Baduizm (1997)

Although the live bass of single "On & On," along with her earthy head-wrap aesthetic established the Soul sub-culture dubbed Neo-Soul, Baduizm is really an album that sums up 90s R&B on a whole. There's songs that dabble in the acid-house grooves of The Brand New Heavies with "Certainly (Flipped It)," there's Uptown Records-era Hip Hop Soul with "No Love," and there's the tortured temptation of forbidden love in "Next Lifetime," a theme central in all great Soul songs.  A top five R&B debut album.

Mama’s Gun (2000)

Badu is full of ideas, with Electric Lady studios and the Soulquarians at her disposal on the stellar follow-up. There’s Talking Book-era Stevie on “2000 A.D.,” a Parliament/Funkadelic freak-out on opener “Penitentiary Philosophy,” and everything she learned in Soul music along with the kitchen sink on “Green Eyes.”  There’s no avenue ventured on this multi-textured album that doesn’t bear fruit.  A landmark R&B album of the decade.

Worldwide Underground (2003)

* * * *

Erykah moves from her Soulquarians to a new production unit including beatsmith Rashad Smith and multi-instrumentalist James Poyser, and they concoct an unwieldy synth-funk sprawl over deep, head-nodding beats. “Puff (Back in the Day)” is hazy but substantial, and Erykah impresses again with the stratospheric Chaka Khan funk of “I Want You.” The album sounds hobbled together though, with sounds from the breezy Donald Byrd cover “Think Twice” to the violent thump of “Danger.”  Even here, at her most directionless, her ideas and grooves shine. Immense mixtape fodder.

New Amerykah Part One: The 4th World War (2008)

The album that coined the word ‘woke’ on the mesmerising Sa-Ra produced spell of “Master Teacher,” and for good reason, with its status quo bucking and boundary-pushing Soul and invective.  “The Healer” is a brooding, dense seance, on “Me” she is as warm and welcoming as the bed of horns, and she samples 1976 media satire Network at the end of the creeping growl of “Twinkle.” Erykah has never been this dangerous, honest or daring, before or since.

New Amerykah Part Two: The Return of the Ankh (2010)

* * * *

Infused and stewed in a cauldron of memory, fear and funk, the songs on this set illuminate the artist by shading in her Houston, Texas past. “Gone Baby, Don’t be Long” is perfect driving music, grooving on heavy bass and a funk of yesteryear, while “Ummm Hmmm” is mild mannered enough until the revelatory second half. And on “Fall in Love(Your Funeral),” she sagely warns in order to love her you have “to change jobs, and change gods.”  Ultimately though, on this album she holds back her punches and imaginaton, feeling more like a retreat into the ankh.

“Keep in mind that I’m an artist, and I’m sensitive about my shit,” Erykah Badu advises before she begins the bluesy “Tyrone,” now considered a modern Soul classic. And the sensitivity is all over this live set, with tender expanded thoughts on “Othaside of the Game,” and the grand regret displayed on “Next Lifetime.” A rhythm section of drummer Charles Bell Jr. and bassist Hubert Eaves IV keep a tight groove, while a powerful and dreamy set of background vocalists including Karen Bernod flower imaginative notes over and around us. The earth goddess myth of Erykah Badu is concretised on this set.

Experience: Jill Scott 826+ (2001)

Jill Scott is in great spirits and at the top of her powers on the live set recorded in Washington DC. She jokes about fatback on one aside, breaks down exactly where on the song she threatens to whup ass on the end of “Gettin in the Way,” and she details “The Way” with adroit runs and scatting along with saxophonist Mike Phillips.  Her vocal performance here is unmatched in her peer group, capable of intimacy at one point and queenly pomp at the other, and everything in between, like in the epic “He Loves Me Parts I,II & III,” still the best song she has released to date.  An extra disc has hidden treasures like the jumping “Gimmie,” and the beautiful, sisterly concern of “The Thickness.” It is the last great live album in Soul music.
