dante had not completely acquired - which is normal when you're writing a 100k poem in which you're using all possible language and imagery, from the highest to the filthiest.

for around 4 centuries, almost everyone forgets about dante (and writes clones of petrarch's works - "copying" was not considered bad at the time, quite the opposite). then romanticism comes and people decide writing about farting demons (i'm not making this up) is actually cool and imagination >>> perfect technique.

i'd say that, in this respect, two centuries have gone by but that's still where we're at.

but both us and romantics don't think of life, values, religion the way a man of the middle age used to. so, we're all really hyped about not just farting demons, but also non-farting demons, proud men of state who still care more about the ideas they had in life than the hell they're in, tragedies, hatreds, and, yes, lovers brought to hell by their love. (did i mention we all like hell best? that definitely wasn't the author's intent. but well he's dead).

we can't say if dante himself saw some beauty in all of this, but it is sure that his moral judgement was firm against it. not in a cool priest-from-fleabag way. in a serious way. (a really important thing about studying the past is that you have to understand that in some ways people have stayed the same, and in others they have changed a lot).

he was sincerely against the sin francesca committed cheating on her husband (with her brother-in-law!) and francesca was sincerely regretting it. that's something that would be inconceivable to any modern writer. in dante's hell there are some sinners who don't regret their sins, but they're usually the worst of the worst.

also: before writing the divine comedy, dante wrote a lot of love poems. he and his friends were starting off with some tropes which mostly came from provence, in france. poems from provence usually stated that love had to be adulterous, or it wasn't real (which made sense in a moment in which marriages in upper classes were mostly arranged, if not forced), and it was conceived as complete devotion of the man towards the woman. what you can see reading dante's works in order is that he started off with those tropes, but then found them incompatible with cristianity, and shifted towards a form of completely spiritual, selfless love. the figurative devotion became quite literal; calling the loved one "an angel" was not exactly a metaphor anymore, etc.

he distanced himself completely to all of french love poetry. what was the utmost example of that? the most famous adulterous couple of the time? the otp? yeah, sir lancelot and guinevere.

and what couple were paolo and francesca reading about when they gave up and had their first kiss? exactly.

so, what dante is saying with the episode of paolo and francesca, is something along: you have no idea how close i came to ending up like the two of them. i'm so glad i found the right way in time, and at the same time i completely understand what they've been through. i'm glad that it wasn't me, i despise what they did, but i empathize with it.

so. about hozier.

one of the most amazing things for me about the song francesca is that it's (consciously?) none of that. bc all of that is extremely fascinating (at least to me) but it would be inconceivable today. who would really despise a woman who was forced to marry someone she didn't now just bc she cheated on him, and to despise her to the point of seriously thinking she really deserves to be tortured forever.

the point of hozier's song is the opposite: i'm not regretting any of this. (if we're imagining his hell to be metaphoric, i'd say it's the guilt, the mess made maybe). i would take no chance on salvation, and would do that again.

and isn't that the most romantic (as in "well-suited in the current of xix century romanticism") thing you can summon?

5. "Lies came between them": what are your thoughts on the relationship between Fingon and Maedhros during the fraught period of the Unrest of the Noldor?

I have a few different versions of this! Here's one:

As their fathers increasingly grow apart, Maedhros is generally the one who is more willing to doubt his father. He will never directly go against him, but he will sometimes (in private) voice thoughts along the lines of "dad takes things a little too far" or "I think x is kinda overblown" or w/e. Meanwhile, Fingon is the one who will absolutely stand by Fingolfin no matter what. After all, Fingolfin is the reasonable one, isn't he? He didn't threaten his brother with a sword. He's not endlessly whisking his sons away for stupid arrogant reasons. He's well-spoken and cool-headed and he's a great dad and shut up Maedhros Fingon will not hear a single word against him.

Anyways, one day Maedhros comes to Fingon all exasperated like, "Can you believe it, my father asked me to tell me your comings and goings? I delayed him for now and I'll just tell him the bare minimum but I cannot believe he'd asked me to spy" and Fingon is like "? Well, annoying that he's doing this, but I don't see the big deal. I tell my father everything he asks me about you, it's just what you do" and Maedhros does not talk to him for a year.

(And when he does, pre-EoN, it's very icy).

12: How did the relationship end? Were they together until Fingon’s death, or did they break up before that?

IMO they were back together until Fingon's death! United front at the Union of Maedhros, fucking on the Map table, talking about their cute little plans once they win the war, etc etc. 13: Did they ever get back together after re-embodiment? If so, how did it happen?

Well, if you assume Maedhros gets reembodied... yes, because it's more fun and they're my OTP, haha.

Anyways, I think Maedhros is sort of a recluse post-reembodiment. Very much keeping to himself. Not convinced on the whole living thing. Having issues with himself and also everyone around him.

Fingon has been prepared to dramatically reject him (due to all the, you know, crimes) when he shows up at his doorstep, but... he just keeps not showing up at his doorstep. Which hurts -- they'd been together for centuries, and now Maedhros won't even give him the chance to throw a glass of wine in his face and tell him it was all for nothing. Did he not matter?

Anyways, Fingon starts doing things specifically to get Maedhros' attention (does he know that about himself? IDK. Not always.). These things include garishly competing in jousting tournaments, drunkenly serenading Valinor with Their Song, sucking Ingwion's dick in the public baths so everyone talks about it the next morning, etc etc. All of these things convince Maedhros that Fingon wants absolutely nothing to do with him, so he avoids Fingon harder.

Eventually circumstances force them together, romcom style, and naturally they hook up. And keep hooking up from there. Fingon dares you to say something about it.

(Sobbing regretful confessions of guilt come much later, and they get back together for real, but it takes them some time to get there).

OF COURSE. How could I do one for Jon and not for Elias? How I feel about this character: Sooo... @irrationalsense introduced me to TMA back in 2016, and from the start I said, "I hope Elias isn't evil, it's obvious that he's the only likely candidate." So I wasn't happy over how things unfolded--then we got to know Elias. And he stopped being this flat Sus Inept Middle-Manager character and demonstrated what a wonderfully manipulative, hilarious, sensible bastard he was. But I still didn't love him, not until years later when I started writing him. And now not only do I love this bastard, more than once I went to @irrationalsense and said, "Vibe check this, he's convinced me that what he's doing is only logical choice and I don't know how to feel about that." I still don't know how to feel about that. I will always be Team Jon (and Team Jon only consists of Jon, to be clear) but I'm not so sure Elias isn't also Team Jon. So. Matched set of monstrous human and human monster. All the people I ship romantically with this character: Jon. I don't see him as being inclined to exert energy/time with other people unless it serves a concrete purpose. In my mind, after living for centuries, he's probably lost most of his appetite for sex. My non-romantic OTP for this character: Mordechai? In a frenemies type way. My unpopular opinion about this character: He was right. In the fucked up world that was TMA, where things were FUBAR from the start, millions of years before he was even born, he was right. One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: [sipping the darkest coffee] what are you saying TMA ended at s4 no notes it's fine

I am incredibly amused that the end of s1 of My Dearest caused such an uproar that Nam Goong Min had to speak up and confirm that yes Gil Chae is the FL for s2 and the whole thing is a love story between JH and GC.

Now that I have cooled down from initial shock of end of s1, my thoughts can be summed up as they both need to really grow up and mature before they can have any chance together - him actually more than her (tho her too.)

They are little too much alike - their habit of lashing out as self-protection is not a recipe for long-term bliss. So far they are the epitome can’t live with you can’t live without you.

I mean, he would die for her (and almost did more than once) but that doesn’t mean he’d be an easy everyday person to live with. He has cut off his connection with any sort of proper society/hierarchy so thoroughly (he has no family, no permanent abode, no goal of having official position, no traditional values of obedience to royalty etc), he I think is genuinely incapable of understanding that she cannot do the same - she has family she needs to protect but also she IS enmeshed into societal goals and values.

The thing that he doesn’t get (and I don’t necessarily blame him, he’s a 17th century man not a modern dude) is that she will never be able to be free to the extent he is simply due to her gender. He can pack up his stuff and leave (in fact this is his default to deal with any trauma - to leave) but she cannot not just because this would be abandoning her family or even because she can be raped and murdered so easily but because in a society where women are either wives or whores doing so would make her an outcast to an extent nothing he does could make him.

Minglan is a very different drama but it’s a little like the reason it took Minglan so long to open her heart to Tingye - because the stakes are not the same. If you pick a partner wrongly, all the man is risking is his heart but for her it’s her whole life. GC can break JH’s heart. But JH can cost GC her life. And in her particular situation, her family’s life.

The thing is I don’t hate JH either (I mean if they switched OTPs yes I would but as is) - he’s not an enlightened saint but a traumatized period man. But the thing is the way they both are right now even if they somehow got together, I can’t see it working long term. They need to figure out a ton of stuff out first. And how to tell the whole truth even if it’s ugly or makes them vulnerable or causes problems.

PS I don’t really care if this drama is gonna go adultery route (tho I doubt it will) but man I am not looking to fandom fun that will ensue if it will.

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 53, but full disclosure, I haven't yet moved everything I've written to AO3 yet.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 885,181 (but honestly, OBaaT Georg is an outlier, and maybe shouldn't have been counted...)

3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently? Ever? Currently, it's SuperCat and, more recently, Guiding Light/Otalia. Stupid unfinished WIP that has haunted me for 15 years...

4. What are your top five fics by kudos? These are all SuperCat, btw. One Bridge at a Time, At the Pleasure of the Hotel de la Paix, Uncharted (part 11), At Sea, and (the shocker) Steel Blue.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes, as many as I can. I've been known to respond to some years after they were written. Comments are the lifeblood of my writing. One comment at the right time can inspire so much. Sometimes, even the completion of a lingering unfinished story...

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Easily, my tears ricochet (Mirandy). My wife (Lisof9) and I took a vow decades ago (pre-dating, even) that we would always write happy, hopeful endings where the couple is together.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Everything else? See above. That doesn't mean there isn't angst. My wife taught me everything I know about chasing characters up burning trees and then lobbing grenades and feral raccoons at them. She also taught me about cliffhangers.

8. Do you get hate on fic? Once. A long time ago on an ER fic, of all things. I didn't write a word for two years after that.

9. Do you write smut? Yes. I'm kinda known for that. It is sometimes even requested, meaning the prompt is given to me because it requires smut.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Hmm... Not really? Let me explain. One of my SuperCat stories mentions Emily Carlton from The Devil Wears Prada, and one of my Guiding Light stories has a brief cameo from a character on Saving Grace. The only true crossover I've ever written was wacky. It was Star Trek: Voyager and CSI: Miami. Decide for yourself: Wackiness. It's short.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not sure I understand the question. You mean plagiarized.? There was a rash of that happening in the early 2000s, I think, but my readers always let me know.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I'm not sure. Probably.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Oh, absolutely! My wife should be considered my co-writer in everything because I have been known to pick her brain when I'm stuck. I've also co-written in the Guiding Light/Otalia fandom and in the L&O: SVU Casey/Olivia fandom.

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship? Oh, lord love a duck. SuperCat is certainly my once-and-future obsession. I've been writing them for over seven years at this point and, at last count, have 10 WIPs in the works for them.

My OTP Prime, though, is B'Elanna/Seven from Star Trek: Voyager because that's how I met my wife.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t? Hide Beside Me (Guiding Light/Otalia) has haunted me for 15 years, but remember when I said comments were the lifeblood of writing? Someone commented on it last week which revived my interest in finishing the story. I have a draft for chapter 32 in my WIPs folder right now because of that. I hope I finally get to check that one off my to-do list.

16. What are your writing strengths? Research, capturing character personalities, dialogue, and romance.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Fight scenes and the fact that I'm so slow as a writer.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Actually, I have a plan to write an Astrid/Raphaelle story in French when I feel I'm up to snuff in French again. I can't wait. I love that ship.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Ever? Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Buck/Wilma, on my handwriting practice pad from school. I was 10. Published in a 'zine? A Star Trek: The Next Generation Worf/Deanna story. Published online? Xena, Warrior Princess.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Currently, there are two:

Queen of Hearts, (ST:Voy, B/7), because it was a love letter to the woman who is now my amazing wife.

One Bridge at a Time, (Supergirl, SuperCat). I'm proudest of this one because it took me seven years to write, came in at 310+k words, and I finished it. I never gave up on it. It was always in my mind. And now I'm working on a sequel to it. :)

I love them your honor. Doesn't even have to be romantic, I just want to see them being obsessed about each other. I'm also a pretty big obianidala fan, hence why I added her too. (I'm a multishipper really. I have my otp but there's a lot of ships that I enjoy)

1. Obi-Wan Kenobi/Anakin Skywalker(/Padmé Amidala) (Star Wars)

When I first watched star wars (not that long ago, I only watched it because I wanted to see the sequels in theater lmao) I wasn't a big fan of the prequels so I mostly ignored them, but then a couple years ago I randomly rewatched them in the middle of the night and suddenly I was obsessed. I'm not even sure how I ended up on AO3 (did I go look for obikin? Did I stumble on it? Idk) but eventually I started reading Pining in Preschool, then realised that @palfriendpatine66 was on tumblr, I started interacting with more people around here, and now I'm (slowly) writing fics, and I'm having the time of my life here, so thanks Pal!

I don't think any if my past fandom brainrots reached my current level so I'm pretty sure I'm here for the long haul (at least it's not stopping anytime soon).

It's not super obvious here but I'm actually a huge Marvel fan (well, the MCU, I've never read a comic), and especially Captain America. Stucky is just, 🤌 so tasty (a lot of similarities with obikin actually imo). I'd like to talk to whoever thought "I'm with you 'til the end of the line" was a straight sentence to repeatedly say to your bro throughout an entire century though. Like?? I'm all for relationships that defy the boundaries of platonic and romantic, but still, that's kinda gay.

2. Steve Rogers/James "Bucky" Barnes(/Peggy Carter) (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

The first MCU movie I saw was actually captain america 2 (and not the first one lol) in theater, and I was instantly hooked, though since Endgame I've been less into it, since my fav is gone (and I have to agree with tumblr on that one: they're making too many movies and shows, I can't keep up 😩)

(And I'm still super salty about what they did to steve in canon, they should have killed him off instead of whatever the fuck that was, honestly)

I also added Peggy because she's great, and polyamory is so much better than love triangles or shipping wars. (I'm not polyamorous but I believe in their beliefs. I think it's because of the aromanticism)

Same as with obikin (and stucky too tbh) I don't really care how they love each other, I just care that they do. They're the most important person to each other, be it romantic, platonic, familial, idc.

3. John Watson/Sherlock Holmes (mostly BBC Sherlock, but from the RDJ movies and the books too)

I've obsessed over (non-existent) clues during the last season, and deluded myself into thinking they'd become canon, alas, it didn't happen.

I've translated a couple of fics in french for that ship, but I've never written for it (I thought about it tho), and I've read a lot. That's the fandom where I've read some of the best queerplatonic fics, and that's my favorite interpretation of the ship, especially sherlock being some flavor of aroace.

4. Aziraphale/Crowley (Good Omens)

I love them as a queerplatonic relationship, and I genuinely think that's what they are in canon, the haters can suck it, that's not queerbaiting even if they dont become a canon couple.

5. Elizabeth Bennet/Mr Darcy (Pride and Prejudice)

Not quite the same vibe as the others, but I've read sooo many fics and books (straight up published fics lol), I've watched a bunch of different adaptations (even the one with zombies)... The worst part is that I think I've only read the og book once, oops.

I actually inherited that fandom from the women in my family lmao. My mom, sister and sister-in-law are all obsessed with it, so I read it to see what all the fuss was about and, yeah, I get it.

And that's it! There are other fandoms I'm into, and other ships in those fandoms, but that's pretty much it (the main one that's missing is Dinluke, the others are mostly smaller ones).

I'm not super actively in those fandoms (apart from Star Wars obviously) but i come back to them now and then. Usually I re-watch it then binge-read a bunch of fics (while my main fandom stays in the main spot in my brain) then I let it go again until it comes back (while obikin still stays in the main spot).

Also Harry Potter used to be my main obsession but JKR kinda ruined that for me so I'm not really into it anymore (hence why I didn't list it even though I have written fics for it).

Now we're getting to the meat of it. I expected Yakou to give a counterargument to Vivia, but they seem to be on the same page.

These both feel like things that are going to be important for Yuma to carry with him in the final confrontation with Makoto. Which is why the two baubles were put here.

It's not, and I hate that you think that. This exact mindset, that men only exist for women and nothing else, is a major contributing factor to toxic masculinity.

This conversation must be, like, right before Chapter 5. Yakou's getting ready to carry out Huesca's murder. That's why he's trying to connect with Yuma like this.

Yakou Furiou. I didn't think very highly of him when I met him. But then I got to know him and see new sides to his personality. And through that journey, I was able to learn that I was overestimating him and adjust my opinion even lower.

I don't like Yakou on a personal level. I don't hold his drinking or his grief against him. He's a damaged man who's been through some trauma. But he's also a frequent obstacle who has gross opinions and mostly gets in the way.

Nonetheless, I still stand behind him 100% in the murder of Dr. Huesca. Like I said before, I'm not fond of Yakou the Detective but I adore Yakou the Murderer. That we were all able to pull together and carry off the Crime of the Century to avenge Yakou's wife and assassinate the most well-guarded man in Kanai Ward?

Yeah. I'm proud of that. We did it. Huesca isn't Yakou's victim. He's our victim. We made this happen for Yakou and I have no regrets about it. I'd kill Huesca again if Yuma would let me. Shove him over that railing and let him be a malfunctioning immortal in a pit at the bottom of the secret lab.

Yakou isn't someone I would want to hang out with for an evening. But I'm glad he found his closure, even if this was the only way he could.

BACKSTORY

Ilztaufein was born in Ched Nasad and spent the first half century of his life there before it fell to ruin. There he studied to be a wizard and took to divination magic like a fish to water. It was during his studies that he got a vision of the destruction of Ched Nasad, and so to save his own skin he quietly ran before he could be caught in the crossfire. He spent some time travelling the underdark, changing his name and hiding from settlements for fear of being found out and killed for his cowardice, until he came upon and was recruited into Bregan D'aerthe. Shortly after joining the mercenary group he ventured to the surface for the first time and was absolutely blown away by the different peoples and cultures he found there. He tentatively began to learn about Eilistraee, and though he never became a true devout follower it helped him come to terms with his animosity toward more lolth-leaning drow. He learned more surface languages, started enjoying their food and music, and eventually got himself a more permanent position gathering and trading information to and from the surface. That's when he was captured by the illithid; on the surface, haggling with a food vendor on the side of the road just outside Waterdeep.

At first, the abduction was a horrible inconvenience. He had work to do and no interest in making friends with a bunch of (scary powerful) women, a goody-two-shoes hero and some fop of a surface elf. At least there was the wizard, a kindred spirit who understood the importance of a strong mind and lively debate. And ambition.

Honestly, by any objective standard, this drama is a hot mess. But it's an addictive one and the main reason it works is Lee Jun Ki's performance. That man hard carried this so much, he should have been nicknamed Atlas.

I have to say, perhaps it's because I am older and crankier, but IU's character is driving me INSANE this time around and not in a good way. She's good-hearted but SHE IS SO FUCKING DUMB!!!! She is in 10th century! A very hierarchical place where a dozen people get murdered before breakfast for the slightest sin. And yet she keeps repeatedly crashing royal male baths, physically fighting (!!!) with a royal prince and arguing/demanding stuff with another one. That's not being brave or justice-seeking, that is YOU HAVE THE BRAIN CAPACITY OF A CHAIR!!!! When her cousin mentions that her behavior can bring trouble not just to her, but to the cousin and cousin's husband the prince she is chastened for about two minutes until restarting. If this was in any way reflecting reality, she'd have been murdered before second ep ended. When I compare her to the smart, poised Ruoxi of the original BBJX I want to shake the writer and ask what shrooms they were on and why. (To be fair, she gets better later, somewhat, but she never truly grows a brain, just learns patterns of bevior somewhat.)

Like - this scene is cute and all but in RL man - wtf are you doing woman. He's a royal prince. Nobody likes him, but he could still murder you and only get a "reflect on your actions" as an admonishment.

Or this, where she interrupts his manhunt. And gets taken hostage by a bad guy and is shocked he's all DNGAF kill her, I am here for info.

She objectively knows she's in 10th century but she sure doesn't act like this.
