What Is An Au Pair?

The word au pair is a French term that means “equal to”.

An au pair is usually a young female (although sometimes families are open to host male au pairs) who wants to travel, learn a new language, explore a new culture and enjoy herself in a new country.

She will be hosted by a local family and will be considered and treated as part of the family, in exchange for a few hours of childcare and light household duties each day.

What An Au Pair Is Not

When searching for a host family, make sure you thoroughly discuss what your duties and responsibilities will be.

Some host families exploit their au pairs, pushing them into doing long hours of work, especially cleaning around the house.

You are not supposed to care for the parents, clean up after them or iron their clothes. As an au pair, you’re there to care for the children only.

I had an experience in London, where my host mother asked me to iron her husband’s shirts, as she was feeling too tired (she was pregnant). I agreed to do it once, although I mentioned that it was not in my job description.

The next day she came with a bigger pile of clothes to iron, and the day after she wanted me to do their laundry, which created a conflict and I ended up leaving soon after. An au-pair is not:

    Benefits Of Becoming An Au Pair

You probably won’t’ become rich by working as an au pair, but there are many benefits to the job. 

Therefore, it’s very important that both parties (the host family and the au pair) are satisfied with the arrangements they make.

Au pairs have all expenses covered, so all of your pocket-money will be for you to use however you want.

Your host family will provide you with 3 meals a day, a private bedroom, possibly a language course, a public transportation pass and even cover your airplane tickets.

Make sure your host family will cover the minimum legal requirements, but always seek a family who is willing to go above and beyond with the perks.

Those are usually the ones who won’t try to exploit you.

Remember that for the families, having an au pair is very, very affordable. Nannies would cost them 3 times more, so don’t be shy when searching for good perks!

I became an au pair because I wanted to travel and had no financial ability to do so. I was also interested in improving my English skills, conquering some personal independence, and meeting new people around the world.

Becoming an au pair seemed like the most logical way to start and since then, I have never stopped traveling.

Payment & Hours Of Work

Every country has its own regulations as far as working hours are concerned.

Within Europe, an au pair usually works around 25-30 hours a week with a day off, usually on Sundays.

In my experience, basically all weekends are free, meaning plenty of time to explore your new host country.

In the United States, an au pair is expected to work about 40-45 hours a week with a day off, and yes… you might only get one day off!

In both cases, you might be expected to babysit a couple of nights a week. This should be arranged beforehand with your host family.

The Pay

As an au pair, you won’t have official legal status as an employee, but rather, you’re considered a temporary family member who receives pocket money.

Salaries vary a lot depending on which country you choose to work in.

Some offer little pocket-money and it almost doesn’t make any sense to work there, unless you really want to experience that country and culture or learn the language.

Others, however, can be a bit more appealing and you’ll be able to save and travel some more.

If you’re an au pair in the USA, you’ll receive $195.75 USD minimum per week, in Canada you’ll receive approximately $330 CAD per week, while in the UK, you can expect 80 – 85 GBP per week. Check this website for more information on au pair wages.

How To Find an Au Pair Position

There are many ways to find an au pair position.

The most recommended (safe) way is through an agency, which will charge you a fee to match you with a potential family.

The downside of this is the fee. The upside is that the host family is vetted by the company, and if things go wrong, you can change host families.

Have a look at recommended, reputable sites like Au Pair World or Au Pair.com.

Sadly, the poor experiences I had came through host families I found on agency websites. And, in my experience, if you have problems with one family, the next won’t be so keen on hiring you. 

Another way to find au pair positions is by searching on forums, online groups or online agencies that won’t charge a finder’s fee, or, you could put a small ad in a cafe, or local newspaper and wait to be contacted.

The downside of this, is not knowing if you’re being scammed or if you’ll be safe, so a lot of previous contact, including Skype calls, is highly recommended.

If you’re an active Couchsurfer, place an ad in one of the au pair groups. That’s how I actually ended up in Switzerland. I will be using this method from now on, as most families have a full profile, references, and people who have vouched for them, and hey… it’s free!

My Personal Au Pair Experiences

I’ve just finished my short-term au pair job in Switzerland.

I was lucky to have the best host family in the world and to be able to live in the most expensive city in the world – Zürich- with ALL expenses covered.

My host mother paid my flights and drove me around, showing me incredible parts of Switzerland which I would probably never think of visiting.

She went above and beyond to make me feel happy. I had a private master suite bedroom with a huge balcony all to myself and views over the mountains and Zurich city.

While being an au pair in the USA I had a similar experience.

My host family was wonderful and I truly felt like part of the family. During this time, I had the opportunity to explore part of the east coast with other au pairs and new friends.

In fact, my host family and I became such good friends that I even returned a few times for short-term placements. Sixteen years after this experience, we’re still in touch and care for each other deeply….but things are not always so positive.

I’ve been an au pair in London twice, and both experiences were extremely negative.

Curiously, most of my London-based au pair friends were also having problems with their families. I’ve noticed that many British families tend to use their au pairs as cheap labor and ended up treating them as maids.

Most of my au pair friends had extremely rude and disrespectful children to deal with, and the parents always stood by their children’s side, creating a lot of friction and conflict.

Exploring Zurich – Switzerland in 2014

In another situation, I was about to pack my bags and fly to San Francisco, California for this summer as an au pair.

There was a family who had been sending me invitations and things looked pretty solid. I was extremely excited, but suddenly they declined their offer because I’m a vegetarian.

This is why it’s so important to exchange a lot of emails and really get to know one another before agreeing to an au pair job.

In Conclusion

Becoming an au pair can be one of the most rewarding and safest ways to travel the world while having basically all of your expenses covered.

This is also a great option for beginner solo female travelers who have a wanderlust bigger than life, but still feel insecure and nervous to set off into the world on their own.

I definitely recommend becoming an au pair. It’s a great way to make money, meet new people and learn about different cultures.

I agree with president Trump. In my opinion it is quite possible for a two state system to work but that would require the Arabs/Palestinians to no longer have an extreme radical "Jihad" Mindset towards Israel and that can be achieved by Israel opening up the border to Gaza and removing its stranglehold on Gaza. I do not believe the Palestinians living in Gaza want unfriendly terms with Israel or want to join Hamas in attacking Israel but as long as Netanyahu continues his hard stance on Gaza and as long Netanyahu continues his military occupation of Gaza, I do not foresee peace between the Jews and Palestinians. I do not put all the blame on Netanyau or Israel the Palestinians are to blame as well so its going take some work but it can be done. I believe with a freer Gaza there will be deescalation of hatred and violence from the Palestinian side and therefore less military force from Israel. Another thing is I believe the United States and Trump need to stay disengaged from that conflict unless we have no choice. Israel is a thriving nation and can defend its self. We also have to stop giving Israel billions of Americas dollars and billions of military aid every year."America first" Mr. President, that includes Israel.

GOING AFTER DEM – Barbadians will have five political parties from which to choose when they go to the polls in the next general election, constitutionally due next year. Yesterday morning the United Progressive Party (UPP) led by former Barbados Labour Party (BLP) senator Lynette Eastmond, announced its presence during a press conference at the Courtyard by Marriott. The UPP now joins the Barbados Integrity Movement and Solutions Barbados on the expanding list of fringe parties seeking to reshape the political landscape dominated by the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) and the Opposition BLP. It is also the second political party featuring disenchanted BLP members to have sprung seemingly out of nowhere in recent weeks, behind BIM to which former Member of Parliament for St Michael South Central David Gill, unsuccessful candidate for St John Hutson Griffith and Sylvan Greenidge, the former personal assistant to then Prime Minister Owen Arthur, have been linked. Eastmond herself had also been linked with BIM before she ruled herself out. The growing list of BLP defectors involved in the new political movements has given rise to speculation that Arthur and expelled BLP parliamentarian Dr Maria Agard may play a role in one of these entities. However, the former Minister of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Business Development in an Arthur-led BLP administration from 2003 to 2008 declined to comment on the possibility of either or both joining the ranks. In fact, Eastmond refused to disclose who had joined her party, leaving her as not only the face of the UPP, but one of a handful of known members. Fringe parties here are normally viewed with suspicion and are seldom taken seriously, as evidenced by comments on social media following the launch of both Solutions Barbados and BIM. It is something of which Eastmond suggested she was aware, as she urged Barbadians to judge the viability of the new entity on the ability of its yet to be announced candidates to do the job and not on their ability to attract political heavyweights. She contended that the time had come for Barbadians to look past “the pretty talk and vote for persons who could deliver”. The former BLP St Philip West candidate also acknowledged that her party was being launched at the so-called eleventh hour. However, she was unperturbed, suggesting that UPP operatives had been working clandestinely on the ground. An optimistic Eastmond also said the party would have all its ducks in row by the last quarter of this year, a plan hinging on the hope that Prime Minister Freundel Stuart would not ring the election bell much sooner. ESTWICK DIMISSES EASTMOND’S UPP AS A WASTE – Minister of Agriculture and Water Resource Management Dr David Estwick is not shaking in his boots in fear of the latest political party to emerge here. Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) reject Lynette Eastmond today introduced the United Progressive Party (UPP), although she refused to disclose who would run for her fledgling party. Estwick, who defeated Eastmond in St Philip West, paid little attention to the new party, casually dismissing the former Minister of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Business Development as nothing more than a three-time loser. “The only comment I would make at this time is this: If after three election defeats – 2003, 2008 and 2013 this is how she wants to spend her time, I wish her well in her endeavours,” he told Barbados TODAY. Estwick was not the only one disregarding Eastmond, who could not convince political scientist Peter Wickham that the new party would be relevant. Wickham said the UPP’s chairman had a personal axe to grind and the party had been formed, not because of diverging political ideologies but by “Eastmond’s difficulties with the current leadership of the BLP”. “She ran as a BLP candidate under Owen Arthur and the fact that she has no longer been chosen as a BLP candidate under Mia Mottley speaks volumes. So to leave the organization and to go outside says to me that she doesn’t have problems with the Barbados Labour Party itself but she has problems with Mia Mottley because she ran as a BLP candidate. “This is especially so in a situation where the DLP [Democratic Labour Party] has not considered taking her as a candidate on this occasion. So her response is to go off and start a third party. So it feels kind of personal ” Wickham contended. Eastmond had previously been linked to the recently formed Barbados Integrity Movement, comprising disgruntled members of the BLP. She shut down the suggestion last month as propaganda, insisting she was “not a member of any new political party”. “Unless they expelled me, I am still a member of the Barbados Labour Party,” she was quoted as telling one local newspaper. She had also given a subtle hint of what was to come by stating she was still a political enthusiast and was looking forward to the next general election. However, Wickham told Barbados TODAY he did not foresee the UPP having any impact on the next general election, while dismissing suggestions that the new party would split the opposition votes. For this to happen, the pollster argued, the UPP would have to attract candidates of stronger political mettle since Eastmond did not have the presence which could reshape the political landscape. “If you have a detractor in the shape of an Owen Arthur for example, I think that would be something that could create some political sensation. But if you have a BLP detractor who as a BLP candidate has never won an election, then what exactly are you projecting?  She [Eastmond] ran in the last three elections and lost . . . so she is a detractor but not a successful detractor. “If you were able to attract a person who was a member of Parliament, like the example of the NDP under Dr Richard Haynes and he started off with himself and two other successful candidates for the National Democratic Party and ultimately he won a seat. So to say that she is a detractor is not something I agree with,” he said. At the party’s launch at the Courtyard by Marriott this morning, Eastmond urged Barbadians to judge the viability of the new entity based on its candidates’ ability to do the job and not on their ability to attract political heavyweights. She contended that the time had come for Barbadians to look past “the pretty talk” and vote for candidate who can deliver. (BT)

NO BIG DEAL – Good for her but the new party will not make a difference to local politics. This was the assessment of political consultant and director of Caribbean Developmental Research Services (CADRES), Peter Wickham, to the news that Barbados Labour Party member Lynette Eastmond had come out as the chairperson of the island’s newest party, the United Progressive Party, yesterday. “I congratulate her for forming a new party but I don’t really know that it is going to make an impact on the politics of Barbados,” was Wickham’s assessment of the news. The political analyst said Eastmond’s record as a politician was “not exactly outstanding” and wondered if she would garner public support and eventually votes to secure a seat in the House of Assembly.  (WN)

AUTHUR DISMISSED BLP PAY CONCERNS – Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur said there was a big difference between the 15 to 23 per cent pay hikes that trade unions here have been demanding, and the recent restoration of the ten per cent that was cut from the salaries of parliamentarians and other senior Government officials. Arthur has rejected out of hand, recent attempts by the Mia Mottley-led Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to link the two issues, saying it was nothing more than “public relations grandstanding” on the part of the main Opposition. Late last month the BLP walked out of Parliament after Government tabled a resolution to restore the amount given up by the politicians back in 2014 at the height of austerity, insisting they would not accept any restoration until public servants, who have been waiting for over six years for an increase, were granted a pay rise. In tabling the resolution, Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler was careful to point out it was not a salary increase, but a case of Government honouring its promise to restore the ten per cent, which was initially due to be repaid at the end of 19 months. At the time Sinckler had also said the pay cut, which was originally due to end by March 31, 2015, had been extended for an additional year. In breaking his silence on the matter, Arthur was critical of the stance taken by the party and the MPs he once led. The independent Member of Parliament for St Peter, who quit the BLP back in 2014, argued that it was one thing for trade unions to demand a pay hike at the height of financial difficulty and quite another to give back to politicians that which they agreed to give up during a period of austerity. KEEP OPTIONS OPEN – The Barbados economy is at the point where all options should be on the table. The advice is coming from Barbadian Omar Gadsby, who is a high-ranking official of the international bank Credit Suisse where he oversees US$50 billion in bond mutual fund assets of the Zurich, Switzerland-based bank’s wealthy clients. Gadsby said Barbados, faced with a ballooning debt, low growth, and weakening competitiveness, was now at its most vulnerable in post-independence history. The financial expert has suggested an open and deep dialogue with International Monetary Fund (IMF) and a critical analysis of the currency peg. (WN)

CTO KEEPING CLOSE TABS ON BARBADOS - Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) Hugh Riley says he is closely monitoring the debate over the proposed construction of a Hyatt hotel here, as well as Barbados’ deficit economic position, which has come in for increased scrutiny in recent weeks amid dwindling foreign exchange reserves. However, Barbados-born regional tourism boss Thursday refused to be drawn into the ongoing controversy surrounding both issues as he skilfully sidestepped reporters questions during a media conference at his Warrens, St Michael office, called to report on the Caribbean’s overall tourism performance. With Prime Minister Freundel Stuart due to give the final go ahead for the project, all Riley would say when asked about Hyatt was that brand name hotels played a role in attracting visitors from some source markets, “particularly if you are talking about markets like the United States, which are major producers of business. Since the announcement of the planned $100 million Hyatt Centric Resort there have been several objections, with social activist David Comissiong promising to bring a lawsuit if an environmental impact assessment was not done, which would include widespread public input. The Barbados National Trust had also cited environmental concerns. However, the Chief Executive Officer of Terra Caribbean Andrew Mallalieu and some business owners in the area had already thrown their support behind the proposed 15-storey project. Chairperson of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) Roseanne Myers also seemingly welcomed the Hyatt, saying it would add to the island’s business sector marketability. In relation to the island’s economic performance, Riley said: “Clearly that is something we pay a great deal of attention to because . . . measuring the number of people that come to your country is one thing, but making sure that what we do is profitable and we get the maximum benefit for our people from this engine called tourism, that is something that we keep our eye on always.” (BT)

TOURISM FALL OFF – Travel to the Caribbean is expected to slow somewhat this year, following a mixed 2016 in which hotel performance was generally down but arrivals from most key markets were up. Overall, the region welcomed a record 29.3 million long-stay visitors, which represents a 4.2 per cent increase over the previous year. Cruise arrivals were also up 1.3 per cent to 26.3 million, accounting for 33.7 per cent of all cruise deployments in 2016. And consistent with those improvements, total visitor spend increased by about 3.5 per cent last year, reaching US$35.5 billion. However, Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) Hugh Riley told reporters Thursday that while those were “considerable reasons to celebrate”, there were also several concerns, with the rate of tourism growth expected to slow to between 2.5 per cent and 3.5 per cent in 2017. BARBADOS GEARS UP FOR CARIFESTA - A proposed Caribbean shopping centre during the staging here of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) this year is generating global interest, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. In a release issued through its public relations consultants, Finer Points Consultants Inc, the ministry said in addition to the eight Caribbean Community countries that had confirmed their participation in CARIFESTA XIII, there had been interest in the Grand Market and Buyer’s Shopping Mall from as far as the Middle East. “In addition to early confirmers Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Guyana, Montserrat and St Lucia, there has been interest shown in the regional showcase from international buyers in Colombia, North America, Europe the Middle East as well as from other Caribbean islands, who have a special interest in one of the major events for the festival – the Grand Market and Buyer’s Shopping Mall,” it said. “The Caribbean’s first mega mall is expected to feature the widest range of Caribbean creative products under one roof with over 300 booth spaces available.”    Barbados will host CARIFESTA from August 17 to 27 under the theme, Asserting Our Culture, Celebrating Ourselves; and in addition to the Grand Market which will be held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, there will be a number of entertainment events at various venues across the island “where the extensive talent of this region will be showcased”, the release stated. According to the ministry, plans are being made for two super concerts, three signal events and nightly performances from the various country delegations. Many of the venues, including some schools, are currently at various stages of refurbishment in preparation for the festival, last hosted here in 1981. The ministry has issued a call for the submission of interest from community groups and people interested in producing their own events, which can be promoted on the official CARIFESTA calendar. “These creative fringe functions will permit artistic and resourceful individuals or groups the opportunity to design and develop events which can be seen by regional counterparts who will be visiting at the time,” the release stated. The ministry said a number of committees had been formed to manage the various areas of the festival, which will take place in different venues around the island. (BT)

FILM’S GREAT PROMISE – A UK-based film producer believes there is much promise for the development of a film industry in Barbados. Frank Layne, director of Upstream Films and Television, said he believes Barbados has what it takes to become a powerhouse in the industry. Speaking exclusively to Bajan Vibes last month, Layne who is the producer of Bajan Heat, a film project in the works, said they were looking to press ahead with the project on which work started in 2008 but had to be put on hold after the global recession emerged. He said the pilot, Bajan Heat, was shot in Barbados and features many local actors.  He said they are ready to get things going again to produce a full film or a series. Layne said the producers are looking for local investors in order to properly produce the film. “We have got some investors already. We have got an expression of interest from BBC and ITV in the UK but we need to do a little bit more work on it. So the objective is to get some local investors to come on board, sit alongside us and to promote it,” he said. Layne said he was sure the film would do well in Barbados because Barbados has what it takes to produce quality work. “I think this country has all the ingredients. All we really need is the will. I think you’ve got the political will already. All you need is some local entrepreneurial spirit to support a well-structured film industry.” he said. Layne said he believes a local film industry would be of great benefit to the country. “I think you would see a big influx in tourists and it would secure 200 or 300 jobs for locals. I think it would be an enormous benefit to the country. You can’t buy that type of marketing,” he said.  (BT)

RUM INITIATIVE GOING DOWN THE WRONG ROAD – A newly launched initiative by the state-run Barbados Tourism Product Authority (BTPA), which encourages wider use and consumption of Barbadian rum among locals and visitors, has attracted stern criticism from President of the Barbados Road Safety Association Sharmane Roland-Bowen. The initiative, launched earlier this week at the historic Sunbury Plantation and dubbed Barbados Sugar and Rum Season, also seeks to sensitize owners of restaurants, bars and nightclubs to the story of rum and its value to the economy, as well as to enhance the island’s cultural heritage and culinary tourism product. However, an incensed Roland-Bowen complained Thursday that the new programme flies directly in the face of her organization’s efforts to stop people from drinking and driving. In fact, she argued that it was a promotion of drink driving on the part of the tourism authorities, despite the fact that there was still no specific legislation to deter such, or any breathalyzer testing in place. Just last month the BRSA launched its War on Drunk Driving campaign in the hope of reducing alcohol consumption by vehicle operators. And while she did not have any statistical evidence to present, Roland Bowen was convinced that alcohol consumption was a factor in many instances. She had also revealed findings of a recent survey carried out among a small group of tourists which indicated that more than half of them did not feel safe on the island’s roads. However, she said based on those results none appeared to be put off by the likelihood of the island introducing breathalyzer testing and the accompanying legislation. “What are they waiting for, for more people to die and more blood to be shed on our roads? It is wrong, it is wrong,” said Roland-Bowen at the time. As part of the campaign, the BRSA has written to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, Minister of Transport & Works Michael Lashley, Minister of Health John Boyce and Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite as the first targets of an official lobbying effort. Today, Roland-Bowen said Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy would be next in line, in light of the launch of the Barbados Sugar and Rum Season. (BT)

FLIGHT NURSE - A damning picture has been painted of the state of nursing here, with many of the health care professionals said to be fleeing due to adverse working conditions. Outgoing President of the Barbados Nurses Association (BNA) Blondelle Mullin Wednesday night revealed that late pay, poor security and working conditions, and inadequate tools have been par for the course for nurses for much too long, with no apparent end in sight. Consequently, she told the BNA’s annual general meeting at Accra Beach Resort in Rockley, Christ Church, nurses were becoming despondent, leading to an “exodus of nurses from the workforce, from Barbados, or out of the profession altogether. Those left, she charged, were so overworked because of an undermanned health care system, that they often suffered from “burn out”. Already thinly stretched, Mullin complained, the nurses were being asked to work way beyond the call of duty and were being assigned to take on additional tasks at new or extended health care facilities. The health care givers sometimes faced “issues with burglary and security issues” at the Geriatric Hospital “with main doors not locked at night, and intruders use it to hide and steal nurses’ property. Added to these concerns, nurses were often called upon to work long hours, yet they were paid late and received supplies late at best, the retired nurse said. And with the struggling economy affecting Government’s ability to address all the grave concerns, Mullin suggested “if nurses cannot be compensated in pay, due to the economical challenges, at least their working conditions should be better”. TWO MANY PROBLEMS WITH NHC HOUSE – Enid Torrence bought a house from the National Housing Corporation (NHC) in 2011 and thought it was a new structure. But the St Philip resident soon realised that all that “glitters is not gold” and had to contend with faulty windows, shrinking doors and bathroom plumbing that quickly fell apart. Torrence told the WEEKEND NATION that she had been calling the NHC’s general manager Lanette Napoleon-Young since 2011 to have the problems rectified but the issues remained. “When I came one of the window panes had a crack in it. The two windows in the bedroom, one I have never been able to get it opened and the other when I open it the entire bottom panel of the sash window would just slam down, eventually it just fell out,” Torrence said at her Marchfield, St Philip home Wednesday. BULLYING STILL A PROBLEM – Bullying has reared its ugly head again in some secondary schools. WEEKEND NATION investigations revealed that within the past two weeks, at least two parents had requested transfers for their children who were bullied and beaten by their peers. One situation became so bad the parent removed her daughter from a St Michael school and sought private tutoring. According to a person close to the family, the decision was taken after the teenaged girl was continually being bullied by a group of girls from the same school. In one instance, the girl had to seek private medical attention after an attack by the gang resulted in several injuries to her face and eyes. (WN)

BELLEPLAINE BEGGING FOR SEWAGE RELIEF – Clean the sewer system that handles our waste. That is the cry from Belleplaine Housing Area residents to the National Housing Corporation (NHC). They said the sewer piping has been backing up for the last three weeks. Richard Griffith said the scent of the sewage was bad, especially at night in his St Andrew district. He said he called the NHC and told them of the situation but no one responded because the stench was still evident. (WN)

The black 18-inch “Mongoose” bicycle was recovered around 6:30 p.m. on  Thursday, January 12 at Nelson Street, St Michael. GUILTY PLEA MAN ADMITS TO INDECENTLY ASSAULTING 7-YEAR-OLD GIRL – A Vincentian-born man has admitted to indecently assaulting a seven-year-old girl back in 2015. Joseph Augustin Cummings appeared before Madam Justice Michelle Weekes this morning in the No. 2 Supreme Court where he pleaded guilty to carrying out the September 1, 2015 crime when he was 46 years old. The court heard from Crown Counsel Oliver Thomas that the minor was dropped off by her parents at the grandmother’s home where she was to spend the day. Later in the afternoon, the grandmother allowed the little girl to go outside to play. The court heard that Cummings lifted the child, who went into the laundry room, through a window into his adjoining apartment and took her into his bedroom. The facts by the prosecutor also revealed that he undressed the child and proceeded to kiss her in a rough manner, biting her tongue in the process. He also kissed other parts of the child’s body for what she said felt “like a long period”. “This was also done roughly, which caused some discomfort and pain to the virtual complainant, but she did not cry or tell him to stop,” Thomas told the court. Cummings then proceeded to perform oral and other sexual acts on the minor. It was sometime during the act that the grandmother called out to the little girl and she left, fully clothed, and went back through the same window that Cummings had pulled her through. When the minor reached her grandmother who was in bed at the time, she was questioned and she revealed what had taken place. Thomas said the child told the grandmother it was not the first time that Cummings had done such a thing, but she did not say anything before because she was scared. The matter was reported to the police and Cummings was taken into custody. While being interviewed by investigators about the matter, the man allegedly said: “Let me tell you the truth, that happened by accident. That whole week I did seeing a funny vision in my sleep and I was just playing wid she and it get out of hand.” Cummings continued: “. . . It was something like magic that come over me, cause me and them by the house where I live and where this happened . . . does live good and I like a part of the family.” Cummings told police that the child was in the habit of coming by, playing and making jokes. “That day she was playing with my head . . . She play with my beard and then she . . . throw she hands round me and start to kiss me on my face,” he said in his statement which gave a detailed account of what had occurred. Thomas told the court that Cummings was taken back to the house and he pointed out the area where the incident occurred, and said, “the little girl was sitting right here and this is where we made love.” After the facts were revealed, the judged ordered a pre-sentencing report on Cummings and a report on his time spent on remand at HMP Dodds. He returns to court on April 5.  (BT)

VISITOR PLACED ON BOND AFTER REFUSING TO LEAVE CHURCH – A visiting business development manager, who arrived in the country mid-January and was granted a 90-day stay, is under strict court order to keep the peace while on the island. Magistrate Douglas Frederick today imposed a six-month bond on Jared Pudney, 33, who is currently staying at #42 Bow Belle, Atlantic Shores, Christ Church, after he pleaded guilty to refusing to leave the premises of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, having been directed to do so by Simon Emtage, a person authorized by the owner. According to the facts read by police prosecutor Sergeant Martin Rock, Emtage is a member of the church which is located at #4 Neils, St Michael. On January 18, a private, invitation-only function was taking place at the church where Emtage was also the venue manager. Pudney arrived there around 4:20 p.m. in a car, accompanied by another person, although they had previously been warned not to venture on to the church’s premises. They refused to leave when asked to do so and had to be forcibly removed by church members. After hearing from Pudney, Magistrate Frederick imposed the bond. If he breaches it, he will have to spend one month in prison. (BT)

TEEN ADMITS TO BURGLARY – An 18-year-old was today remanded to HMP Dodds pending sentencing, after pleading guilty to burglary. Joreon Revaldo Cumberbatch, of Yearwood Road, Black Rock, St Michael, admitted to Magistrate Douglas Frederick that he entered the home of Sylvia Pitt as a trespasser and stole a car stereo worth $700, five bottles of wine worth $125 and two bottles of vodka worth $270. The court heard that Pitt secured her house before leaving home on the morning of January 19, 2017. However, when she returned later in the evening, she realized that there were two small holes in the window of the laundry room. She conducted a search of the house, according to prosecutor Sergeant Martin Rock, and discovered the items missing. The matter was reported to police and Cumberbatch, who was not previously known to the law courts, was arrested and charged. The prosecutor made an application for a restitution order for the stereo, which the magistrate granted, so that Pitt could get back the property. Magistrate Frederick then ordered a pre-sentencing report to find what has been occurring in the teenager’s life, in preparation for sentencing. Cumberbatch returns to court on February 22.  (BT)

BROTHER OF MURDER VICTIM TESTIFIES ABOUT GUN DEAL – A man who watched his older brother die when an alleged gun deal went horribly wrong, today gave details of what occurred on the night six years ago. Christopher Ashby gave evidence in the murder trial in which 27-year-old Damien Lecoursey Reveira, of 4th Avenue New Orleans, St Michael, is accused of killing his brother, Anderson, on October 9, 2010. The 31-year-old was fatally shot in the left side of the chest while at Belfield, Black Rock, St Michael. The court heard from Christopher that he wanted to purchase a gun and spoke to his cousin Derek Springer, whom he calls Omar, about it. He said he met with Springer on October 8, 2010 in Broad Street, The City, and two other men were in the vehicle in which his cousin was travelling. Answering questions posed by Principal Crown Counsel Elwood Watts, Christopher said he left Bridgetown in the vehicle and went to Fairfield, Black Rock where he met with Dario Herbert. However, he said he did not have all the money, so he went home to Church Hill Road, Christ Church and spoke with his brother. He added that he then contacted his cousin, Springer, via phone, and he later collected them. They headed back to Fairfield, met with Herbert and the money was paid up front, even though they had to go to another location to collect. Christopher said they drove to a playing field after 9 p.m. and Herbert told him “it was on the benches”. He said Herbert went ahead of them and “spoke to somebody” and “spot a cell phone [light]” to count the money. “I said to myself, ‘very much people counting [this] money’.” Christopher said a man wearing a white shirt then walked off to the pavilion side of the field and came back with a gun in his hand. The witness said the man made a motion to pass the firearm to his brother, who was standing approximately two feet behind him. As he tried to turn to see what was taking place, he realized that “someone was locking off my hand”. He later identified that person as Herbert. “Somebody pushed a gun in my belly . . . told me ‘don’t move’. At the same time, my brother was scuffling with two other persons,” Christopher testified. “Some shots were fired in the direction my brother and the others were scuffling in.” He explained that he held the gun that was in his stomach and moved it but two shots were discharged and he “was grazed . . . to my left.” Christopher then looked for his brother whom he had last seen standing not too far away from him. “My brother wasn’t there. He was further off and I noticed that the  guy [in the white shirt] and Herbert ran off,” he testified, adding that five to six shots were fired that night. Christopher also admitted that he could only identify those whom he went to the playing field with, including Herbert, and “partially” the man who held him at gunpoint. “I shout for my brother . . . I noticed that he was laying on the ground flat on his back. When I checked on him I realized that [his] left side was soaked with blood,” Christopher said. He then dragged his brother to the road and ran to a house for help. He said a lady responded and Anderson was taken into the house where he died. Asked by Watts what became of Springer, Christopher responded: “Before what really happen, happened, Omar ran off. I see Omar jumping over de fence . . . and drove off.” He said he never received a gun that night, neither did he get back his $1,000. When he was cross-examined by defence attorney Andrew Pilgrim, QC, Christopher admitted that he did not know who had shot his brother. “Well, at that point in time I didn’t know,” he said. The case continues tomorrow with Madam Justice Jacqueline Cornelius presiding. (BT)

TWO CRASH VICTIMS SENT HOME – The bodies OF two of the teenage Vincentian girls killed in last week’s car crash at Graeme Hall, Christ Church should be back in their homeland today. Yesterday morning, the bodies of Danee Horne and Aziza Dennie were taken to the shallow draught at the Barbados Port by Keith Jones Funeral Home. They subsequently left on the Melinda II around 4 p.m. But with the costs behind the preparations and shipping of their bodies expected to reach about $5 000 to $6 000 each, one of the businesses involved in getting them back to St Vincent is lending its assistance to help the families. Mark Hassell, director for local shipping agency Eric Hassell Son, agent for the vessel, said the company decided to waive the $800 fee per body following the MIDWEEK NATION’s story on the costs involved. TRANSPORT BOARD SLAMS BRAKES ON NAPSAC – Faced with its own “challenges” to adequately service the various routes to which it is assigned, the Transport Board has slammed the brakes on the National Primary Schools’ Athletic Championship (NAPSAC). Organizers of the event, the National Sports Council, have been told the state-owned transportation provider would not furnish busses for the next round of the contest due to be held on Monday at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies. “We have already said to NAPSAC that unfortunately, due to our own challenges we are unable to provide the buses to cover NAPSAC this year,” Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager at the Transport Board Lynda Holder told Barbados TODAY. This was confirmed by NAPSAC Chairman Richmark Cave, who stated in a press release that “due to the unavailability of buses, the Transport Board is not on board with NAPSAC this year” and that the schools had been asked to seek alternative arrangements for students and athletes attending the event. “The schools would have to use private transport as well as maybe some Transport Board buses if they can get any. The Transport Board cannot supply NAPSAC and ply the routes too,” Cave said, adding that the Transport Board had provided transportation for the athletes over the past three to four years. The NAPSAC chairman also told Barbados TODAY that schools had already begun to put plans in place to use alternative transportation on Monday. (BT)

BRATH’S BEEF – Ryan Brathwaite is just as good clearing the air as he is hurdles. The former world champion believes not enough is being done to advance Bajan sports, having openly criticised the respective authorities for failing to put plans in place to consistently develop athletes. Brathwaite spoke candidly in a WEEKEND NATION interview after making his feelings felt this week via Facebook. “Sports of today right now in Barbados are dying and the Minister of Sports isn’t doing much because there really isn’t a plan in place,” said the 28-year-old sprint hurdler. RELAY FAIR TIME – Athletes from Barbados’ schools and clubs will be seeking to dethrone the formidable Cougars of Trinidad and Tobago when the 14th annual Ensure Barbados Relay Fair is staged at the National Stadium tomorrow. The island’s most exciting athletics meet starts at 10 a.m. and will give an early hint of the contenders on the track for the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (BSSAC) as they battle for the inaugural Leroy Harper Memorial Champion School Trophy. The Cougars, who dominated last year’s meet, winning the Girls’ Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 age groups, will be joined by compatriots, Bishop Anstey. Other overseas schools competing are Bermuda’s Cedar Bridge and Middle School and Thomas Saunders Secondary of St Vincent, who are returning with 19 athletes. (WN)

IT’S A GREEN HOUSE TAKE OVER - After ten years of supremacy, Blue House have surrendered their inter-house title to Green House, the new athletics champions of St George Secondary. Nothing can be taken away from Blue House who fought a good battle but were unable to finish the track and field war against an ever-determined Green House Thursday at the National Stadium. It was a keenly contested nail-biting showdown that went down to the final relay of the day and a mere three points separated the victorious Green House (995) from Blue House (992). Purple House’s 973 points got them into third place and Red House finished fourth with 820. Six records were broken and over the years, St George has produced a number of outstanding athletes with the likes of Jeal Williams who represented St George last year at the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championship (BSSAC) but will be wearing Christ Church Foundation School track colours this year. Then there is Mary Fraser, a three-time CARIFTA gold medallist who also won the coveted Austin Sealy Award in 2015 and shot putter Dequan Lovell currently based at Coffeyville Community College in the United States of America. (BT)

QUEENS AGAIN – The 2016 Massy United Insurance Senior Girls Basketball League title will remain at Government Hill for a second consecutive year. Springer Memorial held firm with a 45-43 result against a strong St Michael School team this afternoon at the latter’s Martindale’s Road, St Michael location. The contest went into extra time and the victorious side coached by Francis Thompson and Dean Squires were the ones screaming, chanting and dancing when referee Gillian Martindale sounded the final whistle. The final originally began Wednesday and had to be continued Thursday at 3:30 p.m. due to rain. It was a competitive battle with the regular time scores being 9-8, 18-19, 23-26 and 37-37 that forced the contest into four minutes extra time in an atmosphere of great rivalry between two of the better teams in this year’s competition. SCORPIONS HURT PRIDE –Two strange stoppages – relating to water and the floodlights – delayed the outcome last night but couldn’t stop Barbados Pride from crashing to their first defeat. They were stung by Jamaica Scorpions in their day/night WICB Regional Super50 Cup match at Kensington Oval. The Scorpions duly won easily by 74 runs when Ashley Nurse, after hitting two fours and two sixes in a rearguard 26 off 24 balls, was last out with Barbados Pride falling for 181 in 40.2 overs, replying to the Scorpions’ respectable total of 255 for eight in their 50 overs. Occasional off-spinner John Campbell was the Scorpions’ bowling hero, taking four for 43 in his ten overs and was named Man Of The Match. (WN)

GUYANA JAGUARS DEFEAT ICC AMERICAS – Guyana Jaguars wrapped up a disappointing preliminary round campaign in the Regional Super50 by brushing aside ICC Americas by eight wickets, in their final Group B outing Thursday. Virtually ruled out of advancing to the final four, Jaguars used the opportunity to notch their fourth win of the tournament by easily chasing down 171 at the 3Ws Oval. Opener Shimron Hetmyer, returning to the lineup after missing the last two games, missed out on a maiden hundred with 94 while fellow left-hander Assad Fudadin hit 54 – his second half-century of the competition. The pair put on 142 for the first wicket to negate any chance of an upset, as ICC Americas slumped to their sixth defeat in seven outings. Hetmyer, the successful former West Indies Under-19s captain, hammered ten fours and four sixes in an aggressive 76-ball knock while Fudadin faced 66 deliveries and counted four fours and two sixes. Jaguars galloped to their 50 off just 48 balls and reached 100 in the 19th over, with Hetmyer undertaking the bulk of the scoring. In fact, he raised his half-century off 49 deliveries and then required another 27 deliveries to motor into the 90s before falling short of his landmark. He perished in the 26th over with the score on 158, 19 deliveries after Fudadin had departed. Earlier, ICC Americas were bowled out of 170 off 48.1 overs, after choosing to bat first. They were undermined by left-arm seamer Raymon Reifer (3-15) and leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo (3-28) both of whom finished with three wickets apiece. Nikhil Dutta top-scored with 38, Saad bin Zafar weighed in with 36 while Nitish Kumar got 31. Openers Akeem Dodson (2) and Kamau Leverock (5) both fell cheaply to leave ICC Americas struggling on 12 for two in the fifth over before Kumar and Alex Amsterdam, who made 25, put on 55 for the third wicket. Once they were separated, another slump ensued where ICC Americas lost four wickets for nine runs in the space of 24 balls and this time, Dutta and bin Zafar combined in a 67-run partnership, to rescue the innings. Dutta struck two fours off 77 balls while bin Zafar cracked a four and a six off 63 balls but the partnership though productive was a slow one and ICC Americas were only 136 for six in the 40th over. When left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul removed Dutta to a catch at the wicket in the 43rd over, the innings declined again as the last four wickets fell for 27 runs.  (BT)

CORNWALL’S STAR CONTINUES TO RISE – All-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall says the hard work on his batting is now paying dividends, after he hit a classy half-century to steer Leeward Islands Hurricanes to a pulsating four-wicket win over Windward Islands Volcanoes last night. With the hosts tottering on 208 for six in the 39th over after losing five wickets for 44 runs, the 24-year-old Cornwall stepped up to stroke an unbeaten 74 off just 50 balls and see his side over the line with eight balls left in the innings. The half-century was Cornwall’s second of the tournament following his unbeaten 70, also against Volcanoes, in Hurricanes’ third outing of the Regional Super50. On Wednesday, he put on 91 in an unbroken seventh wicket stand with Trinidadian all-rounder Akeal Hosein, whose unbeaten 26 off 24 balls also proved critical. The victory was the sixth in seven games for Hurricanes and it allowed them to inch even closer to confirming their status as Group A winners, with their final game on Sunday against reigning champions Trinidad and Tobago Red Force. Cornwall is expected to be a key player for Hurricanes in their title bid. Not only is he an aggressive lower batsman but his stingy off-spin has also been a feature of his side’s attack. And the West Indies A star is hoping he can successfully combine both aspects of his game to good effect for Hurricanes. Last night Volcanoes made 293 with Devon Smith making 101 off 103 balls and Sunil Ambris scoring 53 off 36 deliveries. Andre Fletcher chipped in with 41. In the Hurricanes turn at the wicket captain Powell continued his great form with 80. Powell now has 509 runs in the tournament at an average of 84 and has struck three centuries.  (BT)

HINDS RETURNED TO WIPA’S HELM - President of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), Wavell Hinds, will continue to lead the organisation after an Annual General Meeting in Antigua Tuesday, returned his entire administration for a third term. The AGM, held at the Halcyon Cove by Rez Resorts in Antigua, included, according to reports, healthy debates on a number of issues. However, none of those have dimmed the organisation’s trust in its leadership. The result means the Hinds, who leads a slate of Nixon McLean as his vice president, Wayne Lewis as honorary secretary, Ridley Jacobs as honorary treasurer and Liam Sebastien as honorary assistant secretary, will now take on another two years at the helm of the organisation. Hinds, said he would continue to lead the WIPA in a direction that will foster development opportunities and provide welfare and other benefits for its members. The WIPA has been mired in controversy over the last few years, with Hinds being accused of siding with the board in creating unfair deals for West Indies players, contrary to the spirit of agreements with those players. The biggest blow up of those differences occurred with the West Indies players walking out on a tour of India. The WIPA has responded by pointing out that the benefits that the organisation has tried to provide, are for all its members and not just players who represent the West Indies. (BT)

YOUTH GROUP FEEDS KIDS - The burden of finding a healthy breakfast for children living in and around The Pine, St Michael area has been lifted thanks to the Barbados Youth Action Programme (BYAP). For the last four weeks, BYAP has been serving free breakfast to approximately 80 children, from Monday to Friday at Peggy’s Place, Factory Road, The Pine. The menu includes lentil fries, oats, pumpkin fritters, hot chocolate, homemade pancakes, vegetarian franks, tuna and cheese sandwiches, fruit juice and fresh fruit. President of BYAP Lumumba Batson said the Nourish Today for a Healthier Tomorrow breakfast programme came about because BYAP saw the importance of nutritious meals, which can be costly. (WN)

FOUR RECEIVE HONORS – Three outstanding Barbadians were yesterday presented belatedly with their Insignia of the National Honours and Awards and the Barbados Jubilee Honour 2016, while one received the Governor General’s Award. During a brief ceremony at Government House, Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave presented Rosemary Betty Hope-Gittens with the Silver Crown of Merit, awarded her in 2014, for her contribution to the promotion of Barbados in Canada. Former principal of the Barbados Workers’ Union Labour College, Ulric Sealy, who was recognized in 2016 for his contribution to the trade union movement, was also presented with a Silver Crown of Merit. Retired chartered accountant Kenneth Hewitt received the Barbados Jubilee Honour he was awarded in 2016, in recognition of his contribution to business in Barbados. In addition, Sir Elliott presented Commander Errington Shurland, who recently retired after a 33-year career with the Barbados Defence Force (BDF), with a Silver Medal of Honour. “This award is given at the Governor General’s discretion, in recognition of Commander Shurland’s long, meritorious and distinguished service to the BDF and Barbados,” the Governor General stated. RIHANNA OVERTAKES ELVIS’S RECORD - With the recent certifications of her hits Needed Me, Love On The Brain, Work, Sex With Me and Kiss It Better from her most recent studio album ANTI, Rihanna is now officially the best-selling solo recording artist of all time. With updated global sales of 213.2 million certified albums and singles, eight-time Grammy winner Rihanna surpassed rock and roll legend Elvis Presley who sold 211.5 million units. The achievement is even more significant given that Rihanna has released only 12 albums (including eight studio albums, two remix projects and two compilations) and 65 singles, compared to Elvis’ colossal catalogue of 193 albums and 111 singles. Rihanna is now without a doubt, history’s most successful solo recording artiste. With several high profile projects in the pipelines, she will certainly steam ahead to further separate herself from the competition in months and years to come. (BT)
