COMPLETED: Inside

What does this game mean? Oh, it's open for interpretation -- so nothing. It means nothing.

JK, it probably means something.

So, it's a 2D scroller with puzzle elements and minimal combat...maybe none. The whole time I kept thinking,"Abe's Oddysee!" But it's not. I like Abe's Oddysee. That's not a slight, just a point of comparison. There's strong similarities, but one of these I'll be playing as long as my eyes and fingers work and the other... I'm thankful to have played it.

The story is left to interpretation so we'll do some interpreting. It's basically a silent film. Which I respect. In film school I was impressed with the range of emotion and plot that can be protrayed without words. Music helps though. Bringing this to games has been a passion and fascination of mine. But, while there's things happening, Inside doesn't tell a story. It shares some events and say, "figure it out." Which is fine, if intentional. I mean, the lead of Shadow of the Colossus said they wanted their story to be up for interpretation but they also had their own meaning. So I hope Inside's team has its own meaning and not just a collection of disturbing moments.

We play a boy running through the forest. I don't think he's being chased, but once spotted he becomes hunted. He's shot on sight or mamed by dogs. So, these men know this boy or just don't want any boys in the vacinity. 

We move from the woods to a farm. It's hard to say if the farm is in use, but doesn't seem so. Some chicks follow us around...like Mudokons. But you take advantage and shoot them at a hay stack to solve a puzzle. Creative, but unnerving.

Next we move into a city. Almost too quickly. That's when we start seeing drones shuffling to work. Drones being human bodies with no apparent individuality. We then end up at a factory and eventually some high tech facility. At one point Inhave to pretend to be a drone to trick observers. I get the impression that ppl are being enslaved to do menial jobs.

Within the facility I find head apparatuses that allow me to control the drones, using them solve puzzles...like Mudokons. This makes the kid appear like a workong class leader, a freedom fighter. It's not my impression this is the kid's intention, but it juat happens. The drones can lift the boy up or catch him. Feels very revolutionary to me.

I end up in an underwater section. There's a long haired kid that hunts me and tries to drown me. So I have to use a variety of strategies to avoid getting caught...not unlike Abe's Oddysee. It's curious, I start to wonder if this is the intended fate of yhe boy. Not quite. Eventually one of the underwater creatures grabs the boy and drags him under. But instead of dying they bypass a curious object that latches onto the boy and grants him water breathing. The underwater thing leaves us alone now. We're friends now I guess. And fish start follow us like the chicks and drones: more leadership authority.

We're now in a full blown facility. Most ppl here that aren't drones are scientists and workers that ignore us. Though I see a guard with a kid at some point. If he sees me, he captures me. So maybe collecting kids is a thing here. To make water monsters?

Eventually we get to a large vault every scientist wants to see. Inside is a bio mass with arms, legs, and torsos. There are about 4 mine control apparatuses attached...which would seem it's in control. I release it and become absorbed by it. Now I play the biomass trying to escape, cause destruction and murdering a few folks along the way. They try to trap me. I escape, roll down a huge hill and stop at the sea shore. Then the credits roll.

I read that some suspect the biomass is controlling the boy. That makes sense. The boy breaks into a very dangerous facility, not runs from it, and there's no indication of why. As a player, I can only do what the game allows me to do. And I don't need to understand why to do it. It's kinda like mind control. I can only do what the game allows, just like a controller. 

Maybe the biomass just wanted to escape the experiment to die in peace.

I didn't love the game. The platforming is near non-existent. So mostly you're just holding right. It gets boring. The puzzles can be kinds clever, but the shortness of the game means they never become particularly challenging. Yet they still reuse a lot of puzzle ideas. I would have preferred more unique puzzles. 

I appreciate that I'm not a killer in the traditional sense except at the end. And that's more accidental. But the game can be pretty harsh in its violent deaths. It's not very feel good, at all.

Graphically the game pulls off a lot with very little. Lighting and allows them to hide most of the environment in darkness but they have clever use of silhouettes to imply a large, interesting world. The forest is most interesting. Once you get into the factors it's just one large room after another. The animation looka good too, so that helps.

Ultimately, I'm not blown away. While the silent film take is well done, choosing to go for a interpretive story means they don't have to work hard to tell a story. Just show some weird stuff and call it a day. I'm sure they did more than that, but I don't see a reason to replay the game... there's nothing new to learn. Compared to Abe's Oddysee from nearly 30 years ago: a side scrolling action adventure where the player relies more on avoidance. There's a story of escaping a facility and working with NPCs to solve puzzles. And the there's just enough dialogue to give it a good, clear narrative. 

Maybe they didn't want to do dialog (saves money), look at any number of Pixar shorts and you'll see multitude of ways to tell a specific story without dialog. And those are very emotional positive stories. That's important. In my dark teenage years I wanted my stories to be dark and painful. I felt surrounded by positivity and I wanted it ruined (kind of like when Tyler Durden is beating up the blonde guy in Fight Club--he wanted to destroy something beautiful), it's not healthy. I think I grew up in an environment where people didn't want to talk about real problems. (I grew up going to church.) Films like Fight Club and games like Grand Theft Auto forced the audience to face the ugliness of the world, but...in a sense...was just as shallow. In screenwriting they always talk about upping the drama, and the easiest way to do that is to pull out a gun or have a character punch another. But as we see in shows like Better Call Saul, some of your most powerful dramatic moments don't have to be life and death.

I'm getting off topic, point is I think creating a dark world with scary violent things is like pulling a gun--it's easy, cheap scares. Adding meaning and growth, adopting a point of view--that's hard and risky. Inside, in my mind, doesn't take a stand. It does some weird, creepy shit, and leaves it up it all up to you to figure out. I think that works for something like a piece of music, or even a vague poem or song, but I'm not loving it for a game with so much energy applied to its cinematic qualities. You basically become Mario Bros. with racoon costumes and Goombas.

So in the end, I think the game is missing heart and empathy. I don't know why I should care about anything and the gameplay seems no more advanced than what I could find on Little Big Planet.

LUCA 👏 IS 👏 A 👏 GREAT 👏 MOVIE and here's why

The movie itself is just SO pleasing to the eye (Thanks to Disney's and Pixar's art studios collaborating i assume). Speaking of the movie's production, I always found that Disney/Pixar movies are always the ones that give THE BIGGEST IMPACT IN YOUR LIFE. Like I'm talking about SCARS-ON-YOUR-HEART kind of big impact (nOt the bad kind of scars tho). These movies always leave me crying on the ground, questioning my existence and most importantly, they never fail to cease my weak heart.

Ok so this movie is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL because it's a compelling story on its own but it has actual real life issues in it and it just makes it more HEARTFELT. And all of these issues are represented in such a BIG-BRAINED way. (Real life issues such as:

1) the bad experiences that lgbtq+ kids and adults always go through ['sea monsters' queer people not being accepted in 'Portorosso' society]

2) THE NEURODIVERGENCE!! like man the kids are neurodivergent and you can't tell me otherwise. The way all three of them stim, the boys looking out of place, alberto stealing collecting & hoarding stuff and giullia's & luca's "sorry, too much?" IS JUST- These representations are SO important for all the neurodivergent bbys who need to see more of themselves out there to know they're real, valid and LOVED.

3) There are way more stuff that were represented like disabled ppl [Massimo], bullying [Ercole], orphans/disowned kids with their found family [Alberto] and the history of REFUGEES in italy also depicted as the sea monsters.)

Now, what I really wanted to talk about was the WAY these representations were carefully implented into the movie. You see, my homophobic sister who has an impressive 'gaydar' (more impressive than mine sometimes) wasn't really able to see the queer coded characters [The lesbian sea monsters]. But I'm absolutely sure she and the homophobes noticed the interactions between luca & alberto ESPECIALLY near the end that are sure to be depicted as romantic by heteronormative standards if it was with a boy and a girl. But thankfully not exactly really but yeah, the subtle representation of the queer coded characters were subtle enough that my sister didn't spew hate and the whole homophobic 'what has the world become' crap at the end.

The happiness and gratefulness I felt to not hear the words of hate was OUT OF THIS WORLD (and that is proof of how messed up society is). Most of the time, my conservative family would always say homophobic crap when they see even the slightest of lgbtq+ content or even out of the blue. In the end, they'd always sleep like innocent babies while I would always bawl my eyes out silently and cry myself to sleep thinking I was the literal spawn of satan and that no one will accept me.

This style of representation is great for closeted kids who are stuck with their homophobic family on movie nights and just don't have the strength to not break down when they have to listen to the hate directed to people like them coming from their own family. FAMILY. My heart dies a little everytime they insult the characters I relate to and my heart can only take so much.

Anyway, I still can't get over how casual and normal the behaviors of neurodivergence were portrayed. Because sometimes most times, there are heartless, close-minded people that make fun of mentally ill people and those people are the ones I want to throw off a cliff. Though, till this day I still beg for more films or any content with good representation for all the minorities out there (poc, lgbtq+ people, disabled people & etc), I'm still thankful for this subtle kind of representation because even though it's small, it's actually huge and important to the people who need it, these subtle depictions of themselves can show that they are perfectly normal and valid just like any other person.

In conclusion, yes I like this movie very much.

When the need to shout overwhelms common sense.

Tumblr is evil, because meta-people hang out there and lure me into cockles flight analysis. I hang there reading other ppl thoughts and then I start thinking myself.

I don’t agree with many things but today I need to shout about the exchange of clothing, or rather, not exchange, but Jensen’s targeted campaign to dress Misha decently (in accordance with his own standards, taste and aesthetics).

Misha resisted for many years, but Jensen managed to slip that mountain of his supposedly unnecessary clothes on the pretext that he could no longer wear it for conventions: they laughed at him that he appeared in the same shirt twice, thrice, how many there needed for Misha to be  impressed, imbued with the problem of poor bunny Jens and agreed to accept all this junk.

Eventually, the fans noticed this and started collecting files about who, when, what they donned. Yeah, as if Jensen is such a small naive boy who haven’t seen it coming and does not know at all that all their gestures in public are examined almost through a magnifying glass - and even with it in some cases - and fans have a collective memory like a herd of elephants. He knew, just didn’t give a flying fck.

But it will be later, and in the now Jens patted himself on the head: “what a great idea and well executed plan and now Misha will look decent”.

Unfortunately, Misha, who has no taste at all, still managed to combine things from someone else's shoulder in such wild ways that at the sight of another defile of his colleague, Jensen’s eye, from which he usually cries, began to twitch and he was wildly grinding his teeth.

Jensen “I-follow-fashion, know how-to-wear stuff, and-look-drop dead gorgeous in any rag” had a cognitive dissonance: Misha is a very attractive dude with a great figure (and legs: Jensen, judging by his latest open mouth - insert foot, has this little kink), but his taste in clothing is a natural disaster.

And Jensen is “Mr.-Everything-should-be-perfect”, including the way his object of adoration looks in public.

So that Jensen can admire, be proud and internally die from “He’s mine, and everyone else can just drop dead from green envy”, and not fight the hug-and-cry reflex.

He’s essentially an owner, it’s very noticeable in many videos, but constantly demonstrates that state of mind “it’s mine, not yours, paws off, keep your hands away from my stuff”. He is a bit Tony Stark in this “don’t touch my stuff” way.

I still can’t see without cringing how Jared threw his hand over Misha’s neck (and did some other stuff), and Jensen instantly was “Red Alert! Red Alert! Battle Stations!”, pouted like a ferret and tensed significantly.

Then Jared thought “oops! bad move!”, removed his hand from Misha, took Jensen's hand and threw it over the neck of the target. Jensen instantly brightened - all was again right in his world.

Well, back to my train of thoughts: years passed, Jensen followed his line to dress Misha with the tenacity of a woodpecker. Misha periodically broke away and in a sudden fit of teenage riot dressed again in such a way that Jensen really wanted to take a spoon to his eyes.

But Jensen is very stubborn and, if he needs something, he rushes like a steam locomotive along clearly laid rails.

As a result, now we are seeing a picture that is noticeable if you sit down and watch a year’s worth videos from all the conventions in chronological order (I had to find something before cockles-mania overtook me and I did it - didn’t really watch, just opened it, skipped almost everything and moved on). Unfortunately I didn’t find what I was looking for but noticed the steady change in Misha’s general attire.

For the current year 2020, Jens has successfully executed his strategy, and Misha now dresses as if he is diving into Jensen’s closet on a daily basis.

All his clothes are either a-la Jensen or a-la Dean (which often is almost the same thing).

And Jensen, more than ever, when looking at Misha, is happy like an elephant, because the inner content, the appearance without clothes and the appearance in clothes finally came for him to one aesthetic denominator.

(I wrote it a couple of months ago when me and cockles met on a collision course. Now I go to quietly cry in shame in the darkest corner).

Happy Birthday to..ME!!  yes my birthday was recently it was last Thursday (April 2) I was a lil bit upset about it this year due to the circumstances. so we had to have a very low key one this year being you can't go out or go anywhere and you can't have ppl over so I was a bit upset that I couldn't share it with family and friends here but hopefully we'll be able to do that next year.  Although I couldn’t celebrate it with ppl they did make sure I got my presents lol  Stuff was dropped off at work for me so that was great. anyway there is some better pics of stuff below, so lets continue..

first thing is the Shadow of The Tomb Raider (Deluxe Double Vinyl) soundtrack set. above is the front and back covers shown I wanted it for my collection and it will go great with the Tomb Raider: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LP Record I got. I’m not going to open this the same as I did with the other one I’m just going to happily put it away in in my Tomb Raider collection.

I then also got Life is Strange Volume 3 of the comic series that goes of course well with Vol 2 I got for Xmas lol

and of course I did get the Rise of Skywalker on 4K with the Limited Edition packaging ppl know I like the Limited Edition versions so that is what they get me lol. I haven’t opened it yet but I will at some point soon. I have to say I do like the front cover of it tho.

Not only do I get them for Christmas but I got a Birthday Optimus Prime also.  I got a couple last year for my Birthday too.  but as for this one I really love his design he is from the new Cyberverse line of figures and I’d say he is about 5-6 inches tall? and as you can see they are starting to do Build A Figure thing with Transformers like they do with Marvel Legends

I did get the new Totaku Lara! I was so excited and happy to get her I’ll have her up next to the other one in no time!

Someone also got me the new Frozen II pop figures that just came out to go with the ones I got at Christmas. I’m going to have to get way more of those protective cases for all these pop things lol but speaking of Frozen...

a friend of mine got me these amazing statue/figurines from Japan their apparently made by of all things Sega?  but the detail on them is impressive.  I didn’t expect them but I really do like them alot.

On of the things I got was this lil Venom plush. He is about maybe 4-5 inches tall and I think hes just beyond super cute!!  when I opened the box he was in I was like “OMG!..”  lol  I’m actually a huge fan of the Character ever since he first appeared so this was perfect for me, I love him so much!

Also someone got me the WWE Elite Series 72 Becky Lynch I was actually on the look out for this one so I was more then happy to get it on my Birthday.

And finally.. I received 2 of the Black series figures I was looking for Count Dooku and the Knight of Ren 

The Knight of Ren looks really cool and I’m going to put him up next to my Kylo where he belongs, but I was most excited about...

..Getting Count Dooku!! I was excited when he was announced and was waiting for him to come out. I tried to pre-order him through Amazon but he wasn’t listed?!? but it is a good thing I didn’t cause someone already bought him for me. Also his packaging is all beat to hell but that is ok being I’m going to be opening him and putting him up with my other 6 inch guys. I’m just super happy to have him. 

That is pretty much what I got for my Birthday I did get a couple of gift cards too and a few dollars from relatives but sadly no partying this year becasue of everything going on hopefully next year.

Transgender Day of Remembrance - Some thoughts

Well, some years ago I organised a Tdor demonstration in Berlin, Brandenburger Tor, legally, with fuckin cop protection (what an irony) and today it is also time to remember some things which are always coming between us activists.

If I want to talk about my discrimination experiences, it is always hard to find a language. I know which words are wrong and I also know which definitions are bad and wrong. This is a result of my discrimination experiences. And I want to use this.

So I don´t use the words “trans” and “cis” and “inter” anymore. My experience is that people assosiate the “right” things with them, the things that the media tells them - mentally disturbed ugly men who want to become women by starting to cloth and style different, strange gay people in coloured bad choosen outfits dancing with unicorns in worn out hillybilly 80s discotheques. Sometimes even I am associate this. You know, all this is not my style. It´s not my life nor what I want to become. I fley the “lgbtiq*” community because I made just worse and worse experiences there. Exploitations (of the discrimination and “outsider” experiences and “identity”), exclusions, foreign determination and other forms of hierarchies and disrespect seemed common there, the music was shite and boring and the “artists” mostly untalented, uninspiring and really bad in what they did.

I never enjoyed these “queer parties” doesn´t matter if it were these typical “homo parties” with terrible 80s sound and German pop folk music or these black leather and whip parties where half of the crowd was having these exaggerated kajal & mascare “designs” while praying for some catholic punishment and ketamine in front of some always the same sounding heavy dark electro/dark techno that was yet banned out of the real club discos for several years nor these “lalalala i am a sweet pink riotgrrrl with a guitar” singsangsong concerts with always the same riffs, paroles and attitudes. “We” weren´t really accepted there ... hell no. Worst were these hippsterish feminist parties where half of the crowd was wearing these boring “don´t beat me” glasses which I am calling “career glasses” where you have to discuss anything about what you “may” do and what not including to define yourself while boring nasal voiced radio music is played in the background and no action is allowed because this is attended to be “unqueer” and therefor ... sexistic and patriarchal.

Anyhow, my taste in music and style was always (made) a problem in these scenes and to different to them and their collective taste in these seemed always to be the evidence of a crime. So I quit these scenes. And their language.

Also my experience is that feminists never really show distance from “cuntists” which disguise themselves as “(terf-) feminists” just to exclude and mock other women for this or that physical attribute, a very sick and ugly form of repeating mistakes you suffered from yourself before. These cuntists, as also the big and never really overcome reference to the cunt as the “core of all feminine” in feminism passed finally to bring me far away from this little sweet pseudoposition called feminism. And I think its more a form of a mask/identity nowadays than a real position. Because most things regarding stereotype genders are nowadays so clear that no one needs to build an ideology or position around it. Sure, this is also a result of the painful process of mass mind assignment and the bourgeoise education technics, but sorry, I can´t take anyone playing the fulltime macho/machista OR feminist serious. Both positions are quite too exaggerated, dumb and unhuman because so many evil shit has taken place in the last time in the name of feminism (also, especially against wrong assigned, inter and trans and other disadvantaged ppl.) while beeing/acting as a macho / machista is a selfevident thing to be wrong, stupid and to avoid for thousands of reasons.

So I am doing my activism just with a bunch of friends who have the same or similar claims, ideas and fights - we are all aware of the fact that the word “trans” f.e. is not only poisoned by the media and nothing to take or even be proud of - it is yet wrong and derrogative in its meaning.

Take the chemistry of old greek language - if two things are “cis”, it means they are on the same side while “trans” means in f.e. a molecule that the second thing is “on the other side”. There is also ortho (next side), para (two sides away) and so on. But only cis means “both together”. Yet this shows how stupid it is to repeat calling yourself (a) “trans” / “transgender” / “transsexual” while not having any serious problem with the shape of your body. Accepting the word “trans” means accepting the ideology of the “right” and the “wrong” body and therefor the theory that you and you body (in general) would be a problem that has to be treaten as a problem. Fuck that.

This is f.e. one thing why I am not connecting really with most other activists anymore. Another is that many/most are believing in strange and often stupid things like that society would just reject them and their existance and human rights for beeing mistaken while ignoring the psychodynamics of power.

I am also fed up with activists who believe in a peaceful revolution for their rights and acceptance - as if Stonewall Riot and all the other important and necessary processes would ever have happened just in a painless and peaceful way - Come back to reality and fight with us, pls!!

Another thing is that we live in a state of permanent oppression, including violence, stigmatisation and taking away our life quality with that. You can hide from seeing this, but anyhow - I don´t want to lie about that any longer.

The media is a bullshit - this is why I don´t read newspapers anymore. All the propaganda and stigmatising articles about the “strange beings who change their gender and where born as a man” and so on, you find em everywhere and in every of these shitpapers, so I will run or find my own press or die without knowing perfectly what is going on. This culture is not my culture, it is cutting away my experience, it is cutting away my life, my style, my knowledge, my ideas and my sexuality - while sexualising me and my sisters in a stupid, ugly and unsuppotably exploitative manner.

I say fuck you to a culture, society that is defining itself as an integrative, democratic dialogue culture while it is in reality a fucked up senseless powerplay and projection of some bunch of poison-filled, stressed and greed controlled human shit disguised in either sexy dresses or boring suits told to be sexy and/or neutral. I am not a part of this and I will never be.

Every nation that has laws which force me to be described as “male” in official documents for being born with a penis can suck my dixk and suffocate. You Too Can Have A Body Like Mine by Alexandra Kleeman

On the book jacket’s sleeve, Kathleen Alcott (not sure who she is, presumably an impt/well-known figure in contemporary literature) praises this book: “A terrifying and elegant talent you will not soon forget.” In contrast, I do actually want to forget about this book…. and I did, until I remembered that I have not penned down my thoughts abt this book.

I thought the book was weird, maybe you can manage to imply good interpretations - maybe the issues she is trying to raise are impt - body image, the mechanism of a cult, noise caused by an endless tirade of commercials and advertisement, consciousness, a sense of self + belonging, etc… but all of these are drowned in a foggy sea of plain weirdness.

Tbh, I did really like some parts, I did go wow that’s rly well-written. It made me think of tao lin’s taipei, like small revelations of things, things that people dismiss - these things are not a ‘big deal’, nevertheless it makes you think that ok so it’s not just me. Maybe I do have a bit of social anxiety, that’s why I can find traces of me in A, but most of the time this seething, electric sense of connectedness is eclipsed by the extreme alienness of sensations the character is experiencing. I also like parts where the narrative keeps questioning A’s sense of self, sometimes it rubs off on me, especially after reading Sam Harris’ Waking Up

Ok I’m gonna paste its synopsis on goodreads here:

“A woman known only as A lives in an unnamed American city with her roommate, B, and boyfriend, C, who wants her to join him on a reality dating show called That's My Partner! A eats mostly popsicles and oranges, watches endless amounts of television, often just for the commercials— particularly the recurring cartoon escapades of Kandy Kat, the mascot for an entirely chemical dessert—and models herself on a standard of beauty that exists only in such advertising. She fixates on the fifteen minutes of fame a local celebrity named Michael has earned after buying up a Wally's Supermarket's entire, and increasingly ample, supply of veal.

Meanwhile, B is attempting to make herself a twin of A, who in turn hungers for something to give meaning to her life, something aside from C's pornography addiction. Maybe something like what's gotten into her neighbors across the street, the family who's begun "ghosting" themselves beneath white sheets and whose garage door features a strange scrawl of graffiti: he who sits next to me, may we eat as one.”

I was reading it on the sleeve of the book jacket and thought… ummm. Weird. And sometimes it happens when I read a synopsis, so I thought of it as nothing - the impression dissipates as soon as I savor the book and have a good taste of what the book is trying to portray/drive at - replaced by a relief, a sense of familiarity. I thought I would arrive there, so I waited and it never came, not even on the last page. Like… the weirdness did not feel bizarre in a way that makes you wonder (I’d like to think of myself as having a good tolerance for strange things), it felt forced and synthetic… again maybe this is due to the fact that I do not have extreme paranoid tendencies, I think it’ll be good to have real ppl who do experience paranoia to testify whether the scenarios laid out are plausible, if they do, then probably my unfavorable view of this book emerged not out of the book’s lack of merits, but my incapability to absorb something I can’t relate with well enough

I liked this part where A mentions to her boyfriend C about a weird sighting of her neighbors, which C dismisses almost instantly. C is often capable of convincing her effortlessly, perhaps even unintentionally, that everything is fine, normal. I felt that this is done semiconsciously by C out of convenience, he does not want to bother entertaining probable, but seemingly ludicrous possibilities (low-level paranoid thoughts) - and A likes that, because it makes her think less crazy thoughts, nevermind that it leads her into thinking that she is the crazy one, and without her realizing creates an imbalance in their relationship’s dynamic (ie A needs C more than the reverse):

“Okay,” C said thoughtfully, as though he had made a decision. He put his phone in his pocket and pulled himself up to a standing position. “You are a sensitive person, you saw something weird, you feel spooked. No pun intended. There are plenty of reasons why what you saw might have happened, and some of them are weird. But some of them are just boring. You know? That family could have been going to some kind of school pageant. Or a birthday party. So you can ask yourself: Do I live in a weird town, or a boring town?”

I blinked at him.

“I’d say boring,” he added, nodding and then raising both eyebrows expectantly.

I loved his face, his bland white good-looking face. I believed in him and therefore in the boringness of my town. C was good at handling me. He made things suddenly, instantaneously normal, just by explaining them. He was like a magnifying glass, I only had to look through him to see the world in crisp detail. And he had a really nice smile and good teeth.

This is one of those “not a big deal” moments, and how the narrator jumps from C’s ability to his physical appearance, like his positive quality has a halo effect on his physical appearance (or maybe it’s the other way round), this thought process seems very natural, how your mind jumps from one thing to another, following a pattern

I also think this is very well written, how A describes her gaze direction which relies on her boyfriend’s - a subtle hint at the commensalistic tendencies their relationship is developing:

I went over and got under the blanket with him. I tucked my feet in under his things and looked where he was looking.

Also this kind of self-inquiry, the idea that your sense of self is constantly evolving, it assumes and loses its shape constantly - reminiscent of Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend, only here told directly and real-time instead of being inferred through a nostalgic rewind:

Think this through, I said to myself. Just because you weren’t the person he thought you were doesn’t mean that you won’t be that person at some other time, someday. It doesn’t mean you’re not you.

And this separation between inner and outer lives, which to some might seem like an act of hypocrisy:

What bothered him, what seemed filthy, was the emotional aspect, the way I had dictated the personal. “You need them not only to be doing something for you but also feeling some specific way about it,” C said. A begging quality had entered C’s voice. C said: “Why can’t you just let people have their own inner lives, as long as they’re doing pretty much what they’re supposed to do with their outer lives?”

Plus substituting your object of desire as a coping mechanism, citing classic sociology studies:

Baby monkeys taken from their mothers will form attachments to fake mothers made of cloth or electrified wire, ducklings with no parents will imprint on a cardboard box with an alarm clock ticking inside of it. Wanting things was a substitute for wanting people, one of the best possible substitutes.

And lastly, what keeps you from going batshit crazy (like in Han Kang’s The Vegetarian, it is a very thin thread we are holding on to with all our might):

“Are you one of those people who acts normal, but is secretly about to chuck their lives and disappear?” I asked. If that were the case, I wasn’t going to waste my time getting to know him. I knew that we’d be dating for a while, at least, when he laughed several times, loudly, and kissed me for what was then the third or fourth time ever.

“Yeah, right. No way. Neither are you,” he said. “I’ve seen that on TV, those dads, and it is nuts. No way. Everything’s worked out great for me since whenever, I don’t have any plans to make it complicated. Besides, I’m attached to my material goods.”

What material goods? I wondered. Then I followed the arc of his arm pointing to a location across the room. He had been referring to his collection of DVDs, heaps of horror and comedy and porn, stacked together in a pile the size of a small love seat.

But these parts are more or less detached from the main crux of the story, I found myself slowly growing a particular dislike toward Kandy Kat’s commercials, and the ridiculous (not absurd) appeal of the cult…. Idk, it felt like the narrative invents a problem then attempts to solve it, instead of borrowing one from real life and emphasizing it

So yeah, I’m open to read more of Kleeman’s stuff, she nails interesting observations, and this book is fun to read at times, despite my complaints
