Chapter 5: Caring Is a Hazard to Your Health (#24)

After an extended nap and some light reading, I head out to supper.

Seems quiet in here.

Only natural at this point. Just 8 people—

Stop. It...

It’s just quiet because Aidan isn’t here at the moment. Yeah.

Still, silence beats fighting. I hop in the kitchen to make some vaguely lumpy onigiri and eat it in there. Not feeling sociable yet. I’ll probably head upstairs for the rest of the evening. Get a few games in. Or...

“I could go further upstairs than that...”

I still feel like I haven’t been that thorough looking through the new floor, and now...

Where did that key come from, anyway? To show up in the gym... It was right after we got our motive, so any of us could have dropped it then. Even Monochap.

There’s no telling. I’ll just investigate and hope this doesn’t turn out to be some kind of trap. If someone wanted this to be found, then... probably Kanagi? She started Horse. Not easy to believe she’d mastermind a trap like that, though, so I won’t point any fingers yet. It’s probably just what it looked like, anyway. Slipped out of a pocket somewhere.

Impatiently, I finish up my supper and head out. I cross Tsunyasha in the hall, but she doesn’t make any death threats, so not worth my attention. Maybe I ought to be hunting Mahavir down instead, but... I’ll just burn myself out if I’m not careful.

I check the Nurse’s Office anyway, but it’s empty.

Upstairs, then.

This many flights is a bit of a haul, but I’m not that tired. That, and I should probably double-check the shutters they’ve been using in here.

...Yup. There’s still a flight closed off. At least it keeps moving up.

“All right. Let’s see if I can get into anything.”

I dig around the Computer Room first, just in case I may somehow get access to a computer, but it’s not looking promising. If there are any secret compartments in here, they don’t have visible keyholes. Kind of a long shot, anyway.

I go ahead and try the mysterious office at the far end of the east wing, but the key doesn’t even start to fit. Figures.

Finally I move to the Secretary’s Office. The door is unlocked, but...

“Probably my number-one suspect.”

I jiggle the key into the file cabinet’s key slot. It actually goes in, which is a good start, but it sure doesn’t want to turn. Maybe I’m wrong.

“Doubt I’m going to snap this thing in half, though.”

I give it another two rounds of heave-ho before it finally turns. I rub my fingers to try to get the key impression off of them before reaching for the topmost handle.

“Is there some way to make sure I’m not about to set off a bomb?”

Not that I know of, so I’ll just have to hope. Can’t see any wires running into the cabinet, so that’s a good sign.

The drawer offers some resistance, too, making a series of clangs as I pull and push on the handle. But then something manages to rattle loose, and the drawer comes on out. Not all the way, thankfully, since that probably would have knocked me over. But far enough to see the contents. Five files hang between the sides of the drawer, so widely spaced it still feels eerily empty. All but the first are labeled at the tab.

“Aidan, Aki, Arthur...”

These are files on us? In... first-name alphabetical order for some reason, but the secretary’s personal preferences probably aren’t worth worrying about. I reach for the unlabeled file. The thing is full up, but it looks like most of the papers are copies of blank forms. Mostly demographic-looking. Not terribly informative. But at the front...

“ ‘ Recruitment Guidelines’.”

If the files in this cabinet are on students, I doubt it’s guidelines for recruiting staff. As far as the student side goes, I honestly know precious little aside from the fact that they do recruit. I think there was something flowery about my qualifications on my acceptance letter, but I can’t remember the details now. So I can’t exactly verify this, but it looks authentic enough.

“ ‘Must be a legal resident of Japan or be or become fluent in Japanese within one year’...”

A lot of the qualifications are kind of arbitrary with a nice touch of legalese, so that’s not helping me any. The only thing that really strikes me is how vague the most significant qualifications are.

“ ‘Has performed a feat or collection of feats that could not be expected of any other student’.”

“...Have I done that?”

I guess tournaments must count. Otherwise, I’m not sure how I qualify. But it makes sense. It was probably similar for Kazusuke and Kanagi, and maybe some of the artistic talents. Seems boring, almost, but otherwise this school would just be a collection of obscure world record-holders, wouldn’t it?

At any rate, this isn’t helping my search for the young master. Or whatever I’m searching for right now. Honestly I feel like I just showed up over here without an actual goal in mind besides “try key.” But whatever. No one else should be coming in here, so I can take all the time I need. Might be nighttime soon, but that just means less chance of anyone being out to see me by the time I finish.

Anyone who follows the rules, at least. But no one would be looking for a victim so soon, right...? I won’t worry about it. Maybe bring some kind of blunt implement with me on the way back, but. Not worth any more thought than that.

I put the recruitment guidelines away semi-neatly and browse the rest of the cabinet. There are a few files in each drawer. At least, each drawer I can get too. Bottom one’s thoroughly jammed. I can deal with that later if I feel the need to. For now...

“...My file.”

This is the closest I could possibly get to verifying this cabinet’s info. I pull out the file with my name and stare at it.

“Why do I feel nervous about opening it?”

It’s not like it's a report card or anything. Probably? Would they have those mixed in here, too?

But there’s no reason for me to be nervous about that, anyway?? Just shut up and read it.

I start flipping through. Aside from a few oblique mentions, I don’t see any grades in here. Just the demographic-ish paperwork. That, and a few grainy copies of championship certificates. Guess I got accepted here for consistency, because no single one of these is that huge a deal. Unusual for someone my age, maybe, but...

“Anyway, seems legitimate enough.”

Time to check out the rest. I put my file back and start at the top. Aidan’s first, then. I remove his file and gaze at it in my hands for a while. Seems kind of personal, now that I think about it. But most of this would be public information, anyway, right? That, or something that’s no big deal, like hometown.

Well, I won’t find anything either way if I don’t even look. Open sesame.

First few pages are the same forms, filled out differently. He is indeed from America, specifically Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

“Never heard of either of those, but sure, why not.”

Blah, blah, height, weight, medical conditions... Nothing earth-shattering. And then...

“What the heck? Everything on this page is redacted.” Aside from a few prepositions that don’t tell me anything, all the text has been reduced to a stuttering black line.

I try looking at the other side, then holding it up to the light, but it gets me nowhere. Nothing I can do with this besides think about it, and I can save that for later. There’s a newspaper clipping in here that looks a lot less difficult to read, so I’ll try that.

“ ‘Bioterrorist Attack Kills Three, Hospitalizes Eleven Others’.”

It goes on to summarize a recent anthrax-like attack on an air control tower that pretty much took out everyone there, lethally or otherwise, within a few minutes. One Abe Sorakubo managed to hang on long enough to redirect traffic despite technical difficulties and guide one plane safely to the ground when it was unable to change course. Abe remains in critical condition...

“...’but has received a better prognosis than the 12-year-old child caught up in the attack alongside him’.”

The child had already stopped breathing by the time EMS found them on the floor of the control tower wearing one of the controller headsets. Abe stated that the child was an aspiring air traffic controller, and he wanted them to be able to wear it before they died, even if they were already unconscious at the time.

“...........”

Yeah, three guesses who the 12-year-old child was. Is it really okay for me to be reading this? I mean, if it was in the news, a lot of people already have, right? And whoever was putting together the recruitment files read it, too. They even highlighted the bit just before Abe’s statement.

I quietly refile the papers and put the folder back. Next is Aki...

“...”

I don’t know if I can do this right now. Maybe I... I’ll come back to her later.

Arthur, then.

Still hurts a little to thumb through his profile, but it’s a muted enough pain by now. At least we weren’t really friends. Classmates, for sure, but...

“...........”

Anyway.

Born on some kind of British military base in Germany, looks like. And lots of travel from there. Even his list of actual residences goes on for pages. Nothing in here seems suspect, though.

Instead of third-party material, his additional insert is more of a handwritten memo. Notes on his total distance travelled, the success of his blog, and an addendum that Super High School Level Hitchhiker may not be a very standard sort of talent but would nonetheless fit him and the standards of the school.

I flip through everything again just to be sure, but still, nothing of interest. “He’s been a lot of places” is about the whole gist of it.

“Ichiriki, then.”

I sort through his main file, which tells me a whole lot of nothing. Heir of the Tokino Hardware empire. No major moves.

No psychological profiles or anything, either. That would be too helpful, huh?

Instead of a single news article, his has several, though none of them actually have photos of his art. A few of them explain that he considers photography an abomination against everything chalk art represents. None of them specify what it’s supposed to represent, but I guess that’s to be expected.

At any rate, it really does look like he’s here as the Super High School Level Chalk Artist. As much as I’d like to say he has some fake talent to hide his involvement in this whole thing as some kind of warped observational psychologist, between this and his actual art skills, I really have no basis for saying anything like that.

Darn. He’d make an awfully convincing bad guy.

Maybe not so much at the moment, but. Overall. I can’t discount him entirely just because his talent is genuine, though, so there’s still that.

And that’s all the files for the top drawer.

“...........”

I’m weirdly tired already. Maybe I should take a break before I start overlooking any real clues. This cabinet won’t be going anywhere, right? And it probably is getting late by now.

“...”

I lock up the cabinet with much less struggle than it took to unlock it. I tug at each drawer afterwards, but they’re all sealed up pretty well.

All right, then. I can jump back in tomorrow morning.

Assuming nobody’s dead by then.

Airworthy P-51 Mustangs, 2019, Part 3

Part 1 Part 2

While they have been heavily modified at times, and the airframe’s original serial numbers are lost to time, Cavalier Mustangs are still Mustangs to me. They have probably seen more combat time than most surviving P-51Ds as well.

P-51D, 44-73877, Shaun Patrick

Green-and-gray RAF paint scheme, RAF roundels and fin flash, red propeller spinner, sharkmouth nose art, GA-S fuselage code. The aircraft served with the RCAF until 1958 when it entered civilian hands and flew on the air racing circuit. It underwent a full restoration in the early 1980s and flew under the livery of Old Crow until 2014, with a short stint as Cisco for filming Memphis Belle and as Detroit Miss 1999-2001.

P-51D, Contrary Mary, 44-84847, Anglia Aircraft Restorations Ltd

Overall silver finish, black-and-white checkered nose and rudder, yellow band on canopy rim, Contrary Mary nose art on port side, WZ-I fuselage code. The aircraft first appeared in North Dakota in 1999 after an uncertain civilian history and was sold to Duxford’s Fighter Collection in 2005 for restoration in Chino. Restoration was complete by 2007 and it operated out of Duxford until a crash in 2017. It recently flew again after a restoration at Fighter Rebuilders in the US.

Cavalier Mustang II, Bum Steer, 67-14866, Tom Friedkin

Overall silver finish, black-and-white checkered nose and wingtips, black rudder, DF-X fuselage code, taller vertical stabilizer. The aircraft was assembled by Cavalier in 1967 and served with the Bolivian Air Force from 1968 until 1977. It returned to North America and was bought by the current owner in 1991; in 2000 it crashed and was restored by Fighter Rebuilders to airworthiness once more.

Cavalier Mustang II, Mormon Mustang, 67-22579, John Bagley

Overall silver finish, red-and-yellow checkered nose, yellow rudder, C5-T fuselage code. The aircraft was rebuilt as an F-51D for Bolivia, where it served from 1967 until 1977. The current owner purchased the aircraft in 2006 and almost immediately afterwards crash-landed on a highway, requiring an almost complete rebuilt; it returned to airworthiness in 2009.

Cavalier Mustang II, Six Shooter, 67-22580, Chuck Hall

Overall silver finish, blue upper surfaces and rudder, yellow propeller spinner, D-Day invasion stripes under wings and fuselage, RF-K fuselage code, Six Shooter nose art on port side. The aircraft served with the Bolivian Air Force from 1968 until 1977 when it was recovered and returned to Canada for restoration. It entered the US in 1986 and was acquired by the current owner in 1996.

Cavalier Mustang II, Lou IV, 67-22581, William Glover

Overall olive-drab finish, yellow nose, D-Day invasion stripes on wings and under fuselage, E2-C fuselage code, Race 16 markings painted over national insignia on the fuselage.

P-51A, 43-6006, John Dowd

Polished aluminum finish, olive-drab upper nose, red-and-white stripped rudder, Race 6 marking on vertical tail, otherwise unmarked. The aircraft served with the Air Corps until 1944 when it crashed in Arkansas, and only returned to airworthiness in 1985 after an eight year restoration. It flew at Reno from 2005-2012 when it was sold to the current owner and restored to P-51A configuration.

P-51A, 43-6251, Miss Virginia, Planes of Fame Air Museum

Overall olive-drab finish, yellow propeller spinner, white stripes on rear fuselage, white band across vertical tail. The aircraft was acquired by Ed Maloney in 1953 and stayed with his museum (and the Planes of Fame branch in California) until 2001 when it moved to the Arizona branch. It underwent restoration to airworthiness in 1981 and most recently in 2006.

P-51B, Impatient Virgin?, 42-106638, John Sessions

Overall silver finish, yellow propeller spinner, large D-Day invasion stripes on rear fuselage and under wings, Malcolm hood, Impatient Virgin nose art on port side, E9-R fuselage code. The aircraft served with the 361st Fighter Group until a crash in 1945, at which point the wreckage was abandoned until recovery in 2003. Restoration finished by 2008.

P-51B, Old Crow, 43-12252, Jack Roush

Overall dark green finish, yellow-and-red propeller spinner, white bands around inner wings and horizontal stabilizers, Malcolm hood, B6-S fuselage code, Old Crow nose art on both sides. The aircraft served with the Air Corps until 1944 when it crashed in Lake Louise, FL, during a training flight. The wreckage was recovered in 2001 and restoration finished by 2008 in time for Oshkosh.

P-51B, Berlin Express, 43-24837, Comanche Fighters

Overall olive-drab finish, yellow-and-red propeller spinner, D-Day invasion stripes under fuselage and wings, B6-0 fuselage code, Berlin Express nose art on port side, dragon nose art on right side. The aircraft served with the 363rd Fighter Group until written off in a 10 June 1944 crash; restoration began in 2010 and was finished by 2014. It flew across the Atlantic for the Duxford Flying Legends airshow in 2017 and remained there until 2018 due to a broken canopy.

P-51C, Tuskegee Airmen, 42-103645, Commemorative Air Force Red Tails Squadron

Overall silver finish, red vertical and horizontal stabilizers, red propeller spinner, yellow bands around outer wings, A2-4 fuselage code, CAF art under cockpit. The aircraft was acquired by the CAF in 1965 from a trade school and languished until 1999 when restoration began in earnest. It first flew again in 2001 and suffered a fatal crash in 2004, and a gear-up landing in 2016.

P-51C, Ina the Macon Bell, 42-103831, Kermit Weeks

Overall silver finish, red vertical and horizontal stabilizers, yellow bands around outer wings, 22 fuselage code. The aircraft flew as a racer for many years postwar before being acquired by Kermit Weeks in 1985; restoration finished in 2000 after almost fifteen years.

P-51C, Lope’s Hope 3rd, 43-24907, Dakota Territory Air Museum

Overall silver finish, black horizontal and vertical stabilizers, large national insignia on rear fuselage, otherwise unmarked. Restoration began sometime in 2004, with a first flight in 2014. There is little information available on the plane at the current time.

P-51C, Boise Bee, 43-25057, Warhawk Air Museum

Overall olive-drab finish, red propeller spinner, white bands around inner wings, rudder, and horizontal stabilizers, QP-B fuselage code, Boise Bee nose art on port side, white 19 under port cockpit. Restoration originally began in 1985, slowly continuing until its first flight in 2010.

This was the residence of Frederick N. Finney at 34 Prospect Ave. (later 1252 N. Prospect). Finney was born in Boston in 1832. At age 25, he came to Wisconsin, studying law at Oshkosh. Later he turned to civil engineering. Upon completion of his schooling, he became actively involved in the construction of a division of the Union Pacific road, completing about 125 miles of the transcontinental line. After working on several other railroads, Finney returned to Wisconsin and became managing director of the Wisconsin Central Railroad. Later, he worked on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway, and the Missouri, Kansas & Oklahoma Railway. One of the foremost American civil engineers, Finney was also deeply interested in art and travel, and was the author of several books. He was a collector and recognized authority on works of art, precious jewels, china and furniture. In 1953, a library built at 4243 W. North Ave. was named after Finney, whose bequest on his death in 1916 enabled the library to build a collection of books in the fine arts field. The site is now occupied by the Exton Apartments. This statue of Frances Willard was given to the National Statuary Hall Collection by Illinois in 1905. Her statue was the first honoring a woman to be chosen for the collection.

Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard (September 28, 1839 – February 17, 1898) was an American educator, temperance reformer, and women's suffragist. Willard became the national president of Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in 1879, and remained president until her death in 1898. Her influence continued in the next decades, as the Eighteenth (Prohibition) and Nineteenth (Women Suffrage) Amendments to the United States Constitution were adopted. Willard developed the slogan "Do Everything" for the WCTU, encouraging members to engage in a broad array of social reforms through lobbying, petitioning, preaching, publishing, and education. During her lifetime, Willard succeeded in raising the age of consent in many states, as well as passing labor reforms including the eight-hour work day. Her vision also encompassed prison reform, scientific temperance instruction, Christian socialism, and the global expansion of women's rights.

Helen Farnsworth Mears (/mɪərs/; December 21, 1872 – February 17, 1916) was an American sculptor. She studied at the State Normal School in Oshkosh,[4] and art in New York City before heading to Paris in 1895 to continue working with Denys Puech (sometimes Puesch), Alexandre Charpentier, and Frederick MacMonnies.[6][7]

Mears was one of a group of women sculptors christened the "White Rabbits" who worked under Lorado Taft producing sculpture for the World Columbian Exposition.[12] Her most important works include a marble statue of Frances E. Willard (1905, Capitol, Washington) that is included in the National Statuary Hall Collection; portrait reliefs of Edward MacDowell (Metropolitan Museum, New York); and Augustus St. Gaudens; portrait busts of George Rogers Clark and William T.G. Morton, M. D. (Smithsonian Institution, Washington).

A quick guide to the survivors, and how to quickly identify them.

Sentimental Journey, 44-83514, CAF Arizona Wing

“Triangle U” fin flash, denoting the 457th Bomb Group, 1st Bomb Wing, 8th Air Force. This aircraft served as a mothership during Operation Greenhouse, a series of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests in 1951. She is based out of Mesa, Arizona.

Memphis Belle, 44-83546, Military Aircraft Restoration Corp.

Olive drab fuselage paint with yellow identification markings, lacks a fin flash for unit identification. The aircraft is actually a B-17G modified to resemble the real Belle for the 1990 movie, and carries the markings of the original aircraft. Note the flatter Sperry top turret (not visible in this picture), lack of a chin turret, and larger waist windows. She is based out of Anaheim, California.

Miss Angela, 44-85778, Palm Springs Air Museum

Unpainted main fuselage, bright red forward fin, yellow ring around the nose compartment, the markings of the 34th Bomb Group, 4th Bomb Wing, 8th Air Force. The aircraft was delivered to the 6th Air Force and served post-war in Brazil. She is based out of Palm Springs, California.

Fuddy Duddy, 44-83563, Lyon Air Museum

“Square K” fin flash, denoting the 447th Bomb Group, 4th Air Wing, 8th Air Force. Unpainted main fuselage, yellow fin and control surfaces, double green band on rear fuselage and fin. This aircraft served as a VIP transport in the Pacific at the end of WWII. She is based out of Santa Ana, California.

Nine-O-Nine, 44-83575, Collings Foundation

“Triangle A” fin flash, denoting the 91st Bomb Group, 1st Bomb Wing, 8th Air Force; olive drab fuselage, vertical red bar on fin, aircraft code OR-R, extensive mission markings for nose art. The aircraft was subjected to three nuclear explosions in 1952 before being sold for scrap, then restored. She is painted to resemble the original Nine-O-Nine and is based out of Stow, Massachusetts.

Yankee Lady, 44-85829, Yankee Air Museum

“Triangle L” fin flash, denoting the 381st Bomb Group, 1st Air Wing, 8th Air Force; unpainted main fuselage, red vertical band on the fin and red markings on the wingtips and horizontal stabilizers, aircraft code Y-GD. The aircraft was transferred to the Coast Guard in 1946 where it was stripped and turned into an air-sea rescue plane. She is based out of Belleville, Michigan.

Thunderbird, 44-85718, Lone Star Flight Museum

“Triangle C” fin flash, denoting the 303rd Bomb Group, 1st Air Wing, 8th Air Force; olive drab fuselage, large group markings on the fin and starboard upper wing surface, aircraft code U-BN. The aircraft is painted to represent the original Thunderbird which flew 112 missions without a crew injury. She is based out of Galveston, Texas.

Texas Raiders, 44-83872, CAF Gulf Coast Wing

“Triangle L” fin flash, denoting the 381st Bomb Group, 1st Air Wing, 8th Air Force; olive drab fuselage, red wingtips and horizontal stabilizers, group markings on the fin and starboard upper wing, aircraft code X-VP. The aircraft served in the Navy as a PB-1W AWACS aircraft before being retired in 1955. She is based out of Spring, Texas.

Madras Maiden, 44-8543, Erickson Aircraft Collection

“Triangle L” fin flash, denoting the 381st Bomb Group, 1st Bomb Wing, 8th Air Force; unpainted main fuselage, red wingtips and horizontal stabilizers, red band on the fin, black/red open band on the starboard upper wing, aircraft code F-JE. The aircraft was converted into a Pathfinder with the H2X radar set before being retired in 1959. She is based out of Madras, Oregon.

From 1979 until 2013 44-8543 wore the colors of Chuckie, “Square W” 486th Bomb Group, 4th Air Wing, 8th Air Force. In these pictures she is painted with a yellow fin, triple yellow bands around the rear fuselage, yellow wingtips and yellow ring around the nose. This is how the aircraft was displayed at my local air museum, and how it is most often pictured.

Aluminum Overcast, 44-85740, Experimental Aircraft Association

“Triangle W” fin flash, denoting the 398th Bomb Group, 1st Air Wing, 8th Air Force; silver main fuselage, red wingtips and horizontal stabilizers, red vertical band on fin, group markings on fin and starboard upper wing. The aircraft was delivered too late to see service in Europe and was sold as surplus, entering the civilian market. She is based out of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Sally B, 44-85784, B-17 Preservation Ltd.

The aircraft carries identical markings to Memphis Belle, acquired during the filming of the 1990 movie. Her #3 engine cowling (starboard inner) is painted with a yellow-black checkerboard pattery. She is based out of Duxford, England, and is the only airworthy B-17 in Europe.

Several other B-17s are listed as airworthy, including The Pink Lady (44-8846, last flown 2010), Boeing Bee (42-29782, flown 2006 with no plans for further flights), and Shady Lady (44-83785, recently acquired by the Collings Foundation with plans to return to flight by 2017). Several others are under restoration to airworthiness.
