Do you have any favorite episodes of Osomatsu (san or kun)? If you do, what about them makes them stand out?
I do! (Unsurprisingly, theyā€™re mostly Iyami-centric episodes, heh). I think my all-time fav Ososan episode is S2E18, Iyami Alone in The Wind, mostly because it was one of my favorite manga stories already and it utilizes a lesser-known part of Iyamiā€™s character: the length he goes to help and protect someone who, for the first time in his life, didnā€™t see him as a good-for-nothing pest in a perfect manner. Itā€™s also a big tearjerker and I cried like a baby both when I first read the story and when I saw it for the first time. Other very good Iyami episodes are S2E6 and S2E9, who nail his wacky side on the head.
When it comes to episodes that donā€™t focus on Iyami, my favorites are the now banned S1E1, that did an incredible job of setting up the tone of the series, S2E11, a VERY good Chibita episode that shows the more frightening side of his personality -san doesnā€™t explore as much as -kun did and S2E25, that was a pretty perfect ending for season 2.
Now, when it comes to -kun, there are two adaptations of the manga, one from the 60s and one from the 80s. I have to admit: 60s -kun, while enjoyable for what it is: a show from the early 60s, full of Scooby-doo worthy animation goofs and very faithful to the manga, has lots of issues with pacing and has never been subtitled in any capacity, which means I watched them in raw Japanese and sometimes couldnā€™t understand what was going on just from context cues. For those reasons, it didnā€™t stay fresh on my mind as much as 80s -kun and -san did, and as a result Iā€™ve never really memorized which episode is which.
Thatā€™s not to mean itā€™s not pretty funny at times! The episodes that made me laugh the most from the top of my head were the one Iyami visits the Matsunos and is a terrible house guest, the one Matsuzō loses his paycheck, the one Iyami is a tailor and its version of the ESP Kitty episode.
80s -kun, save for a couple of tropes typical from 80s animes that didnā€™t age well AT ALL that I donā€™t want to get too into or else this post will be more lengthy than it already is, is mostly made of timeless wacky comedy (which is really reminiscent of some western 90s ā€œgross outļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ cartoons like Rockoā€™s Modern Life and Edd, Ed and Eddy) so it holds up pretty well even now! And it focus more on Iyami and Chibita rather than the other characters, so if you like them youā€™re in for a treat in most episodes.
My favorite episodes are ep. 7, a more emotional one where Chibita finds and tries to care for an abandoned baby, and for wacky fun episodes, ep. 24, a characters-get-tiny-and-go-inside-the-body-of-another-character plot that wouldnā€™t look out of place in a western cartoon, ep. 10, a fun, more dark humored episode where Iyami teams up with a Grim Reaper-esque figure and ep. 44, a fun AU where Iyami is actually from France and is a weeaboo instead of a Francophile.
This... ended up way longer than I thought it would be, heh. I hope I answered your question well!
